Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

April 19, 2001
1100 Hours
Sunny, 16 C.

The conversation with Captain Astapkovitch having run its course, Fox and McRae returned to the vehicles.

Seth and Rachel made a detailed record, visual and written, of the various watercraft docked at the riverside. Aside from the submarine, all appeared to be privately owned fishing and merchant craft. There was also a police dock, with a half-dozen unarmed large speed boats and two larger patrol craft with machineguns mounted.

The CBC crew were interviewing the various crew, river rats and fishermen gathered on the docks. Kelsey returned as well, with a dozen home-made batteries and contact information for her friend inside the Bridge Troll gang.

Via radio SITREP, Fox was informed by the reaction team that a sizeable armed force had relocated to the intersection they'd passed through earlier in the morning.

Gunny Conklin, the US Marine sniper that was temporarily attached to Taras' command, had observed 8 armed men occupying the abandoned positions. They had various small arms, plus a pickup truck mounting an SPG-9 73mm recoilless rifle. This weapon, while not as sophisticated as a missile or powerful as a tank gun, was still a threat to a light armour vehicle like the Kodiak and of course any SUVs. A foot recce (recon) had determined there were at least two occupied dwellings on either side of Boundary near Marine Way.

At this time, all that remained was a trip along the return route of Main Supply Route (MSR) Kingsway Ave. Also, the reaction force was positioned to provide more direct support along the leg outbound along MSR Marine Way, and should be repositioned northward (possibly to ASR Imperial Ave.) to counter any opposition encountered in the other reported problem area, the intersection of MSR Kingsway and ASR (Alternative Supply Route) Boundary.

Fox nods at Kelsey "I agree we need a plan regardless of what we do. Do we know who they are? " Fox rubs his head for a moment. "The way I see it we can either hit em hard and fast or try to find a diplomatic solution, but somehow I don't think the latter will work. "

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #4):

Rachel looked a little dubious at the prospect of diplomacy. "I'm a trained police negotiator, but I can't see the point of negotiating in this case because their priorities are opposite ours. Plus, we have nothing to offer them except a fair trial."

"Before anyone thinks I just want to pick a fight, as an ERT my priority is to preserve all life, even that of the criminals." She smiled at the irony of the situation, how she was trained to act aggressively and even violently yet still avoid taking life if at all possible. "Still protecting innocent life is the highest priority and that's what we have to keep in mind."

She answered Fox's question. "No Sergeant, we don't know who they are or what they want. From the report of new motorcycles, I think it's possible they're affiliated with the HAs. If so, that's bad news."

"I'm in favor of the direct approach. You know what I mean, hoo-ah?"

Tyler didn't elaborate, everyone knew he wasn't shy about getting into a fight. The trip to New West and the market were interesting, but frankly he wanted some action. Talking to some criminals seemed like a waste of time to him.

"Let's see if we can get our mitts on that recoilless rifle. That'll make Taras pretty happy!"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Seth listened to the discussions and looked at the information they had received, which had now been marked on a map.

"We can't ignore these guys," he commented.  "We're here partly as a show of strength so we've got to do something about them.  My thoughts are to approach them and to attempt to arrest them as they have a military weapon in the recoilless and that's still against the law unless I've got the wrong end of the stick.  You can argue about assault rifles for self defence but a recoilless rifle isn't something that you park up at a crossroads to defend yourself!"

He scratched at his beard, conscious that to many people he looked like a biker in military uniform.

"And if they choose to fight then we give them everything we've got!  Tactically I think that do the following.  Firstly Gunny Conklin infiltrates close enough to get eyes on the crossroads where the checkpoint is set up and continues to report.  He should also be in range in case it kicks off.  I assume that as he's a Marine Sniper that shouldn't be a major issue for him.  Secondly the Hotel element drives West along Marine Way and stops short of the checkpoint and then challenges the men there.  At the same time Lima element cuts South onto North Fraser Way and gets to a position where we can dismount and then set up a flanking position to the South of the crossroads.  Also at the same time Romeo element moves forward to South East Marine Drive, somewhere around Kinross Ravine Park, so that they're good and close and hopefully able to see this building to the North West of the crossroads where three or four armed men were seen."

He indicated several points on the map as he spoke.

"That means that we should have them blocked to the West, East and South and that we can hopefully contain them.  There are three risks that I can see at present.  Firstly our vehicles are going to be heard, and possibly seen, while moving into position.  As the Kodiak is making itself known though hopefully that will be the focus of attention.  Secondly by approaching from three sides like this there is a risk of crossing fields of fire so we need to be cautious with any shots.  The main elements are approaching from the East and the South though so I'd put this risk at an acceptable minimum.  Lastly we need to coordinate this plan over the radio with Romeo element and that's never good.  Oh, and does Gunny Conklin have a personal radio?  If he doesn't then that's a bit of an issue."

He glanced around the other members of the team.  "Any comments, thoughts or questions?" he asked, seemingly not bothered by people's ranks.  "Does this plan sound like a good idea?"

Rob listened to the plan and reviewed the locations and streets on the map as it was said. More then once, he looked a bit confused and glanced at Taras. When the relayed message was finally done he took a final look at his map and turned to Taras.

"What's the primary goal here? Take out the position completely? Take out the Recoilless or just scare them off again?"

Rob looks to Taras and awaits his reply or for him to relay the question to Hotel.

"Oh, and let them know. I do have a radio."

Rob looks over the map while he awaits his answers.

"As for our goals, those are up to Sergeant Fox, who is Officer Commanding for this mission. Our specific orders were to recce the route and neutralise any opposition we find. We may request clarification from headquarters at UBC if needed."

"Personally? I would really like possession of that recoilless rifle. It is a fine weapon, assuming there is ammunition for it. It would be very helpful in the future."

In reply to helbent4 (msg #13):

Rob picks up the mic to the vehicle radio.

"Hotel six this is Romeo... umm recon. Over. Rob waited for a response then continued

"Hotel six, this is your rodeo but there are a few holes in your plan that I can see.

