Turn based empire / settlement builder?

I'd like to play a game, where each week represents a turn, where the players are building up their resources, performing actions, interacting with one another as well as NPCs.

I did one years ago inspired by Shadowrun, and we ended up with very different themes for each of the players.

In terms of theme I'm quite open, so homebrew or based on something established, fantasy, sci-fi, post-apocalypse, etc.

We could be rival nations/corporations/empires and building things at a macro level, such as increasing production by more mining colonies, or more a micro level and each person having a settlement, and building specific buildings in the settlement.

However I would need it to have hard rules, not just a god like where you can do pretty much anything.

Does anyone have, or be interested, in running such a game?

I would also be interested in playing such a game, although I am spread too thin to run it myself right now...

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Same here for interest. I've tried to run a few in the past and have always underestimated the time and effort a GM needs to run such a game.

Happy to co-GM if needed, but couldn't take sole responsibility for a game. Not at present anyway.

Question is though, what genre are you interested in?? Fantasy settlement / empire building?? Historical / age of sail Imperial colonisation (either real-world or?? Contemporary?? Post-apoc?? Sci-Fi??

I can't speak for the others, but as I put in my initial post, I'm quite open. Something not contemporary would be my main thought. Something beyond what we are, so magic, advanced technology, radioactive monsters, otherwise it would just be Company SimulatorTM, and where is the fun in that?

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

I've thought about something this on-and-off throughout the years.

I'd be especially interested to hear more about Nu_Fenix's experience playing this with Shadowrun. That is the setting I am most familiar with, and I'd be curious what worked and what didn't.

I would want to play, but could potentially co-GM as well. The sticking point is the rules, namely that I don't have any and I don't want to come up with them from scratch. Does anyone have rules that they've used before?

I can't remember much, as it was several years ago. We had a group played as, but also had a figurehead. The figurehead had a bonus to an action of our choice, which could be attacking, negotiating, spying, hacking, etc. You had so many points of different resources to spend each turn, which could be used to improve what you had by buying property, recruiting people, and so on.
As far as I could tell, it was a completely homebrewed system the GM made.

Also, replying to allow a bump, to find more potential players, but primarily a GM who would be interested in doing such a thing.

Fr this kind of game what would be the goal/endgame?  World domination? Or just surviving until 2020 when everything goes pear shaped?

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Maybe it is a set number of turns, and after that who is the biggest/strongest/most powerful wins?

Or when it starts losing interest and it ends naturally?

Or maybe it never does, though it then makes it hard for new players to get involved without being squashed (see all mobile games that build a town/space station).

Kevin Crawford's games (like Stars Without Number) with their faction system might be hackable to this. At least to give some groundwork for the kinds of things your faction/corp/city could produce and what a "turn" looks like.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Reminds me of a War game I had played once upon a time.... Some RPG elements, but mostly Empire Managing.  We had allot of different types.  I was a Orc/Troll/Dragon Alliance, with the strongest military in the world out the gate.  However, while my tech was on par with most other players (Iron Age), my economy was in shambles.  Spent most of my early turns invading neighbors for resources and trying to find new sources of food to feed my massive army.  Ended up with a few interesting events that happened.  Another Nation was some Techocracy (ww2 Era Tech), but no magical abilities what so ever, and a much SMALLER military.  Ran decently but it just faded away cause the GM stopped posting.

If I had the Time, I might be interested in trying my hand at running one again.  But at the moment, I will just keep this in mind, and check back once in a while.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

For those of you that don't know, I'm blind. I would be interested in running such a game, I'm finishing up my own system that involves a more narrative system like shadowrun or World of Darkness, which also utilizes a nation/ empire building for a science-fiction milieu.   I just need to add the finishing touches on a few things and find another storyteller that will help me with a few things, like adding players, and images for NPCs, and a few other things. I'll do must of the running, they'll just be there to be my eyes. I hope to have a game listed and running by at least the end of November or December, knock on wood. I'll check back in here at that time. It won't be fantasy based, but science-fiction, although there will be some  psyonic elements present, and the world will not be earth.  I'll post in this thread again once I get closer to the opening date, and again with the link. I just wanted to post this here for interested parties, and possibly picking up some kind person willing to help out a blind person in the near future.

Just checking to see if someone still wants to run a game like this?

