Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Sunday Morning
15 Apr. 2001
0045 Hours Zulu

The ever-present Vancouver rain poured down. Rivers poured down gutters on the buildings, swirling down storm drains that were clear and creating pools where they were blocked.

There was a knock on the front door of the police station. The Constable on duty answered it, admitting an elderly Asian woman. She didn't speak much English, so Lee was woken up to translate.

Sighing and rubbing her eyes, Lee unzipped her sleeping bag and put her feet in her boots. They were cold and she shivered, but something was obviously up. Lacing up, she zipped up her dark tactical jumpsuit over a turtleneck sweater, deciding not to bother with her uniform.

Pulling back her hair into an elastic she let her fellow Mountie lead her to the lobby, where the old lady was warming up under a blanket and sipping a cup of tea.

"Good evening, Madam. To what do we owe the honour of your presence on such a cold and wet night as this?"

She tried to keep from yawning or shivering.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

It was obvious that this woman was perhaps a little deranged. She was old and wrinkled, wore many layers of clothing, possibly a street person.

She rambled along rapidly in Cantonese and Lee struggled to follow her.

Her name was Mrs. Yao. "Oh yes, yes, terrible night, it's just atrocious out there. It's getting cold out you know, I have an umbrella but it's broken now. My grandson said he would be bringing me a new one but I haven't seen him in such a long time. So disrespectful, one should always obey one's elders..."

Eventually after several minutes of this meandering dialogue, she got to the point. "Something woke me up, the building across the street from my apartment, there was a light inside the back of the restaurant, some people, not supposed to be there, I don't know, I don't know. I think someone is in trouble? Maybe? I don't know."

Lee couldn't get any more out of her. Not who was in trouble, what kind or why, how many people were there, what they may be armed with.

She was able to get an address of where Mrs. Yao lived and figure out the location was the Pnom Penh Restaurant, a Cambodian restaurant in Chinatown not too far from the railroad station. It was only about 3 and a half blocks away.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Lee instructed the Constable to keep Mrs. Yao company.

She went to wake up Clarke.

"Hey, we have a situation. Hard to say what it is, a local from Chinatown just reported it, came up to the door. She thinks someone may be in trouble in a restaurant a couple blocks away. I think it is pretty unusual for someone to be messing around this time of night in this weather. We don't know if the restaurant is abandoned, who's in trouble, how many people there are and what they are armed with, and so on."

"Would you mind taking your people and checking it out, or at least having Andy do it for you? Take one of the SUVs? I'll stay here and get the Mounties here ready as backup."

It seemed to Lee that alerting the UBC's reaction force would not be helpful, as it would take at least a half-hour to arrive, of not more, in the rain and dark.

In reply to Zhang Rachel Lee (msg #4):

Clarke pulled on her own jumper and boots, nodding sleepily.  "Probably best if we have a look while you get some Mounties for backup, yes.  I'll get the others up.  Once she was dressed she went about gathering Andy, Kelsey and Tyler.

"Sorry to wake you guys after so little sleep, but looks like there may be trouble.  While they dressed and kitted up, she made some tea and filled them in on the same brief Lee had given her.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Already awake, Taras didn't mind the sudden interruption. He put his RCMP uniform as he did believe that will be more appropiate and holstered the nine mil and then he headed for the operations room. While briefing the personnel on duty about the call he picked up a Motorola and radioed the night patrol asking for their location. They were cruising West Broadway not far from the intersection with MacDonald. Taras decided to order them to wait for him while he jumped into Khandola's ride as he found it better suited than the clunky UAZ.

A few minutes later the two SUVs were rolling down towards the old Chinatown. Before they would reach the Cambie bridge Taras enquired about the address of the occurrence and let the other party guide, the local RCMP officers, do the approach.

The long stretch of Broadway gave the Ukrainian man time enough to think about the way things were changing lately. He wondered how far a support to a military recce mission could shift into a mere local police effort. While crime fighting was somehow important to the normal return to daily activities in a big city he felt that they were far behind a full comprehension of the situation in the Lower Mainland and more pressing issues were left unattended. He made himself a mental note to discuss this with Lt. Cmdr. Clarke.

The radio set started again with an answer to their queries...

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Windshield wipers pounding back and forth, Taras was just under 10 minutes out when the rest of the team was leaving the old Police station.

As he drove, he reflected on the reason he was  being sent out on such a foul night. The example of Jagelis weighed heavily on Khandola and Angla, and while they seemed more comfortable with Clarke's judgement and leadership they still insisted on having their personal liaison, him, along to see with his own eyes how she and the team reacted in a crisis. If this was nothing then it was merely a bad night out, if a real situation developed it would be in a heavily built-up area that might have people they wanted to court. Much bad could happen, as well as much good.

The address was the Pnom Penh restaurant in Chinatown (244 East Georgia), on the middle south side a snippet of E. Georgia St. between Main and Gore. Just a block or so away from the Dunsmuir and Georgia St. viducts and a couple blocks from the Canadian Pacific rail station.

Taras and company would be approaching the area from the south, the rest of the team from the north.

Kelsey had verified with the signals section at UBC that there was no unusual radio traffic or new call signs on the air.

They walked down both sides of Main st. in 2 pairs using the buildings for cover: Andy and Tyler on the East side, Clarke and Kelsey (with radio pack) on the left.

Rain poured down, collecting in giant puddles and immense streams, flowing around garbage and debris in the street and piled on the sidewalk. There were a few abandoned cars parked along the kerb, as well as the 3 MAIN bus, an electrical trolley bus, dead power leads hanging off the roof like huge antennae.

When they were nearing the intersection of W. Georgia and Main (restaurant off to the left) the team re-formed on the east side of the street, hugging the rain-slick cinder-block wall. Andy was on point, followed by Clarke and Kelsey, with Tyler picking up drag.

Andy had almost made it to Main and E. Georgia and was getting prepared to have a careful look-see around the corner to the left, when they all heard a woman's shriek of terror coming from the direction of the restaurant. It was followed by the loud smack of someone hitting the pavement hard, and then an even louder yelp of pain.

They then heard a man's rough voice call out, "...better fucking stop and get on the ground now, bitch! Or I'm gonna light you up like the Forth of July!"

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

God Damn Fucking Curry!

The reckless, endlessly gloomy rain in Vancouver made an imperious necessity to keep the windows rolled up and the olfatory sense of the distinguished ex-Soviet Officer was throughoutly hammered during the ride by the personal signature aroma of the traditional operator of the vehicle: The no less distinguished, and blue turbaned, Khandola.

While approaching the area indicated, Taras alleviated the inner atmosphere with a 2 seconds push of the down button gaining not only much needed fresh air but also some periferal view and also enhanced situational awareness. This last much compromised by the heavy rain outside concocted with the foggy mist inside of the SUV.

This newly acquired awareness came also in the form of a series of voices, muffled by the current meteo but clearly indicating distress between a male and female. He also noticed the presence of the fellow team companions already approaching. To clearly state the nature of his intentions, Shevchenko operated the emergency lights and suddenly the night bursted into an animated symphony of color while surrounding glass windows and thousands of diminute raindrops reflected the wild whirling mix of red and blue. A couple of short strokes with the powerful siren came to reinforce the visual effects delivering a clear message: The Police has arrived.

The other patrol vehicle stationed nearby and without acting upon instructions but basically imitating the Sargent proceeded also to activate the lights but decided to remain silent. Somehow they were expencting Taras, as a superior in command to act first and, shyly, stayed inside the car.

Without pause Shevechko turned off the engine. Swinging to the left in the seat he grabbed the pistol, flipped up the manual safety and chambered a round. Swinging right and with the thumb and index finger he took a footlong, black flashlight by the bulging headlight as it was resting in the passenger seat. Swinging left again he opened the door with the rest of the left free fingers while pushing at the same time with the shoulder. Once out of the vehicle and carrying the compact Smith and Wesson in one hand and the Maglite in the other he realised that he ran out of upper extremities to close the door. Being an imperative to protect the cruiser from the elements, Taras solved this dilemma with a swift kick from his right foot: BLAM!

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The 2 police SUV's pulled up to intersection of Main and E. Georgia, opposite Andy at the NE corner, getting ready to have a look down E Georgia at the restaurant.

The shorts bursts from the siren echoed as the light from the sires reflected off a thousand surfaces.

Out of the SUV and in the rain, Taras saw there was a half-naked woman a half block to the East on the South side of the street, in front of the Pnom Penh restaurant. A half-naked poorly-shaved man wearing US BDU pants, tattos scrawled across the flesh of his dead-white torso, was leaning out the 2nd story window. He had been yelling at the woman and pointing an M16A2 rifle with a flashlight and M203 grenade launcher attached at her.

He currently seemed stunned by the arrival of the police, staring at the new vehicles with open-mouthed shock.

Taras could immediately guess what happened. In a bid to escape, the young woman (limping slowly, cradling her right arm) had jumped out the 2nd story and fell to the street, avoiding the front door for some reason. She saw Taras and choked, "please God help me... they're crazy and they're gonna kill me..." She started to limp towards him.

They were about 80m away from where the two groups were.

Edit Added:

Peeking around the corner, Andy described the situation for Clarke and Kelsey.

Two things were pretty clear to Clarke.  First, they only had seconds before the man hanging out of the second story window got over his surprise and turned the launcher on the cruiser.  Second, he wasn't alone.

She said quietly, calmly, "Andy, shoot him before he turns that thing on Taras.  Tyler, Kelsey, look to the doorway.  The woman is expecting more of them to come out of there.

With the attention of everyone on the cruisers and the whoopie lights, I guess that the small military attachment can take a peek easy enough, the lights doing more than drawing attention, but coloring and lighting the entire rainy street.  Seeing the M16 Kelsey speaks up.

Tyler, a bit new to the ROE's, had already locked, and subsequently loaded a round into the chamber of his CAR15.  He kept the selector lever on SAFE as he moved behind an abandoned car that allowed for a good view of the restaurant.  He peered at the doorway, neither his head, nor rifle moving much, only his eyes moving in a pattern as central vision dissipates during darkness.

He did not speak a word when he watched Andy get ready, and pop off some rounds.  Combat was just another element of life for the American, and it showed in his lack of a flinch, or any negative reaction.

A blink from the woman, then she is crouching and moving to cover Clarke, still on safe, not that it slows you down much to flick to fire, looking for the next target already, C-8 up but barrel pointed slightly down, butt to shoulder, another combat seasoned veteran, when it gets hot she slips into that mode effortlessly.  At the sharp end, you are infantry first, radio and mechanic last.

As Taras was walking towards the location where the injured woman and the armed suspect a sharp buzzing sound of shor rang around him. He didn't expect this to happen with such a speed. He "holstered" the flashback not in the correspondant ring in the duty belt but rather stuck it right under the belt then he picked up the Motorola:

Everybody stop shooting please. We have a wounded person and the first thing we need here is an ambulance and back up.

