Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Ioco Refinery
066 Hours Sunday 21 April 2001

http://maps.google.com/?ll=49....552&t=h&z=18

Up on the hillside, Major von Stahl saw Taras' gesture and gave him a wave in return to indicate understanding. Anything else would have been wasted effort. Taras' target was about 100m from him, and uphill.

In the space of time that Kelsey confronted the arrogant Lieutenant, Taras and company disembarked from the zodiac. The group quickly made it to the chain link fence lining the waterfront. Taras, Sheeler and Chau helped Bajorek, DeFazio and Droz over the drooping rusted barrier, then climbed over themselves. The whole process tool only about 10 seconds to accomplish. Then they were crossing the rail sidings 30m or so away, taking momentary cover behind two steel-sided bulk transport rail cars abandoned there.

The SAW gunner was now unseen to them (and to Kelsey) although his approximate position in the bushes at the edge of the parking lot under the tree was known. Unfortunately, the rest of Jagelis' unit was out of their line of sight, as they were in the "dead space" at the foot of the hill they were on.

Andy was sighted-in on the RPG gunner now and was taking up the slack on the trigger. He could send him to Hell with the merest effort. It was clear the gunner was sighted-in on the BTR's flank. It was a Mexican standoff of sorts; if the gunner chose to launch his rocket Andy could shoot but would come down to who's reflexes were faster.

Von Stahl humg up the intercom with a curse. "Shit! We can't get UBC out here, too much in the way and we don't have a repeater any more. I would love to double-check this Benjamin John Jagelis a little better."

He looked downhill using his binoculars, focusing on Taras' maneuver. He raised his arm to indicate he understood Taras' own hand signal on his planned movement.

Seeing Kelsey switch to low-ready, Jagelis scowled.

"Now, Corporal, that's not very friendly. But I see your point! Fine." He stepped a little closer to the south guard building, then turned around to the Humvee and waved at them.

"Jerry, stand down on the TOW! Mike, bring the rest of the vehicles in. We got work to do here."

The man turned the TOW aside and climbed down on the far side of the Humvee. Engines started up along the road, out of sight.

Jagelis turned back to Kelsey and said a little sarcastically, "there, are you quite satisfied now, Corporal? Just take it easy, girl, we don't want you to panic now. People could get hurt."

In reply to Nicolaus von Stahl (msg #2):

A little ways off from the Major, Delaney got a confused look on his face.

"Sir... did you say Benjamin John Jagelis? I thought when you guys were talking about some Jagelis it was about another guy. It can't be the "real" Ben Jagelis, because I'm sure that Lieutenant Jagelis is dead!"

"I know I'm not making much sense, let me explain. He was my OC in the Pats during the war in Europe, a real prick. When I was shipped back home he stayed and I heard he joined the Airborne Regiment. A mutual friend said he was killed about a year ago, up in the Baltic. This guy served with him too and he couldn't be mistaken."

"Bottom line, this joker down there must be an imposter using the same name because the real Jagelis is fucking dead, I'll swear to it."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The early morning shot came to confirm everybody's suspicion that something was wrong. About to make the next bound towards the Eastern corner of the building. Before jumping over the rail cars the team tried to find the elusive machine gunner lurking nearby. Taras prepared three HC smoke grenades in order to cover the advance in the open. With minimal planning it was the easiest way to conceal the maneuver for a small area and short period of time. Taras noted that the direction of the wind was almost perfect coming flanking from the West. Too fast for a dense concentration but the relative humidity of the air would help to blow the right amount in the face of the threat.

Three times is charm...

The thought came as the ex Soviet Army Combat Engineer started popping the cartridges at different intervals.

Droz! Chau! Get ready to move on my command! The rest will cover by fire!

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

"Shit", Andy thought to himself as the chaos raged around him. It had reached the point where he needed to fish or cut bait and despite Jagelis' order to stand down, his target was still totally focused on the BTR. He hated this sort of decision but the sum was simple, if he fired and got it wrong, a stranger died, possibly a comrade, but one who was encouraging a blue on blue if he was, if he didn't fire and got it wrong, the people he did know and care for in the BTR would die.

"No contest," the experienced sniper ran the odds in milliseconds and he gently rolled the trigger of his rifle and sent a round toward the unfortunate RPG gunner. The shot was aimed to kill, if you were firing there was no point fannying about trying to injure the man or damage his weapon. If his aim was true the man was already in a world of hurt.

As he fired and operated the bolt, Andy hissed to Mac, "Find me that fucking sniper."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

A shot cut short von Stahl's warning transmission.

Looking through his scope, Andy could see his own bullet take the RPG gunner below his steel helmet and behind the ear as he fired his rocket. His trigger finger jerked convulsively and the rocket hit the ground in front of him and, not having time to arm, spun up into the air before exploding several hundred metres away.

Receiving no reply to her transmission and hearing all hell breaking loose on the hillside above her, Kelsey swung her weapon to cover Jagelis. She saw him wordlessly duck left (from her perspective) out of sight around the north corner of the building she was standing against. At the same time, someone at the Humvee 150m away to the east opened up on her with an M16A2 over the bonnet, firing several 3-round bursts in her direction. Most missed or chewed into the plywood and armour glass front of the cinder-block guard hut. Several went "zing" around and over her. One round hit her in the left side torso, slamming into her flak vest. Kel's wind was knocked out of her and she staggered to the side, stunned.

Down at the train tracks, Taras stood where he was almost fully covered by the rail car and threw out the first smoke canister to create a smoke screen. It landed where he intended.

Automatic gunfire out of sight echoed out through the wooded hills as someone began firing in the parking lot. The unseen SAW gunner above them opened up, firing a long ripping burst at the train cars below him. Taras estimated at least 40-60 rounds were expended in his direction and at least a few came close to ricochet away harmlessly. His element was protected from the suppressive automatic fire by the rusted steel of the rolling stock (a tactical situation reminiscent of many firefights to control rail yards during the Great Patriotic War with the Hitlerites) although he could hear panicked exclamations from at least one or two of his people behind him. They seemed well-enough trained but none were battle-hardened like he was and this was probably the first time they had come under effective fire.

He noted with satisfaction that the first smoke grenade was deploying in a satisfactory manner, carried by the wind eastwards towards the machinegunner that antagonised them and had them effectively pinned down.

Seeing the AT rocket shoot wildly up in the air and Kelsey going down, Pütsep, the BTR's temporary commander ordered Petrovitch to open fire and popped his smoke grenade to provide some cover. "Mikhail Semenovitch, shoot the vehicle then targets at 1 o'clock!" He threw the smoking canister onto the rear deck of the BTR.

Opening fire at the target, Petrovitch (aka "Mikhail Semenovitch" raked the stream of 14.5mm KPV rounds across the Humvee. The shooter at the hood was hit and went down while the driver slumped over. Several rounds hit the Humvee but there were no secondary explosions.

The deuce and a half pulled out from behind the Humvee. It was hit as well, but it was hard to see how or if it was affected.

Satisfied with the results of the smoke grenade, Taras deployed a second one just a few yards away from the first to generate a screening effect. The shots around went wild and the cover of the railroad boxcars was reassuring but it seems that it proved a bit much for those not familiar with the original soundtrack of World War III.

SHHH!!! Let him spend the bullets!

Typical counter measures for smoke deployment usually involves indiscriminate fire against it or responding with smoke of your own. In this case the wind was playing in Taras hands. The large tree and surrounding bushes appeared to be the most likely source of trouble. The ukrainian would keep an eye for any movement.

Meanwhile the rest of the team was expecting further orders from Shevchenko under the staccato of automatic weapons echoing in the surrounding hills.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The wind seemed to be dying down but there was the occasional sprinkle of rain to contrast with the early morning sunshine. The dying wind helped Taras' smokescreen spread and he was able to deploy the second smoke grenade but it didn't quite go where he wanted. Still, things seemed to be developing nicely. He held the last of the prepared smoke grenades in his hand, ready to pull the pin and deploy.

lacking any obvious targets other than the rail cars where Taras' team was taking shelter, the SAW gunner above them continued to spray suppressive fire in that direction. He cut down to a couple short controlled 5-round bursts to remind them he was there and would cut them down if they broke cover. The personnel accompanying Taras held firm, not panicking but waiting for the SAW to run low on ammunition or the smoke screen to spread and thicken. Hopefully both. Bullets whanged off the metal and spanged into the gravel of the train yard around Taras' elements' cover.

