Mutants and Masterminds
I am looking to play a Mutants and Masterminds game. I would prefer an original setting rather than the Marvel/DC universes, one where supers are either or both of just beginning to emerge and fairly uncommon. I like to play weird characters that have no direct counterpart to any existing fiction, and enjoy well-built worlds that have realistic consequences for my actions.

I would throw my hat in as a player for a game like this.

Mutants and Masterminds
Hopeful bump! Maybe a brief explanation of the character I hope to play will rouse some interest.

quote:
Mirabelle is an emergent consciousness that arose when the woman who would become her master, an otaku shut-in named Marigold, added a piece of her own soul to an experimental emotion-channeling device her team was working on. Mirabelle is essentially composed of pure superego, her entire existence dedicating to helping Marigold achieve her dreams and idealized self. Fortunately, Marigold is a good person who wishes all the superhumans in the world -- even the supposedly "heroic" ones -- would stop giving humanity so much cause to fear and hate them, and instead work towards peaceful coexistence and understanding. The emotion device that forms Mirabelle's core makes her extremely empathic and allows her to create real physical effects out of emotions; conjuring fire from anger, flying with hope, healing with compassion, turning invisible with fear, and more besides.

Mirabelle has no superhero name, as Marigold feels such things create an undesirable gap between humans and empowered. The team that worked on the emotion-channeler prior to Mirabelle's "birth" nonetheless refer to her (somewhat derisively) as Miracle.

How original were you thinking?

How married are you to that concept?

Which is to say I think super hero games especially, work better when players have some sort of creative prompt for generating their characters. My home group uses a random powers deck my buddy found. Weaver Dice has the other players generate the powers based on a random tragedy keeping the player's loose goals in mind. Another one I saw had you powers be basically a 3 part gig where you write one then you pass to the player to your left and to your right.

Sir Swindle:

Mostly I just don't want the overhead of fifty bazillion heroes who have been around longer and are better than me in every conceivable way. I want to be part of the first wave, and not have to live in Super Dark Phoenix Psyker Wolverine Galactus' Left Bollock Man's shadow.

So if you want to take the real world and apply superheroes, that's fine. If you want a fictional City of Adventure, or to take things into the past or future, that could be fine. If you want to make a whole new world from the ground up that would work too, though it seems a lot of effort.

Sir Swindle:

Not immensely, but it ties up a lot of aspects I want to explore into a single mechanically interesting character. I'm certain that some degree of translation will be necessary to make the idea work in whatever metaphysics framework you come up with. I'm not entirely opposed to adapting one of my innumerable existing characters into a superhero, but I do find a lot of traditional super origin stories incredibly trite.

Orson Welles:
The enemy of art is the absence of limitations.

A wonderful sentiment, one I generally agree with.

Still looking for a game. I'm not married to the character concept I posted earlier; I'll take any compellingly written setting!

Re: Mutants and Masterminds
I think a re-do of Marvel's "New Universe" might be a good start to a game.  Everyone has the 'same' origin of a single event.  Or look at White Wolf's Aberrant game where the official cause is one event, but the real cause is a little more.... not sinister but not what the world thinks it is. Or was.
