Rad Recce Run Pt. 1 (1600-2000)

Per the schedule, the team practiced at just outside UBC in various drills. Also, in decontamination and other procedures. This was all conducted in an area where it was fairly sure no one would be watching.

Coming up on 1600, the team got their equipment loaded and headed on schedule to New Westminster down Marine Way (MSR Mike Whiskey). The team's forward base was a high school that was actually in Burnaby, just to the north of New West. Because of its exposed position on the north side of Cariboo Hill, the area was fairly damaged by the nuclear attacks some kilometres to the north on the flanks of Burnaby Mountain. It had once been a mixture of forested parks and suburban housing. Now the forests and trees were largely burned out, and the houses charred and collapsed skeletons.

The forest area to the north had been a green belt on either side of the #1 Trans-Canada highway (freeway) and surrounding Burnaby Lake. Operations to contain or channel the massive fires that had sprung up had been coordinated from the school's gymnasium, the only wholly intact structure aside from the rear shops. (Other wings were standing but damaged by the mach wave and fires set by the attack, the intact shops thoroughly looted and torched by arsonists.)

Waiting for them was a crew of a couple dozen technicians and guards from the New West Police Department and Militia. They were busy rigging the gym for power and water, connecting it to the New West electrical grid and a local reservoir located on top of Cariboo Hill. As well, there were 3 friends of Tyler and Ed's, armed US Army vets (82nd Airborne) hired by the government as security for the site while the team was away.

The gymnasium was pretty basic in layout. It was a square 2-story open structure with a balcony over the main entrance area, also over where the changing rooms were. Additional side rooms provided storage for bleachers, seats, and sports equipment. The doors were not large enough to admit the APCs but they could be parked out of sight between the detached gym and the main buildings/shop buildings.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1 (1600-2000)

The team assembled by Sgt. Taras V. Shevchenko to conduct NBC recon and overall fire support to the mission found out that the amount of equipment to be carried for the operation was big enough to require something more than their regular jeep or SUV's. An available Canada Post truck was recruited for the shuttle to the shore. Bunny suits, weaponry, ammunition, radio equipment, etc became a taxing logistical effort but the old Grumman vehicle alleviated the task providing good room and easy access through its rolling gate at the back.

Once arrived to the launching point at the Yacht Club it took little time to set up the equipment on board and get on their way towards their next location next to the emblematic Canada Place and the Seabus terminal.

The terminals for the ferry connecting the downtown peninsula with North Vancouver were not unlike a submarine pen of yesteryear , if not bomb proof concrete bunker structures per se, they were well protected against the elements and indiscreet eyes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...&feature=related

The crew performed their first radio check and prepared to don their suits for the incoming sailing through the contaminated areas under the watchful eyes of the decorating owl of the abandoned Seabus terminal. When the clock indicated the right time, Taras ordered the zodiac on her way eastbound. A powerful searchlight illuminated the way. The crew will be on the lookout for floating debris and very soon monitoring radioactive activity and checking on the status of the ruins of the previously proud, if not free of misfortune, "Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing".

Nic also attended to the battle drills and was waorking hard to put on and off the NBC-suits. When he was satisfied with the drills and saw that the recce team is familiar with this stuff, he gave the orders to move to their FOB.

At the FOB the vehicles were parked out of sight from the streets. Unfortunatly, the doors were not large enough to parkthem inside.
However, the last preterations for the recce to the nuke-site began.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1 (1600-2000)

The powerful zodiac departed the terminal leaving a tell-tale of white foam. Each member of the crew had assigned a sector to watch. Taras realized that there was no time or ideal visual conditions to do a solid assessment of the damage to the bridges. Not only the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing but also the adjacent CNR railway bridge. Both structures had collapsed and the remains offered a grotesque spectacle. A gap with generous lateral clearance was negotiated while the geiger counters were registering the radioctivity of the area. At some point Taras was tempted to illuminate the ruins but he judged that it would compromise the mission and the return trip would be conducted in daylight with plenty of time to further inquire about the fallen bridges.

Once the catastrophic landscape was left behind the powerful engines were brought up to increased rpms in order to make good time and the RIB was seen speeding towards the <i.Cul-de-sac</i> conforming the area of operations. Radioactive levels were measured again and the watch continued scanning the shores for possible human activity.

Sunday 22 April
0330 Hours

If anything, the weather worsened from heavy rain to what was quite possibly a tropical storm, even the remains of a hurricane coming off the ocean. The damaged gymnasium roof leaked in spots inside, while almost gale-force winds drove a cold heavy rain almost sideways.

The team gathered in the wee hours long before dawn to receive their final briefing and patrol orders. They could only imagine how things were, out on the water.

Lightning strobed overhead, every few minutes in bursts.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

After arriving at the forward outpost, Sgt. Fox busied himself with setting up security with the American contractor (fellow vet friends of Tyler) and making sure electricity and water was available. Also, setting up comms with the New West militia and police.

He also cleaned his weapons and checked his gear. Wanting a little more firepower and/or a way to signal and mark targets, he attached the team's unclaimed M203 and a quantity of 40mm ammunition. In the morning he was ready to go, making sure some kind of hot meal was ready. Instant coffee in hand, Fox peered outside into the gloom. He shook his head in dismay at the gale-force winds and driving rain.

"Jesus, looks like a fuckin' hurricane out there! No wonder the damn river is overflowing. It'll make visibility tough, but hopefully any opposition isn't going to get out of bed."

"Kel, looks like you got your wish regarding rain. Not much contamination in the air with all this wind and rain."

Although they were only supposed to be going on a short patrol, he was mindful of the Blackhawk Down fiasco. He made sure to take some food and water, plus his body armour and inserts.

"Remember to make sure we got food and water, everyone. Also, we're riding, so we can have body armour, too."

He wasn't wearing rain gear, trusting that the Nylon jump smock would be waterproof enough for the day's outing.

Rachel helped with organising  base security. She talked with the New West cops.