Ducking down beside a train wheel, Sheeler risked taking a look for the SAW gunner. He was unable to spot the shooter, despite his risky bravery. The SAW gunner spotted him, though, and loosed a burst in his direction. The rounds came close but bounced off the rusty steel that Sheeler was taking cover behind.

The BTR's turret kept tracking left from the Humvee, engaging the group around where the RPG was spotted. The 14.5mm rounds ripped up the bushes and trees, showing the ground with murdered greenery. There was no sign of life from the Humvee, the driver and gunner dead where they sat or lay. This was a good thing for Kelsey, temporarily stunned by the bullet that was luckily absorbed by her flak vest.

The red smoke from the canister that Pütsep deployed at the rear of the BTR drifted east on the wind, obscuring the end of the parking lot where the Humvee sat. From that direction came the roar of an engine, like another truck or vehicle was pulling up.

Rachel didn't back up the LAV but instead dropped the ramp. Delaney and Mac dragged von Stahl up inside where the team's medic could work on him in safety. Bezhov kept moving to the waiting LAV. Fox couldn't see any targets but kept scanning anyways. Tremblay looked through the thermal sights, trying to decide if the heat spots represented active threats. With Andy remaining in his line of fire he hesitated to engage the area where the RPG was located, but the BTR was doing the job and shooting them up itself!

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The sudden change in the wind came to upset somehow the pattern expected but the final result was still effective. Taras deployed the third and last smoke grenade. While doing so, he noticed Sheeler's attempt. He wasn't happy with the outcome of having accurate fire delivered upon the team.

Sheeler! Move over here and keep down! Is the shooter by the tree?

The short bursts were a prompt indication that ammo and fire discipline was one of the best assets in combat. What next? The ukrainian was contemplating several options but for now, getting rid of the machine gun threat was number one.

He pulled the pin on the satchel charge, measuring carefully where he would place or deploy it to destroy the BTR. The normal procedure would be to throw it under the APC but it would be easier to deploy it on top deck and more likely to destroy the turret.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn 3

The BTR's gun swung back to cover the Humvee and the parking lot. That target was fast becoming shrouded in smoke from Pütsep's grenade as the cloud was carried east by the wind. Realising the Kelsey might well be injured, Pütsep ducked down into the hull and dismounted through the left side passenger door. "Are you okay?!" he asked her as he popped his head out the hatch and spotted her.

A heavy truck of some kind, likely a Deuce, pulled into the lot, but it was obscured by the smoke screen that Pütsep had deployed to cover the BTR.

As Bezhov neared the LAV, a lifeless von Stahl was dragged up the ramp and into the back where Mac and Delandy could work on his injuries. Scanning the BTR's area from the Kodiak's vehicle commander position, Trembay was unable to clearly determine who the threats were or where they might be coming from. Instead, he settled into overwatch.

Taras deployed his third smoke canister. This one went a little wide, too, but the whole open area east and north of their position was becoming quickly shrouded in a white cloud. The SAW gunner fired a couple more bursts, but this was basically blind fire through the smoke. One round of ten hit the massive rail cars, the rest going wild. Sheeler moved over, careful to keep under cover. "Sorry, I couldn't quite see him but I think yeah, he's under that big tree. Can't miss it."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Perfect sense... Taras thoughts were getting clear. The shooter was responding as expected and the words from Private Sheeler were reassuring.

Rocket team! Get ready to fire on the tree! Shoot at branches, make airburst!

It wasn't difficult to convey the idea. The ukrainian roughly calculated the Carl Gustav round to be on pair with the 82 mm mortar round and so it would be the killing radius effect. The sensible fuze will easily detonate upon impact adding a deadly shower of shrapnel and wood shards from above. This technique was previously used in combat and Taras was willing to take advantage. The thickening smoke column would help to cover the fireteam while the soaring target wouldn't represent any problem to hit.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Above the rail yard, the SAW gunner was now completely obscured and so he held his fire. However, the tree he was presumably sheltering under stuck up from the cloud. Taras could hear some yelling back and forth up there as the enemy tried to figure out what to do.

Down below them, Sheeler replied to Taras, "you got it, let's go!". He and his partner, Chaul, set up near Taras at the western end of the rail car. If they tried to fire from underneath there could be problems with the rocket exhaust. They quickly moved into position to fire, a HEAT round already loaded into the Carl Gustav. Sheeler intended to take some time lining up his aim point, the large tree that loomed out of the cloud.

In the LAV, Delaney and Mac worked on the Major, becoming increasingly more frustrated at their lack of progress. Bezhov mounted up and Rachel raised the ramp. After helping Bezhov, Fox and McRae crossed to the far side of the pipeline, waiting for the LAV to move out.

Jagelis tossed the demo charge onto the rear deck of the BTR, then lay down to get some cover and plugged his ears. This was going to be loud!

Meanwhile, Kelsey warned everyone that someone was using a demo charge. Tremblay heard this and realised the man he was tracking in the Kodiak's turret optics wasn't a friendly! He managed to loose a burst of MG fire at Jagelis as he threw the charge, but was unable to tell if he hit and now the target was out of sight. Unable to do anything else, Tremblay waited for the explosion that would tear the BTR apart.

Pütsep spotted the explosive charge as it landed on the rear deck of the BTR, not too far from him. In a burst of suicidal heroism, Pütsep leaped up onto one of the BTR's immense tires and, reaching up onto the deck, grabbed and threw the demo charge back in Jagelis' direction! He then dove off the wheel and tackled Kelsey, bringing her down and protecting her with his own body.

The Carl Gustav fireteam was already deployed and Private Droz took good aim at the tree while under cover of the smoke blanket. The large target was clearly visible through the 3x optical sight with a 17 degree (300 mrad) field of view. The rocket propelled FFV-551 round provided with a rather flat trajectory would be soon on its way. Meanwhile Constable Chau prepared a second HEAT round discarding the waterproof container while checking the status of the munition. It seemed to be OK.

FIRE WHEN READY! Ordered Taras then he let loose a short PKM burst in the general area around the tree in order to keep the SAW gunner down in a prone position and offering a more lucrative target for the incoming airburst.

The rest of the team at this point were under cover but anxious to observe the results of the Carl Gustav shooting.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The sun broke through the clouds again, and the wind continued to blow in fitful gusts.

Inside the Lavin' Spoonful's rear compartment, Delaney and Mac worked on the Major, while Bezhov looked on. It wasn't going well. Mac tried everything he could think of. "Check him again," he said, "there's something we're missing."

McRae and Fox started down the hill, trailing the LAV on the other side of the pipes. The footing was a little unsure. They were on a road but it wasn't paved and ran with water, slippery with mud.

By the BTR, Pütsep smiled in apology. He got up and looked around, puzzled. "Where is kaboom? There should be Earth-shattering kaboom, yes?" He offered Kel a hand up.

The BTR drove forward with a bellow of diesel smoke. The smoke grenade, still spewing a red cloud, rolled off the back and fell to the mud. It drove under the pipes, then turned right and began climbing the hill up towards the LAV. Actually, it was on the road on the same side of the pipes as McRae and Fox so it was driving towards them.

Taras fired a burst up at the unseen SAW gunner, to unknown effect. Droz aimed the Carl Gustav as Chau made sure it was properly loaded. Another few seconds would do it and he would pull the trigger. "HEAT round up!" said Chau, indicating the weapon was ready to fire.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Team Bravo was expecting the incoming blast from the Carl Gustav any time now. Taras let loose a second burst of machine gun fire to keep the enemy down. Private Sheeler, itching for a fight after being unable to pinpoint the SAW gunner with accuracy, tried a double tap with the C1A1 rifle in the general direction of the covering fire. He was proud to put his weapon to work. Actually, Canada was the first country to field the FAL. It served as the country standard battle rifle from the early 1954 to 1984, when it began to be replaced by the lighter Diemaco C7, a licenced version of the AR-15.

