Welcome To Realms Of Adventure - Updated 10th April 2009

Well met, traveller. Welcome to the Realms Of Adventure.

Realms Of Adventure (or RoA as we like to call it) is a community of play-by-post games all set in and around the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. We use the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition rules, or 3.0 for stuff that hasn’t been updated. Our version of the Forgotten Realms is set in the year 1375 DR (mostly in the summer, fall or winter), in the classic world of adventure and intrigue and heroics. This is long before the Spellplague and other catastrophes struck, and we likely shall not be going along with that event.

RoA is basically a number of play-by-post Forgotten Realms games combined into one. If you have only played D&D on tabletop with friends, imagine playing in a really big room with tables upon tables of other gaming groups. Each table has its own DM, its own set of players and PCs, and each is running through their own region of the Forgotten Realms, playing their own adventures. The advantage is that we can help each other out when times are tough, give advice, and rescue each other's games or players rather than let them die out.

Here, different DMs run their own adventures in their own lands of Faerun, entirely independently yet part of a larger world. News and rumours and shared events may appear from time to time. PCs may travel from region to region and explore the world and meet other PCs. Think of it as like an MMORPG, only much slower and without the computer graphics, or like the RPGA. It's a fun and enjoyable community that has lasted for several years and is still going strong.

If you wish to have your character move on, then you may apply to another DM for a transfer into their region. You may do this if your DM vanishes or retires, or if you just want a change of scenery. If a DM does leave, then we head DMs will endeavour to find a replacement to take-over, preferably continuing the current adventure. Unlike independent games elsewhere on RPoL, your character is not left in the lurch when a GM quits; they may continue their story and have a much longer life-span, and keep their levels and treasures.

To join as a player, simply request access to this forum, and discuss your character concept with a DM who has advertised an opening in their game. We have a list of open game spots in a thread called "Available Space for Players" in the OOC Forum. Then create your PC using our PC Creation Rules and the PC Sheet found here in the RoA: OOC Forum, and submit the completed PC sheet to the sheet checker DMs in a private message. Once they give it their seal of approval, you are ready to play.

If you would like to DM for us, then simply request access and discuss it with the head DMs. Please indicate your experience as a DM in general and in play-by-post gaming, and your experience with the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, as well as anything else you'd like us to know. Knowledge of FR is nice but not essential; we can share heaps of information on the setting and direct you to small-scale regions to try out. We'll answer any questions you have, and let you look around first to see what you think.

We have many games that need to be taken over as their last DMs have had to retire for various real-life reasons. We are also always interested in DMs coming in and starting their own regions in RoA, though it is preferred that you adopt an orphaned game where possible.

The head DMs are DM Annihilator, DM BadCatMan, and DM Windwalker.  They are here to help you, so don't be afraid to contact them if you need anything or have any problems.

While we are using the 3.5 rules, you do not need to go out and buy the new books or anything. You can simply use the 3.5 SRDs for the Player's Handbook (and other D&D OGL items) which is found in a link in "Links to 3.5 Information" on this site. We have resources for player use that lay out the basic rules of FR play. DMs and many players will help you with information/questions. A list of rules, PrCs, source materials, etc., which we allow for player use in RoA is here too.

So if you have any other questions, ask in the form of a PM or, once you're in as a player, in the "Ask the RoA Sage" thread here in RoA: OOC Forum.

And again, if you have a problem or need any help, please contact the Head DMs of Roa: Annihilator, BadCatMan, and Windwalker.  One, two, or even all three will get with you just as soon as possible.

Have fun!

Code of Conduct: PLEASE READ!

OOC Conduct
OOC conduct is defined as anything that happens between players.  All players are to treat each other with courtesy at all times. If a player has any kind of disagreement or problem with a fellow player for any reason, the situation is to immediately be brought to the attention of the DM running the game or to any DM outside of games. The DM will resolve the problem. If a player is not satisfied with the outcome they should send a private message to the head DM.  Once they make a decision, it's final. No arguments. It's got to stop somewhere. Under NO circumstances should players use the message boards to argue, slander, flame, accuse (of anything), etc.

