While Hajime would enjoy the chat, I think he did have a few things he would have tried to do first before coming back to observe the Iaijutsu training:

1) Hajime wants to meet 2 samurai, Asahina Byako (Shishako's associate who asked her to make the request of Hajime) and Shiba (Asako) Ikaji who wants to speak to Hajime about the Emerald Magistrateship.

2) In general, as the Imperial representative to the tournament, Hajime will mix & mingle and try to check in on each of the Minor Clans who are hosting an event to make sure they are well ("show the flag" as it were, display the Emperor's interest & concern for the Minor Clans).

Now #2 is just a general thing, so that could take place at no particular time.  #1 is something Hajime would likely want to take care of first if possible (i.e. if Byako and/or Ikaji were available).

Speaking of Shiba (Asako) Ikagi... is this a different person from the Isawa Ikaji mentioned in the Training IC thread?

It sounds like Kenshin had some things to do before getting to the Training, so perhaps Hajime was able to wrap up the meetings in objective #1 and then arrive in time for the training to begin?

@Hajime - I think that Ikaji and Shema (and Sitatsu?) all were the same player.  Given that he begged out/retired I think the second part of part #1 may be obsolete.

I'm going to have a hard time not referring to Kedo as Bono.  His high glory, and with his documentary crew following him about telling of his great deeds?  Somehow I got the image stuck in my head.  All that's missing are the sunglasses. ^_^

Just to point out; you may have been thinking of Heimin (the caste of farmers, merchants, etc) as being cared for. Hinin are definitely something to be avoided; the caste of undertakers (eta) and other untouchable/unclean folks, and they aren't even protected by the Emperor’s justice. Unless Shoji is remarkably open minded. :)

Hey y'all, I've been fighting off a cold for the last couple days, but today I admit defeat.  Posting will be spotty(er) for the next few days.  Sorry, hopefully I'll be back next week at full strength.

Sorry, I'm having trouble connecting with this scene. Probably because I feel like a fraud (I know, it's just role-playing) having only and hour or so of formal training -- and that in Battojutsu rather than formal Iai.

No worries, I'm supposed to be moving things along soon anyway ^_^ there are a couple of things that need resolution (on my end) so I'll try to get the first test started tomorrow

I have no objection to just ending the scene!  Shoji has plenty to think about after a first lesson.

Question: Would these competition skill checks (for instance Jiujitsu) be considered "attacks" for the purpose of applying School Techniques?

My instinct says no, but I'm willing to be convinced by sufficient justification
