Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

"Well, Tsuruchi-san, Yoritomo Akuto says, "we have the beginnings of an agreement with the Crane, but now we need to get our associates among the Minor Clans to agree with us.  With the Mantis newly minted as a Great Clan, few of the Minor Clans trust Yoritomo-sama to continue to act in their best interests--not that many of them did so in the first place," the seasoned Mantis courtier grins, "now, we--really you--need to convince them that this deal with the Crane is in their best interests, rather than simply in the interest of the Mantis."

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

Sumi nodded as she began to speak. "Hai, Yoritomo-sama. Convincing them will be most important. However, are we ourselves convinced that we are getting exactly what we sought and that the Crane are not simply maneuvering? More importantly, is this deal benefiting the Mantis more than the Minor clans? If so, some demonstration of the Mantis' loyalty to the minor clan's well being may be in order."

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

"Oh yes," Yoritomo Akuto smiles, "for a small application of force and soldiers we establish our place among the ranks of the Great Clans and place the entirety of the Minor Clans in our debt.

"What kind of demonstration were you thinking of?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

"Something to demonstrate the altruistic nature of what you do for them. They must never think that you are doing it to place them in your debt. It is fine if they realize it is happening, but they will resent you if they think you are doing it for exactly that reason. You must be seen to have other motives, or rather be seen to have a selfless desire to improve their standing. If this is shown to them you will have not only them indebted to you, but you will have their loyalty and their desire to see you succeed."

"The question is, what could you do to demonstrate this to them?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

"Perhaps we might offer to host and provide the reward for a tournament among the Minor Clans," Yoritomo Akuto replies after a moment of thought, "that would provide them a forum to showcase their skills without being overshadowed by the Great Clans, and by taking the burden of the cost we cannot be accused of doing so for our own profit.

"Do you have other ideas?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

Sumi considered the problem silently for a moment and then nodded her head. "Hai, Yoritomo-sama, I think I do. That is a good idea. Host the tournament between them, then perhaps offer a boon to the winner, something to be named by them, or if they have a problem that our new position or status can assist with, use it on their behalf."

"Excellent," Akuto smiles, "have you decided who you will proposition first in this matter?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

The rooms assigned to the Sparrow are simple, as befitting the small and humble clan, but of high quality, as befitting their shared ancestry with the Crane Clan.  The Sparrow welcome you cordially and offer you tea and conversation.

"So Tsuruchi-san," Suzume Kirika, one of the Sparrow sub-functionaries asks as you sip your tea, "are you here on behalf of the Mantis?  or have the Wasp tired of playing second biwa to Yoritomo's ambition?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

Sumi smiled pleasantly as she sat down her temporarily cup to speak. "I would not pressume to know the feelings of all my family. However, Suzume-san, I am certain that they all understand that even the greatest performers rely on assistance to create their art."

"I am here on behalf of a cause that I believe in. One that I also believe would benefit your clan."

"Very well then, the Wasp have always been good allies to the Sparrow," Suzume Kirika acknowledges, "and have never betrayed our trust.  So what word does your Clan bring to the Sparrow?"

Re: Chapter 7 - Minor Complications

"I bring word of a tournament being held by the Mantis in celebration of their new position and so that the minor clans can showcase their skills. The winner will be granted a the boon of a request to be fulfilled." Sumi explained politely, studying Suzume Kirika's expression carefully for a reaction.
