Re: Safari II
Andrews crossed first, then covered Tremblay's bound.
They were at the hedge on the north side of 56 ave at the corner of 248 and 56. Separating the street from hedge was a shallow, overgrown ditch. Behind the hedge a little to their west seemed to be a detached garage and then house, set back from the road.
In the ditch by the corner was an area of beaten down grass, with pooled blood. A blood trail led a few steps west, past a bullet-riddled speed limit sign (MAXIMUM 50 km/h), then turned up the closest driveway.
Back at the Cougar, Darek and Wayne deposited their comrade at Hawke's impromptu 1st aid station. Gunny Conklin, the US Marine sniper, had shrapnel wounds through all limbs and seemed to be suffering from a concussion. Obviously, he'd been a little too close to the T-54's 100mm HE shell when it detonated behind him. His body armour largely protected his internal organs as it was meant to, but he was missing an ear. As he had been beating feet when the shell hit, his face was turned away from the blast, sparing his eyes, nose and mouth.
"...is Castle! Say again, does anyone read me?
"Be advised we are fucking pinned down about 75 metres west, correction, east of 248 st in the stream bed, danger close, say again, danger close!"
There was a pause in transmission, and they could hear the almost continuous back and forth crack and popping of M16 and AK fire echoing between the trees and banks of the streambed. The source of the gunfire was located about 200m SSE of their position, but obscured due to the woods. There was the long ripping bursts of fire from what was likely a SAW of some kind, probably an RPK74. But whoever it was, it sounded like they were all almost on top of each other. Then they heard the BOOM of a grenade, followed by another.
"Goddamn it, we are getting lit up here, and are almost out of ammunition. We are going to get...."
A very loud report echoed through the woods, seemingly ending the transmission.
