Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

It is perhaps no coincidence that two such unusual monks as Satoru and Doji Sotan would find themselves on similar errands within the halls of Toshi Ranbo.

"Ah, Doji Sotan-san," Satoru bows, "what brings you to the prison area?"

"Lower your voice," Satoru hisses, then speaks more reasonably--but still barely above a whisper, "Daidoji Sakura also spoke of corruption within the Crane and I saw the proof of it with my own eyes, but there is no need to advertise our internal concerns to our...associates," he says with a significant look at Bayushi Kenshin, "no offense to our honored Scorpion...guests, but this is a family matter...I'm sure you understand the necessary discretion."

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Kenshin bowed politely to Sotan, but remained quiet as the two Crane went about their business. He remained quiet until the two spoke of corruption.

"I assure you" Kenshin said quietly, "the Scorpion Clan is nothing if not discrete. It is our way to deal with such issues quietly, preferably in a way that benefits both parties involved."

Kenshin smiled before he continued. It was a genuine smile, one without deceit or hidden purpose. Kenshin was, after all, Junshin. Deceit was simply not his way.

"But that is not my concern. My concern is getting you to your meeting, which means getting you both to Daidoji Sakura-Sama. Safely, discretely, and quickly ..."

[For those who wish to know (some sort of Awareness roll, but I forget the rules right off hand), Kenshin's honor is 5.5.]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"I know very little," Satoru replies, frustrated, "but I have many theories but very few facts."

Before anyone can delve any further into these mysteries, Daidoji Sakura, Kedo, Moto Gyatso, Lin Ru-Fang, and Kakita Ichiro emerge deep in conversation.

"Daidoji Sakura-san," the one armed monk bows, "I have other duties which take me away from your investigation, but first I have an update regarding Doji Kusanagi's ersatz servants:  they're dead.  This woman is a relative of the late Shinichi.  If you require more I will be with Bayushi Kenshin-san and Shosuro Shinobu-san discussing our relationship with the Scorpion."

Kenshin bowed politely to the newcomers, but he said nothing. His superiors were about, and he had learned long ago not to interrupt. So instead he gave a friendly glance to Ichiro.

There would be time enough for training later ... or so he thought.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Sakura looked at the small group with some interest. News of the deaths of the servants came as no surprise to her, though she supposed that it should have. She was also not terribly surprised at seeing the Scorpion, though she supposed that she should have been. It should have even been comforting, knowing that the Clan had also taken an interest in the situation.

But why did they send the Junshin?

"I'm sorry for your loss" she told the old woman, "I'm sure they died honorably and will be compensated in the courts of Emma-O. I will say a prayer for them ..."

She then looked to Satoru.

"Then it is as we feared. Thank you for your assistance, Brother Monk."

Things were not good. The question now was whether Daidoji Ryu had been compromised, or if it was just the Head of the Daidoji in this city and he had been dragged along with it. But there was no question in Sakura's mind that at least one of them had become compromised to the Darkness ...

Which reminded Sakura of something.

Sakura pulled out the picture that she had drawn of the assassins faces. It seemed like years ago, yet it had been less than an hour.

"Do you recognized these people?" she asked the old woman. If anyone would know, it was likely to be her ...

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"My apologies, Sama," the old woman bows automatically, "but I do not.  My s-son was familiar with a very many Samurai, but I am n-not..." this appears as far as the woman's willpower can take her as she breaks down into silent tears.

everyone make a Perception/Investigation check, the notice emphasis applies, but is not necessary--FYI this is not an "is she lying" check (which would be awareness/investigation with the interrogation emphasis ^_^)

A haggard looking samurai stumbles into the hall.  His normally organized hair has a few loose strands and mud marks his armor.  His face is largely hidden by a half mask of black lacquered wood worked with scorpions but the expression in his eyes is severe.  His hand rests on his hilt.  He quickly approaches the group, specifically moving to Sakura's side and speaks in hushes tones.
"Danger approaches.  Harriers come to kill you," he whispers hurriedly.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Kedo follows Sakura and the others at a polite distance, maintaining his discrete overwatch upon the safety of the Crane Shugenja even as he patiently awaits the opportunity to hand that safety over to her own clan. Remaining impassive through the very slightly shameful (but entirely justified) show of emotion on the part of the woman he is therefore alert and aware when Bayushi Kenji storms in, hand on hilt and radiating purpose.

Needless to say, without really having seemed to need to move, the Ronin is considerably closer to Kenji's sword-arm by the time the Scorpion arrives than he would have been had he not drifted forwards.

One might almost think he was paranoid or something.

"Kedo-Kun!" Sakura said, "Stand Alert!" It was not Kedo she was talking to really, though it would serve to alert him to present danger.

Not that he didn't know that already.

"As I told the governor" she continued to the rest of the group, "it was only a matter of time before the enemy came to kill me."

"Now, they are on the way ..."

Sakura thought hard for a moment. Battle was not her forte', and she had "wasted" most of her abilities on the earlier battle. Had she known they were Shadow Hunters, she would have done her best to reign Kedo in ... and not to aide him.

'The question is' she thought to herself, 'how much do they know?'

Midly surprised at the arrival of the Scorpion and the sudden hasty preparations for combat Gyatso switched his gaze from Skaura to the newcomer in turn. "And who do you intend to be fighting then? You say the "enemy" comes, can you clarify who they are?" And have the same opinion of his own importance if so. was his second thought. Her earlier claims about being targeted by the enemy for being able to discover them seemed true but Sakura still had not explained how they knew this. Not bothering to pick up a weapon he looked to the heavens in momentary aggravation. It truly did look like today would be a somewhat energetic experience.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Now that's something of a relief, and it doesn't take more than a moment for Kedo to think and make the rapid decision to suggest, "Close quarters somewhere well built, with limited access." - neatly providing for the ability of a few skilled swordsmen to stand off many more well-armed warriors, hopefully without the creation of impromptu doors by a little brute force and, more importantly preventing their attackers from just sneaking around behind them.

With that in mind, Kedo starts to look around the area (and where the hell are we anyway? ^_^) to try and pick somewhere out - preferably a private dwelling or business rather than an official structure, to minimise the chance of their being an additional way in.

Of course, he's still spattered with dried blood from the last life or death struggle he was in without a chance to clean up - and there's a really nasty spreading bruise on his temple that must be troubling him, but hey - at least he's dressed this time.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Ichiro had been in a daze these last few moments.  The revelations, if they were to be believed of the duplicitous nature of some of the most high standing members of the Crane Clan in this city had left the young samurai with too much to consider and he had unfortunately completely failed to see his friend and part time training rival Bayushi Kenshin when they all first assembled.

Ichiro had barely gotten out a polite bow to his friend when news of potential combat snapped his body and mind to attention.  Quickly his eyes scoured the surroundings for trouble even as he moved closer to Moto Gyatso.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The prisons are located beneath the Tsume Palace, but inaccessible from the palace itself.  There is a guard house behind the palace proper, occupying a small courtyard--it is through that guard house that you entered and exited the prisons, and through that courtyard which you are passing to reach the buildings of the courtier district.

