Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

The recently refurbished Scorpion wing of the Tsume Palace is obviously still in the process of being reestablished for the newly reinstated Great Clan.  Despite the lack of decor, however, little distinguishes this area from the seat of power that it once was--though there appears to be a singular lack of servants in this wing.  You are led to the quarters of Bayushi Tenma, where a masked servant in Scorpion colors offers you tea.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Entering the Scorpion representative's quarters, Daidoji Tsukiko casts a cursory look over the decor, thinking that it was somewhat lacking when compared with the ornamentation that adorned most of the walls in the Crane palace.

She nodded at the offer of tea, although she made a mental note not to drink from her cup until either Bayushi Kenji or Tenma himself had taken the first sip.  Though she would never say so openly, for to do so would cause unwanted conflicts and demands for the satisfaction of honour, she ahd heard tales of the Scorpion doctors and their less honourable uses of their craft.

"Please be so kind as to let Bayushi-sama know that we have arrived," the courtier asked of the servant before turning her attention once more to the room around her.  On the face of it, she was merely admiring the referbishments, but her watchful eyes tried to seek out any sign of a hiding place from which a spy might overhear their conversations.

[Private to GM: OOC: She doesn't have investigate so I'm assuming it would just be a trait roll - she's never hunted for such places as part of her duties; rather she's heard of such things and is looking for any sign.]

Kenji remained politely quiet, standing a partial pace behind the Daidoji.  It was only his presence here that would be useful, his words would be weak compared to those of the two ladies.  And so, he waited, apprently relaxed, but aware of his surroundings and any changes.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Sakura thanked the servant appropriately and then took a sip of her tea. There was no point in worrying about poison or such now; more importantly, this was not a time or place that such things would be used.

Sakura took a deep breath and let it out, taking a moment to focus her mind. Things here would be tricky at best ...

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Kedo, for his part has the potential to honourably decline refreshment - as a Yojimbo he would be expected to absent himself from the pleasures and comforts his ward may enjoy freely, and yet he bows with thanks when the masked servant extends her offer and accepts the tea, painfully aware of the sweat he was not given the chance to wash away after his earlier exercises and the poor showing he must make thereby.

A naturally fastidious man, this troubles him where the thought of Scorpion poisons and drugs do not (after all, short of some plot of machiavellian cunning, drugging guests in their own halls seems somehow... beneath... a clan fully capable of gettign what they want with words alone).

He seats himself a little behind Sakura and a little to one side with his tea held lightly in his hands, sipped from upon occasion as he lets himself slip half-way out of his mind and into a lightly contemplative state, alert only to the unusual as he considers the lessons of the day.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

The servant nods and departs.  Shortly afterwards a strikingly beautiful Scorpion lady limps in, a porcelain half mask covering the right side of her face and the Shosuro mon over her left breast.  "I am Shosuro Shinobu, tertiary aide to Bayushi Tenma," she bows deeply, "Bayushi-sama has other duties, but, in consideration of the status of our guests, will arrive shortly.  In the interim, how may the Scorpion serve?"

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Sakura eyed the Shosuro from behind her own "mask", the colors of the Crane Clan. Things had been rather strained for Sakura the last few years, having lost most of her adopted family, her entire birth family, and her Clan. Now the Clan had returned, but at what price? She often wished to go home, something that would have been trivial to arrange during the confusion of the Clan War, but that was not to be. Bayushi Kachiko had been quite clear that Sakura would do her clan the best exactly where she was. And now here she was, staring at someone who could very well be her last living relative.

But this did not matter to Shosuro Kasumi. She had her duty, and she would do it.

"Daidoji Sakura" Sakura replied with a polite bow. "I have been entrusted by Doji Kuwanan-Dono to negotiate a treaty with the Scorpion Clan."

"This is Daidoji Tsukiko" she continued, indicating the courtier. "since I am not well versed in the intricacies of these things, Tsukiko-San has volunteered to assist in the process."

"This is Bayushi Kenji-San" she said continuing the introductions, "and the ever vigilant Kedo-San."

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Tsukiko bowed respectfully towards Shinobu, as one would show respect to an opponent before a deadly duel.  And deadly this meeting would be; perhaps not for those assembled, but its outcome could work towards the death of many samurai.  Whether the greater losses would belong to the Lion or to the Crane would be the outcome decided today.

"It is an honour to make your acquaintance, Shosuro-san.  I pray that the ancestors, both yours and mine, look favourably upon our meeting.  Tsukiko's words flowed like rivers of silk as she spoke, her voice a delicate instrument played with as much care as she would her prized biwa.

"While I am certain that you are most able to conduct this meeting, Shosuro-san, I believe it would show greater courtesy is I and my companions waited until Bayushi-sama arrives.  Afterall, haste should never be allowed to cause ripples on the pond when  more thoughtful progress would maintain the beauty and repose of the water."

With her words conjuring images in the minds of those who listened, Tsukiko hoped to both ensure that Shosuro Shinobu was not offended by her reluctance to spell out the details of their visit, while buying time for Tenma to arrive.  It would be he who would wield the real power in striking up an alliance between Crane and Scorpion.