Her judgement was they were trustworthy but seemed overly quick to resort to violence and intimidation. Not surprising, considering the circumstances.

She also made sure the LAV was good to go for the morning, mechanical-wise.

"Man, you got it. It's nasty out there!" She ate some scrambled eggs with diced green peppers and onions from a mess kit. Luckily, these were fresh eggs from the UBC Farm and not powdered eggs.

Keith was gunner for the LAV, so he spent his evening making sure the weapons systems were functional.

In the morning, he dressed in his USMC fatigues over an OD sweater. Keith wrapped the Kheffiyeh he picked up in Iran around his neck as a drive-on rag to keep himself warm and his neck and lower face somewhat dry. Done with inspecting the Kodiak he came in from the rain, dripping wet. His FNC was slung over his shoulder, stock folded to fit better in the turret.

"Ho-lee shit! It's really pissing down out there."

He didn't have a personal radio, so made sure he had one of the team's tactical radios.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

- Storm waves on 3rd Beach, Stanley Park.

Out on the water with the RIB, things were rather rough but not quite disastrous. The boat was low and stable with powerful engines, and it was sheltered water.

Still, there were 2-3 foot waves driven by the wind through the Lion's Gate narrows and Second Narrows to deal with. Wind and current pushed them too close to the wreckage and they spent a good half hour or more just navigating through safely in the pitch darkness and driving rain.

One of the two Geiger counters and a flashlight (but not the mounted spotlight) were lost overboard due to the furious pounding of the waves and the driving wind. Maneuvering around in the RIB was very difficult due to the need to wear both bunny suits and life jackets. Considering how rough it was, there was absolutely no other way to operate safely. For that, what sampling was accomplished suggested that radiological levels were safe in most areas but slightly elevated nearer the blast sight at the former Shellburn refinery.

The automatic pump kept the craft from foundering from the water they were shipping, and the weapons had to be stowed or otherwise secured to prevent them from being lost overboard. Getting wet wouldn't be much of a problem for the weapons but everything had to be securely fastened and tied down or it would be lost.

Finally passing the narrows, the water calmed a little and the wind died down a bit. Everyone in the RIB was exhausted and soaked, deafened by the thunder overhead and the pounding of the waves on the sides of the RIB. One good thing, it was almost certain no one heard them coming!

Taras and company were an hour behind schedule on approach to the RV point, roughly equivalent to the refinery (opposite the sulfur plant). The hills around them were dark, it was still pitch black out some time before dawn.

Early in the morning. Somehow, Nic managed to get a cup of coffee and was the first one in the briefing room. He looked on the map, his finger tips were running along the marching route.
It took a while until his team was present.
Nic waited a moment so that everybody is advertent.

"Good morning lady and gentlemen. Enjoy your coffee, hope you had a good night."

"The mission for today is to conduct a recce mission to a nuke-site in order to find out if there is radiation and the nuke's condition."

"Let's start with our patrol order:

Enemy situation: We have several information about gangs and other doubtful persons and groups but not reported in our area of operation. However, be aware.

Own situation: We have our FOB here, A quarter at the university and a naval QRF"

Nic shows their locations on the maps.

"Task is to go to the nuke-site where our specialist has to conduct his examinations and to provide a safe and secure trip for him. Well Mr. Bezhov, we are your taxi."

"Marching route is here on the map. Copy it to your maps.

"Marching order is BTR at first than LAV."

"Crew and Dismounts as follow:

LAV-III Kodiak (Lima)

Crew:

Major von Stahl  - Lima 6

Contractor Tanase (Driver)  - Alpha 14
Contractor Petrovitch (Gunner) Alpha 3
Contractor Pütsep (Assistant Commander/Comms)  Alpha 2"

"In case of road blocks, IED and other unfriendly events:

Road obstacles: BTR with shield is the first vehicle. If possible the BTR clears the way. LAV will provide covering fire if needed. If we are faced with an obstacle we should keep in mind that might be an ambush. If we can not clear the road. We have to look for an alternative route.

IED / mine: Depends on situation. Rule no.1: away from the explosion site. Either break through or stop and go backwards. If one vehicle is it and immobilized the second on has to do a so called crash rescue. Grab the guys and then away. Always be aware of an ambush.

Armed roadblock. We are not here to fight battles. Therefor we should avoid every gunfight. If we are hit (e.g. ambush) then it depends on the situation if we break through or evade and try another way.

Contact while dismounted: Avoid firefights. Especially in NBC-suits. Back to the vehicles. LAV and BTR will provide covering fire."

"At least the time schedule:

0400 Hours: Start moving

0545 Hours: ETA, mission specialist Captain Bezhov begins his examinations. Mr Bezhov, you've got maximum 60 minutes.

not later than 0645 Hours: on-site decontamination, approx 30 min.

0715 Hours: march back home

Team Link-Up, RV point at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody: 0500 hours

The team performed some final equipment checks, including radios, optics and radiological detectors. Kelsey and Nicolaus were pulled aside for a quick update from Belanger regarding some communications matters.

Actual travel was slowed some by the rough weather but not seriously. The heavy rain degraded the thermal and infra-red optics, and large parts of their route were underwater for up to a metre or more due to inadequate drainage. Fortunately they could easily ford the sections flooded by the clogged storm drains along Lougheed Highway. Many branches and other debris was thrown into their path but overcome with contemptuous ease by the massive APCs.

Finally, both land and water elements a little behind schedule, they all made it safely to the RV point at Rocky Point Park, to the south of Burrard Inlet. Ioco and OIR (Objective Ioco Refinery) was across the water to the northwest. There were no lights anywhere, only the darkness, wind and rain. Passing through the industrial and railroad area of the township of Port Moody, Major von Stahl was amused to see the remnants of Federal German flags flapping from poles outside an Audi dealership and garage.

Of the two linked-up elements, Taras' element was a little more worn-out (wearing bunny suits and life jackets while battling rough water) and had lost a few items of kit on the way over but was ready to proceed. The land element under the Major was likewise ready to proceed on the last bound.

