After playing the computer game, I'd like to try it out as an actual RPG.

I might be interested in this as well, depending on what sorts of characters are allowed by the GM. Wouldn't be averse to party-collaborative character creation discussion, either.

Well, looks like we have a lot of interest. Now all we need is a GM to lead us. ;)

Kingmaker
As a player and as a GM, I've always loved empire-building type games. It's a genre of game in which video games still can't come close to paper-and-pencil, in my opinion. So this could be really fun, and this thread has been on my mind for a couple of days now.

That said, I have a few questions:

1) Does the system have to be Pathfinder?

I have no interest in running such a technically demanding system via play-by-post. I think I would like to try it with Dungeon World, as it seems like the variety of activities and heavy story requirements of a kingdom building game would fit nicely with the Powered By the Apocalypse engine. That said, I've never actually run or played in anything that is PBTA, so that's strictly theorizing on my part.

If that's not acceptable, I'd at least think about using 2nd edition AD&D, because I'm much more familiar with that system than Pathfinder, and it's much less mechanically demanding.

I generally dislike d20 and level-based systems in general, which is why I threw out Dungeon World as a possible option. I would also be open to using a World of Darkness type mechanical system as well.

2) Does the setting have to be Pathfinder?

I would personally prefer Symbaroum, which has a setting I absolutely love, but I also understand it's not a very well known setting.

If a more commonly known setting is preferred, my choice would be 1st edition Forgotten Realms; the original boxed set is what got me into gaming and probably the most read sourcebook I own, so that would be appealing to me as well.

Alternatively, if exploration/discovery is a significantly desirable element, we could perhaps do it old school and generate the world as we go?

3) What elements of Kingmaker are people looking for in particular?

What mix of politics, exploration, and combat are people looking for? Is it more of a balanced mix, or a classic 'kill the monsters and take their stuff' game, where in this case stuff = their land. Classic D&D high fantasy, or with a heavy dose of political grit, something closer to Game of Thrones?

I typically do better GMing dark and/or low fantasy, where everyone is a threat, even a peasant with a spear, and mages are powerful and interesting, but not to the extent of the typical 'linear warrior, quadratic wizard' model that permeates D&D.

How does that sound to people?

In reply to WinterRat1 (msg # 10):

Thank you for you interest. :)

1. Does the system have to be Pathfinder?

Yes.
The system I feel would have to be Pathfinder (1st edition). I personally love d20 and level-based systems in general. I think the major of the players who have expressed interest also want it to be a Pathfinder (1st edition) game.

2) Does the setting have to be Pathfinder?

Maybe.
I'm somewhat flexible on the setting. I would be interested in the Forgotten Realms setting, but the system would have to be Pathfinder or at the very least D&D 3.5.

3) What elements of Kingmaker are people looking for in particular?

On this I'm willing to go where a GM leads. Although, I would like a good mix of all elements....As long as there is some link to the Joseph Campbell's hero's journey/archetype (start off weak, have trials and slowly gain power as time goes on). Ideally, I would like some mythical elements.

The PCs although weak at first, should be able to reach the level of someone like Odysseus, Hector, Achilles, Ragnar Lothbrok or a even a Gilgamesh. Low to high fantasy, peasant to king/queen is possible during the course of a long game. Just look at Ragnar Lothbrok, a peasant farmer who became an earl (or jarl), who became a king.

1) Does the system have to be Pathfinder?

If it's the actual Kingmaker Adventure Path, I would prefer Pathfinder rather than a conversion.

If it's more Kingmaker-style of game, then I'm open to AD&D.

2) Does the setting have to be Pathfinder?

Not really fussed on the setting, honestly. Would prefer it to either be one I knew, or old-school where everyone is on an even playing field.

3) What elements of Kingmaker are people looking for in particular?

What mix of politics, exploration, and combat are people looking for?
I would prefer a mix, but not overly interested in heavy-political intrigue ala Game of Thrones.

WinterRat1:
1) Does the system have to be Pathfinder?