IC Conduct
IC Conduct is defined as anything that happens between characters or a character's actions. In this type of game with many players it is necessary to lay down some guidelines on character interaction and behavior to keep the game consistent and enjoyable for all.

No character can kill another character, for any reason.

Combat between characters is discouraged, as it tends to slow the game down and can quickly become disruptive. We have an Arena where PvP may occur.

It's ok for a PC to be disagreeable, to argue with another PC, not like a certain PC, to have a particularly obnoxious habit, etc. But please try to keep this to a minimum as we strive for group harmony.

What happens when you break these rules:
PCs or players that continuously disrupt play (either IC or OOC) will be removed from the game. DMs will give ONE warning by private message. If a PC/Player gets removed from a region, that player will have one more chance to alter his/her playing style. After a talk with a DM about the situation, the PC will have a private note set on his/her character sheet for one month. During this time if the PC/player is abusive or disruptive AGAIN they will be permanently removed from ROA. If said PC/player plays nice during that time, at the end of the time the private note will be removed. To rejoin a region a PC/player was removed from that player must obtain permission from that region's DM. The DM has the full and complete right to deny the PC/player access to his/her current game. If this is the case the PC/player must either wait for the next game in that region or move on to another region that is accepting players.

Please understand that we are not trying to be hardasses here; we only want this game to be enjoyable for everyone and to accomplish that there must be rules and consequences for breaking said rules.

RPoL Site Policies
Everyone of course must adhere to the RPoL Site Policies at all times.

Posting Policy: PLEASE READ!

Player Activity:
Once granted access, a player should read the various notices, message a DM with a character concept, create their character and egt the completed character sheet approved by the sheet checker DMs, and send it to their DM.

The DMs try to respond very quickly to character sheets and questions, and characters get approved quickly.

Every couple of months the head DMs will send out private messages to players who have no character sheet, haven't been in contact with a DM in some time, or made any activity in their games or the OOC forum. Those players who do not respond in 7 days are purged. If you need to be away from ROA for a long time simply send the head DMs a private message so you will not be purged.

Character Activity:
We strive for a regular and enjoyable pace in gameplay, and so have adopted a policy for a standard minimum-posting rate of at least 3 times per week. Any slower then this will cause the game to drag, causing players to lose interest. Players and DMs should both try to abide by this.

Please note that some DMs list different posting rates in their region's rules such as 1 per day weekends excluded.  That is the DM's preferred posting rate.

In order to keep the games moving any character that has been inactive for a long time will be removed from the game. It will be up to the region's DM if a character comes back into an adventure; the DM may have the character wait for the next adventure. In this case the player always has the option to move the character to another region that is accepting characters.

This policy is not set in stone.  We understand that Real Life happens and that things come up that will take you away from the game without rhyme or reason.  Just send a private message to the DM of your game, give an estimate of how long you will be gone or how long your posting frequency will be slow if you can. The DM will be happy to NPC your character while you are gone.  As long as we know what is going on, your character is safe.

Still, there are always those players who either barely stay within the posting guidelines or frequently miss them and even when they do manage to post it's terse and does nothing to further the game.  Sometimes a player just doesn't have enough time to play but really wants to, and so the quality and quantity of their posts is adversely effected. Other times some players just slowly lose interest or never had much interest to begin with. It happens. Unfortunately, a character that pops in and out of the game or barely contributes is very disrupting for the other players. A player who habitually does this will be asked to either shelve the character until they can participate more or retire the character all together.

Step-by-Step Player's Guide to Realms of Adventure

Welcome to the Player's Guild for Realms of Adventure!

The goal of this guide is to help players of all skill levels play in Realms of Adventure ("RoA") with as much ease as possible.

The best way to navigate through RoA is in steps.

Step 1: Request Access to RoA: OOC Forum.

If you have not yet requested to join in RoA: OOC as a player, do so now.  A DM will grant you access, and you can then read forums which will give you a glimpse of RoA and information on how to create a player character for our campaign, which regions of Faerun are currently accepting new characters, and more.

Once you're in as a player, move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Create a Player Character.

PC Creation is not the easiest or most fun part of RoA, to be sure.  But we have done all we can to make things easy for players.

Read our "PC Creation Rules" forum here in RoA: OOC first.  That has ALL the information in it you need to create your RoA character.

