18-20th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
The small circle of sky visible above the clearing the group had camped in shows a clear blue, promising for a pleasant summer's day.  If only the group hadn't been in the depths of the forest, they'd have had a chance to enjoy it more, for beyond the edge of the clearing, the dense canopy of the trees makes the forest dim with just patches of dappled sunlight occasionally breaking through.

Packing up their equipment, the group prepare themselves to leave the camp site, the broken remains of a blasted spider along with trampled grass the only sign of their battle with the arachnids of the previous night.

The equipment that Soupy had carried is redistributed and finally, the group set on their way again, tired, the horses plodding in single file through the forest, following a trail that only Mosstreader seemed able to discern.

The day wears on, the journey becoming tedious through the never ending trees.  Another clearing, brilliantly lit by a shaft of warm sunlight makes a welcome lunch break and the party rests for a half hour as they eat some more of their rations.

Finally, as it starts to get dark, Mosstreader calls a halt again, and with some trepidation, the group rest up for the night.  This time however, the night is peaceful, and the group awake well rested.

Another day of weary travel passes, the group at one point passing through an area of extremely large trees.  Huge towering giants with trunks so massive they would take some twenty paces or more to walk around.  "Tall Trees" comments Mosstreader.  "Druids live here, though I doubt we'll see them."

Eventually, the behemoths of the forest fall behind them, and the forest returns to its more mundane size.  Again, as dusk approaches, Mosstreader calls a halt, and weary from the constant ride through the forest, the group make camp and gratefully turn in.

Another peaceful night passes, and it is with renewed optimism that they restart their journey, buoyed up by Mosstreader's assertion that they should make the edge of the forest by late-afternoon.

Sure enough, shortly after the brief midday break for lunch, the trees start to thin and Mosstreader suggests that they show more caution.  "We are nearing Elven Port and the River Delimbyir.  The forest is more dangerous here as it thins."  He points towards the ground and the party can make out a clear relatively fresh boot print.  Further on can be seen other boot prints.  It is clear that others have passed this way in recent past.

Yv was glad to have had a few days of quiet travel but the stress of always worrying what was around the next corner was clearly getting the young illusionist.  Every now and again, his hand made its way into his bag of holding and held onto something for comfort and at least once the arm of his puppet could be seen as he removed his arm from the bag.

He sighed deeply as their guide warned of possible danger and he realized he wasn't quite sure what to expect from a boot print, "Umm, what sort of danger?  Creatures, bandits, or something even worse?"

Mosstreader shrugs.  "Could be anything that wears boots - but probably hob-goblin" he replies.

She paused to look at the imprints in the ground and frowned. "If that are the only forces to hazard us then i think we will be able to handle such creatures. Still if we can avoid them then i will go along with the group, though i would not mind spilling some hob blood on the grass."

Merrell looked sidelong at the dwarf. "Well Sir Dwarf, I would rather face anything up here in those forests than anything I've heard that lives in the caverns of the underdark your kin calls home.

And as far as burning them down, lets just say you would have quite a few folks that think oterwise.

Re: 18-20th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
Mosstreader leads the group onwards through the thinning trees.  Although they occasionally spot further sign that others have passed this way, they do not encounter any hobgoblins, and it is late afternoon when their horses finally step free from the edge of the trees into relatively open countryside.    Ahead of them, the land slopes gently down towards a wide (75 yards) river flowing swiftly from left to right, the turbulent water of the Delimbyr on its long journey to the south and eventually west to the Sword Coast.  The dying rays from the setting sun sends long shadows of the trees behind them reaching towards the river and glints in reflected shimmers from the low waves on the water's surface.

On the far side of the river, the land starts to rise again, an open barren looking countryside of tough wiry grasses and gorse bushes dotted over the rocky hills.  In the distance, the jagged and grim Greypeak Mountains seem to have a slightly friendly cast with the glow of the sun setting upon them.

However, that does nothing to warm up the looks of the troop of about 500 orcs marching southward on the other side of the river.  Some of the orcs see the party and point and shout, a few even going as far as loosing arrows at the heros, but the range is far too long, and the arrows fall short by a long way.

The leaders of the orcs don’t seem to pleased with the way their troops have wasted arrows. They run quickly to those who’ve shot and begin whipping the offenders. You notice only now that the orcs are being led by a strange group of creatures, basically human in appearance, but with splayed feet and long, skeletal looking hands.  It is almost as if they have only skin-covered bones.  They have pink faces with the skin stretched in a permanent grin, revealing sharp teeth and fangs, long enough to be visible even at this distance.  Somehow, you have the impression that these creatures may not be 100% alive.

Dorn bristles at the sight of one of his ancient enemies, a troop of orcs, ah if he but had 30 of his clansmen with him.  He glances around, from face to face, trying to judge their reactions.

"Ah wonder where they are headed in such a' hurry, ah'm guessin' if they were delayed, and reduced in number, it would help whoe'ver they are on their way to cause trouble".

Yv doesn't seem to immediately spot the creepy undead looking things but initially concerned by the size of the army marching on just the other side of the river.  However, he finally notices the creatures and a shiver runs down his spine.  "Umm, what the heck are those things?  And, any idea what they're doing with an army of orcs?  Think we need to warn someone?"

