The Danger Grows
Maddock hustles forward to collect the prisoner, leaving Snow in charge of the boat. As the burly RM moves to help the prisoner to his feet, the young man becomes agitated (although not aggressive) and refuses to budge, leaning back until he's almost lying flat on his back and doing his best to become dead weight. Almost frantically, the Soviet soldier again addresses those assembled in sloppy Polish. You listen carefully, trying to piece together a coherent thread from what, to your untrained ears, sounds mostly like gibberish.
"Red army... camping in town... bandits come... we ambush... they return... have tanks... we retreat... see your boat... twenty men... please help us... they are coming with tanks... kill everyone... take your boat... hurry... please... waiting...".
In the distance, the firing continues. It's growing louder and more urgent. Looking up you can see black smoke rising over the warehouse.
On board the Krolowa, you can see the smoke too. The tug begins to shudder as the powerful winch removes the slack from the anchor. The pitch of the winch engine rises until, with a satisfying lurch, the tug pulls itself free from the sucking mud. The Krolowa's engine reawakens and the old tug begins backing to a safe distance from the mudbank. Walter and Tadeuz manouver to recover the pick anchor and complete the operation.
On the bridge rood, Gunny whispers to Konrad, "There's a man on the roof [of the warehouse]..."
Meanwhile, Yazzie stealthily makes his way towards the town.
[Private to John Yazzie: You inch your way forward through the sparse growth stretching inland from the shore. After crossing about 100 meters, the concealment ends but you've gone far enough. Fifty meters ahead and to your right (SE), rifle fire eminates from a large, run-down administrative building. Part of the building is burning fiercely. Fifty meters beyond that you see a green and brown mottled metal box on tracks, firing into the defended building with its coax. It's a BMP-2. Several dismounts follow literally in its tracks. Another BMP can be seen through the smoke beyond the first. It seems to be manovering to flank the defenders. Yet another AFV waits in the distance, 100 meters to the south. It's hard to identify due to all of the smoke and the random pieces of equipment that appear to be strapped haphazardly to its turret, but it looks like a T-72...]
