Andy started to look around, "Mac," he asked, "do you see a good spot for us to set up?"

He kept looking for a decent place to set up his binome.

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg # 168):

Pulling the 2 cases holding Carl Gustav rounds behind him, Tremblay got ready dismounted.

"Sergeant! I don't mean to disagree, but we're a thousand metres from our objective. It's going to be all over by the time we get there on foot!

"But if you want, I can man the gun while you advance."

Re: Safari II

As the Iltis turned, Mac and Andy caught a glimpse of the intersection in the direction of the tank. There was an explosion of sparks trailing white smoke, someone had obviously just lit off a White Phosphor grenade in the middle of the intersection. The tank and vehicles were instantly obscured by a cloud of smoke.

The vehicles turned down a long paved driveway, as it was the closest entrance through the screen of trees and the hedgerow. To the immediate left of the driveway were a couple of small buildings (house, detached garage) behind a split-rail fence, in front down the end of the driveway disappeared behind some trees, to the right of the driveway were more trees. Due to the trees, they were out of sight of the tank (which was obscured behind a cloud of WP smoke) for the moment.

There was no answer on the radio at that time.

Re: Safari II

There are certain preparatory rituals associated with smoking, and chief among those is packing . This was accomplished by Taras by inverting the unopened pack and rapping it smartly, three times in his orthodox fashion, usually against his palm. A move also known as "spanking the camel". This helped to condense the loose tobacco so that it's a little tighter in the paper, something quite usual in the current times of reduced quality control during World War III. It also make the ciggy burns a little smoother, and lasts longer. Nothing wrong with that.

At this point, many people, Taras included, would have removed the first cigarette, invert it so the tobacco side is up, and then replace it in the package. For some, this is for good luck. For others it's just a ritual that they may have learned from another smoker. In any case, the lucky cigarette is the last one smoked. More so in the presence of a main battle tank with more than dubious intentions. When one had emerged far enough to take up with the fingers, the Ukrainian didn't do so. There is a significant degree of coolness imparted when one removes the emerging cigarette with teeth and lips, rather than fingers. Soon enough the cigarette was lit.

Another smoke, deadlier perhaps on the industrial scale, was covering the troubled intersection. Well played. I don't see you, you don't see me. thought the ex Read Army Officer.

Still amazed by the team's drill quick reaction time he decided that it was also time to do something. Now that the smoke was leveling the game for both sides.

Wayne, lets get moving! Two more blocks and get under cover again! While the driver would be revving up the Cummings provided horsepower he told to his Polish turret mate: Get ready to put a round down the road at my command.

There was a clanging sound from inside the turret as Darek cleared the breech. He reloaded, then closed the breech block and settled into the gunner's seat.

Re: Safari II

The radio set to Hotel's channel crackled.

"Hotel, Knight, this is Castle.  Be advised approximately one-five reinforcements have arrived from south on two-four-eight with two more technicals and a Victor-one-zero-zero.  Hotel, orders?  Over."

It sounded like Tyler! The young paratrooper had been posing as a bodyguard for the Russian pilot, Koldan, as they tried to infiltrate HA circles undercover as arms dealers.

Roger that Castle. We are closing in from the East. Over.

After the radio transmission was acknowledged it was time to focus on the main target. Being outside the turret offered a better situational awareness than the buttoned-up polish fellow. While Darek would be cooking a HESH recipe for a soviet fondue, the Ukrainian was aiming the C-6 on the intersection.

After the WP smoke went off, there was a crescendo of pops and bangs (explosions and gunfire) from the intersection, perhaps giving a clue as to why Hotel was too busy to answer.

But there was an answer from someone else. "Knight from Hotel two. Read you Lima Charlie. Thought it might be Tango and Cash there! Break.

"All units, be advised Hotel element is pinned down in, ah, small structure on Sierra Echo corner of Five Six and Two Four Eight. Have lost contact with Hotel but they're still firing, assume comms failure. Ah, there's a Hotel Alpha element with one Tango Five Fower. Popped a Willie Pete and am keeping the Fife Fower buttoned up, am displace..."

The transmission ended abruptly in a crescendo of MG fire, punctuated by a massive explosion as the tank fired a 100mm HE shell at something located at point blank range. Due to the smoke, what or where was obscured.

Re: Safari II

The initial flash and subsequent deafining loud bang was totally unexpected:

святейшее дерьмо!!! (Holy shit!)

The T-54 appeared to have recklessly shot at one of the buildings of the intersection at extremely close distance. The over pressure caused by the firing of the main gun clearing initially the WP smoke only to immediately replace it with that of the propellant coming from the mouth of the barrel. The intensity of the fireball was also outstanding.

Closer now, the Main Battle Tank profile was easy to distinguish. The thundering explosion still echoing in the nearby structures:

Wayne stop! Darek engage!

By the time that the initial cloud of white phosphorus had almost cleared and the T-54 had fired, the Cougar vehicle got closer to the 60th. From this distance and taking advantage of the posture of the target as well as the element of surprise, Taras was hoping to get a good shot across the bow the tank. While Darek would be aiming the main gun he would be aiming the machine gun for any target of opportunity at "Alamo Junction".

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg # 187):

Because everyone in this part of Aldergrove seemed to want a high hedge, there were no good hull down positions. Either you were in the roadway, or blocked by someone's hedge, bushes or trees. Mowing down someone's overgrown hedge, Wayne pulled into someone's yard. The gun tube stuck out over the hedge on that side. It was concealment, not cover.

Kelsey hears the transmission that Hotel is pinned down and sees the WP go up.

"Ok folks, let's catch a ride with the Hummer a little closer and rescue Hotel"

She keys her radio as she jogs back to the HMMWV.  "This is Bishop one.  Lima Charlie on the Willie Pete, advancing on diagonal!"

She will climb back in her seat and pull out her map, checking the location marked as everyone loads up.

"Hawke, bring it as close as you dare... anyone got some rockets?  We got a T-54 out there, our handheld stuff can take that tank out, no problem!"
