Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

It's the next day and things seem normal. After being stonewalled, T'shock eventually gave up for the time being and found a place to sleep. CHAD was updated by Jaq on the truth of the matter behind the Drizzeleaf incident. And now Jaq knows CHAD has been taking orders from either a voice in his head or a fairy (I'll let the players decide that one). CHAD's requirements are now known as well (can't have a character dying within one chapter, now can we?). Nono had the chance to work on Drizz's ship till nightfall (I'm excited to see the improvements). Joe clearly had nothing better to do than to find a place to stay as well and meet up with T'shock at the place she agreed to meet Nono at. Nash has enough information from his research to allow the player easy access to question-answer sessions with the GM about the Piressens either through PM or IM before each post he makes (I look forward to this). Lucky has since been informed of the Lockman competition that's going on today and that he should be there if only as eyes. Elena found a place to stay that has been reserved specifically for new arrivals (More specifically, people from places that don't have a claim on the settlement) and there are Blissians and thus, got Elena to socialize some with others of her own kind (as did Miya due to the other Deksharr bodyguards). By way of reminder, Jaqueline has a meeting with a Lockman rep today.

The News:
"A robbery occurred last night at the Barrak establishment, the robber having taken something the Barrakians refuse to inform us about."

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Nono would have welcomed Driz to stay the night on his ship, and he would have worked most of the time that he had on the tiny ship while relying on Cid to keep Ray away from her and keeping her entertained, two tasks Cid could handle no prob.

Gleaning what he learned from the solid construction of T'Shock's ship, Nono added several detachable black armor panels to Driz's ship, making it look something like this: http://www.uncrate.com/men/ima...n-begins-tumbler.jpg  What's more fun than making a Barakian ship into a hotrod?  Let me rephrase that.  What's AS fun as making a Barakian ship into a hotrod?  Making a tiny fragile fey ship into a TANK!  Kupohoho!

Of course, Nono took the liberty of painting his own logo and phone number on one of the panels like he's a sponsor for a Nascar or something.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Walter was the one to lead Elena and Miya to "Noobtown" as Walter called it.  Lucky got himself a room at the same hotel Elena did and morning finds him enjoying breakfast in the public dining area.  Not the fancy digs he's become accustomed to, but he's certainly not above hanging out with Blissians who he's been chatting with about how he plans to found a hospital with Elena's help.

"I suspect this Lockman competition will be the perfect opportunity to pitch the idea," he says before lowing his voice some, "I can't imagine they'd host one that didn't wind up involving injuries."

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

The trend of a Darkthorne having 'been there the whole time' was not the case today, as Joe was currently on his way to where they had figured on meeting up with T'Shock and Nono again.

'Would it be reasonable expectations or stereotyping to figure she is going to want to look into those robbery thing?' Joe wondered, as they went  by a convenient in passing scenery example of the news.

Regardless, Joe reached his destination without incident (so far), and looked around for those he planned on meeting.

OOC Style: Can't think of anything else Joe would have done different (they don't know T'Shock well enough to let em crash on his suited for living ship... Well, maybe if they asked).  Ah, and fitting a Metron Style Guncam to his handguns.

C.H.A.D. lies on his bunk staring at the cieling, discoving a new activity: letting his mind wander.  He goes over the events of the day before over and over.  Everything was new, none of it what he expected.  There was no combat, no mission was specified, save the one from the small voice, and he was wrong for following it.  Normally such mistakes would cause a soldier to be ejected from his troop.  For him that's his only use, what would he do if he lost his commander.  He realises he can't decide things for himself when he dosen't even know his options.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Jacqueline, unsurprisingly, has woken up early today to prepare herself for the meeting with the Lockman representative. Her hair is combed out and straightened in all the right places to frame her face and bring attention to it for communication. Even her fur was especially smoothed out and given an extra bit of brush today than normal. Currently, she's wearing a dark violet suit, perfectly pressed and making her purpose of business quite clear. The others on her ship know this as her 'Business' suit, with a capital B. It's no secret that she fully understands just how lucrative and important this deal is going to be.

Currently, she's waiting in her small conference room, patiently going over what she knows about the Lockman empire and what she specifically wants and needs out of this partnership for the Diamant casino. She's having a small glass of wine with her reading this morning. Only one to get her blood pumping for the morning and keep her relaxed.

Sabre has since been assigned to watch over CHAD primarily, if only because of his success the previous day in getting him to return of his own free will. The previous day, after his return and explanation, saw CHAD being given a full briefing on where everything in the ship is located and who his superiors are. His specific training for his position, however, is to begin today.

Sabre arrives at CHAD's quarters with a tray of food, offering it to the giant. "Breakfast this morning, Chad. I think, once we get everybody used to you, we'll have you eating with the other security officers." He smiles hopefully at him, "Speaking of which, you have one hour to eat before you're to report to the cargo bay. You'll be getting started in your position today... and also get more of a uniform."

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Nash is getting prepared today for the contest. He still has no idea what this contest is going to be, but he's prepared himself with knowledge about the area and Lockman, as well as the local culture involved in this. He still doesn't have the speech down, but he doesn't plan on speaking much anyway unless he has to. At the very least, he's looking the part.

His mind races, What's going to happen today? What's this contest going to be? Probably dangerous. Probably cut-throat. Can I do that? Not if it involves fighting. Maybe it will be a test of knowledge? Trivia? No... that's stupid. This is going to be dangerous... but I can do this. Relax. Stay calm. Keep up appearances.

Considering his wings, he still cannot wear a shirt, but he's otherwise dressed more like the others in the area, biding his time and keeping his ears sharp for more information on what's going to be happening today.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Elena and Miya are both in very relaxed conditions at the moment, being able to converse with their own kind again.

Elena is swift to tell the other Blissians about her plan for a hospital in the area and tell them about what happened with Jason and Lucky.  She's quick to applaud Lucky for all the help he's given, wanting to include him in the telling as much as possible. At his mention of the competition, Elena is at first excited at his talking of opportunity for getting a hospital moving... but the reasoning for it makes her frown, Oh... Is it really going to result in a lot of people getting hurt? Shouldn't we do something to kind of stop that so that fewer get hurt and need immediate treatment?"

Miya is still keeping tabs on Elena, but she's also taking the opportunity to relax her guard a little around her fellow Deksharr. They may not jump to protect Elena as quickly as they'd move to protect their own clients, but she's certain that only an idiot would cause trouble with so many trained arms around. In her mind, that means she only needs to keep watch out for Walter, for now.

Miya isn't one to gossip, so she keeps information about Elena and her purpose to herself for now, especially since the Blissian has been doing a fine job of representing herself on it so far.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Drizzeleaf's ship not only looks like the wicked Bat-Tank of the "Batman Begins" movie, but is even more durable size-to-durability-ratio wise. Ironically due to its size. Similar to how a lego construction has a very hard time breaking if built right, Drizzeleaf's ship is now something like that, but metal.

When she sees it, she squeals in delight and hovers over to kiss Nono on the cheek. "This is great! I *have* to fly it into the restaurant you're meeting the barrakian in and park on the table!" she says with much enthusiasm. "That is, if the restaurant isn't one of those "no fae ships allowed inside" types." she says the last part in a disappointed "spoiled sports" tone, having experience behind that statement.

T'shock is waiting there, wearing Barrakian style clothing (viking-like hide "armor" of sorts). She notices Joe and waves him over. "Got us a table. C'mon, let's order. I'm hungry and getting much hungrier by the minute." and she goes to have a seat. "Sleep well?" she asks once seated with Joe.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

One of the blissians at "noobtown" is none other than Billy. He's leaning in a chair, guitar in his lap as he is plucking away some beautiful classical piece, humming along to it in his angelic voice. He has no robe or sunglasses here. He just wears those when he goes out so that he's not bothered by too many "oh look a Blissian!" tourists. It's a common practice among Blissians who are far from their home-world for a long time. He is such a case.

His ears pirk as he overhears the conversation between Lucky and Elena. "Stop a Lockman competition?" he says with a chuckle, his voice as soothing as ever, "That would cause more hurt than help. Let them have their fun. I'm sure it won't even amount to broken bones. Just bumps and bruises. Think of it like a race. There's always the risk of a crash. But in this case, they aren't driving two tons of metal around. Still... going there is advised if you're looking to help. I myself plan to go there."

To those with incredible perception, Billy doesn't have a Deksharr with him. Either his is slacking off, or... he might actually NOT be assigned one. Which is rare for good reason. But then, with the Deksharr and Blissians mingling and such, this is a hard thing to notice.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

A male Deksharr nearby says, "Actually, the Gynome has a point" he's referring to Lucky, "If you ask the Lockmans, they may be willing to offer a donation to improve their press. There will be news crews at this competition, you know."

(1 Gynomb is the name of the black cat race, usually from Planet Pirace)

Speaking of news, the Blissian news is playing:
"This is Hiyoo, bringing you the latest in Seralara; One of our top geologists, Ejuket Roger Xalitron, has discovered a new mineral on home-world! This is very exciting news as it shows promise for more discovery of our very planet!" she says with excitement. "Ejuket Xalitron?"