First we are leaving the northern escape route intact and unguarded. That is also the route to possible nearby reinforcement.
Second is that damn Recoilless. I can prolly take the gunner out of the picture and make it damn near a suicide mission to re-man it but if they move that technical there isn't much I can do but try to drop the drivers or disable the vehicle. Both of which will be dicey at best. Best way to un-ass the technical is to get the 25 Mike Mike to pepper the engine.
Third, we have to consider that in order to ask for a surrender we are going to have to get well within range of that recoiless. They have flat ground and a decent view distance to the north, east and south. West is partly blocked by the curve of the road. There is plenty of cover and overgrowth for the guys on foot to scurry into only to regroup later.

I think they are going to just pull out again once they catch wind of us again. You could dismount and idle up fairly close if ya'll stuck to the side streets if all their using for detection is a keen ear. But I'm guessing they had spotters about that warned them last time.

If we can only hit them from 3 sides I'd usually say to mine the hell out of the only route we aren't blocking but more on that in a minute.

All in all our best bet is to just destroy or capture the recoilless and then keep on keeping on after that. That will take a serious bite out of their firepower if they decide to re-man their positions once we are gone. If we can get them to surrender great but I'm guessing they are going to just take their toys and leave the playground if we don't hit them with surprise and speed.
Let me take the gunner out once everyone is staged and ready nearby. Once the the gunner is down everyone rush in and take the position and see what we get. Don't pursue the guys on foot. Just do all we can to disable the technical and capture the recoilless. If we can get a few to question great but limit our exposure to return fire by stepping up the threat we pose and  their confusion with each step.

Time table to follow.
I get into a good location to observe the intersection.
Team move into their staging areas and get eyes on target.
I kick it off by taking out the recoiless operator/loader.
As soon as I give the word that it's kicked off the west and south teams rush the position getting some 25 mike mike rounds on the technical ASAP.
We capture the position and any personnel and equipment we can.
the eastern position stays out of the initial rush to minimize the crossfire and have a stand-by force if needed."

I am sure this won't fly but as a backup to this plan I can lay a controlled minefield to the north just in case the technical can scram that direction. I would have to leave a 3 man team to man the clackers and provide area security there though. They could detonate and hopefully disable the technical at that point if all else fails. Over."

Rob unkeys the mic and waits a moment before turning to Taras with a grin. That should get some of the civvie's ears to smoken'.

From looking at the map and trying to understand Gunny Conklin's plan via radio transmissions Seth had a few concerns that the plan would lead to crossing fields of fire.  Gunny Conklin had looked at the ground more extensively than they had however and Fox and McRae trusted Conklin's judgement so Seth decided that he would as well.  Everyone had seemed very competent so far in the DRI unit and Conklin was no exception.

He double checked his RPK and prepared to do his bit.

In reply to Robert Duncan Fox (msg #23):

Rob looks at listens intently to the radio as he looks over his map. Once he understands that it's up to himself and Taras to form the plan he gets a bit more serious with his map. He can be heard talking lightly to himself and sometimes even disagreeing with some unseen person. After a few mins he motions for Taras to key up the radio for him.

"This should be fairly straight forward but bare with me. OK, there will be two assaulting forces, one from the east and one from the south. Romeo will act as a blocking force to the west and a small detatchment will man the mines to the north on Boundary.

Hotel and Lima will split up at Marine way and Byrne road. Hotel will head up Byrne road and catch Marine drive and  take it to Patterson Avenue. From there will idle their way to Roseberry Avenue and stage behind the last buildings before Marine way. Keep it sneaky like once your past Patterson since the possible HA hang out I reported isn't much further down the road.

Lima will head south on Byrne and catch North Fraser Way and take it to Glenlyon parkway and then get sneak too. Idle up to Fraserwood court and stage there. Both teams will wait at their staging areas until the greenlight is given. I will be on overwatch near Lima team and will observe and report.

Romeo will take up their blocking position just east of Kinrose street and Marine way incase the target scrams west on us.

The keys to this is to get to our staging areas without being seen or heard. Setting off the assualt with surprise and superior fire and capturing that vehicle ASAP.   I will be on overwatch before Hotel and Lima enter the AO and will keep you advised as you head in.

Once all are at their staging area I will attempt to un-ass the technical and provide some confusion to the mix. As soon as I know the recoilless is unmanned I will give the green light for the assault. Priority is the recoilless. Dissuade anyone and everyone from any fool ideas of manning that damn thing. I will provide suppression and support as best I can from my position but as soon as it is safe to do so, pepper that technical's engine with the twenty-five mike mike so we are sure it's dead in the water. Capture who and what you can but don't chase them into cover. Once the area is secure, Romeo can meet up with us and we all exfil north on Boundary to pick up our mining team."

Rob paused for a moment to glance up at Taras to see if he had any glaring objections so far. Seeing none, he continued.

"That's plan A. If everything goes right it'll work and we might get a recoilless out of the deal. Plan B is where Murphy fucks everything up and the technical goes the only way readily available to it. North. Boundary road is a shallow valley with wooded lots  and residential on each side. It's fairly straight but once they head that way there are few exits. The demo team will be setting up AP mines on each side of the road facing in and south to crisscross the roadway. Once the target gets under that foot bridge they detonate the AP Mines. If the target somehow gets past us at Marine way then this is our last ditched chance to disable it. Downside is that the recoilless is likely to be damaged or destroyed and they have possible reinforcements to their north. So lets do our best to stick to plan A.

If Plan B does go down, Myself or Fox will call it. Hotel will follow the target up Boundary and attempt to recover the recoilless while Lima provides cover from North of Boundary and South East Marine. Romeo will pick me up and we will meet up at the blast area to exfil as planned. Pay special attention to the South East Marine Drive area. There are 2 suspected HA hang-Outs there. If the demo team fails then we abort mission, Form up at the demo team and exfil. I Don't want them leading us to their buddies.

If the shit really hits the fan the fall back is Byrne and Marine way for Hotel and Lima and Myself. Romeo  and the Demo team will fall back to their original position.