Troy and Bajorek remained well under the protection of the railcars waiting for further instructions, any activity on the radio or shoulder checking the surroundings. They heard a big engine roaring up in the hill, the sound was unmistakable in between the concerto of different calibers zooming around. Then it happened:

BOOOOOM!

The backblast kicked a good deal of rocks and sand but the heavy rain from last night prevented the creation of a cloud of dust right behind the fireteam. The sonic boom could be heard echoing in the surrounding mountains.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The Carl Gustav roared, backblast kicking up gravel and grit from the train yard. The target was the tree protruding from the dense cloud of white smoke 140m away. There was another loud BANG! as the round impacted, also echoing off the hills like ripples in a pond. Debris was scattered all around: bits of bark, splinters of wood, shards of branches and shredded leaves. If the SAW gunner wasn't dead due to some vital organ being punctured, he was likely stunned by the blast.

Smoke wisped from the launcher's venturi nozzle as the last 2 members of the team moved up, ready to make the next bound.

Kelsey and Pütsep waited for the demo charge to go off, but were disappointed. Maybe Jagelis hadn't set the detonator or fuse correctly? Either way, both were startled when the 84mm HEAT round slammed into the tree above where the SAW gunner was located. They were fortunately far enough away (over 100m) to be fairly safe but it was unexpected, to say the least!

They were gratified to see the BTR pulling away to what was presumed to be a safer location, although that left them a lot more vulnerable.

Lee kept the Kodiak rolling downhill at a walking pace to allow the dismounts, McRae and Fox, to keep up. As it traveled, the LAV's turret traversed left, then fired 3 rounds. The empty shells were ejected out the front of the turret, clanged off the hull to the ground. There was a trio of explosions from within the woods but it was difficult to tell what effect they had.

Down the hill from Fox and Andy, the BTR's engine roared as it laboured up the hill towards them. It was unclear if they had heard the transmission. The commander's hatch was open but no one was directing the APC from there; Pütsep was not visible.

The sound of the various weapons fire and explosions echoed back and forth from the wooded hillsides around them.

Andy kept his eyes on the BTR and made sure that he kept moving forward as close to the pipes as possible, if there was a Blue on Blue incident he hoped that he could find some cover there. They hadn't had enough time for all the dispirit units of the alliance to train together and get to know each other and confusion was always possible.

As he moved he kept alert for any dangers to the LAV, that, after all was the whole point of him being out here with his ass in the wind.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Well...that was our best chance... The thought lingered about for a second right after the explosion rocked the tree turning it into a gigantic piñata. If the personalized business card of the ukrainian was not deadly enough he hoped, at least, that it would cause enough physical and psychological damage to reduce the level of threat from the SAW gunner. Taras understood that he was commanding a fire support team and he couldn't afford to be pinned down by a lonely trooper. It was time to move.

Soviet book on tactics was written on different characters than those of the rest of the Bravo Element but stressing nonetheless the need for violent action through a steady "fix & flank" diet. And this is what Taras was having in mind for the next step:

Come back here! We are moving East!

After recalling the Carl Gustav fireteam the entire element would move East along the railway tracks under the protection offered by the bulky boxcars. Shevchenko wanted to close-in and go for the kill hitting the enemy in their left side or rear while they were busy engaging the Alpha ground element. The envelopment would prevent the escape of the rogue troops.

Private Sheeler, the most enthusiastic member of the crew punctuated the HEAT round effect with another 7,62 mm. double tap. Get some!

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn 8:

The BTR kept chugging up the hill on the west side of the pipes, not going hell bent for leather but moving at a human running pace towards Fox and McRae. It didn't seem likely that it would hit the two men as there was enough room to the side to dodge it if necessary. Kel's radioing didn't seem to have any effect.

Across the pipeline from Fox and McRae, the LAV kept rolling down the hill. Deciding that the threat from the woods was contained by his fire, Tremblay opened the hatch and stood up in the commander's seat, then waved the BTR down, holding up a palm to halt it. The BTR's driver seemed to understand and the BTR stopped, the driver popping his head out his own hatch.

Down at the railroad flat, Taras got his team moving. There hadn't been time to get out another round to reload the Carl Gustav, instead they all moved east, in the opposite direction they'd been moving before. This would likely taken them up into the southern or rear flank of the enemy forces in and around the eastern end of the parking lot.

Turns 9-14

The LAV idled as Tremblay sought to find out the answer to Kel's question. The BTR's driver nodded at Tremblay's clear hand signal, then sat down and started to get the massive APC turned around. It was difficult and once he managed it he waited for further instructions.

The smoke grenade obscuring the parking lot still burned and would continue to do so for a little while yet.

Kel was facing east, in the direction of the Humvee, but still in a somewhat exposed position. She still held a grenade in her hand, not needed at the moment but not necessarily forgotten. Pütsep grabbed her arm and urged her to get behind the western-most wall of the guard shack, where they would have some kind of cover. Kel was still able to see around the SW corner, and Pütsep moved to peek around the NW corner, to see if Jagelis was still on the north side of the shack.

Down at the flat land by the railroad tracks Taras' first 2 grenades were burned out but one was still giving off a thick cloud, providing some cover. The SAW gunner had gone quiet. Taras' team still boogied to the east, down the side of the somewhat-overgrown railroad tracks.

A momentary calm in the firefight helped Taras to communicate with Troy. There was no sign of the machine gunner and the ukrainian paid attention to the sound of engines but the only one came from the trusty BTR struggling in its reposition. The chaotic situation, severely aggravated by the extensive use of smoke hampered the maneuver of troops. Taras was confident that the team would arrive on time to deliver a deadly blow to the main threat at the parking.

While approaching the middle part of the boxcar convoy Taras would ready yet another smoke grenade before the last one extinguishes.

Turns 15-22

As he moved, Troy reported to Kelsey, "Alpha, this is Bravo... moving east along the rail and we'll come up from below. Over."

The BTR started back down the hill at a slow pace, followed by McRae and Fox at a 10m interval. On the other side of the pipes, the LAV also followed at a 10m interval interval with Delaney and Mac. Mac watched west, Delaney south.

The smoke grenade near where Putsep and Kel were hiding burned out, as did the ones at the rail yard. Engines echoed off the hills. It was likely that vehicles other than the APCs moving around!

Kel threw her grenade, then yelled "Grenade!" and ducked down. Putsep ducked down beside her. Her grenade went off with a loud bang, deafening them and sending echoes off the hills and through the woods. She then popped her smoke as the BTR peeked it's nose from beyond the trees. She could see it before the Humvee and truck did, and so there was ample time for her to pop another smoke and place it at the corner where the wind took it to the east.

Back against the west side of the small building, Putsep was looking for the BTR. When it came into view, he waved to get the driver's attention.

Taras' team reached their position past the end of the train at the crossing and deployed looking north. The could see a 10-ton flatbed truck parked at the intersection by the south side of the store (a sign above the front door proclaimed "IOCO GROCERATERIA"). It was US military style, with a built-in cargo crane. Loaded onto it was another Bobcat, a small wheeled excavation vehicle. They could see a militiaman carrying an HK93 rifle standing beside the open driver's door, talking with another armed HK93-armed militiaman.

Up in the building above the truck, in the window on the far left facing them on the top floor, was another armed militiaman. He had binoculars and was leaning out, trying to look west towards the parking lot where the gunfire had been coming from. He also had a hand radio.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Bravo Detachment reached the end of the train convoy and were able to notice the large truck parked at the intersection and the armed militia standing by, probably waiting to proceed with the salvage of the warhead. The lonely figure on the window of a decrepit building was focusing a pair of binos at the chaotic scene trying to find a suitable target. The radio confirmed him as a valuable spotter.

Taras ordered Troy and Bajorek to occupy a ditch next to a swinging barrier to cover with their weapons the Carl Gustav fireteam. Droz and Chau, manning the tubeh deployed next to them right behind a concrete parapet offering some level of protection from the prone position.

Bazooka shoot at window guy on my command. Taras whispered the clear intention and then signalled Sheeler, the most courageos of his crew, to crawl with him to the other concrete parapet on the other side of the swinging barrier. We'll get the militia!

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #85):

After following the rails east across the north-south road, Taras and Sheeler dropped to the ground and began crawling forward through the tall grass and weeds towards a crumbling heavily-weathered traffic barrier. It was set on the side of the road and provided nice cover.

