The Inspectors (0735 hrs.)
Chopper and Stan manage to ride, push, and pull the bike* the remaining 300 meters to the west bank of the Vistula across from Tarnobrzeg. The riverbank is bordered here by a 2-5m high berm of scree- debris scraped up and dumped alongside the river by the regular pre-war dredging- which, aside from obstructing their direct, ground-level line-of-sight to the town, offers them both cover and concealment. The river here is approximately 500m wide, but the lack of routine maintainance over the last five years has reduced the navigable channel to a mere 200m extending from along the east bank, directly bordering the edge of the town proper. It will be a long, indirect shot to the far bank- should it come to that- but well within the range of the Mk-19, and in the lee of the scree berm as well.
On board the Visla Krolowa, the security team hopes for the best and prepares for the worst. Griet removes a flag bearing the coat of arms of Krakow from her barracks bag and asks Walter to run it up the mast. Hands on the wheel, he gives her an irritated glance and nod, then bellows down to Walter. The chief deck-hand climbs the ladder to the bridge with the measured, deliberate movements of one attempting to conceal his own drunkeness, grabs the flag from Griet with a Vodka scented huff, and abruptly leaves to ascend to the roof.
The small boat continues to approach the Krolowa. At about 100m from the tug, it slows and each of the three occupants take it in turn to pull on gas masks. Thusly attired, the boat closes to within hailing distance.
The man in the bows, struggling to keep his balance, stands in the boat, causing it to rock and and yells something unintelligible. His voice is muffled by the gasmask. After a few more futile attempts, he seems to appreciate the accoustic impediment caused by his mask and pulls it up until it rests atop his head, revealing a narrow, dark-bearded face.
"Please halt your engines and drop anchor. We will be coming aboard momentarily to inspect your vessel and begin preliminary negotiations."
The spokesman wears Czech cammies and carries a slung AKM or vz.58Pi rifle. The boat's other occupants are dressed in Polish army uniforms and are armed with AKMs or AK-74s.