Rob again tries to gauge any negative reactions on the part of Taras or the ERT commander.

"Any questions?"

Rob adds after a short pause.

Hotel's and Lima's route.

Romeo's route.

Gunny's position.

Demo teams position.

"I think if we wait, it could be days or probably weeks before we get around to them, if ever.

"In the mean time, we can't pretend we've done our duty and secured the route. Innocent people could continue to get robbed, killed, raped. Some fights we hav to pick."

It was clear that failure to carry out their duty weighed on her considerably, as well as the potential cost in human lives if they walked away.

She shrugs a little, smiles more genuinely, or at least nicely.  "I was from here, before the war.  This is my town, and they can't have it.  I'll take it back if I have to make friends with all the folks I was fighting to kick out all the damn yanks that think they can do as they please.  No offense intended.  They've had their way long enough."

She looks sheepishly in Rachel's direction, her hand trembles on her rifle, maybe a shot of adrenaline that has had no place to go.  Maybe anger.

"Course.. we have to depend on folks like Rachel here to give us direction, and listen.  Us old war dogs know how to fight, how to win, but not how to do it as police instead of an act of war.  We've shown the HA's before that if soldiers step in, their folks just die."

She looks away again, at her rifle.  The same rifle that killed two HA's in a scarce few seconds with no thoughts of mercy from the one who held it.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

April 19, 2001
1035 Hours
Sunny, no wind.

While the various elements were briefed on the plan, the CBC news team found a place to hide. At Rachel's suggestion, one of the militia was stationed with them as a guard.

Rob moved into position without incident, the LAV moved into its forward position without encountering anyone, as did the jeep.

As the BTR was moved into its blocking position, Arif reported some radio traffic over unsecure channels, likely the roadblock's radio net.

"There's a lookout called "OP West". He says he hears an engine but its gone now. He's not going to investigate."

Taras led the mining party (himself and two ERT guards) to the footbridge and placed the munitions, radioing that they were ready.

From his hide in the upper floor of the abandoned warehouse's offices, Rob had a good view of the intersection over a cleared lot that was slowly going back to being wooded. Fortunately, the saplings were only a couple years old and were only starting to get their leaves, so line of sight was good.

He observed that the technical actually had a crew of 3. The gunner had a loader who was asleep in the bed of the truck, and a driver (not visible before) lying across the front seat. He also counted nine others at the position, armed with US/Canadian weapons mostly wearing US BDUs, with a couple Canadian combats in there somewhere. The "radioman" who talked to the western OP was sitting half-seen in one of the half-collapsed bunkers on a plank bench.

Again, there were no gang signs, patches or tags visible.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The office was stuffy and smelled of mildew and rot. Rain and the moist Canadian air was allowed in through the broken windows scattered here and there throughout. The place had been ransacked at some point but many of the larger desks and tables were to bulky to move easily so had been left alone or simply overturned. The few furnishings that were still upright were dusty with a splattering of bird droppings ,broken and rotting ceiling tiles and more. On one of those few upright tables was what must have looked like a pile of refuse and moss with a moss covered stick wedged into it. Only Robs slow movements gave away that there was something living there. Overall it wasn't the type of hide Rob preferred, But it would do the trick.

Rob slowly traversed his weapon's sight to get a good mental image of who was where and how many. That radioman was especially important since they now knew they had outposts nearby and possible reinforcement.
He'd set up inside an second story office space across an half overgrown lot to the south of the intersection and had been monitoring it for the last hour while the teams got into position to assault. He was way to close for his own comfort but this was the best hasty hide he could think of that would provide a good working view of the intersection and within a good range for a shoot. He'd already memorized the troop layout, and his exfil route if things got hotter then he'd like.

He'd just glanced at his watch when the radio call came through that all teams were in place and ready.

"Then lets get this done and over with." he said to the abandoned office furniture that kept him company.

He adjusted slightly and put his sights back onto the technical's gunner. He was much larger then he should be even with only 4 times magnification. At these ranges, this would be very personal. Rob settled the chevron into center mass and adjusted his body to where no tension was pulling the weapon then keyed the mic of his radio.

"Romeo One Alpha... Comms check, Comms check. over." Rob said is hushed tones.

Once a response was heard from the teams he keyed up again. "Roger. Be advised I count 3 in the target and 9 guarding the outside. to include one radioman. Please advise on including the radioman in my objectives. Over."

Rob sat the radio down and waited for a response. He adjusted his body slightly and got his sights on the radioman then back to the vehicle. Developing some muscle memory so the transition later would be easier. He adjusted back and forth between targets a few times then did it with his eyes closed to check his alignment and was happy to see he was pretty dead on once he opened his eyes. It had been a while since he'd had to use his skills in this manner but he was happy to see that old habits came back with almost alarming accuracy.

Rob glanced over his gear so he know what he'd have to grab to exfil in a hurry. He laid sprawled across the top of a table, 5 meters back from the partly shattered window that provided his view of the target area. His drag bag was open and beneath the weapon and himself to counter any dust plume the weapon's overpressure kicked up. He'd staged his Pack below him on the floor. If things got out of hand his plan was to roll off the table and onto the floor to allow the buildings exterior to provide some cover while he relocated to a friendlier environment.

Rob continued to check and recheck his gear and plan as he waited for the radio.

There was a delay as the decision to fire or not to fire on the radio operator was considered. Sometimes this could be both a good and bad thing.

"All units from Romeo Six. Be advised am seeing approximately twelve armed individuals crossing the Southwest Marine bridge from the buildings to the west... they are coming down the stairs and walking towards the intersection. Break. Romeo One Alpha, do you see them, over?"

Indeed, Rob could see a gaggle of men sauntering south down the road towards the intersection from the direction of the SW Marine bridge. They didn't appear to be alert. Most had assault rifles, either Kalashnikovs or AR-15 pattern.

"Roger, Romeo six. I gott'um. Lets hope it's a shift change. Over"

Rob watched for the interaction between the new gaggle and the personnel at the intersection.

