Re: Safari II
There are certain preparatory rituals associated with smoking, and chief among those is packing . This was accomplished by Taras by inverting the unopened pack and rapping it smartly, three times in his orthodox fashion, usually against his palm. A move also known as "spanking the camel". This helped to condense the loose tobacco so that it's a little tighter in the paper, something quite usual in the current times of reduced quality control during World War III. It also make the ciggy burns a little smoother, and lasts longer. Nothing wrong with that.
At this point, many people, Taras included, would have removed the first cigarette, invert it so the tobacco side is up, and then replace it in the package. For some, this is for good luck. For others it's just a ritual that they may have learned from another smoker. In any case, the lucky cigarette is the last one smoked. More so in the presence of a main battle tank with more than dubious intentions. When one had emerged far enough to take up with the fingers, the Ukrainian didn't do so. There is a significant degree of coolness imparted when one removes the emerging cigarette with teeth and lips, rather than fingers. Soon enough the cigarette was lit.
Another smoke, deadlier perhaps on the industrial scale, was covering the troubled intersection. Well played. I don't see you, you don't see me. thought the ex Read Army Officer.
Still amazed by the team's drill quick reaction time he decided that it was also time to do something. Now that the smoke was leveling the game for both sides.
Wayne, lets get moving! Two more blocks and get under cover again! While the driver would be revving up the Cummings provided horsepower he told to his Polish turret mate: Get ready to put a round down the road at my command.
