Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
I can't be certain, I certainly don't feel any different. I read certain hypotheses regarding what some call "timeline crossings", sometimes there can be a reality backlash if you meet yourself from another timeline.

I feel perplexed, though, at your ability to recall the memories of your other selves. It has to make you wonder who you are. Are you the person that died, but displaced, or the person alive with displaced recall?

I mean, consider it if you will, what memory is. They are electrical pulses between neurons in your head, right? If that's true, where is the overlap? I wonder if perhaps the electrical channeling of your brain has echos in other realities. What if that's déjà vu? Can you imagine? Or maybe when you feel like you've been someplace, or you can't remember the person you told some... some fact to. I don't know. Maybe soon it won't matter.

Susan has time for input, but more importantly, suggestions for anyone she wants to bring.

She senses a point of no return.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan takes her glasses off to clean them while she considers Lucy's words.

I don't really have an answer to that. I'd like to think that all of my selves are connected, and we all feel each other this way, but I have no real way of knowing. I certainly didn't have this kind of knowledge before today. So I hope that I am the person left alive, but with displaced recall. I know that I'm Susan, but beyond that... It feels like this state of being may have been developing for some time. Lately, I've been having headaches, blackouts, lost time, and hallucinations. It's possible that in a couple of hours, this whole experience will be gone from my memory.

She looks at Lucy and smiles.

But I certainly hope that I never lose any memories of when we're together.

She runs down a mental list of people who might help her get to the bottom of the tower. Lists, charts, and tables always help her to keep the chaos at bay.

Rory - How can she ask him to leave his violent lifestyle if she pulls him back into it on a regular basis?
Lizzie - Lizzie was already injured once because of Susan's involvement with mob affairs, but that can never be allowed to happen again.
Sarah - Right about now, she's either exhausted from her rituals or she's meeting up with Greg. She's simply not available.
Mr. Maida - He seems to have a sense of curiosity and of justice. He would be the ideal choice, if he can be reached.
Mr. Renshoo - He uses his magic recklessly and unethically. He's also a good deal older than Mr. Maida. Can his heart take the strain of a mission like this? Even so, perhaps he would be an acceptable substitute for Mr. Maida.
Amadora - She could possibly get them through the outer layers of security, but she would draw far too much attention. If anything, her help would make things harder.
The Benefactor - He would indeed be helpful, except that he doesn't want any of them to go to the tower in the first place.

Lucy, I might be able to get a helping hand with this mission. A couple of acquaintances of mine, Mr. Maida and Mr. Renshoo, might just be willing to come with us to the bottom of the tower. Could you find a phone booth?

Lucy pulls the vehicle over, having spotted a telephone booth near a street corner. Susan would have to walk a short distance to it, but, for now, nothing seems to spring out to her.

She puts her money into the change receptacle after which the dial tone clicks and thrums.

Hello, could you please connect me with a shop in Chinatown? I think the name is, um, Artifacts from the Mysterious Orient, or something like that. I believe the proprietor's name is Mr. Renshoo.

Of course, one moment while I connect you.

The phone clicks, then a disconnected dial tone goes off in her ear. It repeats two more times before the operator comes back on the line. My apologies ma'am, that number appears to have been disconnected.

Susan can attempt to call someone else.

Susan can attempt to visit Maeda in person.

Susan can attempt to visit the tower on her own.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Oh, OK... Thank you for trying, and have a nice day...

She dejectedly hangs up the phone. Thinking logically, there were any number of factors that could've prevented her from getting in touch with them. It was kind of a long shot that she would be able to convince either Renshoo or Maida to join them on this roller-coaster ride in the first place. Susan considers her next step. Should she visit Renshoo and Maeda in person? The Benefactor won't be slowed down for long. The white-gloves aren't targeting him, so he shouldn't run into any resistance. As soon as he's completed the tweak on the broadcast tower, he'll likely pick up the weapons left for him and appropriate a car. He also mentioned that he has a way to pick up some kind of signals from people, so he could potentially track them down. If they took a detour to Chinatown, their chances of being caught (either by the Benefactor or the white-gloves) before they even reach the tower would shoot up. She shakes her head as she comes to the conclusion that they'll need to head to the tower without any further delay.

Susan gets back into the vehicle with Lucy, seeing the look on her face. Nobody answered, I take it. Hey, we've gotten out of worse.

Susan knows she's just trying to keep a stiff upper lip. We need a plan of attack though, I wonder if we could find some blueprints anywhere.