Shevchenko didn't stop his brisky pace while using the radio. After hearing the shots he simply get closer to the wall to avoid getting into the field of fire of the rifle. A few steps after the radio message Taras used the thumb to put the gun in single action.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Andy could see the man's dog tags hanging against his chest, dual US-style ones taped together (Canadian dog tags being a single tag that is broken into two tabs). He moved his left hand down to the trigger of the grenade launcher, probably intending to fire a 40mm HE round at the unarmoured SUV in front of him.

Hitting the lever to chamber a round and setting the selective fire lever on Single, he settled the C8's optical sight's illuminated reticule on the man and fired. The bullet punched a neat black hole in his left hand, smacking the plastic fore stock of the rifle. With a howl the man dropped the rifle, and the next round tore into his left bicep. Andy kept firing single shots, bullets pocking the bricks above and below him. The rifle clattered into the street below him.

Taras called for a cease-fire over the radio while reaching the cover of the nearby building. The woman continued to limp towards him. The two mounties behind him looked at him for instructions. One with a C8 was behind the engine block, the other with an MP5 was by the rear edge of the SUV.

Turn Summary:

Turn 1: Taras pulls up and gets out, Andy looks around the corner, Aims and Talks (reporting the situation). Man loses Initiate and is surprised. Clarke and Kelsey talk.

Turn 2: Man recovers from surprise and moves to shoot a 40mm grenade at Taras, Andy shoots 5 rounds (2 hit), Clarke completes issuing orders, Kelsey and Tyler move to covering positions. Taras calls for cease-fire and backup while Moving.

Next turn is turn 3. please be advised actions that take more than one turn (5 seconds, see Combat Notes) may not be resolved in next GM post. (Talking is 1 sentence per turn.)

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The rapid shots rang out in the rainy night.

Flinching, the woman limped closer towards Taras, moving closer to the buildings like him.

Taras had almost reached the alley leading off E. Georgia, and coincidentally almost reached her.

Across the street Tyler and Kelsey had taken cover behind 2 different cars, covering the front of the building, as was Andy.

Clarke began the long exacting process of making radio contact with the different elements under her command.

The man was hanging half out the window now, starting to lost his balance. Blood was flowing freely down his arm and from his wounded hand. He muttered something, and hands came from inside the building to steady him and begin to pull him in.

The 2 mounties that had come with Taras maintained their positions for lack of other instructions, one behind the hood, the other behind the rear of the SUV.

Turn 3 Tactical Summary:

Taras trots 20m towards the alley and the woman, she limps 10m towards him.

Kelsey, Tyler and Andy use "Aim" actions to cover the front of the building. Any or all can shoot the man or the person inside the building helping him.

Clarke will need to take several turns on the radio to first establish contact, then relay information. This may take around 30 seconds total.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

While the dantesque figure of the aftermath of the shooting was still fresh in his mind, Taras could notice that the helpless victim was approaching him in a dash for freedom of the previous gunpoint entaglement. The desperate woman was in the right track, firstly moving closer to the wall and then towards the man in uniform.

Shevchenko didn't expect the victim to walk but primeval fear is a powerful antidote able to overcome the most daunting situation. Being the only one closer enough to render inmediate assistance, the ukrainian soon abandoned his thoughts about moving to cover the back alley and instead advanced towards the woman:

I'm here to help you!

Military training kicked in in Taras mind. Extraction of casualties under enemy fire was a delicate business. Easy prey for hideous snipers, ambushes and other demons of the battlefield, the situation call for the ability to provide speed for the evacuation, protection and armed response if necessary. To accomplish this he needed help and for that he chose to call in the patrol that came along with him. Using the talkie he commanded them to bring the vehicle.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras met the woman at the entrance to the alley off E. Georgia. She collapsed against him gratefully. "Oh please... you're a policeman, thank you... My God, thank you so much! They moved a few steps aside into the alley mouth, so they were out of the direct line of fire.

Taras then started contacting the mounties waiting at the corner by radio to bring up the SUV.

The radio operator at the VPD station finally replied, and Clarke started relaying instructions.

Tyler aimed at the lower door, noting that it and the window beside it had been boarded up with plywood sheets and covered with graffiti.

Andy issued his order to freeze, and aimed at the men in the window, while Kelsey also covered them.

Pausing for a brief second at the order, the man then seemed galvanised. The one outside yelled, "Fuck!" while his buddy inside, also dressed in US BDUs, yanked on him hard. They sprawled inside out of sight on the floorm but not before those outside had a chance to shoot.

Turn 4 Tactical Summary:

Taras Moves at a Walk (10m) and Talks (to the woman), initiates radio contact with the waiting Mounties.

Clarke starts issuing orders over radio.

Andy Talks (yells at the men) and continues Aiming, Covering the man inside the building helping his friend.

Tyler and Kelsey Aim to cover the front of the building, and are in Overwatch.

Men in building Move to get inside, although Andy, Tyler and Kelsey can conduct Opportunity Fire before they're completely out of sight.

RCMP reply to Taras, establishing radio comms.

The difference between Aiming to Cover and Aiming for Overwatch is someone can be Covered if they are already visible, and any Opportunity Fire against them counts as an Aimed shot. Overwatch is keeping a lookout over a general area to engage anyone moving into line-of-sight, and is a Quick shot.

Tyler was starting to notice a trend.  His heart sank, and the blood left his face.  He felt as if his soul were falling to his ankles when he realized who they may be shooting at.  He quickly spoke up so everyone could hear.

"WAIT...HOLD UP HOLD UP!  FUCK, THEY'RE IN US CAMMIES!"
He barked out to nobody in particular.

"Try talking to these guys!"
he continued.  "I MAY KNOW THEM!  One was wearing dog tags!"

The fact that the wounded man had been wearing dog tags about his neck didn't click in Tyler's mind until the shooting gallery seemed to pick up around him.

Foreign troops, possible deserters, acting as if they were in charge, threatening the citizens of the country.  Kelsey felt a bit sorry for them, but it didn't affect her trigger finger or aim, as she resumed an overwatch of those windows.

If Tyler happened to know these guys, possible, but not too likely, it might not help if... "And if they in Canada, supporting the Hell's Angels, Essentially foreign troops supporting an insurgent government.  What then, Tyler?"  Cold hard truth there.  Rebels.  Deserters.  Supporting an insurgent or illegal group within Canada's borders.  "That one guy was certainly threatening a Canadian Citizen, the other refused to comply with Canadian police.  They are wearing a military uniform, using military gear, and it's not Canadian, do you understand, Tyler?"  Clear enough, one would hope, and knowing the background of these troops.  They had spent a long hard war fighting foreign invaders on Canadian soil.

All of it, said loud enough to carry, at least to Tyler, but considering the direction she is faced, hopefully to the building as well.

Action:  holding and watching the windows.

After he fired he became aware of a burst of automatic fire heading in the same direction and Tyler's calls for a cessation of fire. He remained covering the window both to see the results of his marksmanship and to see how events unfolded. He'd warned the man and then shot him, he had no regrets.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

As the men chose to ignore the order to freeze, Kelsey and Andy opened fire.

Andy's shot was rather difficult as his target was behind someone else, but he was certain the bullet hit the man dead-bang. He watched through the scope as they both fell backwards, out of sight. Kelsey's burst was a little high and off to the side, popping out sprays of brick dust and drilling a neat hole through the plywood covering one of the windows. The shots echoed through the rain-wet streets and dark buildings around them, throughout Chinatown and the East End.

Looking at the front of the building from E. Georgia, the top (2nd floor) had 4 windows. 3 were covered with plywood, the second from the right had no glass or plywood and that was where the men had been. The ground floor was a door on the right and large picture window on the left, both covered in sheets of plywood. The building to the right was roughly the same height, but the one on the left was only 1 story, meaning that there was possibly access to the 2nd floor from the roof (and vice-versa). Rainwater from backed up storm drains was just starting to get to the level of the kerb.

Over the radio, Taras ordered the Mounties to bring up the SUV, and they acknowledged, "10-4, rolling."

The SUV accelerated around the corner from Main onto E. Georgia, then into the ally mouth where he was starting to check out the girl. He checked her "ABCs": Airway, Breathing, Circulation. She seemed to be managing okay, perhaps going into shock. Her ankle was starting to swell as she leaned against the wet brick wall of the building, and the wrist she was cradling against her brassiere looked swollen, possibly fractured. It would take another few seconds to check her pulse. She sobbed, wordlessly. He could also see other bruises, one on her cheek, others forming on her neck and one on her arm. There were also some small burn marks on the back of her hands and her chest.

The police SUV pulled up beside him, tail end sticking out of the alley mouth onto E. Georgia and both front doors began to open. The flashing lights reflected off the walls and street in the rain.

Clarke continued relaying instructions over the radio, having to stop and repeat herself once or twice.  She felt she would be done in the next few seconds or so.

Turn 5 Tactical Summary:

Taras gives orders to Mounties, commences 1st Aid on the woman.

Clarke continues giving orders over the radio.

Andy fires one Aimed shot via Opportunity Fire, hits the target, then continues Aiming in Overwatch.

Kelsey fires a 3-round burst via Opportunity Fire, misses, then continues Aiming in Overwatch while talking to Tyler.

Tyler talks to Kelsey and those around him, asking them to possibly cease firing.

Men in 2nd story of building fall back down out of sight.

Mounties acknowledge Taras, bring up SUV.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Clarke finially finished her call. "Be advised, units are en route from Victor Pappa Delta station and Uniform Bravo Charlie." Clarke sighed with relief.

"Take care of her!" Taras told the Mounties that were getting out of the SUV.

"Got it! Okay miss, it's all right, we're here to protect you."
She tried to regain her composure as the driver started helping her into the rear of the waiting vehicle, while the other moved to the alley mouth to cover the street.

Satisfied that the victim/hostage was well on the way to completing her miraculous escape, Taras moved into the street towards the corner of Main and E. Georgia, crossing on a diagonal away from the windows where the hostile parties had appeared.

Kelsey made her dash down the street, covered by Andy and Tyler. She had almost made it across the alley mouth on the north side (opposite where Taras had come from) when someone inside the building stuck the stubby barrel of an American M249 SAW (different from the C9 SAW because of the lack of optical sight) out the window pointed in her direction. They rested the bipod on the window sill, pulling back on the charging handle.

Andy couldn't get an angle on the would-be shooter. However, Tyler could mostly see the man, someone bare to the waist except for a Kevlar vest. He relied on his reflexes and training to automatically fire a pair of shots, striking the man in the abdomen and left arm. He fell back, leaving the SAW hanging on the window.

Kelsey made it to the car safely as the shots echoed off the surrounding buildings.

Turn 6 Tactical Summary:

Taras: Talks, then begins running across the street.

Clarke: finishes with her radio traffic.

Kelsey: Running 30m East.

Man inside building prepares SAW to fire at her.

Andy: Aiming and Covering can't take the shot.

Tyler: Opportunity Fire, takes 2 shots (this was his "held" action.

Mounties: assisting woman.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The shots from Tyler's carbine faded, and the man with the SAW went down out of sight. Kelsey braced on the hood of the abandoned SUV, rain-soaked bonnet cold underneath her sleeves. She sighted in on the dark rectangle of the window, NVGs flipped up on her helmet so she could use the scope.

