"Always best to check first," Andy said, "no need to buy the farm when we can be cautious. Seth and Kel be ready to make a dash if Rachel is right though and everyone is pinned down."

He readied his carbine and crept into the undergrowth. He planned to stop short of the clearing and take in the situation before deciding what to do next.

Zhang Rachel Lee:
"Yeah, let's do it! Just a thought... the LAV and our sniper are doing a good job of keeping their heads down as it is. Why not just boogie it across the lot now?"

"Yea, good thought," replied Seth while looking again at the enemy troops.

Andrew Montgomery McRae:
"Always best to check first," Andy said, "no need to buy the farm when we can be cautious. Seth and Kel be ready to make a dash if Rachel is right though and everyone is pinned down."

Seth nodded in reply.  "We'll hold off firing unless someone engages you.  If you get to a decent position unmolested then radio us and we'll move forward to join you.  We don't want to get too close though.  We've got the advantage with longer ranged weapons at present so lets not rush up too close to quickly!"

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The two pairs leap-frogged across the lot, Rachel and Andy moving up while Kelsey and Seth covered. They weren't in direct line of sight so they moved quickly.

Meanwhile, the 25mm and MG fire swept the target back and forth as the LAV rolled forward. It was apparent to Keith that they were taking no incoming fire. If the OPFOR had rockets, they were now thoroughly suppressed. Rob moved down to the ground floor of the warehouse and exited the building. He started across the lightly-wooded area.

When Rachel and Andy reached the far end, they took up positions covering the ragged screen of trees between them and the intersection. As Seth and Kelsey moved up, two men burst through the trees, obviously fleeing the hammering their position was taking. They were armed with M16s, and completely unaware they weren't alone. Andy and Rachel had them dead-bang if they wanted to smoke them.

Referee's Note: Andy and Rachel are considered covering that area. They are not specifically considered to be Aiming (too wide an area) but can fire immediately as the men move into view.

Rachel and Andy are behind cover at the central island and collapsed prefab building, Seth and Kelsey are not but can be either spot this turn. Rachel and Andy have a "free" action due to their Covering actions.

Like Andy, Rachel was already aiming in the general direction of the men who came into view. However, she hesitated, waiting on Andy to give the command to fire. In the mean time, she aimed at the man on the left (who was on her side). Andy would naturally aim at the one on the right, as he was closest to him.

Andy swung his carbine to cover the man on the right of the pair. They were armed combatants engaged in armed conflict against the government that he represented. In Andy's mind that sealed their fate as they stopped being people and became targets.

He waited for the split second it took for the sights to settle and squeezed teh trigger sending a triple tap at the centre of the gnman's body mass. If the man dropped, he intended to sweep his muzzle to cover teh target he assumed that Rachel would fire at just in case her submachinegun didn't drop the man. He had no doubt Rachel would hit him, he just wanted to cover contingencies such as body armour.

As he saw Andy and Rachel start firing Seth changed course for the nearest cover, intending on finding something solid to crouch behind that he could then prop his RPK on top of in case he need to fire as well.

If both men were dropped by Andy and Rachel's fire then Seth intended to continue moving up to join them.  If either man was still a threat then Seth intended to fire a short burst at them, assuming that the angle he was to the targets didn't present a danger to Andy or Rachel.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

The double tap smacked into the man dead-centre, and his body took a second to understand it was shot. Stumbling forward on momentum, he fell forward hard onto the leaf-covered parking lot as his legs disconnected. The rifle skittered out of his grasp and two large ruptured blotches from exit wounds were visible on the back of his BDUs.

His partner took the situation in with fear-widened eyes as he skidded to a stop. Realising that he was a split-second away from getting greased by the several people pointing guns at him, he played the best card he could think of. He dropped his weapon, knelt down on the needle-and-leaf covered ground and put his hands on his head behind his neck.

"Holy fuck! Don't shoot!"

"Hold your fire!" Rachel said.

Sprinting forward (into Andy's line of fire), she pushed him down onto his chest and  cuffed his hands behind his back.

"I'll search him. Someone can cover me, or you can go on."

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Seth and Kelsey scrambled behind cover as Rachel took down the surrendering man.

Rob started across the now-lightly wooded lot. It was tough going, as the once-clear area was filled with saplings and thick underbrush. In his Ghillie suit he would be difficult to see even while moving and impossible to spot when holding still.

On Marine way, Fox judged the target was more than sufficiently suppressed. There was no movement or return fire.

Halting the Kodiak 100m from the target intersection, he put Chris in charge of the Kodiak. He dropped down into the passenger compartment, putting on his helmet and charging his C7. Pvt. Mahanadi looked on, nervously, from the comms station. He only had a pistol, as he was the detachment's comms operator, and didn't intend to go directly into battle.

"Sergeant Tremblay, you take Sergeant Hope and Private Sheeler and advance down the right side of Marine Way. I'll take Droz and Chau and go down the left. We'll leapfrog in 20m bounds, with the Kodiak covering from the middle."

He pulled the lever that dropped the rear ramp. "You first, any questions?"

The terrain down the right side of Marine Way was a strip of light industrial and office buildings. On the left was formerly a cleared undeveloped strip, now gone back to light forest.

As Rachel started cuffing the prisoner Seth was up and moving again, pushing forward to join Andy, hopefully with Kelsey beside him.  Getting close to Andy's position he looked for some cover where he had a open field of fire past Rachel and towards where they believed the enemy to be.  He then propped his automatic rifle up ready to engage any further targets that ran their way!

He waited for Andy to decide who would move forward and who would back up Rachel.

He scanned the area to make sure that no one had the drop on Rachel and said, "Wait til we're out of the firefight before reading him his rights."