[Private to Kaze no Kage: OOC: Has Tsukiko met Shinobu before?  If so then I'll change the first thing she says to reflect that.  Secondly, what does Tsukiko know of Shinobu and Tenma?]

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

The ever-vigilant Kedo-san sips from his cup without showing the least indication that he has so much as heard a word, though a few moments later (no more than heartbeats) the Ronin seems to realise that the group is no longer alone and rises to bow deeply and fluidly towards the newest arrival, remaining upright thereafter until such time as permission is given once more to sit - he even seems to understand that his role here is strictly decorative, and therefore refrains from extending Tsukiko's metaphor into some philosophical point.

Which isn't to say one isn't rippling across the surface of his mind even now.

Kenji bows from his standing position.  He understood the reason for his presence here, and unless asked a question, his words would not be as effective as his mere presence.  He remained silent, watching the dance between between the Daidoji courtier, and the Shosuro.

"All true beauty is transient," Shosuro Shinobu responds, "so too is the delicate peace which you will shatter with your news.  Before you begin to wonder about the miraculous effectiveness of Scorpion spies," she smiles, "the fact that two representatives of the Crane--one of whom is a highly placed courtier--would insist upon seeing Bayushi Tenma on short notice and worry about what rumors sharing their news with one lame courtier, who isn't leaving the room in any case, could have indicates that you have some tumultuous information indeed.  But please yourselves," the Scorpion shrugs, "by the way, I invited you to discuss a recent marriage alliance proposal with Doji Igarashi--unless you would prefer other gossip regarding this meeting to begin."

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Not expecting Shinobu's forthright and, to some extent, rude reply, Tsukiko almost spat out the sip of tea she had taken, such was her surprise.  Instead she managed to choke the warm liquid down, staying silent until she was certain her voice would ring with its usual clarity.

"A marriage between two great families is, of course, an occasion for serious and important discussion.  Of course, we would not begin earnest negotiations without the blessing of Bayushi Tenma, as highest ranking representative of the Scorpion here in Toshi Ranbo."  Tsukiko's smile seemed fixed on her lips, though her eyes were incredibly serious; a marriage between two individuals was of little consequence to her at present.  A marriage between two Clans, temporary though it may be, was her goal.

"As for rumours, I am certain that those spies you mentioned are well-trained enough to know that the words spoken today have no place outside of this room."  There was something in the way that Tsukiko spoke those words that held a warning to Shinobu; if word was to get out about the particulars of this meeting she would know exactly who was to blame.

[Private to Kaze no Kage: Is the marriage proposal a real one, or is it entirely fiction as part of the cover story?  Also, who is Doji Igarashi?]

"Of course," Shosuro Shinobu smiles, not batting an eye at the implied threat, "but as it is to be my wedding we are discussing it would seem strange if no conversation occurred beforehand.  As for avoiding rumors, well, that is entirely impossible--particularly in a City such as this one--but if it comforts you to believe that silence can preserve your secrets then we shall wait.  In the meantime," she says looking at Bayushi Kenji, Daidoji Sakura, and Kedo, "tell me something of your travels, it has been more than a year since I had the opportunity to travel outside of Toshi Ranbo's borders."

[Private to Daidoji Tsukiko: Doji Igarashi is a low ranking bushi who developed an infatuation with Shosuro Shinobu during last year's Winter Court; he propositioned her several times and she always refused.  He took encouragement in the fact that she never appeared to be interested in anyone else either.  The proposal is real, though it has not progressed in almost a year.]

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Kedo of course remains quiet - such a question could not have been directed at him for it is simply the case that the doings of a Ronin can be of little or no interest to one with the affairs of a House to concern them, and there are those of greater station to speak first in any case.

Besides, there is some slight interest on his part in listening to the elegent knife-fight being carried out with sharpened words rather than sharpened steel going on between the Shosuro and Daidojo, drawing emotion rather than blood in the wake of each cut.

As a metaphor it might need polishing, but perhaps there is merit in it...

Tsukiko's smile broadened; an expression that had forecasted many a vicious strike in courtly battles past.

"Just as they have given you your strong mind, may your ancestors see fit to bless you with the gift of patience and a deeper understanding of the importance of silent contemplation in the coming days."

With the carefully crafted smile still spread across her lips, Tsukiko inclined her head in the direction of the Shosuro and then turned back to drinking her tea, as though it were the most important part of her day.  Every inch of her gave the impression that she would waste no more of her time on the clumsy Scoprion courtier until her elder, and better, superior arrived.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Two cups of tea later, a masked samurai in the colors of the Scorpion enters and glances briefly at the assembled Crane, Scorpion, and ronin before turning to the younger Scorpion courtier.  "Well, Shinobu-san?" his harsh voice rasps.

"They chose not to confirm what Kitsuki's Method has already revealed, Bayushi Tenma-sama," she reports, "opting to wait for you rather than revealing what they know regarding the imminent Lion attack."