There is a link to the OGC (Open Game Content) Player's Handbook and other rules for 3.5 Dungeons and Dragons in RoA: OOC.  That will help players who are without the rulebooks.

We have our own RoA Sage who has a forum devoted to providing players and DMs alike with answers to rules and RoA questions.

DMs and other players will also be happy to offer advice in creating your RoA PC.

Once you have a PC ready, go to Step 3.

Step 3: Get your PC Approved.

Once you have a PC sheet completed with all areas filled in, you need to get your sheet approved by a qualified DM. This is best done by cutting and pasting the completed PC sheet into a private message to your prospective DM, DM Kilric, DM Puma and DM Windwalker, and DM Shadow titling the message "PC For Approval".  In time, they will go over the sheet, check it for errors, discuss these with you, and finally okay it.

Once they have okayed the PC sheet, you are ready for Step 4.

Step 4: Get into a Region.

Check the "Available Space for PCs" forum here in RoA: OCC to see which regions and DMs are accepting new PCs. PM a DM who is accepting PCs and let them know you want to play in their region, and if you have an approved PC, give them that PC in your message.

Ideally, you should discuss the character you want to play with the DM prior to filling out the sheet, as there may be additional rules to follow or character roles already filled.

Once in a game, move on to Step 5.

Step 5: Play!

This is the fun part of things, of course; playing D&D.  But "playing" is more than posting (and we hope you can post at least 4 times a week).  There are some things you have to do in order to be an active player here in RoA.

1.) Pick a portrait for your PC. (information on how to do this is in the RPoL Help area)
2.) Write a description for your PC, listing things the other players and NPCs would notice when they encounter your PC.  Appearance, mannerisms, tone of voice, and other traits would be appropriate. (information on how to do this is in the RPoL Help area)
3.) Set up your Bio Lines (when in "Adventures").  Bio Line 1 should show your PC's initiative modifer, followed by his/her AC -- normal/flat footed/touch attack.  Line 2 should show your hit points -- current/normal maximum, followed by your save modifiers -- Fort/Ref/Will.
4.) Make sure your DM has your PC Sheet in Adventures.  Keep a record/copy of your PC's sheet handy.  Maintain your PC sheet by updating on a fairly regular basis -- maybe every 2 weeks or so.

You should now be on your way to having fun playing in Realms of Adventure!

If you have any questions, ask the RoA Sage here in RoA: OOC Forum.

Thanks for checking out and, I hope, eventually playing in RoA!

Other Rules

XPs:

DMs will be awarding XPs for roleplaying, problem-solving, and, or course, typical adventure aspects such as slaying foes, plot points, and so on. Your DM should be awarding XPs once every 2 weeks or so.

Multiple PCs / New PCs above 3rd level

We are allowing players to run up to 2 PCs in this mega-campaign.  The only rules here (besides basic character creation rules) are that your PCs do not know each other, are not connected in any way, can not swap items, etc., and are never to be in the same campaign region together.

While we start this campaing at 3rd level (3,000 XPs), groups soon rise to higher levels.  If you run, say, a 7th level PC in a campaign and he dies, you are allowed to come into play with a new PC, but the new one is at the lowest level of PCs present in the region the new PC comes in to play in.

Some DMs will let you resume play right away in the region where your PC died (if there is room), while others will ask that you create a new PC and look for a new home for that PC.

Whatever the case is, the new PC comes into play at the lowest level of other PCs in that region.

Forgotten Realms Specifics

If you do not own the Forgotten Realms Campaign Sourcebook, check with a DM as you finalize your PC.

Each PC in the Forgotten Realms gets a FREE language, a FREE item (usually a masterwork or minor magic item), and can get special regional feats not found in the Player's Handbook. Some Knowledge skills also pertain only to certain regions.

Also, you should pick a Realms-specific deity as opposed to most of them in the Player's Handbook. A list of dieties can be found in the Dieties thread.

Information on these and other PC creation rules can be found in the PC Creation Rules thread here in RoA: OOC.

Character Background/History notes:  The current RoA year is 1375.  In most regions it is Fall of that year.

