Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The office was stuffy and smelled of mildew and rot. Rain and the moist Canadian air was allowed in through the broken windows scattered here and there throughout. The place had been ransacked at some point but many of the larger desks and tables were to bulky to move easily so had been left alone or simply overturned. The few furnishings that were still upright were dusty with a splattering of bird droppings ,broken and rotting ceiling tiles and more. On one of those few upright tables was what must have looked like a pile of refuse and moss with a moss covered stick wedged into it. Only Robs slow movements gave away that there was something living there. Overall it wasn't the type of hide Rob preferred, But it would do the trick.

Rob slowly traversed his weapon's sight to get a good mental image of who was where and how many. That radioman was especially important since they now knew they had outposts nearby and possible reinforcement.
He'd set up inside an second story office space across an half overgrown lot to the south of the intersection and had been monitoring it for the last hour while the teams got into position to assault. He was way to close for his own comfort but this was the best hasty hide he could think of that would provide a good working view of the intersection and within a good range for a shoot. He'd already memorized the troop layout, and his exfil route if things got hotter then he'd like.

He'd just glanced at his watch when the radio call came through that all teams were in place and ready.

"Then lets get this done and over with." he said to the abandoned office furniture that kept him company.

He adjusted slightly and put his sights back onto the technical's gunner. He was much larger then he should be even with only 4 times magnification. At these ranges, this would be very personal. Rob settled the chevron into center mass and adjusted his body to where no tension was pulling the weapon then keyed the mic of his radio.

"Romeo One Alpha... Comms check, Comms check. over." Rob said is hushed tones.

Once a response was heard from the teams he keyed up again. "Roger. Be advised I count 3 in the target and 9 guarding the outside. to include one radioman. Please advise on including the radioman in my objectives. Over."

Rob sat the radio down and waited for a response. He adjusted his body slightly and got his sights on the radioman then back to the vehicle. Developing some muscle memory so the transition later would be easier. He adjusted back and forth between targets a few times then did it with his eyes closed to check his alignment and was happy to see he was pretty dead on once he opened his eyes. It had been a while since he'd had to use his skills in this manner but he was happy to see that old habits came back with almost alarming accuracy.

Rob glanced over his gear so he know what he'd have to grab to exfil in a hurry. He laid sprawled across the top of a table, 5 meters back from the partly shattered window that provided his view of the target area. His drag bag was open and beneath the weapon and himself to counter any dust plume the weapon's overpressure kicked up. He'd staged his Pack below him on the floor. If things got out of hand his plan was to roll off the table and onto the floor to allow the buildings exterior to provide some cover while he relocated to a friendlier environment.

Rob continued to check and recheck his gear and plan as he waited for the radio.

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #40):

Taras responded to Rob.

"Romeo One Alpha from Romeo Six. Over."

"Please stand by, over."

While Rob waited for an answer, he transmitted to Fox.

"Break. Hotel Six from Romeo Six. Is there a holdup? Break. I advise Romeo One Alpha neutralises the radio operator. Break What do you advise? Over."

At this point, the call was in Fox's hands.

Seth detached the drum mag from his RPK and checked that the light machinegun was working correctly.  He worked the action on the empty weapon, displaying his familiarity with it, and checked that the drum mag was feeding correctly before ensuring that the safety catch was engaged and reloading the drum mag.

He then kept a look out, cautious that there might well be some other enemy observation points that they were unaware of.

"Good to go," he announced to those around him.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

There was a delay as the decision to fire or not to fire on the radio operator was considered. Sometimes this could be both a good and bad thing.

"All units from Romeo Six. Be advised am seeing approximately twelve armed individuals crossing the Southwest Marine bridge from the buildings to the west... they are coming down the stairs and walking towards the intersection. Break. Romeo One Alpha, do you see them, over?"

Indeed, Rob could see a gaggle of men sauntering south down the road towards the intersection from the direction of the SW Marine bridge. They didn't appear to be alert. Most had assault rifles, either Kalashnikovs or AR-15 pattern.

Rob shifted his body slightly to bring the new targets into his rather narrowed view.
He scanned the targets making note of anything that would set one out as a potential threat and then reached for the radio.

