He closely inspects the M240 for any obvious issues and performs a function check. He then loads the weapon, waiting to chamber a round until they roll out.

"Ah, that is certainly a challenge, Corporal.  I feel a wager coming on.  Should I mention I was the DM for my section, or not?  Oops, just did." She laughs.

Designated Marksman, whether true or not her dress uniform would be the place she wore that badge.  Maybe a little psyche out on her end too, if she was a DM, she'd certainly be an expert shot.  The Canadian Forces liked to embed snipers with units, people that got extra training in fieldcraft and marksmanship that have shown aptitude.  The 22e did this on a section level, filling the ranks with expert marksmen that used automatic weapons instead of sniper weapons.

There was a pro and a con to the idea the Sergeant was a DM.  Pro:  As signaler she was in a bit of a support role within her team to begin with, making it easy for her to slip into another supporting role, like team sniper.  The Con was.. what would a DM be doing with a damn C8 Carbine?  Unless it might be one with tighter than normal rifling?

Regardless, the Royal 22e was well known to have hard nosed and skilled fighters, and she was no young girl, or shrinking flower.

The M240 was "skookum", a common if slightly archaic western term borrowed from Chinook that had come to mean "good". The cupola swung freely in the mount.

Seeing Andrews load the CG with an HE round, Tremblay makes sure the 2-round plastic carry case with HEAT is ready if he needed to bail. "If you don't mind, I'll schlep the HEAT rounds, let me know if you prefer if you want me to take the HE instead, they're in the back. I can take both spare cases but it'll slow me down. A lot." The carry case was on the floor with his C7A1.

"You know, I got me ahold of one of them ERYX launchers, like the Canucks use. Nice bit of gear, kind of short range, though, compared to the Javelin. But it's SACLOS so you can aim it after you fire it."

"We should be good with the HEAT, lets just hope we won't need them. You guys still run into many armoured columns ?"

He said it with a smile but having been on the sharp end of one he knew they where not funny.

In answer to Andrews' question, he replied, "some technicals and APCs. Seems it's mercenaries that are the heaviest armed, we brought a couple friends of Taras aboard. One had a "Gecko", a mobile SAM launcher, plus his crew. Defected from the Soviet loyalists up in Bella Coola. The other had a platoon, plus a BTR-70 and BMP-2. They've been split up now but for the longest time they were the only armour we had, aside from a LAV III the local militia force is borrowing in exchange for the Cougar."

"When Mac did some recce a month back of the "Free Market" on Annacis Island, he saw an HA in a V-100, an Air Force security vehicle that was probably once out at the airport. Got some nice pictures of an HA inside it."





"We don't know where it is now. The market got flooded out when the river rose and the levee broke. I would imagine they still got it. Plus, we heard the HAs can get ahold of tanks. Things are starting to go down the shitter now for the US military units that are still renegade so I could imagine you can buy anything. If you have the gold or drugs. The HAs have both and until the market went under they were doing a banner business in at least the small arms trade from across the border. That's one of the reasons their clubhouse is out here, it's close to the old Truck Crossing of the US-Canadian border. We need to exert control to stop the flow of guns, weapons and drugs either way."

Being a US Marine, the idea of his fellow US soldiers selling off their weapons for drugs and gold seemed to really irk him.

Andy smiled at the friendly rivalry over marksmanship. The banter was good for morale and anything that encouraged the troops to become better shots was a bonus.

Before they set off, he said, "If you kids want to have a shooting contest, we can throw in a familiarisastion course on the Barrett as a prize."

"Ha ha! Be the first on your block!"

He closed the door as the vehicle began to get underway.

"Might be fun to play with the toy, but this girl likes her rock and roll.  Speaking of which, when I want a ground force it is everyone not on drive or turret.  I'll lead it the ground pounders, at that point Corporal you will have command of the vehicle.  Now, let's rock and roll."

She keys the radio "Knight, you have first move."

"Roger that, Sergeant. I have vehicle command after dismount deployment."