"Very good," Tenma nods sharply, "you have proven the value of your training.  You are dismissed."

"Hai, sama," she bows, and limps from the room.

"So the Lion are preparing to attack," Bayushi Tenma growls, taking a seat and pouring himself a cup of tea, "and you come to the Scorpion.  Why?"

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Slowly setting her own cup down onto the low table she knelt before, Tsukiko looked across at Tenma, her expression one of utter seriousness.

I prefer to think of Rokugan as a disc, balancing upon a point located at the centre of the disc.  So long as the disc does not tip too far in favour of one side it will stay balanced and safe, but if one side is favoured more than the other then the entire disc will unbalance and come crashing down.

She paused a moment to allow those assembled to consider the metaphor before continuing.  "The Emperor's Right Hand has grown confident, too confident; they seem to believe that the Emperor will turn a blind eye to an attack on the other Clans.  Today their sights may be on Toshi Ranbo, but if their arrogant attack is not stopped, one day even Kyuden Bayushi may find a Lion Army outside its gates.  What then would the Scorpion do if all their allies had already suffered the same fate?"

She hoped Tenma would have the foresight to see that the fall of Toshi Ranbo to the Lion would only be the start of Rokugan's problems.

"Many lives were lost during the Clan Wars, Tenma-sama.  I would not see more lost needlessly before peace has fully been allowed to apply balm to the wounds of the Great Clans."

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

...and yet a disk may balance even unevenly if it but be spun well and with skill... that the extended metaphor serves in some part to support the occasionally graceless Daidoji in no way fails to recommend it to Kedo, who momentarily amuses himself with the mental image of the empire and the houses within it as a series of such spinning disks each spiralling through its complex dance atop yet further disks, the balance of one contributing to the balance of the whole... and somewhere far below, a tireless performer labouring to maintain the momentum.

But of course none of this passes his lips and little reaches his face save for a small smile of absent-minded musing replaced by a certain bone-deep sense of loss as the performer momentarily takes on the mask and flashing eyes of the one being who did more than any other to maintain the dance for so long, and who is now dead...

What would He make of all this?

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

"Toshi Ranbo is a far cry from Kyuden Bayushi," Bayushi Tenma shrugs dismissively, "more to the point, however, it is a nearly equally far distance from Kyuden Doji.  As a staging ground for the taking over of Crane lands and from there all of the Empire, Toshi Ranbo has the disadvantages of being isolated from the rest of your lands, in entirely the wrong direction, and originally a Lion City in the first place.

Further,"
he continues, taking a sip of his tea, "lives will be lost in this conflict in any case.  It remains only to be seen who will hold the City by the beginning of Winter.  In either case the advantages and disadvantages to the Crane and the Lion are clear.  What is less clear are the advantages to the rest of us."

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Sakura sat quietly, listening to the conversations and sipping her tea. Finally, however, things seemed to come to a standstill.

"The reason we are here" Sakura finally began, "is because Doji Kuwanan-Dono trusts my judgement."

'Do you truly understand what I can offer?'

"I planned this meeting long before we left for Toshi Ranbo, and long before we discovered a Lion army camped on our doorstep."

"There are many arrogant Samurai in Rokugan, those who believe that the Underhand is no longer necessary. Or that they could do the job equally well. More importantly, however, is that there are many who would take advantage of the situation. And, indeed, they are."

"What I am proposing is a full alliance, both on the battlefields and in the courts."

"There is an old saying, 'there are two sides to every mountain'. The Crane were always intended to increase and promote the Honour of Rokugan, and the Scorpion to protect Rokugan from dishonor. This is what we must return to."

"That is why I am here."

[Sakura/Kasumi is Idealistic. Keeping a city from Lion hands isn't enough for her; It has to serve the greater interests of Rokugan.]

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

"Now that is an entirely different proposition," Bayushi Tenma replies with a raspy bark of laughter, "and philosophically I would support such an alliance, but there is a vast discrepancy between philosophy and practice.  Protecting the Empire from dishonor is what cost the Scorpion their place in the Empire during the Clan War--and it is not just Shoju's folly that I speak of.  If the Scorpion had been less reviled, had doing our duty been less odius to the Empire, we would never have fallen so far.  The Scorpion are still in the process of reestablishing our place in the Empire to ask us to so openly dishonor ourselves now is to ask us to court disaster--the Scorpion cannot do their duty if they no longer exist.  Leaving that aside for the moment," he continues, "and returning to your immediate problem, if the Crane desire concrete aid from the Scorpion, then you shall have to offer some concrete garuntees."

"The longest journey must begin with a single step, and now is the best time to begin this journey. Where the Crane lead in honor, the rest of the Empire must follow -- or be dishonored."

"Not since Lady Doji has there been a Crane Lord so well equipped to handle this monumental task. He is both honorable and pragmatic, well able to emulate his first ancestor."

"However, being pragmatic, he is willing to start with mutual assurances of non-aggression. I'm sure that the Dowager Empress* would be happy to know that she has one less enemy to worry about right now."