This bound would be from the park where they met up with the RIB Zodiac commanded by Taras, to the refinery itself. Taras would push off and maintain a station in the middle of Burrard Inlet itself, ready to provide direct and indirect fire support from the water.

"Taras, welcome!"
he shouted into the storm. "It's time to do the last run, isn't it?"

He took control of the LAV's turret and started to search along the bay and his next marching route.

Everyone got suited up, even those in the vehicles. Both APCs had NBC protection due to overpressure, but when the doors were open contamination could still enter.

Nicolaus activated the weapons system and the FLIR targeting system. It was degraded somewhat due to the rain. He scanned along the water's edge, where the road they would be taking in was located. He noted buildings (mostly large private dwellings) and several private docks surrounded by thick woods. There were no thermal signatures along the route in, everything appeared abandoned. (The route out was different and more inland, and this they could not see from across the Inlet.)

He noted something interesting: two of the intact floating wharfs had small fishing boats (motor-equipped) docked there, yet the nearby houses did not show any heat signatures.

Next, he scanned the refinery. It appeared to be cold and dead, no noticeable thermal signatures other than variations of terrain.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

Well...I'm happy that everything seems to be quiet, or dead for the most part out there...That freaking nuclear explosion surely scared everybody from coming back. I guess the evacuation...well...Something very similar happened in Pripyat founded to house workers for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.  It was considered nuclear city "атомоград" Atomograd literally Atom City.

A Zone of Alienation was created to isolate the city. The radiation levels came down considerably, compared to accident of 1986, due to the short-lived kind of atoms released during the explosion but I couldn't say a military grade warhead would be much worst or not...

Taras observed how the Major, after scanning the surroundings and reporting via radio, prepared the recce element to move. For the maritime detachment there was no such a rush now. After being one hour behind schedule due to the storm the relative short ride towards the refinery didn't need to be rushed. The crew was already exhausted and decided to take things a little bit easy. While the ground element was preparing to move the ukrainian Sargent decided to take a look at the Old Mill Boathouse. The abandoned building main entrance door was covered by a large sign:

EVACUATION NOTICE

"For the attention of the residents of Port Moody! The City Council informs you that due to the nuclear attack the radioactive conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Government of Canada, its officials and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to combat this. Nevertheless, with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens in the nearest towns in the Fraser Valley. For these reasons, starting from April 30, 1997 2 p.m. each apartment block will be able to have a bus from Translink at its disposal, supervised by the police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents, some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with you. All the houses will be guarded by the police during the evacuation period. Leaving your residences temporarily please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water off and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation."

Fox gave a tight smile as he replied to Kelsey.

"You know it, Kel. Less likely we'll run into folks, unless they're really good. Damn rain, can't see a bloody thing even with night optics!"

He dressed quickly in the NBC suit in the back of the Kodiak. The rear ramp was down, there was no way to avoid rain being blown in. His vest and webbing was worn over the suit, ammo stuffed into pouches.

Still in the back of the Kodiak he listened to Major von Stahl's briefing, nodding his understanding there didn't seem to be any heat signatures on their way in. He was in his bunny suit, hood thrown back.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

As the ground element of the mission started their engines and moved North towards the derelict Imperial Oil Company (Ioco.) the maritime element embarked once again in the zodiac. Still clad in the protective suits the crew was happy to find calmer waters at the very end of the Burrard Inlet. The stability of the platform was paramount to obtain results in the fire support role. The haunting presence of the fishing boats obliged the burly Ukrainian to keep an extra eye for any possible threat. After all, using fishing boats for other purpose was not so uncommon in the Soviet Navy:

Under the coveralls Taras gave instructions to the pilot to sail towards the middle of the bay in a parallel route with the advance of the armored element.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

In the darkness the armed Zodiac motored out into the middle of the inlet. From there, they were able to provide relay to the downtown and UBC. Upon a somewhat closer visual inspection the two moored fishing boats seemed to be riding low in the water but were still secured to the wooden wharves. Driving rain and wind-driven waves lashed the zodiac, the moored fishing boats and the shore but it was a lot more sheltered here than in the open waters of the Straits and western Burrard Inlet.

On-shore, the 2 vehicle column traveled along Ioco Road, driving by night-vision alone in the blackness. The way seemed clear enough, and there were no heat signatures in the abandoned houses and buildings lining the shoreline road. The heavy vehicles simply rolled over wind-blown debris like leaves, branches, roof-tiles, twisted rain gutters, really anything that could be blown or ripped off a tree or structure, nailed down or not.

According to the fragmentary information they had from the now-dead scavenger, the warhead had landed in what used to be the south side of the refinery, relatively close to the waterfront.

0530:

The vehicles made it to the edge of the refinery complex safely to their dismount point. On the water, about 100m from shore, Taras could see both vehicles where they waited.

The tropical storm that had the city in its pre-dawn grip seemed to be letting up a little, although that could be wishful thinking after the last few days. Likely, they were looking for a crater in the soft earth. Slamming into the ground from orbit there was no chance the device was intact, but many components would still remain, including fragments of the Plutonium "pit", electronics, and so on.

"Roger Lima Six, Wilco.  Give me a Mike or two to position."

Kelsey has the BTR driver Maneuver them into a good firing position for that arc with as much hull cover as they can find, but leaving the turret free.  She has the rest of the crew try to peek as best as they can, as well, full circle of vehicle.  She will want her vehicle backed into the hull cover so they can drive straight out in emergency.  Escape path according to the plan.  She glances worriedly once or twice at the rad meter as they get settled in.
When they are positioned she radios "Lima 6, Alpha is in position."

Taking control of the Kodiak's turret weapons systems, Tremblay performed a 360 degree check with the thermal sights. He then concentrated uphill at the 11-12 o'clock position, where they believed the warhead was located. There was a lot of blackness due to the heavy precipitation, which was efficiently carrying away the heat from the structures and undergrowth. If someone was out there, they would show up without a problem due to the contrast.

"No targets spotted, sir!"

