Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
Having watching to be sure the wolf had fled back to where it belonged she sheathed the harpoon back into her quiver and reentered the inn. She looked around for the innkeeper, wondering if he had been brave enough to protect his property.

Seeing the others she walked over to them, "See, told you there were vampires up here. Is there any chance that you can dispel the count and his guards from the vampires charms?, that would make it alot easier to take them out and clear this village from the evil here."

Luc rejoins the group landing gingerly. He sheaths his swords and folds his arms on his chest as he surly looks around the state the tavern is in and says, "well that wasn't much of a challenge. I always thought vampires would be tougher to handle base on the fear and stories that go around."

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
Yv walks in and listens to Luc feeling like they had won a battle or something.

"Luc, look around you. Nothing of the enemy is dead, at least not yet, and one of our own turned on us. The one Elwin has trapped there wasn't even the leader, and you can be sure that Santanico is only a follower of the true power up on the cliff. That power now knows there are hunters below. How would you react to that? I would suspect that if we are here tomorrow night we will meet their true power, and I for one want to never see that. If we are going to do it, we need to do it tomorrow while the sun is up. I would rather die with the sun up than by being a feeder source when they come after us tomorrow night, here or on the road."

Yv moves to Dorn and says, "Dorn, I am glad you managed to sleep some tonight!", the smile returning to Yv's face as he jests about having put the dwarf to sleep to stop him attacking the others. "I think you owe me a drink."

Dorn doesn't look amused by the sleeping comment, but he is in a bad mood, and distracted.  He will motion for the others to come close so he can speak without being overheard.

"When those musicians wake up, anything theh hear or see, those bloodsuckers will know as well, so it was wi' me.  Maybe we can use that.  If we talk about leaving and never coming back at first light, maybe they won't feel threatened and won't put up extra pre-cautions.  If we can make a show of those plans and then one of you can free their minds, we'll wait till the other undead dies and then make our real plans.  I can help you in the daytime, but ah canna face them again at night unless you 'ave a way to protect me from that spell they used on meh, I can tell you, ah had no defense to it, none at all..."

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
As the party re-group in the inn, Elwin nods to Dorn, the dwarf still buy tying up the unconscious, but probably still dominated musicians.  Turning to Merrell, she address his questions.  "Count Rughan was the original vampire here in the valley.  He has been here for centuries.  Thousands of years perhaps."  She sighs and shakes her head slightly.   "This whole village has been cursed by the vampires for longer than anyone can remember."  She turns and gestures towards Ruwald Huthgar, the innkeeper still looking nervously over the bar at his half-destroyed inn and in particular at the trapped vampire.  "The villagers are nothing but cattle to the vampires.  Food and entertainment." Her lip curls in disgust and anger.

Turning back to face Merrell and the other Unknowns that had come closer to listen, she continues.  Her brother at her side listens, but says nothing, keeping vigil on anything that might disturb the delicate line of powdered silver around the trapped vampire.

"The village is cursed in more than one way.   There is some sort of magical blanket laid over the entire valley that prevents people who live here from leaving..."  She frowns, unable to quite describe it to her liking.  "Those people who try to leave almost invariably sicken and die unless they return to the valley.  Visitors generally aren't here long enough for the magic to sink into them and take full effect, so traders can come and go without noticing anything."  Again she glances at Ruwald, shaking her head.  "You may wonder why the locals wouldn't spread the news more widely, seek help from outside, call for adventurers to rid themselves of this vampire menace.   It is because they have learnt their lessons the hard way over many years.  Adventurers here mean reprisals from up there."  She nods towards the ceiling, in the direction of the citadel high above the valley floor.

She glances at her brother momentarily, then back again.  "My brother and I were actually born here.  Our parents braved the vampires wrath and managed to smuggle us out with a trader, literally the day we were both born - before the magic had had a chance to settle onto us.   I won't bore you with our childhood, but let me just say that it was not an easy one.  Many years later, I found my way back here, alone, and tried to find our parents, but they had already paid the ultimate price for freeing us."

Rufus reaches out and touches her shoulder gently for a moment to comfort her, and she closes her eyes briefly before continuing.  "When I first returned here, the Count took a particular interest in me for some reason - apparently I reminded him of some ancient love."  She leans her head and pulls back her collar to reveal two matching scars on her neck - the mark of a vampire's bite.  "Luckily for me, he merely toyed with me, and eventually I managed to break free from his domination and escape.  Also luckily for me, I seemed to be immune to the Curse of the Vale, so I can come and go freely."   She paused again, pulling out her holy symbol and looking at it.  It is a simple disk of gold on a leather thong, the disk embossed with what looks like a bony hand holding a set of scales.  "I've spent many years since, building towards this moment.   I took service in the Church of the Lord of the Dead.  Kelemvor.  All to understand undead better, to figure out how to best confront and defeat them.  I found my brother, who insisted on joining me, and he and I have been here for the last 10 days, sounding the place out and trying to figure out a plan on how to defeat Count Rughan."

She paused, scowling.  "Most of those half-formed plans are out of the window now.  The two vampires that escaped will probably inform Count Rughan of our presence.  We may have yet to deal with more trouble this night!"