Susan would recall that Sarah has the blueprints in her apartment.

She could go to the apartment and risk getting Sarah involved.

She could continue on, going through the front doors blazing like in the old Western moving pictures.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan is worried about the delay, but Sarah's apartment is closer than Renshoo's shop. Plus, the outcome of the trip is much more certain than trying to convince a couple of magicians to join a suicide mission.

You need the blueprints? A friend of mine has a copy. Alright, looks like we'll need to make a detour. Take a left at the next corner...

If Sarah is sleeping, then she'll just slip in and out without waking her. If she's awake, then she should be at Renshoo's shop by now. It wouldn't be right to endanger Sarah before she gets to reunite with her husband at long last.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
That feeling that she's running out of time returns when the two women enter the apartment. Much to Susan's surprise, if not horror, she sees the freshly written note and a prone Sarah, still having not moved form her place. Her eyes instinctively move to the clock, and it suddenly chimes. Lucy jumps, then whispers to herself. No...

The time is 8:00 pm. Susan distinctly remembers arriving at the diner at 8:01, having left by this time. Something feels wrong. Lucy shakes her head. Where are we?

Her eyes watch the second hand move, its golden face surrounded by two cherubs and the smooth arms of an angel watching placidly. When are we...

Lucy runs over to the windows, throwing open the thick curtains. It's night. Lucy reels, falling on her rear. She clamps her hands to her head as disorientation takes hold. I... it... it can't... it can't be...

Susan, a woman of substantial willpower, could muscle through the feelings Lucy struggles with without losing her sanity. Somehow their ventures together feel like some sort of dream. Lucy begins to feel her own body, determining if she does actually exist or if this is a dream.

This is absolutely an ill omen, no doubt.

Susan can attempt to consolidate their venture at this point and continue on.

Susan can attempt to play it safe, perhaps hold off on their work.

There is no turning back after this point... she feels assured.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan frowns. It may have been a mistake to come here. Watching Lucy's reaction, she begins to get a picture of what it must have been like for her in the asylum. Her heart aches for her friend's pain. Well, there's no way that she'll take Lucy into a dangerous situation in her current mental state. And Susan is not so foolish as to think she can somehow make it to the basement of the tower alone.

Susan doesn't have the answers that Lucy's looking for, but she can at least be there for her. She silently takes a seat on the floor next to Lucy, and gives her a warm hug. Just as her mother did, Susan begins to softly hum Hush, Little Baby as she gently rocks back and forth with Lucy in her embrace.

She can't stand to bring any more hurt into this woman's life. Was she wrong to convince her to come along after all?

Lucy finally begins to calm after several moments of clenching her eyes shut. When she finally pulls away, she waves a hand at her face to cool herself off. God, Susan, I'm sorry, I felt like... I felt like I was losing my head there...

Mhn... Susan... is that you?

Susan sees she can grab all the documents and hope to sort them later. Lucy looks up at Susan, ready to bolt if they need to.

Alternatively, Susan can stay and bring Sarah into their adventure...

Well, so much for sneaking in and out. There's no help for it now. Susan nods her head and smiles warmly at Lucy. She pats Lucy's back reassuringly as she releases her friend and stands up. Quietly walking over to Sarah, she picks up the note that she left for Sarah earlier. Then she kneels down and softly replies,

Yes, I'm here, but you had me worried! You were in pretty bad shape when I got here earlier. Are you... are you feeling alright now? Can I get you a cup of coffee or anything-- maybe some dinner? Do you need some more rest?

Listen, if you feel up to it, I want you to meet another friend of mine. We wanted to ask you for a small favor, and... and I also have some really great news for you...

Susan knows she should just blurt it out, but she wants to make sure that Lucy's ready for it first.

Sarah just stares at Susan, not sure what she's about to say. Lucy gives a nod when mentioned, but has started chewing on her thumbnail. She seems nervous, and all the while, amongst them all, the hole in the floor sits in wait.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
So she doesn't want anything to eat or drink, or maybe she's too tired to speak? Susan starts to introduce Lucy, but she knows that there's really only one thing on Sarah's mind. It's what she's spent all day doing: trying to reach her husband. She decides to tell her the good news first, and if she's still here in a minute, then she can make introductions.

Listen, Sarah, I have some wonderful news for you. The reason that you haven't been able to contact Greg's spirit is because he's been resurrected!

Susan lets out a girlish squeal of delight for her friend, and continues in an excited tone,

Now, I don't know all the details, but Mr. Maida and Mr. Renshoo have managed to bring him back. He's in a fragile state just now, but I just know that he would certainly love it if you were the first one to welcome him back! He's over at Mr. Renshoo's store as we speak!