A matching "Jersey barrier" was also on the left side of the road. That was where the Carl Gustav rocket team set up, Droz propping the barrel on the weathered surface. Chau took the HEAT round she'd gotten from her pack and now loaded it into the rear of the rocket launcher. "Heat up!" she reported as Droz zeroed in on the target, the spotter in the window.

The remaining 2 members of the team deployed in the shallow ditch to the right of the traffic barrier. They aiming their weapons uphill at the militia by the trucks, Bajorek with her shotgun and DeFazio with his Sterling SMG. Both waited for Taras to give the order to open fire. Bajorek said, "I got the left guy, the driver."

GM Note: this is just a clarification of what's going on with Taras' unit. These actions cover 1 turn. Everyone may still post their actions and I will summarize and resolve.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn 23

Taras' rocket team were in position. Chau loaded a HEAT round while Droz aimed at the spotter in the store window. They were ready to go. As were Bajorek and Chau beside them in the shallow ditch to the left. Taras and Sheeler were just getting into position off to their right, across the road. Taras crawled up and propped the bipod of his PKM on the pitted concrete barrier. Sheeler unslung his rifle but hadn't yet had time to actually aim.

The LAV rolled down one side of the pipes and then stopped, uphill from the BTR. They waited for the BTR to clear the pipes to advance, so they wouldn't be afoul of each other. Andy walked slowly backwards, keeping an eye on the west and northern flanks. He spotted movement in the tree line at about his 2 o'clock, but he couldn't get a clear shot where he was due to the massive pipes. He would have to climb onto, over or through them.

The BTR rolled into view from behind the woods, as Kel's smoke canister started to burn and stream white smoke to the east. Putsep took off towards the BTR, as Kel, gripping her carbine, peeked around the corner to give him cover. What she saw startled her. As best she could see through the growing white haze, the Humvee was gone. The Deuce was pointed to the northeast and the canvas top had been thrown back exposing a quad-barreled 14.5mm KPV AA gun pointing in her direction. There was a gunner and 2 other crew manning the weapon, and it looked like they were waiting for the BTR or LAV to come into view for a clear shot.

Apparently, now was the time and it started to fire. She could hear the 14.5mm rounds whipping by just over her head and by her arm, some were green tracers trailing a wisp of smoke. One round hit the far wall of the guardhouse in a spray of concrete dust but the round didn't penetrate the cinderblock. Several rounds struck the BTR with a clangs and showers of sparks! The slowly-moving BTR slowed to a stop, it's left wheels chewed up. Caught in mid-run, Putsep went down.

Further east, by the crossroads, the 2 militiamen by the intersection perked up when the quad AA gun opened up. It was like they were waiting for some kind of signal. They split up and walked a few steps apart, Then began looking in different directions (one south towards Taras and his detachment, the other east, towards the direction they came in).

At the sound of multiple heavy machineguns ripping through the air, Andy turned to see the BTR getting hit and shuddering to a halt. He keyed his radio and said, "LAV, lay suppressive fire down the tracer trail move south at speed to get plain sight and then nail whatever's firing."

He knelt there, absorbed with issuing orders, hopefully the BTR would return fire and hold the enemy's attention as the LAV got in a position for the kill.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

It was a very fluid situation at the railroad junction. The sudden loud burst of rapid fire from the anti-aircraft quad precipitated the actions of the "Bravo" team. Sgt. Shevchenko was waiting for Private Sheeler to take position but this was no longer an option. Their position was about to be compromised at a short notice.

FIRE! FIRE! The order almost came muffled by the hail of automatic fire erupting from the PKM in two bursts: First one on the eastwards walking militia as he was in his sector and using the same arc of fire, Taras engaged the other militia with a second fusilade. The bipod supported prone postion and the respectable rate of fire of the GPMG was expected to overcome the lesser accuracy of the area weapon.

At that time, Constable Bajorek, a good looking and respected member of the RCMP, had already her target, the driver, on sight and ready to be dispatched. The sudden southwards turn of the militia man put him squared inside the ring sight of the pump action shotgun. Luckily enough for that distance the shell chambered was a slug. This type of munition was quite easily to be foudnd in the Law Enforcement armories and duty kits, not because door breaching was expected but mainly due to the threat of dealing with bears. A not so uncommon incident to be found in the pre war daily tasks of the Mounted Police.

Next to Constable Bajorek and already aware of the target selection, Troy pulled the trigger of the Sterling SMG hoping to hit the other militia man that now appeared to be moving East. A weapon basically recoiless due to the sheer mass of the bolt against the 9 mm Parabellum pistol round was very easy to shoot and Troy, being a comms man and not very acquainted with the firing range, decided to fire on automatic easily thumbing forward the selector in the A position. Troy expected to hit the target inside his flip rear peep sight numbered 1.

BOOOOM!!!
Private Droz was already familiar with the tremendous blast of the Carl Gustav and confidently had pressed the trigger to do a window delivery at the spotter. The three powered optical sight brought the target very close to his retina. Private Droz could easily identify the target handheld radio and his efforts to locate the Alpha team through a pair of binos. Constable Chau didn't waste time and proceeded to prepare yet another HEAT round from his pack to feed the CG for the incoming battle. They were down to only two.

Shit! shit! shit!
Private Sheeler quickly reached the parapet after the energetic crawl but was unable to bring the FN FAL in line against his target. By instinct he would focus on the primary threat coming down South towards their position. His right eardrums were suddenly Pearlharboured by Shevchenko's 7,62x54R rafale...

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn 24

The LAV started to roll forward, and Mac and Delaney jogged to keep up with it. As the Kodiak hove into view and pulled up behind the guard house, it was met by a hailstorm of fire from the waiting quad KPVs. The thick white smoke from Kel's grenade was starting to obscure the AA gun's line of sight. When the LAV hove into view, it could only get a shot off after it had moved into a hull-down position. Most of the 14.5mm rounds slammed into the guard house, a few went over, but being hull-down worked to protect the vehicle from any damage.

To acquire the target, Tremblay switched to thermal so the smoke wasn't a problem for him. Noting this was an unarmoured vehicle and there were friendlies immediately to his front, he switched to the 7.62mm coaxial MG with a flick of his thumb.

"On the way!"

He pulled the joystick's trigger and the pavement around the flatbed and the trees behind it erupted with bullet hit. The gunner was jerked back in his seat with one burst, while the next 2 bursts put the other two crew down immediately.

Mac and Delaney pulled up beside Kel. Mac looked around the right side of the building, Delaney on the ground around the left side, RPK set up on its bipod.

Further east, the Carl Gustav discharged with a roar, accompanied by small arms fire and the chatter of the PKM. The 84mm HEAT round impacted near (or on) the spotter and he disappeared in a white flash and explosion of smoke. An enormous amount of debris was scattered up into the air: roof shingles, flaming parts of wooden beams, other building materials. Fragments of the spotter.

As flaming debris rained down, Taras pressed the trigger on the PKM and directed a stream of tracers towards the rightward militiaman. He was caught in the burst and went down in the road. Traversing right, he caught the other militiaman with a second burst. He staggered against the driver side door of the truck. Hot brass struck Sheeler as he brought his FN up to aim. Across the road, Bajorek and DeFazio opened fire, peppering the area with lead, but it was unclear if they had any success.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The militia driver turned south to cover his sector but was still near the door, then was hit by Taras automatic fire and stumbled backwards into it. The guy who was going east came down fast wounded or dead. The ambush action was far from finished and the ukrainian delivered another short and controlled burst towards the driver. This was happening just in front of the truck provided with the crane and bobcat that eventually was supposed to rescue the missing warhead:

Constable Bajorek didn't seem to find the fruitless expenditure of the slug too much to bear and recklessly pumped another one into the chamber firing again against the stumbling driver.

Troy tried and failed yet tried again. Another 9 mm Parabellum volley was sent downrange almost at the same time as his RCMP buddy with the long gun next to him was blasting away. The smokey end of the barrel was promptly swept away by the eastern blowing wind but the atmosphere quickly started to impregnate with the sweet smell of cordite.

