A Closer Look

1000 Hours.
Everett Crowley Park, off Kerr St.

Meanwhile, Conklin had returned safely with the Suburban.

After some discussion and insistence on his part, Conklin was released to do a foot reconnoitre of the possible bandits that were suspected to be located nearby. Taras wasn't happy because of Conklin got into trouble that meant the reaction team would be pulled off it's own mission of supporting the Lima and Hotel detachments. However, this was as good a time as any to investigate nearby, as the other detachments were not on the move and there wasn't a lot they could do to support them all the way over in New West anyways, especially if they had to fight their way through some unknown position.

If anyone could do a bit of a recce without problem, it was a Marine sniper like Conklin.

"Good luck, my friend. Be safe. We may come help... then again..." Taras joked. "Our call-sign is Romeo One, yours will be Romeo One Alpha."

Re: A Closer Look

Rob nodded his agreement at the call signs.

"I plan on scouting our immediate area before setting off to the intersection. I showed you what my plan was but we will see what Murphy has to say about it all. If your called away by the others then just give me a heads up. I can hole up at the safe house if the shit hits the fan until the cavalry returns. If need be, I can make my way back to base camp."

Rob looks at the rest of men milling about and addresses them as he sets up his gear for the stalk.

"I will be stomping around out there to make sure we are not being watched so be aware. Friendly fire isn't so friendly in my book and I'd hate to see which of us is the better shot. Keep your eyes and ears open. Who knows what I might scare up."

Turning back to Taras, Rob added.

" I will check in at each checkpoint or if I make any contact. Stay safe."

Rob checked his gear over and made sure his MP5 and M9 was loaded and ready. He hadn't put on his gillie yet and planned on doing so once he was hidden within the overgrown park.

Rob set off at a decent pace and once out of sight looked for a good place to get his gillie on. From there his plan was to circle the park looking for any signs of recent activity on his way to checkpoint 1. Knowing there were possible unfriendlies nearby, he was extra cautious and aware.

Call sign: Romeo One Alpha (Rob)
Actions: Moving to checkpoint 1
SVD w/3x10 rnd Mags < IN DRAG BAG > and < SLUNG >
M9-Suppressed w/3x15 rnd Mags <HOLSTERED>
MP5SD3 w/6x30 rnd Mags < CARRIED >
K-bar Combat knife <Sheathed>
3x Frag grenades
2x smoke grenades
2x cs grenades
3x Dumb-dumb grenades

<OOC> Objectives:
En route to checkpoint 1: Observe area for recent or present activity.

Checkpoint 1: Observe area and wait 15 - 20 mikes. Radio check-in.

En route to checkpoint 2: Check my backtrail and observe the area traveled.

Checkpoint 2: Observe foot bridge. If it's sacure, Observe the SE Marine Dr and Boundary rd overpass area IE checkpoint 3. maintain observation for minimum 30 mikes. Radio check in. ( should be hidden from target area by the slight bend in the Boundary rd.

Enroute to checkpoint 3: observe area traveled. Paying close attention to the residential area I must transverse. Again Observing checkpoint 3 area as a potential hide site.

Checkpoint 3: Create hide site on the southern end of the overpass. Observe area for patrols or other activity and once secure, observe the target area. Radio check in and monitoring.

Egress: Follow same general path for egress since unobserved options are limited. Continue radio check-ins at each checkpoint.

Emergency Egress: Scam to safe house location or Romeo one area by what ever route is available. Radio check-in once secure. Wait until extraction is available.

Re: A Closer Look

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #2):

It was a pleasant sunny spring morning. Birds tweeted, a breeze rustled the trees.

With a few last words and a radio check, Conklin disappeared into the heavily-wooded park. The first part of patrol was uneventful. The park was thoroughly overgrown after a few years of neglect, rapidly turning back into deep forest. The surrounding neighborhoods were also fairly wooded and were becoming even more so.

The radio checks went without incident.

http://tinyurl.com/3y3s5dl

Checkpoint 1: No sign of activity or habitation.

Enroute to Checkpoint 2: No activity on back-trail or sign of pursuit.

Checkpoint 2: No foot or vehicle traffic on Boundary. 1 person seen crossing SE Marine Dr. Overpass on foot from west to east, armed with a rifle.

Enroute to Checkpoint 3: Potential hide sites around Checkpoint 3 seem abundant. The residential area looks at least partially inhabited.  Smell of smoke, food. There is a dog barking, but it sounds like it's coming from to the west of boundary, where 2 ERT said they ran into 3 armed men (who didn't see them).