(2 Seralara is a city on Planet Bliss.)
(3 Ejuket is sort of like a professor on Bliss)

The camera moves to a male blissian with a proud smile. "Thank you, Hiyoo. Yes, for now the mineral does not have a name, but we have discovered some really nice qualities to it, not unlike the popular "Gammus" mineral. Here's what it looks like." he holds up a green rock that seems to glow and dim, pulsing with light almost like the light is a heartbeat. He continues on some random factoids about the mineral, but is very brief.

(4 Gammus is the common fuel used like gasoline for us Earthlings)

The Deksharr news is also playing, of course:
"...in his ship. He claims it was sabotage and suspects he knows who is was, but will not so much as say who until he is certain and has all the evidence. Captain Wilnum?" the camera goes to Cpt Wilnum, a strong, middle-aged Deksharr man who looks his part. "I do not tolerate such cowardice." he says in a very loud, stern tone. "I have poured my entire life savings into getting to the bottom of this. Saboteur, beware, for among the things I purchased with my savings is a massive bounty for you. Dead or alive. I hope you die of fear, you low-life." the reporter then asks, "You did, of course, make sure bounty-hunters won't simply bring you a dead body and throw fake evidence at you to make a quick buck, right?" the captain answers, "You're straight I made sure! All bounty hunters are expected to come to me with irrefutable evidence. If they bring a dead body and it isn't someone worthy of the death sentence, I will see to their rightful imprisonment and sentencing for murder." the reporter nods. "Thank you, Captain. Well you heard it here, folks. All you bounty hunters out there? The reward for finding, detaining and bringing the saboteur is ten THOUSAND credits. You heard me right. You could practically retire. But the captain did not sink that much money to be scammed, so you scammers can just forget it. For more information, go to www.sabotagebounty.net."

------------------------------

The competition has not started, but even now, it is being set up and prepared for. Party favors, materials, tables, chairs, you name it. It's all being organized, situated and set up for the upcoming event. Should Nash have shown up early, all he would find is a bunch of hired help doing the mentioned organizing. But at the head of this is Rocky. The very young teen son of Nick Lockman himself. The brown-haired human boy looks about as the workers busy themselves setting up.

"Aww... c'mon, Rocky... lemme take a load off your shoulders." a rather dark-furred looking red fox with off-white hair says. Whether he's Piressen or Tharian in origin is impossible to tell, but chances are good he's Piressen what with him serving Rocky and all.

"Naw. I wanna do this." Rocky replies. "Thanks for the sentiment, Brian. Tell ya what. Take care of security detail. I know you'll handle that better than me, hands down. And by the way... thanks for coming."

Brian nods, "Heh. I wouldn't miss this, Rocky. Fun as you are, I *gotta* see how this turns out."

Rocky chuckles and smirks. "Yeah. It'll be fun."

The two of them do some kind of secret handshake and Brian walks off. If Nash is there, he would go straight for Nash as though Nash was on the schedule of things to do for Brian. Of course, if Nash isn't there, this whole exchange between Rocky and Brian is pure flavor text for the enjoyment of the players.

------------------------------

Pros and cons time. The Lockman Empire is known to be competing with Pedro Sickler (the ruler of Planet Tavern), trying to compete with Tavern's sheer volume of casinos. The Lockman Empire is also more emphatic about protecting its assets (and thus, would be more protective of Jaqueline than the other big wigs of the universe, save maybe for the Tharian Empire). So while they serve as a nice insurance agency, Jaqueline will soon be on Tavern's radar as competition. Making deals with Tavern would be more lucrative, but they don't really protect their own and almost laugh at a fallen casino for not being able to protect itself.

The Lockman rep arrives at Jaqueline's conference room, having been shown in. He has a seat when he is invited to and looks at Jaq with a perfect poker face.

Nono is shaking his circle fist as he gushes tears ( http://nightstorm77.deviantart...NIME-TEARS-136588187 )of joy at Drizzeleaf's reaction to his work.  When she kisses his cheek, his face turns beat red and his nose bleeds.

"Kupopopo!" he says, "I'm so very happy you like it!  I was a little afraid it wasn't sparkly enough for your tastes...  Well... VERY afraid.  I was ready with all kinds of defensive things to say like 'I left it matte black so you could choose your color scheme to paint over it.'  Beautiful fae girl kiss is one of the best payments and compliments I've ever received!  Please do show off!  I doubt the restaurants around here are snobby enough to frown on such a sweet lady's happiness!  If so, I'll be happy to watch them embarrass themselves for lack of anything they can do about it!  Let's go-ho-ho!"

When Driz is ready, Nono heads for the restaurant.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

As focused Lucky is on the conversation and Elena's pretty face, not to mention the other very pretty girls present, both Blissian, Deksharr, and otherwise, he can't help but be distracted by Billy's singing.  Wow.  That guy's got the kind of voice that just melts your mind, body, and spirit!  Lucky's trying not to be overwhelmed or cry, but is having a hard time of it.  He may not be perceptive enough to noticed Billy has no body guard, but when it comes to money, he has a sixth sense.  His ear flicks and he manages to catch both news reports.

Seriously? Lucky's thinking, refraining from face-palming, You went public with that?  Better hope that mineral is scarce Mr. Xalitron, or you and your planet just made some very powerful enemies that make that 10,000 cred bounty seem like pocket change.

Back to the topic at hand.  Lucky may be a non-violent guy, but he's still a guy.  He was looking forward to the competition, blood and all.  Stopping it was the last thing on his mind.

"The musician is right," he says, having never been introduced to Billy, "I may be a little alien to this particular colony, but I spent many a year on Tavern, and I'm pretty sure this colony would likely riot if the competition were canceled.  But like he said.  I'm sure it won't be too bad."

He turns to face Billy.

"Wow!  Words can't describe.  Love your music!"

As for Walter... well...  he has a place of his own several blocks away from Noobtown.  He agreed to meet Lucky at the hotel after breakfast and hasn't arrived yet.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Joe's fashion sense meanwhile, was much the same as it was yesterday.  "I slept alright, hope you did too."  They hadn't expected T'shock to wait for him to the point of not eating without him.  Though as least she's not gonna starve herself on account of Nono not around yet.

Joe's intent to bring up the robbed Barakian place (comments of 'Is this because I'm a Barakian?' sort from T'Shock would be met with a dull 'well, Yes') is sidelined by the Deksharr rant. "...Wait, they aren't saying who sabotaged... Whatever, before they have the evidence.  But they're offering 10 K credits to catch someone anyways?"

As soon as Sabre opens the door he stands at attention.  "Reporting for duty!" he greets firmly.  As he;s offered the tray he accepts it, inspecting the double lumberjack breakfast special before him.  To the comment of the security crew getting used to him he asks, "Why do they need to 'get used' to me?" he asks sounding a bit less buisnesslike.

After recieving his orders he nods, "It will not take me an hour to eat.  I will report to the cargo bay in exactly one hour." he states.

"Will my door be left unlocked or will I have to disable the locks again?" he asks referring to the only other time he broke out.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Jacqueline 'hrms' as she thinks about the consequences and possibilities of this partnership. Looking at the information she has on the rivalry between Lockman and Sickler, she's amazed that she agreed to this meeting so readily, and that her father didn't have more qualms with it. She puts away her docket of information as well as her wine as soon as the representative is ushered in.

Jacqueline stands officially as the rep comes in, "Welcome to the Diamant ship. Please, have a seat so that we can begin." She motions to a chair directly across from where she's standing, slowly taking a chair herself and folding her hands calmly on the table as she waits for the representative to do the same.

Once he's seated, she nods, "As I'm sure you're aware, I am Jacqueline Diamant of the Diamant company. And you are...?"

Sabre smiles at CHAD, a little patronizingly, "The crew needs to get used to you because they're not very familiar with your kind. If you're going to work with us, then we'll need to make sure the team can work around you without being distracted, and vice versa."

He nods firmly at CHAD's comment that eating won't take him an hour, "The hour is so that you can eat and get your food digested. Just some preparation time, really."

When asked about the doors being locked, Sabre quickly answers that the doors will be unlocked, but adds that CHAD isn't to listen to any 'little voices' telling him to leave the ship or do anything other than the orders he's just been given.

With all that being said, Sabre leaves CHAD to eat as he goes to prepare himself for the day and check up on CHAD's uniform.

Nash is around and close enough for his sensitive ears to overhear the conversation between Rocky and Brian. Unfortunately, he isn't able to see the handshake they give, nor is he really sure that they're doing that, as he's doing his best to not look at them directly.

He's a little miffed that the conversation doesn't reveal anything about the competition, but the fact that Rocky himself is so near makes him shift and wiggle his ears a little anxiously.

To better clarify on his appearance, Nash is wearing a pair of baggy jeans over a comfortable, but tough pair of sandals. Along with being shirtless, he's wearing a dark green bandanna around his forehead. Sadly, with his eyesight being so poor, he can't do without his trademark glasses, lowering his 'tough guy' points just a touch.

