Re: Roadblock

Gerhard curses the gearshift under his breath and pulls the BRDM up near a wall where the overhanging eaves will allow for some concealment. Hauling on the handbrake, he lets the engine wind down before turning it off. The engine gallops on a bit with post ignition and then falls silent.

"Here we are. Don't forget these are a proud people, they respond well to courtesy. They are not under NATO command, and I'm not sure of their longterm goals, but they are friendly and helpful after their suspicions are allayed."

Gerhard  settles his weapon on the seat and climbs out the roof hatch, before leaning back in and grabbing the LMG. He nods and smiles at various people among the crowd, then clambers down the battered hull.

Sebastian smiles and joins the partisans clumped together on the roof behind him in waving at the children as the BTR enters the village.

Perhaps I can get a game of football going...

He calls into the interior of the APC,

"We're at the village. These people seem much friendlier!"

Katka makes sure her pack is secure before putting that and her webbing on. She slings her rifle and opens the side hatch again, stepping out amongst the crowd of excited children. The fact that their parents let them come out is most reassuring. She kneels down, puts on a smile, and greets them with an open hand. "Vitayu. Hello."

Tanya looks to Cam, "Looks like we'll finally get a chance to try out some of those civvie close we picked up Lootenant!"

Re: Roadblock

Marcus was always wary of things in general, and it was no different when they arrived in the partisan village.  He dismounted only because he hated being trapped in that metal coffin they called a vehicle.  He did his best to scan the village for signs of anything from how many men, woman, and children there were to possible defensive positions for the villagers and for his team should they need to move that way, as well as ambush points.  Most people thought that people would not attack when there were children around, though most had not seen action in the Middle East where it often seemed as if they deliberately killed woman and children in their actions.  You could never fully understand the thinking of another culture.  Then again maybe it was because Marcus would've sacrificed the women and children himself if need be too.  He wasn't a psychotic killer, just a realist, and maybe a little on the paranoid side.

Re: Roadblock

After the vehicles stopped Brown was last to exit the metal casket. Not that he liked it inside, more because his spot behind the weapon was the farthest from the hatch.
With his weapon in his hand he crawled out and stayed on top of the BRDM. Sitting on the small cupola.

From his high spot he scans the surrounding area for defensive position, strongholds and moreover a good spot for the vehicles to be out of sight.

In his head he starts to think of things that need be done. He looks to see if he can spot one of the officers, when he sees one he calls out.

If Sebastian will help her, she gets next to or behind Don and begins to get him out of the vehicle and on to the ground where he could spread out a little and be more comfortable laying down out there.

"Of course, Sgt."

Sebastian ducks back into the troop compartment, and, as gently as possible, helps lift and manouver Don to the ground outside.

"No offense, Don, but I wish you were an actual sack of potatoes right now." He says with a wink.

Don trots out of the vehicle, but is almost falling as the blood of his head is emptied after rising too fast. Tanya feels the weight of him when he falls.

"Cheers, lass. Good you have a hand open for me!"

"So, lets see if there is someone nice in the village, should we?"

Don sits on the ground in his suit. Looking around for people to talk to, or benches to sit on.

Re: Roadblock

The next few hours pass with increasing speed as you get to know the locals. At first it's just the children crowding around looking for chocolates and treats, but soon everyone else drops the task at hand to take a look at these strange newcomers.
Verified as Nato, yet armed and equipped for the most part with Pact items, the word "Spetznaz" is often heard whispered from one to another. It's obvious that most believe the group to be special forces on a longe range mission deep into enemy terrority.
Don finds himself stretchered into a nearby residence with Michelle tagging along keeping a close watch as gifts of home made clothing, jars of preserves, and offers of marriage to eligable sons/daughters are made. Although by far the majority of the inhabitants of Ojcow are native Poles there are a handful of other nationalities represented although these tend to keep to the back of the crowd. A smattering of military clothing hi-lights the predominately homespun cloth most wear.

Re: Roadblock

Sebastian removes his pack from the BTR and digs through it until he finds his last tangible link to pre-war, civilian life. He removes the deflated, well-worn Addidas soccer ball and holds it up so that the village children can see it, pantomiming an inflating motion. Hopefully, someone here can pump it up.

"I'm going to try and build some good will with the locals." He says, to anyone in the party who happens to be looking on.

In his crude Polish he addresses the small crowd, "Play football? Now? Need... air. Play football?"

Re: Roadblock

Within moments of Sebastian producing the football, children are scattering in all directions. He couldn't have cleared the area quicker by firing a few bursts from his Uzi!
A short time later and the kids come rushing back, most holding bicycle pumps and the like. A few even clutch at their own balls while one or two hold card collections of football players and a pen.