The Carl Gustav fireteam was left without apparent targets or instructions. The tube was already reloaded and Private Droz decided to keep an eye at the possibility of any vehicle coming across in front of the Bravo team. He was aware of the enemy vehicles at the parking lot. Even reinforcements coming from the East could complicate the situation. He quickly realized that they were holding a very good position but he was in doubt about how long they would be able to maintain it. Meanwhile, his loader Constable Chau, after witnessing the sudden and violent shooting taking place decided to prepare his trusty Heckler and Koch for action after reloading the recoiless gun. The MP5A2 had a fixed stock made of a synthetic polymer with a three position fire selector that Chau set up for a lenghty monologue.

Private Sheeler apart from being late, hit in the head by soviet brass and half deaf by the PKM roar joined gladly and delivered an aimed shot at the stumbling driver. The other militia, he felt, didn't seem to require his services immediately.

Anyone to the west would have taken out Bezhov when he moved up past them. The east was mostly blocked by the large pipes, so he might as well cover the northern sector as Andy moved to the pipes himself.

02:36, Yesterday: helbent4 rolled 8 using 1d10 with rolls of 8. PC Initiative.

A building out of line of sight east from the parking lot exploded in a shower of flaming debris. Kel, Mac moved out from in front of the main gun to the right of the LAV. Delaney got up and ran left, towards the fence and treeline. Meanwhile, Tremblay poured more machinegun fire into the truck. Bullet holes riddled the cab and the engine compartment of the truck. Now that he knew there was no one in front of the LAV he would now switch weapons and engage with 25mm HE.

Reaching Putsep first, Kel noticed he was alive but unconscious. There was a large hole blown out of his lower right leg and he was bleeding out. His foot was almost severed, attached only by a few strings of tendon with the bone showing. Mac reached him at the same time and opened up his medical bag.

Ready to cover Fox's bound, Andy knelt behind the LAV as Fox moved up. He didn't see any further movement from the woods to NE, but his angle was not the best. Fox moved up beside him to his right, turning to the south so he could cover that direction as well as the west.

A little debris was raining down from the store. A few tracers from the LAV's coax zipped by dozens of feet overhead. The truck's driver dropped to the ground and attempted to crawl under the truck. Bajorek fired her shotgun again, and Troy continued hosing the front truck down, trying to hit the driver as he dived to the ground, with uncertain results. Taras fired another burst accompanied by a shot Sheeler's FN, and the driver stopped moving.

Bajorek reloaded the rocket launcher with another HEAT round as Chau got her MP-5 ready.

Over at the store, the roof started to collapse and orange flames began to lick out of the crater where the second floor lefthand window used to be. One of the sheets of plywood covering the 1st floor window had come loose, and a dark-skinned boy climbed out and dropped to the ground, then sprinted towards Bravo, into the line of fire.

Halt fire! Halt!

The command of Staff Sargent Shevchenko was almost unnecessary. The entire team could witness how the militia driver went down under a hail of bullets. The sudden presence of a panicky young boy coming out of the previously panelled up window took them by surprise. Completely unaware of the machine gun bullets flying past coming from the West he was about to certainly put his life "in the line of fire". To the poor boy's luck was the fact that the road was in a down slope from the parking lot entrance and his smaller frame and current speed offered less of a desirable target. Still, he was an obviously dangerous position and at the worst possible moment.

Taras tapped Private Sheeler in the shoulder without saying a word but with the clear intention of make him aware of his move. Then he bolted out of his protected position behind the parapet and started to run towards the tree about 30 meters away to his 2 o'clock. His idea was to get closer to the kid, as much as possible, without compromising his safety (i.e. crossing the road) and be able to give him instructions to protect his life.

The rest of the Bravo Team would see how his Sargent demonstrated initiative. They would be in overwatch mode covering the approaches in order to protect their team leader.

00:33, Today: helbent4 rolled 8 using 1d10 with rolls of 8. NPC Initiative.
00:33, Today: helbent4 rolled 6 using 1d10 with rolls of 6. PC Initiative.

Inside the Kodiak's turret, Tremblay fired bursts of 25mm AP ammunition into the truck. Tremblay's shots struck all around the truck, peppering it with shrapnel. One shell struck and penetrated the fuel tank, and fuel spilled onto the pavement. No one seemed alive on the vehicle.

In between the LAV and the BTR, Kelsey and Mac worked on Putsep, trying to stabilise him. It didn't look good, Mac nodded at Kel and she got ready to move onto the BTR and the crew inside. Kel could hear someone moaning inside.

Down by the store, DeFazio pulled the empty magazine out from the Sterling, replacing it in his ammo pouch. He then pulled out a fresh magazine, inserted it into the side ammunition well, then pulled back the charging handle on the side to complete the loading process. Bajorek started to reload as well, Droz covering the road with the Carl Gustav and Chau with her MP-5. Chau, however, covered the rear. No telling when someone would pop out of some random direction!

The debris stopped falling around them. Flames started licking out of the hole in the elderly wooden roof. Taras could hear screams and cries for help from the store, but no gunshots as of yet. Springing up while Sheeler covered him, Taras ran towards the treeline 30m to his NE, making about 15m. The boy saw him and changed course, running towards Taras.

Back at the refinery, Andy saw a bush move about 120-130m to his 1 o'clock in the treeline, but couldn't see anyone clearly enough to take a shot. Fox saw someone was there as well. They were at the northern end under the "overpass" where the pipes were raised up to allow vehicles to pass under. Andy kneeling, facing north using the structure as cover. Fox was beside him, to his left.

"Master McRae, I got movement at 130 metres, to our north-northeast. Probable foot-mobile."

Kelsey lets go of Putsep's leg once Mac has the T on and hustles towards the BTR, an experienced gaze running over the damage to the right side suspension.  If it was just one or two axles that are damaged it is possible to trundle up that side in a fast field expedient repair to get the vehicle mobile again, much like you would short track a continuous tread vehicle.  Her focus is though, quickly, on the moan she heads instead, beelined for that location, leaping up on the vehicle to check on the gunner and driver in an athletic bound, and as she does she receives the transmission on the movement and her eyes go straight to the turret, she might have to make use of that before first aid could be rendered.  The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or some BS like that.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn 28:

Unable to see a damn thing where he was located because of the smoke grenade, Seth decided to displace towards the southern building. Picking up his RPK he got up and ran for it around the rear of the LAV. He only made it to the northern guard shack in the time he had.

Fox aimed his grenade launcher where he'd seen the greenery move. Andy in effect spotted for him.

At Andy's direction, Fox aimed his rifle and grenade launcher at where they'd seen the movement. Tremblay ceased fire. The truck was still intact but no longer an apparent threat. Although it had suffered 7.62mm coaxial and 25mm chain gun fire the truck was still intact. Tremblay kept hosing the target down with the autocannon and more 25mm holes appeared in the cab and engine compartment.

He was still aiming using thermal, as Kel's smoke grenade was still burning and releasing smoke to the east, partially obscuring the truck.

Two of the BTR's right side tires were shredded but it looked like it would still be mobile, if slowly. Moving to the BTR, Kel looked in the open left-side hatch into the passenger compartment. The inside was splashed in blood, she could smell the thick scent. Looking forward, she could see the driver slumped into his seat head thrown back, unmoving. The gunner had collapsed off his seat in the small turret onto the floor below. He moaned weakly, bleeding out.

To the east, in the direction of the store, a large black puff of smoke was rapidly bourne before the westerly wind. A column of greyish white smoke started to rise, also streaming east. The black puff was from the rocket explosion, while the white smoke indicated some kind of wood-fed fire, a structural fire.

At the store, Bajorek and DeFazio reloaded. Droz and Chau kept watch (Droz looking north to the road, Chau to the south.). They were all still on the ground but preparing to move on Taras' order. Sheeler covered Taras as he moved forward towards the treeline to his 1 o'clock. He only made it part way. At his urging, the boy changed course to run towards Taras.

They could all hear the crackling of flames and screaming of people trapped in the old store building.

