That's the whole point. If it's not part of the plotline I'm not interested.

In reply to Kelsey Sarah Champlain (msg # 126):

The V-100's winch is long gone. The Cougar doesn't seem to have its self-recovery winch anymore. The Dodge Challenger is a muscle car.

Your stuck Humvee has a winch, but it's in the septic tank. Probably the captured Humvee has a winch. The T-54 likely has a tow chain.

Following is an interesting what-if vehicle. At the time Canada was evaluating the MOWAG Piranha, they were also evaluating the V-150 for the same or similar roles: APC, Fire Support/Recce, recovery. The V-150 has a higher VC turret ring with extra periscopes and smoke dischargers moved from sides to rear. This vehicle is on display in CFB Borden, Manitoba.

Geeze our HMMWV has a winch?  It can pull itself out then, if we can put a fulcrum behind it.  Might be easier to check the other HMMWV for a winch though.

The winch is in the front, which is down in the collapsed tank. But I guess I could see that?

Re: OOC4

Sure Tony, I am positive that if we were to try to self recover with that HMMWV it would take a lot of effort and time regardless.

Using another vehicle to pull it out is much more expedient.

Very interesting proto, Tony. Thank you for sharing.

I'm glad that the CF went the MOWAG way. Just look at the succesful history of the LAV-III and the repercussions in the US Army all the way to baptizing a brigade concept!

Especially a tank to pull! Just sayin'.

Javier, I remember seeing the picture of the V-150 at Borden and wondering how it got there!

Yeah, the LAV III has and will continue to be an effective vehicle. As well, I don't know if those would have been manufactured here, which has been an incredible boon to Canada with regards to the LAV. But I hear Canada is buying the grandchild of the V-150, the Guardian, so it all somehow comes around.

Note: I'm gonna be off gaming at our local convention for the rest of the weekend, not that I tend to post much anyways. I'll check back but please remind me if I miss any posts or anything during the week.

Re: OOC4

The 6x6  Mowag Piranha I was chosen as the basis for a new family of  CF wheeled armoured vehicles in 1977. Licenced production was undertaken by GM Canada's Diesel Division of London, Ontario between 1979 and 1982 as the AVGP family. So it would be quite believable that any other winner would be also lincensed build in country. Three types were built: The Grizzly infantry section carrier or APC (269 built),the Cougar tank trainers (195 built), and Husky repair / recovery vehicles (27 built). Cadillac-Gage submitted their V-150 as a recce vehicle. Also, for the AVGP contest, the V-150 competed with the Brazilian Engesa EE-11 "Urutu", the Frenchies Berliet VXB, Panhard M4 and Saviem VAB, and of course the winner: Mowag Piranha I.

Looking at the entries one can imagine how fortunate the decision was.

The ultra modern rendition of the V-150 is known as the TAPV (Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle) in canadian parlance. The TAPV will fulfill a variety of roles such as reconnaissance and surveillance, security, command and control, cargo and armoured personnel carrier. The TAPV will replace the Armoured Patrol Vehicle (RG-31), some of the Coyote reconnaissance vehicle (LAV 2) and will complement the Light Utility Vehicle Wheeled (G-Wagon). First deliveries are expected this year. Total numbers could go up to 500. It was tested in October last year:

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg # 133):

Certainly some nice pictures.

Probably a V-150 would have been manufactured in Canada, and that certainly would have been desirable from Canada's point of view, but it may not.

At any rate, I've closed off the April Fools thread. I enjoyed that and everyone who participated, you have my deep thanks and I hope you enjoyed it as well. Now, back to your scheduled programming.

From here on out, everyone please post in the "Over the Fence" thread. Thanks!

Talking about licenses:

Western Star, then of Canada, produced a licensed version of the VM90 for the Canadian Forces during the 1990s called the LSVW.

I think it's possible the Western Star plant that was in Kelowna would still be able to produce vehicles, given the resources. Although, the LSVW had an atrocious reputation!

Re: OOC4

In 2002, Western Star production was moved to a plant in Portland, Oregon. All Western Star trucks are manufactured in the Portland, Oregon Truck Plant. Curiosly, current ownership belongs to Daimler AG.

The Iveco VM-90 is also licensed in Egypt and China.

The LSVW is unpopular. It has been criticized for poor handling, top-heaviness,
unreliable brakes and transmission, and awkward engine access amongst other
things. However, much of the difficulty resulted from the original specifications.
The Department emphasized fuel efficiency and low purchase price when they
were looking for a new light support truck. That is what it got – a vehicle with top
speeds of 25 km/h off-road and only 90km/h on pavement.
Neither the small engine (only 115 hp despite turbo-charging) nor the weak
automatic transmission is adequate for tough military operational support duties.
The transmission occasionally pops out of gear under stress. Fading breaks and
rust have shown up far too early in the lives of these vehicles.
In the end the Canadian Forces got what they paid for –

Tendering is a deeply flawed method of military procurement and inevitably you do get what you pay for especially when civilian government always go for the cheapest tender.

Hello,

I would guess the RV point is the market, as that's where the Reaction Force was told to go and the wounded can't be easily moved.

Hi team,

This particular campaign is somewhat winding down. Javier's been pushing me to take a road trip and check out some interesting sites here in the Lower Mainland. I think that's going to happen, and when that does, well, I'll have no choice but to continue the game! Oh, we might take another short break, but I think continuing will happen sooner rather than later.

Even with the Iltis do we have enough room?

Or might it better to use what we have mobile, GET mobile and wait on reinforcements to recover the Hummer?