Andy had been a sniper for too many years, he understood that Rachel was doing exactly the right thing and he admired her courage for sticking too it despite personal risk. Deep in his sniper heart though he just wanted to drill the target.

He sighed, I guess that's why they're paying me the big bucks now, he thought, to solve problems with out a 7.62 or 5.56 millimeter solution.

Keith made sure his safety was off as he moved out first with his two people as he made for the right side of the street and first available cover to give covering fire if needed and gets a chance to see what they're dealing with.

"You got it!"

She proceeded to ruthlessly search the man.

As in the US, the Canadian equivalent related strictly to the right to avoid self-incrimination and retain council under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, neither being real priorities at the moment. Also like the US, exceptions could be made for public safety.

When she was done with one man, she moved over and checked the other one. "This guy's still alive! Not for long, I guess." She pulled out a pressure bandage, intending to perform 1st Aid on the mortally wounded man.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Keith, Tyler and Pvt. Sheeler found themselves on the right (north) side of the road. Beside the road was a 5m strip of landscaping, now thick underbrush. A small parking lot further separated them from a large run-down office/industrial building. An algae-streaked sign in a filthy window said "Kilby Florist". Most of the shop and office entry doors were boarded up with sheets of plywood. One broken-down looking van was still parked around 40m down.

There was no return fire from the target area. From the edge of the woods across the 4-lane road, Fox indicated they were ready to cover the other group's bound.

"Covering!"

Rob was still making his way across the now-overgrown cleared area.

At the Shell cardlock station, Rachel cuffed and searched both men. Kelsey covered her. Andy and Seth were at the northern edge of the overgrown parking lot. A 20m bank of forest and undergrowth separated them from the target area. They couldn't hear anyone or anything from beyond the thin screen of trees.

Keith, Tyler and Sheeler made their first bound safely, moving down the line of bushes that was once a strip of landscaping separating the parking lot of the large building from Marine Way.

As Fox's team made their bound, he called out "moving!" so that Keith's team would know to cover them in turn.

Periodically, Chris swept the Lovin' Spoonful's turret back and forth, firing short bursts with the coaxial machinegun to keep people's heads down in the target area.

Peering through his FNC-mounted scope, Keith saw some movement from the roadblock area. It looked like a man was trying to get into position to fire a LAW rocket at the LAV but lacked the opportunity to do so. Chris, in the LAV, didn't seem to see him.

"Kelsey, unload their weapons," he instructed her.  It was highly likely that they would be moving forward again shortly and leaving behind the two prisoners and their weapons.  It seemed prudent to not leave their weapons in a ready to fire state as there was a risk that another enemy combatant might flee this way past their position.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

Rob watched as the teams started to move in. He knew They had things well in hand and that he needed to move before someone decided he'd worn out his welcome. Sliding slowly down from his position on top of a desk he gathered his gear and slung his rifle. Making his way around the debris scattered throughout the building he made his way west being careful not to slip on the moss and mildew that covered almost every surface. He found a suitable location near the corner of the building that had a small section of glass missing from the otherwise intact window and slid a table a few feet to line up with it. The table was a bit heavy but slid fairly easily on the almost slimy surface. This would give him a decent view of the intersection and make it almost impossible to view him at these distances. Rob set up his gear and settled in behind his rifle. He adjusted slightly to line up with the opening in the widow to provide maximum viewing angle. He started scanned the sector for threats when he saw a man in a low position with what looked like another LAW.

"Six rounds" he said to himself as he took one click of elevation off his scope and slowly emptied his lungs. Once his sights had settled on center mass of the target,  he started his slow steady squeeze to the rear and waited for the recoil. Once he felt the recoil and the sights settled he muscled the weapon back on target for a second quick shot if it was needed.

Re: Road Trip II (19/04/01, 0800-1200)

As Keith was lining up his shot on the LAW gunner, he saw through his FNC's scope the man get sniped through the chest. A bloody mist sprayed from his left side, indicating the shot probably came from Rob to the south. The next set of coordinated bounds brought Fox's and Tremblay's elements to the edge of the intersection, one to the north and the other to the south.

Calling in their presence and intention, Kelsey received a reply from Chris in the Kodiak that he was ceasing fire, and Fox confirmed the dismounts (led by him and Keith) would provide cover as well. Kelsey guarded the surviving prisoner while Seth, Rachel and Andy got ready to make their way through the thick 5-10m screen of newly wooded growth (saplings, bushes) and then advance on the target itself.

Rob gets the sights on to the LAW gunner only to see that his first shot hit. He starts controlling his breathing with even slow breaths as he starts scanning the area for threats. He could see Hotel team entering the AO and slowly scanned away from them to provide overwatch. With his free hand he hit the push to talk on his radio.

" Hotel Six this is Romeo One Alpha. Be advised. I have overwatch.  See if some of those boys want to fight another day. If not take up positions and i'll try to convince them. Over."

Over the radio Fox replied to Rob, "Romeo One Alpha, roger that. Out." Fox instructed all units to hold their positions.

He called out, "ATTENTION, ALL ARMED PERSONNEL IN THE AREA! You are surrounded, lay down your weapons and surrender immediately! If you do so you will not be harmed.

"You have until the count of ten: One... Two... Three... Four..."
"Okay, okay, we surrender, don't shoot! For the love of God don't shoot!" came the reply.

"How many are you exactly, living and dead?" "There's, ah, four of us left and three are wounded. Four more are dead."

"Lay down your weapons and stand up with your hands on your head. If you make any threatening moves you will be fired upon, understood?" "Yeah, sure, fine! Whatever you say!"

From the roofless sandbagged "HQ" bunker next to the technical the "radioman" stood up, unarmed. He placed his hands on his head.

"Lima Three. Stand by to secure prisoners. Over."
