With that kind of wealth, what would make them go adventuring, and not retire, buy a castle/temple/academy, and make the most of things?

I'm not against the idea at all, but would influence the plan for the characters and the game.

I can think of a setup that could work. The character were trying to stop an evil god, but failed. Instead of killing them, the god sealed their power, reverting them to level 1. They managed to get away with their gear, but now they have to relearn their abilities if they are to face the god again.

I LOVE THIS idea.  I had a similar one I ran several years ago.  I'm not able to run a game right now but I would love to be a part of this one as a player.

Maybe they are all the daughters and sons of great adventurers. They inherited their parent's items and now they are going on an adventure of their own.

Building a mature game...

(link removed due to lack of interest)

...I am using dnd 3.5 because it is what I know, do either of you are firmly attached to

Using the cursed by a god suggestion...

For your combined background read the age of worms adventure path...and assume no one stopped the cultists ...no one resisted

Assume the age of worms is at full strength.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd prefer Pathfinder myself.  It's been too long since I've played 3.5 myself.

then build your characters using pathfinder rules and chock the translation errors up to the curse the god put on the party.

aside from ...
...a change in grammar over the CMB and CMD
...all five senses being combined into one skill
...a clunky by functional conversion between level adjust and race points

...I see both as similar enough.

when it comes down to it...dice are rolled...success or fail...things happen either way.

path finder tends toward (slightly) more robust characters, and as long as role-play and roll-play are at the same level, I have no problems with translating on the fly things that NEED translating.

But translating an entire campaign setting as well as 20 years of my life and game history is not something that can be done over night. I am certainly not going to do it if the game is going to fall apart in a couple months.

Interested.  Maybe one or more of the characters are descended from an old royal family, so they're out to rebuild their family dynasty?

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

partly what im thinking.

or you are being sponsored to colonize new lands and are given *ahem* substantial resources...

or you inherited a kingdom and its... 'treasury'.

whichever. 800k in the pocket of a level 1 screams kingdom stuffs to me, as has been mentioned elsewhere here.

one could also be a sponsored champion of a kingdom, if they prefer. Someone born with a golden spoon because their father/king/whatever doesnt want them to die and so thusly funds them VERY well.

both aspects can even be ran simultaneously, if some people want to play as rulers and others as champions (hey, heroes and kingdoms ;p )
the last kingmaker I ran also had a 'mercenary armies' component, this could also be implemented if anyone wants to play it.

as for the bloodlines aspect, it could actually be an avatar or 'god child' whos come to earth and while their power is a level 1 adventurer they were sent with gold (material things are trivial to the divine, whats 100 gold to 800,000 gold?).
if we do bloodlines, id also be open to the cursed option (a level 20 char who is made into level 1 through god magic) since it still reflects divine interaction of sorts.

the possibilities.

(notes, I'm open to most any side rules an variant rules and such. the internet is a beautiful thing and I love using it.

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

In reply to Shinoskay (msg # 18):

The 3.5 bloodline rules that I located bear a resemblance to Pathfinder's Mythic Adventures rules.  Among the listed types of ascension is godling, but there's more than one that might fit.   It's easy enough to simply rule that the characters have some form of amnesia.  I'm in another game that's already using the mythic rules, and it's a nice addition; my character there actually fits this premise (godling with amnesia) exactly.

Background skills; I'm a big fan of background skills.  I don't think that there's such a thing as too many skill points.

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

there's actually a rule set, I'm trying to google it now, where the gods were killed and their divine energy went out and into the army that killed them. Deifying the people and giving them divinity (like it was stolen from the god). there is a whole rule set for this, I'm pretty sure its bloodlines but I'm looking.

I remember it from some 5 years ago when I played a game of it, fun stuff.

*edit
as a note, we could do without 'the gods died'. we don't need that, we can JUST use the ruleset with a more ambiguous origin.

*edit edit
oh jeez, im stupid.
so I found what I'm talking about. its actually called birthright and officially its 3.5 but a lot of people have worked on converting it to pathfinder. I played a pathfinder version before and I found an old 'players wanted' for one in pathfinder (its how I found out what I was talking about).
we can actually implement birthright into kingmaker, and if you want then I'm fine with you using bloodline but perhaps mythic may be a bit too crazy. I will look into it but nothing is off the table really.

the birthright bloodlines book is what tripped me up.

*edit edit edit(you all may as well just reply whenever you see this, I'm in a research frenzy now).
reading the recent player wanted rpol pathfinder converted birthright... it looks like they also blended kingmaker with birthright. I will probably use something very much like what they have if thats the route you guys want to go.

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

so is that what you guys want? before a game is made we need to settle on what rules we are using.

Kingmaker ruleset (not the AP) pathfinder with birthright?
level 1 with level 20 wbl?

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

oh, are you strongly partial to medieval times? or would a different time set be ok? like maybe early industrial for 'modern' fire arms without insane tech power?

im good with any of them but im just realizing thats a thing we can play with.

im also good with mixing it up, have some places at low tech (maybe have it low tech and high magic to explain the tech difference?) and for high tech places its lower common magic?

Re: Pathfinder: Level 1 Characters, Level 20 Wealth

Just saying Birthright is a good bit older than 3.5 and much better in it's original 2e version.