"If you boys are the shift change I'd expect the others to give you a rash of shit about something." Rob said softly to the dank room as he continued to watch.

Indeed it was a shift change. The newcomers replaced the non-technical personnel. The technical crew remained. After around five minutes, it was complete and the "morning" shift was on its way up Boundary towards the stairs.

The new crew was marginally more alert. As they didn't have any reason to suspect they were already under surveillance, they therefore pay closer attention to their surroundings.

In the meantime, Fox instructed Conklin, "take the shot if you can. I'll trust your judgement. The longer we wait, the more things can go wrong. Hotel Actual Out.

Rob watched as the new shift settled in and went through the motions of getting their positions memorized for the fight to come. He noted where the Gunner, loader and radioman were staged and started practicing shifting targets quickly. He wanted to wait a bit and let the off shift settle in to what ever routine they had developed.

As his radio crackled to life he grabbed the radio and answered. "Roger Hotel Actual. Stand by." then sat the radio down near his support hand.

Rob relaxed his body and got aligned behind his weapon. Shutting his eyes he adjusted his body to where the new technical crew should be and wasn't disappointed. A little low but he was generally on target.

"Time to make the donuts" he mumbled to himself.

He adjusted his breathing and started to take slow deep breaths that would cause him to slightly hyperventilate. As the sights slowly rose and fell on his target he never took the next inhale. The sights steadied over center mass of the gunner. He slowly started his steady pull to the rear and let the round surprise him.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob saw the impact and knew that target was no longer a threat to anyone so he shifted slightly and started breathing again. He focused in in the driver who was still looking around to figure out what he just got splattered with. Rob notes the wind seems to be gusting slightly more on the grass and leaves past his target. He added two click to his windage knob which he knew wouldn't make much of a difference on the impact point but it made him feel better about the next shot, which was most important. As his breathing came to a stop he started his slow steady squeeze to the rear with his sights centered on the upper torso of the driver.

Just after he felt the recoil of the round and the sights settled he watched the impact hit the driver. He then grabbed his radio and keyed the mic.

"This is Romeo One Alpha... Driver and gunner down. GO GO GO!"

He sat the radio back down and shifted his body so the sights settled to where the loader had been.

He know he was breaking one of the cardinal rules of sniping by taking more then 2 shots from a single position but he had to take the chance. If he took the time to relocate it could easily be to late. He hoped the shock of his rounds coupled with the all out blitz of the other teams would keep them dumbfounded just long enough. He could almost hear his own voice reprimanding some trainee on the stalking range. "Shot, shot and scoot, dumbass! How many times do you have to hear it?"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Tyler and the rest of the dismounts in the LAV affirmed they were ready to go when Keith checked in on them.

They heard two shots rang out, echoing off the trees and the odd building.

Meanwhile, the loader hit the deck when the second shot took down the driver. Rob couldn't see the radioman either, he seemed to have gotten the hint.

Several men started firing blindly at the woods, different buildings, and into the air. One round hit the building Rob was hidden in but it was obviously a wild shot.

The LAV started rolling, intending on turning right when it hit Marine. Arif reported that the radioman was calling for help, that they were under attack from a sniper, they didn't know where he was located.

To the south of Rob, Rachel started moving the jeep as well, keeping it slow. She didn't want to break cover until the LAV started engaging the roadblock, thus adequately distracting them.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

As they started rolling, Fox instructed the crew:

"Driver, turn left, ah, right on Marine. I'm thinkin' we can ride right onto the target but if not, I'll let you know where to stop and dismount. You can button up." The driver affirmed the instructions and dropped down, closing the hatch.

"Gunner, we will have friendlies to our nine-ten o'clock, on Boundary. 1 Jeep plus dismounts, 1 sniper in Ghillie suit. Everyone straight ahead or to the right of MSR Marine are hostile. Engage priority targets only."

For clarity he added, "our main priority is to disable the technical so we can capture the recoilless."

Fox made sure his vehicle helmet was on and combat vest secure, then manned the TC's C6 GPMG.

After a few more seconds the slow-moving Kodiak turned right, swinging onto Marine Way. The top-heavy vehicle swayed a little and the passengers in the back swayed with it. The video screen in the back showed the gunner's view, and they could see Marine stretching away to the west.

Spotting the technical, Fox called out, "Gunner, target: armed technical, 270 degrees."

Looking through the main sight, Chris acquired the target while replying, "on!"

"Select seven-six-two coax, fire!"

Selecting the co-axial machinegun with a flick of his thumb on the selector switch he pressed the trigger on the joystick. "Firing!"

He fired a long burst at the technical. It was dead on target and several rounds struck the front grille, smashing it in. Several more punctured the front wheels. Although there was no cinematic mini-explosion as the tires were shredded, Rob could see that the air would leak out of them in seconds.

"On target.... Cease firing." Chris eased off the trigger, satisfied.

Everyone in the intersection froze up in indecision, there was a lot of yelling. After a moment's confusion, two men picked up LAW rockets and prepped them to fire at the approaching vehicle.

Rob watched as the vehicle was peppered with rounds. He was expecting the 25 mike-mike but it was effective none the less. Rob swung the scope to the side to scan the target area looking mainly for the radioman but saw two people prepping shoulder launched missiles. Training his sights on the one that seemed to be fastest at setting up, Rob breathed out steadily and pulled the trigger. Just after he felt the recoil he shifted fire to the other and quickly fired another shot. He knew the second shot wasn't nearly as accurate as he'd like but it might do the trick.

Taking his free hand away from the weapon he keyed the mic on his radio.

"All teams be advised, targets are manning shoulder launched missiles. Suppress the area. Repeat, suppress the area ASAP."

Rob went back to his sights and prepared to take well aimed shots at anyone still manning the LAWs or the radioman if he became visible.

The gunner that was closest to firing goes down with Rob's first shot. The Kodiak's 25mm main gun opened up, sweeping the target area with explosions and everyone ducked down. Fox opened up with the TC's C6, spraying the area, hitting two of the bandits.

The other (surviving) LAW gunner dropped his rocket and tried to flee north up Boundary. Two more men followed him, dropping their weapons.