Clarke started barking more orders into the radio, this time addressing the Mounties across the street from her. They responded in the affirmative ("...10-4, we're asking her now...") as Taras easily made the corner where she was located.

As Taras passed him, Andy started across the street heading diagonally to the SE. The best approach would be along the walls of the buildings along the south side of the street. His kit bounced as he ran, boots thumping and splashing on the pavement. He made it safely to the other side of the street.

They could all hear several sirens approaching from the north, behind them from where the VPD station was located. A quick check North along Main showed a police cruising approaching at high speed, lights going. They could hear another a block or so over, coming down Gore.

Turn 7 Tactical Summary

Taras: Running across the street, arriving at the NE corner of Main and E. Georgia.

Tyler: continue Aiming for Overwatch, front of buildings (to SE).

Kelsey: Aiming for Overwatch, front of buildings (to SE).

Clarke: Radio Communications.

Andy: Running 30m across the street diagonally to the SE.

Woman: telling Mounties about what's in the building.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The Mounties who were talking to the woman passed on the information she provided. As he related the information, the SUV drove forward south down the alley towards Union st., then turned onto Main.

"Ah, she says she's an Undergrounder who was kidnapped about four hours ago. She thinks there's seven of them and they're all heavily armed: four army guys, two guys she thinks aren't, and an HA who seems to be their boss, but no other hostages. She heard one of them say they booby-trapped all the ground entrances, and they have an army jeep with a big gun on it and a motorcycle parked in the alley. Also, she says they all repeatedly agreed none of them would be taken alive. Be advised we're heading directly to UBC now."

Hearing that she was an Undergrounder, Kelsey wondered if this had anything to do with the intercepted radio conversation last week where one Biker had bragged to another they were going to abduct some girl off the streets and they party with her, before presumably killing her. Thinking about what little he'd seen of her, Tyler thought she might actually be the blonde Undergrounder girl named "Elise" that he'd seen hanging with Nathan a few days before.

As the information was relayed, Lee and the section of 8 Militia and 6 RCMP Auxiliaries from the VPD station arrived. While some set up a perimeter encompassing E. Georgia, Gore, Main and Union streets, in pairs of officers and militia, Lee parked by Clarke. The officers and militia took what cover they could, behind their own vehicles or the stripped hulks abandoned around them on the streets.

While Tyler and Kelsey covered, Andy reached the front of the building. The front door was a plywood sheet, as was the front window. He noted there were observation slits cut into them. Andy noted something that made his blood run cold: on the rooftop above him was a sandbag attached to the edge of the building. It was holding something squarish. He squinted, checking it out with his NVGs, wondering if he was seeing what he thought he was seeing.

Oh HolyFuckingShit! he thought.

It looked like someone had used an empty sandbag to fix a Claymore mine pointing straight down, to catch anyone trying to come in the front door. If it was standard US military operating procedure then they would be command-detonated from inside. Checking the roof edge on either side of the restaurant he saw two more, one to the left and one to the right. Any group attempting come along the side of the buildings for cover would have one or more Claymores firing down onto their heads.

Turns 8-12 Tactical Summary

Taras: Waiting for orders.

Clarke: Communicating on Radio with Andy and Mounties.

Andy: Moving up to front door, noting Claymores mounted overhead on edge of building.

Kelsey: Covering for Overwatch.

Tyler: Covering for Overwatch.

Mounties in SUV: Relaying information from woman, driving to UBC.

Lee: Talking to Clarke.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

At the moment the victim was evacuated from the doorsteps of the Hell's headquarters and the arrival of the requested reinforcements was imminent, most of the well trained eyes of the military and Law Enforcement members of the team was quickly gathering details of the surroundings.

Taras V. Shevchenko, as a veteran combat engineer probably spotted the appeareance of directional mines strategically located as a defensive measure. Obviously didn't like it as he was well aware of the effects of a close range detonation of that kind of ammunition.

Clarke! there are mines on the rooftop! We are going to need a sniper to take them out!

Standard procedure of this type of devices for the Soviet Army engineering teams was relying mostly in the use of heavy machinery and/or use shockwaves caused by explosives to detonate them in a sympathetic manner. The current lack of such equipment didn't allow for that but the enemy had committed a mistake. The mines needed a clear field to enhance effectiveness but somehow they forgot to conceal them. As such, a good shooter will be acting as UXO remover and therefore negating the advantage of perimetral security.

Good news that no innocent was inside as reported but this was not going to be easy. Hardcore criminals willing to give no quarter and fight to the end will put to the test the ability to the newly formed Government to deal with extreme situations. The presence of a Hell's Angels member will certainly call for lots of trouble...

"Affirmative on the mines, Ma'am. Three Claymores ready to hit an entry team." he breathed hard, glad he'd thought about looking up, "Do you want me to move to shoot them?"

Even with his C8 he was confident that he could either expolde or disable them, though it would take a little time. As he waited for orders, he moved to be out of the booby-traps' danger zones.

Lee added, "Commander, I did bring Andy's rifle, it's in the SUV."

"Bear in mind that most of our volunteers in the RCMP Auxiliary don't have the training, experience or equipment to deal with trained soldiers, and the UBC Militia aren't much better off with just 12 weeks of GMT ("Basic") courtesy of Alain."

"As of right now, according to Inspector Khandola, your people are the best option to deal with this situation and we are to give you as much support as possible, but it's your show."

She didn't look happy with the situation, but it was unfortunately all too true. Aside from a cadre of experienced RCMP, the RCMP Auxiliaries they'd recruited over the last week or so had been unable to go through the standard 6 months training at Depot, the RCMP academy in Regina. While some of UBC's newly-formed 12-person ERT had experience (like Lee herself) or at least been through tactical training, most hadn't. For those that had it had been years since they'd been able to formally practice at the range and "shoot house" out in CFB Chilliwack (if the rumours that the base had been nuked was true, then they never would).

"Good idea.  Where do you want to move to, Andy?  We have your sniper rifle."

Clarke remembered Tyler's offer to try to talk to the men in the building, and his assertion that they were American deserters.  They might have been recruited by the Angels under the assumption that they would only be safe if they "signed up".  Otherwise, they'd be hunted down and killed, or turned over to American authorities and hung.

In truth, they would be held accountable for any criminal activities, but being a deserter by itself was not a death sentence.  Once the claymores were disabled and any chance of escape was cut off, Tyler was welcome to try to talk to them.  They had three dead or wounded of the seven.

An American deserter serving with the RCMP was proof enough that what the Angels might have told them about how they would be treated by the Canadians wasn't necessarily true.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Moving away from the danger zone of the Claymores, Andy looked over the area. As a sniper, he liked having the high ground in an urban environment. The 4th or 5th floor of the apartment building across the street from the restaurant would allow him not only to look into the room where they'd seen the hostiles appear, but cover the entire roof area of the opposing block as well.

"Up in the building I can get a clear shot and cover the area," he transmitted to Clarke over the team net.

The various groups of Militia and RCMP Auxiliaries reported to Lee that they were in position, although no one had eyes-on the rear of the restaurant and the vehicles presumably parked there.

On her backpack PRC-77 radio, Kelsey contacted the signals unit and found out they were already in business, monitoring the channels the Angels used. So far, there was no traffic to speak of from any stations.

Reports were also coming in via Lee's SUV's police radio to Clarke that the UBC's reaction team of 12 RCMP were en route, as well as several section-sized contingents of Militia and RCMP Auxiliaries. This signals task was normally Kelsey's job, but Lee managed the best she could.

Fox had the LAV III almost on the road as well, although the main weapon and coaxial weapins were currently unloaded as it wasn't stored that way during maintenance for safety reasons. He did have the C6 MAG on the pintle, and would be able to pick up Chris on the way in.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The sudden change in the chain of events triggered by the violent reaction put Taras back in "square one". Against all tactical sense the firefighing started without the possibility of securing the area or even make verbal contact with the suspects. Now there was no coming back and the re-inforcements were swarming the area from different angles of approach and probably with poor situational awareness and as varied as dubious training and background to operate as a cohesive force.

In Taras mind this could work in a positive way only if they could be channeled properly.

Clarke! Get the reinforcements to secure every access including the back-alley.

Then, using his own portable radio, Shevchenko called the main HQ requesting one of the on duty patrols to move near "Brandy's" and monitor the activity. The mentioned presence of a HA member around and the amount of noise that they were causing by now will stir things up and the last thing that Taras wished was an unwanted motorcade parading towards the scene.

Taras established contact with one of the mobile patrols from Kerrisdale that was en route. It would take a few more seconds to redirect them and for them to acknowledge.

Keeping under the cover of the buildings, Andy started back down the street. He headed west towards the SE corner of Main and E. Georgia in order to cross as far from the restaurant as possible.

Kelsey and Tyler stayed where they were in the pouring rain, behind their stripped and abandoned vehicles.

Clarke and Lee debated what to do and how to do it.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Andy met up with Clarke, Lee and Taras at the corner of Main and E. Hastings.

He retrieved his C3A1 rifle, while Lee brought in the last of her local partially-trained reinforcements to cover the front. Additional reinforcements from UBC would still be 20-30 minutes to arrive. By then, the renegades could be long gone if they succeeded in breaking out, which it seemed they had the weapons and expertise to accomplish. If they got their act together in time.

Kelsey and Tyler were pulled in as the militia deployed to cover the front.

Over the next minute they got organised by the SUV, aware all the time that the clock was ticking. There was heavier body armour available, plus one of the team's disposable M72A3 anti-tank rockets. Lee also had 6 CS canisters and 4 flash-bangs.

The RCMP patrol reported to Taras that they were halfway to Brandi's, crossing the Burrard St. Bridge.

It was up to Clarke to decide who would go around back, and who would lead them. Someone, either her or Lee, had to stay at the SUV/command post to coordinate activities outside.

GM Note: You have a (very) small breathing space for about the next 12 turns, and combat is over for the moment. If you get into a really heavy discussion, things will progress whether you're ready or not! Figure out a team, an approach, and some general instructions. Combat will resume when you begin on your chosen course of action.

Clarke will use a couple of rounds to re-organize the team.  For the time being, Taras will take command of the military team and move to cover the back alley.  Taras will check for additional booby traps and disarm as needed.  He can direct Andy, Kelsey and Tyler to prepare to deal with the suspects as they exit the building.

Lee has charge of covering the front of the building.  She can designate another shooter to disable the claymores on the front of the building by shooting them out.  With the protection of the claymores gone and no way of shooting out the front without being hit, the suspects may try to make a run for it out the back.

If any of the sniper personnel that Andy has been training are on the scene, they can join the others covering the back.  Taras can command them with the rest of the group or designate Andy to take charge of his team, at his discretion.

Once this is done, Clarke will continue monitoring the radio to make sure that the teams in front and back of the building stay coordinated.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras knew advance knowledge of the terrain was an important component of any tactical situation, and it was crucial to understand the boundaries of permissible action.

I did not have a good look at the ally other than it was rather wide, so Corporal Lee, if you would contact the units at that end we may receive some useful information from what they can see.