She'll mention the Westinghouse Tower blueprints and Lucy in a minute, if Sarah's attention allows for it.

Sarah's attention won't allow for it, as she screams aloud and grabs Susan. I have to see him! I have to see him! Oh my God Susan, I have to see him!

She immediately looks at herself, perplexed. Wait, I can't go out like this!

She scans the room, finding the garb she removed previously. She begins to put on a shirt, pants, and looks for a coat. C'mon Susan, let's go!

She can either go with Sarah and attempt to get in contact with Renshu.

She can refrain, letting her go alone and heading to the tower with Lucy.

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan glances at Lucy, who is still recovering from her panic attack. Is it worth it to subject her dear friend to such turmoil so soon on the heals of her personal crisis? She probably needs a little more time to recover before she'll really be ready for action. It would be very satisfying to help reunite Sarah with her husband at the antiquities store. Plus, this would potentially give her another opportunity to ask Mr. Renshoo and Mr. Maida for their assistance. She smiles as she replies,

Sure Sarah, we're right behind you! I just need to borrow those old blueprints you had lying around. Do you mind if I grab them really quickly on the way out? Oh, and we won't need to worry about hailing a cab, since we have a car out front.

To Lucy she shrugs and says,

To answer your questions from earlier, I'd say we went back in time by about an hour or so. We're in Sarah's apartment, and Judging from this note that I left her, we should be in my thread, or one very similar to it. Say, is there any way that you can slow down the Benefactor from tracking us? We'll need a bit more time to reach the tower. We'll just be making a slight detour, but it should be well worth it!

She pauses in for a moment as she considers what would that statement must sound like to Sarah. After some silent deliberation, she reckons that Sarah probably wouldn't care about anything other than Greg at this point. She decides that introductions between Sarah and Lucy can be made on the way.

Sarah looks over at Susan. Astelphemis!

She looks at Susan, her frazzled hair drifting in the silence. Her eyes search over Susan, her gaze going to the floor. Lucy looks over Sarah, perplexed. Astelphemis?

You're dialating... like an eyeball, it makes people walk backwards. You're slipping, I think. Wow. And the box... the box says you're Lucy the Lost and Susan the Suffocated. She's moving the maze.

Lucy sneers. We're being put back in the maze...

Sarah giggles. But, listen in, you're the cheese! The walls are knocked down and we're all free to play. C'mon girls, let's meet with destiny! Oh, the blueprints!

They're grabbed up by Sarah, Lucy taking them in her hands. She peruses the notes, shaking her head. There's something down here, in the basement area. Strange, it's like a chamber. I can only imagine what could be down there. It appears that... look, look at this page. There is a sort of filled in area here, there is an old sewer.

She bites her lip. It's a relic from Old Chicago, but don't imagine it will be very large, we may need to get something for our arms and knees. If we can break down the wall somewhere here we may be able to get in this sub-basement.

If we were going to pick something less suicidal there's four entrances on all the faces of the building. We could walk in, and there, take the elevator.

As far as the Benefactor, he's likely dead or calling us rogue actors. We're already halfway dead... let's do what we need to and not worry about him. He'll need time to call in resources.

Susan can ask questions or make final suggestions, otherwise the scene will move on...

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan just stares at Sarah. Of all the weird things that she's said, this is by far the weirdest. She was so focused on Greg just a moment ago, and now she's talking about destiny? It must be because of that box's influence. She covered it up earlier, but maybe it takes more than that to stop it from affecting people.

Thank you for the blueprints! But are you feeling alright? You were dead set on meeting with Greg a moment ago, and now you're talking about destiny and mazes... What's happening to you? Is the maze the same thing as a tangle of threads? Who's moving the maze? And if I'm the cheese, then who are the rats?

Is Sarah trying to warn them about the white gloves? How would she even know anything about all of that? Then Susan realizes that she's getting caught up in Sarah's pace. Her bizarre statements might just be the product of over-excitement combined with utter exhaustion. They don't necessarily have any deeper meaning. Or those odd utterances might somehow be from the box. What was it again, a ghost phone? Sighing deeply and putting a hand on Sarah's shoulder, she continues,

Sarah, Greg is waiting for you. You are not going to join an incredibly dangerous mission when your long-term goal is right in front of you. It's been a long time since you've seen him in the flesh, hasn't it? We'll take you to him...

