Re: The Piggy Palace

Kelsey put her lighter back in her pocket and looked around at the men.

"We need to be in contact with the populace, they will tell us more about what is going on than a bunch of driving around can accomplish.  I do wonder what the discipline in the ranks issue is, though.  If we have an issue there, we need to bring it out, Taras."

She taps her fingers on the table and thinks.

"We do have the possibility of using the Hovercraft, but the fuel issue is very on target.  What we really need is a gunboat to operate in the flooded areas, of some sort.  Speed and maneuverablility over armor in this case, I think.  Maybe if we catch our speedboat guys, we will take care of it all in one shot."

Re: The Piggy Palace

I don't like what happened out there today a bit. We were assigned a new commander that was unfit to lead the mission. Seems like he was in need of continuous medical attention whuile we were attacking the enemy. The crew of the LAV didn't say a word about it. Kelsey your failure to communicate properly with the snipers is somehow understandable but you left alone Wayne when my orders were clear to stay low in place. This is a serious breach of discipline towards a superior.

I don't know what's coming next but unless we have a clear set of missions we cannot improvise with the equipment. I want to have options. Reconstruction projects are fine but cannot take preference over our combat operations. Going against the Hell's Angels will be no piece of cake and if we don't have a well disciplined and equipped unit we are not going to win.

Kelsey nods very slowly, her face getting serious.  She sits up and composes herself in strict military posture.

"Staff Sergeant Schevchenko." She says in a very careful even tone.  "You told be that order as we landed from the boat, to fan to the right and stay low, then you advanced past my flank and I ascertained that the snipers had no line of sight on the area you were headed into so I backed you up.  We operated together on the clear and sweep and the rescue.  You gave no further orders and I was handling command and control as best I could considering the situation.  The snipers did have line of sight on Wayne's position and could back him up.  I acted upon the situation on hand and used my best judgement, if you consider what I did to be insubordination, then I recommend you post formal charges against me."

She looks at the former Soviet officer calmly.

"Shall I put myself in hoc now, Staff Sergeant Schevchenko?"

Stone looked annoyed.

"Sergeant, you are mistaken, there was no medical emergency and I did not require constant attention. I did allow Hawke to do some basic treatment, along the lines of a precaution, but it didn't affect my abilities in any way.

"That's what happened, it didn't affect the mission so it wasn't worth mentioning.

"Not then, not now.

"The limiting factor on the LAV was the terrain. Because of that, I couldn't exercise direct command, and therefore allowed you to do so as you had the better position. If you felt that doing so was somehow a mistake, then that is noted, Sergeant.
"

He addressed Andy, "anything I should know about, Master McRae?"

Thinking about the swap of Kodiak vs. Cougar, Belanger left to go make some calls to the Militia.

Taras found him in the radio room, an office that had once belonged to a PE teacher, perhaps.

"What's on your mind? Overall, a good job, today."

"Speaking personally, I don't know if Stone is going to work out. I'm not sure if I buy that he was unfit for command but if he pushes himself this hard until he almost collapses then it could be a bad sign.

Re: The Piggy Palace

"Sir," Andy said to Stone, "if there is an issue here, it's my fault. Kelsey warned us that she might be irrational given what we thought we were going into. Her history and personal preferences give her a strong sense of protectiveness toward other women. I knew that and yet I didn't properly apprise Staff Sergeant Shevchenko about the potential situation. It's been a common problem, Sir, I'm not used to working with Russians and the Soviet leadership system means that the Staff Sergeant doesn't use his senior non-comms as I used to. That's not the Staff Sergeant's fault, it's mine as I'm the one that has perceived the issue."

Andy paused for a moment, "That said, Kelsey's actions were well within the bounds of what I'd expect from an aggressively trained soldier within our Service, Sir. She acted without thought of her own safety to save an innocent life, if she left Wayne a little out on a limb, well, he's a big boy with a gun of his own. I would expect her to chose the safety of a civilian over the safety of a comrade in such a situation. None of us expected the Staff Sergeant to use thermobaric munitions in a police raid so I'd say that improvisation was pretty much the theme of the day, Sir."

He stood a little straighter, "If Kelsey is disciplined over this, I will resign my rank, Sir. That's not a threat, the authorities will do what they have to do, but if she made the mistake on my watch it was my responsibility to pick it up and therefore I deserve to be part of the disciplinary procedures."

Stone yawned mightily, couldn't stop. Finally, he focused on what McRae was saying.

He asked for a few details, then gathered his thoughts.

"Well, Master McRae, you're, ah, not an officer so you can't resign your rank or commission. So you're stuck with it."

Yawning again, he continued. "It's, ah, commendable, and appropriate for you to take a measure of responsibility here. Sergeant, ah, Champlain didn't really do the same far as I could see, but that's neither here nor there, I guess. This didn't seem like a case of Sergeant Champlain acting out of passion, her, ah, actions seem rational enough. But, ah, like you said, in the nature of being aggressive and with initiative. In the end I'll have to rely on Sergeant Shevchenko's, ah, judgement."

"Otherwise, I'll bring that up with, ah, Sergeant Shevchenko. If that's all, ah, I, ah, gotto go pass out. Thanks, Master McRae. If that's all...."