Commander Clarke: not to criticise excessively but an important aspect of this situation has already been compromised by the improvised, if necessary, nature of our actions. I must stress that to put things "back on track", as you would say, we MUST warn the suspects to surrender, that no further harm will come to them if they come peacefully. We shall also warn any suspects in the alley before engaging, if at all possible, and this is important to keep in mind.

He looked each of his temporarily assigned element in the eye to make sure they understood those critical instructions.

If this requirement is clear, Sergeant McRae, you shall be our eyes in the front, I shall follow with Corporal Champlain behind me, with Sergeant Hope in the rear. Let us depart!

As he talked he donned a tactical heavier vest and helmet. Taras armed himself with a Remington shotgun, slipping extra cartridges in the vest pockets and loops on the weapon's receiver. He slung a small tool bag around his shoulder, not his normal chosen implements but they would have to suffice in lieu.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Lee contacted the units around the perimeter and confirmed that the ally was wide enough for two cars to pass. However, there was a large 5-ton delivery truck abandoned in the middle of the alley to the east of where the suspects were apparently barricaded, blocking any exit in that direction of a wide-bodied vehicle like a Humvee (but not a jeep or motorcycle). Anyone trying to drive a Humvee out would have to come west, coincidentally right towards the proposed approach of the team.

As she communicated with the surrounding units, she found and then handed Clarke a bullhorn.

"Do you need this, ma'am, or would you prefer I did the honours? Just say "we have you surrounded, lay down your weapons and come out unarmed", and so on."

Andy nodded at his orders and headed out with his teams, as he moved along, he spoke to Lieutenant Taras, "Mister Taras, I would like to place two teams in the two buildings opposite the exit from the perpeprators position.I'll cover straight down the alley from the building that butts on to it from the west and I'd like my last team covering the entrance to the alleyway to the east, if these guys are pros and have the gear, they might just blast through the buildings instead of coming out like Butch and Sundance. Are these dispositions acceptable to your plans, or do you want me to deploy them elsewhere?"

Andy knew his reactions in these situations tended to be by the book, the Russian was a more original thinker, not a bad trait Andy knew, and he might have other uses for the teams.

"Sergeant Shevchenko, reinforcements are still around inbound, Echo Tango Alpha ten minutes plus, and if they get here before you're back I'll deploy additional elements as Sergeant McRae suggests. Better get going before they bad guys decide to get the fuck out of Dodge. I'll help Commander Clarke keep things together here."

Mister Andy! Those dispositions are most pleasing indeed, and are well thought-out. When reinforcements arrive in ten minutes or so I shall see they are deployed as such. In the mean time, we are waiting for you to guide us to through the alley to the rear so that I may secure any traps or explosives, so if you would be so kind...

He availed himself of a couple CS "tear gas" grenades and a flash-bang "distraction device" from Corporal Lee, offering another flash-bang to Andy and a CS grenade to Kelsey.

After around 45 seconds or so, the element moved out. Ta

With Andy on point, Taras and Kelsey following, and Tyler in the rear the small element carefully made it's way back across the street to the alley running north-south through the block. They knew there were no booby-traps at this end of the alley, because the police SUV had safely traversed the lane going south to evacuate the hostage. They moved in pairs along the both sides of the alley, against the buildings for cover.

It was a relatively large lane, big enough for delivery trucks. Several abandoned vehicles were parked around them, all stripped.

When they got to where the alley branched east, they stopped as Andy carefully checked out the area with his practiced eye. Sure enough, there was a tripwire strung across the alley about 8m away, running from a pile of trash on the north side to a creosote-soaked telephone pole on the south side.

Taras commented with Andy:

There are some options that we may take in consideration with the mines or bomb-traps. The Police may usually de-activate them but there is more to do than that...We can simply leave them in place removing the firing mechanism so the enemy believes that nothing happened. We can destroy them with a big bang to send a signal or I can turn the directional mines around and use them to our advantage...

The oscillating reflection of the light beam from the flashlight, multiplied by the pearls of rain soaking the entire stretch of the back alley, returned a clear length of tripwire not far from the approaching team bringing the group to a stop.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Forewarned of the trap's location, Taras moved up to examine the tripwire and it's associate munition. It was a trip-flare taped to the rear of the telephone pole, and nothing else. This was a warning device, nothing more.

After a few seconds he spotted a what he believed was probably a Claymore directional mine hidden in a suspicious-looking sandbag. It was placed at the base of the wall on the north side of alley, about 10m away from the flare's position and facing west to fire in their direction. He could not see any other tripwire across the alley connecting to the box, so he bet there was an unseen signal-wire there for command detonation.

This development presented something of a conundrum. On one hand whoever set the traps seemed to know their basic business and also take some care in case a local stumbled into the alley (command-detonation giving someone the discretion to fire or not fire the munition). On the other hand, there was a definite element of shoddiness in the way how the traps were not all that well-camouflaged, and there only seemed to be an "inner" perimeter and not an extended area of control (outer perimeter), as would be expected when any "regular" military unit moved into an area and began to exert it's influence.

It was up to Taras to decide what to do at this point. He knew that NATO bomb-disporal personnel would most likely clear all traps and warnings as they went, so as to not provide complications later if they had to retreat or bring in additional forces.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

A veteran combat engineer with a good share of experience gather back home during the intestine affairs that set a convulsion once and again in the Caucasus and then as a front line fighter in World War III found himself suddenly back at work in his very own line of job description.

Rule number one for de-mining operations regardless of the nature of the task, East or West, is have a clear mind, a steady pulse and avoid distractions at all costs also helps a lot. Shevchenko knew well how important was to get rid of the tripwire fixation complex. Sometimes the lines are left quite visible and apparent in order to confuse the enemy and get him to "fixate" in the wire and get him killed or maimed by anti-personnel mines buried nearby or being ambushed while doing so. A quick evaluation promptly discarded both dangers. The soil was compacted asphalt and so far they still alive in the back alley. Another added problem was the very own characterics of the wire itself. Some are meant to activate the trap while being cut but in this case the tripwire was an inocuos fishing line attached to the flare rocket. The whole complex appeared to be very basic but effective.

Lucky enough to become familiar with the M18A Claymore the previous days when involved with the LAV III modification, Taras was able to positively identify that the wiring was also standard. The layout of the Claymore was by the book. To be more precise the STP 21-1-SMCT "Soldier's manual of common tasks-skill level 1. As with everything the americans do, workable but lacking imagination and creativity. The arrangement was well suited to the urban environment and the lack of professional combattants and as such it was understandable the lack of proper cammo. This also indicated somehow the work of professional soldiers degraded by the personnal circumstances and lack of discipline.

Guys! I'm going to work on this. Please cover me as I have to focus on my task. Keep an eye for a possible ambush or shooter nearby.

Using a common plier, Taras cut the tripwire of the flare and upon visual inspection of the device itself he remove it as well handing the item to Andy in order the free his hands. Then he moved towards the Claymore.

In normal circumstances it would be necesary to remove the firing unit first but that was obviously in the wrong end and the wrong hands. Instead he removed the shipping plug priming adapter by screwing it from the blasting cap and separated both. The he reversed the shipping plug and screw its adapter's end in the detonator well removing the firing wire wrapped around a stake near the sandbag with the blasting cap. Finally he lifted the Claymore after a visual inspection of the emplacement to avoid any trap and secure the folding legs.

Now they have collected enough evidence to prosecute whoever set up that arrangement instead of being destroyed. The enemy will lose the warning capability as well as perimeter defense associated.

The mine and the flare were not themselves trapped. The tripwire was removed simply and expediently, and the mine easily neutralised. Taras almost felt insulted. It was like they weren't even trying!

The team was deployed on both sides of the alley. Suddenly, they heard the full-throated roar of a diesel engine starting up from somewhere unseen further down the ally by the restaurant, on the north side.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

From India, by way of Java, Cambodians have been taught the art of blending spice paste using many ingredients like cardamom, star anise, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and turmeric. Other native ingredients like lemongrass, galangal, garlic, shallots, cilantro, and kaffir lime leaves are added to these spices to make a distinctive and complex spice blend called "kroeung." This is an important aromatic paste commonly used in Cambodian cooking.

The roar of the multiple diesel cylinders starting up betrayed the arrival of incoming trouble. It was doubtful that "Bobby & Lorry" was doing some delivery of the exotic kroeung at this time of the day to the "Phnom Penh" master chief restaurateur.

Careful people! If somebody is trying to get away with a big truck we may have trouble.

Taras readied the shotgun chambering a shotshell with a sounding crack and gave a flashbang grenade to Kelsey.

If the truck comes fast for us throw it and after the bang I'll shoot a couple of rounds to each wheel and we can move quickly to get them. Andy you're a good shot so focus in the cabin. Mr. Tyler, you will go for the passenger side and Kelsey for the driver side. After the cabin is clear we move along towards the back checking the bed. No matter what happens everybody will regroup at the alley with or without prisoners.

It was a quick flow of instructions released to the team. Shevchenko didn't want a carnage but certainly cared for the safety of the group. He didn't forgot his rear .

Attention militia covering the alley...we have a possible incoming hostile truck...as soon as it starts coming my way your orders is to clear the alley and wait for further commands...Did you copy?

He remembered the woman reported seeing a military truck with a gun on it parked in the alley. He hoped it wasn't a Humvee with a fifty-cal or M240, maybe one of the up-armored versions that were starting to come out during the war.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

In-Game:

The other units acknowledged Tara's radio warning.

Map Notes:

The restaurant is in a 2-story building with adjoining buildings to the left and right. The building to its left (immediately beside you) is split between 1 story on the alley and 2 stories on the street side. The building to the right of the restaurant is 1 story. Standard US practice in urban areas is to (mostly) forgo using the ground entrances and instead generally enter and exit via the upper floors, unobserved where possible.

Oddly enough, the engine sounds are coming a little further down the ally from the restaurant, at least one unit to the right. There is a smaller building there, and it's quite possible there's enough room in back to park one or more vehicles there without being seen (by you) by traveling over the adjoining 1-story rooftop.

Further to the east down the alley is a large 5-ton delivery truck, abandoned and stripped. Anything large than a motorcycle will have to come towards you, heading west down the alley.

Listening to the rumble of the engine, the best she could tell due to the echoes and the rain was a large truck engine, maybe a deuce or heavy civilian truck. She thought she could hear voices as well.

The reinforcements were still about ten minutes out. It was a little slower going at night in the rain than anticipated. Plus, they were traveling in convoy so as not to split up, get lost or arrive piecemeal, and they were trying to be a little wary of ambush.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Shevchenko noticed the crescendo of the engine roar in the alley as well as in the tense atmosphere that the imminent approach was causing.

Ok, listen. First we have to identify the vehicle in question and its intentions. I'm afraid we cannot expect anything good but safety is paramount. Everybody remains out of its way and seek good cover. The only way to confront such threat is using the flashbang to our advantage before they see us but that can only be done as far as Kelsey can throw it. In the mean time will be able to see if they have weapons or maybe any hostage. If we have to engage, Kelsey, is your turn. Let us know when you'll go and after the bang they might crash or stop. In any case we have to move fast and attack as surprise is our only friend here. Forget the wheels, too much inertia in any case. Well place shots will do better.

