Re: OOC4

In reply to William Hawke (msg # 222):

I have a friend who served in M48s, M60s and M1s so I'll ask him. Some tanks have a floor hatch, probably for this reason or to exit under fire. Vehicles like LAVs and M113s have hatches on the deck and rear and it would take a lot to flip one in a way that all egress is completely blocked, although you might need to crawl.

From some message board:

quote:
The question brought back a memory. I was the first M1 driver to take one across a pontoon bridge (or so they told me). The lack of an escape hatch did occur to me, but being a young, naive and immortal, I wasn't really worried until they made the rest of the crew dismount, and then I saw the divers, the helos, the engineers, and the cameras, and assorted high ranking brass.

Then it was a bit of a wtf  moment.

I guess I should be flattered that they trusted my HSLD driving skillz.

fwiw- the M60 did have a hatch.

quote:
An Abrams crew died in the invasion of Iraq after their tank went into a river or canal. I can't recall all the details, but I believe it was a Marine crew. The tank landed in such a way that none of the hatches could be opened so the lack of a belly hatch probably played a role.

This was the Euphrates river.

As everyone can appreciate, a rollover is always serious business. A CF Colonel was recently killed during a Brigade-level training exercise when his LAV flipped during off-road manoeuvres:

M113's have a big rear door as well as top hatches.  Your average battletank is top only, but I really don't know them well.  All the APC styles have a big rear door that can lower for troop ingress, egress, such as the Bradley, 113, etc.

Oh and the idea of dismount is to provide security and limit losses if there is a vehicle accident, assuming we have time for it.

Re: OOC4

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg # 227):

Sounds groovy. If we're going by marching order, the V-100 is next?

A friend of mine is in the process of wrapping up a Lord of the Rings game (Decypher edition). We had a main PC drop (a Dunedin Lord) and he'd like to know if anyone would like to pick him up, or start a new PC. We're going into the home stretch but it won't be a piece of cake!

If pitching a new PC be advised that this is a pretty low-powered game set prior to the Battle of the Five Armies (aka "The Hobbit"). PCs will likely be Men, Dwarfs or Hobbits. Definitely not intimate bosom buddies with anyone of note in Middle Earth (save that for the fanfic). Elves are more vague rumour than fact. The location is Eriador so natives or someone with a really good reason to be there works best. Like, inhabitants of the Shire and Bree, maybe a Lakeman or Barding, Beorning or Woodman. RTJ:

Bummer Tony, I haven't picked up the LoTR rpg for over a decade, though I still have my (probably outdated) copy.

Now L5R, or Morrow 4th ed.... I am in (I am working my way through reading 4th ed)

There's a new one out... The One Ring from Cubical 7 (2011) as well. Quite interesting approach.

I ran a One Ring adventure for my cousins at camp last year, I quite enjoyed it. Unlike LotR it's a purpose-made system so it has some kind game-specific touches.

Where is HOTEL from my position?  If he's unstable at this point, perhaps I can do something about that.

I think HOTEL is in the back of the Cougar. He seems to be stable. Several of the prisoners are in the rear of the humvee.

Can you make a drive check? 2d20, take the lowest. Post to the die roll thread? Thanks!

Re: OOC4

Hello Team,

Does the fort have electricity? There's a generator, which you may or may not know a bout, plus solar panels. (The latter wasn't specified because I am making this up as I go along, but there is plenty of scavenged materials, especially with relation to the greenhouses "Old willie" has constructed. Even if nothing else, it would be somewhat unusual this close to sunset for there to be no lights whatsoever, be it candle or lantern, but again you aren't familiar with Old Willie's habits.

Re: OOC4

They may have a Quaker or Amish type of approach to things after all! Even Doukhobors. According to wiki: "Today an estimated 20,000–40,000 people of Doukhobor heritage live in Canada, some 4,000 of them claiming "Doukhobor" as their religious affiliation."

Just brushing up on the "Douks". Fascinating stuff. The were a sect of fundamentalist Russian Orthodox dissenters who fled Tsarists persecution en masse at the turn of the 20th century. Probably some remain and have likely recreated their communal lifestyle.

GURPS post apocalypse game needs players!

Join the inhabitants on the tiny US Navy outpost of San Nicholas Island as they try to rescue survivors from the greater Los Angeles area and rebuild in the aftermath of a global viral outbreak.

We currently have 3 PCs with room for 3 possibly 4. If you want to jump right in, you can be one of the sailors stationed on the island.  If you want to be a civilian survivor, you may have to wait a bit.