When he hears Brian approaching, he does his best to appear aloof and calm, sticking his hands into the pockets of his jeans and not looking at the fox until he's almost upon him. He quietly regards him with a nod.

Don't talk much... stay calm... At least it's not Rocky. Act like you know what you're doing. He thinks to himself reassuringly.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Elena's ears droop a little as Lucky and others around her clarify why stopping the Lockman competition would be a BAD thing. She seems somewhat relieved when Billy doesn't seem worried and compares it to a race.

"Well... you all ARE making a lot of sense. I suppose I don't know enough about Lockman personally to know if they would really support us or not, but it sounds hopeful!" She looks at Lucky, beaming, "And you seem especially familiar with all of this, so it's going to be extremely helpful to have you there! Do you think it would be all right if you tried to present the idea to the Lockmans? Or maybe see if they'd be willing to talk to me about it?"

The Blissian's ears perk as she listens to the news lightly. She's curious about the new element, and excited as well, but it's something secondary to her mission at the moment.

Miya has been mostly staying quiet, keeping watch over Elena as she converses and making sure nothing gets started. Of course, she's hardly worried about that at all, what with so many Blissians around. She does notice that Billy doesn't have a Deksharr bodyguard, or at least that one isn't present for him. So far, she's been able to connect the various bodyguards in the room to their Blissians, but there was no such luck with Billy.

She listens to the Deksharr news as it's available, raising her brows a little at the prospect of such a large bounty. She makes a mental note to keep an eye out and stay alert while they're moving around. If the opportunity presents itself where she can capture the bounty while still performing her duties, she'll certainly take it.

Of course, her primary assignment of guarding Elena will always come first. She has no question in her mind about that.

Drizzeleaf hops into the cockpit of her revised ship and hovers it alongside Nono. She talks into a microphone and megaphone speakers amplify her voice such that she's as loud as an average sized person. "This should make it easier for you to hear me. But hey... don't you worry about the jet-black. I have a hologram projector for new paint jobs. Saves on money in a big way and fits for my constantly changing mood. The matte black is perfect, though! Imagine I'm sneaking around... nothing reflects off my dark ship in the shadows as I go un-noticed!" she squeaks over the speakers. "Heee.. well anyhow, I am excited to OH look! The restaurant!"

Driz sends her ship on in the restaurant. The people there don't seem to object. They have a standard "no speeding" rule posted in the form of Fae speed measurements (8 inches per second) and stop signs written in Fae, but that's about it. Interesting note, thanks to this being a common thing, MOST people know the Fae word for "stop". Very handy in more cases than just traffic rules in a restaurant.

Driz spots T'shock and Joe, parks her ship proudly at their table and gets out with her chest puffed out and fists on hips.

T'shock nods to Joe in response to his question on Deksharr antics. "It's a good way to have the whole universe suddenly turn into your personal investigator AND capturer. Still, for 10k, you could have hired a pro detective and then a merc if you were too lazy to capture them yourself. Problem with that is it takes time. And if I recall correctly, the Deksharr hate wasting time. Especially when it's personal like this guy's making it out to be. Every method has a pro and con. The con here is wasting money and the criminal might even simply be after earning rep via bounty. The pro, of course, is having the whole greedy universe after the guy and catching him quick."

She then turns her attention to the Fae ship and raises an eyebrow. "OK that is cool lookin'." She then says, "Good morning you two." as she nods from Drizzeleaf to Nono, slightly embarrassed she forgot the name of the Fae.

Billy can't hear Lucky's thoughts, but he is very empathic and saw the admiration Lucky had for him get interrupted by the words of the Blissian news. He smiles directly at Lucky, knowing the guy is probably concerned for the Blissians. Isn't that cute? Billy thinks to himself, then smiles brightly at Lucky. "Why thank you, kind sir. My name is Billy." he can speak like a native of Tharia when he wants to, but he's going "normal Blissian" grammatical correctness for now as he likes keeping most guessing. It's almost a game for him.

Billy glances over to Elena and then looks back at Lucky. "I like her idea. You seem like a great intermediary. But I couldn't help notice you being distracted by the Blissian news... something wrong?"

Brian finishes walking to Nash and says, "Welcome. You're not part of the staff, so you must be an early bat. My name's Brian. What's yours?" he offers, wondering what the percentage is in the bat population of those who want eye surgery to those who don't. It crosses his mind to swipe the bat's glasses, but he smacks the bully tendencies down.

------------------------------

The rep answers, "I am Gerard Kimble. I'm here representing the interests of the Lockmans in your casino, but as such am trusted to make the necessary decisions as if I was Tchatzka Lockman herself." Tchatzka being Nick's sister and head of his financial division, Mr Kimble didn't feel the need to explain that to a business-minded gal like Jacqueline. "The terms I bring to the table are very simple. We have three options that we give to all our potential partners. They are listed on this paper in a generic form, but we would obviously discuss the details of the ones you are interested in." he lays a paper in front of Jacqueline. The paper shows very short, straight-to-the-point sentences listed like so;

Lockman business partner options:

1) Information Trade: In exchange for copies of all your financial records, Lockman will provide you with financial information on those that will effect your business both directly and indirectly.

2) Percentage Deal: For a percentage of all your income, Lockman will provide you with insurance and protection from both financial and physical attacks.

3) Favor Plan: Lockman will get rid of bullies that the Percentage Deal doesn't cover in exchange for certain favors.

He waits for Jacq to read before saying, "Obviously, option 3 is less likely to be worked out to your satisfaction than options 1 and 2, but I would still like to encourage you to speak your mind if you do have something you wish to take care of in any case. Also, those 3 options are not everything. They are just the three I come most prepared to work out with you. If you have something else you desire, I am prepared to work that out with you as well."

Joe is totally going to respec his character if Drizzleaf's ship was tougher than his own.

"I'm more concerned with their sending such offers after someone, when they openly admitted they have no evidence...  That's probably why then along the lines you said, a ton of people out for some cash after them who wouldn't question the situation as much as a single hired professional."  Of course, nothing says they couldn't have hired a professional who didn't care if the target was innocent or not.

The Voice On Head lands their ship, and Joe waves hi to the little lady.  "Hi, nice ride."  They joys of automatic doors are a wonderful plus to driving inside...  Without crashing through scenery.

"Good morning to you too, M'Lady!" Nono chimes, "I'm so very hap-hap-happy you and Joe approve of the upgrade to Driz's ship, I could just blow a gasket!  I heard talk of a hired professional!  It doesn't get much more professional than yours truely.  So what can I tinker for ya?"

He takes out a wrench and deftly spins it around betwixt his fingers.  His eyes go wide as the idea of having a fae's tiny tinkering fingers in his employ dawns on him!

"Say Drizzeleaf!  I just realized what a wonderful mechanic you'd make!  Ever consider the tinkering business?  A fantastic fae belle'd be perfect for the profession!  Would make for a clever jingle too.  Tinker Belle: aspiring apprentice to the Notorious Nono!  Oh-ho-ho!"

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Lucky admires Elena's beaming face with an endearing smile.

"Who could resist such a sunshine smile?" he answers, drinking in the very pleasant sight, "If it takes any more than saying 'If you agree to sponsoring a hospital she'll hug you!' to convince them, I'll question their sanity.  I'd be honored to get a foot in the door for you, Elena.  The Lockmans are an adventurous bunch I hear, but even if you didn't throw that radiant smile into the deal, I'm sure they'd see the sense in having people handy equipped to patch up this new colony's population."

One of the few things that could peel Lucky's off Elena's face at this point is Billy's angelic voice, and peel it does.  He smiles and bows to the suave Blissian, very much tickled by his and Elena's confidence in him.

"A pleasure, Billy.  My name's Lucky.  Your voice and her smile are about all my brain can handle right now.  News?  Oh!  You mean about the mineral?  Oh...  I was just..."

He taps the corner of his mouth.  How does one put it into words?  I think that guy's putting your race at risk?  I was wondering how I could profit off of his naivete?  Or perhaps warn your government that they should never export the stuff?  Basically admit that I think that I'm smarter than a Blissian scholar, his colleagues, and the news editors who allowed the story to get out.

Lucky rubs behind his head and grins bashfully, "I guess my kitty curiosity was kicking in.  Lots of questions I'd ask about it if I could, but I need to stay focused on where I am."

C.H.A.D. makes short work of breakfast, and takes note of the time. "45 minutes until I report.." he says to himself.  In the extra time he goes to the bathroom sink to inspect himself before heading out.  He looks over his face, noticing a darker patch of skin on his chin and neck.  He splashes a few handfuls of water on his face and starts to rub at the dirty spot realising this skin feels rougher than the rest of his skin.  Curiously he take a closer look at the mirror peering at the stubble starting to grow on his face.  It looks like he's missed the finer points of male grooming.

C.H.A.D. snaps out of it in time to make his report in the cargo bay.  Dutifully he arrives dead center of the cargo bay 10 minutes early.  He stands in that one spot, dead center, unmoving... Even as the weasel on the forklift sonds his horn a few times before giving up and just driving around him.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Jacqueline's eyes widen briefly in surprise when Gerard slides the paper forward, taking it up and looking it over closely. She nods at his comments about working out options, and her eyes narrow as she gets a bearing on the wording of each option.