Shevchenko acknowledge that the getaway vehicle was a clear and present danger to face. To focus in the vehicle will not resolve the problem with the hostile occupants needlesly wasting ammunition and response time with doubtful results of stopping a truck. Therefore he decided to address directly the human factor first and foremost. The situation called for a previous positive visual identification of the target based in a moral standpoint (presumption of innocence) but also a tactical shortcoming (the reduced distance of engagement with hand delivered pyrotechnics).

Having the team split and well under cover multiplied the chances to win the engagement as they will be presenting more than one target. The firepower at their disposal seemed to be enough to confront the enemy personnel and the instructions given were focussed in the objective and maneuvre, surprise, simplicity and safety and everybody was responding to a unified command. The amount of time necessary for the target to reach the area of engagement will give the team enough room for further reaction. An unnexpected threat in the form of an up-armoured vehicle or other major surprise will call for further decisions as disengagement if necessary.

Kelsey pulls out the flashbang, palming it, rifle in her left hand

"I'm guessing we are not trying to get to that vehicle before it starts moving?  Want me to get closer in, then?"

Kelsey eyes the cover available, and prepares to hustle to the doorway across the street and farther forward.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Everyone got into position. Kelsey was advised the fuse for the grenade is only 2 seconds, so deployment would be a little different and quicker than the typical C13 issue fragmentation grenade.

The engine changed pitch as the driver put it into gear, but no headlights were turned on. There was also the sound of a motorcycle engine starting, still no headlights. Obviously, this suggested the use of night observation devices, much like the team wore. Andy smiled; it was after the start of the war in '97 that the CF started issuing NODs in any number. He had noted in cross-training with Americans a certain tendency to take them for granted and over-rely on them despite their obvious utility. They could be defeated by unsophisticated means like a strobe light or even a flare, as soldiers wearing them would instinctively stop and stare at the blinding light.

A large vehicle started pulling into the alley from further down to the right. It was a US HMMWV, otherwise known as a "Humvee". Their blood ran cold as the rain as they recognised an M2HB "Ma Deuce" machinegun mounted on top, the gunner wearing NVGs clipped to his helmet. Tyler recognised the model as up-armoured version, with the kevlar protection kit. It wouldn't stop 5.56mm and 7.62mm NATO rounds it would slow them down considerably.

The driver finished pulling out and sped up a little, proceeding in a not-too-hurried manner down the alley towards them. Obviously convinced the lack of action from the flare and Claymore indicated the zone was clear. The gunner looked tense, hands on the grips, looking side to side.

Gripping his carbine tighter, Tyler sighted on the gunner, just on principle. He said to Taras, "fuck me, that's an armored SOB, M1044A1 or M997A2."

Tyler also checked to make sure an M67 hand grenade was also handy. Just in case.

Good news. Fuck them all, right to engage!

Ok. Everybody hiding! Small change of plans! Andy you'll eliminate the turret man as soon as the humvee gets 30 feet close. Kelsey! Right after the shot throw the grenade! Mr. Tyler, As soon as the vehicle stops or gets any closer get a frag grenade down the hatch while we cover you!

History was flashing before Taras eyes. WW2, The Great Patriotic War of partizans against the Panzer, Budapest in 1956, Prague in 1968, the dukhi in Afghanistan, Chechnya...Fighting against all odds: men against machines. Courage, determination and a good sheer of luck.

This one is not going away. Once the humvee is kaputt everybody remains in position and get the biker.

Andy acknowledged his instructions, "Okay." Sliding the bolt on the C3A1 back he made sure a round was chambered, then slid his arm in the sling.

He knelt down in the alley beside the corner of the building, in the narrow gap between it and a garbage can. Not really much in the way of cover but perhaps it would break up his silhouette so that the gunner didn't make him before he could take the shot. 30 feet, 10 metres, was knife fight range. Not a lot of room for error!

Clarke waited tensely for the events in the alley to play out.  She was outside that venue, having left things in the Combat Engineer's hands for the engagement.  If things went badly for the military personnel she might be able to coordinate a response with Lee from the militia.  Realistically that was a vain hope.  If the trained military types couldn't deal with the treat, the police officers would likely be mowed down like grass if they tried to stand in the way of the escaping fugitives.

Thinking a little more, Andy let the rifle hang from its sling and instead sighted in with the carbine. He wouldn't need the starlight scope at this range and the C8's close-in firepower would come in more handy.

Letting the Commando hang across his chest from it's 3-point "John Wayne" sling, Tyler pulled an M67 frag out and held it in his left hand, right index finger on the pin, ready to pull. He edged back and knelt down so that little was visible around the corner.

Whispering, "fuck mother fucker fuck fuck fuck..." he took a deep breath and was calm.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The vehicle approached, slowly accelerating, diesel rumbling off the brick walls around it. The gunner searched for targets, but was looking too far ahead.

Resembling nothing so much as the pile of garbage he was kneeling behind, all that was visible of Andy was his scrim-covered helmet and eyes. He waited until the gunner was checking the other side of the alley, then smoothly brought his C8 up and took a quick pair of shots. The first struck the gunner in the abdomen, blowing through his armour. The next round penetrated the man's face angled upwards, smashing through his teeth and blowing enamel fragments through the back of his skull, splashing the inside of his helmet with fragments of bone, scalp, blood and brain tissue.

The gunner slumped back, nearly-severed head lolling bonelessly. Understanding they were under attack, the driver stepped on the gas pedal to accelerate out of danger, having seen the muzzle flash not ten metres away and to his left. Pulling the pin on the flash-bang, Kelsey heard the spoon disengage with a "ping". She flipped it onto the hood of the passing Humvee. Landing with an audible "klonk" it rolled up the hood, where a surprised and dumbfounded driver and passenger stared at it in horror. Everyone outside ducked down or away and covered their ears. The distraction device detonated with a two million candlepower flash, an ear-splitting BANG! and a blossom of smoke.

Continuing to accelerate, the Humvee passed Tyler, who stepped in close and tossed his grenade overhand into the hatch in front of the gunner. He misjudged his footing and bounced off some kit tied to the side of the vehicle, spinning around and sprawling in the alley. The grenade bounced down the dead gunner's body as the limp corpse collapsed into the cab, then the deadly metal sphere rolled under the driver's seat. The passenger, still blind and unaware of the grenade, opened his door and tried bailing out, perhaps in an attempt to escape or even surrender.

The grenade exploded, blowing out the windows, hood, side doors and rear hatch in a flash and spray of debris and body parts. The upper half of the driver was launched through the gap where the windscreen used to be, while the passenger flew out the door. The dead gunner was ripped into rather small pieces and spewed out of the top hatch. Coasting forward the Humvee belched black smoke from the engine compartment, and the passenger who escaped through literally blind luck hit the ground with a lifeless thud and rolled a few feet before coming to rest near Tyler.

Steering cables sheared, the Humvee veered left, coasting to a halt a few metres down the alley. The duel bangs echoed down the alleys and off the surrounding buildings. There was a thick gut-wrenching smell of smoke, explosive residue and burned flesh and hair. Blood and tissue was splattered all around them in a terrible pattern almost incomprehensible to mortal humans. Everyone's ears rang from the effects of the grenades, despite the efforts to minimise the effects.

Kelsey recognined a US-issue combat boot sitting upright in front of her, a bloody shred of flesh and yellow shard of bone sticking out the top. Lying spread out on the wet pavement of the alley, Tyler found himself looking into the staring eyes of a corpse a few feet away, while Andy contemplated the severed upper half of a headless torso lying neatly as if placed in the garbage can in front of him for pickup on trash day. Taras was perhaps least affected by the tremendous noise and violence explosions, but this was quite gruesome all the same. And this was just outside the vehicle, the inside of the smoke-filled passenger compartment must be almost unimaginable.

Andy: Fires 2 quick shots: both hit (abdomen and head shot, which misses the helmet and kills instantly).

Kelsey: Throws Flash-Bang. (Driver and Passenger are affected.)

Tyler: Steps out and throws Frag at top hatch, scores hit.

Taras: holding action.

Andy blinked at the noise and carnage. Well, that sorted out the cavalry. Things were still tricky however, storming a defended house would end in some of the stormers dying even if they were really lucky. He thought quickly and contacted the Commander, "Ma'am," he said, "permission to try to negotiate with the occupiers. If there's a HA in there, maybe I can convince him I'm working for Bear and might be able to get him away free."

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Under Military Specification MIL-C-401, Composition B is an explosive mixture used  as the main explosive filling in artillery projectiles, rockets, land mines and among other stuff the M-67 hand grenade (C13 in canadian parlance) that Tyler used to recreate a stage for a zombie movie. The scarce 184 grams cocktail of RDX (59,5%), TNT (39,5%) and paraffin wax (1%) transformed the up-armored humvee from a protected shelter into a blast containment chamber with horrifying effects.

Taras knew that there was a biker somewhere. Chances were that he was following the humvee and as such, at this point, should be under the effects of the compound results of the flashbang and then the following explosion. A quick reaction was necessary to overpower him before response. A less likely possibility was that the biker took the other direction. In this case, the militia left covering the alley could be directed to stop the enemy on its tracks.

With those thoughts in mind and before coming out of the save haven of his position, Sgt. Shevchenko gave continuity to the action issuing instructions for the team. He couldn't even have the grace period to reflect in the astonishing results before his eyes.

Kelsey! Report to Clarke and check inside the vehicle for any possible fire. The last thing that a combat engineer really wants is an ammunition cook-off in a back alley.

Mr. Tyler! Check the status of that .50 cal. See if it works! Being the .50 cal HMG mount located forward from the hatch there was a good chance to have the weapon in working condition. In that case it will seriously increase the government arguments down the alley.

Once he paired the first fireteam, Kelsey and Tyler, Taras appealed to the blessed shooter to couple himself and work with him along the lines of modern fire and maneuvre concepts:

Andy! Lets look for the biker!

Since Taras and Andy were covering different sidewalls they would have the advantage of more visual span and no matter where the threat was coming from they'd cover ach other. After the order was issued Taras readied the shotgun while scanning the length of the alley behind the smoking humvee...

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Tyler seemed unhurt except for some bruises from getting sideswiped by the Humvee and hitting the pavement. They would take a while to show and longer to disappear. The man in US BDUs lying beside him was a different story, he seemed unhurt except for a small puncture wound in the lower back of his shaved skull where it met his neck, a tiny red pock in the middle of a little blue welt. He hadn't lived long enough after the steel shrapnel shredded his brain stem to bleed at all.

Moving on to the smoking Humvee, Tyler and Kelsey secured it, stomachs churning at the carnage within. They thought maybe aside from the gunner, driver and front passenger there may have been a fourth in back, but at the moment it would take forensics and DNA testing to tell for sure. The M2HB seemed intact and there was at least a couple spare belts for it in ammo cans. Kelsey thought that being these were Americans, there sure wasn't a lot of personal kit or extra weapons or gear present (intact or otherwise); they obviously hadn't been prepared to move on short notice.