Kelsey called out to Mac "Two men down!  Going in!"  She dove into the open hatch to see if she could stop the bleeding on the Gunner, eyes going to the driver as she does.  She suspects he is already beyond help.  She leaves a bloody hand print on the hatch combing as she enters the BTR, and is right in to get more blood on her hands again.  She tries not to think about the reason these men were hurt is they were obeying her orders.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

The Canadian Forces standard FFV-551 HEAT round was designed around an explosive shaped charge that used the Munroe effect to create a very high-velocity partial stream of metal in a state of superplasticity to punch up to 400 mm of RHA (a benchmark of Rolled Homogeneous Armor) with ease. Not a chance for the spotter and the structure to take it like a man and live to tell.

Contrary to a widespread misconception, HEAT rounds do not depend in any way on thermal phenomena for their effectiveness neither the speed of impact makes a big difference at all. In particular, the shaped charge jets do not "melt their way" through armor. In this case it was the combination of the high explosive and the remnants of the rocket fuel what assisted in starting the fire in the western side of the building. The sheer dry condition of the wooden frame helping to spread it.

Although only a few seconds had come to pass, the violent impact shaking down the house and the subsequent smoke brought panic to the unexpected tenants. More so if they were kept captives under the militia prerrogatives. One got away, though. Before making a further move and having the young fellow at earshot Taras asked:

How many bad guys are inside?

After watching, targeting and destroying the militia spotter there was the possibility to deal with more of them inside. It will be a matter of seconds to have them bailing out as the situation was developing. By the time that the ukrainian reached the tree he already had unshouldered the heavy General Purpose Machine Gun and made ready the more handy AKS-74U while waiting for the intel. The old store was barely 60 meters away and his position covered an incredibly good angle of view.

Back in the trenches the rest of the Bravo team was left to cover the approaches. The 25 mike-mike going off in the parking lot were reassuring. Somebody was in the receiving end and was getting some extra turpentine from the Lovin' Spoonful.

WHOOOAA!!!Private Sheeler couldn't curb his enthusiasm.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turn: 29

It looked (and smelled) to Kel like the driver was dead and she only wasted a second on him. His eyes were open, staring at the hatch above his seat/

The gunner (she couldn't recall his name offhand) was still alive, barely. Probably, the steel of the turret had absorbed some of the bullet's kinetic energy on it's way through before striking him. It was also something of a glancing hit, chewing through the side of his abdomen while missing his major organs.

She heard Mac reply from outside, "be there in a sec, tell them to hold on!"

Outside, she heard the "thump!" and explosion of Fox firing the 40mm grenade, then its impact. Andy saw Fox fire, the shot falling 25m long.

In the LAV, Tremblay kept up with the 25mm. He sprayed the truck's cab, echoes from the cannon fire and AP hits continually rebounding off the surrounding hillsides.

Over by the store, Taras met the boy at the treeline. He was panting from exertion, eyes wide with fear as he took in the other armed people deployed near them. "There are about fifteen of us inside!" The GPMG thumped to the ground beside Taras, shed with a certain amount of haste. He unslung the AK-74SU and made it ready to go.

Taras (and the people with him) heard a small-calibre shot (pistol?) from inside the now-burning store, accompanied by more screams.

The Staff Sargent adopted a prone position with the young boy. Then, looking over his shoulder motioned to his Team Bravo:

Team! Take positions over that house!

There was a single dwelling about 70 meters right from the current position of the maritime element. It was closer to the troubled stored and offered better protection and angle of coverage than the current ambush point by the junction. Taras was able to provide cover by fire if needed while the team would be conducting the maneuver. Kelsey stops the bleed out as she waits on Mac, turns over her casualty once he arrives and after snagging and plopping on her Kevlar, the glengary shoved in a pocket quickly as she moves, she checks over the main and coax as she replies to Bravo's request.

Damnit, civvies.  Much like Indiana Jones and Snakes.  Civvies, why did it have to be civvies?

Lima One Seven I want that TOW, seek and destroy.  Lima one six and Lima Deltas, I want the North flank covered, keep up the good work.  Any reports?  Alpha One, over."  She is referring to the Dismounts as 'Deltas'.

She absently wipes the fresh blood off on her fatigues as she checks the guns, if they are operational she'll turn them to cover their 'backs', if not she will prepare to abandon the BTR.  She calls down into the vehicle.  "Mac, once you have Petrovich stable, see if you can drive this big bitch, mind her listing right on those two bad tires!"

Sargent Shevchenko at this point was covering the yomp of the team from the current position until they would settle by the house. After putting down the Motorola he deployed the folding stock, racked the bolt and aimed at the store with the AKS-74U. The boy was looking in amazement at the actions of the ukrainian warrior.

Tell me boy; who's inside that building? How many people with guns?

By now the scared to death boy would be more confident after lying down next to a well armed trooper willing to help using his radio and deploying his assault weapon.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turns 30-32

The guns looked to Kel to be functional. The bullet had avoided the weapon or turret mechanical systems. She manually turned the turret to cover the rear.

Up the hill, Fox's second grenade missed the target completely. He swore and reloaded. Delaney moved to McRae and Fox's position. Their job, as they understood it, was to protect the northern flank and they currently had it under watch as best they could. Fox and Delaney waited for an order from McRae to move out if needed.

Sticking her head out the hatch, Rachel yelled aver to Kel, "we have hostages trapped in a burning building! Jesus fuck we have to move NOW!" There wasn't anything complicated for her to do in terms of route planning, other than drive around the guard shack, through the parking lot past the truck and down the hill to the store.

To save time, Rachel started the LAV and pulled it around the front of the guard shack, gunning the engine. Ceasing his punishment of the flak truck, Tremblay rogered his instructions. Although he would kill the TOW if he saw it he was, after all, inside the LAV and would go where it went.

"Putsep's stable, I dragged him out of the way behind the south guard shack. I'll get to any wounded in here when I can." Mac said as he climbed inside the BTR. Pulling the driver's body out of his seat he sat down and was able to start it up immediately. "We're good to go!"

Down by the store, the boy answered the question as best he could. "Yes sir, there were five of them with us inside. I think two outside?" They were hidden in the woods near where the road crossed the train tracks (one branch heading down to a small abandoned marina). Taras could hear more shots and screams from the direction of the store. It wasn't yet engulfed in flame but the fire was spreading through the roof.

The Bravo detachment moved out, heading to a small building 70m to the east. It was some kind of pre-war utility structure, possibly a pump house dating back to the Ioco settlement. The team skirted the rusted chain-link fence and deployed in the NW corner of the surrounding hedge. Once they arrived, they began establishing direct observation of the store.

Alpha 1 this is Bravo 2...We have at least 5 armed tangos and I'm hearing shots inside. We need you to bring the armor and make a hole. Over.

Taras indicated the boy to get up and go to the utility structure secured by the rest of the Bravo team as it offered better protection. The flames were spreading over the rooftop steadily and only hampered by the recent rain. Were the hostages being executed at this point? Shevchenko wouldn't want to think so. The boy had escaped and his action probably triggered a chain of reactions including shots being fired by the hostage takers to regain control of the situation. In any case there was a sense of urgency punctuated by the building catching fire. Without support the situation could turn out into a bloodbath and Taras could only think "in Russian".

She hits the radio  "This is Alpha One.  We do this by the numbers, this is almost certainly a trap!  Alpha is covering the North, Lima Three sweep right and try to get behind Bravo.  Lima Deltas, Lima One-Six and Company, find that TOW, sweep left.  Bravo give lima a minute so we don't step in it, if you can.

She yells down to Mac  "Mac, fire her up and give me power!  We'll be following everyone else, got it?"

She judges around where the infantry was firing and starts laying into the area with her coax, adding the main gun to it in short bursts.  She's hoping that main gun will make some 'puckering' occur.  Her mouth tightens into a rather grim grin as she starts firing.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Turns 33-38

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms...spn=0.005828,0.01089

As Kel hosed down the trees where the dismounts had spotted movement, Andy moved the dismounts up the pipeline. Mac backed the BTR up so she had direct LOS on the area. She couldn't see anything in her sights but anyone in the area would be good and suppressed by the 14.5mm main gun. As she fired, Mac took the opportunity to stabilise the gunner as he lay on the deck of the APC, bleeding out as the hot spent brass clanged down around him. Mac dragged him out of the way, further into the rear.

Mac said, "hold on, man, you're going to make it!

"Good news Kel, he's looking good! Abdominal wound, lost a lot of blood but no major organs damaged."