The buildings of the courtier district are large and opulent but packed tightly together--two of normal size might be able to walk side by side, if they were friendly with one another--and none of them have entrances which face the palace.

OOC:  it will take you one combat round to reach the nearest alleyway; it will take the old woman two
returning to the guard house will take 2 combat rounds; three for the old woman

[Private to Kedo: from the corner of your eye, you see two figures with bows stepping out from the shadows of the guard house and take aim; you get to act in the surprise round]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

 "Apologies."

The word has barely left Kedo's lips when the nearly subliminal sound of steel whispering from its sheath breaths a silken accompaniement to it, two separate and distinct tones marking the arrival in-hand of both Katana and Wakizashi as the humbly dressed Ronin rotates his body about that of Sakura, giving her a firm wall-wards butt-bump on the way, to put him between the Shugenja and one end of the guard house before either sword has completely left its scabbard.

It seems as though he feels something is afoot.

[Private to GM:  This is an incredibly bad idea for a man in no armour, but I'm going to 'take one for the team' between the archers and Sakura whilst remaining close enough to her to interdict the likely other assailants who might use this as a distraction to get in close. The bump will hopefully make that easier as it puts her up against a wall.
This would probably be a good time to ask about arrow cutting, since of my TN 33 to be hit, only about 9 points comes from sword skill, the rest is defence (dodge) or reflexes (dodge), earth ring (evasion technique) and I don't think I can claim it if I'm deliberately using myself as cover for someone. ^_^
]

[Private to Daidoji Sakura:  You my girl, are being arse-barged into a wall - unless you'd like to roll dice, just go with it. Suffice to say that Kedo seems to be making like the secret service.]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The long mustached merchant had gone fairly silent since leaving the location of the prison. No doubt just happy to get away from the cells and the ghosts. Of course, perhaps he also took too many drags off of that pipe of his.

Whatever, the reason, his exhubriant mannerisms and strange 'other worldness' seems to fade just a bit and he falls into the backdrop, as likely to be taken as a random servant or attendant as he is a ronin or anything else. Although he was beginning to wonder if he was going to have any opportunity to make some koku following the two shugenja and the arrogant samurai retainers around. But then, it's not like his merchant caravan can exactly leave the city at the time being, so there is no real harm in sticking around to find out what he can about the dangers threatening the Daidoji, one of his most favorite trading partners right behind the Yasuki and the Yoritomo.

He lets Sakura continue her investigation, simply listening and waiting to hear anything interesting. Unfortunately, he is better at dispensing information than picking it up and so he doesn't hear anything particularly interest-- well, that is until the Scorpion approaches.

He is alarmed at hearing that the group is being targetted and soon to be attacked and stumbles a bit in sheer shock of this revealation. That this warning is dispensed by one the Crane clan's most prominent rivals is more or less lost on him (as is the motley and disjoined Clan membership within this particular group) as he's never quite gotten used to the strict delinations.

"Well..." he stutters nervously, as he quickly looks around for the quickest means of escape and tries to make sure to put the well-trained swordsmen between himself and the direction the Scorpion came from, "Never been attacked in the middle of a city like this before... at least they were kind enough to send warning."

No one would seriously expect the portly merchant to fight, would they? Yes, he does have a sword, but it isn't a katana and one might image is primarily a trophy or decoration!

OOC: Damn, this game started moving! I need to check in more often.
I also now realize I had no description. :( I have one now though!

Four arrows come whistling through the air from the direction of the recently exited guard house.  Only Kedo has the where-with-all to intercept the incoming missiles--apparently intending to do so with his own body if his blades fail.

Once, twice, three times, then four, faster than the untrained eye--and most trained ones--can follow, Kedo's blades flash, intercepting every one of the deadly points.

Now, plain to see, four blue-clad bushi, armed with bows and spears rise from their hiding places along the guard house.

Roll initiative and post your actions
you're still two full rounds of movement away from the guard house and one full round of movement away from the alleys of the Courtier District.

The draw and the strike are one... but sometimes, just sometimes it helps to have blades already in hand... so that the eye can drop out of focus and the soul calm itself until the world seems to recede into the background of perception, a dream-like play of shadows from which it is the simplest of all things to choose a single movement from many and no harder to choose another... then another... and another.

For a moment it rains feathers, splinters and deadly metal points in an arc on either side of Kedo's stance, and then he surfaces from that meditative state once more, refreshed in spirit - and pleasantly surprised to find himself uninjured.

He seems in no hurry to rush to meet his foes however, rather holding his position and calmly speaking to his companions in the humble fashion of a simple Ronin addressing honourable clan Samurai, "Only four? - may I humbly ask that eyes look in every direction as we seek cover?"

 ---

04:18, Today: Kedo rolled 17 using 7d10, dropping the 4 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 2,1,6,7,2,1,4. Initiative.

I assume the enemy have the bows in hands and the spears over their shoulders or grounded nearby?

Either way, Kedo is moving with Sakura towards whatever protection she and the other Clanfolk decide upon, continuing to provide her with his own personal version of a goalkeeper defence system backed up by an ablative Bushi (get yours today kids!).

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Undaunted by their previous lack of success, the enemy draws back their hankyu and fire another volley--fully intending this one to be more successful than the last.

Initiative Order and current attack postures (feel free to post in whatever order you wish and correct any errors in my assumptions)
Daidoji Sakura 70 casting
Bayushi Kenshin 58 full attack posture (intended use of Yadomejutsu)
Kakita Ichiro 42 full attack posture (intended use of Yadomejutsu)
Moto Gyatso 30 full defense
Doji Sotan 24 full defense
Enemy 18 action taken
Kedo 17 full attack posture (intended use of Yadomejutsu)

Arrow Cutting TN:  32
Bow Strength:  1
If you are on full defense, you may move half your speed (Water Ring x10')

[Private to Bayushi Kenshin: sorry, they haven't revealed enough of their technique for you to identify them]
[Private to Daidoji Sakura: The air kami reveal hundreds of hidden things, most of them very small and a few very large; but only about ten of them are roughly human sized--in a city, expect lots of things to be deliberately hidden (coin, weapons, trysts, etc.]
[Private to Lin Ru-Fang: make a perception/investigation roll, the notice emphasis applies]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"Ichiro-Kun was always better at strategy" Kenshin said, drawing his blade, "but it seems to me that they are trying to herd us into the Courtier district."

"Tell me, Ronin-San" he continued in the polite-informal, "do you think you can hold the arrows off of our charges long enough for Ichiro-Sempai and myself to charge our foe?"

Clearly he had a plan -- foolhardy or otherwise.

[So, trying to clarify things in my mind here -- Yadomejutsu in Full Attack posture is an attack roll, i.e. Agility/Kenjutsu, right?]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

If one were to interrupt Kedo to ask him his opinion of the archers, then he would probably disagree entirely with their assessment... After all, each of them sought to place their arrows in a course that would end with the deaths of those at whom they shot. Had they been less able, less accurate then he would not have been able to meet them as they sped through the air.