At that point, Stone was yawning uncontrollably.

OOC: Assume that Stone then finds Taras and Belanger, mumbled something incoherent at them, then collapses on the next open bunk (regardless who it belongs to).

Instead of going to his bunk, Hawke headed to the base pharmacy and surrendered his meds box.

"Didn't use anything."  The lock tag was still in place, same number.  He restocked the normal saline, drip kit and catheters in his med bag, and got new seals for that, too.*

His secondary function completed, he headed to the workshop where he could pull apart his weapons and clean them.  When that was done, he grabbed something hot from the commissary/cafeteria, and headed for his locker and bunk for some quiet time.

[*  lock tags are one-way locking tags that are designed to be breakable by intent, but less by accident to keep the high-value meds such as fentanyl or morphine from being stolen or sold by the medics.  We use them on any bag that we inventory, and want to know when someone's gone into it.  Each has a serial number on it.]

Andy will find Kelsey in the female area with her weapon dissasembled, the pieces all over her bunk, with her sitting on one end with a brush and a ragged old t-shirt, cleaning rods, ect.  She has the bolt in her hands and she inspecting it.

"Hey Andy."  She said, smiling briefly to him, she looked at the bolt again, turning it over in her hands. She hadn't even fired her weapon in that action, so it was clean still, just probably got wet during the adventure.  Her HP was on the bed as well, along with the magazines, still dissasembled, it had gotten the worst dunking, and she was letting it air out.

Kelsey sighs and reassembles her HP quickly and drops it in her holster, then her C8.  Sometimes it is the simple actions that your hands do that clears your mind.

She sets her C8 up and goes looking for Taras, with cold beer in hand, one for each of them, and cigarettes.

"Look, Taras, I'm sorry.  We've never really worked before and that whole setup had me almost out of my mind.  My reaction to your criticism was way not called for."

She holds out a cold beer to him, even if he already has one.

"So what can we do to improve things, then?"

Re: The Piggy Palace

The apology is mine, Kel. I don't know yet how many people I killed today...I don't know how many innocents...As an Officer I was trained to preserve the life of my soldiers and I blamed you for leaving Wayne alone instead of praising you for trying to protect me.

He grabbed the cold beer offered and downed a big gulp.

Like they say here, this mission was so closed to become FUBAR. I'm glad that we made it in one piece. We were left alone to deal with it...

I'm afraid things will get more difficult now that the Hell's Angels will start their own moves. We are going to need more troops and more leadership, I'd rather trust you than anything that so far we've been having sent from the Island. Bear with me, sometimes I'm a bitch too. We need some good deserved rest and we will take a look at that Coyote.

Kelsey shakes the hand, then tugs him in for a hug.  Taras might be a little surprised, or a lot, she's so strong that she could be Russian, after all!

"Yeah, that was total FUBAR, and it got bad.  I was running around like an idiot, no planning.  All that smoke, the fire.. the.. screams."

She sighs and sits down, she pops out a smoke and offers him one, and will light one or both.

"I don't advertise this, but when I was in university, this man who felt that women were.. I don't know.. keeping him down somehow.  He stormed the class building I was in, me and my um, I'd like to say fiancee, we were in.  He killed a lot of women that day, including, her.  I was shot too.  They gave me my degree, since I was almost done, and I went home.  I joined the forces not long after that.  I wanted to fight back.  I didn't want to be a victim anymore."

She sighs and finishes the beer, putting her cigarette out in the bottle.

"So anyway, I know I must have been a mess in that op, and I apologize for that.  I can do a lot better, I promise.  If you ever need to talk, you know where I am.  Must be weird for you, being here."  She grins for a moment  "So yeah, I am interested in the Coyote too.  Think it will fill the bill on what we need?"

Re: The Piggy Palace

Following the advice Taras found the dog and she seemed to be very happy with the new found home. Taras was seen playing with Rusalka trying to relax and forget the previous experience.

According to slavic traditions, the rusalki were some sort of mermaids, who lived at the bottom of rivers. In the middle of the night, they would walk out to the bank and dance in meadows. If they saw handsome men, they would fascinate them with songs and dancing, mesmerize them, then lead them away to the river floor to their death. For this time not only they survided the ghost but also recruited her!

The day was coming to an end. Sun down was fast approaching and the team would likely rest and prepare the visit to the new vehicle for the next day.

Re: The Piggy Palace

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg # 326):

A very active day was coming to an end. The dog, Rusalka, proved intelligent and was well-trained, she apparently understood English commands.

The Cougar hadn't shown up at the team's motor pool (the courtyard near the metal shop). Belanger had arranged a trade: the loan of the LAV for the Cougar.

As it was, their instructions from HQ were to hang loose and prepare for further operations in the next day or so. It was clear that something was happening in the upper Fraser Valley, and command needed information on that area as they currently had little accurate intelligence.

The river waters had thankfully crested. Even then, the waters were starting to recede. Flooded areas that were behind dikes, like Port Coquitlam, would actually retain the water that had overtopped the levee and become trapped behind it. Other places were starting to drain, and the rate would accelerate over time.