Taras reported that a group of about 12-15 armed men had come from the camp to the west of Boundary and started down the stairs at SW Marine. When the 25mm started up, they stopped, confused, then after running back up the stairs scattered in all directions (north, east and west).

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Taking the corner almost on two wheels, Rachel had to fight for control as the top-heavy Jeep skidded through a large pool of standing water and mud. Regaining control, the Jeep sped north along Boundary. The intersection was to the north, with the LAV approaching on their right (to the east) along Marine Way. Taras was further up the hill on Boundary, north past the intersection.

On their left were thick woods, on the right were warehouses (where Rob was located) and then an overgrown field (which Rob was shooting over). Although they now had a direct line of sight down the road, it was clear that the defenders at the intersection were preoccupied and not looking in their direction. Seth couldn't make out any clear targets, although he could commence some suppression fire.

The railroad tracks weren't raised and so didn't provide noticeable protection while disembarking. Rachel continued a little ways past, then slowed and turned left on a side road and stopped. They were positioned behind an overgrown "card lock" Shell station. (This is a largely automatic filling station for large trucks/lorries traveling along Marine.) At one time the cardlock station was an open paved lot with a large fueling island in the middle with a small outbuilding tucked to one side, now it was overgrown on all sides by a fringe of young trees and thorny salmonberry bushes.

"Andy," replied Seth as he quickly clambered out of the jeep.  "Suggest Kelsey and I lay down a base of fire on the enemy position while you and Rachel sneak up closer."  Rachel's SMG meant that she needed to get closer to provide effective fire on the enemy.

"We'll keep them busy while you get closer and start picking them off.  That sound ok to everyone?"  He glanced at all three of the others to ensure that they were all in agreement with his suggestion.

If there were no objections or revisions, Seth then looked for something solid to deploy the RPK's bipod on that would also give him some cover while engaging the enemy.  He knew Andy well enough to be certain that his fellow Pat would pick a route that wouldn't cross Seth and Kelsey's arc of fire.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The two pairs leap-frogged across the lot, Rachel and Andy moving up while Kelsey and Seth covered. They weren't in direct line of sight so they moved quickly.

Meanwhile, the 25mm and MG fire swept the target back and forth as the LAV rolled forward. It was apparent to Keith that they were taking no incoming fire. If the OPFOR had rockets, they were now thoroughly suppressed. Rob moved down to the ground floor of the warehouse and exited the building. He started across the lightly-wooded area.

When Rachel and Andy reached the far end, they took up positions covering the ragged screen of trees between them and the intersection. As Seth and Kelsey moved up, two men burst through the trees, obviously fleeing the hammering their position was taking. They were armed with M16s, and completely unaware they weren't alone. Andy and Rachel had them dead-bang if they wanted to smoke them.

Referee's Note: Andy and Rachel are considered covering that area. They are not specifically considered to be Aiming (too wide an area) but can fire immediately as the men move into view.

Rachel and Andy are behind cover at the central island and collapsed prefab building, Seth and Kelsey are not but can be either spot this turn. Rachel and Andy have a "free" action due to their Covering actions.

Like Andy, Rachel was already aiming in the general direction of the men who came into view. However, she hesitated, waiting on Andy to give the command to fire. In the mean time, she aimed at the man on the left (who was on her side). Andy would naturally aim at the one on the right, as he was closest to him.

Andy swung his carbine to cover the man on the right of the pair. They were armed combatants engaged in armed conflict against the government that he represented. In Andy's mind that sealed their fate as they stopped being people and became targets.

He waited for the split second it took for the sights to settle and squeezed teh trigger sending a triple tap at the centre of the gnman's body mass. If the man dropped, he intended to sweep his muzzle to cover teh target he assumed that Rachel would fire at just in case her submachinegun didn't drop the man. He had no doubt Rachel would hit him, he just wanted to cover contingencies such as body armour.

As he saw Andy and Rachel start firing Seth changed course for the nearest cover, intending on finding something solid to crouch behind that he could then prop his RPK on top of in case he need to fire as well.

If both men were dropped by Andy and Rachel's fire then Seth intended to continue moving up to join them.  If either man was still a threat then Seth intended to fire a short burst at them, assuming that the angle he was to the targets didn't present a danger to Andy or Rachel.

The double tap smacked into the man dead-centre, and his body took a second to understand it was shot. Stumbling forward on momentum, he fell forward hard onto the leaf-covered parking lot as his legs disconnected. The rifle skittered out of his grasp and two large ruptured blotches from exit wounds were visible on the back of his BDUs.

His partner took the situation in with fear-widened eyes as he skidded to a stop. Realising that he was a split-second away from getting greased by the several people pointing guns at him, he played the best card he could think of. He dropped his weapon, knelt down on the needle-and-leaf covered ground and put his hands on his head behind his neck.

"Holy fuck! Don't shoot!"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Seth and Kelsey scrambled behind cover as Rachel took down the surrendering man.

Rob started across the now-lightly wooded lot. It was tough going, as the once-clear area was filled with saplings and thick underbrush. In his Ghillie suit he would be difficult to see even while moving and impossible to spot when holding still.

On Marine way, Fox judged the target was more than sufficiently suppressed. There was no movement or return fire.

Halting the Kodiak 100m from the target intersection, he put Chris in charge of the Kodiak. He dropped down into the passenger compartment, putting on his helmet and charging his C7. Pvt. Mahanadi looked on, nervously, from the comms station. He only had a pistol, as he was the detachment's comms operator, and didn't intend to go directly into battle.

"Sergeant Tremblay, you take Sergeant Hope and Private Sheeler and advance down the right side of Marine Way. I'll take Droz and Chau and go down the left. We'll leapfrog in 20m bounds, with the Kodiak covering from the middle."

He pulled the lever that dropped the rear ramp. "You first, any questions?"

The terrain down the right side of Marine Way was a strip of light industrial and office buildings. On the left was formerly a cleared undeveloped strip, now gone back to light forest.