If Blindguy is able to get a game started, great. But that doesn't mean I can't hope for someone else to also make one :)

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

I have been working on a Star Frontiers/Knight Hawks campaign scenario where each player runs a Megacorp.  They start with a set budget and can build ships for mining, freight or passenger liners as well as ships with weapons to either protect their assets or try to destroy or capture enemy assets.
The goal is to have the best balance sheet at the end of a set time period (a combination of the value of assets, resources and cash).
So players can explore different strategies or even multiple strategies to win, you can fight it out with the other Megacorps or try less violent means of accruing wealth.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

Hi,

Not sure if your still looking but I run a Theogenesis campaign where you play Gods, with your own realm and all of creation to explore and possibly conquer or expand your faith upon. Your a physical being so the danger of death is possible (yet different than with mortals due to the multiple lives aspect) and travelling realms is somewhat special as you can be in multiple realms as once (but have to worry about your physical being taking on more than it can handle in combat terms as multiple attacks from multiple realms at the same time could be devastating).

Anyhow, if your interested you can check out the campaign. Here is the link. Send me an RTJ stating you want to view the game and I can grant you LURKER status so you can see how some of the others are playing out their deities. It is a lot of SOLO game play but teaming up with others does happen and is also encouraged but most gods like to go at it with more solo work with only 1 or 2 aspects teaming up and working together (to avoid one god slowing down another).

Note that the game is still pretty early in its development stage. So joining now is not going to put you at a disadvantage as you can catch up in terms of your own realms development within a month or so of active game play.

The campaign has multiple smaller "story lines" as well as the gods own "Story lines" and then there are grander "campaigns" set up as well as the "grand Campaign" itself. So a very multi-faceted campaign.

link to another game

I know that some of you are talking of a TURN BASED system. This is more open ended with the rules being set more on the GODS than on the building of the realm itself etc etc. So development is based on decisions and less on "numbers" although I do run some numbers in the back ground. Goal was to keep this game style light on the player-needed-calculations.

Anyhow, putting it out here in case this type of campaign would fit what your looking for.

@CaptainHellrazor - That very much sounds like my type of thing! Please let me know when you get it made.

@Myrddin Emyr - Unfortunately, your game isn't what I'm looking for, but might be right for others. Best of luck with it :)

Giving it a nudge, as I didn't see much of a need whilst it was still on the first page.

There's potential GM's who have replied, and players for when a game turns up.

If everything I have posted sounds like the type of thing you would like to run, please speak up.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

The kind of game I would like to run would be a long term commitment due to the complexity of the game and at this point in time I only know perhaps 2 other players that would be interested which is not enough to justify the work required to finish development. I would want probably 4 to 6 players to make it worthwhile.

Re: Turn based empire / settlement builder?

@Nu_Fenix: I've been running a game vaguely along these lines for some years (of real time) now. The concept is historical fantasy set in Iron-Age Britain in the first century BC. It is a player-vs-player game using D&D 3.5 and the Fields of Blood supplement (with rules for mass battles and, more importantly, realm management), with five petty warlords (all players) vying for supremacy over the shared tribal land while forces both within (street-gangs of sorcerer-bandits) and without (the Roman legions under Caesar just across the Channel in Gaul) threaten their very way of life. It's been a fairly slow-moving grind at times, but has continued to truck on, and we're about to enter our second winter.

As it happens, we seem to be, er, about to have an opening in the ranks. Despite the "lateness of the hour", there's no reason to be concerned about joining at this stage - there have been relatively few long-term territorial changes so far and you would be taking over an existing clan holding from a defeated warlord (to be clear, it is only the warlord himself, not the realm or its standing army, that have been defeated at this point), rather than struggling to build from scratch against much more well-established rivals.

Here's the link so you can take a bit of a closer look if this sounds at all appealing: link to another game

Sorry for the delay ChaosCircle, I only just saw this.

It looks very intriguing. I get a Babylon 5 vibe from it, strangely. I'd be up for trying it out, as it looks like it has lots of flexibility with what players can do, yet in a firm ruleset.

I'd be interested in playing. Had another look through the shared rules a few days ago. The concept of having a fleet or two as "peacekeepers" with the other players as megacorps colonials... sweet!!

Since I hadn't heard from you I started to throw together something of my own, but I'll work on it and flesh it out more since there's no hurry now.