"Doesn't bode well" grunts Mosstreader.  "The Lich Lords are somehow trapped in the lands beyond the river, but that doesn't stop them scheming and collecting unfortunate souls, be they orc or human, for their nefarious activities."

Merrell spots the liches fairly quickly. He has read extensively on the subject but never thought he would see one in person. Knowing what he does of them and the power they posses he his very glad to be this far away from them.

"I understand your stance good dwarf but with our few numbers and the power of the Lich Lords it would be unwise indeed to confront them."

As the group warily watch the undead looking task-masters regain control their troop of orcs and start them marching southwards again, several of the orcs continuing to peek over their shoulders at the party even as they marched further, before finally disappearing around an outcropping of rock near where the river curved slightly.

Restarting their own motion, Mosstreader also starts to leads the party southwards, following the river on the west side for a little way  till the group see the remnants of old stone docks reaching out into the Delimbyir on their left side. Remnants of several overgrown buildings can also be seen just ahead of them, though the place looks completely abandoned with no signs of modern civilization.

Re: 18-20th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
"Welcome to Elven Port," says Mosstreader. "This is where our ways part, but not until tomorrow. Once long ago this was a city called Elven Port. It was a small dock city of the land of Eaerlann on the Delimbyir. The elves and the humans of Netheril traded with each other, and this was the river port. The river shore south of here once was farmland of the forest elves. But those are ancient tales. The elves - most of them - left long, long ago."

"The opposite shore was settled later by emigrants from Netheril who were dominated by evil mages. There's a magic upon the land east of us that contains these Neth spirits within their own lands. It is an empire of undead, and the monsters who serve them. The Land of the Lich Lords, one calls the opposite shore. By day one sees only the orc slaves and their strange undead minions.  They were not the lichs," he adds glancing at Merrell.   "By night, the lich lords and their undead minions will call you to them. You must do all you can to resist them. If you fail and swim across and reach the other shore, you soon will march for the lich lords in their night army of Zombies."

OOC: Where do you want to camp?  On the docks? Back in the forest? In one of the shells of a ruined building?  What preparations for night are you intending to make?

Re: 18-20th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
Yv gulps deeply and looks at the ranger.  "What are the risks on this side of the river at night?  Are we fairly safe because of the nature of what lies on the other side of the river?"

"I'm just trying to figure out if we should partially restrain or connect the group so that if one falls sway to the call, they won't be able to get far without it being obvious to the rest."

"I'd recommend camping as far as we're comfortable from the river.  Partially because those things creep me out and partially to give the group time to respond if someone does try to make it into the river."

Pausing a moment, he also considers another option.  "Would it be better to press on and get as far as we can from here rather than camping so close to the river?  If we were hours from the river, it would certainly help us to deal with the threat if someone tries to leave."

Re: 18-20th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
"I'd not call any time of day or night that safe along this stretch of the river" answers Mosstreader grimly.  "There are several days journey ahead of you southwards and the land between here and the Shinning Falls is pretty damn dangerous for unprepared travellers" he continues.  "On the one hand, you have the call of the Lich Lords to contend with - the call only comes at night and only seems to affect humans, so you could spend the night with the humans amongst you all tied up...  but on the other hand, there are others unfriendlies in this area, as those tracks we saw earlier showed."

"You could attempt to travel in the High Forest itself, away from the river, but..."  He trails off and shrugs.  "To be honest, you'd probably not survive.  The relatively recently returned elves of the High Forest often shoot first and ask questions later - especially the further south you go.  Even I, who am considered elf-friend, would not travel in the High Forest south of this point."

Glancing towards the river and the now empty far bank he continues somberly.  "Since the elves returned, they have been driving the orcs, hobgoblins, bugbears and other undesirables out from their woods...  with the river and the Lich Lords on one side, and the elves in the High Forest on the other, the goblin kin and their ilk are somewhat hard pressed.  Especially since the Mistmaster and the Druids of Tall Trees pretty much prevent them from escaping northwards as well."

The weatherworn ranger pushes a hand through his long hair then gestures towards the terrain south of them.  "There is a trail heading south on the river bank itself, only a few feet above the water, that is mostly hidden from the rest of the land.   Despite the pressure from the elves, the goblin-kin and so on tend to stay away from the river and skirt the edges of the trees, so with any luck, that trail will be clear."  He shrugs again.  "If it were me, I'd use that riverside trail and travel fast during the day, hope to avoid notice from anything on this side of the river and be past any groups before they spotted me.  At night, you'll probably need to stop and take preventative measures against the call of the Lich Lords - that will be the most dangerous time for you.  You wouldn't want to get caught by a group of bugbears with half the party tied up or trying to swim the river."

"Does this magical call affect us whether we are awake or is it only for the sleeping?  I seem to recall you saying that those that didn't sleep were immune.  If that's true, wouldn't it be better to camp during the day and travel the hidden path at night?"

Yv looks to the others, hoping others have ideas as he's a bit lost by the idea of not being safe from the call and having other threats to contend with at the same time.

"No, I meant those in some sort of magical sleep or unconscious were fully safe.  Likely as not it will wake you.  I've heard the call once myself, and found myself half-way to the river before I was awake enough to manage to stop myself.  Those with a strong will should be able to resist the call."

Still ashamed to admit he had been bested so easily by mere spiders.
