13:05, Today: helbent4, on behalf of Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko, rolled 2 using 4d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 7,6,20,2. Construction/AWA check.

Taras' AWA is 8. He rolled a 2 using his Expert level (4d20L) in Construction. That's 6 under the TN of 8 (a "Margin of Success" or "MOS" of 6 is quite good).

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #3):

In this system, lower is always better, so you're rolling to equal or get under a 10.

Kel unfortunately doesn't have any Construction experience and identifying power tools is somewhat a little more specialised. Wayne and Taras do have ample experience, though.

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg #5):

In many cases, this is true (and not unrealistic) unless you're doing something trivial.

In this case, the odds are straightforward. Kel rolls dd20 and takes the highest of the 2, her TN is 10. She has a 50% chance of making a 10 or less on 1 die, so there's a 25% chance of making this on 2 dice.

She has a decent chance because of stats, a lot of folks would have to get under a 5, 6, or even less.  Normal people would be in the 3-4 range or less.

17:27, Today: Andrew Montgomery McRae rolled 2 using 4d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 3,18,16,2. Fieldcraft TN 9 (Assuming no mods).

Assuming no mods that's a success of 7 plus the bonus for a second success. That might be a decent success if there are no particular extra difficulties.

In reply to Andrew Montgomery McRae (msg #8):

Come to think of it, this would be more a Streetcraft roll, with some kind of FIBUA/FISH/CQB Qualification. No matter.

First, he needs to climb down into the house (without falling into the water), then walk across the roof joists (again without falling into the water) to get to the wall before he can work on the loophole.

You got a little ahead of me. I rolled a CDN check to climb down and then walk across the rafters and joists to get into position to start making a loophole.

This process is about a five minute job at least (the nice MOS helped but it's still going to take time to move in and then create the loophole).

Re: Player/GM Die Rolls

I'll need Initiative rolls from Kel and Wayne. Taras doesn't know there's a threat, but probably will, soon!

Initiative is done via a roll (2d20L) vs. OODA. Every point you succeed by is added to your base initiative (Wayne is Lightly Encumbered, so his base is 12, Kel is heavily encumbered so her base is 7). This number (also called "ticks") determines who goes first, and how many actions you receive. Max Initiative/ticks are 15.

Post rolls here, then we'll get to what actions you can perform. Basically, all actions have a tick cost. So, if Wayne's initiative is 14, he can perform 14 Ticks worth of actions. The Speed for an MP5 is 2 Ticks for a quick hip shot (poor accuracy), 3 Ticks for a Snap Shot (regular accuracy) or 5 Ticks  for an Aimed Shot. If Wayne had 14 ticks, he could make 7 hip shots for 14 Ticks (although at full auto he would empty the magazine and probably end up filling the clouds with lead due to recoil). At the other end of the scale, he could take 2 carefully aimed bursts (10 Ticks with 4 remaining) but the time this takes, the tango might fill Kel with lead before he does.

Tick costs are in the main rule book between pages 139 and 142.

Re: Player/GM Die Rolls

Important:

We are starting a new combat turn. Is everyone familiar with the T2013 combat system? First, roll initiative: roll 2d20 (take lowest) and compare to OODA. If you fail your initiative is equal to your Base Initiative (12 for Light Encumbrance, 9 for Moderate Encumbrance, 6 for Heavy Encumbrance). If you succeed, add the difference at 1:1 (this is errata) and the max initiative is 15.

(If you are loaded to your Combat Weight you are Lightly Encumbered, over it's Medium, and so on.)

Your initiative score is also the number of "Ticks" you have to use. Ticks are just like Action Points, it takes 5 to move, 1 to check your surroundings, a variable amount to fire depending on if you're taking a hip shot, snap shot, or aimed shot, etc. Each weapon has it's own costs for the various attack types, based on weight, bulkiness, balance and length. For example, a C8 has a Speed (tick cost) of 3/5/6 for Hip/Snap/Aimed shots. A C3A1 sniper rifle has a Speed of 4/6/9. The Carl Gustav has a Speed of 4/7/10. (I am assuming Andrews is taking Snap shots because at this range, 200m, the Carlie G has no benefit from taking extra time to aim.)

"Snap Shots" are the typical mode of firing, you are actually using the sights and aiming but trying to be efficient with time. "Aiming" is not really that useful at this range; unlike other systems aiming doesn't give you a positive bonus but reduces penalties like range and recoil.

The only visible target is the SAW gunner, but he might drop back down out of sight. The other guy might pop up to take a shot, you don't know.

Your option then is to wait. It's not a hold action as such, but just wastes a few ticks (depending on yourn OODA). It might allow you to be in a position to react more effectively but won't necessarily guarantee you a first shot (say, if the grenadier pops up).

Kel got her shot off and Tony was waiting on me.   Be advised.  The C9 is not the ideal weapon for this scenario. The C9 is not capable of singe shot fire.  Abbot might have gotten a short burst 2 or 3 round instead of the standard 5 or 9. That is up to Tony to make the call. We'll see what plays out.

