Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

While the dantesque figure of the aftermath of the shooting was still fresh in his mind, Taras could notice that the helpless victim was approaching him in a dash for freedom of the previous gunpoint entaglement. The desperate woman was in the right track, firstly moving closer to the wall and then towards the man in uniform.

Shevchenko didn't expect the victim to walk but primeval fear is a powerful antidote able to overcome the most daunting situation. Being the only one closer enough to render inmediate assistance, the ukrainian soon abandoned his thoughts about moving to cover the back alley and instead advanced towards the woman:

I'm here to help you!

Military training kicked in in Taras mind. Extraction of casualties under enemy fire was a delicate business. Easy prey for hideous snipers, ambushes and other demons of the battlefield, the situation call for the ability to provide speed for the evacuation, protection and armed response if necessary. To accomplish this he needed help and for that he chose to call in the patrol that came along with him. Using the talkie he commanded them to bring the vehicle.

Andy grimaced, the man helping the injured perp was obviously not holding a gun, he wasn't sure that just because the situation had gone hot that justified him continuing to shoot. Instead he waited for the man to steady his injured companion and then yelled, "Freeze in the window or I shoot!"

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Taras met the woman at the entrance to the alley off E. Georgia. She collapsed against him gratefully. "Oh please... you're a policeman, thank you... My God, thank you so much! They moved a few steps aside into the alley mouth, so they were out of the direct line of fire.

Taras then started contacting the mounties waiting at the corner by radio to bring up the SUV.

The radio operator at the VPD station finally replied, and Clarke started relaying instructions.

Tyler aimed at the lower door, noting that it and the window beside it had been boarded up with plywood sheets and covered with graffiti.

Andy issued his order to freeze, and aimed at the men in the window, while Kelsey also covered them.

Pausing for a brief second at the order, the man then seemed galvanised. The one outside yelled, "Fuck!" while his buddy inside, also dressed in US BDUs, yanked on him hard. They sprawled inside out of sight on the floorm but not before those outside had a chance to shoot.

Turn 4 Tactical Summary:

Taras Moves at a Walk (10m) and Talks (to the woman), initiates radio contact with the waiting Mounties.

Clarke starts issuing orders over radio.

Andy Talks (yells at the men) and continues Aiming, Covering the man inside the building helping his friend.

Tyler and Kelsey Aim to cover the front of the building, and are in Overwatch.

Men in building Move to get inside, although Andy, Tyler and Kelsey can conduct Opportunity Fire before they're completely out of sight.

RCMP reply to Taras, establishing radio comms.

The difference between Aiming to Cover and Aiming for Overwatch is someone can be Covered if they are already visible, and any Opportunity Fire against them counts as an Aimed shot. Overwatch is keeping a lookout over a general area to engage anyone moving into line-of-sight, and is a Quick shot.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Tyler was starting to notice a trend.  His heart sank, and the blood left his face.  He felt as if his soul were falling to his ankles when he realized who they may be shooting at.  He quickly spoke up so everyone could hear.

"WAIT...HOLD UP HOLD UP!  FUCK, THEY'RE IN US CAMMIES!"
He barked out to nobody in particular.

"Try talking to these guys!"
he continued.  "I MAY KNOW THEM!  One was wearing dog tags!"

The fact that the wounded man had been wearing dog tags about his neck didn't click in Tyler's mind until the shooting gallery seemed to pick up around him.

Foreign troops, possible deserters, acting as if they were in charge, threatening the citizens of the country.  Kelsey felt a bit sorry for them, but it didn't affect her trigger finger or aim, as she resumed an overwatch of those windows.

If Tyler happened to know these guys, possible, but not too likely, it might not help if... "And if they in Canada, supporting the Hell's Angels, Essentially foreign troops supporting an insurgent government.  What then, Tyler?"  Cold hard truth there.  Rebels.  Deserters.  Supporting an insurgent or illegal group within Canada's borders.  "That one guy was certainly threatening a Canadian Citizen, the other refused to comply with Canadian police.  They are wearing a military uniform, using military gear, and it's not Canadian, do you understand, Tyler?"  Clear enough, one would hope, and knowing the background of these troops.  They had spent a long hard war fighting foreign invaders on Canadian soil.

All of it, said loud enough to carry, at least to Tyler, but considering the direction she is faced, hopefully to the building as well.

Action:  holding and watching the windows.

Andy grimaced as the man helping the injured soldier refused to comply with his request. He centred the sight on the man's chest and squeezed the trigger.

After he fired he became aware of a burst of automatic fire heading in the same direction and Tyler's calls for a cessation of fire. He remained covering the window both to see the results of his marksmanship and to see how events unfolded. He'd warned the man and then shot him, he had no regrets.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

As the men chose to ignore the order to freeze, Kelsey and Andy opened fire.

Andy's shot was rather difficult as his target was behind someone else, but he was certain the bullet hit the man dead-bang. He watched through the scope as they both fell backwards, out of sight. Kelsey's burst was a little high and off to the side, popping out sprays of brick dust and drilling a neat hole through the plywood covering one of the windows. The shots echoed through the rain-wet streets and dark buildings around them, throughout Chinatown and the East End.