After a few seconds the puff of smoke from the flashbang began to dissipate in the rain, and whatever fire that seemed to be smouldering and hissing in the engine compartment of the vehicle seemed to be going out.

Andy and Tyler oriented themselves eastwards towards the restaurant. Although their ears were still ringing, they heard the bass rumble of a large-assed motorcycle engine revving up, and sure enough in a couple seconds a heavily chopped low-slung Harley shot out into the alley. The rider was wearing a black helmet, leather jacket and goggles. Instead of turning right towards them he planted a boot, and gunning the bike fishtailed in a 90 degree left hand turn. The roar of unmuffled exhaust from the straight "shotgun" style exhaust pipes hammered down the alleyway towards them as he gunned it, trying to get away by squeezing between the large abandoned delivery truck and the wall. They had a clear look at the colours on the back of his jacket over the soft-tail, HELLS ANGELS rocker above, NOMADS rocker below and Death's Head trailing flames in between.

He was about 50m away and they had about 5-10 seconds before he cleared the truck and was upon the militia and RCMP holding that sector of the perimeter.

"Roger Green Six, wilco, Green Two Tree out"
Kelsey continues to fight down her stomach, dinner tonight not seeming like a high possibility at this moment.  Especially with meat.
After looking over the HMMWV she furthers her transmit:
"Green Six this is Green Two Tree, I have four probable down of the Enemy, Damaged  Humm-Vee captured, with fifty caliber machine gun.  No fire."
At the sound of the motorcyle she turns, frowns, and radios before her rifle comes up.
"Hells Angel Bike looks to be attempting escape in other direction, please advise forces.  Over."

I should note that my spelling of "Tree" instead of "Three" is very purposeful, it's what she is saying, and what radio operators are trained to say, because it transmits clearer.  Also, I am assuming she can also easily hear, and likely see, what is going on with the bike, if she cannot, I will be glad to edit.

Kelsey Sarah Champlain:
In reply to helbent4 (msg #140):

"Roger Green Six, wilco, Green Two Tree out"
Kelsey continues to fight down her stomach, dinner tonight not seeming like a high possibility at this moment.  Especially with meat.
"I copy, green two tree.  Green six out."
quote:
"

After looking over the HMMWV she furthers her transmit:
"Green Six this is Green Two Tree, I have four probable down of the Enemy, Damaged  Humm-Vee captured, with fifty caliber machine gun.  No fire."
"Good job, green two three.  I know you've got a real mess there.
quote:

At the sound of the motorcyle she turns, frowns, and radios before her rifle comes up.
"Hells Angel Bike looks to be attempting escape in other direction, please advise forces.  Over."

I should note that my spelling of "Tree" instead of "Three" is very purposeful, it's what she is saying, and what radio operators are trained to say, because it transmits clearer.  Also, I am assuming she can also easily hear, and likely see, what is going on with the bike, if she cannot, I will be glad to edit.

I'll wait for response from Tony for further replies.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Not unlike a Lenin statue in Gorky Park, the slavic soldier pointed towards the fleeing biker while looking at his peer next to him at the other side:

Get him!

Taras was doubtful about the pistol range at that distance and erronously discarded the use of the shotgun as he believed that was loaded with a 00 buck shot. The truth of the matter was that Lee did loaded the weapon with slugs for breach work. A well directed one could have been causing a nasty wound to say the least but, unaware of this, Shevchenko delegated the shooting tasks to the most experience Andy, trusting the range and accuracy of an scoped rifle or carbine.

Taras didn't feel confident about the skill and nerve of the militia at the end of the alley. If useful by all means, he prefered to get the job done by a trusted circle and reserve the more unexperienced auxiliaries as a containment and reserve force.

If downed, the arrest would become imminent and in that case an extra pair of eyes and hands would be of a great value.

In reply to Andrew Montgomery McRae (msg #146):

The alley was old, and been resurfaced many times. It also wasn't completely level, sloping up away from them. Andy had a clear shot, but the biker was bouncing around a bit on the uneven as he accelerated away from them.

His first shot skipped off the pavement, the next hit the grille of the abandoned truck that was beside the target with a "Ponk!". The third shot hit the man low in his back, blowing through muscles and internal organs, exiting out his front via the stomach. Handlebars slipped out of the man's grasp as he slumped sideways off the bike's seat, to the right. The machine slowed down, hit the wall to the right and fell over, coming to a stop in a shower of sparks and a screech of metal. The engine stalled out as the throttle was released, then quit.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The modern rendition of the medieval knight went down with a shower of sparks while the supersonic trail of the ammunition was still ringing in the ears of the protagonists of the night.

Probably some thought should came across Taras mind about the sharpness of the 5,56 mm a soprano coloratura distinguished by agile runs and leaps against the more baritone sounding 7,62 mm caliber. But that didn't have much time to linger as the next move was in need of execution. The portable Motorola took again protagonism in the hands of Sgt. Shevchenko:

Militia, confirm status of biker. If he still alive and responsive handcuff him and bring him to my position.

After making use of a hand held communication device Taras twisted his body to have a visual contact with the rest of the team and modulating his voice to achieve comprehension without compromising the security of the operation he stated:

We need to get closer to the back door of the restaurant. If militia bring the prisoner we'll have to be in position to offer fire cover.

The end of the verbal instruction not exempt of accent and lack of grammatical accuracy came with a more universal signal for "lets go". It was a time to close-in as the numbers of the enemy together with their ability to put up a fight were dwindling.

Sgt. Shevchenko got ready for the move after holstering the radio and grasping the parkerized Remington 870. The bright aiming post was a pleasant surprise that made the delicate art of pointing a weapon in the dark shadows of a back alley quite a bit more easy.

Damn, I forgot something...The jigsaw puzzle was composing inside the brain. Better said, as the pieces were dropping the lines were forming in his particular mental Tetris game.

Kelsey, request the ambulance to be place next to the humvee. Please.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The machinegun was a potent weapon indeed.

Designed with what was considered an armour-piercing projectile for it's day, the bullet would go through light vehicles, telephone poles, cinder block, concrete. Many casualties in Mogadishu during the ill-fated "Blackhawk Down" incident had perhaps been caused by stray rounds fired liberally in the city environment by weapons like these, and stopped by little in their paths. Women, children, qat-stoned Islamic militia, there was no discrimination.

Corporal Champlain, we shall leave the disposal of this weapon to our reinforcements. What time we have to complete our task is short indeed.

He again gave the signal to move out, Taras put his shotgun at high-ready, easily acquiring the illuminated sights in his vision.

Master McRae, if you please? Lead us on again.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The pair of militia acknowledged Tara's instructions and crept into the eastern alley mouth. In the lead was a balding, wiry middle-aged man in glasses that looked like nothing so much as an accountant, his partner was a young woman. The older man had immigrated to Canada in the 70's from Finland. Combat in an urban environment (FIBUA or Fighting in Built Up Areas) was not part of his training in the Finnish Army where skiing was seen as a far more practical skill, but he held his antique FN with confidence as he scanned the alley for threats. His companion gripped her own rifle with considerably less confidence.

The lead man stopped, pointed out a tripwire guarding the eastern approach to his companion. "Dere is a tripwire here, and I see a directional mine too," the man said into his Motorola with a fairly strong accent. Carefully, they stepped over the wire, marking it with a strip of cloth, the continued to the abandoned truck and the downed motorcycle.

Having worked as a volunteer First Aid attendant for several years, he started medical treatment to save the man's life. "De man is unconscious, he is needing medical attention. Bullet wounded in de lower back, exit wound in his stomach. Airway is clear, he is breathing normally, and there is moderate bleeding, probably internal bleeding as well, maybe some kidney damage."

The response to Lee's message was that the reinforcements were still around 5 minutes out, and there was an ambulance accompanying them. As well, she confirmed that a tow truck would be brought out to tow the wrecked Humvee back to UBC, or at least the police station.

In the alley, the team advanced towards the back of the restaurant. As the others covered him, Taras examined the rear door as if it were some kind of poisonous snake. It looked like the lock had been forced, but otherwise solid. Sure enough, he determined it was booby-trapped, but he didn't likely have the tools to disarm it.

As a commando, Andy had received much training in urban warfare both in the FIBUA school at CFB Gagetown, and in Herefordshire in the UK and at bases in the US. After that, combat throughout Europe taught him that while ground level entrances were generally to be avoided and trapped (except to make anyone watching think it wasn't), access to an upper story across the rooftops was viable and desirable in many situations, like what appeared to be the case here.

"Green six, also have someone secure the humm-vee and it's machinegun.  green two three is taking the bolt."  As she speaks she climbs up the HMMWV quickly and extracts the bolt and firing pin assembly from the heavy machinegun and stuffs it in a pouch.  Big piece of metal, but about the smallest part you can take to disable that big hog and still be able to use it later, leaving the guts open to the rain as she jumps back down and falls to the rear to cover everyone else from behind.

"I have disabled the M-2, LT."

She scans the area, with Tyler's words the idea of how approach was done re-enforced, looking over the rooftops for fast access up.. maybe a dumpster or something.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

As their mission was to clear the alley and not breach before reinforcements arrived, that is what they proceeded to do.

There was a command-detonated Claymore on the east side, along with a trip-flare. Other trip-flares were set up to cover the gaps between the buildings on the south side of the alley. The mine and the trip-flares were efficiently disarmed by Taras.

There were 2 more command-detonated Claymores on the rooftops pointing down to nail anyone approaching the rear door along the walls of the north side of the alley. Those were impossible to disarm from the ground level, but they could be shot out by Andy or the ERT marksmen.

They withdrew down the east side of the alley, dragging their unconscious prisoner. Behind them, Lee detailed two of the militia present to move in and secure the wrecked Humvee.

In around ten minutes they could hear vehicles approaching from the south along Main.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The team was gathered at the impromptu command post on the corner of Main and East Georgia. They started treatment on the wounded and incapacitated biker in the back of the police SUV.

Kelsey ran down to where the wreck of the Humvee lay in the alley and handed off the bolt. She gave the bolt to a short, cheerful-looking Filipino man, who looked down at the chunk of metal in his hand and then smiled at her with a wide grin.

"T'anks. I'm Larry. So, ah, what de pock you wan me to do wit dis t'ing?"

Larry was holding one of the new 5.56mm assault rifles that were starting to be made in UBC's metal shops, a design based on the Armalite AR-18. The AR-18 was in part an attempt to create a "western" AK-47 that was cheap, light and reliable, and unlike the M16/C7 could be made in relatively primitive facilities. The design would eventually be incorporated into the somewhat balky British SA-80/L85 and HK G-36 before the war. It was a stop-gap until new C7s and AUSTEYR-88s could be imported from Australia, and these were made with sheet metal, crude welds and wooden furniture with little or no attempt at a refined finish.