23:18, Today: Stanley Alistair Abbot rolled 2 using 3d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 2,11,4. Trying for a short burst head shot on 2nd hostage taker.

For that matter, if you want to make 1 shot you can always load a single loose round in the chamber. More will not magically appear if you pull the trigger. With an optical sight, bipod and heavy barrel I think the C9 would be a decent weapon for precision fire (as most such weapons are). Granted to keep shooting you'd need to load the belt and chamber another round, after.

Alternatively, Abbot can also switch to a sidearm.

Abbot can't normally shoot twice in a turn, at any rate.

The new turn starts the tick after you take your shots. I took the liberty of rolling your next turn Initiative.

20:04, Today: helbent4, on behalf of Kelsey Sarah Champlain, rolled 12 using 2d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 12,16. Initiative.
20:03, Today: helbent4, on behalf of Stanley Alistair Abbot, rolled 6 using 2d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 9,6. Initiative.

Both rolls are above your OODA, so you go on base initiative. Kel is 12, Abbot is 9. New turn starts now. Abbot must now spend 4 ticks to get his weapon into action.

Thanks for your patience!

07:54, Today: Kelsey Sarah Champlain rolled 8 using 4d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 15,17,9,8. 2 shots on init target 8 1 of 2.

Kelsey will put one to two more in the hostage holder, will switch target to the next lucky customer if he seems out.
I am assuming she is firing from a prone position
I have enough init left to switch targets to a more immediate threat
I would really like the second shot to be on another person.

My apologies for not being quite as clear as I should have been!

Both targets were hit in the head (aimed shots). They're down, likely dead. The hostages also dropped down, but in order to get out of the line of fire.

There are the 2 new guys coming out the culvert, and 2 guys struggling up the embankment with the sniper, captured gear and weapons.

There are actually three groups in order of relative threat level:

1) Support weapons on top of the southern embankemnt. I would say these are the highest threat.

2) The two guys coming out of the culvert. They don't know where you are, but they have weapons in their hands and can Tyler and Koldan.

3) The two guys struggling to climb up the south bank.

No. They set up a base of fire to cover the others. Post #455, at the end. They never moved.

Kel/Abbot: please better specify your targets, per my groups above. Both hostage takers are down. There are 2 guys to the left, coming out of the culvert. 2 guys to the right, going up the embankment, and 2 guys on top of the embankment who are likely going to open up on you (assuming they see you, not a given due to the smoke screen that was just laid).

Re: Player/GM Die Rolls

OK, I rolled a 1 which is good in the situation.

I'll put my post here. If it's OK, I'll paste it to the thread but 1 might still be a fail so I won't presume success.

Andy lined teh little jeep up so it was facing directly down the slope and then engaged teh four wheel drive and ensured that the free-wheel hubs were engaged. He locked up all the differentials and then selected the low-gear second as it was the best to use of potentially muddy slopes. He made sure his feet were off the pedals to ensure he didn't go instictively messing with the clutch and then let the handbrake go.
As teh Iltis inched down the slope he monitored its progress, gently applying a touch of the brakes if it wenttoo fast and using his steering and a tiny bit of acceleration if he felt the tires lose traction and if any sliding started he steered into the direction of teh slide to keep teh vehicle straight. He was careful to use short taps of the brakes if he needed them at all to avoid cadence locking if it was extremely slippery he would keep brake use to a minimum.

Slowly the vehicle crawled down the slope.

This version is Car Wars 5 from 2002, which simplified the rules for quicker play and modified the scale to better accommodate miniatures. It never took off for a couple reasons and being half-finished is severely hampered by a lack of a Vehicle Design System, standard books of vehicle designs, rules for trucks and motorcycles, etc.

This scenario is "Convoy Escort", taken from the older "Convoy" solo adventure and adapted for CW5 in a quick-and-dirty fashion.

Eric C. Wright rolled 2 using 3d20, keeping the lowest dice only with rolls of 11,2,9.  Fieldcraft roll.

My TN was 9, so the lowest dice (2) gives me 7, +2 for the 9 which is an exceptional success.

MoS 9.

Re: Player/GM Die Rolls

There are 3 patients.

With regards to 1st aid, you get one kick at the can per patient. (You can treat 1 patient per turn.) If you fail or want to get more successes, you can push your character and take
a reroll on any dice that were neither a success nor a 1.

Andrews attempts to aid a patient. His Empathy is C (d8) and Medical Aid is D (d6). He therefore rolls 1d6 and 1d8. Every 6+ is a success.

20:01, Today: helbent4, on behalf of Thomas Matthew Andrews, rolled 3 using 1d6 with rolls of 3.

20:01, Today: helbent4, on behalf of Thomas Matthew Andrews, rolled 3 using 1d8 with rolls of 3.

No successes, but no 1s (critical failures) rolled either. If Andrews wants to push himself with a redoubled effort he can therefore reroll both dice. But with the risk of taking damage or strain for each 1 rolled on the reroll. Will Andrews push himself and make an extra effort?