"I don't know how many lesser vampires Count Rughan has created, but I suspect it is more than the three down here this evening.  Given what I've discovered about the frequency of attacks on villagers, I'd suspect less than ten.   I also suspect that the Count has some other allies.  I heard that a few years ago, a woman of dark power arrived in the village and took herself willingly to the Count to strike a bargain with him.  A necromancer of some sort."  She pauses to spit, her anger at such a person clearly evident.

"To get to the Castle, we need to either teleport, fly, climb a 1000 foot cliff, or take the road through the woods which meanders several miles around the mountains to climb to the Castle...  And the villagers don't go into the woods because they are 'dangerous'".  She glances over at the innkeeper again, unimpressed.

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
"So basically we are committing suicide by staying here. One real vampire is bad enough. Ten means we need a lot of luck or weapons that can destroy them before they wisp off back to their homes. Do you happen to know how long any vampire that we force into vapour form takes to regain its ability to grow solid again Elwin?" Yv had a broad smile on his face, and his hand was placed gently on the head of Volo and Dolo.

Yv waits for an answer, before saying, "Do you happen to remember the name of the woman? Not something like Gwar was it?" Yv doesn't use the name he is really hoping to hear information on, as he has seen the bite marks on Elwin and now doesn't trust her at all. Saying she is no longer under the control of a powerful vampire was one think, but proving it was another!

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
"The vampires we forced into incorporeal form this evening will need to return to their coffins.  Once they have reached them, they will need hours, hopefully more than the whole night, to recover their strength and return to solidity."  She looks bitter.  "The ones who escaped tonight will need to be dealt with again tomorrow."

She smiles more gently at Yvandel.  "It is not necessarily suicide to attempt to defeat them however... their biggest weapon is, as I believe you have experienced this evening, their ability to dominate.  To force people to do something they would otherwise not.  Like attack their own companions."  She pats a pocket.  "And I have prepared protection against that... one I can share, though it will not last indefinitely, so our attack on the castle will be on a tight time restraint..."

At the mention of the name Gwar, she shakes her head, looking blank.

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
"So... We need to attack in a short time period, up a cliff and against unknown numbers of enemy vampires." Yv states the obvious, hoping everyone sees it will not be an easy task, "Sounds like a job for Luc! Off you go my friend, come back when you've killed them all with your super swords and all that." Yv lets out a little laugh to convey the fact this was a bad joke on his part.

"Seriously, Luc can look after himself with regards getting there, but how many can we get up there by magic? I can't help get anyone there, so that means we would have to remove significant spells from Blondung and Merrell's arsenal for when we get there. I can keep us hidden for a while, if we can get there like Luc. I can block solid people, even hold them in my power perhaps, but not the vapourous kinds. I don't have anything offensive, other than perhaps my sense of humour, and Volo and Dolo here."

With that, Volo comes to the fore and adds with obvious glee, "And I'm as offensive as they get!" Volo seems to be about to prove it, but Yv gently pushes the head down into a relaxed position, as if they puppet is sleeping again, and Yv waits to hear from Merrell and Blondung about their abilities to get everyone up to the top of the cliff.

"I might guess, that while the patrol that questioned us when we arrived..did not seem to be under any influence of another power..i might also guess we should not have that luxury if we go up there. Is there another way into the Keep other then straight up the hill?, and if i am going to be fighting them again i should rather enjoy it be in daylight."

Re: 28th Eleasias (Highsun) 1370 - Year of the Takard
Milo had listened in silence to the sad story of Elwin and Rufus. He nodded at her explanation, registered some key elements and seemed to make mental notes.
"Come dawn, we shall march up to the citadel and deal with the vampires appropriately. You laugh at Luc's swordsmanship, Yvandel --like we all should, mind you-- but in this situation, it might be the right way to destroy all of the vampires... once neutralized, they will have to go to their coffins, which are most likely all in the citadel. There we can put a stake through their hearts."

He considers his options, and adds:
"I can protect us all from the dominating powers of the vampires... but taking us all up there will be tricky. We should not waste forces and resources fighting our way through this forest --who knows what allies the Baron has in it. "
"If none of our mages can take us up there with magic, I can call an ally of the Broken One. They might be able to either teleport us, or fly us up to the citadel. They might ask for a payment in return though."

Milo will load up on protection from evil, spell immunity, death ward, etc. Mobility is not his strong suit, though he could use air walk if needed

"Oh, I am sure my esteemed colleagues could get all of us up there, but that would remove most of our offensive magic as well. I have no wish to be here, you know that, but I won't desert you yet Milo. Luc is more than capable of carry little old me perhaps, if it came to it, but I'd rather not put the strain on him before a good fight. So, perhaps the forest route is the only option. As Ceely says, not without daylight I would insist." Yv wonders how much it would take out of Blondung and Merrell to cast so many Fly spells. It would likely allow them to leave Elwin and her brother behind perhaps...

The innkeeper looks somewhat worried with all this talk about attempting to take on the vampires in the castle high above the valley.  He also seems somewhat petrified about gaseous vampire that is trapped within the circle of protection.