He was quite glad to be inside the armoured turret, protected from the environment, but if need be he could open the Commander's hatch and use the pintle-mounted MG. Tremblay would be going for the 25mm first, then the co-ax MG.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #36):

The BTR's Geiger counters registered no unusual levels of radiation, which was good and not completely unexpected at this distance from the suspected warhead. To find the location of the warhead's crater would require using a more sensitive hand-held meter, which was in the process of happening.

As this was a parking lot, there wasn't much in the way of terrain to hide the vehicle behind. One option was to go downslope a ways but the turret weapons couldn't depress enough to engage targets uphill. Instead, the driver drove up to get between the ruined guard houses. The BTR was high enough for the turret to clear the small building beside it and cover the uphill slope while remaining hull down. The BTR was pointed east, the direction they came in.

The driver, Tanase, poked his head out, using his NVGs to scan the road they had taken in, to the east. Petrovitch, the gunner, covered up-slope (north), peering into his sights. Putsep, the assistant commander, opened one of the rear roof hatches and watched to the west, reasoning that the area downslope to the south was in clear view of Taras' maritime element on the water and not in need of direct observation. Kelsey's commander's seat was positioned to look east (along the line of travel) but she could turn to observe any direction desired (as long as the turret didn't block her.

Like everyone who was outside, the NBC bunny suit made observation in the stormy darkness all that more difficult.

Also, the vehicle weapons (KPVT and PKMT) are loaded, per the threat level. The BTR is parking facing east between the guard houses, protected from fire from the north or south but not east-west.

Taras couldn't help but notice a big industrial site located right next to the refinery. Six massive blocks punctuated by large chimneys raising to the sky. This complex didn't appeared to be connected to the Imperial Oil Company yet it was so close. The electric park located right behind gave a hint that this could be an electric power plant of steam or gas turbines type. A protruding pier was located right in front.

Seems like we will need to get a little bit closer to the shore if we want to be of any help. If trouble start from the building we may need to disembark and act as a reserve force. The best that we can do is cover their left flank from here.

Upon Taras instructions the zodiac was reposiotioned closer to the shore at a slanted angle from the left towards the refinery/ Now they were near the thermo-electric power plant wharf:

Ok, folks. lets identify some targets here...Seems like there is a large building or storage in front of the main pier. Right behind there is a small one that looks like an office with a big parking lot. The rest is clear cut and up hill tank farm. Take reference for distance and zero the weapons in case we need to fire. If this is the case I will shoot the PKM and the tracers will tell you.

The crew was ready for action. Constable Bajorek was manning the zodiac, at that time standing still but ready to move. Private Sheeler dropped the FN rifle and started to swing the Mk-19 towards the selected targets. Private Droz and Constable Chau paired up nicely to serve the Carl Gustav as a shooter and reloader. They were conscious about the powerful backblast of the weapon before deploying it. Finally Taras appointed Troy, his comms man, as assistant gunner as well. He would be laying next to him ensuring a correct feed of the belted machine gun. The ukrainian had disposed of the metal box to avoid excessive rattling and prepared a belt with a total count of 100 rounds one in every 5 rounds was a green typed T-46 tracer. Typical of Soviet machine guns, the PKM was feeding from the right and ejecting its spent cases via an ejection port on the left side, contrary to the right side ejection port seen in most Western machine guns.

Bajorek! If we get shot at get the zodiac behind the wharf of the power plant. The rest please be generous and throw some smoke. Once we get there we can set a defensive position. There is a road that goes with the refinery and we can link up with the ground element.

Once the team was ready Taras radioed the leader:

Lima-6, Lima-6...this is Bravo-2. We are in position and ready to provide support. Please confirm that you see me. Over.

The slow revving power-pack of the RIB offered a single source of heat enough to be discriminated over the water. Being localized meant that the commander could have a better tactical picture and know where the fire support would be coming. Also it facilitated relocation orders or even the choice for a disembarkment site.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

Indeed, the building complex to the west of the refinery seemed to be a power station of some kind, due to the chimney stacks and the power lines leading into it and then up the hillside. Using the spotlight on the zodiac just possible to read a rusted sign that said "Burrard Thermal Power Station - Please Keep Out" on the wharf.

Anyone approaching from the west would have a difficult time. It was thick forest there with a few older burned patches, and a road that snaked down the steep hillside back and forth along the hydro cut to the power station. Pretty much all of the important directions were covered (east, west, north) and the one that wasn't, south, would be a little hard to sneak up using.

Andy and Mac completed the deployment. Now it was time for Bezhov to dismount and do his thing.

Bezhov slung his auto-carbine and switched on his Geiger counter. He calibrated it and checked it out. He called out to Major von Stahl, voice muffled by his NBC mask, "Major, the equipment is working! I shall commence my survey! Although really I'm just going to look for the big crater."

He carefully waved the wand around, seeking the level of radiation. Meter clicking quietly, Bezhov adjusted his night-vision goggles and started trudging west, across the hillside under the pipelines and towards the dark administration building.

"I'm not close enough yet to pick anything up. There's little radiological contamination here. I'll go sideways across the hill, to find some contaminated runoff from higher up, then start up from there."

Geiger counters were not exactly like radio direction finders; they simply got more active the closer you were to the source of contamination. Two detectors working in tandem could more accurately map the boundaries of a source of contamination or even locate a source in a grid search, but they didn't have access to such sensitive gear.

Major von Stahl gave his assent over the radio to Kelsey's report. As well, he looked out and saw the Zodiac and further confirmed he had Taras in view to his southwest.

Overhead it should have been getting lighter as they approached dawn but the rain and clouds was still too thick to permit any light.

Halfway across the hillside, Bezhov stopped about 100m or so away. He waved the Geiger counter's probe around, bent over to examine something low to the ground more closely, then straightened up and waved for attention.

He wasn't too clear with NATO radio procedure so he just transmitted in plain English. "I've got something! Runoff in a culvert that is contaminated. I'm going to follow it up the hillside, see where it's draining from."