Re: A Closer Look

Rob didn't like the fact that the residential area just to his south was possible occupied and he curses slightly to himself. This means he'd have to cross SE Marine at an alternate location. Most folks either banded together or got overrun by those that already had, so small enclaves were rare unless they were a FOB or OP for some larger group. This was intel his team needed to know. Since the target area was so close, about 300 meters away, he had to assume this was all one group or atleast somehow connected.

"What's so important about this intersection that you'd establish a roadblock and out patrols to keep it? Is that your technical we've heard about? Well whatever it all means, Keep it up. You boys offer some job security. Better than watching that damn airport all day atleast."

Conklin questioned softly to himself as he slowly moved around the residential area to the east and south. Rob tried to find out which houses were occupied and by whom. He keeps his distance and tried to stay aware of any change in wind direction. If they do have a mutt he didn't want to give himself away by scent alone. Once he'd found what he could about the residential area he moved to try a crossing SE Marine further east if the area looked secure. He'd then move in cover west to his intended hide sight just south of the overpass.

Call Sign: Romeo One Alpha (Rob)
Actions: Moving east and south while observing the residential area and possibly cross SE Marine further east then planned.

Re: A Closer Look

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #4):

Gunny had made his radio checks without problem, which was a relief! His prior observation had revealed an unshaven man in Russian Motor-Rifle fatigues, carrying an M16-pattern rifle (M16A2 or C7) slung casually with no webbing. The breeze was weakly coming from the WNW at about 4km/h (at most) but died so unless it gusted and changed direction, staying to the north and east should be safe enough.

After some observation, he determined that there was indeed an occupied house on the east side of the upscale subdivision due to the fresh garbage and trash piled on the curb. A large amount of salvaged automotive parts (engine blocks, tires, wheels, radiators, glass, trailers, etc.) littered the front yard. Five partially scavenged pickup trucks (all F-150s) sat abandoned at the east end of the debris-littered cul-de-sac, hoods up and tires missing. Another two (possibly drivable) were parked in the driveway. There was no one visible in the windows but there was a mutt sleeping on the driveway.

He could also see four motorcycles neatly parked in the cul-de-sac outside the house. They were Harley-Davisons, fully modified and accessorised (chopped and decorated).

The other houses looked to be abandoned and indifferently scavenged (furniture and appliances dragged out and forgotten or set on fire, other trash littering the overgrown lawns, front doors left open, etc.)

Moving east, Gunny crossed SE Marine Dr. near Joffre Ave. and then tracked back west along the south side of the road. He determined that there was noticeable recent vehicle and foot traffic along the stretch of SE Marine but was unable to determine type or number other than one clear track was of a mid-size pickup.

Reaching the hide position at the southern side of the eastern end of the SE Marine Dr. overpass, Gunny settled himself in. He had a good look at the intersection to the south. There were four sandbagged bunkers set up there, probably built by army engineers to control the road and intersection but abandoned. The concertina wire and movable gates were gone and corrugated metal siding (CMS) stripped off the roofs, but others could (and did) still occupy the positions.

Parked in the middle of the intersection was a white-and-bondo Ford F-150 with the cab torched off. There was an SPG-9 73mm recoilless rifle on a tripod in the bed, pointed forward over the hood. He was able to see only one crewmember dressed in US woodland cammies (the gunner). Another seven bandits lounged around the position, mostly either carrying AK or M16-pattern rifles with a couple pump-shotguns and one with an un-scoped hunting rifle. Uniforms seemed to be mostly US woodland pattern, which wasn't surprising as it was common before and during the war.

Re: A Closer Look

After watching the area for almost an hour Rob and not seeing anyone come and go for that time Rob decided it was time to report and egress back to Taras.
Rob retrieves his secure hand radio and scans his hide site area before transmitting.

"Romeo one this is Romeo one alpha."

Rob said lightly after turning the volume almost all the way down to make sure it didn't give away his position. Once the reply came he continued.

"Romeo one be advised, we have eight armed personnel in the target location along with one technical. Technical has a mounted Recoilless rifle and is currently manned. No other heavy weapons are visible from the east. Ready to spot and call corrections. Please advise.Over."

Rob carefully observes the target area with his spotting scope for any sign that they overheard his radio call while he waited for orders. Checking to see if anyone suddenly checked to the east, Scrammed out of the area or anyone received a radio call within the next few minutes to warn them. As was his habit, he'd purposely let slip a direction and used this to see if someone was monitoring his net. His radio system was secure but nothing is ever totally secure. By playing the ruse of an artillery spotter he gave the situation a dangerous tilt hoping to spook anyone listening. He also hoped that Taras would understand or ignore that bit of the call.