It is their very success, their skill, their accuracy that lends itself to his own efforts.

But then, Kedo is to say the least, a very strange young man - and one who once more lets the world fade into unfocussed shadows as that trance overtakes him, curved steel rising in each hand to whirl through a single fluid pattern of heart-stopping grace and speed.

"Here I stand." Kedo's voice replies as though from a distance of a thousand miles, expressing the difficulty and simplicity of what he is doing with only a handful of words, "I may do no more."

 ---

 You rolled 47 using 8d10, dropping the 3 lowest rolls, rerolling max of 2, 5 & 5 ((5,5,(10+8)18,9,9,2,5,6)).

In reply to Bayushi Kenshin (msg #37):

OOC:  nope, it's an Agility/Defense roll--though you'll still get the full attack free raises--because a) you could do it with any weapon (though a sword is the most apt) and b) it's a Defense Emphasis; I may decide different later on, but we'll keep it that way for now

"Come, Ichiro-Kun! Please stay close, Satoru-San!"

And with that, Kenshin turned around and rushed towards the Courtier district -- Katana still in hand.

"Emergency! Everybody out of the way!" he shouted at the crowd, trusting that his friend as well as his charge would be right behind him.

Exactly what he had meant about charging the foe was a mystery ... for the moment.

Elsewhere...

Kanisai muttered darkly to himself as he looked at the scroll in his hands.  He had to deliver a message from Doji Kasarugi to the Court from the Crane hierarchy.  This was the job of runners, or courtiers.  Not trained samurai.  He frowned.  This must be some sort of punishment, for all the havoc that had occured.  It was honorable to be yojimbo to the Governor... but this still left a taste in his mouth.

"But" she said turning around, "I think the Scorpion has the right idea ... it'll be easier to handle a known enemy in close -- that doesn't know we know is there -- than one that can keep firing until it finally kills someone."

Sakura headed towards the Courtier district, knowing that Kedo would be right behind her.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Frustrated by their lack of success in piercing Kedo's veritable curtain of steel, the ambushing archers take more careful aim at their retreating targets.

OOC:  I'm assuming that you're all following Sakura at whatever rate your full defense will allow--except for Moto Gyatso who's casting and Kakita Ichiro who's keeping him safe--please let me know if I'm wrong ^_^

Full Defense does, in fact, allow you to move at half your normal rate of speed--unless you're a Shosuro Shinobi in which case it doesn't affect your speed at all ^_^

As Kenshin approaches one of the gaps between buildings of the Courtier district, he catches sight of two spearheads just before two bushi spring out to attack him.

Lin-Ru Fang also finds his way barred by a spear wielding bushi, though he's not immediately threatening.

Initiative Order and current attack postures (feel free to post in whatever order you wish and correct any errors in my assumptions)
Daidoji Sakura 70 attack posture (running towards courtier district)
Bayushi Kenshin 58 attack posture
Kakita Ichiro 42 full attack posture (intended use of Yadomejutsu)
Moto Gyatso 30 casting
Doji Sotan 24 full defense (moving towards Courtier District)
Enemy 18 action taken (focusing for ranged attack/sneak attacking Kenshin)
Kedo 17 full attack posture (intended use of Yadomejutsu/moving towards Courtier district)

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Step by step Kedo moves back with Sakura, the same sense of perception that allows his swords to be moving into the path of arrows that have not yet been loosed keeping him at a constant distance from his ward... The second volley of arrows meets the same fate as the first, perfectly aimed to pierce his flesh in order to slay the well-informed Shugenja, each faultless shaft is instead intercepted by swift-moving steel, the chiselled edge of blades over which he sweated and prayed in the forging meeting similarly swift-moving shafts and striking them from the air in a spray of wood fragments and feathers.

But he can only keep it up for so long, can only move so fast as his attention remains unfocussed and responsive, and that lack of focus, that moment of perfect unity in which his spirit moves through the void and his body simply follows... a mortal soul can sustain it for only so long.

But while it lasts it is so very beautiful...

A man might grow to love his killers, for the insight they offer with their sincerity and skill.

 ---

Assuming that I moved last round when Sakura did and do the same this round, that puts me one rounds (total) movement towards the courtier district, so if Kedo survives to the end of it, we should be free of further fire. For now.

22:53, Today: Kedo rolled 41 using 8d10, dropping the 3 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 8,7,9,9,8,5,3,5. One last effort, with void... .

Well, I might get one or two... but remember, I get no TN mods versus any that get through because I'm staying between the arrows and Sakura. Unless they're aiming at me now to get me out of the way, in which case I get my full defence. ^_^

Finishing his casting Gyatso's skin flickered for a moment, seeming to take on the tone of solid stone before fading from view. His preperations complete he glanced at the Kakita still by his side and shook his head. This was why he hadn't wanted a yojimbo. Anything he did could get this person killed too. With a nod to the man he began his own retreat towards the courtier district, keenly aware of the enemies still targeting them with bows. Ahead he could already see more foes gathering, and they already were assaulting the Scorpion. But not, he noticed, the trader. Unusual.

Kanisai tries to hide his impatience as he arrives in the Courtier district.  Hurrying to the young shugenja's residence, he treid not to snap at the attendants that he was there.  It was his duty to carry this out, which kept his feelings in check.  Now it only led to waiting for the courtier to arrive so he could deliver the message, and the duty would be fulfilled.  He sighed; hopefully with more successful jobs, the governor would trust him enough to send him on more important jobs.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Kenshin's swordplay was stylistic, but effective. "You should have chosen Seppuku" he said, firmly slicing into one of his opponents, "for where there is one Scorpion that knows a thing, there will always be another."

There were ears around, Kenshin was sure of that. It would do them good to realize that, sometimes, one could not win through victory.

[KtS: Harrier was 25. Hit (roll was 56), Damage was 58. Free raises were distributed as follows: 1 for to hit (bringing the TNtbH down to 26), 4 four damage (for +2k2).

Kenshin gets a total of five free raises in this case -- four for speed, one for skill. And that's without the Tides of Battle roll ...

If there are added raises for making it by way too much (not for combat, ne?), then put them towards "style". Hit location or that sort of thing.

Really, if he's still standing with that much damage, he deserves one more round.

17:38, Today: Bayushi Kenshin rolled 58 using 7d10+10, dropping the 3 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of (10+3)13,8,(10+8)18,8,9,3,3. Damage vs. Harrier.
17:36, Today: Bayushi Kenshin rolled 56 using 10d10+10, dropping the 6 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 8,1,2,7,9,7,8,4,(10+2)12,(10+7)17. To Hit  (using one raise).
17:35, Today: Bayushi Kenshin rolled 25 using 4d10, dropping the lowest dice only, rerolling max with rolls of 3,9,9,7. KtS: Daidoji Harrier.]

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The Lin family may be known for many things in their homeland. Cleverness, style, taste, bargaining, resourcefulness, knowing how to throw a party... but let it never be said that bravery or quickness to engage in combat is one of them.