"Roger, Romeo six. I gott'um. Lets hope it's a shift change. Over"

Rob watched for the interaction between the new gaggle and the personnel at the intersection.

"If you boys are the shift change I'd expect the others to give you a rash of shit about something." Rob said softly to the dank room as he continued to watch.

In reply to Robert A. Conklin (msg #44):

Indeed it was a shift change. The newcomers replaced the non-technical personnel. The technical crew remained. After around five minutes, it was complete and the "morning" shift was on its way up Boundary towards the stairs.

The new crew was marginally more alert. As they didn't have any reason to suspect they were already under surveillance, they therefore pay closer attention to their surroundings.

In the meantime, Fox instructed Conklin, "take the shot if you can. I'll trust your judgement. The longer we wait, the more things can go wrong. Hotel Actual Out.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob watched as the new shift settled in and went through the motions of getting their positions memorized for the fight to come. He noted where the Gunner, loader and radioman were staged and started practicing shifting targets quickly. He wanted to wait a bit and let the off shift settle in to what ever routine they had developed.

As his radio crackled to life he grabbed the radio and answered. "Roger Hotel Actual. Stand by." then sat the radio down near his support hand.

Rob relaxed his body and got aligned behind his weapon. Shutting his eyes he adjusted his body to where the new technical crew should be and wasn't disappointed. A little low but he was generally on target.

"Time to make the donuts" he mumbled to himself.

He adjusted his breathing and started to take slow deep breaths that would cause him to slightly hyperventilate. As the sights slowly rose and fell on his target he never took the next inhale. The sights steadied over center mass of the gunner. He slowly started his steady pull to the rear and let the round surprise him.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob saw the impact and knew that target was no longer a threat to anyone so he shifted slightly and started breathing again. He focused in in the driver who was still looking around to figure out what he just got splattered with. Rob notes the wind seems to be gusting slightly more on the grass and leaves past his target. He added two click to his windage knob which he knew wouldn't make much of a difference on the impact point but it made him feel better about the next shot, which was most important. As his breathing came to a stop he started his slow steady squeeze to the rear with his sights centered on the upper torso of the driver.

Just after he felt the recoil of the round and the sights settled he watched the impact hit the driver. He then grabbed his radio and keyed the mic.

"This is Romeo One Alpha... Driver and gunner down. GO GO GO!"

He sat the radio back down and shifted his body so the sights settled to where the loader had been.

He know he was breaking one of the cardinal rules of sniping by taking more then 2 shots from a single position but he had to take the chance. If he took the time to relocate it could easily be to late. He hoped the shock of his rounds coupled with the all out blitz of the other teams would keep them dumbfounded just long enough. He could almost hear his own voice reprimanding some trainee on the stalking range. "Shot, shot and scoot, dumbass! How many times do you have to hear it?"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Tyler and the rest of the dismounts in the LAV affirmed they were ready to go when Keith checked in on them.

They heard two shots rang out, echoing off the trees and the odd building.

Meanwhile, the loader hit the deck when the second shot took down the driver. Rob couldn't see the radioman either, he seemed to have gotten the hint.

Several men started firing blindly at the woods, different buildings, and into the air. One round hit the building Rob was hidden in but it was obviously a wild shot.

The LAV started rolling, intending on turning right when it hit Marine. Arif reported that the radioman was calling for help, that they were under attack from a sniper, they didn't know where he was located.

To the south of Rob, Rachel started moving the jeep as well, keeping it slow. She didn't want to break cover until the LAV started engaging the roadblock, thus adequately distracting them.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

As they started rolling, Fox instructed the crew:

"Driver, turn left, ah, right on Marine. I'm thinkin' we can ride right onto the target but if not, I'll let you know where to stop and dismount. You can button up." The driver affirmed the instructions and dropped down, closing the hatch.

"Gunner, we will have friendlies to our nine-ten o'clock, on Boundary. 1 Jeep plus dismounts, 1 sniper in Ghillie suit. Everyone straight ahead or to the right of MSR Marine are hostile. Engage priority targets only."

For clarity he added, "our main priority is to disable the technical so we can capture the recoilless."

Fox made sure his vehicle helmet was on and combat vest secure, then manned the TC's C6 GPMG.

