Re: Sharks and Minnows

Cap'n Rae:
The Queen
Tucker picks up the starboard boats as the pass abreast of the tug's raised quarterdeck. He fires a five-round burst from the Mk-19 AGL at the trailing boat. All five grenades miss long, sending up tall geysers of white water between the pirate boat and the shore.

As soon as the pirate boats are aft of the Queen, they turn towards one another, curling around to come at her from behind. The pirates are now 100-200m aft of the Queen and racing towards her low fantail.

Next Moves?
"FUCK!" Tucker screams out as his shots from the 40mm miss it's target and watches as the boat goes nby without a mark on it other than water spray (if any at all).  As long as he can get the GL to bear down for more shots at the boat (or any of the others), Robert will try to lead one of the oncoming boats into the sights of his shots.

If Tucker can communicate with his milita person, he will try to tell him that they're going to be boarded.  If that's not an option, Robert will try the radio to tell everyone on the ship, "PREPARE TO REPEL BOARDERS!  I SAY AGAIN, PREPARE TO REPEL BOARDERS!  FIX BAYONETS!"

Tom Looks at David and Talks.

"Request permission go go aft and kill Pirates? No targets to the front and They will soon be on us."

If tom is oked to move, he will move to a position were he can engage the rear boats with 3 round burts from cover. When The boats come within 50m He will fire 15 round bursts. When They are within boarding distance 5 meters he will throw hand grenades into the packed boats.

In reply to Tom Jones (msg #206):

He shook his head in amazement.

"Ha! After all that, no firing the main weapon."

He handed the other man his 2 spare ammo cans and slung the third, then called the bridge on the intercom. "Permission to relocate to the stern?"

"Tom, get ready to move, and please carry my spare ammunition. We will wait for permission to leave our post." He checked his helmet and vest to make sure they were secure.

Waiting for an answer, he spoke to the ORMO, "hold this position here. Whichever of you has more experience, take this rifle and use it only if they come to the front. It's on safe." He pulled off the Lifchiki with 6 magazines and set it down by his Tantal/BG-15, picking up his PKM and pulling the sling over his head.

"Roger that, King, we're coming." Griet replied to Bayer's message, she looked over at Adam, "Keep us heading for the rail bridge and get closer to the G-K side bank, we have an ambush there."

She called to Dawid, "Get your people aft and prepare for the boarders."

She looked at the Starboard Dushka gunner and said, "Help get the grenade launcher aft."

"Anneka, Jason, a militiaman will help you get the Palmya aft, use it if you have time, if not, engage with small arms."

She looked over at the fire on the chart table and frowned, if she went to deal with that now she might lose the chance to deploy their ace in the hole. She looked at the motorboats aft and waited.

"Understood!"

He turned to Tom and the other men.

"We're going aft. Everyone, follow me. You ORMO, take my rifle and the magazines for it, but don't fire it unless ordered."

Getting a grip on the PKM, he led the men aft, keeping low to get into position facing rear at the fantail. He yelled to whoever might be covering the rear, "we're coming aft, cover us!"

When that was accomplished, he set the PKM on its bipod and commenced firing.

Wicks points at the youngest militia member

“Run to the German Captain and tell him Lt Wicks is engageing a pirate vessel hidden under the pylon of the rail bridge, and be very quick about it.”

He turns to Quyen “I'll try to return if I have time otherwise engage any pirate boats or this one if it moves and you have a shot.”

As they move Wicks gives the two Reserve Militia very brief instructions.

“When we arrive near the edge of the river we will engage a boat under the rail bridge, aimed shots. I will fire a 40mm HE grenade this will be your signal to open fire. You take any targets on the left, you any on the right.”

Wicks will lead the small fire team in a single file low trot forward to the point he can see the boat. When they are in position he will aim and fire his HK-69 at the occupants of the boat. Once the grenade is on its way he will pick up his M14K and fire two rounds at each target still present in the boat or in the water.

If at any point during the deployment phase the occupants of the boat react to the team he will fire the grenade and engage with his rifle.

Mariusz watched the drama on the river unfold. He grimaced as the massed automatic firepower failed to make a major dent in the boarding parties. The small craft had weathered the hail of fire well and were now jockeying for position as they tried to board. Only the MK-19 was in a position to return fire and Mariusz hoped that the more predictable course that the small craft would have to take to board the ship would make them slightly easier targets.

Only time would tell.

"There's no way to reach the shore party!" she yelled across to Griet.
"We're on our own. We should act like it!"
Banking on rescue by fire from the shore was a fools choice. Better they take advantage of their manouverability and all round firepower and hope that Konrad could redeploy his force to a closer, much more useful location.