His way barred by the spear wielding bushi, he draws back immediately, getting ready to dodge and run from the man should the man approach and try to attack him. However, it should be quite apparent that Ru-Fang is no real threat to the man and in order to engage the man's attention, Ru-Fang motions back towards Kenshin, Kedo and Ichiro-- the samurai who have not only drawn their swords, but are cutting down the ambushers at a rate that ought to startle anyone.

"You may wish to assist your friends," he suggests in his most friendly, corgeal and polite voice. He is quite certain that the battle-ready samurai would have no problem cutting down one more opponent between the three of them. In fact, he fully suspects that should the man before him have any sense of self-preservation, he'd run down rather than stick around and face certain death. Whichever the choice is, Ru-Fang puts up his friendliest front to be certain that attacking the outlandish merchant-ronin does not even enter the bushi's head as a valid option.

Kanisai is lead to the sitting room, with the scroll from Kasurugi in his hands.  Ducking to avoid some of the lower beams, he mutters to himself.  His grandfather's house was much larger in the beams to accommodate his Crab body size; it often made it difficult to transition to the traditional Crane size.  Avoiding hitting his head for now, he arrives in the sitting room.

With a bow to Daidoji Sayuri, Kanisai introduces himself.  "An apology for disturbing your day," he begins.  "I am Doji Kanisai, yojimbo for Doji Kasurugi.  He wishes your counsel on the use of the Daidoji harriers."  He offers the summons scroll to the shugenja.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The well ordered retreat led by Daidoji Sakura causes the archers to curse and fire hastily, but to no avail.  Their arrows, poorly aimed, fall far short of the the group's original position and even farther from their current path of retreat.  Unwilling to further expose themselves, the archers fade back into the shadows of the guard post.

Bayushi Kenshin's perfect strike cuts clean through the ambushing spearman, causing nearby civilians to take notice, scream, and flee, and providing a scant opening which the other spear wielder takes nearly immediate advantage.  The remaining ambusher takes a step back and stabs the Bayushi bushi even as he brings his weapon back into the guard position.

Doji Kanisai and Daidoji Sayuri immediately notice the increase in traffic coming from one of the palace courtyards, and it is only moment before they hear screams of "Murder!  Ninja!  Assassins!  Lion invasion!" ringing through the courtier district.

"You've been useful in the past, merchant," one of the ambushers blocking Lin Ru-fang snarls as his compatriot moves to attack the advancing samurai, "but do not interfere or you will find your usefulness at an end."

Five spear wielders emerge from the alleys of the courtier district.  One moves to flank Bayushi Kenshin, while the other four advance upon Daidoji Sakura, Doji Sotan, Kakita Ichiro, Moto Gyatso, Bayushi Kenji, and Kedo.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The spearman's strike was good, though not quite perfect. It was good enough to make Kenshin feel it, however ... almost -- but not quite -- good enough to put him down.

Almost.

Kenshin's second strike was not quite so perfect, but it was none-the-less one that the Sensei at the Kakita Academy would approve of. He had been taught to fight through the pain, and did so once again.

This time, though, it was for real.

Kenshin focused through the pain, and looked at the spearman who had penetrated his defenses so easily. Today, one of them would succeed.

The other would die.

"There is no failure ..." he said, slicing through his assailant.

Kenshin knew that there was one more to take care of. One more that, given the skill level of these warriors, would probably seal his fate.

'... only success or death.'

[Hit, Damage 47.

Called one raise on the strike; already have 5 free. +15 injury modifier; 10 taken care of by skill level. (Not that it actually mattered). Modified TNtbH is 35 (1 raise, +5 injurty). Hit. Using raises to add 3k3 to damage. Damage: 47. Free raises by excess roll (rolled 56, needed a 30) will be taken on style once again.

10:45, Today: Bayushi Kenshin rolled 47 using 8d10+10, dropping the 3 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of (10+5)15,6,2,3,4,7,5,4. Damage (6 raises).

With more enemies once more making their presence felt Gyatso continued toards the others, producing another scroll from his case as he advanced. This time sending his prayer up to the water kami with even more force than usual he brough forth a stave of water with some difficulty, the drain of invoking the kami's attention almost beyond him. However the prayer worked, and now armed he joined the others in an advance on the spearmen.

10:43, Today: Daidoji Sayuri rolled 40 using 7d10, dropping the 3 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 2,8,9,8,2,(10+5)15,6.)

There was a battle going on out in the district, that was clear, and Saiyuri carefully looked through the crowd of too-tall people to see what was happening. What was happening, apparently, was a general gang-attack by charging spearmen. Several charging spearmen, without any visible mon, attacking a band including a very lovely young woman of Sayuri's own family.

Sayuri looked to Kanisai. "We must help them, Doji-san!" she exclaimed. The voice of her tutors echoed in her mind, counseling her not to become involved in violence...and she promptly ignored it. Shugenja or not, she was Daidoji first and foremost, and Daidoji did not simply let their kin be attacked.

She quickly fumbled for a scroll. Pulling it out, she began to recite a prayer to the kami of Air, to soothe and weaken the minds of the five foes. She smiled as the kami answered; hopefully, those who had not yet engaged in combat would not be physically active enough, yet, to resist her siren call. If not, they would still be lulled and weakened.

(Void point spent for Asahina technique.
11:08, Today: Daidoji Sayuri rolled 42 using 9d10, dropping the 4 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 3,5,8,5,6,(10+2)12,1,8,8. Wind-Borne Slumbers, three Raises, TN 30.

Taking one free raise to add an additional target.

Five thugs, including Kenshin's flanker, affected. All roll -2 dice if currently involved in taxing physical activity; if not, they keel over and take a nap.)

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The attackers knew him personally? Well, Ru-Fang was hardly vein enough for that to not surprise him to some degree. Granted, he had done dealings with both the highest and the lowest in Rokugan and often served as a liason between two such groups, but he could not help but think that he did not recognize the agency from which these men hailed.

"Of course not!" he exclaimed somewhat defensively, as though the idea that he'd rush into battle thoughtlessly was somewhat offensive. "I must confess, I would not be certain on whose behalf I would intervene even if I were to do so."

However, this battle was not going well, too many sacrifices had been made already staining the floor and the reputation of the courtier district. Being too meddlesome to simply leave well enough alone he could not help but advise gently, "Would it not be better to identify yourselves rather than letting arrows and spears speak for you? Perhaps you would find others more cooperative and sympathetic to your cause."

That was a few more people than she was expecting, even with the knowledge that they were there. But, then again, even one was too many for the sneaky shugenja.

She always knew, of course, that her job had its hazards. That was one of the reasons that she had Kedo hired in the first place. Sakura decided that this was the perfect place, and the perfect time ... for a little deception.

"You see, Kedo-Kun" she said, just a touch too loud, "the traitors fell into our trap ..."

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The numbers are growing more reasonable now, with the arrival of a force of spearmen to prevent the groups escape, but even so, the appearance of the foe as Ashigaru-armed warriors is... wrong somehow.

