Conan the Barbarian, Hyborian Kingdoms.

 Greetings,

I have been a huge fan of the Conan the Barbarian stories over the years. The world created by Robert E Howard, and the authors that followed made a world rich in culture and adventures. From the frozen lands of Asgard,Cimmeria, down through the civilized lands of Aquilonia, Zingara, to the city states of Shem, the ancient tombs and deserts of Stygia, and finally to the steaming jungles of the Black Kingdoms. The world of Hyboria cries out for stalwart men of iron and courage,to brave the dangers of these lands.

Be you a Barbarian from one of the northern lands, with muscles and a naked broad sword, to a Knight of one of the civilized lands. Even a Sorcerer, practicing the arcane arts in a dark tomb of Stygia. All these things are the world that Robert E.Howard created.

I am looking for a GM that has the same knowledge and love of the Conan novels and the land he walked in, as I do. I seek to rp a character in this world, and the concept can be discussed with any potential GM that is kind enough to respond to this add.

Thank you for your time and attention. May Mitra watch over you.

In reply to Bannacor (msg # 1):

I'm new to this site but quite familiar with Howard's stories and a veteran of several RPG systems that would work well for the setting.

It also happens that I'd been considering setting up a Hyborian Age game--if you're willing to work with a GM learning the ropes of RPOL, I'd certainly be willing to run a sword and sorcery campaign.

I am a vet of RPOL, but some of the GM controls still frustrate me. Hell yes!...ahem.... I mean indeed, I am more then willing to work with you. THANK YOU for responding.

I have read most of the Conan stories over the years, paper back wise. Never got into comics since I was a kid,but I hear they are good.

Ok, I will put something together here shortly to advertise in the 'Wanted - Players' forum. (I'm thinking maybe 3 PCs total for a full party?)

To that end: do you have any system preferences, since you initially proposed the game? I'm thinking one of these, in descending order of preference...

- On Mighty Thews
- Barbarians of Lemuria
- Dungeon World
- Fate Core

Gulp!. In my zeal to get a Game set in Hyboria, I totally forgot about a system to use. Are any of t hem in free pdf?

In reply to Bannacor (msg # 5):

On Mighty Thews is available as a $5 PDF (https://onmightythews.com/) although the "play aids" link on the front page of that site (https://dl.dropboxusercontent....hews%20Play-Aids.pdf) provides what is essentially a free summary/quickstart of the rules.

It's geared toward sword & sorcery (which is why I listed it first), and I expect that as the GM I'd be calling for dice rolls as dramatically necessary/useful anyway, no matter what system we used.

Dungeon World has its rules available for free online (http://book.dwgazetteer.com/).

Fate Core has its rules available for free online (https://fate-srd.com/).

No worries. I'll use On Mighty Thews but there should be no need for anyone to purchase the PDF if they look at the "Play Aids" PDF I linked. I'll clarify the steps in the 'Making a Character' column on p. 1 in the game forum.

At the moment, I'm thinking a city in Turan (maybe Aghrapur or Samara?), but I'm totally open to suggestions if there's some location in particular you'd like.

Cities in the empire of Turan, I am good with that,as many of the best Conan stories, took place in the Desert. Do you care what part of the world a character comes from?

It worked, you run the GM controls better then I do. I am thinking of playing someone from Nemedia. A once upon a time Man at Arms for some Noble or other. He got involved in some intrigue or another and had to leave in a hurry.

Conan the Barbarian, Hyborian Kingdoms.

I have an adventure set in that world about 50 years after Conan vanished.

Appointment in Zamora starts out along the Road of Kings. The PC's are hired as caravan guards headed east towards Agraphur. Here's the invitation I created at Yahoo groups:

Fighters! Fighters wanted!” The caller was an older man dressed in the robes of a desert nomad with a fine scimitar at his belt and the gleam of gold on his fingers and the glitter of jewels in his ears.

You, lad, you look like a strong young fellow. How about signing on with me? I've a caravan headed out tomorrow, going east along the Road of Kings. We'll travel through Corinthia and Zamora, and then on to Agrhapur on the shores of the Inland Sea. You'll see the sights. Come home with a pocket full of gold coins and stories to tell your grand children."

The old man looked tough enough, but the huge warrior who strode along a pace or two behind him with skin as black as coal looked as if he could take on a squadron or troopers single handedly with a fair chance of winning the bout. The bodyguard scowled at anyone who came within a pace or two of his charge, and if the trespasser should miss the warning somehow, the Shemite extended a thick knobby club to push him away.

No, no, Jubal!” cried the old man. “This heroic fellow is going to sign up with us, aren't you young man? I'll pay you ten gold lions right now, and fifty more when we arrive in Agrhrapur.

He lifted a leather purse that jingled with the dull tone of heavy coins.

Are you a fighter? Or a ranger? Perhaps a barbarian?” He looked the young man over carefully.

OOC: I'm putting together a caravan to travel along the Road of Kings in Hyboria. This is the age of Conan the Barbarian. We will be using the Pathfinder Core Rulebook as the bible, and all Player Characters will start out at Level 1. The primary opening I have is for guards, who must be Fighters, Rangers or Barbarians. I will accept passengers and merchants, willing to pay their way for protection on the open road, but they must have a solid back story, and the means to pay. Even these characters are restricted to Level 1, and I will accept no magic users of any kind. No wizards, no sorcerers, no clerics, no druids, no bards. No magic users of any kind. This is the world of Robert Howard and magic is very thin on the ground, and really nasty when you come across it. (Think Call of Cthulhu magic.)

One more stricture: Only humans need apply. The world of Conan has no demi-humans. No elves, no dwarves, no halflings, no gnomes, no orcs.

Weapons & Armor

Keep it simple. These are the items you will have ready access to:

Knives, axes, spears, self-bows, slings, leather armor (boiled or studded), hide armor

These items will cost two to three times their price in the Player's Guide:

Swords, chain mail, crossbows

If you can stand all the No's, I think I can offer you a good story and many adventures.

After a couple of year hiatus I am reviving a Conan adventure based in Messantia. Two of my players expressed an interest in picking it back up, but I need a couple of more to continue. I've been watching this thread for some time. I respect your perseverance in finding a Conan game, and have a soft spot for Conan fans.

I run this game using the GURPS 4th edition ruleset but use Mongoose Conan for inspiration and resources. I'm doing my best to preserve the tropes that make the Hyborean Age unique, like sword and sorcery, noble savage, and magic is evil among others.

Feel free to come check it out. If you are unfamiliar with GURPS, no fret, I can assist.
