Andy settled down in the Itis, it was still a novelty to be able to use a variety of transport to get anywhere. A few years ago it had seemed as if Shank's Pony was going to be the prime form of transport for a long time to come. The authorities had done well to help teh country recover and he was proud to be a part of it.

"Mac," he said, "keep your eyes and insticts peeled. If your guts ping ambush we'll stop and see if the place is suitable for a counter ambush."

Kelsey motion Abbot over to the map she has spread out on the hood of the HMMWV  "Comon Abbot, I'm looking at running the main road, essentially, and counting on radio to coordinate.  But if you have any ideas, please jump in with it."

She traces a route straight down the trans canada highway to their destination.

"We have a few likely addresses from the phone book to check, but my money is on asking locals.  Remember folks, this is supposed to be friendly territory, our people, if out of touch.  We need to be perceived as thinking that, but we will also be wary."

Abbot moved in and took a good look at the map.

"I understand the point of running the Trans-Can.  Flying the flag, so to speak.  If we're expecting any trouble we might want to make a couple of detours and return by a different route. So that we don't run through an ambush. I suppose the rally points can be the the last major intersection that we passed.  Worst case can be an E&E back to here. It's not that far to hike back.", Abbot said with a somewhat serious tone to his voice.

"You're right about the phone book.  The addresses will give us a starting point, but the names will be more useful.  With so many people being displaced, an address won't always work out.  People might remember names tough.  Especially when your new doctor doesn't care if you have two legs or four.", Abbot said simply.

Thomas stood during the briefing and made some notes off the map. He did'nt really have anything to add as they were quite some way from the small island he had come to call home.

Once he had a better idea of what they were up to and where they were going he made his way over to his ride and began getting to know the vehicle as well as putting his gear inside.

Taras looked at the route.

"Yes, if there is someone hostile about, you will draw their fire. I will take the supporting KNIGHT detachment north of the freeway along 88 Ave/River Road, then down 264 St. / County Line Rd. This will put on the flank of any ambush of the freeway but we will not be able to provide direct fire support for most of your route short of that point.

"Master McRae, you may travel along with KNIGHT (the Cougar), or with Kelsey's detachment, BISHOP, in the Humvee. Or go your own way, perhaps to the south of the freeway on a third parallel course. You will be ROOK, of course.

"Checkpoints are as follows for BISHOP: January is at the 232 St onramp where you enter the freeway, then March is the Highway 13 offramp where you will get off the freeway to travel South to the game farm. February is midway between them where 284 St crosses. The objective is April. The fort, of course, is May, and this will be our main fall back point.

"For the KNIGHT detachment our main checkpoint will be where we turn from River Rd. onto 264 St. We will run ahead of BISHOP, either try to establish if checkpoint March is clear and get into position to cover it."

Re: Goin' on a Safari

Abbot watched and listened as Taras laid down the plan for the routes, checkpoints and fallback positions.  The plan and tactics behind it seemed sound so he kept his mouth shut.  When the session was over, he went to load his gear into the HMMWV.

Abbot collected all of his gear that was piled up in the parking lot.  He opened a new can of 5.56mm linked ammo and took out a ammo drum for his C9. Then he tossed his the ammo can and his pack into the cargo area.

The extra ammo drum was slung over the seat-back in front of his position by it's web strap, ready to grab quickly if needed. His C9 rested in his seat until they loaded up. He then went to find the rest of his vehicles crew to see if anyone needed assistance before the team moved out.

OOC -  I found a cool link for CF small arms ammo.  Gives specs for the ammo and packaging. I know that the 62 grain round wasn't fielded for the 5.56mm yet in game time.

Kesley does last checks and rounds, making sure everyone is good, then moves to take her position in the HMMWV hatch.

"Well enough, the Van Doo can handle the heavy then boys."  She racks her C8 as close to her as she can, and starts checking over and loading the 249.  "Unless we have a contradiction, roll hot, safe on."

"Right, you haven't had the briefing on how we normally roll.  No worries.  normally we don't have a round chambered, but this situation is looking tense.  Around a lot of civies we will usually drop to no round chambered, weapons loaded."

Re: Goin' on a Safari

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg # 816):

Taras followed up on Kel's outlining the ROEs.

"Sergeant, I will leave it up to you to decide if the dismount elements will have a round chambered in small arms, considering the intel we've gotten there are possible unfriendlies about. The SAW belonging to Cpl. Abbot, the Cougar's guns, and the Humvee's machinegun will stay loaded and instantly ready to fire, per usual.

"Bikers I am not so much worried, they have been careful to not defy the law where we could do something about it. They are just criminals, for now, and we can deal with them under the normal rule of law, for now. But if there are mercenaries these "armed combatants" are a real threat to peace, as they will likely have military grade weapons. So the restrictions on force in the ROEs do not necessarily apply. It is up to you to decide if you encounter someone with an RPG to engage, disarm them and confiscate it, or ignore it.

"Always remember your "Rights To Engage". This is not UN, no permission to engage is needed if creditable threat is being perceived.

"Sorry to take up time. Remember, if all else fails, our ultimate rally point is "May Day", here at the fort. Should be easy to remember."

She laughs at that as she settles into the shotgun seat and puts the headset on her, the radio set on the wide HMMWV hump forward.  She has one to do inter vehicle comms and monitor the team frequency, one for her scanning.  She hands out headsets to everyone, showing them how to trip the microphone if need.

"And to boast to a Van Doo means you want a competition later, Oui?"

Re: Goin' on a Safari

With about a half hour of loading, briefing and organising, the different detachments were on their way to departing.

Performing the regular radio check with HQ (their advanced base in Burnaby) Mac noted that it was difficult to get a response. This was due increased interference on the long-range radio net, which used an analog signal due to the mixture of old and new sets that comprised the mishmash of operating stations in the Lower Mainland and South Island. The team's short-range net seemed unaffected.

Soon, they were leaving MAY DAY (the Hudson's Bay fort) towards JANUARY, the checkpoint at the entrance to the Freeway, designated MSR Tango Charlie. There, KNIGHT would turn left and head down River road (ASR Romeo) parallel to MSR Tango Charlie (the Trans-Canada). BISHOP would continue down the freeway to checkpoint MARCH and then APRIL.