Not more than a few hours ago, Kedo himself rose naked and unarmed from a bathtub to kill three well-armed and well-trained assassins, wound a fourth and capture a fifth in something like ten to twelve seconds of bloody carnage. Some of his companions have demonstrated similar own skills (if not quite so spectacularly) in their own fields... Were he to seek the death of one stood amongst them, the only prudent course would be to drown them in bodies.

This thought trails through his mind as his body moves smoothly to face each new threat, rotating around Sakura the moment she's out of the direct line of fire of the archers in order to intercept her share of whatever spear-armed foe heads towards her, though he makes no effort to charge them down.

 ---

I go after the Ashigaru because of a low Initiative roll, but there are all kinds of heroes with high dice pools to go first. Let me know what comes through the mincing machine to stab me and if I survive, I'll thump it. ^_^

Kenshin's second attack is as effective as his first, and his second enemy falls in a shower of blood.

The spearmen moving to attack the armed samurai stumble for a moment, as if the ashigaru armor that they are wearing under their blue yukata is suddenly too heavy for them.  Reconsidering their rash action, the armored spear wielding soldiers slow their advance and take a defensive stance.

The one threatening Lin Ru-Fang exhales heavily mid-sentence and collapses into unconsciousness.

Initiative Order and current attack postures (feel free to post in whatever order you wish and correct any errors in my assumptions)
Daidoji Sakura 70 attack posture
Bayushi Kenshin 58 attack posture
Kakita Ichiro 42 attack posture
Daidoji Sayuri 40 attack posture
Doji Kanisai 31 attack posture
Moto Gyatso 30 attack posture
Doji Sotan 24 attack posture
Enemy 18 action taken (full defense)
Kedo 17 attack posture

Enemy TNtbH:  31/64

You all act first (except for Kedo ^_^) so you get to hit them before they manage to put up their defenses.  All 6 of the enemies are within striking distance.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Well, to be completely honest this wasn't the first time a Rokugani had fallen asleep on him in the middle of one of his talks-- although his suggestions had hardly seemed long or dull enough to have caused this effect. And what was it with the uncanny Rokugani ability to fall asleep in the strangest of places? On floors, sitting at tables, standing at court, in the streets, in booths at the manga store, on the train... wait, scratch those last two. The point is-- the guard was just being rude.

Well, not being one to fail to seize the advantage when it presented itself, Ru-Fang bent down as though checking on the ashigaru for injuries. At least he did his absolute best to look concerned and trying his best to help, but really his goal was to get that spear out of the man's reach while checking him over for identification or other clues as to who he is or who he might be working for. Again, he doesn't do this blatantly or lightly, having no intention of harming or disturbing the man more than necessary-- should the man awaken it should appear as though he is just being checked out to see why he suddenly collapsed.

"Be wary, Ichiro-Kun!" Kenshin said, turning to face his sole remaining attacker. "These are not Ashigaru -- they are Samurai, trained among the Elite Daidoji Irregulars*!"

The blood was still flowing from his wound, but even with his injuries he would not allow himself to accidentally insult his friends clan. He did not say that these were Crane.

He would let another make that announcement.

Blood still flowing from his wound, Kenshin struck at his final attacker.

[Or however one would say "Harriers".

The strike is blind, so I didn't know where to assign the raises (5 free). Because I didn't know where to assign the raises, I couldn't roll damage.

He has a +5 penalty for wounds; if, by some miracle, he gets more raises based on his roll they'll be assigned to style. Whatever of his "normal" raises he doesn't use to hit he'll use on damage.

20:47, Today: Bayushi Kenshin rolled 45 using 10d10+10, dropping the 6 lowest rolls, rerolling max with rolls of 8,2,3,3,3,(10+4)14,5,3,6,7. To Hit (Blind). ]

Meanwhile, the two groups of bushi face each other--neither side willing to make the first move.  The tableau is broken, however, when Moto Gyatso lashes out with the bo offered to him by the kami.  The watery staff strikes the lead spear wielder square in the face, breaking his nose and knocking him back a few paces.  Silence reigns for a moment as the bushi raises his hand disbelieving to his now bleeding nose.  Eyes narrowing, he looks at Moto Gyatso.  "Kill them," he commands, and then the battle begins in earnest.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

To someone raised to follow the disciplined and painstakingly formulated schools of the Crane it's easy to underestimate Kedo's stance, a relaxed posture with both swords held lightly in hands that are positioned at his sides, feet spread just enough for undemonstrative balance without compromising his ability move.

And then at the moment of decision he's swaying to the side as the two 'Ashigaru' move towards him with perfectly coordinated technique, one attempting to engage his blade and prevent him from responding whilst the other lunges past to assault Sakura.

Unfortunately, while their technique is perfect Kedo's is not, but rather is formulated in the moment, time becoming no-time in accordance with Miromoto's teachings as he moves. The spear-thrust of the first simply passes through empty air just under his left arm whilst the second is elegently deflected by an extension of his katana, lifting it up a hand-span or so at the midpoint of its journey in a way that generates just enough of a shift for the wickedly sharp point to pass through empty air just over Sakuras head.

And then, without a change in the unearthly, centered calm of his expression he moves from defence to offence... Twice his katana moves as he rotates his body along the line of the spear aimed at himself, once coming in at neck-height from behind his foe, then spinning one in hand and lancing backwards and up towards the ribs in an unexpected thrust while his body continues to turn.

Without a wasted motion or a loss of timing, Kedo draws the bloodied sword-tip from the flesh of the 'Crane' and sweeps it around in a powerful arc underneath the second warriors spear where it's deflected by a mere hand's-breadth as the more than merely competent opponent knocks it aside where it describes a short, exquisite arc and lashes across the warriors arm, no energy wasted as the simple, gray-clad Ronin substitutes fluidity for the sheer, uncompromising reflex speed of his Kakita-trained companions.

 And blood flows in response.

 ---

Okay, going from 'Defence' to 'Attack' on my initiative, then taking two attacks on the guy who went for me. I put both free raises to offsetting an extra attack, leaving me needing to hit 41.

 I get a 53 and an 83, for 18 & 23 damage respectively on target 1.

Two attacks on the second guy (the one who went for Sakura), same pattern. The dice give me a 40 and a 56, resulting in a miss (gasp!) plus one hit that does a mere 12 points

If the first guy is taken down from his 42 damage, then I get an additional attack (go go Miromoto!) and that's (obviously) directed at dude #2. It hits (with raises for damage) on a 47 and does 48 points of damage. Man down at that point I think. I really hope I knocked out the first guy. ^_^

Oh, and my TBHN drops like a rock from 63 to 38.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

After disarming his 'opponent' and otherwise letting the man slumber and rest peacefully, finding no reason to disturb him and no honor nor good to be found in murdering a helpless man, the merchant rises slowly to his feet using the spear as a crutch to get back up.