Pushing up the left side of the pipe (the right side being in the line of fire from the BTR's MG fire) the dismounts (McRae, Fox, Delaney) ran into trouble almost immediately. A shot from someone hidden in the trees (further north of where Kel was shooting) felled Delaney. He had been hit in the head and it didn't look good, but McRae spotted where the shot came from. There was no time to grieve or even render First Aid as Fox opened up on McRae's orders. Fox's 40mm HE grenades went wild but McRae spotted movement through a break in the woods. The Ghillie-suited enemy sniper had displaced yet again and was lining up another shot, but McRae had seen him break cover and was ready. He lined him up and fired, the sniper went down out of sight.

At was at that time Fox and McRae found the TOW armed Humvee. It had been waiting in ambush to the north. Using the back roads it had circled up and around, using the slope of the land to find a hull-down spot in the refinery where it could fire first at the approaching LAV. It was probable that the sniper had been deployed to make some noise and movement, used as a distraction to draw the LAV northwards into an ambush. However, the deployment and movement of the dismounts had forced the sniper to engage early.

The Humvee broke cover, presumably trying to escape north and then east, perhaps intending to set an ambush at the store. This time it was Fox's turn to shine and he loaded and fired a 40mm HEDP at the Humvee as it peeled out. It hit the Humvee squarely in the rear and the vehicle exploded, the sound echoing off the mountains.

Bravo and Taras reported the TOW wasn't in the store area. Under Tremblay's direction the LAV took the most direct route. This was a little contrary to orders, but time was of the essence and the chance of ambush was low (but not non-existant).

Bravo reported to Taras that they spotted a group of hostages under guard moving north up 3rd Ave. 2 had rifles, 2 armed with SMGs (Uzis) but no anti-tank weapons. Probably they were being moved from the burning structure to the one immediately north. There were only 12-13 hostages, so some remained behind in the store. As the boy waited to the south for the LAV to arrive, Taras moved to where he could see up the road. The hostages (a mixed group of men, women and children of different races) were moving northwards under direct threat of death by their armed captors, if slowly.

Rescuing the hostages was important but to Taras' "Russian" way of thinking the first priority was to neutralise the guards and let the chips fall where they may. The LAV roared down towards the intersection of Ioco and 4th Ave (where the truck was parked) so Taras directed it to tern left up 4th, catching the hostiles in a pincer movement that would put them in a crossfire from the west (LAV), south (Taras) and southeast (Bravo). The guards had a moment of panic when the LAV came into view off to their immediate west and Taras' shouted warning convinced them that further struggle was hopeless. They surrendered, dropping their weapons and laying on the ground per Lee's shouted instructions as the relieved hostages were directed out of the line of fire (to the SW).

Kelsey didn't have time to worry about what way the LAV went when the HMMWV broke cover and exploded after the sniper also broke cover.  She wasn't too sure where the bastard in the ghillie suit was, but she could hose the general area her people shot in, and at least keep him ducking until feet could get in that area.  With that in mind, and the hostage situation firmly in Taras command, she was free to concentrate on the guns for now.

"Good work Mac....."  The sharp rapport and a secondary ammo explosion pull a loud WHOOP! from her  "I sure hope that was that bastard Jagelis that just became the star of that Bar-B-Que!  She hits the radio  "This is Alpha One, Lima Deltas just bagged a TOW, out!

She gripped the spanners of the main and coax on the BTR with bloody hands not quite delicate enough for a woman's and  walked coax fire up to around where she thought the sniper was and started defoliating there too, mixing in short bursts of the KPV with the coax.  Maybe she was in a needy mood and wanted attention.  She figured that would get some attention.

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #139):

As he entered, Taras could see Rachel zap-strapping the prone militiamen to secure their hands. Pvt. Mahanandi emerged from the rear to talk to the 13 freed hostages, who seemed to be mainly Indian, like himself.

Smoke wasn't yet pouring out the front door of the Grocerateria, but it was leaking out the upper windows. It was a white from the water-logged wooden roof and structure. The main room was dark and mostly empty except for bits of trash and piles of disassembled shelving lining the near wall. What light there was came through the boarded up window where the cover had come loose, allowing the boy to escape.

There was a body of a man near by the window lying on his face. Obviously shot trying to escape as the boy had done. Taras could see no other bodies. From what the boy said, that might mean everyone was accounted for. he'd said there were 15 hostages: the boy, the corpse, plus 13. He couldn't be sure, as English wasn't his native language.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #141):

Even with Sheeler's help there wasn't much they could do. Although moisture from the severe rain retarded the fire's progress to a degree, the result would be the inevitable destruction of the building within 5-10 minutes. The main area and 1st floor was filling up with smoke and they found it hard to breathe or see, even with gas masks and flashlights. The stairwell leading up to the second floor was solid with white smoke and would likely lead to quick asphyxiation if an ascent was braved.

Soon it was impossible to see, even on the 1st floor. Although the fire was still largely confined to the roof and crawlspace it was slowly spreading to other 2nd floor areas. Using the fire extinguisher would be a waste of CO2. Controlling and eliminating the fire would take the effort of at least one or two fire engines and crews using high-pressure water pumped in by hose.

As it was, Taras and Sheeler found themselves coughing as they dragged the single corpse outside. The body was of a male of East Indian descent, in his early 40s. There was some pre-mortem bruising and a lack of body fat, indicating some abuse and starvation. There was no ID on the body. He was shot in the back and where he fell indicated he'd tried to escape out the window and been killed for his effort. There were no other bodies inside, and the boy and other freed hostages confirmed there were only 15 of them, now all accounted for.

The spotter's body was found lying on his back on the bed of the HEMMT truck. He had been blown out the window, and was burned over most of his body, minus any clothing.

Away from them, they heard the deep chattering bark of the BTR's 14.5mm main MG as Kel continued to spray suppressive fire on the sniper's last known location. Behind her in the BTR, Mac finished working on the gunner, satisfied he'd done all he could to ensure he made it back to hospital for surgery and treatment.

In the BTR, Kel switched to IR and nothing happened. She then realised that those electronics were stripped from the gunsights (the driver was able to drive "dark" but used goggles). Anyways the sights were never equipped with thermal, but active IR that required a spotlight to function. The small turret was filled with fumes from the 40-50 rounds she'd fired off at the target.

To her front and left, Fox and Andy held their position, covered by the pipe. Fox looked after Seth but there wasn't anything he could do. The Humvee continued to burn, and one of the rockets exploded, the fuel and warhead combusting upwards in a black and red flower.

Some thoughts came across Taras mind as the scene was getting more or less under control. The suspects were already arrested and the group of civilians were relieved and forever thankful towards their liberators telling their story. Bodies were recovered and the old store started to be engulfed by flames. Not much of a problem since this was an isolated building that was already a decrepit ruin.

We need to find out was going on with BTR and what happened with the guy with the machine gun under the tree. Everybody moves to the utility building. We will secure defensive perimeter. Troy, make radio contact with Kelsey and found out was going on. As soon as we are clear we will send a search party. This is not over yet!

Shevchenko retrieved the weapons of the dead militia by the truck and also recovered his PKM. Once relocated to the indicated site it would be easier to prepare a defensive posture and organize a search squad with the LAV after getting the news from the troubled crew of the BTR.

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg #145):

The Bravo-Lima group moved to the utility building and set up a 360 degree perimeter. Tremblay positioned the LAV near the intersection of 4th and Ioco where it could cover the approaches to the east and north.

Bravo had taken no casualties, nor had the LAV (Lee, Tremblay, Bezhov and Mahanandi). They had gathered 4 obviously Neo-Nazi or New America prisoners (from their tats and shaved heads) and confiscated various weapons as well as 14 very hungry and abused hostages. The hostages were mainly non-white (Indian and Asian) and included 3 children, 8 men aged 14-50 and 3 women aged 19-45.

The prisoners refused to divulge their names or other personal details.