He waited for Andy to decide who would move forward and who would back up Rachel.

Andy had been a sniper for too many years, he understood that Rachel was doing exactly the right thing and he admired her courage for sticking too it despite personal risk. Deep in his sniper heart though he just wanted to drill the target.

He sighed, I guess that's why they're paying me the big bucks now, he thought, to solve problems with out a 7.62 or 5.56 millimeter solution.

When she was done with one man, she moved over and checked the other one. "This guy's still alive! Not for long, I guess." She pulled out a pressure bandage, intending to perform 1st Aid on the mortally wounded man.

Keith, Tyler and Pvt. Sheeler found themselves on the right (north) side of the road. Beside the road was a 5m strip of landscaping, now thick underbrush. A small parking lot further separated them from a large run-down office/industrial building. An algae-streaked sign in a filthy window said "Kilby Florist". Most of the shop and office entry doors were boarded up with sheets of plywood. One broken-down looking van was still parked around 40m down.

There was no return fire from the target area. From the edge of the woods across the 4-lane road, Fox indicated they were ready to cover the other group's bound.

"Covering!"

Rob was still making his way across the now-overgrown cleared area.

At the Shell cardlock station, Rachel cuffed and searched both men. Kelsey covered her. Andy and Seth were at the northern edge of the overgrown parking lot. A 20m bank of forest and undergrowth separated them from the target area. They couldn't hear anyone or anything from beyond the thin screen of trees.

Keith, Tyler and Sheeler made their first bound safely, moving down the line of bushes that was once a strip of landscaping separating the parking lot of the large building from Marine Way.

As Fox's team made their bound, he called out "moving!" so that Keith's team would know to cover them in turn.

Periodically, Chris swept the Lovin' Spoonful's turret back and forth, firing short bursts with the coaxial machinegun to keep people's heads down in the target area.

Peering through his FNC-mounted scope, Keith saw some movement from the roadblock area. It looked like a man was trying to get into position to fire a LAW rocket at the LAV but lacked the opportunity to do so. Chris, in the LAV, didn't seem to see him.

"Kelsey, unload their weapons," he instructed her.  It was highly likely that they would be moving forward again shortly and leaving behind the two prisoners and their weapons.  It seemed prudent to not leave their weapons in a ready to fire state as there was a risk that another enemy combatant might flee this way past their position.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob watched as the teams started to move in. He knew They had things well in hand and that he needed to move before someone decided he'd worn out his welcome. Sliding slowly down from his position on top of a desk he gathered his gear and slung his rifle. Making his way around the debris scattered throughout the building he made his way west being careful not to slip on the moss and mildew that covered almost every surface. He found a suitable location near the corner of the building that had a small section of glass missing from the otherwise intact window and slid a table a few feet to line up with it. The table was a bit heavy but slid fairly easily on the almost slimy surface. This would give him a decent view of the intersection and make it almost impossible to view him at these distances. Rob set up his gear and settled in behind his rifle. He adjusted slightly to line up with the opening in the widow to provide maximum viewing angle. He started scanned the sector for threats when he saw a man in a low position with what looked like another LAW.

"Six rounds" he said to himself as he took one click of elevation off his scope and slowly emptied his lungs. Once his sights had settled on center mass of the target,  he started his slow steady squeeze to the rear and waited for the recoil. Once he felt the recoil and the sights settled he muscled the weapon back on target for a second quick shot if it was needed.

As Keith was lining up his shot on the LAW gunner, he saw through his FNC's scope the man get sniped through the chest. A bloody mist sprayed from his left side, indicating the shot probably came from Rob to the south. The next set of coordinated bounds brought Fox's and Tremblay's elements to the edge of the intersection, one to the north and the other to the south.

Calling in their presence and intention, Kelsey received a reply from Chris in the Kodiak that he was ceasing fire, and Fox confirmed the dismounts (led by him and Keith) would provide cover as well. Kelsey guarded the surviving prisoner while Seth, Rachel and Andy got ready to make their way through the thick 5-10m screen of newly wooded growth (saplings, bushes) and then advance on the target itself.

Rob gets the sights on to the LAW gunner only to see that his first shot hit. He starts controlling his breathing with even slow breaths as he starts scanning the area for threats. He could see Hotel team entering the AO and slowly scanned away from them to provide overwatch. With his free hand he hit the push to talk on his radio.

" Hotel Six this is Romeo One Alpha. Be advised. I have overwatch.  See if some of those boys want to fight another day. If not take up positions and i'll try to convince them. Over."

Rob set the radio down took out another magazine and laid it flat on the table next to his firing hand and then resumed his overwatch.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Over the radio Fox replied to Rob, "Romeo One Alpha, roger that. Out." Fox instructed all units to hold their positions.

He called out, "ATTENTION, ALL ARMED PERSONNEL IN THE AREA! You are surrounded, lay down your weapons and surrender immediately! If you do so you will not be harmed.

"You have until the count of ten: One... Two... Three... Four..."
"Okay, okay, we surrender, don't shoot! For the love of God don't shoot!" came the reply.

"How many are you exactly, living and dead?" "There's, ah, four of us left and three are wounded. Four more are dead."

"Lay down your weapons and stand up with your hands on your head. If you make any threatening moves you will be fired upon, understood?" "Yeah, sure, fine! Whatever you say!"

From the roofless sandbagged "HQ" bunker next to the technical the "radioman" stood up, unarmed. He placed his hands on his head.

"Lima Three. Stand by to secure prisoners. Over."

With Tyler covering the rear, Keith and Pvt. Sheeler covered the target. Likewise, Fox had his element cover as Andy, Rachel and Seth moved up in turn to the final cover before the target.

Looking out over the target, Andy saw that there was one guy standing (with his back to him) in a sandbagged position on the far side of the intersection near the technical. He had his hands on his head, and was wearing US Woodland pattern BDUs and LBE webbing. Andy could also see a motionless body lying in the middle of the pavement, blood pooling, and another nearby, slowly bleeding out (unconscious but alive).