Taking a few steps from the slumbering soldier and looking to those he had recently met, still engaged in battle and seemingly intent on beheading each and every one of the attackers, he called out as though hoping to end the violence, "Aren't these men from the neutral city?" He hoped that by bringing attention to this that the others might notice the insigia of Toshi Ranbo inscribed upon the armor of the ashigaru.

He couldn't really be sure what it all meant-- he knew that Toshi Ranbo was a tradepost between the Crane the Lion that often found itself in dispute over ruleship. But what would soldiers from there be doing here attacking those the Miya had assigned him to supply?

The deeper the merchant found himself embroiled in Rokugani politics, the more insane and barbaric he was finding himself believing the Rokugani people really were. Yet, he was still making a sizable profit here, as long as he could survive it might all be worth the trouble.

With the left flank now solidly decimated, Kenshin decided that now was the time for the psychological advantage. One good strike -- at the right time and in the right place -- and the assailants might be convinced to withdraw.

The edge of Kedo's sword runs up the arm of the second attacker even as the first begins to crumple, the momentary gap that the death creates in the defenses of the second all that's needed for the length of silvered steel to extend, reverse and strike once more - this time with sufficient momentum and speed for the spearman's head to leap from his body.

Both men hit the ground within a heartbeat of one another as Kedo unconsciously flicks blood from his sword and resumes his defensive stance in front of Sakura, obviously prepared to repeat the terrifying six-tenths-of-a-second-or-so of furious action if another threat materialises.

Well... at least it's obvious that there's a reason Sakura's been happy to have a Ronin bodyguard so far.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Sakura looked around, finally "standing down" from her posture. She had learned to commune with the Kami from an early age, but she had never considered battle as an essential part of that until recently.

Unfortunately she hadn't had a chance to fix that yet.

Sakura looked around, taking in the sights. There was no question in her mind -- these were Harriers that attacked them -- but Sakura would not say so in public. Or, at least, not in so public an area. She looked then looked at Sayuri, an odd look in her eyes. The Daidoji were in grave danger, here and throughout the Empire. Still, one had gotten away. This was, as far as Sakura was concerned, a good thing.

"Yes" she replied, "but not in public."

"And thank you for your assistance."

Sakura considered the sleeping samurai for a long moment.

"Disarm him and bring him with us" she requested of those present. She then turned her attentions to the Monk momentarily before examining the wounded.

"Sotan-San" she said, her voice just a little low, "I believe you had something you wished to tell me?"

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

With the dried blood from his previous life-or-death struggle in the Crane bath-house now augmented by a line of crimson arterial spray across his right side, Kedo presents a rather alarming visage as he flows back into a casual stance alongside Sakura, studiously unthreatening in form and manner.

Well, if you discount the corpses of two extremely well-trained Bushi lying not far from his feet that is.

The oncoming group is offered a polite and slightly apologetic nod of the head, as though the obviously Dragon-trained Ronin regrets not being able to abase himself properly before true Clan samurai and is hopeful of their understanding.

 Otherwise, he remains quite silent.

 ---

Well, Kedo was uninjured in this fight - he just has the 15 untreated wounds he's been wandering around with from the bath house fight earlier today. ^_^

Kenshin flicked the blood off of his Katana then, after wiping it properly, resheathed the sacred blade with all of the formality of a Crane duelist. At the newly arriving Daidoji's question, he bowed to her but kept his silence.

He also had no idea what was going on here, but there were many questions. Why would Daidoji Irregulars be attacking one of their own Shugenja?

Bayushi Kenshin stepped by his charge and waited.

Wiping a notable amount of blood from his mouth Gyatso nodded his gratitude as Sakura appeared beside him. Clearly recognising a prayer he himself had uttered many a time he settled back to the floor in relief, although it was clear that her efforts had done little to recover his wounds.
Then the newcomer started clapping.
Rising from his posture Gyatso just barely stopped himself from actually shouting but the gritted teeth he spoke throughh made his irritation clear to anyone. "You're applauding us. For killing people? What an interesting perspective of death you seem to have. Most other Crane I've met, actually most samurai for that matter, would have viewed this sort of matter as one to be shocked by and avoided. Well, good to hear you enjoyed the performance." Settling back as his wound fountained a fresh surge of blood Gyatso muttered a brief curse and yanked some cloth loose from his belt, binding the wound as best he could.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"It is worse than that, Doji-San" Sakura said in a hushed tone, "the testimony of nearly every Crane Samurai in the city must also be dismissed in a court of law."

She pardoned herself for a moment while her song called upon the Kami to aid her Yojimbo. It was not much, but it was the least she could do. Hopefully the other Priests of the Kami would be able to assist as well.

She looked for a moment at her "fellow Daidoji". This was something that would be problematic at best. How much should she say here? How much should she keep for the courts.

And just how much was Daidoji Ryu involved in all of this? That he knew was unquestionable ... but was he tainted, or merely following orders out of loyalty?

"But it is, none-the-less, invaluable information ... just as I have come to expect from the Dragon. It will help me tremendously. Please tell them that they have my gratitude, both for myself and for Lord Kuwanan."

The latter was for the benefit of her "sister Daidoji" more than anything.

"Daidoji-San" Sakura said to the other Shugenja, looking at the sleeping Harrier. "Thank you for your assistance in this matter. I'm afraid, however, that I must request that you accompany us to the Governor's palace where we must make a report. There I hope to be able to tell you what this is all about ..."

Of course, there was still the matter of what to do with the sleeping Harrier ...

But I am certain I would enjoy all of your company on the way there. Especially yours, Daidoji-san." Her voice was sweet and lilting, and the tone of the last honorific indicated that Sayuri was clearly far more used to addressing people as "chan."

She then smiled over at Kanisai. "Doji-san, could you tie the captive up and carry him for us?"

Ru-Fang seemed to have disappeared into the background, what with no one particularly heeding his words. He took a quick glance back to the sleeping and disarmed man who had tried to keep him at bay earlier before suddenly falling into a strange unnatural slumber with a solemn look on his face.

"Well, maybe my friend here might be able to answer a few questions for us. I really wish we could sit down and talk rather than always resorting to violence..." his tone was clearly distasteful. Whereever he was from, it was clear that he was used to things being dealt with economically-- cutting a deal, making a comprimise and sealing with a handshake. Matters of dispute ought to be handled by what's most fair under the law and best for the society-- not who swings a sword the fastest, "What is it with the people of this land always chopping each other apart at first opportunity?" he grumbles scornfully. Something about the courtyard being covered in blood, the dead bodies litering the ground, the spirits of the men cut down in battle hovering in the air... no doubt invisibly glaring daggers and tossing curses as those who had cut their young lives so short... whether his accompanied party was in the right or wrong, this seemed like a tragic waste of life.

"Then again, perhaps we'd best move in case those archers have not be dissuaded," oh, yes, he hadn't forgotten about the first volley of the attack upon them. He'd hoped that the archers would not be fool-hardy enough to begin launching arrows into such a place-- but those who were not involved in the dispute were quickly clearing out which meant the chance of striking a non-target may have dropped enough for the archers to take a chance.