"I cannot speak for this city's governor, for that I must defer to Tsukiko-San, but I can offer our first bit of cooperation for the good of the Empire."

"On the way here we met up with an Imperial messenger who had been attacked by bandits. This would be a small story had not her salvation come by the hands of Darkness."

"One of those messages must have been very important for a contingent of this size to be sent, but I do not know which message was so important. I have alerted our guards, however only the Kitsuki and Scorpion Magistrates are used to regularly dealing with such things."

Sakura drew the tea to her lips, nodding to Tsukiko as she did.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

"As Doji Kuwanan-domo has led so will those under his command follow.  Rokugan must present a strong and united front as much as may be for who knows what evil in the Shadowlands still lurks, waiting for one foolish act to bring about a conflict that would rival the Clan War."

Though nothing specific was said, there was little doubt in the minds of those assembled, just who Tsukiko was speaking of.  She was certain, in her heart, that should the Lion attack and take Toshi Ranbo, it would only be the beginning of something much worse.

"And let us not forget that the Winter Court is to be held in Toshi Ranbo; if a battle were to bring the city to its knees then valuable time for courtly negotiations would be lost.  All Clans would be at a disadvantage for the winter will pass without strong ties, once weakened by the loss of blood, being remade."

Tsukiko's voice became more powerful as she spoke, so infused with conviction that none might question her sincerity.

"It is time to remind the Lion that their place is as the protectors of Rokugan, throwing assumed weight around in the manner of lowly ronin."  There was a moment's pause as Tsukiko turned to Kedo.  "Present company excluded, ronin Kedo."  She did not wait to see what Kedo's reaction was; her comment served not only to make the Lion's actions appear dishonourable but also to remind Kedo that if he stepped out of line then he two would be considered lowly in Tsukiko's eyes.

"Our loyalty is to the safety of Rokugan and to the most excellent Emperor; stopping a war between Clans before it begins and weakens Rokugan once more would be a logical step in assuring this safety.  If the Scorpion's wishes and loyalties are the same then why should we not work together to ensure this?"

"Still, if loyalty is not assurance enough, then please speak of the assurances that would set your mind and heart at rest and we shall see what can be agreed upon."  Tsukiko knew that no negotiator in their right mind would risk so much on mere spoken words, as irreproachable as a samurai's oath was; she only hoped that the price Tenma named was not too high.

Kedo, for all his philosophical leanings and undeniable martial skill does have one distinct area of weakness - his social skills, whilst not as crude as one might expect from a Ronin revolve mostly around honest, sincere demonstration of belief rather than subtle deception. As a result the nod of concession that Daidoji receives comes with a small and slightly detached smile that might offend rather than reassure, as it in no way disguises how little the Daidoji's words move him - as if even the possibility of insult from the elegent crane is as small as to bear no thinking upon.

That's not how he means it of course - but he is so little moved that it is very readily how it could be seen.

"It is one option, certainly," Tsukiko spoke slowly, unsure of the suggestions.  "However, I would like to bring to everyone's consideration that the arrangement of which Kenji-san speaks is an important one and one that would effect both the Crane child and the adoptive Scorpion family greatly.  It is important to ensure that an alliance will not be ruined by mismatched people.  The process can take months, sometimes years, to arrange so as to be of satisfaction to both parties and it is time we do not have at our leisure.  However, I would not rule out this course of action entirely."

Tsukiko hoped that the offer of a Crane child as hostage would not be an avenue that would have to be taken; if it were, she was only glad that her remaining full-blooded brother was still too young to leave his family's protection on such a venture.

"Bayushi-sama, what would put your mind at rest that the Crane speak and act with sincerity towards the Scorpion in this matter?"  Tsukiko asked; perhaps if she knew what the Scorpion wanted then the matter could be resolved quickly without giving more to the Scorpion than was needed.

"If the Crane would be willing to make the commitment of such an offer of confidence," Bayushi Tenma nods approvingly, "then the Scorpion would be willing to postpone determining exactly who will be our guest until we are successful in our endeavors.  After all," he smiles grimly, "if we fail then there was little purpose in making an agreement in the first place."  Left unsaid is the fact that, should the Crane be successful with the aid of the Scorpion, they will be obligated to offer a more highly born hostage or grant the Clan of Secrets even more concessions in the courts.

"In the interim," the Scorpion courtiers says, offering more food for thought, "what would the Crane see as our place in a long term alliance?"

"We are willing to discuss the exact details later." Sakura replied confidently, "I have been given a wide latitude for these negotiations; however, as a matter of Clan honor, there are certain things that must go directly to Kuwanan-Dono for us just as there are certain things that would need to go to Lady Kachiko for you. For instance, any hostages -- other than myself -- would most certainly need to be cleared. While I would love to think of my self as important, I am not ... so I doubt I would be sufficient."

"In the long term, we see the new alliance in the same light of cooperation as Lady Doji did with Lord Bayushi. Details will need to be hammered out of course -- things like what happens if one of us is ready to go to war with the other's ally -- but many things can be determined in the short run. We will, for instance, have no problem supporting the Scorpion's return to the courts in their old position. We can and will remind others, for instance, that this was the order set down by the Kami and only the Emperor himself has the right to change it."