"Adam, think you can spin around like a top? Stop them getting a hold?"

Once they started to board, it'd be next to impossible to resist them. Even the Homar Pec, or whatever the steam defence system was called, could only delay the inevitable, all the while reducing their speed and making the pirates ability to board all the easier.

The seed of an idea planted, Anneka returned her attention to the pirates, lining up for a short burst at a troop carrying boat the moment it came into close range.

Red River

On the River

As the pirates close in on the stern of the Queen, the lead boats swing out a little wider and continue to pour fire at the tug, focussing their attention on the AGL position atop the raised quarterdeck. Tucker picks out the boarder boat on the starboard side (his left, looking aft) and looses a second five-round burst. The grenades explode close aboard but fail to do much more than drench the boat's occupants. As Tucker bravely lines up for another go at the pirates, a bullet slams into his upper right arm, knocking him backwards to the deck. His militia assistant falls beside him with a serious bullet wound to the upper left arm.

The Mk-19 has been unmanned.

As Tucker and his shadow fall wounded, Tom, Dawid, and their two milita loaders arrive at the aft railing. Bullets whiz, ping, and snap all around them. The pirate boarder's boats are now no more than 50m from the tug's stern and still closing. The two fire support boats are even with their brethren, but dispaced slightly wider, and still spraying the Queen's stern with suppressive fire.

OOC: Anneka, Dawid, Tom, and the militiamen will all be able to fire at the boarders in the next round, if they wish to do so. It may be safer for Anneka to fire on the support boat on her side of the tug, though, instead of directly over the heads of her comrades at the taffrail.

Ashore

Wicks and his squad creep closer to the shore, undetected. He halts his squad in the sparse concealment along the riverside and slides south just enough to bring the loitering pirate boat into the sights of his HK-69 grenade launcher. Steadying himself, he calmly pulls the trigger and watches as the 40mm grenade sails 200m or so and lands smack dab in the middle of the boat, where it explodes in a flash and puff of white smoke. All three occupants are slammed against the sides of the boat, either dead or badly wounded. The boat begins to float away, drifting downriver with the current and slowly settling lower in the water.

Tom with the 45-round mag in his weapon will fire three 15-round burts at the closest boarding boat. He will aim at the front of the boat so his beaten zone and the rise of the muzzle due to recoil will cover the boat with his fire, ensuring that all 15 rounds will hit each time. He will fire from a supported and covered position.

Griet frowned as she saw Tucker and his loader go down in a hail of fire. She held her ground and waited, if they had any chance of survival this needed to be timed correctly. She grimaced, even then she estimated their chances as pretty hopeless now.

She listened to Adam's terse assessment of the tug's manouverability, and started to think on it's possibilities.

Wicks raises his rifle to cover the boat scanning for any targets. He quickly utters

“Cease fire. Identify your targets.”

Hoping to catch the militia men before they open fire. He glances along the opposite bank looking for movement.

It is then that he hears the muffled explosions and yells drifting up river on the breeze from the ongoing battle, it didn’t look good.

“Get down, you cover the boat and you the opposite bank.”

Dropping into the grass he quickly orientates his rifle towards the battle. It was a very long shot but things looked as if they where going from bad to worse. At the very least it maybe distracting for the pirates.

He lines up a machine gunner on one of the pirate craft through his sights. Wicks assumes a ridged prone position, controlling his breathing he fires and follows with a second shot. He then fires two additional shots at the pilot of the boat.

Getting a better sense of the teams surroundings and how exposed they are Wicks orders his small team back to the gun truck at a sprint.

Listening to the firing coming from the Queen and watching through his binoculars Jan is torn between maintaining position and rushing to help. Wicks and his crew seem to have the lone lurkning boat well in hand and sitting here serves no purpose, but rushing blindly down the shore is pointless as well. Finally he chooses to maintain, 1000m is just to far to cover quickly on foot.

Before Tucker can yell out and curse again as he misses with yet another string of shots from the MK-19, he feels the burning in his upper right arm as he drops to the deck.  He looks over and sees the militia man fall to the deck to with an injury to his arm as well.  He reaches tries to assess how bad the bleeding is on himself and apply a dressing if he can before he checks on his 'partner'.  While down, he grabs for his radio and transmits, "This  <winces> is Knife.  My post is down!  Not sure if <sigh> we're going to be any help.  See you on the other  side.  Knife out!"

Depending on how much time is available, Tucker will try to fix himself up first and try to tend to the wounded militia man that is wounded near him.  He will make sure his Browning HP is cocked & locked with the safety on.