Bezhov started walking up the hillside, checking the culvert and the sides.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

The crew of the Little Potemkin received the news over the radio with enthusiasm. Being the supporting element and pretty much stranded over the water away from the ground team in protective posture was not a very pleasant situation.

Lima 6...Lima 6...This is Bravo 2. We can provide illumination for Lima 2 if needed. Over.

Groping in the darkness while looking for a warhead with a yield of 550-750 KT wasn't a walk in a park. Taras realized that providing overhead illumination of the area being searched could greatly speed up the process. He wasn't too worry about losing discretion. The roaring presence of the armored vehicles echoing across the end of the Burrard inlet would probably announced their presence a while ago.

Unknown the technical details for the ukrainian the FFV545 rounds carried in the zodiac were illuminating starshells, that could be fired up to 2,300 m maximum range, but with an effective envelope of 300 to 2,100 m. Suspended by parachute, they will burn for 30 seconds while producing 650,000 candela, providing a 400 to 500 m diameter area of illumination.

Taras was more familiar with the use of illumination rounds from mortars as standard practice of the Red Army but he was confident that this measure would help his friend Bezhov but was obviously consulting the misssion commander on this issue.

Bezhov's voice came in a little clearer, with less echo.

"Yes! I am fine, here, I have a hand light, it is better than the goggles. I have taken off my mask, to see better.

"I confirm there is no contamination in the air, just the ground water. It does stink of petroleum! Phew! But I'll keep the illumination in mind."

It was obvious he had taken off his mask in order to be able to see better. They could also see that he wasn't using the night goggles but a powerful hand-light.

A brilliant white beam lanced out, sweeping the area around Bezhov. He was slowly moving north, towards some bushes and storage tanks that would block him from view.

Not fun at all on the water. The heavy stormy seas prevented the landlubber crew from maintaining a decent stable platform from where to orientate their arcs of fire and fields of view. The lack of action and the cumbersome protective suits were also adding to the overall uncomfortable situation. Grand Admiral Shevchenko "The Great" at the helm of his "Little Potemkin" noticed how the morale of the sailors was slowly sinking and he tried to correct the bearings:

Lima 6...Lima 6...This is Bravo 2. We are having problems here to get steady on the water. I'm going to dock by the powerplant. I repeat, I'm going to dock by the power plant. Confirm reception. Over.

Steering the RIB towards the little platform brought some relief to the team. At least Taras was willing to be able to keep busy preparing a firebase on solid ground.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

0546 Hours

While Bezhov waited, the dismounts (Mac, Master McRae, Fox, Delaney, Major von Stahl) loaded back into the LAV. With a roar of the diesel engine the Kodiak trundled up the muddy slope along a path beside the pipeline leading down to the Inlet.

Quickly, Kelsey had Tanase reverse the BTR into a position where it was hull-down to fire coming from the east. The bow was therefore pointing west but the turret reversed to fire over the rear deck, covering the route in from the east. Petrovitch, the gunner, reported that he had a mostly clear 360 degree arc of fire, although the nearby guard buildings did present a few blind spots.

Out on the water, the Zodiac docked on the pier that jutted into Burrard Inlet from the power station. The crew were vocally relieved to not be out on the bucking seas. Troy secured the large Zodiac with a couple lines and the rest of the crew collapsed on the platform that was otherwise crammed with machinery of some kind. It was clear this was no flimsy dock but some kind of permanent refueling station or gas terminal for the power plant.

http://tinyurl.com/44c2cr4

Some 45 long minutes after "official" dawn it was starting to get noticeably lighter, as the sun came up above the rain heavy clouds and from behind the mountains. Within about five or ten minutes it was practically light enough not to need NVGs or other light-intensifying gear. Also, the rain was slacking off to heavy showers and the wind died down somewhat. It wasn't a clear or perfect day by any means, but the worst of the storm seemed to have blown itself out.

In reply to Seth Joseph Delaney (msg #67):

Taking advantage of the 8-wheel drive, Rachel gunned the powerful engine and powered uphill. She didn't want to get bogged down, but the hillside would be more dangerous if they stopped and started to slide backwards.

"I hope everyone is holding on back there!"

With a free hand she popped the driver's hatch so she didn't have to keep using the driver's periscope. She then raised the folding windscreen and set the wiper going. Her visibility was much improved as a result. Some water leaked down inside the LAV but nothing serious.

Given the clear to remove her mask Kelsey does that and removes her gloves as well.  She tries to pay extra attention to the blind spots the buildings are causing, just in case.  She relays the unmask to her crew.  "Nice, from a flood to a mere downpour.  Is that sunshine coming?"

The maritime detachment members removed their masks as soon as the order came on the radio. The platform was slippery and wet but it offered some level of protection against the receding rain storm. Daylight was quickly approaching and the silhouettes of the vehicles appeared now visible in the barren hill of the tank farm. More noticeable was the LAV as it moved forwards in its climb. The fatigue of the crew was reflecting. Some isolated chuckle or throat clearing substituted conversation.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

The Lavin' Spoonful moved along an overgrown track up the hillside. The dismounts (Mac, Andy, Fox, Delaney commanded by von Stahl) went down the ramp and set a defensive perimeter. The LAV was pointed west, just to the right of a series of shoulder-high pipeline that made it hull down from fire to the west.

The Major set up the dismounts so that Fox and Delaney were covering North (uphill), Andy and Mac South down the downhill slope, and he himself would cover east while Tremblay and Lee in the LAV would cover Bezhov to the west. Lee raised the ramp and kept her head out the hatch, Tremblay kept looking through the thermal sight.

This process took another ten minutes. The weather got better as the storm started to rapidly break up. There still wasn't any direct sunlight but it was probably the sun would soon break through the clouds, if conditions continued to improve.

Further west, Bezhov started moving up the hill, looking for the impact area of the warhead. Kelsey in the BTR kept watch on the road in from the east, while Taras and company recovered on the narrow jetty by the power plant to the west.

Seeing the LAV get into position, Bezhov checked in on the radio and continued on north. He was following the trail of contaminated runoff.

