Ars Magica 5e

An Ars Magica game I was playing in died recently. Sadly we had just barely gotten past character creation.

I have a magus and companion who need a new home.

My magus is Chrysaetos Sirnaus (House Bjornaer) and is skilled with Creo and Aurum and has a focus with Lightning. The game was set in the Rhine Tribunal so I might need to make some changes, but that's fine.

My companion is Glogryan a giant blooded knight who was taken by faerie as a child. After twenty years in faerie, he gained his freedom but he was cursed as he left and still has trouble with his changeling twin. Again, created as a native of Konstanz and some changes would likely be required.

Ars Magica 5e

Hi,

I've never played Ars Magica before, but really want to. Do you think a rotating GM style thing could work, with the troupe system? I can't GM by myself, but sharing the burden might make it work.

Troupe style play can work. Not sure of the best way to do it in RPoL.

I feel in love with Ars Magica back in 1st edition and ran a campaign that lasted years face to face. We moved to 2nd edition when it was released but didn't care for 3rd.

Currently I'm not up to running a game here on RPoL but could be a secondary GM in an ongoing game. I just need a few months to recover from some personal life issues first.

I'm just starting up an Ars Magica 5e game, preferably with some troupe-style play, but certainly with a lead GM:

Ars Magica 5e

Once again I'm looking for an Ars Magica 5e game. For some reason it seems there's a high mortality rate for these games on RPoL.

I have a wide variety of magus and companion ideas. I'm willing to help develop a covenant and do some of the behind the scenes work. But, as I'm running my own Ars Magica game, I'm not really interested in running stories in another soon.

Ars Magica 5e

A Rhine Tribunal game where we're relatively young magi attempting to start a Covenant on Pfalz Island would be fun.

Basically, an Ars Magica game with relatively few wizards that's reasonably active is what I'm looking for right now. Too many wizards and the game seems to stall during startup. I think three or four wizards would be a good starting point. Later, once the game is moving if needed, we could recruit additional players.

This looks like an amazing system. I don't have the fifth edition book, but I'd love to start out (as a GM or player) with a 4e game at some point. Would that interest you, Shadowsmith? Or anyone else?

I've been wondering about exactly the same sort of thing. I was actually thinking that what might work well is 3-4 magi and almost no grogs nor companions at all to start with. That would cut down on the book-keeping a ton and could help get things moving faster.

Yes, statesman88, if you're starting something up, I'd be interested. I was in a game or two with Shadowsmith before that ended prematurely.

Re: Ars Magica 5e

Statesman88, 4th edition - gah, I'm not really familiar with that edition having skipped from 2nd to 5th. I really disliked the direction White Wolf took the game.

I do have the free 4th edition pdf and could probably figure it out. But would prefer 5th.

I have to agree with callen, no companions or allow players the option to play a wizard or companion. But a grog or two per PC isn't a bad idea. Grogs take minutes to build and can be very useful.

Re: Ars Magica 5e

So here's a question, for interested people: what do you value most, in an Ars Magica game?
  • Character development
  • Roleplaying, relationships, diplomacy
  • Exploring magical/mystical places
  • Combat
  • Management of the covenant and covenfolk
  • Historically realistic setting

Re: Ars Magica 5e

Pretty similar, here. :)
  1. Character development
  2. Exploring magical/mystical places
  3. Roleplaying, relationships, diplomacy
  4. Management of the covenant and covenfolk
  5. Combat
  6. Historically realistic setting

I have some concepts in mind, but would need some more planning and study to run a saga. I'm leaning towards the Tribunal of Thebes, or the Tribunal of the Levant, if I do successfully launch something in the next few weeks. :)

I suppose I am in a similar line up but I do enjoy my combat situations.

  1. Character development
  2. Exploring magical/mystical places
  3. Roleplaying, relationships, diplomacy
  4. Combat
  5. Management of the covenant and covenfolk
  6. Historically realistic setting

Re: Ars Magica 5e

Mine is not so dissimilar. I like character development a lot, but I pushed it down because I don't like making magi who want to sit in their lab and not get involved. I would rank historical realism higher, but I only specifically like it higher when it's a saga goal; I've been quite happy in games having nothing to do with historical reality nor the real world at all.

  1. Exploring magical/mystical places
  2. Roleplaying, relationships, diplomacy
  3. Character development
  4. Combat
  5. Management of the covenant and covenfolk
  6. Historically realistic setting

In response to Shadowsmith above, I had missed the 4e comment, knowing the thread is 5e. In my mind 5e streamlined the mess that 4e became and cut back on a lot of the problems (frequently that was wanting to be good at something becoming automatically abusive).

I would think about now this should be moved away from here to a different discussion board. The best is probably starting a game with just an OOC thread and running discussion there. Not only would it follow forum etiquette better, but it would make finding past comments a lot easier since they would be archived in the game's forum itself.

Re: Ars Magica 5e

Good point! I have officially created a "game" forum for discussion of all things Ars Magica.

EDIT: I'm very close to caving and buying the 5e core PDF. Everything is just SO COOL!