Looking at the front of the building from E. Georgia, the top (2nd floor) had 4 windows. 3 were covered with plywood, the second from the right had no glass or plywood and that was where the men had been. The ground floor was a door on the right and large picture window on the left, both covered in sheets of plywood. The building to the right was roughly the same height, but the one on the left was only 1 story, meaning that there was possibly access to the 2nd floor from the roof (and vice-versa). Rainwater from backed up storm drains was just starting to get to the level of the kerb.

Over the radio, Taras ordered the Mounties to bring up the SUV, and they acknowledged, "10-4, rolling."

The SUV accelerated around the corner from Main onto E. Georgia, then into the ally mouth where he was starting to check out the girl. He checked her "ABCs": Airway, Breathing, Circulation. She seemed to be managing okay, perhaps going into shock. Her ankle was starting to swell as she leaned against the wet brick wall of the building, and the wrist she was cradling against her brassiere looked swollen, possibly fractured. It would take another few seconds to check her pulse. She sobbed, wordlessly. He could also see other bruises, one on her cheek, others forming on her neck and one on her arm. There were also some small burn marks on the back of her hands and her chest.

The police SUV pulled up beside him, tail end sticking out of the alley mouth onto E. Georgia and both front doors began to open. The flashing lights reflected off the walls and street in the rain.

Clarke continued relaying instructions over the radio, having to stop and repeat herself once or twice.  She felt she would be done in the next few seconds or so.

Turn 5 Tactical Summary:

Taras gives orders to Mounties, commences 1st Aid on the woman.

Clarke continues giving orders over the radio.

Andy fires one Aimed shot via Opportunity Fire, hits the target, then continues Aiming in Overwatch.

Kelsey fires a 3-round burst via Opportunity Fire, misses, then continues Aiming in Overwatch while talking to Tyler.

Tyler talks to Kelsey and those around him, asking them to possibly cease firing.

Men in 2nd story of building fall back down out of sight.

Mounties acknowledge Taras, bring up SUV.

Four more shots rang while Taras was discovering the extent of the injuries in the woman and the no less signs of violence in the form of scars and bruises. He ordered the recently arrived cops to take care of the victim and moved back to the corner where Clarke and the rest of the team appeared to be barricated. Being relieved of the victim's handling for a while, Shevchenko had a few seconds to think before moving out the alley.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

Clarke finially finished her call. "Be advised, units are en route from Victor Pappa Delta station and Uniform Bravo Charlie." Clarke sighed with relief.

"Take care of her!" Taras told the Mounties that were getting out of the SUV.

"Got it! Okay miss, it's all right, we're here to protect you."
She tried to regain her composure as the driver started helping her into the rear of the waiting vehicle, while the other moved to the alley mouth to cover the street.

Satisfied that the victim/hostage was well on the way to completing her miraculous escape, Taras moved into the street towards the corner of Main and E. Georgia, crossing on a diagonal away from the windows where the hostile parties had appeared.

Kelsey made her dash down the street, covered by Andy and Tyler. She had almost made it across the alley mouth on the north side (opposite where Taras had come from) when someone inside the building stuck the stubby barrel of an American M249 SAW (different from the C9 SAW because of the lack of optical sight) out the window pointed in her direction. They rested the bipod on the window sill, pulling back on the charging handle.

Andy couldn't get an angle on the would-be shooter. However, Tyler could mostly see the man, someone bare to the waist except for a Kevlar vest. He relied on his reflexes and training to automatically fire a pair of shots, striking the man in the abdomen and left arm. He fell back, leaving the SAW hanging on the window.

Kelsey made it to the car safely as the shots echoed off the surrounding buildings.

Turn 6 Tactical Summary:

Taras: Talks, then begins running across the street.

Clarke: finishes with her radio traffic.

Kelsey: Running 30m East.

Man inside building prepares SAW to fire at her.

Andy: Aiming and Covering can't take the shot.

Tyler: Opportunity Fire, takes 2 shots (this was his "held" action.

Mounties: assisting woman.

Re: Saturday Night's All Right (Sunday 15 Apr. 2001)

The shots from Tyler's carbine faded, and the man with the SAW went down out of sight. Kelsey braced on the hood of the abandoned SUV, rain-soaked bonnet cold underneath her sleeves. She sighted in on the dark rectangle of the window, NVGs flipped up on her helmet so she could use the scope.

Clarke started barking more orders into the radio, this time addressing the Mounties across the street from her. They responded in the affirmative ("...10-4, we're asking her now...") as Taras easily made the corner where she was located.

As Taras passed him, Andy started across the street heading diagonally to the SE. The best approach would be along the walls of the buildings along the south side of the street. His kit bounced as he ran, boots thumping and splashing on the pavement. He made it safely to the other side of the street.

They could all hear several sirens approaching from the north, behind them from where the VPD station was located. A quick check North along Main showed a police cruising approaching at high speed, lights going. They could hear another a block or so over, coming down Gore.

Turn 7 Tactical Summary

Taras: Running across the street, arriving at the NE corner of Main and E. Georgia.

Tyler: continue Aiming for Overwatch, front of buildings (to SE).

Kelsey: Aiming for Overwatch, front of buildings (to SE).

Clarke: Radio Communications.

Andy: Running 30m across the street diagonally to the SE.

2 RCMP: One talking on radio with Clarke, the other questioning woman (now in SUV).

Woman: telling Mounties about what's in the building.