Slowly, she lays the paper down, "You say 'options', so I'm guessing that we can only choose one plan such as these for our partnership?  Or are you offering all of these in addition to anything else that we work out today, so long as the requirements are met? If that's the case, then I'm especially interested in what you mean in option three, regarding favors." She folds her hands and regards Gerard with a leveled gaze, "That's a purposefully vague term... Can you give me a better example of what you mean?"

As the hour draws closer, two other opossums arrive, both dressed in black uniforms. They seem a bit young, at least younger than Sabre, but they don't look the least bit inexperienced. Seeing CHAD, they take a step back in surprise and look him over before assuming a similar professional position.  Not long after they arrive, the Security Chief, Marcus, walks out into the cargo bay.  He's very short, but his uniform is clean and pressed and is snug enough to give a hint of his impressive musculature.

He looks at CHAD and smiles, "You're the new member of the team that went AWOL on his first day on this ship, aren't ya?  I dunno who's orders you were following in doing that, but, while you are here, you'll report to me first and foremost.  You can address me as 'Chief' or 'Sir'." His face turns stern as he speaks, nodding to the two opossums next to CHAD, "Xavier, Russell, you two will be taking CHAD with you on your patrols today after I'm done with him here. For now, I want you both to guard Miss Diamant's conference. Sabre and Bruno will relieve you shortly... so long as things don't get complicated."

The two opossums smile lightly at CHAD and introduce themselves briefly before nodding at Marcus and going to their temporary posts.

Left alone with CHAD, the Chief walks up to him, hands behind his back and looks him over, "Well, we're gonna need to get you a proper uniform so that you can fit in with the rest of us, Chad. Lucky for you, we've already got someone on the job." He smirks a little at that as he walks over to a collection of crates and unzips a duffel bag sitting atop one of them.
He pulls out a folded black mass of clothing. It's a uniform very similar to the ones the other two opossums were wearing, consisting of a button down, long-sleeved shirt, a pair of black slacks with an orange stripe up the outsides of the legs, and also a large pair of shoes.

"You'll have to provide the socks yourself, and any other underwear that you'll need, of course. We were able to get your measurements for the shirt and pants yesterday, but we had to guess on the shoes. Let me know what doesn't fit and we'll see what we can do. For now, though, take these and put 'em on. I don't care if you use a bathroom or if you go all the way back to your quarters to get dressed, but I want you back here ASAP, understood?"

"Yo... name's Nate." He pushes up his glasses steadily with one hand while the other calmly rests on his pocket, "Nice... uhh...  setup you have so far... Though I still haven't heard exactly what's... gonna go down here." He pauses occasionally in his speech, trying to keep his tone level and appearing to be a slow speaker, though the flow is not entirely unnatural.

At Billy's talking, Elena looks at him too. Though she doesn't have the same level of distraction from Billy being a Blissian, she still seems very drawn to his calm voice, leaning forward with interest as he and Lucky talk. She doesn't really offer her own comments on the mineral, seeming to want to, instead, let the two talk it out.

If Joe is jealous of a ship as tough as a bowling ball, he's got more to worry about than a character respec. Like standards. But then, he's known this for some time. Jealous that the ship looks like Batman's tank-car-batmobile, admin would understand. XD

Drizzeleaf says, "Thanks, Joe and T'shock!" with a little squeak to her thanks. Standard fairy accenting. She then looks at Nono. "Oh dear me, that offer is overly zealous, but the sentiment is sooo approvingly appreciated! I'm no mechanic, really. Now master magician on the other hand, that is my profession!" she looks at Joe and asks, "What is your profession?"

Yes, the 300 reference was on purpose.

T'shock is temporarily cheered up by Nono and Driz, but loses her smile when Nono offers his services in response to mention of a pro. "Wrong kind of professional, Nono. A ship was sabotaged and people died. So unless you can fix people back to life or fix broken hearts, I'm afraid this is outside of your expertise." she looks at Joe. "The guy mentioned that every person brought to him would be investigated and if it is a false accusation the person who brought them in would be punished. That tends to discourage foul play. Especially when the punishment for killing someone is death. If the police offer a bounty and you kill someone at random and bring him in, what do you think would happen? I haven't been a bounty hunter for very long, but I can tell you it works for a reason and thus, is still around for a reason. Namely, in this business, if you are stupid, you die. If not, you learn to play by the rules or die. I'd think someone like yourself would know this..."

Joe *seemed* like a capable knows-the-rules-of-the-street kind of guy. Yes, she knows there will be people stupid enough to try and fool the man who put out the bounty, but she also knows they won't get away with it. And if they kill an innocent doing so, they would have killed an innocent sooner or later. Better they kill an innocent sooner and get caught and killed than they kill an innocent later and not get caught. Though she decides against saying something quite THAT calloused in public. It wouldn't be taken right, or at least, wouldn't be taken well.

Billy pets his wedding ring discretely with his other hand. "Thanks again for the compliment to my voice. But please don't give the doctor false hopes, Lucky." he says with a sad smile to the black cat. "Most people don't just give up money or grants for a hug, regardless of who that hug comes from. Sad, but true. If you were exaggerating, please pardon my objection.." he says apologetically. "While I can't speak for this fine lady, most Blissians would take what you said as pure fact since they are aliens and even if our culture wasn't different from yours, they will likely hang on your every word for what works and doesn't work in your culture. Again, I do not mean to sound critical or cynical, so please don't take offense. Just making sure you understand the weight of your words. Still, since I will be there, I'll be happy to help translate any misunderstandings between our cultures."

He can't help it anymore and decides to boast of his love. He holds up the ring finger. "I know your culture almost as well as my own, for I have been married to a Gynomb for 25 years." he has a proud smile.

(Quick reminder: Gynomb is Lucky's race. Black cats.)

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Brian says, "Nobody has, really. Rocky's holding a contest and each time he does something like that, he keeps it new and interesting. Part of the fun is that the people don't know what he'll hit them with next. This is the first time he's held such a contest on this new settlement, though. So if you want any clue? He might theme the contest based off the settlement itself. So maybe he'll have reps from all the people groups. Or maybe he'll have members of each race compete. To be honest with you, as his best friend, *I* don't know what to expect yet. But that's partly 'cause I don't wanna. It's like knowing what your Christmas gift is before you open it. So... why are you here so early?"

Amy is still quiet, not giving Nash advice one way or another.

------------------------------

Gerard Kimble responds with a nod as Jaqueline makes her assumptions, but he adds, "You can take all of the above, but for now, let's keep things simple for both our sakes. Yes, option 3 is kept vague purposefully, as you put it. Regarding favors, an excellent example would be, in fact, Rocky's recent competition. I'm sure an informed lady such as yourself at least heard a rumor about it by now. But suppose he had asked to have his little competition at your casino instead of where he's having it right now. That would be a favor right there: Provide the Casino as a place for him to do his thing at no cost, no questions asked. Another example would be this: Suppose someone you are doing business with has done something to upset the Lockmans. Suppose the Lockmans were so upset, they decided to ask you to simply stop doing business with the offender. You would do so, even if you didn't know the reason. Though in most cases, we would tell you why. Or maybe all we ask is that you keep a flyer of some other Lockman business. The bigger the favor we ask, or the bigger the number of smaller favors we ask, the more service you earn. It is vague for a reason... there is no set, known favors, despite the psychics in our employ. But my examples are very possible, real examples."

"I meant every word of it," he says in all honesty, "No exaggeration.  I don't believe our hopes are false.  I will clarify that I don't expect they'd make the wise choice for the hug alone, rather that it would be more than enough to seal the deal."

Lucky then points at the wedding band.

"Congratulations to both of you for your long love.  Hope I find someone special like that!  Thanks for offering to act as cultural interpreter.  I'm sure it'll come in quite handy."

(A sharp guy like Billy might pick up that Lucky's showed a very brief twinge of sadness when the topic of marriage came up.)

About then Walter enters the dining area and begins approaching Lucky who gives a cheery wave.  Walter looks like he's not a morning person and gives a half-wave and a yawn.

Jacqueline raises a brow and nods slowly in recognition to Mr. Kimble as he mentions the Lockman competition going on.  Her hands fold calmly in front of her as she listens to his examples, relaxing a little as they don't sound illegal. However, her brow creases in thought as she considers that such things could cut into their profits more than a standard partnership already would. Despite these thoughts, she lets him finish.

After Kimble has given his examples, she nods again, "I see... basically a clause of scratching each other's backs.  Of course, I would hope that we have the freedom to refuse doing favors for you if they prove too costly for us." She looks him over carefully as she says that, "As for the rest of the 'plans' given, I think they sound fairly reasonable, especially when we consider just how far the Lockman name reaches. However... they almost seem purely defensive.  You mention protecting us from bullies, protecting us from financial and physical attacks, and giving us information on those that will effect our business.  Considering the large name of Lockman, I think we would stand to gain a lot of income if you helped to promote us. Advertising, suggesting us to clients or other partners, etcetera.  I believe that would also be in your interest.  For example, take the competition that's planned to go on today. You gave the example of having it run in our casino as a favor to you. I would think that something like that would also drive up business for us, meaning that it would be lucrative on both ends."