Earn XPs!  (Updated March 3, 2008)

Earn XPs for your characters beyond those earned in adventures or taverns!

There's always stuff  we can all do to make Realms of Adventure the best campaign is can be, and you can help!  And when you help RoA, you help your PC advance with extra experiences points!

Here's how the program works:

Pick a task and run with it (after checking with DMs Annihilator, BadCatMan and Windwalker to see if the job is not currently being done or that it has not already been done).

Suggested tasks:

(1) Help us by suggesting how to clear things up for players, both new to Play-by-Post gaming, D&D, and RoA.

Feel free to post your ideas for improvement here or in a PM to the three head DMs (Annihilator, BadCatMan, and Windwalker) here in OOC.

(2) Input feats from new rulebooks as they come out.

We currently have most feats listed from all WotC D&D books that are in use here in RoA, but new ones always come out, so see if we're interested in that book, and if so, go to town, following the format of feats in the "Feats for RoA" thread.

(3) Help us input Unearthed Arcana.  See what rules from UA we are allowing for use in RoA in the thread devoted to Unearthed Arcana, then check to see what has already been done from that book.  If you see something that needs to be added, feel free to add it.

(4) Become an RoA DM!

Alert DM Windwalker to what you have done, and she'll award XPs once the work is done and will contact your DM, letting them know how you earned the XPs.

Check the RoA: OOC Forum threads and see what needs updating/fixing (that's part of earning the XPs -- going out and finding work to do).  Then make sure no one else has done or is doing it.  (Hands off the Sage thread, as Doc will be handling that.)

P.S. Please note: This is an XP award. It does not include the gold should your character attain a new level.

Thanks in advance to all who help out!

{Loosely based on DM Mike's first instructions}

Re: Earn XPs!  (Updated March 3, 2008)

This is an on-going list of links to websites outside of RoA and RPoL that may be helpful and if interest to players of RoA.

Players and DMs are encouraged to submit links to GAMING-ORIENTED sites (nothing over PG-13 rating, please) via PM to DM Windwalker who will them edit them into this message.

Please report any broken or down links to DM Windwalker via a PM.

Thanks!

============================================================================

First up, for players without the rulebooks:

Here is a link to the Wizards of the Coast website where you can download or view sections of the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Monster Manual.

There is also Psionic Information, too (Psionics are only allowed for PC use in Realms of Adventure in the Psionics "bubble region" - a bubble region is one that uses rules not allowed in a standard RoA region).

Keep one thing in mind: The d20 System Reference Document is not complete, but it gives you all the rules needed to play a standard d20 fantasy-based game.

The information is free, thanks to WoTC.

An interesting place to visit.  Articles and other resources.

The PDFs that this site has created are amazing.  Need information on a PrC?  Click on the link and it brings up a most comprehensive listing.  Want magic items broken down by cost in gp?  Same deal.  A wealth of info all on PDF (makes it possible to actually do some research from work <grin>)

Redblade, a character generation tool (c/o PC PrestonG).  You'll have to download and install it.

I also like to use PlayerGenie.  It starts with a free 30 use trial period.  After that, you have to buy the license.

How about http://www.giantitp.com?

It's a pretty good site with very funny D&D comics, but more importantly is about and run by a game designer, and has some interesting articles. He is a known contributer to the magazine Dragon and is involved in creating the MM3. In short, pretty gamer-oriented. But that's just a side benefit compared to the comics.

The formating of it is great, thought it's only another copy of 3.5 SRD.

Another SRD, but it has some of the other books and more PrC's in it.

The Forgotten Realms wiki is having an improvement drive! Through special arrangement with DM Mike players will be given Player Reward XPs for articles (out of my own fund of DM XPs no less).

So if you know anything about wikis and the world of the Forgotten Realms, then come help us become the ultimate FR DM and PC resource. Even if you don't know anything about wikis, we can help you learn.

Might I suggest:
http://www.nzcomputers.net/heroforge/

This has downloads to run a character generator that you can even override.  It has tons of books included for options.  Once you get the hang of it, you can create a character in no time flat.  It runs with Excel.  There is a character generator - Heroforge, Spell list generator - Spellforge, and a gestalt beta version that works really well also - Gestalt/Epic HF Beta 6.