"And, when you are successful here, Kuwanan-Dono will certainly see fit to aid you militarily should you so request it. He may even be able to lend you his voice with Toshimoko-Dono; Toshimoko-Dono is too honorable to play politics, of course, but he will listen to reason. And he will always do what is best for the Empire."

"Aas we have seen in the last war, the continued presence of the Scorpion is good for the Empire. Even if the fears of the Honorable cause them to deny it."

"The Crane will also defer to the Scorpion as the Emperor's Underhand, actively giving the Scorpion information that may be need to combat dishonor in the Empire, similar to what I did earlier."

The shugenja risks offering too much, Tsukiko thought worriedly as Sakura spoke.  Was Kuwanan-dono wrong to entrust this task to one so inexperienced in these matters?  There was no time, though, for any more consideration; Tsukiko knew she had better limit any further exuberant offers.

"The support of the Crane during such an event as the Winter Court is to be of an advantage, Bayushi-sama.  The Scorpion's path to regaining their standing in Rokugani eyes would be hastened onwards by the good words of the Crane.  Where best to show how well the Crane trust the Scorpion, how love for the Empire's stability sweeps away all other considerations, than to have our two Clans standing side-by-side in an undefeated Toshi Ranbo during the Winter Court in attendance on the Emperor?"

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

"Your offer of a long term alliance is interesting," Bayushi Tenma replies, "and I will send word of it directly to my Daimyo, regardless of how these negotiations go.  In years to come, an alliance between the Crane and the Scorpion could be...historic.

"But coming back to our immediate issue, what the Scorpion have to gain by standing beside the Crane against the most militarily talented Clan in the Empire,"
Bayushi Tenma replies wryly, "is the honor of standing beside the Crane?  Come now Daidoji-san, surely you can do better than that.  The Scorpion will be coming materially and irrevocably to the aid of the Crane and further garnering the emnity of the Lion, and all you can offer is the vague notion of your support?  Unless you intend to offer the Crane's backing to every proposal the Scorpion makes--an offer which I doubt you have the authority to present and one that I wouldn't believe even if you did--you are going to have to be more specific."

A faint and thoughtful 'hmm' issues as faintly as a whisper from between the lips of the politely seated Ronin as a thought passes over the surface of his mind, stirred by the discussion happening around him into rising up from the depths of insight where his naturally meditative thought processes had filed away the map of Lion activities beyond the walls of the city.

He makes no more noise however, nor offers his thoughts unbidden.

Such would be deeply, unspeakably inappropriate.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Tsukiko glanced, though only for an instance, in the ronin's direction, wondering just what had crossed his mind.  Reluctantly she turned her attention back to Tenma and the tricky situation at hand.  She had been hoping to only offer some vague concession until she had more time to consider what could be arranged without giving too much to the Scorpion Clan but it seemed Tenma was more than aware of what she was trying to do, accustomed to life as a courtier as he was.

"Your aide, Shosuro Shinobu, mentioned the possibility of accepting the marriage proposal of the Crane whose affections she seems to have won.  Ties of blood, and so ties between blood through marriage, are often far stronger than anything written upon paper, Tenma-sama."

Tsukiko's expression and tone of voice were thoughtful as she spoke calmly and slowly, turning the idea over in her mind.  "If such a union were to be arranged, perhaps even finalised at the Winter Court, perhaps that would be the first step to a material bond between Scorpion and Crane.  Of course," the young courtier smiled, "the union of only two people is hardly cause for the Scorpion to wish to come to our aid, so I offer a further guarantee in the hope that it would please you.  The children born of Crane blood are most precious to our Clan, just as those born of Scorpion blood are precious to yours.  Such lives are to be nourished and protected.  As assurance of our alliance, I would propose that the first born child of Shosuro Shinobu and Doji Igarashi be sent to a Scorpion school to learn the ways of the Scorpion.  The second born child would learn at a Crane school and any further children would be subject to their parents' wishes.  Thus the first and second born children of this union between Scorpion and Crane blood would, by technicalities, be guest of one Clan as assurance of non-aggression by the other.  If that solution would please you then perhaps I might speak with Kuwanan-domo to ensure that this can take place as I have spoken?"

Sakura did have something else to say to Tenma, but at the moment it was important to allow the other pair to spar. When she heard Kedo, she gently -- and politely -- drew her fan and put it in front of her lips.

[Private to Kedo: "Yes, Kedo-Kun?" she asked softly.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

As it should happen, Kedo does have a notion that may be of value - and when the fan is extended (a little strangely, but the pretence is enough to preserve manners) to blow across his lips they move through words spoken barely above a breath.

"I cannot speak for the heirs of Akodo's strategy, but they have assembled a mighty force with which to implement it. Greater than the Crane could field or, I believe that it would be wise for the Scorpion to commit. But their very strength is their weakness."