Call Sign: Romeo One Alpha (Rob)

Re: A Closer Look

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #6):

With, indeed, no artillery to call in, Taras was a little confused. He got it but didn't know or wouldn't hazard a guess on correct artillery procedure and instead attempted to wing it.

"Ahhh... Romeo One Alpha from Romeo One. Roger your fire mission request. Stand by. Over."

In the mean time, there was no flurry of activity. No one appeared to take note of the radio transmissions.

Re: A Closer Look

Rob kind of grinned to himself as he heard taras's reply but he still kept a close eye on the target location.

"Romeo one alpha to Romeo one. Copy your last. RTB. Will advise when near your Pos. Out."

Rob waited another 15 mins keeping a close eye on the target area and his surroundings. When his wait was up he slowly stowed his gear. Washed the hide site clean of his presence and started to backtrack the way he came. He would again cross SE Marine well east of the biker hangout nearby. He remained extra careful about noise disipline since there was a dog nearby. Once he was back in the park and near Romeo one's location he would make another radio call.

"Romeo one alpha to Romeo one. Entering your AO. How copy."

Once he got a response from Taras he continued on into camp to debrief.

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #8):

Before Gunny left his hide, the man with the rifle walked down the stairs past him, then sauntered down the Boundary cut to the intersection with Marine Way.

Later, when he radioed from a safe location, Taras replied.

"Romeo One Alpha from Romeo One. I am having good copy! Hoping things went well. We will await your arrival. Out."

He returned to the waiting BTR and SUVs (UAZ-469 and Suburban) without incident.

Re: A Closer Look

Rob was staged about 30 meters away when he made his last call. He removes his gillie and stows it. After a quick glance at the ERT team to make sure no one was paying to much attention to his area he stands up out of the bushes he'd been hiding in.

"Damn boys, are we getting a little lackadaisical or what?"
Rob ribbed as he stepped out of the bushes with hands held half up, away from his weapons.

He starts walking the last bit to the vehicles once he knows they see him and aren't about to start shooting.

"If my ole scrawny ass can get that close then I'm sure those young bucks down the road can at least get within grenade range. We are in a park but this ain't no Sunday picnic. Stay sharp or someone's gonna ruin your day for ya."
He grinned slightly at the ERT boys as he walked up to Taras to start his debriefing.

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #10):

The ERT looked a little surprised, as did the ex-Soviet crew of the BTR. Taras didn't look surprised at all, and in fact Gunny had the feeling Taras had spotted him a while back but didn't say anything.

"Welcome back, Gunnery Sergeant! What did you find about our neighbors?"

The ERT commander welcomed Gunny as well, motioning him over to the BTR. "Good to see you. We were wondering what was over there. What'd you find?"

Re: A Closer Look

Rob lays out a map and finds the intersection in question.

"Ok, we must have scared them off when the others came though before but we have what might be roving patrols around here. I saw two different armed personnel roaming this area. my View was a bit limited of the intersection but you have a technical in the intersection with a SPG-9 73mm recoilless rifle mounted. One person is manning it the best I could tell. The sand bagged areas are manned with personal but no other heavy weapons were seen. In all I counted 8 at the intersection and 2 possible roaming guards."

He moved his finger north slightly to the Boundary road and SE marine intersection.

"This little residential area is occupied and a mechanic or chop shop is operating there. There was a few trucks in various states of disassemble here and two that looked like they might be usable. No guards that I saw although they do have a mutt. Four good looking bikes were parked here as well so it might be an HA house. who knows. I didn't see any vehicle or foot traffic while i was there so I have no clue if their charging a toll or simply guarding something. My little arty call was to get them to react if they somehow were listening in and they showed no signs at all nor did I see any comms gear but I am sure they have something in place since they scrammed before we went through."

Rob stepped back from the map to let the others take a look.

"All in all, they got a nice little surprise package set up down there for who ever comes along. The Recoilless being the real threat to our vehicles but who know what I couldn't see."

Rob paused a moment and then asked.
"Any word from the others or my boys at the airport?"

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #12):

Taras and the ERT leader took notes. Taras replied, impressed.

"That makes two likely occupied areas, including the one to the west of Boundary. It's possible this is significant; perhaps there are two factions present or two groups have combined. Hard to be reading more into the situation. Well done, my friend!"

"We shall await further instructions from Sergeant Fox, then we will continue."

The Mountie ERT leader answered Rob's question. "My guy's got the sniper detachment in-hand. So far, so good. They're set up in the Airport Plaza, in the Environment Canada offices on the roof. It overlooks the Fraser and the river checkpoint on the Arthur Liang Bridge. They're checking out the Troll positions there."