At a certain point he bypassed some storage tanks and a copse of woods, then doubled back a little. He put his hood back on, made sure his suit was sealed.

"I've found it. It's on the north edge of this bunch of trees. A crater, four-five metres across. Just inside the woods."

"Someone's been here! There is a small wheeled digging machine. With shovel. They have uncovered warhead. There are rubber, ah gloves, plastic sheeting, discarded radiological protection suits. No footprints because of rain. I'm going to take photographs, documenting scene. Recording radiation levels.

"It's safe about 20m out, more contamination closer in. Am putting on dosimeter."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

0600

They were a little behind schedule, by about 15 minutes. Bezhov was about done. The rain had really slackened and the wind was still dying, but it could pick up again.

Everyone who takes off their mask in the refinery area notes a strong scent of petrochemicals. Even Taras notes a whiff when the wind shifts his way. Obviously, the storage tanks are slowly leaking fuel. It doesn't seem to be a hazard; there are no standing pools of oil or a rainbow sheen on the abundant groundwater. Mostly it's a reminder of how much fuel has sat here, going to waste. Most was probably unusable by now but still remained in bulk.

Over the radio, Bezhov read off his readings in Sieverts and started heading back to the LAV. The Major acknowledged Bezhov's transmission, moving the LAV and the dismounts up the hill a little further to maintain direct line of sight. He had the two pairs spread out a little so a catastrophic strike on the Kodiak couldn't take them out.

Mac and Andy couldn't see anything in their arc (south down the hill). Kelsey was getting along well with her crew. The driver and gunner didn't speak a lot of English but knew a little. She had to keep her instructions simple for them. The vehicle commander, Pütsep, knew a little more English and translated where necessary.

It was quiet at the BTR. Kelsey kept a 360 degree watch, but her attention was riveted to the east. It was faint, but she was sure she heard vehicles approaching, several, to the east. This would likely be a convoy of some sort approaching along the road they came in on. They were about 300m or so, and she thought she detected a plume of greyish smoke, possibly from one or more diesel engines.

"This is Alpha One, be advised all elements, I have several vehicles on the road east of our position.  I have one heavy, diesel engine, all about 300 meters out.  I have no visual except smoke, I have audio."   She instructs her crew on what she see as well, and has them keep their eyes peeled in other directions in case of a ground/foot element.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #75):

The BTR's driver, already pointed in the opposite direction (west), poked his head out his hatch, to better keep watch in that direction. The assistant commander peered out the side periscopes in the rear passenger area, but reported to Kelsey he couldn't see much from inside, and could he dismount? The gunner trained the turret-mounted 14.5mm KPV-T and coaxial 7.62mm PKT on where Ioco road debouched from the forest into the parking lot, about 190m away.

In the commander's seat to the right of the turret, Kelsey realised that as the gun was trained to the rear, she could not direct the turret if she was buttoned up as her periscopes were directed to the sides and front. (Although she was okay where she was and although her head was out the hatch, not that exposed due to the vehicle already being hull-down.) Without a hatch of his own, the gunner would have to rely on her to direct him aside from his forward-facing gunsight and periscope.

From where they were on the jetty below and to the west, the marine element under Taras was not in a good location to observe eastwards. This included the parking lot or Ioco Road where it came out of the forest because of the acute angle and relative distance. If they were to put out on the now-calmer water they would have a better view of the visible parts of Ioco road and at least the side of the parking lot closest to the water.

Up on the hillside, the parking lot and Ioco Road were completely obscured by heavy forest. The LAV and dismounts could see Kelsey and the BTR below them, but could not see what they were seeing.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

The BTR's assistant commander confirmed Kelsey's instructions, translating them into Russian for the benefit of the rest of the crew.

Up on the hillside, Mac and Andy could cover at least the BTR. It was in their arc of coverage (south), even if they couldn't see much of the parking lot due to the thick woods to their left.

The marine element quickly embarked on the Zodiac, a task made much easier by the calmer water. They roared out into Burrard Inlet, keeping about 200m offshore. From that distance they could just see the edge of the woods where the unknown element that was approaching them would emerge out into the open.

After a few minutes, emerge they did, traveling slowly. It was an enclosed Humvee in woodland pattern with US Army markings, mounting a TOW ATGM (no thermal sight). The gunner was dressed in soaked US Army poncho, BDUs and a bandanna.

From the plumes of black smoke shooting into the air, it looked like there were a couple large vehicles following the Humvee, as yet unseen. They would arrive very shortly.

Somehow, someone in the Humvee (probably the gunner) immediately saw the BTR parked hull-down behind the guard shack. The Humvee slewed to a stop in the muddy lot around 170m away (near the East end of the parking lot). Taras judged the Humvee was about 400m away and at least partially hull-down to incoming fire from the water because of the lip of the parking lot. From this distance, Taras couldn't tell if they saw the zodiac yet or not in return. (They obviously had more immediate concerns!)

Kelsey keys the mic and routes through the PA system in her BTR.

"This is Warrant Kelsey Champlain with the Canadian Armed Forces, on a joint operation with the Canadian Mounted Police.  Please identify and parlay, United States forces."

She had to admit to herself that the TOW made her damn nervous, and tried to tell herself that the big things behind the hardshell HMMWV were likely cargo trucks and not tanks, she tried to perk her ears for the distinctive sound of the turbo whine to the standard US cargo truck (The M35A2 2.5 Ton Cargo Truck, or 'Deuce and a Half").  She knew the 'armor' on the HMMWV wasn't even up to properly protecting it's crew from her coax, let alone her main gun, which would make swiss cheese of that little jeep.

"Commander, casually target that truck, I'll try to ID the rest"

She toggles transmit to her radio.

"This is Alpha one.  I have identified the lead vehicle as a US Army Humm-Vee, that's Hotel Victor.  I see US, Uniform Sierra, Uniforms.  Other, larger vehicles as yet not Identified.  I have broadcast ID and Parlay."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

The silhouette  was now too familiar for Taras. After the bloody episode in Chinatown the profile of the utility vehicle in US Army markings was easy to recognise. Only the elongated tube of the TOW instead of the machine gun brought a difference to notice. And what a difference at that! Nobody liked to see the threat of such a powerful weapon aimed against the armor element of the Government forces.