She arcs a brow to Kimble, "Do you see my meaning?"

Marcus takes a step back when CHAD gets undressed and redressed right there in front of him. He clearly wasn't expecting that.  At CHAD's stoic demeanor, however, he shrugs and folds his arms behind his back.

"Looks like you and I are gonna have a mess of work to do... But at least you've got some military basics in you, from what I can see. That'll make things faster." He nods firmly, "All right, Chad. Let's get the basics out of ya! You can stand right, and I'm betting you can march just fine. Do you have any weapons or combat training?  If so, then what in?"

Nothing against Blissians, but Walter will be happy to exit the room full of them.  He feels uncomfortable among them like an NRA member might feel uncomfortable at a PETA meeting.  Walter takes a few leftover goodies from the now abandoned breakfast plates and heads out.  Lucky would follow should the others show they're ready to go.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

In response to the weapons training C.H.A.D. starts to list off an extensive list of simple hand weapons, assault weapons, melee weapons, snipng weapons. Once that list is called off he continues, "I am also trained in the piloting of most ground assault and armored personnel carriers.  I am also trained in hand-to-hand combat."  He stops to take a breath before continuing, "I have training for pultiple tactical purposes.  Assault, defense, covert operations, urban warfare, geurilla warfare, and tactical land vehicle warfare." he explains still standing at attention.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Jacqueline suppresses a frown at Mr. Kimble's words, her mouth instead becoming a thin line as he further explains the specifics of this partnership, particularly the part about Rocky actually moving his event to her casino.

"... That may be something to consider for later, since the casino isn't quite ready for such a crowd, yet. I don't think it would be terribly fair to delay the competition while everyone waits for the construction to finish. A grand opening to a construction site is not all that grand." She gives a polite smile before drawing her mouth tight again, "Not being able to help us with advertising or spreading word of us makes this a little less lucrative for us, you understand... though I admit that the offer of protection is not one that I'm taking lightly either. Still, there is one question that hasn't been completely answered yet, and I am not a fan of being vague. I'm aware that you'll be gaining a portion of our income with this kind of deal, but what else are you looking for from us in this partnership? Why are you specifically interested in my casino?"

She's pushing her hand, she knows, but there's enough at stake here for her to believe it to be worth it.

Marcus does a double-take at all of the proficiencies that CHAD lists, stepping back for a moment, "What in the blazes are you doing here when you got all of that under your belt...?"

He frowns a little before he speaks in his more authoritative voice again, "All right, Chad, where were did you get your training from for all of this? It's not everyone that's trained to be an army all by themselves. I'll want to know who you were under before so that I can really get a good look at your record. You should know that I don't like having mystery men under me."

Nash's ears twitch as he 'hears' Amy's input on the suggestion, though it looks like they're responding to the suggestion itself. He nods at Brian, pushing his glasses up a bit.

"... I'll be sure to do that." He considers thanking Brian, but he decides to do nothing more than nod in thanks, keeping a somewhat aloof air.

Not wanting to waste time after the suggestion, Nash takes a breath and turns to look at Rocky. He calms his nerves before he steadily starts walking towards him, keeping his hands in plain view, but also not trying to look too out of place. When he gets close, he gives a wave. "... 'lo there. Name's Nate... uhm... I'm here for the competition... A bit early, I know."

His thoughts are fairly quiet right now, as he's fully in the moment and wanting to be careful here. His ears are tilted quite forward to be sure to not mistake a word from Rocky.

Elena smiles brightly to Billy, nodding in agreement with Lucky, "I'd love to meet her too, of course! I'm sure she's every bit as kind as her father."

She nods in agreement with Lucky when he says that it's time to go, giving a somewhat sad look to Billy at having to say good bye, but stopping her sadness as she gets an idea.

"Hey, maybe you'd like to come with us? I have to say... you seem a lot more comfortable and familiar than I am with a place like this. Having two of us there is certain to get more attention and support, don't ya think?" She looks to Lucky for support on the idea, her eyes wide and eager.

Miya, meanwhile, has silently taken up her usual closeness to Elena, keeping watch on the somewhat more surly Walter, but not seeming any more threatened by him than usual.

Billy smiles brightly at the nice words about his baby. "She has a big heart to be sure..." and a cool temper to match. But he doesn't say much on her yet, feeling like if he even talks humbly about her it'll sound like bragging. He'll let the girl speak for herself. "...she's my world." there we go. Honest enough without bragging.

Billy could have sworn he said he was going to the Lockman event. But to say so out loud sounds mean. He nods. "I will be going." but he does repeat himself on the other point, "Being familiar with both Tharian and Blissian cultures will give me an edge. Even if the Lockmans are Piressen, they are quite similar to Tharians in many respects. Well let's get going."

(Ready to fast forward you bunch to the location/time of competition if you want.)

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Brian actually appreciates Nash's aloof/macho attitude.

Rocky watches Nash approach and raises an eyebrow at how cool a cucumber this bat is. "Better early than late." the teen boy says, eyeing Nash as though trying to size him up. "I'm Rocky Lockman." he introduces, watching Nash.

Amy is trying to read Rocky, but... even Rocky isn't sure how he'll react one way or another if Nash either remains calm or gets fanboy on him. So Amy decides whatever Nash does, she'll help him from there.

Gerard Kimble says, "I have not been vague on purpose, ma'am. Frankly, money is it. You are here. You are a casino. Those two facts are enough for anyone to be interested. Why? Is there a reason we should take particular interest?"

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Lucky winces a little inside at Elena's little oopsie of missing that Billy already offered to tag along and why.  He's a bit to empathic to be the kind to smile when others falter, but there is a side of him that's smirking inside that a member of the "infallible" "super genius" Blissian race can make simple mistakes.  He's bitterly aware of a great deal of put-downs to his own race, so he'd love to see a Barakian pull a muscle while trying to lift...  No he'd probably wind up feeling sorry for the poor dear and assure him that it was an awkward angle to lift from.  Or act like nothing happened.

"Thanks for tagging along, Billy," he says moving to exit, "I'm sure you'll be a big help.  Let's do get going.  I imagine they're quite busy setting up, but will be in no mood for business once the fun starts, so the sooner we get there, the better."

Walter keeps a more masculine distance between himself and his employer than Miya does for hers.  He may be half asleep, but he's laughing inside at the Blissians.  One, they're a bunch of babies that need constant supervision from a tougher race like the Dekshar.  Two, their one tough guy, Billy, claims to know Piressan culture.  That's like a white college professor claiming he knows the Hispanic ghettos well enough because he knows black culture.  Both are laughable.  He'd be slightly more impressed if he were present when Billy claimed to be married to one.  And lastly, the infallible Blissian doctor totally fumbled with one of her own kind.  Yeah, he IS one to smile when another fumbles.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Having finished a supply run to Barrak to gather more ammunition for his various guns, he lands at the Tharian colony; the Rush settlement on Planet X, a planet that seemed to be getting a good bit of publicity as of late.  Landing in the port, he steps off the Mjilnor and out to the actual city, the city seeming to be abuzz about something.

He hears two random people passing by talking about some competition being held by Rocky Lockman, a known figure from his neck of the woods.  He'd been hired by Nick Lockman to do a few assassination missions in the past.  However, he knew little to nothing about Rocky, except for the fact that he was Nick's boy.

I guess I better look into this.  It might prove to be fun.  He said, heading to where this competition was to take place.

At Kimble's response to Jacqueline, the opossum looks him over very carefully, being quiet for a moment before giving a calm smile, "You should take a particular interest, Mr. Kimble, because the Diamant Casino is one of the fastest growing names in the industry... and is now set to be partnered with the Lockman company. I believe this is a venture that will be more than worth it."

She keeps her eyes on him as she says this, watching behind her mask of a smile to get a read for Kimble's reaction to what is clearly an acceptance.

Marcus listens to all that CHAD has to say, folding his arms and not looking disbelieving so much as looking perplexed. He scratches the fur between his ears.

"The Miss sure knows how to pick 'em..." He mutters to himself before turning his attention more fully to CHAD, "Okay, so you've been trained in simulations. That makes a little more sense. I shouldn't have to tell you, though, that actual experience can't be substituted. You may know a lot of stuff, but you don't really KNOW all that much. Not yet, anyway. Lucky for you, this'll be a little bit lighter than fighting in a proper military..."

The opossum looks CHAD up and down, his expression seeming more relaxed, but still heavily curious, "I've got one more question about your origin, Chad. You're obviously not human and you keep talking about yourself as a unit... Even though I can't look up your work history, seeing as you don't have any, I'd at least like to know who made you so that I can check up on that. If you get some sort of bug, then I'll wanna know who to check up with. Understood?"