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Sarah suddenly shouts. I'm not crazy!

The room goes quiet, Lucy wanting to speak but deciding against it. It's a maze... I spoke to the box, I wanted to see Greg and it showed me things. It was a banquet, don't you see?

I read about it when I was a girl, a man that walked backwards. 2 Elsabim, chapter twenty four. It's not a recognized book by Islam, but it talks about a man that needed to avenge the rape and murder of his wife and the killing of his 14 sons. They were killed by his rival and brother, no less! He prayed and fasted for 30 days, praying to Allah, and the angel Al'malak Astalfem'is came and told him how to walk backwards into mirrors and come out in the past.

It was great, there were all sorts of rules. You had to do it during a full moon with halite of the Black Sea, but only the most perfect crystals! It's funny because the ritual bans the milk of any animal, and if he drinks within the week before the ritual will fail, it almost sounds koshur! Then he needed 1 handful of gold flakes, an 8 foot mirror with a frame made from a dead cedar of Lebanon!

And it worked! He walked backward from the mirror and killed his mother and father after their marriage! Then Al'malak Astalfem'is rose out of their blood and slit his throat then carried him to heaven.

Lucy is wide-eyed at this tale. Yeah... we should probably be seeing her husband... can we go? Please?

This story has a point! I wasn't sure how that would help me, but maybe it would help you?

Oh, no, we're not going to start communing with... whatever is in that floor. Oh my God, is that blood on the ground? Susan I thought you said this was an apartment, not some occult library!

Re: Whispers of Susan Moore
Susan quickly reassures Sarah,

Sarah honey, no one thinks you're crazy. And yes, I think your story could be quite useful.

She also turns to Lucy to alleviate her growing apprehension,

And Lucy, Sarah is just desperate to reunite with her formerly dead husband. She may have gone a little bit overboard with today's activities, but... but surely, you would go to similar lengths if you could bring back your Gary, wouldn't you? You can understand what kind of extreme measures a person might go to to bring back the love of their life, can't you? And to be absolutely fair, this is no more strange than any number of things that we've done today alone, like slaying a giant, living, spider that appears to be a car; or fighting with faceless men in white gloves who are somehow made of string; or dying billions upon billions of times; or accidentally traveling back in time! None of us can claim the high ground here; we're every bit as bizarre as one another. And really, when you play in the mud, you get dirty. It's hard to play with supernatural forces without using them at some point, so what's wrong with a little ritual here or there? The ends justify the means.

And you have to admit that time travel sounds like a very powerful tool, if properly applied. We could save your husband from ever being slain by the white gloves. We could save Sarah's husband from ever being killed too, though I guess she doesn't need such a service now that Gregs's back amongst the living. And, and we could save my Gary from being poisoned...

Her eyes start to tear up at the thought. Then she remembers that this might be a bit of a shock to Sarah. She turns to Sarah before continuing,

Oh, but I haven't told you yet, have I? No, the Benefactor wouldn't let me... But if he's given up on Gary, then I'll give up on him! You should know that my husband, Gary, was killed not too long ago, and I mean to bring him back just like your Greg! I'm sorry for hiding it from you, but his boss wanted to keep his death a secret. But right now, I don't see much of a point in keeping it under wraps any longer. I want you to know that I've shared your pain all along; we're truly kindred spirits! And now we might be able to simply undo all of the hurt that we've been through!

Turning back to Lucy, she exclaims,

And we could even save each other from dying all those years ago! We could finally live in the same universe! Wouldn't that be a good reason to use a ritual? We could...

But there's something wrong here. The logic is flawed, somehow. Susan frowns as she stares at the floor in consternation. What is wrong with this perfect plan? Think! Then it dawns on her, and she dejectedly slumps down to the floor.

Except that... except that time isn't linear. If we did go back in time, it wouldn't be within our own thread. We wouldn't be changing our past, but rather making a new past, a new branch of the timeline, a new series of threads. I've experienced enough tonight to feel the truth of it. We could only make a better future for alternate versions of ourselves by going into the past... damnit!!

Weakly, she smiles up at Sarah and tells her,

I'm not crazy either; I hope...

Susan hugs Sarah back, thankful to have her secret out in the open now. She nods as she replies,

Yes, we've kept you from your Greg for too long! Let's head over to Renshoo's store right away! They seem to be pretty powerful, if that light show from the other day is any indication. Hopefully they can replicate the process two more times, and turn all three of us into former widows!

Looking to Lucy, she asks,

Wouldn't that be wonderful?