A moment to let that sentence find approval or distaste and he goes on, largely expressionless as mon and banners dance behind his eyes in a visualisation of war... "Only superstitious peasants speak of 'ninja' and accuse the clan of Masks, but it is still true that the Scorpion have amongst their number some of the finest hunters, most skillful scouts. Where an army would only stir the Lion to greater efforts, spoiled rice and warped arrowshafts, rotten fish and tainted water would compel their withdrawal. Performed with delicacy and skill, this might allow them to depart with honour, claiming a 'demonstration' rather than an invasion, whilst it would do no harm to the honour of Crane or Scorpion to have preserved the lives of countless Samurai and ensured the peace of the winter court... even if the method could not be spoken of, not for fear of dishonour but because it might rouse the ire of the Lion once more."

Which is to say, a good general studies tactics... a great general studies logistics.
Kedo seems to be working his way up towards the latter.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

When the fan dropped from in front of Sakura's lips, there was a large smile on her face. She had been thinking along those lines for a short while, but she never expected the honorable Ronin to suggest such a thing.

"If I may" Sakura politely interrupted, "I believe that Kedo-Kun has an important point. The Scorpion should not aid the Crane ... with troops."

"It would be an insult, Bayushi-Sama" Sakura continued, "not only to your intelligence but to your clan's duty as well to say that we would always agree with you in the courts."

"There is a story, circulated I believe among the Dragon, that seems appropriate. There was once twins, Ueui* and Uefuta*, both Bushi from the same school. They were from a minor family, and were quite eager to see that their family earned glory and status. So, to improve themselves for the benefit of their family and clan, they became rivals. After all, who better to challenge their growth than their own twin?"

"No matter where they went and what they did, they turned it into a contest. When on the field of battle on would call out how many enemies he had slain, and the other would call out how many he had slain."

"This rivalry went on for quite some time. Soon there were rumors circulated, that the two were bitter enemies. They did not concern themselves with rumors, however, for the two knew the truth.

<Blue>"Then, at winter court, a high ranking Imperial courtier was offended by a Shugenja from the same family as the twins. He demanded a duel, and Ueui was asked to champion for the Shugenja. The Courtier then demanded that his twin, Uefuta, champion him. It was a duel to the death, and no matter who won the Clan would loose an honorable Samurai. Either way, he reasoned, he would get his revenge."

"The day of the duel came and the two brothers appeared on the dueling field together -- both wearing white. They took their stances and focused for what seemed to be an eternity. Then, in an instant blades were drawn and one brother lay dead. A moment later the second brother took his own life in protest."

"But no one knew which brother was which."

"The matter was over, for dueling etiquette required that it was settled. If the offended parties did not know which was which, that was their problem -- but now there was the issue of which Samurai was to commit seppuku. In the end, the Shugenja was given an honorable Seppuku, the Courtier was cast to the waves for his failure, and for their honor and cunning the twins' family was honored by the Emperor himself."

"The courtier assumed that the two rivals were enemies, but they were not. They worked toward a common cause, competing with each other because they knew that no matter who won it would bring honor to their family. In other words, no matter who 'won' in public, they would both win in reality."

Sakura smiled, pausing for a dramatic moment before she continued.

"Kedo-Kun, would you please explain your observations for Tenma-Sama?"

[You're not going to make me do a Storytelling roll, are you? ;p

Ueui - "First out" (oldest twin). Uefuta - "Second out" (youngest twin). Oh, and for the record, I made that story up.

I made my courtier roll as well.

"The Scorpion know well the value of a ronin's insights, Kedo-san," Bayushi Tenma replies, obviously enormously entertained by Daidoji Sakura's tale but also sincere in his appreciation of the ronin, "we shared the ronin's path not so long ago, and the Scorpion do not forget their history.  You may always speak freely in my presence."

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

He shows willingness to listen to a lowly ronin but faults me at every turn! Tsukiko thought incredulously.  She picked up her cup of tea, bringing it to her lips and sipping a little as she battled to retain her composure.  Her attention fell more upon Tenma than the ronin she had arrived with.  I guess, perhaps, he feels more comfortable in the presence of a man whose honour is as low as his own.  But by the Fortunes, if Kedo does not make good on this opportunity, I shall be greatly displeased.

Tsukiko nodded her grudging agreement, not trusting herself to speak levelly.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

Kedo may lack the polished courtiers skill that the others possess in such abundance, but as he begins to speak it very rapidly becomes apparent that his strengths do not solely lie in his good right (or left) arm...

Bowing in gratitude to each of the honourable Clan samurai in the room he raises a hand to indicate the land beyond the walls, and most specifically the arc of the known Lion armies...

"From the known deployments of Lion forces that I have been privilaged to share the knowledge of it seems that either there is another force, at least as large either operating in concealment or maneuvering into position on their flank, or the heirs of Akodo have forsaken many of his most fundamental precepts of war."

"Even if this is not so however, they represent a greater force than the armies of the Crane in this region can hope to face in open battle and defeat - further, unless the Scorpion have considerably more strength in the region than seems likely, no commitment of their forces will significantly change the outcome of a field battle.