Nash keeps his thumbs on the insides of his pants pockets, but still keeps his hands fully visible as Rocky introduces himself. When he IS introduced, the bat can't help but move a hand up to his glasses and adjust them at hearing the name directly linked to the person, even if he already knew that it would be.

"Rocky Lockman..." Nash nods and gives a shifting look back to Brian, "... I was told that's who you are... but I wanted to say hello myself... Nice to meet you." He gives a light looking around, "So... uhm... no one's said anything about what this competition is gonna to be... What do you usually do?"

Mentally, Nash's mind is a little incoherent. He keeps repeating his own words to himself, making sure he sounds right, and also keeps mentally going over in his head that he's actually talking with Rocky Lockman right now.

There's the standard events which always included drinking contests, fist fights, arm wrestling and stuff like that. But as the term "surprise" indicates, I don't reveal the surprise events until the time comes for the events to take place." he smiles proudly.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

(Team Bliss fast forwards a bit to be at the Rocky competition)

Billy shows up with Elena, Lucky and their respective bodyguards. He, of course, entertained the group with music on their way to the place. Brian is there at the entrance, guarding it. The guy is sitting on the steps all casual-like and notices the two Blissians, a Gynomb, a Deksharr and a Wolf all walking towards him. Upon seeing Billy, he raises an eyebrow.

"....well hello, Mr B." he addresses the Blissian with a surprized smile crossing his face. "Didn't expect to see you here. Is... Angel coming?"

Billy nods as he pulls his hood back to let his ears stretch out a bit. "I'm hoping she'll be early, but knowing her, she might be fashionably late. Not that she's on any of our schedules." Remember how his accent was pure grammatical correctness before? Yeah, his accent has magically switched to Tharian in a heartbeat. Well... as Tharian as a foreigner can sound. "Allow me to introduce.. this is Elena and her friend Miya. Over here is Lucky and his friend Walter." he then faces the others. "Everyone... this is Brian."

Brian smiles at them all.

It's around then Leon would be able to see the small gathering at the entrance to the competition. Just his luck that not one, but TWO Blissians would be at the Piressen competition. The only odd thing is that there is only one Deksharr between the two of them.

"Nonono!" he whispers in a panic, wanting her to be allowed to continue sleeping.

At this point, what Nono does next depends on whether Driz wakes.  If she stays asleep, he would whisper to Joe the "Odd sleep" bit in the fae race thread.  He'd then ask if T'Shock or Joe would be willing to carry Driz's ship because it's a bit too heavy for him to lug around and keep up with them.

If she wakes, he would apologize to her and ask her to set the ship to hover and continue her nap inside.  He would assure her that he wouldn't let her miss any of the fun.

"A fool and his money are soon parted."  That's the extent of Walter's "loyalty" to Lucky.  While Walter might fight to defend his current source of income, he's not sticking his neck out for the guy.  He was hired as a guide.  Nothing more.  He checks out Brian and gives a nod when introduced, then notices Rocky chatting with a bat.  A smile crosses his face as he considers the fun competitions that are sure to commence soon and considers entering himself if he can get away with it.

Lucky gives a bright smile and a wave when introduced, still thinking happy thoughts on Billy's lovely family when the topic is brought up and reveling in the man's music from the trip.  While many may consider his body language as sissy as a Blissian's he tends to be rather forward when it comes to what he says.

"Nice to meet you, Brian," he says, "I can see why you were picked to watch the entrance.  Wow you're intimidating!  I bet you even have the ear of Rocky himself!  I was wondering if maybe you could arrange a meeting for us?  We've a great idea for helping this colony along that I'm sure he'll love.  But I'll bet he's very busy right now, so maybe first we could pitch in with the competition preparations to help free up some of Rocky's time.  Think he'd go for that?"

Making his way through the colony, he came across the place where the piressian competition was to take place, but a familiar odor ran across his nose that made his midnight black fur stand on edge a little.  Blissians....It would be his luck and even at this distance, he recognized Billy the Bard.  Of course, there was only one way to get into the place, so he had to pass by the two Blissians and the Deksharr to get in.

Walking towards them, he said nothing, biting back a growl as he walked past them without as much as a blink or a word to any of them.  Blissians always left a foul taste in his mouth and he hated the Deksharrs that guarded them almost as much.  He couldn't say that any ally of the Blissians was his enemy, mainly because he would have more enemies than he could ever hope to deal with.  However, anyone that guarded a Blissian was, but that had a more personal touch.

As he walked, he merely looked for a place to hear what this was all about and to spectate.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

When she is made to fill out the paperwork for the partnership, followed by a customary handshake, Jacqueline is sure to check over the documents carefully. After assuring herself that there are no hidden costs or agreements, she smiles in satisfaction and wishes Mr. Kimble well as he leaves the ship. He's escorted out by one of the opossums that had been keeping watch over the door and the proceedings. The other opossum, after Kimble leaves, gives a call to the security chief to tell him that the meeting has finished.

After the rep leaves, Jacqueline sits quietly in the conference room.  She looks towards the innocuous cupboard kept in the corner and strokes the underside of her muzzle.  Having formed a partnership with one of the most powerful groups in the settlement was certainly something worth celebrating over, but things weren't finished yet.  Once business was properly underway, she'd get an impression of just how big a cut the Lockmans would be getting out of her.  For now, she could only theorize.  Dealing with Kimble had also put a strange taste in her mouth.  An uncomfortable feeling that she just couldn't shake.

However, she reasoned, any gamble worth making always has an equal measure of risk in comparison to the payout.

Stepping out briefly, she tells the remaining opossum guard to keep his position and not let her be disturbed as she makes a call from the conference room.

When CHAD gives Marcus the name of the company that developed him, the opossum smiles in thanks, glad to have what seems like a solid answer to check into.  At the moment, of course, he can't check up on the company to see what's happened with CHAD, but at least he feels like the playing field is being leveled.
He also seems satisfied that CHAD has learned his lesson about following orders.  As he's about to give CHAD more specific details of his duties for the day, a device on his hip beeps.  Picking it up, he has a brief conversation with the creature on the other line and nods before looking at CHAD and putting the device down.

"Well, it looks like we're going to have more free hands today than I expected.  Your duties shouldn't change, though.  Now that I've got a rough idea of what you're capable of and what your history is, I think I can start giving you orders, proper." He stands up straight, narrowing his eyes, "Your duties for today, as I mentioned earlier, are going to consist largely of security patrol.  That means that, with your partners, you're going to be moving around the ship itself and the immediate surrounding area, looking for possible security breeches.  This will also give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the ship, and it'll do you more good than just a standard tour."

The opossum smiles at the end of his explanation and he's about to ask CHAD if he has any questions when the communication device at his hip beeps again. With a sound of frustration, he takes the device again and has a short, clipped conversation which leaves him with a look of surprise as he looks at CHAD.

"Huh... just when we were getting into the meat of things... Chad, there's been a slight change of plans for you today.  The Lady of the ship has some designs of her own.  She's requesting that you report to the Main Conference room to speak with her. I know we've been putting a lot of information in your head today about your duties, but she runs this ship.  When she asks us to do something specifically, that takes top priority.  I can take you to the conference room myself, since you're probably not familiar enough with the ship yet." He looks CHAD over carefully, "I know this is sudden, but little things like this happen.  Do ya have any questions from what we've talked about here so far?"

Nash can't help but shift a bit as Rocky talks about fist-fights and drinking contests as being standard.  From his research, he expected as much from a competition designed for this crowd, but it's quite different for him to hear it from the horse's mouth, to speak.

Still, he nods, putting on a light smile, "Heh... I guess they're called 'surprise' events for a reason..." He adjusts his glasses before assuming his aloof posture again, "I just thought... getting a little direct info might help me prepare myself... Still... well, this should be fun?"

Mentally, his mind is brimming with concerns: Fighting. My combat training is minimal. What do I do if the competition becomes that? I have a number of skills... I am not entirely unathletic, and I am here to see what I can find more than really trying to win this... but winning will make it so much easier for me to get closer. I need to try, but... Fighting? How will I do that?

Nash's ears twitch as he hears more people coming to join them, realizing that the competition will probably be starting sooner rather than later. Still, he keeps himself focused on Rocky for as long as he has the boy in conversation.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

When they reach the location of the Lockman competition, Elena waves happily to Brian upon their getting close.  She's especially happy that he seems to be friends with Billy as well. If someone as nice as Billy is his friend, then he must be quite trustworthy.

Cheerfully, she waves again at Brian as they're properly introduced, "Hello there! It's so very nice to meet you!"

At Lucky's words about talking with Rocky, she stays mostly silent, letting Lucky do the talking as this is clearly more his area of expertise than hers. Still, she can't help talking up in agreement with him, "Yes, if there's anything we can do to help in return for talking with Mr. Rocky, we would greatly appreciate it!  Though, I'm sorry, but we're not gonna be joining in the competition itself, if you're wondering.  Is that okay?"

Meanwhile, Miya is looking around, in light alert.  She gives a nod of greeting to Brian when they're introduced, but her eyes and ears mainly pay attention to their surroundings.  She knows that it takes all sorts to come to these kinds of events, and it's nearly impossible for a Blissian to walk around unnoticed. Those two facts make her keep a closer proximity to Elena and keep her hand ready.

