OOC5: Son (or Daughter) of OOC
In reply to Eric C. Wright (msg # 6):
The only version of the "FN" (as they are called) the CF used was with the fixed wooden buttstock, even in airborne units.
Funny anecdote about cleaning sand out of the FN:
"The sand issue is overplayed with the Canuck FN, here's an example from the days when I carried one.
During a day of "advance to contact" training, our platoon commander "asked" a few of us to lend our "shootin' irons" to three American reserve officers that wanted to go in on the next advance up into some sand dunes. I quite enjoyed the smoke break and when the shootin' was over the smiling Yank returned my beloved FN rifle with the curt complaint that "It broke". Time for IA's and Stoppages. Action is stuck to the rear, check mag, empty of rounds but full of sand, roll over rifle, pour sand out of action (Canuck FN has a cutaway body cover with a bridge for using charging clips), drop mag, with thumb depressing holding open device bash butt of rifle against a stout tree, action is released, ask Yank "Can you do that with an M16?", worked the action a few times and it was ready to go. Faster than you can read this I had it back in service, after all I used to train cadets to strip and assemble it in under a minute, while blindfolded.
Although the cut away body cover allowed debris to get into the action it also made it easier to clean it out as well."
Thanks,
Tony