The injured biker was armed with a gold-plated and decorated Colt M1911 in a shoulder holster, plus 2 spare magazines. He also wore a concealable Kevlar vest under his leathers, which probably saved his life when he was shot. Anything heavier in the way of weapons was probably still on his bike, which still lay in the ally by the abandoned delivery truck.

"Clarke, I would suggest initiating an escalation of the pressure once reinforcements arrive. At this point, deploy observation teams as suggested by Master McRae."

"Step One is the men barricaded inside hear additional units arriving."

"Step Two is give them a warning: this puts the suspects on notice that we are intending on resolving the situation."

"Step Three is begin negotiations. Although I was most often an assaulter for ERT, I am also a trained negotiator."

"Step Four is if we decide that negotiations are stalled and an entry is necessary, shoot out the Claymore mines. This prepares for entry and serves to escalate the pressure without any directly aggressive action on our part."

"We don't have to follow through with an entry at that point, but we will be better prepared to do so if necessary. The suspects may want to reopen negotiation at that point, as well."

There were around 40 extra militia and RCMP Auxiliaries, plus most of the UBC's regular RCMP detachment, including the ERT (with their marksman) and McRae's sharp-shooter team (only partially trained at this point).

An ambulance arrived and picked up the wounded and unconscious biker for transport to hospital. Another picked up the remains of what could have been deserters.

The LAV-III also arrived, along with Sgt. Fox.

There was no movement from the biker club downtown, or seemingliy elsewhere in the city. The heavy weather was keeping everyone indoors. As well, the airwaves were clear.

Andy replied to Kelsey, "I'm glad you've disabled the MG. The last thing we need is .50 calibre slugs shredding innocents. Great call Kelsey."

He looked at the building they needed to storm and the force they were gathering, he lokked over at the ex-Soviet and said, "Sir, you probably have more experience than me at this, so I apologise if any of this seems like telling my grandma to suck eggs. If we go in, I'd reccomend two teams, on breeches the wall into the ground floor of the building as a diversion, they don't go in but make a lot of noise and fury. Another team could breech the opposite side of the building and clear the house. Our people don't have the experience to deal with having friendlies in such a confusing situation so I'd suggest only having one team in the building at a time. Of course," he smirked, "I'd prefer it if we put the LAV out front, gave them a chance to surrednder and blasted them if they didn't, but that's got too much chance of scoring colateral damage. Looks like we have to do it the dangerous way. I volunteer to be on the assault team, I'll even lead it if you wish."

In reply to Andrew Montgomery McRae (msg #182):

Lee nodded, that was a good idea.

"Distraction is key to a dynamic entry, where the suspects are alerted prior to the breach. Rolling the LAV up to the front is a great idea, it will certainly distract them. As an alternative suggestion we can shoot in the door with the autocannon, no chance to miss at point-blank range! It will "disarm" any booby-traps, or we could use the deck hatches to make an entry to the second floor. Even if we don't use the LAV to shoot in the door or front window plywood, it will be an intimidating sight if you're going in the rear."

"But that's just an option. As negotiator I can't make the call... negotiators don't command, commanders don't negotiate."

Shevchenko was losing the steam of the adrenaline boost that the carnage in the alley brought. It was getting late in the night and now the reinforcements were arriving bringing their own avalanche of questions, enquires and insecurities. The command of such a tremendous choral work  during that situation was certainly new and uncalled for. In any case it was time to get things rolling without losing momentum.

We'll move the LAV but I want fire cover on those windows. Remember that they have anti armor weapons (M203). We are going to need that .50 cal back in action to cover the rear, Kelsey and Tyler you're at it. Andy, you are clear to remove the Claymores. As you have it done let me know so we can proceed with the LAV. Rachel, get a loudspeaker and get them to surrender nicely.

Taras walked towards the armored vehicle and met Sgt. Fox: Good evening, Sgt. What is the status on readiness of the vehicle?

"We're basically operational, I loaded the main gun and the coax on the way over. Got the 40mm Mk.19 on the Commander's hatch... we're ready to rock."

He had some input on the plan.

"Put one sniper element on the building across the street from the front: they can control the rooftops and even look down into the room through the one open window. That's where I would stick Andy. Then deploy the other elements to cover the rear. Yeah, these walls look thick, you won't breach without some C4."

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The sharpshooter elements deployed front and rear.

Andy and a spotter entered the building across the street, and found it was deserted, or at least no one challenged them. They climbed the fire stairs to the top floor, then found the open door of an abandoned apartment overlooking the restaurant. It was perfect, he could cover the entire rooftops and look down into the front room. Anyone trying to deploy anti-tank weapons from inside or out would be dead before they could get the tube on their shoulder. (Inside wasn't so much of a threat because most AT weapons had a deadly backblast, but the American Armbrust rocket and Canadian ERYX could be fired from inside a room and it was therefore a possibility.)

Other police cleared the building and there was no one home, although there were signs a couple suites had been hastily vacated within the last day or two.

Andy radioed in to report he was in place and he could see and shoot out all the Claymores, front and back.

Kelsey and Tyler set up the Ma-Deuce in the rear alley.

UBC did have an 8-person ERT, 2 tactical elements, and they prepared to breach from the rear, as per Lee's recommendation. Blowing off the door would eliminate the booby-trap Taras had discovered there, and after the Claymores were cleared from the rooftops they would have a clear route, if it was decided to go in the rear.

Teams of RCMP cleared out the buildings on either side of the restaurant, determining there was no one inside and in danger. Also, they checked for hidden entrances and exits breached through the interior walls, amd there were none.

The sound of the LAV's diesel rumbled and echoed through the rain, loud and threatening. Fox used the thermal imager to check the buildings around them, and none seemed to have any kind of heat signature to indicate they were currently occupied.

The reply was swift and unequivocal:

"HEY! YEAH! WE WANNA SURRENDER! DON'T SHOOT! We want to leave, but the doors downstairs are booby-trapped! We're coming out onto the roof! Don't shoot!"

Two men dressed in civilian clothes climbed out the eastern windows and onto the roof of the building beside them. They stood shivering in the standing pool of rainwater that had collected there, apparently unarmed. They both wore the unofficial "uniform" of street people: dark hoodies.

He took the bolt, inserted it back into the receiver, then closed the cover and pulled the charging handle slowly in one steady motion, and assuring the bolt latch was released. Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras was trying to make some mental numbers. Remembering the wounded woman statements that they were seven of them. Many things could be wrong and there was always the possibility to have some nasty surprise. His first thought was to remove the surrendering suspects away for the building as soon as possible:

Ok, Rachel. Tell the guys that we are willing to pick them up through the front window and insist asking if there is anybody else inside. Human or demon.

Then he directed his attention to Sgt. Fox. At that time slowly approaching along the street:

Sgt.: Stop where you are. Before reaching the front part of the house use the thermal camera to determine any people inside. We are going to extract those punks but before we will remove the directional mines on the rooftop. We are not counting with more than 2 guys. If anything else, please, give me a report.

While Rachel was already readying the loudspeaker towards the tenderness of her lips...Taras continued to issue instructions.

Andy: As soon as the mines can be removed without the risk of collateral proceed with confidence and at your own discretion.

Then, resting the radio for a while, said to Clarke:

We have the rear well covered. I have trust in Kelsey and Tyler and they have enough firepower to deal with any problem. As soon as the Claynores are removed and we are sure that no more suspects are inside the building we'll be safe to evacuate the suspects and get more information on the booby traps.

"Once we get those two into custody, I want this place cordoned off until it has been thoroughly checked.  There may be more surprises inside that building that we aren't aware of, and I don't want in civilians wandering into this area until it has been cleared."

"Roger that, Sergeant. Too easy!"

After grabbing the ladder from an ERT member, Fox mounted up. He sat down in the commander's seat, putting on his CVC helmet.

He also had access to the main weapon sights and Thermal Imaging System (TIS) and could even direct the weapon from his position with a repeater joystick. As there were no trained gunners onboard he decided to assume both VC/VG duties, counting on the situation to be limited enough in scope to allow this doubling-up. He selected the co-axial machinegun using the toggle switch at the base of the joystick.

Fox had a couple C8-armed RCMP mount up as well in the back with the ladder. "Okay, we're set. Waiting on the "go" signal. We're looking for 2 guys on the roof, no one else expected at this time. Keep the rear hatches closed until I say. Let's go."

He had the driver get ready to roll on his signal.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

"Okay! My buddy looks bad, I don't know if he can put his hands on his head but I'll see if I can get him to do that. There's no one inside. There was just us, the Army guys and the biker. Guess they didn't get too far, eh?" He put his hands on his head, looking worriedly at his companion.

After giving an affirmative, Andy sighted through the starlight scope and cleared all the mines on the rooftop, 2 front, 2 back, with 5 careful shots (1 missed). The man standing in the rain flinched at the gunshots, while his companion lay motionless.

Fox checked the thermal as he got ready to move into position, and the recently-occupied portions of the building seemed warm enough compared to the surroundings. Thermal could not, of course, magically see through walls, but the TIS was sensitive enough that he could see hot spots if someone was leaning against the wall long enough for the heat to diffuse through thin plywood and even bricks (if they remained there long enough). He could check for thermal plumes like venting from fires or poorly-insulated windows. Glass and water would block thermal completely but he wouldn't have to worry about long-gone windows or groundwater from this angle. If anyone looked through a loophole or any other gap, they would show up like a flare compared to the brick.

If someone were hidden inside, using the thick brick to shield themselves, he wouldn't see them. That said, there was no one actively looking out at him, and he drove up.

In the rear, it was all quiet for Kelsey and Tyler, manning the MG. Andy could see no other movement inside the building across the street or on the rooftops opposite (and still beneath him).

After they stopped in front of the building, the Mounties in the back of the LAV opened up the 2 rear hatches on Fox's command. Using the ladder, the still-standing suspect helped lower his unconscious buddy down to the arms of the Mounties standing below on the LAV's rear deck. Then the man climbed down as well and was cuffed on the deck of the LAV. Once they were safely inside the LAv's rear passenger compartment, Fox had the driver back away from the building and transported down the street to where Taras, Clarke, Lee and the medical personnel waited near the command post.

The LAV stopped in front of them and the rear ramp lowered, met by 2 paramedics in rain gear, carrying medical bags. As the mounties inside led their handcuffed prisoner out to Taras, Lee and Clarke, the paramedics went in and started working on the wounded man right away.

He was a young man, in his 20's, with a scruffy beard and unkempt hair that stood up in patches once his hood was pulled down. He shivered, breath steaming in the chill rain, eyes downcast. Pocks and blemishes dotted his patchily-bearded face.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Ok, then. We are not going to move any cleaning team inside the building until we get more information from the suspect. The place is rigged with explosives and we cannot risk the lives of our people if we can learn more about the surprises inside. As soon as we got something I'll go myself to clear the place.

The prisoner was about to being brought in. In the mean time, Taras, continued to give more instructions to the team over the radio:

...attention please...We are going to wait to find out more about the building before we move in...alley team continue to keep watch...Andy: Get an ERT on standby...Sgt. Fox: Keep watch for any movement in the thermal...At all troops: stand by for further instructions.