GM Note: the guy who's surrendering is on the far right of the position, at the "HQ" flag for the technical.

Seth moved up beside Andy and Rachel and looked over the crossroads.  It seemed that most of the enemy troops were either incapacitated or surrendering, but that the status of the strong point on the southern side of the crossroads was unknown.  Seth therefore decided to move to the right of Andy and cover it.  He found himself a solid looking tree branch at the edge of the tree line to rest his RPK on and took aim.

He was conscious that there were some friendlies in the trees on the other side of strong point but if there was someone determined occupying the strong point it might well be worth the risk of firing on it.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

There was a bit of hesitation from the element that was moving in, but eventually they had to move or momentum would be lost.

Andy gave the signal to Rachel and Seth to advance. With Rob, the other elements and the LAV overwatching they moved into the intersection and cleared it. Quickly, the other elements advanced, with the LAV swinging around to cover the north, the direction the runners had disappeared.

There was one unwounded tango there, plus three wounded ones and four KIAs. Fox dispatched Tyler and Keith to help Kelsey bring the living prisoner and dead tango in as well, and the BTR roared up from the west after picking up Taras. Weapons were gathered up (mostly small arms like M16s, AK47s and a shotgun but including an RPK-74) and the technical examined.

Fox said, "okay everyone, good work. I've called in some mounties to secure the prisoners and recover the technical. We've still got to clear the intersection at MSR Kingsway and ASR Boundary. There still could be tangos in the area, but they're likely long-gone now. They could have warned any friends at the other intersection (if there) but there's been no radio traffic and they would have to hoof it up the hill on foot. Unless we really detour out of our way, we should get to the other location far sooner than a runner."

"Any suggestions? Comments?"

Rob packed it in once the intersection was secured and the BRT and LAV had moved up to cover. He called in to get a pickup and got out of his work attire, reloaded the magazine he had almost emptied and bagged his SVD while he awaited pickup. Once he was back to the teams he approached one of the wounded combatants and did what he could to stabilize them.

"We have any wounded?" He said to anyone in earshot.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Fortunately, there were no wounded, at least on their side. Some first aid was performed on the prisoners. There was a considerable amount of blood and gore littering the road block, although pretty much no one there was unfamiliar with how much blood the human body contained.

After a quick consultation with Taras, Fox conferred with the team.

"I think you're right, Master McRae, we gotta move if we want to maintain surprise. There's been no transmissions on what we believe is their channel, and Arif's been jamming them in any case."

Arif was examining the radio set and comparing the settings to what Kelsey'd already figured was the enemy force's operating frequencies.

"We'll leave Taras here to look after the prisoners and deal with the technical. Relief will be here within the half-hour. Then he'll catch up. He'll also interrogate the prisoners, see if he can persuade them to give up any information on their friends. We don't know there are more fuckers out there, but that's what the smart money is saying."

"In any case, we're going to head north on ASR Boundary, then deke east on ASR Imperial, so we can come up behind any positions at the intersection of Kingsway and Boundary. Anyone have a better idea?"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Poking around the riddled technical, Taras discovered there were 3 cases of 73mm shells marked "PG-9" (making them HEAT) and 2x cases of "OG-9 (making them HE). Each case held 3 shells, and a HEAT case was open. The weapon was loaded and ready to fire.

Fox detailed more personnel to maintain a 360 degree watch as they consolidated. Several M16A2 rifles were recovered, along with an M16A2/M2-3 Dual Purpose Weapon, a few AK-74s.

1x M249
2x MP5A5
1x M16A2/M203 DPW
4x M16A2
2x AK-74
1x Remington 870

There were several handguns as well, mostly M9s and Glock-17s with a .38 Special revolver and .357 Colt Python. There wasn't much in the way of spare ammunition except for a can each of 5.56x45mm loose and belted in the back of the technical. Several spare magazines, loose rounds and grenades were recovered from bodies and LBE ammo pouches. All and all, there was primarily US-issue equipment and weapons.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Taras made radio contact with the RCMP HQ in order to request back-up as to secure the scene. He would personally handle the explosives according to his experience while one of the Mounties would collect any evidence and intelligence from the victims as well as personal weapons, etc.

What a harvest! We fucked-up Santa's ride!

After inspecting and/or clearing the RCL chamber of any round the back of the pick-up truck appeared to be generously provided with a large amount of green ammo boxes. All of them were stenciled in cyrilic characters and made easy for the ukrainian to identify: Projectiles for the recoiless rifle in HEAT and HE variations.

The ordnance appeared to be in good shape. More than the recoiless rifle itself, the ex Lt. was more familiar with the ammo as it was the same as that of the BMP-1  and there were no few ocassions where the sapper squad was sent to clear UXO's from training grounds. With the corner of the eye Taras noted a vast array of weapons being removed and collected by the RCMP Officers.

The AKSU was resting faithful on his lap. With a dark blue belch of fumes the UAZ jumped forward swerving a little before hitting the straight line.

So, where are we going?

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The group started moving out, with the Jeep (Seth, Andy and Kelsey) in the lead, the Kodiak in the middle and the UAZ (Taras, Rob and Keith) in the rear. The news van was parked next to the BTR for protection. Rachel questioned the unwounded bandits inside the APC one at a time, while the other wounded ones were treated.

No sooner had they started to pull out did they hear the sounds of an un-muffled motorcycle start up somewhere to the NE, then speed off north. Obviously, someone was taking the opportunity to go warn their confederates somewhere north that something had happened, and gave up trying to use the radio (which was jammed)

"Ah shit," muttered Fox up in the LAV's TC position. This wasn't good, it meant that someone would soon be aware of their arrival. He got on the radio over the secure team channel.

"This is Hotel Actual to all units. Be advised our presence is compromised. Break. New route as follows: turn East at ASR Romeo (Rumble St.), then north on ASR Papa (Pattison). About a block from ASR India dismount and proceed with caution. I'd rather we arrive late than roll into an ambush! Break. Will advise Charlie One (UBC Ops). Over."