Move closer to the shore!

The swerving zodiac will surely send a plume of spraying foam in the air and the sound of the engines getting closer would probably call the attention of the new arrivals as Taras was looking to buy some time for the ground element.

At the LAV, Lee dropped the ramp. Fox and Delaney got prepared to mount up if ordered to do so by the Major. Pvt. Arif Mahanadi (remember him?), the team's signals technician, scanned the radio waves for some kind of useful intelligence or information.

In the BTR, Tanase cranked up the engine. The dieseld immediately sputtered to life, shooting out clear exhaust instead of black petroleum fumes. It might make hearing a little more difficult, but it gave the vehicle tactical mobility. Petrovitch centred the reticule on the chest of the TOW gunner. The TOW was a deadly weapon at this range but it was not faster than a speeding 14.5mm bullet.

Pütsep, the Estonian assistant commander, opened a roof hatch into the passenger compartment. He showed Kelsey he had a smoke grenade ready to cover their retreat if needed. The updated BTR-70 turret was similar to the one mounted on the BTR-80 but lacked the smoke grenade launchers. A strong wind was still blowing, but it was from west to east so any cloud would go from the BTR and carried directly towards the Humvee.

Nothing happened for moment (a minute or so) as the Humvee's occupants seemed to be having an animated conversation amongst themselves punctuated by glaces in the BTR's direction. She could also see one of them talking into a radio handset. (The vehicle did have a radio aerial tied forward down onto the hood.) Meanwhile, most of the truck noises (and smoke plumes) behind the Humvee down the road halted. She thought one might belong to a deuce (which was common enough in the Canadian Forces) but the others to larger vehicles. Thankfully she didn't hear the squeaking and squalling of tank or APC treads.

Arif called over the radio, "Bravo, correction Alpha One. this is Lima One, over."

"I have picked up back-and-forth comms chatter. The bearings says it's probably your boy and one or two others close by, from the signal strengths. It's encrypted, I can't tell what they're saying. Do you copy? Over."

Then, two of the men inside (one dressed in Canadian Fatigues, one in US BDUs) got out the right (driver's) side of the vehicle (as it was facing her). Both were bundled up enough in the inclement weather to make further identification impossible. The "Canadian" handed the "American" a C9 SAW (M249 with Elcan scope) and pointed towards the water and the zodiac. The SAW gunner nodded and started running across the parking lot towards the water side where he could presumably get a better view of (and bead on) the zodiac in the water below.

The other man (armed only with a sidearm) took out a white cloth and started waving it. the stiff breeze snatched at it and he almost dropped it. Then he began to walk slowly and carefully towards the BTR, avoiding the worst of the massive puddles and potholes riddling the dirt lot. Kel noted he was wearing a distinctive "airborne" camouflage smock (issued only to commandos of the Canadian Airborne Regiment) over his CF combats, like McRae and Fox. Kel was unable to further decipher the markings on the Humvee at this angle so she could not tell the parent unit (battalion or division).

Out on the water, the zodiac turned towards shore, sending up a nice rooster-tail. They got to about 100m out from the rocks, 300m from the Humvee. Any closer and the hill would cut them off from viewing the vehicle. As it was, the hillside and lip of the parking lot partially obscured the target. Taras could see the SAW gunner running across the lot towards them.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

She watches the action carefully, then radios.  "Roger, Lima six.  Wilco.  I copy Lima One,good work, out." Seeing the men exit she watches a moment, then radios again.  "Lima Six, this is Alpha One, I have one Canadian Commando with a white flag, and one Sierra Alpha Whiskey advancing on our Bravo element.  Our Hummer has a Tango Oscar Whiskey, I hear at least one deuce and a half truck, no track squeeks.  I think we have a wheel convoy.  Parlay forward is a Charlie Alpha Foxtrot Commando. I propose myself on Parlay, since I got the best English." Humor comes across on the last bit.
She flips over to PA and broadcasts "Unknown element, standby on parlay, and stop advance of you machine gunner on my seaborne elements alpha sierra alpha papa."

She gives Putsep a nod and smile at his quick thinking  "Get me a portable radio, and my glengary out of the side pouch on my pack"

She awaits orders from Vic.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

From his position out on the water, the maritime element had a different and useful perspective on the new elements parked out of Kelsey's sight along Ioco Rd.

Through the trees, back towards the intersection of Ioco Rd. and 4th Ave, were parked what looked to be at least 2 large vehicles, trucks. Although the trees made it difficult to make any exact ID, the looked to be at least one 5-ton and a flatbed 10-ton, both with canvas covers on the back.

Inside the BTR, Pütsep handed a hand radio up to Kelsey and, after some confusion, her glengarry hat. "Here you are! Funny hat!" he said. Seeming to ignore her, the SAW gunner disappeared into a clump of trees bordering the edge of the parking lot, presumably to get a bead on the Zodiac from cover.

Meanwhile, the man approaching her pulled down his bandanna and goggles, and pulled back his hood. She recognised him as her old OC: Lt. Benjamin John Jagelis. He stopped, trying to get a better look at her. Jagelis called out,

"Hey, who are you with? Do you have permission to be here? I'm represent the Canadian Forces and you'd better point that gun somewhere else!"

http://tinyurl.com/3r5uawe

(Recap on this character: Lieut. Jagelis was in the Canadian Airborne Regiment like Fox and McRae, although not personally known to them as he joined the Airborne when it expanded during the war, not before like them. Jagelis had also been the original commander of Team URIEL when it was first sent to Vancouver by the DRI. He was not especially liked even though he was a competent commando, and had moved on after leading a disastrous patrol into Stanley Park, not finding the team's somewhat passive role to his liking or temperament. He then led a CF team against Soviet remnants in different areas of BC, and last heard from was back in town and possibly captured a technical that bandits were using to menace Kingsway. He wanted to meet up with the team but didn't have a chance.)