Retrieved weapons included 4x 7.62mm HK91 rifles with 4 spare magazines each, 2x 9mm UZis with 6 spare magazines each. None of these had typical manufacturer stampings or serial numbers but looked to have been competently made and marked as made by the "Christian Survival Network". Taras had been briefed that New America had produced perhaps tens of thousands of unlicenced copies of the HK91 and other weapons before and during the war. There were 6 captured sidearms, 4x .45ACP Colt M1911A1 (probably copies) with 2 spare magazines each, a .357 Colt Python with 2 speedloaders and a 9mm S&W Model 5946 with RCMP markings. The weapons belonging to the spotter were gone, probably wherever his clothing went.

Upon seeing the RCMP sidearm, Const. Bajorek demanded where the prisoner had come into possession of it, and he didn't reply. Const. Chau wanted to shoot him in the head but refrained from carrying this out. Again, no verbal reaction was forthcoming, although he looked at the Mountie with a mixture of hatred and loathing for his race.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Kelsey gathered a crew for the BTR  "I need enough crew for the BTR to get her home, a gunner, and a driver at least, and a commander would be good.

She made sure the prisoners were well secured and stowed in the armored belly of the BTR.  "Don't clean it up, they can lay in the blood they helped spill.  They don't need to be comfortable, either."  Though she seems to think just a little better of it, looking for Lee and catching her eyes, to see if she raises objection to that.

"We need to get ready to roll, with two tires on one side of the BTR out, we need to balance it out, take off a bad tire, and pull off one good from the other side on the same axle as the bad one you leave on, and swap it.  I'll give a hand if need.

We need to secure the Hemmet and a quick scavenge the Ammo and KPVs from the cargo truck, Taras, you feel good handling that and providing security for it?  I don't see a point on leaving it behind, especially that ditch witch.  You can check out the HMMWV wreck and see if we bagged a sniper if you have time and inclination, just let me know.

Mahanondi, give me a sitrep on our rescues, what's the story?  We also need to put the big antenna in the air from the LAV and see if we can get anything from the Uni"

Any provisions the OPfor had the hostages can have, Kelsey will have the weapons and ammo secured, for now.  She will offer to transport the people back with the Hemmet if they wish to Vancouver.

The field repair is near top priority, since they have to do it to be able to travel.

"Taras, Andy, see anything I missed?"  She looks between her senior men, waiting for their assessment.  "And Mac, I need details on our wounded, how stable are they, what can we do to help?"

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #153):

"I'll rig the big whip. I don't think we'll get any signal through on UHF because of the mountain in the way. It might work higher on the hill or with Bravo acting as a water relay."

He rigged the Kodiak's antenna on the LAV and started sending. As expected, there was no signal.

"Sorry, Warrant, no dice."

"Pack it in and talk to me about the civvies, do you know them, they speak English, what's the story?  We'll tackle commo after we get the rest sorted out."  She smiles warmly to him and then looks around to check on the progress on the rest.  They had already attracted attention, and that firefight might attract more, she wants to get moving.  Her rifle is slung across her body at ready, and she absently rubs a blood stained hand on a pants leg as she talks.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

"Sure, we speak English! We're very grateful for being rescued, we'll tell you what we can!"

Their story was that they had lived in a small community in South Surrey. They had little contact with others. The community was made of a mixture of Chinese families and an Indian family. Over a dozen masked gunmen had rounded them up 2 days ago during the stormy weather and held them hostage in a shed, probably still in Surrey. They had only been fed only once and hadn't washed. They hadn't been otherwise harmed or molested by the masked guards.

Eventually, someone (Jagelis) came by and explained they would be let go if they performed some physical labour. They agreed. They were taken from the shed during the pre-dawn and put on the HEMMT in the rain. It was a bad sign the guards weren't wearing masks as it meant they likely would be killed. When they arrived in Ioco they were herded into the Grocerateria building and kept under guard. When the explosion came everyone was stunned and Ravi (the boy who met Taras) jumped through the now-opened window. His father tried to follow and was shot.

They were eventually taken out of the store when it caught fire, where they were freed.

Despite Lee's efforts at interrogation, the prisoners refused to talk at all. None possessed documentation or ID.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Kelsey talks to the hostages while most everyone else sets to "I'm Warrant Champlain with the Canadian Armed Forces out of UCB.  We are headed back that way if you want to ride with us.  Glad we got you folks out, they were planning on having you doing something that would have made you very very sick."  She pauses a moment, then smooths on past that  "You can have the bad guy's provisions and rations, and if they don't have any we can see what we have.  We were traveling light, so otherwise you'd have to come back with us for a hot meal.  You can always go free too, but we'll do what we can for Canadian citizens.  I'm sure the RCMP won't mind a statement, either, when we are in a better position to do such things."  She tries to make it sound all business, another day on the beat sort of thing.  Which, in a way, it was.

Kelsey, I suggest to get the LAV to investigate the parking lot area. In particular I want to find a possible KIA or WIA under the tree, a machine gunner. when the scene is clear we can prepare a return convoy.

Kelsey talks to Taras before, or excuses herself from the Hostages for a few moments to talk to Taras.

"You are in charge of it then, Taras.  I need a security detail on this area while we get the BTR ready to roll, and prep the HEMTT.  Clear what you need and get that Quad and it's ammo loaded on the back of the HEMTT.  Work for you?"

Andy held teh line until he was ordered to do anything different by command. Once he was directed to do something else he would do that to the best of his ability.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Sure thing, Kelsey!

Taras organized a search team using the LAV crew and vehicle and the Bravo team element as dismounts. They would slowly approach the tree area looking for the SAW gunner and then swerve North towards the TOW humvee.

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

Under Kel, a team of volunteers (from the ex-hostages) worked to even out the tires on the BTR parked outside the utility building. McRae, Mac and Fox provided area security while Bezhov volunteered to guard the prisoners. The bodies of Delaney and von Stahl were transferred to the BTR. The LAV wasn't big enough to hold any passengers without their bodies being literally underfoot.

Once the HEMMT was prepped and mobile, Taras took it and the majority of the team personnel, along with the LAV. When they surveyed the Deuce it proved non-driveable (with a 25mm AP hole through the engine and 7.62mm hole in the fuel tank) but still repairable, given time and a shop. The quad gun mount was intact and it was a simple matter to winch it along with weapons and spare ammo aboard the flatbed beside the "ditch witch" (Bobcat).

Kelsey moves to get Andy's advice.

"Andy, as a sniper, what is your best advice on dealing with this other sniper?  Should we even try to look for his body?  Anti sniping is not something I was really trained in, my instinct says to let it go rather than even try to verify.  What do you suggest?  Should I send a thief to catch a thief?"

She says this as they prepare to all mount up and roll out, taking anyone who wants to go.  She uses whatever cloth or canvas she can scavenge to cover the dead more respectfully, and has the captives instead strapped down inside the LAV where running won't be so easy for them.

With the civvies help on the BTR to get her balanced out, she rolls the rest of them up to catch up with Taras and they will roll out to check on the burning HMMWV warily, and on the sniper on Andy's advice.  Hopefully they can all roll home.  Considering the wounded, Kelsey decides that setting up shop on the bomb right now is not the best idea.

"Taras, how many of your people can I have and still leave you enough to head back properly?"

Kelsey, just remember that the zodiac needs to be brought back. A single person can do it. The rest is all yours if you need them. I will take the truck and probably take the ZPU in tow.

"He hasn't fired back recently and we have presented him, or her with plenty of targets." Andy replied, "If they are still alive and functioning they have probably gone to ground. If you want me to I'll flush them out but they might be dangerous if hunted. My advice agrees with your instincts, let's get these people somewhere safe and let sleeping dogs or injured snipers lie."

Re: Rad Recce Run Pt. 2

"Thank you Taras and Andy."  She notes as everyone is about ready and starts getting ready to roll.

"Ok everyone, now that we are set to roll.  I want the dismount group and the LAV to sweep the battlefield out.  Crew assignments stay as is. Taras, send a gunner and driver back with your Kodiak.  I'll remain in command of the BTR with Fox as my gunner and Mac as my driver.  We'll carry our casualties, the wounded go with the LAV.  March order is LAV, HEMTT towing the Deuce, BTR on rear guard.  Call signs stay the same.  Questions?"

Before she mounts up she adds

"I know we will want to come back, but we have accomplished our mission and have had casualties.  I think we should withdraw and reform before coming back out, and let the higher ups know what is going on.  After all, we could be back in a few hours if need."
