In reply to William Hawke (msg # 222):
I have a friend who served in M48s, M60s and M1s so I'll ask him. Some tanks have a floor hatch, probably for this reason or to exit under fire. Vehicles like LAVs and M113s have hatches on the deck and rear and it would take a lot to flip one in a way that all egress is completely blocked, although you might need to crawl.
From some message board:

The question brought back a memory. I was the first M1 driver to take one across a pontoon bridge (or so they told me). The lack of an escape hatch did occur to me, but being a young, naive and immortal, I wasn't really worried until they made the rest of the crew dismount, and then I saw the divers, the helos, the engineers, and the cameras, and assorted high ranking brass.
Then it was a bit of a wtf moment.
I guess I should be flattered that they trusted my HSLD driving skillz.
fwiw- the M60 did have a hatch.

An Abrams crew died in the invasion of Iraq after their tank went into a river or canal. I can't recall all the details, but I believe it was a Marine crew. The tank landed in such a way that none of the hatches could be opened so the lack of a belly hatch probably played a role.
This was the Euphrates river.
As everyone can appreciate, a rollover is always serious business. A CF Colonel was recently killed during a Brigade-level training exercise when his LAV flipped during off-road manoeuvres:
