Re: Unauthorised Entry

In reply to Taras Vladimirovich Shevchenko (msg # 354):

The radar tower didn't look like a military installation. For one, it was rather small and dark coloured but not camouflaged.

There was also some rust streaks and it looked like the dome might have some holes in it. Some small-calibre bullet holes but a some 20mm autocannon hits as well.

"Thanks, Wayne."

Mac took the instrument and loped off, keeping an eye on the reading as he advanced on the tower.

Kelsey dismounted and scanned the "woodline", not where Mac was heading, but anyone that might be watching, over the sights of her carbine.

Thomas had got out of the vehicle once they had decided to stop, he provided security as they searched the area. Walking over towards the barricade he checked to see if it had been moved recently or if anyone had taken the time to booby trap it.

He then lets his carbine drop on its sling as he scans down the road and along each verge with his field glasses.

In reply to Christopher Little Hawk MacDonald (msg # 358):

Mac was stopped by the rolls of shiny razor wire that was laid behind the barricade. It stretched from one side to the other.

He could try to go over or through it. To the left was a ditch, past a thick wall of trees and bushes and the roll was anchored somewhere in there. The right side was anchored to a fence. Past that was a farmhouse underneath overarching trees.

Re: Unauthorised Entry

Muttering something about the sheer blasphemy of cluttering the place up with razor wire, Mac inspected where it was attached to the fence on the right side. Perhaps if he shinned over the fence and then back on the other side of where the razor wire was attached...

He glanced over at the farmhouse, looking for any signs of habitation.

In reply to Christopher Little Hawk MacDonald (msg # 362):

There was a car-sized gate, open, a few metres back in the fence. The farm house itself looked abandoned. Fallen branches, needles and leaves littered the area in front of the house in a thick carpet.

The gate will do, then. And if the farmhouse is unswept, the less likely an angry farmer will pop out and take pot-shots at Mac... or at least, so he hopes.

In reply to Christopher Little Hawk MacDonald (msg # 364):

As Mac passed the rusting mailbox, he noted the right side of the open gate had a faded "BEWARE OF DOG" sign attached to it.

Once in the front yard, he crunched across the carpet of detritus. Ahead was the farmhouse. Off to the left in the direction of the radar dome was a chest-high split-rail fence. Beyond looked like a lane, then another fence, then an overgrown orchard.

Mac veered left, it was the radar dome he was interested in after all. He continued to monitor the geiger counter.

In reply to Christopher Little Hawk MacDonald (msg # 366):

Mac came to the fence. He could easily hop it. Across the lane was another chest-high fence.

The radar dome was ahead, through the orchard. Or, he could turn left again, go down the lane which led to the road, then travel down the road to the dome.

Re: Unauthorised Entry

In reply to Christopher Little Hawk MacDonald (msg # 368):

From the other team members' point of view, Mac disappeared into the farm yard behind the trees and overgrown bushes for a few moments, then reappeared on the road, coming in from a side lane behind the barricade.

He trotted down the road. The Geiger counter ticked but very slowly, indicating there wasn't an elevated level of radiation above background.

The radar dome was atop a boxlike metal base, which was itself on top of a steel tower. It was behind some trees, and behind that a gate and barbed-wire topped chainlink fence to the right (south side) of the road.

There was a sign on the gate in English and French proclaiming this site had once been operated by ENVIRONMENT CANADA. Up close it looked like someone had shot the dome with a small-bore autocannon, 25-30mm, in a haphazard fashion. Someone else had probably taken a few pot-shots at it at some point.

Behind the tower was a small building.

OK, Mac moves closer. It all looks like it's been deserted for some time. He'll go look at the radar tower first and then move on to the building.

Re: Unauthorised Entry

Seeing Mac winding out on her own, Kelsey curses softly, then paces after at intervals, keeping him in sight and not crowding.  She is making sure he is covered, and that she keeps herself alert and as hidden as possible using her well trained field craft.

Before she headed out she radioed quickly:  "On your six, Mac.  Security."

Following Mac at a discrete distance.  Staying alert to the situation, staying in as much cover as possible, using field craft.

Carbine locked and loaded, safety on.

Re: Unauthorised Entry

Taras ordered Wayne to stay with the vehicles.

Keep an eye. We'll be around and not too far.

Then the Ukrainian moves towards the tower with the rest of team. Not too nervous but definitely curious about the nature of the structure. Taras plays with the conical flash suppressor of the AKS-74U across his chest. The higher gas pressure at the end of the barrel forced the designers to implement it instead of the muzzle brake of his big brother the AK-74. This device at the end of the barrel functions as an expansion chamber to bleed off gases which would otherwise cause a violent recoil. He unfolds the crude stock.

Re: Unauthorised Entry

The fence looked intact, as did the padlock on the gate. There were several strands of rusted barbed wire strung atop the gate and fence. Aside from a little rust there was no obvious damage.

There didn't seem to be an easy way in. Getting tools meant sending someone back or having someone from the vehicles run them over.
