DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
So, 33 years ago my brother and I were first introduced to dungeons and
dragons by way of this campaign.  We were 10 at the time (we're twins) and we
didn't so much roleplay it as we did LARP it.  I can still remember being out
in the woods with the player's handbook open to the wizard spell section and
a cloth bag of dice, and my brother usually played a warrior or ranger of some
sort, with a stick for a sword and a garbage can lid for a shield.

Anyway, after 33 years of roleplaying each, we are interested in returning to
where it all began (sans LARP'ing).

We are hoping to find a GM who either has the newly released 'Into The
Borderlands' 5e conversion module or has access to the original and would be
willing to convert the encounters to 5e.

Here would be the gaming criteria we would be hoping for:

1.  a party of 6 (myself, my brother, and 4 others)

I wish to play a Tortle Cleric (Tortle is from the Tomb of Annihilation
supplement) using the Twilight Domain (from Unearthed Arcana).

My brother wishes to play a Tabaxi Rogue.

The remainder of the party would consist of an arcane caster, 2 melee
combatants (ie. melee fighter, barbarian), and 1 ranged combatant (ie. ranged
    fighter, ranger)

2.  each character would get a stat array of 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 to assign as
    they see fit.

3.  each character would have a signature magical item (weapon, armor, or
wondrous item) that scales in magical ability as a character levels.

4.  acceptable material - any official 5e source as well as Unearthed
Arcana (must be able to provide link references to said material)

Everything is up for negotiation with a potential GM.

If you are at all interested please rmail Sardis and myself (Sardis' brother) and we can see if we can work out the details so everyone is happy.

DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
Thank you Zeeb for your consideration and for discussing what you would need in order to make the game enjoyable for you.  Unfortunately this changes the game far more than what we are looking for which would, in turn, make us 'unhappy' as players to play.

For the record, things that are not negotiable:

1.  desired races and classes for myself and my brother to play.

2.  the stat array requested

3.  access to the requested source material

Things that are negotiable:

1.  class composition of remaining players

2.  signature items that scale through out are not a necessity

DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
I love B2, it was my first module as well, and have run it more times than I can count on one hand - including in 5e, though self converted.  I also don't have the new conversion of B2, and wouldn't be buying it.  I'd make some changes to the module (based on other's suggestions and experience) and a lot is up for interpretation.  I don't know that this is the best idea either as doing it play by post isn't going to be able to match your nostalgia for it.

I'm not fond of 5e I much prefer the original Basic B2 was made for, or other TSR versions of D&D.  I also prefer those rules because they're much simpler which works better with PBP. If you're not set on 5e, I'd be happy to run it in MM LL+MF+AEC (which is a clone of Basic/Expert D&D + Gama World type stuff) You'd still be able to play a Tortise mutant (though not exactly a cleric, but might be able to have some healing and/or other mutations), and a Moktar (cat person, though not a rogue - more like barbarian) or Cat mutant, though not exactly what you asked.

If you're really set on 5e, I'll consider it. I'm familiar with the core of 5e, but don't know much about the expansions, are those races/options available anywhere else? The house rules I'd make is that I prefer a bit grittier rests, but the gritty rests option seems a bit too out there, so I'd like to try a full 3 days for a long rest and 1 sleep period (4 or 8 hours sleep/meditation) for a short rest once per day (I'd rather go with something closer to previous versions of D&D like 1 hp per day of rest, but not sure what to do about fighter second wind and healing hit dice etc. anyone with ideas feel free to give em to me.)  Same for Flanking, no flanking makes no sense, but the option for advantage is a bit much, so I'd go with a +2.  I generally prefer not to use the multiclass or feat optional rules as they're prone to a bit too much wild variances of power between characters.  I also like to give basic humans an extra +1 to an ability score of choice as they otherwise are under-powered.

The ability score array seems a bit on the high end, you're supposed to be able to grow into your character with the ability score increases and starting with an 18 which will probably be 20 after racial adjustments, which means you don't have anywhere to go.  Seems a bit much. I do agree the standard array is a bit weak though, and would change the 15 to a 16 but I can live with your array, especially as everyone will be in the same boat, and it still won't save you from a horde of angry Kobolds. }:)-

I don't have any issues with your other requests other than what other players play, as that's up to them, but you already said that was negotiable.

As to posting, I can usually do a post or two weekdays but usually not on the weekends and holidays.  What kind of posting do you prefer?

DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
Hi Justisaur,

I appreciate the interest.  5e is the system I want to use (the only other DnD version I'd consider is 3.0/3.5).  I never learned 4e, and haven't played anything older than 3rd edition since 3rd was released so I would basically be learning the system all over again.

Also, I do not want to have to alter the game mechanics ( if 18,16,14,12,10,8 isn't acceptable, I'd consider 16,16,14,12,10,10).  If things seem too easy for the characters, make the encounters more challenging.

I'm not looking to recreate the nostalgia of the 1980s but rather to create a new nostalgia in line with 2020.

DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
I'm still kind of on the fence on it.  I'm not sure I'd be the right DM for the job, as it sounds like you may want a more Critical Role type DM, and I'm an old school one (though I've run every edition under the sun, as well as a few non-D&D RPGs).  It doesn't look like there's been a lot of interest from other DMs though, I'll leave it up to you if you want to wait for another who might be more what you're looking for or risk a go with me.

My last 5e game the players were enjoying quite a bit they said, I was just a bit fed up with 5e and wanted to try something else, but it might be easier to deal with 5e in PBP here as that was on roll20.

I'd prefer the array be something like 16 15 14 13 10 9.  Or even 16 15 14 13 12 11 would be acceptable.  A couple 16s is still just a bit much.  My only issue with making things more challenging is that tends to result in more xp which then results in an upward spiral of more challenging, more levels, requiring more challenge, etc.

I'm interested to see your Gamera character too :)

I would be accepting of 16,15,14,13,12,11

Regarding xp.  If it needs to be more challenging, only provide the original xp for the less challenging encounter?

Another alternative to it being more challenging is ignore XP entirely and level up by milestone. When done right it is just so, so much easier than dealing with XP. And since you don't need XP for fiddly things like crafting magic items anymore...

That was going to be my next suggestion.

Re: DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
Milestones are fine in a more linear module with specific goals, but B2 is a sandbox and there's no particular point to place a milestone at, leaving it pretty arbitrary when to give a level.

Giving XP for what an encounter's difficulty was before adjusting.  I don't think it would need to be modified much if at all (though still have to modify from 1e for appropriate challenge levels) if going with that array though.

I'm willing to start if everything sounds good to you.

Re: DnD 5e: Into the Borderlands/Caves of Chaos
Just wondering if we could recap what is being asked as far as whether we're in agreement to:

1.  a party of 2-6 (myself, my brother, and 0-4 others as the GM wishes)

2.  each character would get a stat array of 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 to assign as
    they see fit.

3.  each character would have a signature magical item (weapon, armor, or
wondrous item) that scales in magical ability as a character levels.

4.  acceptable material - any official 5e source as well as Unearthed
Arcana (must be able to provide link references to said material)

With XP being given out based on the campaign's original values regardless of whether encounters need to be made more difficult to challenge the group.

I'm not looking to have variant rules to the 5e rules set (ie: rests and flanking) (

I want to confirm, you are talking about the Module B2 The keep on the Borderlands?

I would love to DM for yall, all your criteria are good with me. I like the signature magical item idea, that's fun. and the Standard array 18, 16, 14, 12, 10. As long as your okay with a different party make up.
