HAPPY CANADA DAY!



Today is not only the 141st birthday of Canada (also known as the Dominion of Canada). It's also the 4th anniversary of when Michelle and I hand-fasting and made a life commitment. (As I put it in layman's terms, "I proposed to her" at Whiskey Cove, no less.)

Recently, Canada was ranked the 10th happiest nation on Earth:

"Canada may sometimes feel overshadowed by its giant neighbor to the south, but a strong sense of national identity and abundant natural beauty help make the sprawling and sparsely populated country one of the world's happiest. Canada also punches above its weight economically, with a huge $1.1 trillion GDP and per-capita that ranks among the world's highest. It also has strong health care and a low crime rate."

Also, MacLean's magazine had a very interesting article comparing Canadians to Americans and found that "After digging through the data, here's what we found: the staid, underpaid Canadian is dead. Believe it or not, we now have more wealth than Americans, even though we work shorter hours. We drink more often, but we live longer and have fewer diseases. We have more sex, more sex partners and we're more adventurous in bed, but we have fewer teen pregnancies and fewer sexually transmitted diseases. We spend more time with family and friends, and more time exploring the world. Even in crime we come out ahead: we're just as prone to break the law, but when we do it, we don't get shot. Most of the time, we don't even go to jail."

Not being Canadian I will not try to get into the symbolism of either the "Pearson Pennant", nor the Maple Leaf Flag adopted in 1965, but I agree with Dave Kendall that the flag that was adopted is far superior to Pearson's design. I will offer my opinion that the Maple Leaf Flag is the most attractive national flag in the world, considering both from a graphic design standpoint and from a historic perspective: it is simple (two colors, very few graphic elements), distinctive (so much so that the use of a square in the middle of a 2:1 flag is termed a "Canadian Pale"), and easy to recognize/recall (once you know that Canada's colors are red and white, and that the maple leaf has been part of the national iconography for the better part of two centuries.)

Ah, to be self-depreciating in the face of good new is a truly Canadian response! Well done!

Bear in mind this ratio is heavily skewed by growth in the top percentile during the same period, which makes such comparisons between the richest and the poorest difficult if not effectively meaningless.

(This is not to say that I enjoy any personal benefit from the rich getting richer, but this is a capitalist country and that is the way of the world, is it not? As my Poli-Sci professor (an American draft-dodger) said about "Trickle-Down economics" the only thing that trickled down to me is the sweat off their noses!" There are other benchmarks that are closer to home and more meaningful, however.)

According to Stats-Can the purchasing power of median incomes (that is, middle-class families) has grown modestly since 1970 (in real 2005 dollars adjusting for inflation, after taxes). Which means that the average Canadian family has not lost any ground but in fact gained it in the same time period.

Historically, single-parent families headed by women were and are still at the lowest economic rung. However, they gained serious ground since 1980:

"The median income for lone-parent families headed by women in 2005 amounted to $36,765, still the lowest of all the major economic family types. However, this was 26.4% higher than it was in 1980. In contrast, the median income for lone-parent families headed by men declined 4.1% during this 25-year period, to $51,974."

So, overall the news is still good. Sure, the richest got richer in relative terms, but even the poorest families got better-off.

Happy Independence Day to our friends South (and North) of the Canadian Border!

Something to remember:

When in the course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.