Moving forwards to the table and looking for permission from the host before his hands move, Kedo smoothly arranges the tea-mat and a few exquisite decorative cups (not without commenting softly upon their quality) to represent as best he is able the deployments on the map from the Crane war room, "But as in the first principle of Kaze-do, when an enemy is stronger than you, that strength should be turned against him. In this case the greatest strength of the Lion - well trained and disciplined though they are - appears to be their numbers."

Looking up around the table to see if he is being humoured so far he nods a small gesture of thankfulness, and moves on "The Scorpion are known to possess some of the finest scouts and hunters in the Empire, men whose duty it is to see and not be seen, act and not be noticed. Men who know that there is honour in preventing unecessary conflict as well as in cutting down a foe."

"None doubt the courage of the Lion forces, but a man does not fight well on tainted water and rotten fish, spoiled rice and sour fruit." - this is said with a small smile as he gestures across the earlier-explained 'deployments' on the table and lets the mind consider just how many tons of each so many thousand Lion Bushi will need in the field.

"There are implications of course. Though I do not see this course as dishonourable it must not be spoken of - the Lion may be allowed to depart with honour if their supplies prove unreliable, perhaps claiming the maneuver to be a demonstration of intent, but should they discover that they are being laughed at by foolish foes their anger will be great. Also they may well choose to forage in the rich lands around the city, but I believe that at this juncture it would be easier to make a diplomatic solution rather than have them lose face by being responsible for destroying the countryside in which the Winter Court will be held."

The Ronin then brings his hands together, bowing smoothly once more as his voice takes on that honest, self-deprecating tone that seems, alarmingly to be completely honest... "I am afraid that I have seen no further into the possibilities of this campaign as yet - though I have many ideas for deployment and maneuver they are... as yet untainted by experience. No doubt the insights of one who truly knows Strategy will be of great value if this idea finds merit."

Bayushi Tenma's eyes narrow at Kedo's speech.  "You are asking the Scorpion to walk that edge of dishonorable actions that brought us to ruin not long ago," he replies, "we would not hesitate to do so on behalf of the Emperor, but to do so on behalf of the Crane..." he pauses, considering, "for us to do so you would take the brunt of the responsibility for the actions we take, should it come to that.  Will the Crane take that risk?"

[Private to Daidoji Tsukiko: While Bayushi Tenma was quite clear in his desire to secure a marriage alliance, you noticed that he was quick to shift the conversation away from specifics and was careful not to even imply that the couple you suggested would, in fact, be the marriage arranged.  You also noticed his eyes flicker briefly towards Bayushi Kenji.]

Sakura looked mildly surprised, and definitely disappointed, at Tenma's reaction.

'Have the Scorpion fallen so far since I have been home?!?' she thought to herself. She took a moment to recompose herself before responding.

"I am the one asking" Sakura replied firmly, "and I am the one who will take responsibility for failure. The Crane Clan will pay for success, however. Doji Kuwanan-Dono is a very practical man when it comes to these matters."

She paused before adding one more thing.

"I am, however, very disappointed in your inference that your troops might get caught. The Scorpion I knew did not get caught unless they wished it. However, if you are seriously concerned about this possibility then I shall take care of it myself."

It was as close as she would get to open debate.

"The Scorpion do not fail, Daidoji," Bayushi Tenma sneers, "but it will be the Scorpion, not the Crane, who will be accused regardless of our actual involvement.  And it will be the Scorpion, not the Crane, who will face the Lion's wrath at the end of Winter.  The Scorpion are not so foolish as to challenge the Emperor's Right Hand on behalf of the Crane without certain assurances.  The Emperor's Left Hand is not the Emperor himself, to call upon the Scorpion's services at will."

"We may not be the Emperor himself, Bayushi-sama," Tsukiko's voice was hard and cool as the ice atop Yama sano Kaminari, "but our hearts are as set upon the restoration of Rokugan after The Ninth Kami's wave of destruction, as the Emperor's is.  We have offered to arrange the prodigious marriage between Shosuro Shinobu and Doji Igarashi as assurance of our intent to have Crane and Scorpion working side by side for the greater glory of Rokugan," the courtier stressed the names of those two particular samurai, having become suspicious that Tenma had other samurai in mind for such an arrangement as he had not dwelt upon the matter for long.

"Such a union would be announced at the Winter Court, publicly showing the amiable nature of the relationship between the Crane and Scorpion clan.  It is a generous offer; how many of the other major clans have so openly embraced the Scorpion clan in recent times?"

Before Tenma could speak, Tsukiko moved on so as not to be caught up in debate before she had finished what she wanted to say.  The words did not rush from her lips, however; her speech was measured and her voice was calm.  "Still, I do not deny that the Scorpion hold some risk in this venture.  If the Scorpion feel it is beyond their capability to carry out the plan that the ronin Kedo suggests then we shall accept the Scorpion's judgement on their own abilities and respectfully retire to consider other avenues open to us."