"Roger. Be advised, schedule as follows: time is now 1430 hours. Bishop/Rook's course is 13 kilometres: 3 to January, 5 to February, 5 to March and another 1 to April. Travelling at 20 km per hour you should reach January in 9 minutes, February in 15 minutes, March in 15 after that and April (the objective) 3 minutes later. Knight will be travelling faster and will reach March (the offramp) about 9 minutes prior to you, coming from north."

The vehicles moved out of the fort. Immediately, the Cougar turned onto River Road, circling around to the north.

Bishop/Rook continued to January, the on-ramp for the Trans-Canada, and made it on schedule. They were taking it very slowly, travelling on average 20km/h, moving under cover (where possible) and allowing Rook to deploy every once in a while to cover them with long-range sniper fire.

Once on the Trans-Canada, cover was hard to find. It had been a tree-lined 4-lane divided highway through flat terrain. A number of abandoned vehicles littered the roadside, remnants from the evacuation in late '97 and early '98, where they had mechanical failures or ran out of fuel. The trees on either side and middle were encroaching on the roadway now, and provided some cover (or at least shadowy areas).

"Good call Keith, and I have the radio scanning.  Antennas up for better reception."  She smiled a moment, thinking about those big antenna wagging in the wind, and hoping they didn't beat her gunner to death.  She pulls her C8 out of the rifle rack and rests it in the passenger window instead, watching the front right as close as she could while keeping attention on the radio.  Luckily, she could set it to scan by itself and it wouldn't ask for much attention... unless it caught something, then her attention would be on that and not looking.

They began cautiously moving down the freeway, moving out from checkpoint January. Kel checked in with Knight, and the signal was clear. But she couldn't check in with HQ on the long-range net.

After a short pause Knight returned to the channel.

"Have contacted Hotel (Belanger) on command net. Advised that Hotel is investigating. Believes interference coming from outside city. Agreed, could be an "Enemy Force" outside the Lower Mainland. Local tactical nets are unaffected. Hotel is aborting current mission and will remain in area to provide support as needed. Will be standing by, current location is within five kilometres.

"Have also been advised that local sources warn of elevated levels of Bravo (biker) activity, nothing specific, and this is about what we have already heard."

"Understood? Please confirm."

Belanger had visited them about a half-hour before, picking up Sheeler and Droz while dropping off Abbott. He also had the marine sniper, Gunny Conklin with him. It wasn't much but if they had trouble contacting the reaction force in New West for assistance it was better than nothing. Besides, at least Belanger and company was in the immediate area, which meant that whatever support they could provide would come a lot quicker than heavier backup that was 25km or so away.

Andy kept his rifle ready and scanned the area for thrests. As they got closer to their destination he also kept a lookout for a position that the enemy might use to ambush them on the way back.

Mac was also scanning his surroundings constantly.

Kelsey listened and checked her map, then keyed back in.

"Someone is stepping on the long range net, but not on our channel hopping digital tacnet.  It has gotten worse lately, which may signify a step up of hostility or a new player.
Hotel is standing by nearby on tacnet, making it possible to call help if need. Confirm that the Hotel Alphas are getting busier, our risk profile is increased.  This makes this little foray useful as scouting in the form of another mission more useful, and more dangerous.  Shall I up our threat level?  I propose we jump in stages of buddy cover, buddy move?"

Classic maneuver for infantry, only one person moved at at time, the other covering.  Likely she is proposing that her team holds a position, deploys infantry, waits for the rear element to catch up, deploy, then they leap forward again.  Taras could add to it if he wished on a crossroad as well.

Abbot, hearing about confirmed threat activity, sat a little lower behind the steel plating of the cupola. He continued to scan the area ahead of them, mainly covering the front 180 arc, trusting the Rook to watch their back. He used his binoculars (compact mag-1) to more carefully check out possible ambush points like overpasses and empty buildings or tree lines within 50 meters of the road.

"You probably heard gentlemen.  You will need to be ready to dismount frequently.  Hawke, push the red button on the top radio to hold on a scanned conversation.  Take notes on the bad if you can, I'll be leaving it when I dismount.  Every time we stop, we dismount, deploy on your side of the vehicle, pick your own position."