"Yes" Sakura replied, politely ignoring Lin Ru-Fang's outburst, "it would be ... prudent for us to proceed to the Governor as quickly as possible."

There was but one question on her mind -- was Daidoji Ryu a "loyal lackey", or an "evil mastermind"?

"We have plenty of information now -- "evidence" I believe the Dragon call it -- but no admissible testimony."

She then looked at the sleeping Harrier once again.

"See to it that he is properly shackled*" she finally announced, "then waken him. We will bring him with us to the Governor's court."

She waited only long enough for her commands to be carried out before moving out.

Well roll the blasted die then Sakura. Oh, and your TN is -5 if you like. ^_^

 ---

With things taking something of a diplomatic rather than a martial, philosophical, religious, tactical or crafting course Kedo remains quietly impassive, accepting the short prayer from his ward in a stoic but nonetheless grateful fashion as he voluntarily reaches into that place where his connection to the elements is felt most strongly and eases the course of the enchantment, just as he was taught as a young man.

That done he stoops slightly to respectfully wipe the edge of his swords on the nearest piece of unstained cloth and sheathes them by turns, relaxing as he rises until only the ghastly patterning of fresh and dried gore across his leanly muscular frame gives any evidence of his having killed more men in this one day than in his entire life to this point.

Later, when there is time he will no doubt be visiting a shrine - but for the moment, there is duty to be performed, until such time as he can hand Sakura back to her family once more.

The bathhouse is now a bustle of activity.  Water bearers rushing in and out carrying buckets in various states of emptiness and blessings both; bushi methodically examining each and every visitor; shugenja and monks systematically cleansing and blessing every square inch; and over it all, hangs a new bathhouse sign:  'The Ronin's Rescue'

"With all the blessing and cleansing going on here, this place is starting to look like a shrine..." a passerby muses, staring at the mass of people.

"Now that's not a bad idea..."

"What?  A cleaning and a blessing, all in one?"

"Why not?"
Kedo hears before they pass out of earshot.

When Kedo approaches the door, one of the guards stops him.

"Come for a bath, eh, Ronin?" he says gruffly, gesturing at a nearly full sword rack, "you'll have to leave your weapons here.  Try not to make as much of a mess as the last one who came in here.  A veritable bloodbath that was," the bushi guffaws at his own joke, "go on, and get a blessing from the shugenja while you're at it, it looks like you could use one."

The expression upon Kedo's face when he catches sight of the new sign can only be described as pained - not offended or upset, but simply ill at ease with the change in circumstance that the establishment has undergone. On the other hand it seems unlikely he'll be recognised while dressed (it's remarkable how few people can describe the face of a naked tattooed swordsman who lands in the middle of their bath).

Still he reasons, if any establishment in the city not actively paronised by the Tessen is likely to welcome a humble Ronin it's this one and he smoothly advances upon the guard, offering a respectful bow and a rueful, "These are troubled times (insert mon-appropriate name here)-san, but I shall make an effort to draw nothing but hot water and spill nothing but soap." as he stoops to gracefully unhook both plain-hilted yet exquisitely balanced swords from his hip and lay them on the lowest of the available pegs of the sword rack before rising and making to move inside, hoping with every fibre of his being that there might also be a laundry service available for todays busy wave-man on the go.

The other patrons within give Kedo a wide berth--either recognizing him from his growing reputation or wishing to stay far away from any formidable looking samurai.  But one fussy little Asahina shugenja bars his way.

"No, no, no!" he splutters looking at Kedo's blood stained form, "I will not have this!  I will not have hours of blessing and purification undone by some bleeding ronin!  Come over here, you!" he snarls--really, it comes out as more of a squeak from his high pitched voice--as he reaches up, grabbing Kedo by the ear and dragging him towards a clear area.

Several of his fellows, eying the ronin nervously, tug desperately on his sleeves, trying to get his attention.  "Makuro-sama," they hiss, "this is..."

"I don't care who he is," Asahina Makuro snaps, letting go of Kedo's ear, "he is not going to bleed all over this place...now where did I put that scroll..." he mutters, patting his clothes absently.

There are many things that might happen when an undisciplined soul violates the personal space of a skilled Bushi - the gesture is offensive enough to Rokugani culture to justify a range of responses from a challenge to the simple gripping of the wrist and twisting it just so in order to drive the interloper to his or her knees in eye-watering agony...

...fortunately for the Asahina (and if it should come to that, for Kedo himself who is feeling rather less impressive than he apparently looks) the ronin in question is rather self-effacing for one of his ilk, and beyond swaying gently to prevent Makuro-sama from demeaning himself through personal contact with a blood-stained warrior, he follows meekly enough after a smooth and respectful bow.

All of which presumably means that the Shugenja in question not only finds his scroll, but turns and offers its power to the Ronin stood nearby with a quizical expression on his face and the ability to make it really quite a bit easier or harder to successfully influence the Kami to affect him.

But presuming it does, Kedo walks out of the curious meeting with a rather puzzled expression and promptly heads for the water where - not more than a few hours before - he was lounging in tattooed luxury, enjoying the first good soak he'd had in some weeks only to be interrupted by a sudden and unexpected attack of Ninjas.

Well, people dressed a bit like Ninjas, which is a very different things.

Almost immediately he sets to getting truly, deeply clean once again, washing away both blood and the psychosomatic itch that the blood left in its wake, scrubbing off sweat and oil and grime... letting himself truly and delightfully purge the affairs of the day in hot water and scented soap, barely even seeming to be aware of the others present or the exotic figure he cuts in his nearly all-covering webwork of intricate lessons from the Tao.

He wasn't dozing, no sir. Those eyelids were half-closed because he was... trying to get a better judge of the colour patterns on the partition wall, yes indeed (though he has a perfect right to be, what with having fought two lethal battles and manipulated several instances of city politics on around three hours sleep - which itself was brought about by his spending most of last night hunkered down with Daidoji tacticians helping to plan the defence of the city).

Jerking upright smoothly, the tattooed ronin (though just at the moment, devoid of his simple clothing, he could readily be mistaken for a member of a certain great clan) straightens and offers a polite nod of the head to the newcomer, "Tsutomu-san grants me more honour than I deserve - it was a great privilage to be permitted to debate with him." he replies automatically, though with nothing less than complete sincerity before actually looking at the young man in question and smiling slightly, "I had that pleasure, yes - she plays a most intriguing Game." he murmurs in subtle, but not untruthful flattery.

"Had I realised that the great-grandchildren of the man who wrote 'On the techniques of Craftsmen' were in the city however, it would not have taken chance to bring me to your door - I have long stood impressed by your families insight into the way of Steel."

The use of the word 'were' brings a sorrowful expression to Kedo's features, the whipcord-lean onetime Dragon promptly lowering his head for a moment, "I offer my condolences for your families loss." he states with genuine feeling, holding the position for several heartbeasts before raising his gaze once more and allowing his eyes to widen in surprise, "I do not consider myself worthy to touch the sleeve of Kaiu Kuromori, let alone to be an heir to his work." he protests sincerely, but his eyes grow if anything even wider when the Kuromori steel is raised from the water.