Taras was in quick staccato shifting gears, answering on the radio and trying to keep to the road while looking for signs of activity in the surroundings. The BTR was left behind. Not a pretty picture for an enemy too well equipped to deal with soft skinned vehicles.

I hope that damned Fox knows what he's doing! He said looking to no one in particular while making sure that the AKSU stood on his lap at easy grasp.

"Great," muttered Seth to Andy and Kelsey.  "They've been warned we're on our way!"

He was still hyped up from the previous skirmish however and hadn't yet fired his RPK so a part of him, he had to admit to himself, hoped that the enemy would decide to make a stand rather than simply run away.  He felt the need to prove himself to his new colleagues, both those he'd fought with before and those he'd only just met.

He kept a watch out as Kelsey drove, trusting that she knew the new route Fox had advised.

Kelsey grabbed the handset as she drove. "Ah... Hotel Six from Lima Wun. I have good copy, over."

She checked that her carbine and the radio were within easy grabbing distance if they had to bail.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The column made it to Rumble without eating any RPGs. They turned right, rolled down to Patterson. About halfway down, the radio crackled again on the secure channel. It was Rachel.

"Hotel Six from Lima Eleven, over."

Fox replied, "Lima Eleven this is Hotel Six, go ahead. Over."

"Ahhh... I got some worthwhile intel from those bozos that surrendered. They are part of a loose gang of mercenaries made up of deserters. They get guns, heavy weapons, bikes, gold and drugs from someone he won't say, but I'll bet are the Hotel Alphas. He doesn't say why. If I had to say, part is that this is the farm team, if you know what I mean.

"He also says there's a second group camped out at Metrotown, in the Holiday Inn Express by the Skytrain tracks.

"There's about thirty in number, various small arms, a couple MGs and RPGs. Also, they got a twin cannon of some kind mounted on a flatbed truck. They have lookouts on the BC Tel building at Boundary and Kingsway and others down the other way on Kingsway keeping watch. They hit people as they pass the mall. He doesn't know what they'll do if they get warned, but he thinks they'll run. Did you copy all that? Also, our relief should be here within ten mikes. Over."

There was a pause before Fox replied. "Uh, yeah, I got solid copy on that intel and your relief. Keep me updated. Out."

Fox called an immediate halt and climbed down from the Kodiak to talk to Andy, Taras and the others. "So what do you guys think? We're a little ways from Metrotown. Do we want to dismount here and proceed on foot or with the vehicles? Check out their HQ or their observation posts?"

I say call it a day. Remove the bodies, get the media to film the entire scene with all the weapons and score some propaganda. We have a good starting point to move against those punks. Still, we have the problem with the airport. We don't have the ability to run two battles at the same time.

Conklin mulled over the information before speaking.

"Well they only have 2 choices and that's to lay a hasty ambush and stand their ground or scatter. I'm  guess they'll scatter if given half a chance. Problem is, they now have reinforcements at our rear and we no longer have the element of surprise. I'd have to agree with Taras here. We no longer have the upper-hand and if they can rally those reinforcements we scared off earlier then we're in for a world of shit. But it's not our show to run."

Rob continued watching the road behind them awaiting whatever came.

Smiling, Fox agreed.

"Yeah, we can either chase them down, or hope we don't run into an ambush. All the while, we hope those stragglers aren't coming up on our rear. Sure, let's call this in and call it a day. Maybe we can conduct some kind of covert surveillance of the area after we deal with the Airport. Let's head home. Back the way we came down Boundary, maybe we can run into some of those peckerwoods if they're following us."

He hefted his rifle, preparing to re-mount and roll out.

I smell Hell's Angels business. Eventually we are going to face them as we get rid of their friends. We have a priority over the airport but I wouldn't discount a covert surveillance with the intel we got from the prisoners. I suggest to go back to University grounds and report to the civilian authority. I hope Trish will make a nice TV report on today's catch.

Taras turned around the jeep and headed for home.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Seth felt a mix of emotions at the decision to head back to base.  Part of him was frustrated that he hadn't had the opportunity to prove himself, he hadn't even fired a shot in anger during the recent skirmish, but another part of him was conscious that the patrol had succeeded in several objectives without taking any casualties in return and that pushing on further made no sense.

It was the right decision to return to base and Seth knew it but that didn't stop him being grumpy about it!

He kept a watch out on the return, conscious that now was not the time to drop their vigilance.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

With apparently not much to be gained and a considerable amount to be lost, the unit got turned around on Imperial (ASR India) and headed home, going west on eventually what would become West 49th. In the mean time, relief arrived to take the prisoners and technical off Rachel's hands.

Arriving safely at UBC, the team met up for a quick debrief. The Faculty's leadership (Kwan, Khandola and Belanger) as well as Lt. Cdr. Clarke-Sullivan were pleased at how well things went, overall. The last unfinished task (clearing MSR Kilo) was minor in that one significant force had been overcome and at least one MSR (Mike) had been cleared.

It was early afternoon when the briefing was finished, unless anyone had anything to add.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

During the afternoon, the prisoners and captured material came in for processing. While their victory was real and apparent, there was still some apparent unfinished business that needed taking care of. Not just the possibility of another roadblock, but the airport.

Some lunch was rustled up to keep people fed. There wasn't much, just some sandwiches and cold milk, but welcome enough for people who'd been on the road since 0700 or so.

Belanger suggested to Andy and Rob that it might be a good idea to re-unite with the scout/sniper unit that had the northern bridge and Bridge Troll positions under surveillance. They were under the command of an RCMP marksman for the mean time but they had started the day under Rob's guidance.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

After the overall review of the days mission, Sgt. Shevchenko addressed the raising concerns regarding the future operations:

Metropolis seems to be self contained now. Is obviously a "no-go" area but they got a bloody nose and I don't think they'll be happy to venture too far. They must be on "damage control" mode.

Now, the Airport is a more serious concern. It seems that city of New Westminster will not be too helpful and we have a time sensitive strategic location that needs to be occupied as soon as possible. I do have a contingency plan based on a full scale military operation. A decision needs to be made in order to prepare training and equipment.