After a few more seconds the slow-moving Kodiak turned right, swinging onto Marine Way. The top-heavy vehicle swayed a little and the passengers in the back swayed with it. The video screen in the back showed the gunner's view, and they could see Marine stretching away to the west.

Spotting the technical, Fox called out, "Gunner, target: armed technical, 270 degrees."

Looking through the main sight, Chris acquired the target while replying, "on!"

"Select seven-six-two coax, fire!"

Selecting the co-axial machinegun with a flick of his thumb on the selector switch he pressed the trigger on the joystick. "Firing!"

He fired a long burst at the technical. It was dead on target and several rounds struck the front grille, smashing it in. Several more punctured the front wheels. Although there was no cinematic mini-explosion as the tires were shredded, Rob could see that the air would leak out of them in seconds.

"On target.... Cease firing." Chris eased off the trigger, satisfied.

Everyone in the intersection froze up in indecision, there was a lot of yelling. After a moment's confusion, two men picked up LAW rockets and prepped them to fire at the approaching vehicle.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob watched as the vehicle was peppered with rounds. He was expecting the 25 mike-mike but it was effective none the less. Rob swung the scope to the side to scan the target area looking mainly for the radioman but saw two people prepping shoulder launched missiles. Training his sights on the one that seemed to be fastest at setting up, Rob breathed out steadily and pulled the trigger. Just after he felt the recoil he shifted fire to the other and quickly fired another shot. He knew the second shot wasn't nearly as accurate as he'd like but it might do the trick.

Taking his free hand away from the weapon he keyed the mic on his radio.

"All teams be advised, targets are manning shoulder launched missiles. Suppress the area. Repeat, suppress the area ASAP."

Rob went back to his sights and prepared to take well aimed shots at anyone still manning the LAWs or the radioman if he became visible.

The gunner that was closest to firing goes down with Rob's first shot. The Kodiak's 25mm main gun opened up, sweeping the target area with explosions and everyone ducked down. Fox opened up with the TC's C6, spraying the area, hitting two of the bandits.

The other (surviving) LAW gunner dropped his rocket and tried to flee north up Boundary. Two more men followed him, dropping their weapons.

Taras reported that a group of about 12-15 armed men had come from the camp to the west of Boundary and started down the stairs at SW Marine. When the 25mm started up, they stopped, confused, then after running back up the stairs scattered in all directions (north, east and west).

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Taking the corner almost on two wheels, Rachel had to fight for control as the top-heavy Jeep skidded through a large pool of standing water and mud. Regaining control, the Jeep sped north along Boundary. The intersection was to the north, with the LAV approaching on their right (to the east) along Marine Way. Taras was further up the hill on Boundary, north past the intersection.

On their left were thick woods, on the right were warehouses (where Rob was located) and then an overgrown field (which Rob was shooting over). Although they now had a direct line of sight down the road, it was clear that the defenders at the intersection were preoccupied and not looking in their direction. Seth couldn't make out any clear targets, although he could commence some suppression fire.

The railroad tracks weren't raised and so didn't provide noticeable protection while disembarking. Rachel continued a little ways past, then slowed and turned left on a side road and stopped. They were positioned behind an overgrown "card lock" Shell station. (This is a largely automatic filling station for large trucks/lorries traveling along Marine.) At one time the cardlock station was an open paved lot with a large fueling island in the middle with a small outbuilding tucked to one side, now it was overgrown on all sides by a fringe of young trees and thorny salmonberry bushes.

"Andy," replied Seth as he quickly clambered out of the jeep.  "Suggest Kelsey and I lay down a base of fire on the enemy position while you and Rachel sneak up closer."  Rachel's SMG meant that she needed to get closer to provide effective fire on the enemy.

"We'll keep them busy while you get closer and start picking them off.  That sound ok to everyone?"  He glanced at all three of the others to ensure that they were all in agreement with his suggestion.

If there were no objections or revisions, Seth then looked for something solid to deploy the RPK's bipod on that would also give him some cover while engaging the enemy.  He knew Andy well enough to be certain that his fellow Pat would pick a route that wouldn't cross Seth and Kelsey's arc of fire.