She sees the half-breed wolf as he walks past them, watching him as he does so, but otherwise not noticing anything about his attitude that he doesn't reveal through his body-language.

What she doesn't mention is that proportionally, her kind live a VERY long time. Most creatures her size last a year, maybe 5 at best. But her kind can live to 70 or even 80 years! But then... details.

She hears Nono's offer and nods. "Oh. OK. Sure." she flitters into her ship, that jingle sound happening. The ship hovers, autofollowing Nono as Drizzeleaf naps inside.

T'shock is on autofollow also. This time it's HER turn to take backseat to Driz rather than the other way around.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Rocky nods to Nash. "Yeah. It'll be fun. I aim for that, so people come back for more." he says with a smile. He looks in the direction of the doorway. "...more people? Already?" and heads to the door, not indicating whether Nash should or shouldn't follow. That's up to Nash.

Brian was about to answer the group when he notices Rocky walking up and says, "....well here's Rocky. Go ahead and talk with him."

Obviously, this means Leon would see Rocky showing up and being announced by Brian.

Billy lightly bows courteously to Rocky. Rocky gives him a smirk. He loves Billy, though Billy intimidates the boy a little... mostly due to the fact Rocky has a crush on the guy's daughter. Even if he realizes she's out of his league in age and status. He looks and sees another Blissian. His smile is becoming a little brighter.

------

Amy contacts Nash, "Follow him. Seems we have some other interested parties. And another Blissian."

Joe would figure if finger snapping woke them up, then grabbing her would do the job in a much more unsettling manner.  What's a bigger shock, snap noise or waking up to 'oh crap huge person's got me'?  "I can imagine the coffee sales, though standardized cup sizes would mean not as much of a jump in business as some would hope."   Espresso the size of your head?  Closer to size of your closet in some cases there.

"Though I am curious.  If someone with enough credits to throw around like they already are is involved, I'd think they would have already either fixed their ship by now.  Or want it left the way it is to examine for any remaining evidence."

Joe could be wrong, but if he is he'll find out via another exposition of the 'you should have known this already Joe' variety for something not listed anywhere.  Few methods of information gather are faster than giving someone an opening to correct you however.

"Good point, Joe," Nono says, "Though from what I've heard about the Barakians, there's a good chance that they staked their entire available capital on the bounty, leaving them with no funds left for repairs."

He merely glanced around, looking around at all the people that had shown up for this mysterious competition.  He had no interest in participating in it, but it definitely had his full attention for the time being.  His body language didn't show any agitation as he walked and found a spot to lean against the wall, folding his arms over his chest.

It was as close to a greeting that anyone so far had been able to get from him, a mere nod to the young Rocky as he walked around, the half breed listening intently as to what was involved in this competition.  Things he knew that he could handle, given his profession, but again he wasn't going to take part.

At CHAD's response, Marcus raises a brow, keeping his pace in walking as he tries to determine exactly how to best respond to that. Finally, he simply says, "Uh, well, they're not actual designs, y'see. It's just a turn of phrase. It just means that she's got plans."

He gives a nod, seeming satisfied with his own answer and not saying much else as he leads CHAD along the way.

Before long, and without further interruption, they reach the conference room. The opossum keeping guard can't help but look curiously at CHAD before snapping to attention as Marcus tells him to alert Ms. Diamant.

A calm voice issues from the door when it's opened, "Let him in, please."

Once CHAD is ushered in, the opossum guard goes back to his post, as does Marcus, leaving CHAD alone with Jacqueline. She smiles politely at him as she sits at the corner of the table, "Hello, Chad. I hope your day's been going well so far? I apologize for interrupting things, but I have a task in mind that I'm sure would be perfect for you." She leans back in her chair and laces her fingers together, "Chad, how do you feel about having the position of Bodyguard for today?"

Nash's ears twitch at Amy's message to him, and he can't help but utter, "A Blissian? Is it the same one as before, or...?" He shakes his head to push himself out of his thoughts and keep his composure as he does as he's asked and follows Rocky to see the others.

Upon seeing the small gathering of unfamiliar others there, Nash takes a small step back, not wanting to draw much attention to himself. He eyes the new Blissian curiously, however, and his eyes drift over the others to figure out who they are and if they'll be competing or not. At seeing Billy, though, the bat immediately looks away, laying his ears back.

So, there are two Blissians now, and one of them knows me! Well, he kind of knows me, at least. He was extremely friendly then! But... is he competing? I didn't think Blissians would ever be interested in something like this. From what I've read, this almost seems like the polar opposite of what a Blissian would want to be involved in. Maybe these two are different from others? Need to watch them... but I need to watch Rocky too. Stay calm. This can work.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

When Rocky comes up to them, Elena's eyes brighten up and she gives a happy, traditional bow in greeting. As Lucky explains the situation to Rocky, she rocks back and forth gently on her feet before nodding in agreement and speaking up, "This settlement really does need a good hospital! There are so many people in need in this area... We'd really appreciate your support!"

She smiles eagerly, clearly more than happy to help with anything Rocky might ask them to help with in return. She still doesn't say too much, however, as Lucky undoubtedly better understands how to best present this idea to folks like Rocky.

Miya gives a nod to Rocky as he comes up and regards him lightly, seeing the look he gives to Billy and then to Elena. She can't figure out if it's one of familiarity or interest in the Blissians themselves.

The Deksharr still maintains a general air of alertness as greetings are exchanged, looking around to see what others come to this competition. The bat trying to hide off to the side doesn't go unnoticed by her, but he also doesn't seem to be much of an immediate threat or interest.

So tell ya what... I'd be more than happy to carve out some property for you and a bunch of other blissians to just build one as you please. You guys seem to just generate resources. That said, Team Joe (That would be T'shock, Drizzeleaf, Nono and, of course, Joe) are arriving on the scene where it's all gonna go down.

Joe wonders how taking up the task offered by someone with the logic of 'I'll pay you dead or alive, but if you kill them I'll *censored* you up'' in their offer will turn out.  The mere offering of such in the first place would indicate they are someone believed to be 'worthy of death'.  Of course, questioning the finer details of an employers moral logic can frequently lead to stretches of unemployment (a reason it was fortunate Joe primarily dealt in repairs, modifications, emergency cybernetics surgery, misc.  while the bounty thing was sorta just there).  Not to mention thinking about it too hard gets Joe thinking about his own inconsistent and at times hypocritical values.

"It may be possible we'll be filled in once we meet up, but anyone else find it interesting that there's a reward for collecting the suspect but no mention at all regarding recovering the undisclosed stolen property?"  Sure, maybe there is the logic that they can torture it out of the suspect once they have them, but if it was so important they'd have said something.  Unless they don't want anyone else to find it.  Or Maybe Joe's just being too paranoid again instead of properly paranoid.

Jacqueline looks at CHAD carefully as he responds, keeping her own position, but shrugging, "Not too surprising. Always compliant. That's one of the reasons I knew you were a good investment, Chad. Still, I wanted to hear your thoughts on the offer, if you had any. But it looks like that's all ready settled." She leans forward in her desk and speaks clearly, "There's a competition going on today and it was suggested that I take a look at it. The people running this competition, the Lockmans, are going to be very important to all of us in this company. The problem? It might be filled with some people of... lesser standards. I'd simply like you to go with me and ward off any potential riffraff."

As she says this, she stands herself up and smiles at CHAD, folding her hands behind her back, "That's it for the 'briefing' on this little venture, but I would like to make sure you understand two things before we go. First, don't publicly announce who I am or otherwise draw a lot of attention to the fact. I don't want to be a spectacle. Second, try not to kill anyone during this, okay? Not unless they try to kill me or you. We don't need that kind of press. Is all of this understood, Chad?"

Nash's ears lower ever more as he practically feels Billy looking at him, debating whether to be rude and pretend he doesn't know the Blissian, or to give kindness where kindness is due.

Of course, he can't help but give a faint, if nervous, smile to him in return before turning his attention to Rocky. He can hear a great deal of the conversation and the offer and tilts his head at the overall reaction.

Ya know, this Rocky isn't nearly as scary or standoffish as I thought he'd be. He's actually surprisingly friendly, and he's even MORE friendly to the Blissians! I was sure he would be someone extremely hardened and even rude to people passing through, but I was wrong... That's a good thing, right? Or maybe it's just too early to tell? Not letting my guard down. Staying cautious... He seems really easy to trust.

His attention is somewhat diverted at seeing 'Team Joe' arrive on the scene, having never seen a collection of travelers quite like that before. He doesn't know WHAT to think, aside from the fact that they look like they're on a mission themselves.

Thoughtfully, he adjusts his glasses and stays ever quiet.

Elena's eyes widen in glowing joy as he hops at Rocky's response and gives Lucky a tight hug before doing the same to Rocky, an act which causes Miya to flinch with concern as she's too late to do anything to deter her employer's excitement.

