Re: Characters
You get to choose one occupation for every 4 years starting at age 17. For each "term" you get between 3 and 5 skill points + 1 or 2 secondary activity points depending on what career has been chosen. At the end of each term a d10 is rolled to determine the start of the war. If the roll is equal or less than the number of terms, then you get one more term during wartime, in which (if not already a member of the military or some occupations such as politician or government agent) you are drafted and receive double the skill points but no secondary activity.
As a player, your character can have almost any sort of background. They could be Army, Navy, Airforce or Marine. They could be a University professor, an entertainer, a mechanic, a criminal, a paramedic, a member of the idle rich, a doctor, journalist, student, or Attorney. It's really up to your choices and the luck of the dice.
If you have 2nd ed. make up a character but roll using the online roller. Otherwise, give me some idea of the career path you'd like to take and I'll see what I can do. I also need you to go to the dice roller and roll your stats: 2d6-2 for Strength, Constitution, Agility, Education, Charisma and Intelligence. If the total is les than 30, add the different whereever you see fit. The other option is to take 32 points and distribute where you want with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 10 in each. Take your pick, once you roll, you can't go back.