With a polite smile and nod in Tenma's direction, Tsukiko shuffled back a few inches, making as though to rise from the table.

Honour is not in what another thinks of one - but in what knows of one's self. The same words that Kedo spoke to Daidoji Sakura in the hills outside of the city are no less true in this well appointed chamber - perhaps the location grants them additional weight, for do they not strike to the core of what it is to be Scorpion? (and so more than a little unexpected to be on the lips and in the mind of a Ronin).

He nonetheless bows in apology towards the delegate and withdraws a step, leaving whatever further refinements and notions are unfolding behind his eyes unspoken, but perhaps having made a mark that will be remembered later.

Even a Ronin can have his uses.

"Perhaps you had best reconsider what it is you wish to accomplish, Crane," Bayushi Tenma shrugs, "you are the ones who have approached the Scorpion for significant military aid--with an offer that the Sparrow would sneer at.  You are not the Emperor, to demand that the Scorpion act at your will--if you would be our allies, then know that we will not serve at your beck and call without question.  And then to question our competence?" the Scorpion courtier's eyes flash dangerously, "if your goal was to add the Scorpion to your growing list of enemies, then you are certainly on the right path," he says standing, "this interview is at an end.  Feel free to return when you are prepared to negotiate in earnest."  With that Bayushi Tenma bows and departs.

Sakura fought a tear from her eyes. Have I been gone so long? She took a deep breath before rising.

"I must find the Kitsuki trained Shosuro" she announced to anyone who might be listening. "Then Kedo and I have an appointment or three to keep."

She then turned to the other Daidoji in the room. "By all means, please make your report to the Lord of the City."

It was as close to being "dismissive" as she could get without being rude.

"I must consider a few things in relative solitude, and Kedo-Kun has an appointment to keep."

Sakura rose, the emotion poorly hidden behind her eyes. Of all the people in the room, only Bayushi Kenji could truly understand what she felt. Then, without asking or saying anything, she left the room to find the Shosuro who had previously greeted them. Kedo would follow her, of course ...

 ...Of course.

Though convenient that the Daidoji girl is intending to ensure that he will be able to be present at the meal to which he has been invited, it is rather unfortunate that she chose to mention it - In his opinion, Kedo has already put himself rather too firmly in the eye of those whose business it is to watch by speaking up, even when invited to do so.

Having it mentioned that an honourable clan samurai is arranging her plans to suit his 'social life' however... It can do no good, no good at all.

He follows irregardless, after bowing with no particular hint of irony to each of the others present. There are things to be about, after all.

Re: Chapter 3 - Weakness is my Strength

As Tenma left, Tsukiko stood deep in thought, more than a little surprised at the way the Scorpion has spoken.  Any courtier of the Crane would have ashamed to have been so coarse in speech; Tenma's behaviour and attitude would have fitted better into the Clan court of the Crab than that of the Scorpion she knew of old.

Perhaps life as a dishonoured and disbanded Clan has taught the Scorpion to snarl like curs and tuck their tails between their legs than to speak elegantly and listen to reason she thought in the privacy of her mind.

Daidoji Sakura:
"I must find the Kitsuki trained Shosuro" she announced to anyone who might be listening. "Then Kedo and I have an appointment or three to keep."

Turning her mind outwards to take in those around her, Tsukiko turned her head in the direction of the other Daidoji, merely nodding her head in agreement.

Daidoji Sakura:
She then turned to the other Daidoji in the room. "By all means, please make your report to the Lord of the City."

Daidoji Tsukiko blinked twice at the dismissal, but said nothing.  I wonder if Bayushi Tenma's abhorrent attitude is catching. she considered, irritation simmering in her mind, but carefully kept from showing on her features.

Daidoji Sakura:
"I must consider a few things in relative solitude, and Kedo-Kun has an appointment to keep."

"Of course, Sakura-san.  We all have much to think about, but do not be dismayed.  It is customary for courtiers to test each others' weaknesses, to see how much might be asked of the other.  Once Bayushi Tenma has time, as we will, to consider the options available then I believe we shall be able to come to an arrangement.  In the meantime, we must be as patient as time can allow and not close our mind to other options that might turn the tide in our favour."

Tsukiko bowed as Sakura moved past her, seeming to have said all she needed to say until the other samurai were just about to leave the room.

"Sakura-san," Tsukiko's voice was soft and full of concern, although whether this concern were real or pretended was anyone's guess, "if you are to speak with Shosuro-san, I would urge caution.  She is a trained courtier and, as such, may try to make you promise things that would place you in a difficult position in return for her help.  I would urge against making any such promises unless you are certain beyond doubt that they can be kept.  I have great faith that this will not be a problem for you."  And then she was silent once more; whatever her thoughts were, only Tsukiko knew them.

"Of course." Kedo replies without the least apparent surprise - utterly unoffended by what is, after all a perfectly reasonable request and duly finding something interesting to do in the form of seating himself on a convenient garden bench some few yards outside of conversational range (so any 'hushed' conversation would be quite completely private) then drawing a small 'pillow book' from his gray clothing and settling to study it.