I actually hate d20-derivative systems, so I have no reservations at all about using a different system if that makes better sense for what you have in mind. Loathing d20 gives me a love/hate relationship with Pathfinder, because everything else about it is just fantastic, and then it goes and bases its system on that.

However, the only other systems I'm familiar with are GURPS and a couple of the Riddle of Steel successors/offshoots.  I don't know anything about Dungeon World or World of Darkness, so I can't really opine on those.  No interest whatsoever in AD&D, though.

WinterRat1:
2) Does the setting have to be Pathfinder?

Not necessarily.  I don't know anything about Symbaroum, but I'm not actually extremely familiar with Golarion, either. Using another setting, or even a generate-as-you-go method, would be fine with me.  I'd prefer not using Forgotten Realms, though, but it wouldn't be a dealbreaker.

WinterRat1:
3) What elements of Kingmaker are people looking for in particular?

I'm not that into politics and would not want anything Game of Thrones-y, but I like the exploration, the combat, the managing a domain bigger than yourself, the building something from the ground up that will (theoretically) endure.  One of the great things about Kingmaker is having those "creating a new part of the world" factors, but still being able to (or needing to) go "out in the field" and having adventures while you do it, instead of spending all your time sitting around a table farting with courtiers.

I'm kind of meh on classic high fantasy where there are Level 20 half-angel superheroes in every other tavern and magical weapons are a dime a dozen, but I can roll with it if I have to.

Just my two pieces of nominal local currency.

Re: Kingmaker
Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. It seems like this group is looking for something a little different than what I'm able to provide right now, so I'm not sure if it would be a good fit for everyone.

Good luck to you all in finding a GM!

Side question to LandWalker: You mentioned being familiar with a couple of the Riddle of Steel successors/offshoots. Is one of them Blade of the Iron Throne, by any chance?

To reiterate the original purpose of this thread.

I (we) are seeking a GM above other GMs! :)

Deus ex machina!

As stated originally, this thread seeks a Pathfinder Kingmaker game, start 1st level action. :)

Re: Kingmaker
it seems there is some confusion.

quote:
Seeking a GM above other GMs.  As the title says, I'm looking for a good kingmaker game. Hoping to get through the first chapter this time without the DM dropping or the party falling to pieces. Maybe if we have the group collaboratively make the party PCs?  Pathfinder, start 1st level action. :)

this, ((Seeking a GM above other GMs.)) is what im saying id do.

i got pm's about being just a gm for someone.

i have adhd, managing players and colaberating gm's is different. im shitty at managing players but i can be amazing at colaberating gm's and impacting the grand scale of the game for the many. Spreading rumors and tales, managing any pvp while keeping it mysterious if its npc or pc.

etc etc. thats what im open to doing. a gm above the other gm's, they run their players and I play the buffer between it all.

Re: Kingmaker
When I said, “Seeking a GM above other GMs”, what I meant was a GM who was a cut above a normal GM. I was not referring to a GM as a lead gm in a group of Game masters. That said, if a team of Gms wants to come together to make this work so be it. However it can happen.

Still seeking a Pathfinder Kingmaker game, 1st level action (lots of players to start). :)

Re: Kingmaker
I am currently running a complete overhaul of Kingmaker. Every encounter, every NPC, everything has been tweaked, changed, overhauled and improved upon through my several iterations of running the game.

Currently the game is over a year in and going strong with a full party but seeing that there is quite a bit of interest I can spin up another copy of the game.

Some things that this game improves upon

1) A larger cast of NPCs. You're not the only party sent out to conquer the wilderness and the other NPC parties may become good allies, or bitter rivals.

2) Dynamic bandits. They don't just sit around in a camp waiting to be picked off by the PCs. There are multiple factions, each with a set number of resources, headcount and objectives. They will raid, they will attack one another, they will ambush the party and they will retreat when beaten back.

3) Greatly expanded politics. The politics of the region play a much greater role in everything from the very start.

4) Brevoy doesn't just sit back idle. Players must make smart moves and act quickly to avoid their hard won gains being stolen from them by the crown.

If you're interested (and aren't already playing in my existing game :P) shoot me a PM. If there is sufficient interest I'll spin up a new version of the game from one of my "on hold" games.