The perimeter was secured and somehow heavily reinforced with the arrivals of back-up. Being far from finish, Shevchenko understood that time shifted to their advantage this time. They were in position to make their moves and it was a better option to be on the safe side. A little bit of patience and intel from the insider could help avoid unnecessary casualties. More eyes trained on the house will help to locate any possible hidden threat getting nervous and making a mistake.

Then there will the the matter of clearing the explosive traps. Working from the inside and possibly with the tips earned from the suspect, the task will be easier. Taras would expect boobytraps wired to doors and windows as a way to protect the possible entry points.

After those thoughts he turned to Clarke:

We are going to need an update on the status of the WIA. Very soon we are going to deal with people asking questions, specially the "Hell's Angels". We are in need of absolute OPSEC on this. The only way to deal with this matter is in the high level. We still can make them believe that the americans shoot him while escaping. After all dead people don't talk back...

Same thing with the new guy, gunshot wound to the abdomen, some internal bleeding into the abdominal cavity, not life-threatening. They're both unconscious. We're going to evac them back to hospital now."

Well, Clarke. I guess we can evacuate the wounded to UBC. Everybody is in position so lets get information from the prisoner about those traps.

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #217):

Lights and sirens off, the ambulance with the injured prisoners pulled away, under police escort. There was no need to clear nonexistent traffic, and some element of concealment was desirable.

The remaining prisoner was brought out of the SUV. Without prompting he ventured, "okay, look, I wanna cooperate. I didn't have nothing to do with that girl, Understand? Or that chick the Angel capped? A few days ago? By the water?"

"I'll tell you what you want to know now about the booby traps inside, but I'm not saying anything else without a deal. Can I, uh, get a lawyer for that?"

It seemed that almost every sentence this man uttered turned into a question at the end. It was quite aggravating.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras got relief as soon as he saw a glimpse of cooperation from the suspect. He was obviously in distress but so were all of them. Not only that, he was in the losers side and didn't want to get out without a fight, or deal.

What's your name, buddy? Listen, we know well what's going on with the Hell's Angels and you are not one of them. But it is too bad that you were hanging around, don't you think? We are not the bad guys, remember. We want to help people around and bring this city back to normal. That's why we don't want anybody to be hurt by the explosives inside that house. Your cooperation will be much appreciated. From now on you are going to need protection also from Hell's Angels my friend...So I guess is your call...

Sgt. Shevchenko was playing "good-cop/bad-cop" with the suspect. Getting to address him by his name will help to win his confidence through attention. Taras wanted to remark the fact that he was really in a bad situation, not onky because he was caught but also because the HA now could be after him. An interesting sort of bluff. On the positive side he wanted to highlight the good-hearted nature of the Law Enforcement and their willingness to remove the explosives for common good and how this could be achieved with the prisoner's help.

In the end the police work was accumulating. Taras felt that the initial task of the team assembled by the HQ in Vancouver Island and put under Government jurisdiction may be losing his North in police calls whereas the true nature of their mission was a radical departure from this.

Clarke: We acted in a ruthless manner tonight but I don't believe we didn't have another option. In any case, I believe that we are risking the integrity of the plans while devoting our efforts to combat street crime instead of bringing the ideal of reconstruction back on track. So far, we are aware of the criminal element that the HA suppose and we were working in the infiltration and penetration of their structure. As far as we know, there is a huge amount of recce that needs to be done before we start a systematic crackdown. There is a russian nuclear sub sitting somewhere and a large amount of illegal trade of dangerous military goods across an unprotected border. I suggest to finish business here as soon as possible and concentrate in more important tasks like the effective elimination of the stickmen presence in Stanley Park and the recce of the rest of the terrain around.

It was a matter of retaining the initiative. Police work mostly relies in the reactive perspective. In the case of the team it was mandatory to gain the upper hand through gathering of information in a stealthy, pro-active manner to avoid confront bewildering experiences like the one just went through. They were lucky enough to have the right people and tools to do the job and that was a long stretch from the haunting ambush under the Lion's Gate Bridge but in the mind of Shevchenko this kind of job should be delegated more and more to the ever increasing in skill and numbers of the embryonic Vancouver Police.

The next day will dawn with a clear necessity to focus in the road map. Still, a nerve wrecking final reckoning of the Apocalipsys Now restaurant building was looming ahead...

"Ah, okay. My name is David Carerra.

"Inside the front and rear doors there's grenades rigged to go off. There were Claymores on the rooftops pointed down, but the ones covering the back and front are gone 'cause you shot 'em.

"Except there are 2 more set to go off by a clacker thingy, uh, to fire across the rooftops to the east and west, 1 each direction. Also, they used to get in and out by coming in windows on both sides of the roof, and the rooms you come in and our are booby-trapped, too. Not the windows, but grenades on tripwires in the rooms themselves so guys could come and go through the widow without messing with a trap, but if you didn't know where the tripwire was and got in through the window... boom! There's also another Claymore in the restaurant, pointed at the front window. If you pulled off the plywood to get around the door, they could set it off."

David had pocked, sallow skin, and greasy hair that stood on end from lack of washing. He also had strong body odor, the mark of someone who hadn't bathed in weeks.

Taras called a meeting with Andy, Rachel and Clarke. The precious information will help to give the proper access channels and details to dismantle the whole fireworks castle.

We are ready to move in now. ERT first to confirm that nobody still inside. I'll remove the traps. Will give instructions to keep open eyes to the troops watching perimeter just in case...

"Do you need any help with squeezing him, or are we waiting to see if his information is good before we make any deal?"

Clarke made sure she was out of earshot of their prisoner before speaking to Lee and Taras.  "Let's see how good his intel is before we cut him any deals.  If everything checks out, then we'll offer reasonable adjustment to his sentence." Clark grinned wickedly.  "He's full of it if he thinks we believe he was just 'hanging out' with the Hells Angel's.  He wouldn't know the traps that well unless he was in deep.  I say, reduction of sentence for what he's given us here, a deal if he gives us information we can use for a murder conviction on our Jane Doe."

Clark paused and rubbed her eyes.  "One thing at a time, though.  Let's get this area cleared and get our people out of here.  It has been a long night for some of us."

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

This being Vancouver, there really wasn't a drier spot to set up the machinegun! The perimeter kept an eye on the surrounding streets, in case someone decided to rescue what they might think was trapped comrades.

The ERT climbed up onto the roof and went in through a window. It was as reported, there was no one inside and clearing the building was quick. The dropped M16A2/M203 was recovered from the street outside, fully loaded and safety off.

Taras efficiently cleared the booby-traps from the entrances on the ground floor and the roof. Anyone could enter the building safely.

There were piles of personal gear strewn about, as if several men had lived there for a short while and then left in a serious fucking hurry.

There was also some womens' clothing, seemingly discarded on a pile of trash in the middle of the unused ground floor dining area (which has started to resemble a large trash-midden with broken furniture and empty food wrappers and plastic pouches). There was an M249 SAW (the US version of the C9/Minimi) upstairs in the front room. In another room was BDUs and sleeping bags were scattered on the floor. Another room held 4 ammo cans of 5.56mm NATO ammunition, 4 cans of 12.7x99mm belted ammunition, 3 cases of 40mm grenades, 2 cases of M67 hand grenades, a case of M34 WP grenades. Another room had an AN/PRC-119A SINGCARS radio set. Also left behind were several cases of MREs, the US equivalent to the Canadian IMP, although not as well-liked. There were also some lanterns, electrics and so on.

In the alley, the Harley Davidson motorcycle was recovered. It was a custom chopped job, a real work of art (now slightly dented).

In the saddlebags was a small mahogany case with a .44 Magnum Ruger Redhawk revolver, and an illegally suppressed Glock-17. Aside from miscellaneous riding clothes (a bandanna, heavy gauntlets, goggles, etc.) there was also a small partitioned container with what looked like cocaine, pot, and pills, a 26er of Jack Daniels, also a 2-way radio, NVGs and some shotgun shells. There was an scabbard behind the seat on the left with a sawed-off over-and-under 12 gauge shotgun, and in a holster strapped to the gas tank was custom scabbard for a 9mm MAC-10 submachinegun. A spare full magazine positioned so that the SMG could be reloaded 1-handed. An illegal suppressor and several spare magazines for it were also in the saddlebags.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras collected all the explosive devices and ammunition crates after being rendered safe, i.e. removal of fuzes, inspection of safety pins, visual inspection of packaging,etc... There was a large cache by all means, including some highly dangerous compounds like the WP grenades. Help from the militia and auxiliaries proved very valuable. The SUV with its large trunk capacity was a suitable transport but the suspension quickly noticed the weight increment due mostly to the ammo cans. As far as it goes, he would take of the tools of his trade while the most dedicated Law Enforcement people would be collecting evidence related to the possible victims and illegal substance charges.

As a final move to clear the scene, Sgt. Shevchenko convened the necessity to clear the vehicles as well. The LAV III will tow away the blown up humvee and the bombastic Harley would be spirited away. Tonights prizes will be enough to set up a museum of crime fighting in the grounds of the University of British Columbia. It also accentuated the dangerous nature of the enemy that they were facing.

Enough for today! Time to go to sleep!

Taras returned the shotgun and secured his own Smith & Wesson lowering the hammer on an empty chamber then, flipping the safety catch holstered the compact pistol back home. Inside the vehicle the stress, unlike the strong curry smell, will slowly fade away. He felt in need of some distraction but the radio tunning was useless. Clicking the CD player into life, Sgt. Shevchenko found himself cruising the city of Vancouver at the wild cadence of the banghra drums remixed with a familiar tune:

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Andy made sure that the scene was secure and that all of his people were accounted for. Once everything was ready, he hopped on his transport heading back to the campus.

After debriefing his teams, he sat down ad wrote up his after action report before cleaning his weapons and checking his kit. The maintainence was like a mantra to him and he felt the tension of the night flowing away. Before he went to bed he found the people guarding the wounded prisoners and asked to be informed when the HA had been treated and was likely to regain conciousness.

He left a note for the Commander:

Commander, after we interrogate the wounded HA, I'd like to "manufacture" some time alone with him. I'll reveal my affiliation with the HA and see if we can get more from him that way. We'll need to discuss exactly how we play the long game before I do this. See you in the morning.

Everything he could think of done, he went to bed and was asleep before his head hit the pillow.

Clarke was bone-tired after the long night, but wanted to finish up with her personnel before heading back to UBC.

"Who knows, Kelsey?  They've had years with no one really minding the store, and now they are recruiting deserters to cross the border with military grade equipment."
She sighed and shook her head.  "What this 'Angel' has may be the tip of the iceberg.  It would be amazing if we could solve the murder of our Jane Doe so quickly.  It would go a long way to winning friends with the community."

She turned to Andy, to respond to his comments.  "Andy, get some rest.  It will probably take a while for the prisoner to get out of surgery and recover enough to be coherent.  After that you are free to talk to him."

"Tyler, good job.  I'm sorry we weren't able to talk the Americans down, but I think they had chosen their path before we arrived.  There wasn't much we could do to turn them aside from it and still preserve the peace."