The vampire seems to realise this and starts to gesture for him to approach and break the circle.  Spotting this, Rufus merely puts his hand on his sword and shakes his head, as if to say "don't even think about it".   The innkeeper swallows, and then turns and flees, leaving the inn empty apart from the adventurers.

Rufus turns to his sister.  "I take it this thing can't dominate any of us whist it is in gaseous form?" he asks.

Elwin frowns.  "I think it is more simply the fact that she is trapped inside the circle of protection that is preventing it from using her powers."   She glances around.  "I'm hoping that it is also preventing her from summoning more wolves or other vermin to break the circle..."

She looks at Milo.  "It is going to be a long night - and some of us will need to keep watch here to make sure that this vampire stays trapped...  but perhaps it would be best if those who need to prepare new spells in the morning should try to get some sleep..."

Merrell thought on the situation for a moment and finally chimed in,

He first spoke to their new allies. "Elwin, Rufus. It truly breaks my heart to hear of the hardships of your life and I am sorry that we cam bumbling in and wrecked your careful planning on this night."

Then to the group at large.
"As for what to do next.  I have the Spider Climb spell as well as the Fly spell. And there are, in fact, the Slippers of Spider Climb that Blondung just mentioned in my haversack. They have thus far gone unclaimed. Would anyone like to claim them now?"

"We spell casters should have a plan on what defensive and offensive spells to prepare. We should have a variety since we do not know what creatures will be protecting the vampires. We know they can at least call wolves to their aid. And I think I read they can call bats as well but I am not sure about that."

"And we will need more anti-undead supplies. Elwin, is there a temple here where we can get holy water and other supplies? And because you know more about these vampires than the rest of us, what supplies do you suggest?"

"Ceely, in the morning sun it dies, at least according to Elwin. I suspect the inkeeper knows more about vampires than all of us put together, which probably means we know as much as we ever will. As Merrell says, we need to prepare. As my spells are mainly used for hiding people and disinformation, I will prepare some invisibility spells and other such items to save you from anything but the vampires. As I suspect you won't let me stay here and take back word of your death at the hands of wolves, bats or undead bloodsuckers, I will now go to sleep and see you in the morning." Yv is being very sarcastic about the complete lack of knowledge of the group when it comes to the creatures that are ultimately going to kill them. Leaving the guarding to those best suited, Yv moves to a corner of the room, lifts some tables onto their side and makes a little fortified camp in the corner before pulling Volo and Dolo close to him and falling asleep.

"Luc, I do have the Fly spell available at the moment but not Invisibily. I do, however, have the spell Mirror Image that I can put into the gem. This spell will create 3 to 7 duplicates of you. These images move with you, mimicking your movements, sounds, and actions exactly. Whenever you are attacked or are the target of certain spells there is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead. If it is a figment, that figment is destroyed. Other spells that effect an area, such as a Fireball or the Black Tentacles spell will harm you normally and not destroy any figments. Give em your swords and I will put the spells in place"

While he is getting ready to put the spells into Luc's gem he will give the dwarf the Slippers of Spider Climbing.

Merrell then asks his fellow wizard, "Blondung, do you have the Haste spell that I can copy from you? Or any other spell you might deem worth while on this suicide mission?"

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
OOC: Duration 1 min.(60 rounds)
This spell creates a number of illusory doubles of you that inhabit your square. These doubles make it difficult for enemies to precisely locate and attack you.

When mirror image is cast, 1d4 images plus one image per three caster levels (maximum eight images total) are created. These images remain in your space and move with you, mimicking your movements, sounds, and actions exactly. Whenever you are attacked or are the target of a spell that requires an attack roll, there is a possibility that the attack targets one of your images instead. If the attack is a hit, roll randomly to see whether the selected target is real or a figment. If it is a figment, the figment is destroyed. If the attack misses by 5 or less, one of your figments is destroyed by the near miss. Area spells affect you normally and do not destroy any of your figments. Spells and effects that do not require an attack roll affect you normally and do not destroy any of your figments. Spells that require a touch attack are harmlessly discharged if used to destroy a figment.

An attacker must be able to see the figments to be fooled. If you are invisible or the attacker is blind, the spell has no effect (although the normal miss chances still apply).

Yv listens from his little cubbie hole and wonders if sometimes people even notice his own abilities! If they had, they would have noticed he had used invisibility spells, and one that would protect Luc better than the original spell. Shaking his head, he stops Volo calling out a very sarcastic comment, and tries again to get to sleep. Stupid people, attempting to get themselves killed and him along with it, is the last thought Yv has before he sleeps.

Having discussed some strategies for the morning, the group decide who is going to stay up and keep watch, as the spell casters get their rest...

About a couple of hours after the combat however, Rufus and Lucretia on watch are startled as the trapped vampire suddenly coalesces out of its gaseous form back into a solid being.  It looks distraught as it collapses to its knees, seems to grow old in seconds, skin yellowing, peeling and falling off before the bones slowly crumble to dust.   After only a few minutes, during which time others awaken again, the vampire is no more and merely a pile of dust in the middle of a circle.

Elwin seems a little surprised, having thought it would have taken till the morning, but looks extremely satisfied as well.