The Blissian backs away with a rosy tint to her cheeks beneath her fur, "S-sorry! I'm just... Oh, I'm SO happy! You're really going to help? That's the greatest thing I could have ever hoped for! Thank you! Thank you so much!." She gives a bow again as she steps back a pace to be polite, "What Lucky says is absolutely true. I'd be more than happy to heal any injured that you have after, well, the event today. Though I hope..." She pauses before she tilts her head at Rocky with honest curiosity, "Is this really going to be a dangerous event today, Mr. Rocky?"

For Miya, the sight of the others isn't something that she's all too thrilled about. They clearly look familiar to her and she can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. At the very least, she's keeping a watch on them from the corner of her eye, giving more of her complete attention to Elena and the one's they're currently dealing with.

Rocky looks at Lucky with a "wha?" look when he calls Rocky shrewd. "Shrewd? Pfff.." he leans over to Brian and whispers, "What's that mean?" Brian chuckles and whispers back, "Clever." Rocky ohs. "It's common sense to build a hospital when you can afford it. It's STUPID to turn down more or less free labor and materials to build a hospital. Any 2-year-old knows if someone gives you a band-aid when you are hurt, you take the gift."

Rocky genuinely blushes and gives a helpless smile when Elena hugs him. His smile being much like a little boy who just got tucked in by his mom. When she pulls back, he's looking bashful. "P-please... Elena. Just call me Rocky. Mister is more for older... yeah, older people. I'm like... still just a kid m'self." he admits.

Amy telepaths to Nash, <Many folks have a soft spot for Blissians. Rocky, however, from what I understand, is a softy who wants to make people think he's a tough guy. Sometimes he tries too hard, but I'm sure you aren't in any serious danger with him. Especially with Blissians for him to "behave" around.>

Rocky spots the newcomers and says with a chuckle, "Heh. Looks like everyone wants in before I'm even ready. Well... you all may as well come on in."

As he leads the way in, he looks at Elena. "To answer your question, Elena, yes. Some events are dangerous. But you gotta understand... it's our way. Our life. Especially the guys from my culture. We like wrestling, fighting... to put it in a way that might help you not think it bad, a lot of the rough stuff we Piressens do is, well, a way of feeling whole. For many of us, our entire role as the male gender depends on these rough-and-tumble activities..." his nerdar is going off and he knows he's the one making it do so. This needs to be corrected. "It's a thing we gotta do, but I make sure nobody gets permanently hurt... OK?"

He looks over his shoulder at the recent arrivals. "Party's not ready yet, folks... just keep your pants on and things'll be moving along shortly."

He had found himself a nice little spot near the door to watch the festivities that he was hoping would start soon as he was getting slightly impatient.  He noticed that the hooded person had pulled his hood down, showing that he was a blissian.  Just what he needed...another rabbit.  Though even at that distance, he looked ever so slightly familiar.  Then again, to him they all looked the same anyway.

Damn rabbits everywhere.  That one looks like he knows me.  He muttered to himself, shaking his head a little bit before going back to waiting for the action to start.  He knew that the blissians had a lot of backers, so he had to keep his head down in this area or at least keep his propensity for agitating them in check, lest he find himself in a situation that even he couldn't fight his way out of.

Between the help of the many who showed up and Rocky's already hired help, the event gets set up in record time. Rocky has the people take their places and soon, there are people from all over town lining up to enter. The first competition is marksmanship. How good is anyone with a gun?

(By now, CHAD will have arrived. Anyone wishing to partake in sharpshooter competition, lemme know. Otherwise, you are relegated to DBZ-style sidebar commentary.)

T'shock SO joins in this competition. She doesn't care about being hired by Rocky or not (Though that could look very nice on her resume), but does want to see how she measures up to all these supposed "best" of this town who think they can compete.

Drizzeleaf decides to sit to the side and watch.

On the side of logic not having to do with expecting personal failure, it would be somewhat easier to follow up on any leads realized when not in the middle of a contest.

Billy is comfortably seated with the others, a bright smile on his face as he lets an ear flop. Upon hearing Lucky's comment, Billy nods and says, "From the looks of her, bounty hunter. So she's got to be decent at least." and when T'shock shows her stuff only to be outdone by Gmork, Billy nods. "She did well. But no matter how good you are, there's always someone better."

If going to have to keep track of all these people and names he's meeting today isn't he?  Thank goodness for backscroll augmented memory.  He also can't help but wonder, after the latest challenge announcement if the one following this will be 'now! bob for apples in the pool!'.  Okay, that probably won't happen.

"Well, nice to meet you all as well.  Is having someone hold their head under the water for them considered cheating?  Probably I guess."

What do you mean they didn't hold their breath 60 seconds!  They didn't come up for air in 70 seconds! It shouldn't matter if they were unconscious and half drowned, this contest is totally rigged!

"Thank you, thank you," Nono replies, "Name's Nono, and this is Joe.  I'd love an opportunity to repair or upgrade whatever it is you're traveling about in, kupo.  And for a limited time, I'm only charging for parts costs."

"Nice to see there haven't been any injuries yet," Lucky says, "Let's hope people don't push themselves beyond what they can handle.  Appreciate the offer, Nono, but I don't think my ride needs any maintenance or upgrades at the moment."

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Billy chuckles from Nono's enthusiasm. "Confident..." he says of Nono. "You may look at my ship, but I'll be surprised if you can find it in need of any upgrade for cheaper than, say, 100 credits."

T'shock huhs. "I dunno the rules."

Rocky says, "If you fall unconscious, you are disqualified."

T'shock says, "...guess that answers that."

The competition allows for simply dunking your head, but a few take advantage of the pool and go all-in with a dive. T'shock ponders. "Ya know... that looks refreshing..." and she hands her things over to Joe. "Hold on to this stuff while I take a dive."

She walks over and dives in! She begins holding her breath with the other competitors. After 20 seconds, people start popping up. One by one, competitors get eliminated from the breath-holding part of the competition. T'shock lasts a good 50 seconds before she knows she just can't physically stand it any more and pops up, gasping for air. This makes her one of the better ones, at least.

(Money translation: 100 credits = 1,000 US dollars)

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

"I suppose it would entirely depend on if it was based on required upgrades, or convenient upgrades.  A Gyroscopic cup holder on every chair can add up.  But I expect you're right Billy."  Of course a Blissian's ship will have the most advanced weapons system possible already installed, and need no upgrades to deal with combat any better that it already can.  This narrative comment was borderline spoken out loud, but Joe possesses some slight shreds of tact.

Joe then finds himself the proud temporary owner of Barakian possessions.  Sure, he hasn't given a terrible impression yet.  But he somehow doubts he's got the most trustworthy face in the sector.  "I expect tickling the competition would also be grounds for disqualification, if more than one person went in at once anyways.  Though that would probably be the most hilarious thing to hear on the sports news.  'Contestant Disqualified in tickling scandal!  Many hospitalized!'"

Oh look, Joe's getting his sense of humor back.

"Fantastic!" Nono says, pounding his fist into his upturned palm, "I'll get on it, right away, kupo!  Where would I find your illustrious ride, then?"

He and Lucky both cheer on T'Shock.

"Impressive time, Miss."

"Kuporific!"

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Thankfully, Joe has tact! Yay! And humor to top that off. Which Rocky finds funny and thus laughs.

Billy gives Nono directions to his vehicle.

T'shock snorts (the laughter type of snort. Not the distinguished elf type of snort) from Joe's comment. Then nods to Lucky. "Thanks."

She's also drenched and has the whole "clinging shirt" thing going on. She undoes her ponytail and starts wringing her hair.

After the breath-holding competition, Rocky has a racing competition. Foot-race. T'shock, of course, partakes. She looks at Joe. "Not planning on partaking in any of the competition?"

(OOC: Best way for most sane people to deal with combat is to not be in it in the first place. So far as that is concerned, Billy's ship is good to go. But then, Blissians tend to not think of weapons as an upgrade so much as a downgrade. Just like most people would consider putting 1000 pounds of paperweights on their vehicle to be a downgrade. You have to be willing to use the weapon for the weapon to matter.)

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Joe succeeds in not staring at T'Shock's clothing situation...  With his organic eye at least.  So many features listed on commercially manufactured cybernetics, but none of them seem to list 'stare without being obvious about it' as a bullet point.

"Well, one of the original reasons I wasn't joining in was so I could look into our job while the competition went on.  But I think that's a bust.  If they pull a 'reverse engineer this stoleneeer, FOUND (honest) technology for us fastest' challenge out of nowhere, then maybe I'll give it a go.  Competing just for the sake of it isn't always my thing."

Joe is actually counting on there being a 'Nice try' award or something reality will mock him with.  It makes it more likely T'Shock will get it this way.

Re: Chapter 01: The Lockman Ploy

Lucky offers up a towel, but he's a bit on the short side.  Nono's even more on the short side, but he can fly, so he snatches the towel and flies it up to T'Shock.

"I heard mention of a job," Lucky says, "What is it that you do?"

"I'll be looking at that ship now, kupo," Nono says.

Once T'Shock has the towel he zooms off to where Billy indicated.