A short bark of a laugh as she DOES ID him.  She radios.  "Ya, ID is Positive, he's ours, ELTEE Jagelis, our old Cee Oh.  I am moving forward to Parlay."

She slips on her Glengarry and pulls herself out of her hatch, moving forward with a wave.  She does a last broadcast on her PA forward, and brings her rifle, slung not readied, with her.  "Lieutenant Jagelis, did you forget me already?  It's Kelsey Champlain, from UBC Vancouver? " She almost mentions the op in Stanley Park, but she holds that back with a little effort.

She waves and moves to get down and go meet up with him, Jacking her headset into a portable PRC. When around the building with her hands in clear view, rifle slung over her shoulder.  "Funny to meet you round here.  I heard you were still operating in this area.  Might wanna call off your man on the SAW before your old team mates in the Zodiac get the wrong idea, kay?"  She tries her best disarming grin.  She never much really disliked the man, just didn't like how he nearly got her killed.  Much more impressed with her current CO did not mean she wanted her old one dead.  "Fuckin nice weather we got here.  For ducks."  And a reuse of a joke on a new audience and waiting for the Lt to notice she is in NBC gear.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

Taras was about to indicate Troy to report the intel regarding the trucks when the name of "Jagelis"  was brought over to the crew as it was retransmitted over the loudspeaker.

At that point the whole arsenal of the "Little Potemkin" was trained on the lonely figure threatening the zodiac with the squad automatic weapon. There wasn't a real option other than the Western style stand-off. The strong wind prevented the creation of an effective smoke screen and moving around would challenge the aim of the crewed weapons giving the advantage to the Tango. Finally, sailing fast South would left the ground team without the possibility of support.

Relieved that the situation was quickly defusing, the ukrainian Sargent ordered forward to the beach.

Jagelis! Almost fucking things around again! Ha! I wonder what the heck is he doing here and why HQ wouldn't let us know of his presence in our Area of Operations...Lets meet the cowboy, folks!

The bitter memories of the deadly mission in Stanley Park still fresh in Taras mind but the mission was priority number one and before getting to close to the shore he radioed the Team leader Commander von Stahl:

Andy kept a careful watch, Jagelis' presence was a sign that things were probably OK, but if there was a chance of two units meeting at just this position, there was always a chance that there might be another arrival.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

In the BTR, Pütsep took over the commander's position, flashing Kelsey a thumb's-up as he popped up in the hatch. He mostly kept an eye on the northern flank, as the trees were a natural route to get close to the BTR unseen.

The sound of a deuce truck engine approached from somewhere down the road past the Humvee, but stopped just out of sight of Kelsey.

Down on the water, Taras had the zodiac steer into shore. They swiftly disembarked on the shore. The water seemed a little oily, with a sheen, and the area had a faint smell of petrochemicals.

Up the hill, the dismounts (Mac, Andy, Delaney and Fox) kept scanning the area, looking for threats. Looking through the x10 spotting scope, Mac saw movement in the woods just north of the BTR. "I see at least 2 Tangos in the woods, 183 metres range downhill at our 11 o'clock. One RPG-7 and possibly a sniper, flanking Kelsey in the BTR."

Pütsep also spotted the movement, off to the left (facing back) of the BTR. He grabbed his rifle and transmitted over the team net, "Man with RPG, on left flank!"

"Alpha One. Very well, they are not supposed to be here at all. I will check with UBC to verify their presence is legitimate. Keep your guard up. Out."

His Teutonic sense of order seemed offended by the unknown element and it bothered him. Shaking his head and muttering, von Stahl walked over to the rear of the LAV and picked up the intercom handset and spoke to Arif, the team's signaller.

"Private, get me on the long-range net to UBC. See if they have authorised any other units in our area. Specifically Lieutenant Jagelis, the former team commander."

He focused on getting a good shot on one of the Tangos and then waited for confirmation on whether the troops were friendlies or not.

Kelsey stops where she is with cover left and right, unslings her rifle and drops it to a loose ready, looks towards where the RPG would be and shakes her head slightly, and gives a slight smile to the vehicle commander before looking back to Jagelis.

A slight smile on the congratulations and a nod to him in reply.

"Jagelis, you'll be dealing with me, no offense.  I'm not giving you any further intel until you stop deploying your troops against us.  Now I have a SAW, an RPG, and a sniper.  You are headed fast to an incident if you keep deploying on friendlies, lieutenant."  She gives a firm tone and meets his eyes, not looking very friendly herself.  "No one told us about you being here, so you understand why we might not be welcoming?  I need you to stand down, right now, Jagelis, without delay.  This is our op, and we don't like it going Charlie Foxtrot."

She keys her mic to broadcast "This is Alpha One, all elements, hold your fire, these should be friendlies, but watch em until verified."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

You just don't show up from nowhere and take the candy from the kids... The thoughts were shared for most of the members of the team. Taras was thankful that the German Offizier already raised the flag. Now there was the dilemma of what to do next with the Bravo element. A hasty defense arrangement was the first idea that sprung in the Ukrainian fighter's mind. Instead of using the radio, Shevchenko motioned with his arms signalling the Major that his crew would be moving towards the building nearby.

Team! Get under cover and weapons ready at the South Shack! Droz and Chau get the bazooka trained on the humvee. The rest keep watch on the tangos uphill!

Taras was using both corners of the building as a cover and projecting two angles of fire. One of them was the "bazooka" of Carl Gustav aiming towards the TOW anti-tank system and Taras with the PKM in case the dismounts started deploying from the trucks aggresively. The rest of the crew (Sheeler, Bajorek and Troy) using his persanal weapons were covering the approach of the identified tangos.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 1

Andy kept his aim on the RPG gunner, it left him exposed to danger from the potential sniper but the RPG represented the greatest threat to the unit so it was his duty to eliminate him should he turn out to be a threat.

He held his fire but kept his gun trained on his target.