Looking upon it, his first reaction is to express dismay that the Daidoji would bring it into the water, but his words quickly allay those fears and a moment later Kedo is contemplating the possibilities... "Pride indeed, though I do not understand where shame would fall in the blending of such a thing, unless he strove to find a way to harden it and failed?"

Kedo's relief when the good health of the youth's father is confirmed is visible, and though it's also plain that he desires to speak to the man, he's visibly loathe to presume so upon such a new relationship, "Any error was mine, I assure you." he murmurs before addressing the new information with visible sobriety.

"The taint permeates all things in the Shadowlands, or so I am told - filtering into even the purest of materials through their link to the elements." - as he speaks, the little wheels in the back of his mind are steadily turning over what little he knows of the taint - "There are those amongst the Dragon who have done more than any other to study the nature of materials, metals amongst them. And those amongst the Kuni who know more of the taint than any not lost. Perhaps the the knowledge that will see his dream fulfilled exists, and need only be brought together?"

There's a touch of hope in the youthful Ronin's tones, an optimism that given sufficient time and insight, all things may truly become possible.

A warm laugh follows Yukito's reply, the Ronin wanderer appreciating the humour that is a pleasant relief from a day of blood and danger, even if the young Crane's question brings a wry and rueful smile in its wake, "I have seen something of the city walls and something of its market - I have been privilaged to enter the high chambers of the fortress and speak with some few officers of note. Beyond that, I have seen almost nothing of a city spoken of in story and celebrated in song." he admits.

Rolling to one side and then smoothly to his feet in the water he reaches for the nearest soap and starts to vigorously scrub, obviously intending to finish with the hot pool and head for the cold before seeing whether or not the laundry-boy has finished with his alarmingly battered and bloodstained clothing.

"I would enjoy the performance, but I am afraid that I would be in poor condition to appreciate it." the graceful Ronin replies as he draws on his clothing once more, obviously grateful past words for the chance to feel clean cloth against fresh-scrubed skin, though now that he's properly washed it becomes possible to appreciate the deep shadows under his eyes that are the direct result of having spent half the night sitting up with Daidoji officers planning the defence of the city.

Which, it is probably safe to say, he's not mentioning out loud.

 To anyone.

But then again... it's a bunraku performance (the thought can almost be seen to be chasing itself across the surface of the tired Ronin's mind) and it's one being held in a Crane city, which means that the performers will be of the very best...

Temptation is something that the Dragon are no more immune to than anyone else, it's just that they are prey to different impulses than most, and so after a few moments Kedo relents and shakes his head wryly, "But it has been too long since I have been able to enjoy such a performance. Very well, submission to such a temptation may not win the approval of those who taught me, but I suspect it would win their smiles."

"Excellent," Daidoji Yukito replies, "I arranged to have the evening meal at the performance, but there's always so much food that we invariably let much of it go to waste."

Yukito leads you to a small but crowded theatre in the courtier's district.  There you join his sister, Daidoji Tomoe, and a few other Crane--though no others from the Daidoji family.  One or two look askance at the inclusion of a ronin--albeit one whose reputation is growing within the city and who is significantly less...scruffy than the common ronin's reputation would imply.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

Armed once more, and as a result walking with the smooth and balanced gait that's once more that of a person no longer moving around with the equivalent of a missing limb Kedo contentedly accompanies his Daidoji companion through the city, takin the opportunity along the route to converse quietly - if perhaps a touch inelegently by Crane standards (since for all his undoubted accomplishment he is no courtier) on a range of topics as they arise, from past Bunraku performances he's seen (none with the expected level of skill here behind the puppets of course) to philosophy when the parallels between puppets and men inevitably arise.

He's of course quite glad to see Daidoji Tomoe once more and offers the youn lady a suitably respectful bow before accompanying the two into the theatre, fielding the askance looks with near-perfect humility that lacks nothing of undramatic abasement before the higher station of those through whom he moves.

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

The theatre darkens as shades are pulled over the candles and the shadows of the puppets loom large.  While the shadows dance on on the stage, servers pace the tables offering various forms of finger food.  Once the first group of servers pass, Daidoji Yukito leans foreward to speak quietly.

"Some of us were wondering," he says, "if you would be participating in the coming battle with the Lion?"

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"I was asked whether I would be available for... employment by both Daidoji Ryu-san and Doji Kasarugi." Kedo answers in a soft voice, his tone characteristically apologetic, as though to underline the fact that he s simply answering a question rather than trying to play the Name Game, "In each case I was compelled to decline, but I have found hospitality in this city. My feet have been cleansed of the dust of the road and my needs met."

"In the mountains, a guest is expected to stand beside his host should a foe approach." he goes on slightly, his expression unreadable in the darkness and his eyes upon the performance, "And one who has walked in them carries them always at his back. Should the Lion come to the gates of Toshi Ranbo, I have some small hope that some few of them will remember my name before they are permitted to depart."

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"That is most welcome news," Daidoji Tomoe smiles serenely, "as Tsutomu-sensei is rather occupied with his new duties as a yojimbo, some of us," she says, looking briefly at Doji Suou and Kakita Rokutunda--the two rudest of her companions, "were wondering if you would consent to join us in our training--and, perhaps join us in giving the Lion a...warm welcome."

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"I had wondered at Tsutomu-sensei's new duties and who was taking them up in his absence." admits Kedo softly, and hoping perhaps that the natural realisation that he could only have been aware of those new duties had he been in the presence of the lord of the city will not occur to anyone, before turning his head slightly so that even in the shadowed theatre his expression can be seen by his companions... untroubled by rudeness to a mere Ronin and indeed, intrigued by the possibilities of allies at his side in battle.

"I have... reason to believe that the defence of the city may call for small, mobile groups of Bushi working together." he admits in a voice that barely carries past his immediate neighbours and most definitely not going further in a place where he does not know every ear that listens, "I would be honoured to be a small part of one such group."

"Tsutomu-sensei mentioned that your approach to dealing with the enemy would be...unconventional," Daidoji Tomoe replies with approval.

"Bah!" Kakita Rokutunda grumbles, "strategy and tactics are all well and good, but no plan survives contact with the enemy.  I'll believe in you when I see you on the field of battle."

Re: Chapter 6 - Loose Threads

"There is much truth in this." Kedo agrees as Rokutunda expresses the old saw that generations of strategists and tacticians have come up against like a brick wall, "And so it seems to me that the secret - if there is such a thing - is to have not one plan graven in stone to encompass all possiblities, but rather to determine the principles upon which a battle will be fought and to ensure that those principles are well understood by the men and women who will carry them out."

"As for belief..." the simple Ronin replies, parting his hands once again, a gesture of humility that he's grown particularly used to making since his arrival in the city, "If the Fortunes grant, that will not be necessary - by the time an attack occurs, I shall have had the honour of training with you, and we shall know something of one anothers technique. Come the foe, our blades shall strike as one."