Seems Sebastian has been recognised...

Re: Roadblock

Katka takes a little time for herself to clean the AK, patch holes in her old clothes, and tailor her dress for a proper fitting. All the while slowly eatting the most divine peach slices from a bottle of preserves she managed to sneak off with. They made her even hungrier but, the itching at her greesy scalp reminded her that she had yet to scrounge up soap and maybe these people had some to spare. So she dug out the small bottles of spices found earlier the day before, and went in search of the women in hopes that her meager donation could get her on the good side.

Tanya will make it a point to bring whatever Don has left, as far as equipment, to where he is being carried to bed down and rest in Michelle's company.  She sets the gear down and says to Michelle, "Maybe we can trade or acquire a real weapon for you so you don't have to carry around my machine-pistol all of the time!  Tomorrows another day," Tanya says before leaving.

She returns to the her APC to retrieve her own gear and looks for Camilla.  If she doesn't find her right away, she'll help off load the gear out of the vehicle before she accepts the 'gifts' from the locals.

In the few hours that pass Brown makes sure the vehicles are moved to a conceiled position. After that he starts working on the guard roster for the vehicles. Although even he feels relatively safe within this little hamlet he feels the vehicles should be protected.

Walking around the village looking for the team members he informs each of them of their duties. While going through the village he also looks out for the german borderguard officer. He'd like to know if there is a place for the team to take quarters.

Re: Roadblock

Sebastian happily autographs the footballer cards he's offered, though none of them are actually his. He takes up one of the many footballs that have appeared and puts on a brief juggling exhibition. Finding it difficult to control the ball in his combat boots, he pauses a moment to remove them. Soon, he's attempting to organize an impromptu match on a grassy sward not far from where the vehicles have been parked.

He yells to his comrades, "Come play! Everyone is welcome!"

Don hears the mess from outside, rising to see what's going on.

"Bloody Hell! You don't have anyone from the best team in the world! Celtics! And I'm immobilized, just you wait!"

Don's head is about to explode, but he lies down with a smile on his face.

Turning toward Michelle he speaks up to her.

"Next to sex there is nothing better than football"

Smiling toward the ceiling from his bed.

"Eh, after whisky as well. Whisky is better!"

He looks dreamingly upwards.

Gerhard is talking to a big Polish soldier and a woman in naval fatigues near a house off to one side.
As Brown walks up he looks past him at the flying footballs and smiles sadly at some memory, and says to the other two there;

"May I introduce Oberstabsfeldwebel Brown of the United Kingdom Heer. This is Kapitan Eryk Czartoryski, formally of the Polish 4101st Special Operations Battalion and up until recently serving with the US 5th Infantry Division." He turns to the woman and says "And this is Leutnant Kommander Mary Finnegan, also of the United Kingdom Heer. Of the three of us, I am the most junior, and Kapitan Czartoryski has a honorary rank."

"While you are here, I assume your people will be bunking with us, it's an 'all ranks' billet." Gerhards smiles remotely, and continues. "This old house has been loaned to us by the locals, who no doubt like to keep all their worries under one roof."

Gerhard shows Brown the old farmhouse, low set and heavy with age.

Brown looked as Dietrich introduced him to the tho officers. He understood enough of what was said to be able to understand that this were two more officers. With this much officers present he thought it wise to give a quick salute, not expecting a sniper to be in the hills surounding the area.

"Warrant officer, first Class, William Brown, A squadron, 22nd regiment, Special Air Services, Royal British Army. He sais in a polite tone of voice, while looking from the big polish officer to the woman wearing a British Navy uniform.

If I may notice ma'am it looks like you have strayed a long way from the seas, what brings an officer in the Royal Navy all the way back here in the land of us landlubbers?"

Re: Roadblock

Mary returned the salute crisply.  The easy manner in which it was offered, combined with the man's calm aura of competence, both reassured her.  It was a feeling all too rare in these dystopian days.

"An ill wind and treacherous shoals, Sergeant Major," she replied.  "Still, one does their duty wherever they are found."  That could be almost insulting Mary realized too late.  The man was an SAS operative, of course he understood duty.  She rose up on her toes for a moment, hands clasped behind her back as if balancing on a heaving quarterdeck.  It was a nervous gesture that had proven itself firmly entrenched despite Mary's efforts to root it out.

"The Polizeioberkommissar has been kind enough to find me accommodations during my stay and the locals are as friendly as one could hope for.  Bit of sticklers where Communists are concerned.  One can hardly blame them," she added.  "Is the rest of your team with you, Warrant Officer?"
