Anyone planning a 5e game in the style of Game of Thrones?

Now, it's not exactly Game of Thrones that I'm looking for, but that property certainly conveys the general genre and themes I'm going for. I'm a perpetual DM, with two games funning concurrently, who's on the search for something tantalizing to unwind with. Ideally in 5e, as that's just the easiest system for me to use (with fantasy races, because they're comfortable).

We write what we want to read, it's said, and the same is true of the games we run. I happen to make moody/bleak character-centric games that prioritize roleplay, but also have broad-spanning plot lines that compound with those more personal stories. Sort of like Game of Thrones before it killed itself, where the main draw of the tale is its characters and their spiralling interplay that builds and collapses, all while a wider, more sinister plot churns in the gloaming, giving a sense of dread that curdles the drama and gives weight to personal choices and priorities. I also appreciate political machinations, moral dilemmas, and underlying mysteries, in addition to just good old-fashioned character development and the odd wholesome moment.

The one trait I'm not looking to mimic, however, is a punishing game with constant character death: I like it as a threat, lingering in the background, but it should ideally be rare, at least for what I'm looking for. To paraphrase something I wholeheartedly agree with, death is the least interesting thing you can do to a character.

To wit, is anyone in the throes of something like this? Just throwing a few feelers out there, to taste the air.

Ideally LGBTQ+ friendly!

What level range are you looking for?

And would you want to be one of the nobles/big players, or someone who's caught in the machinations of it all?

I would certainly be happy to join in on such a game.

Any level range is fine with me, same for the social status. I would leave both of them more in the hands of the GM, but I would enjoy it either way.

so, a few questions for clarity?

is this intended to be an adult game, or would a mature rating suffice?

you asked for LBGTQ+ friendly, is that supposed to matter to the roleplay or has someone been critical of you because of your lifestyle. report those people, but please avoid LBGTQ+ roleplay for the sake of something you perceive as merely fetish-like or sexually indulgent. that is cringe-like in the other direction.

as for nobility, I would say that would be included with an appropriate background. the same goes for those not of noble birth. and everything about a character's story would be part of the world setting.

you wanted fantasy races. do you mean those in the PHB, or all the ones that have been published as PC races thus far. i have to say, i would limit players to the PC races listed in the PHB. going through the motions to constantly track down a race to check up one yet another racial ability gets tedious for an online game. same would go for classes, subclasses, and feats.

Player's handbook, DMG, monster manual, toshia's cauldron, xanathar's guide.....and that's it. just to keep things on an even keel and not require me to constantly be check sources for little things all the time. and some of that stuff is too wierd. i am a grognard, i was playing D&D as a kid in the early 80s, some of the stuff out now ruins my sense immersion, sorry.

i would like to start at level 3, top notch normal but before you become known for your heroic/legendary/suicidal/miraculous/insert next adjective feats of daring do.

magic would be normal, of course, but magic items and their creation would not. so, artificers may feel prison raped as a class. the time and investment required would be increased drastically to create magic items. purchasing them would be increased substantially as well. not to limit magic items, but to make them far more significant in the setting. kind of like Valerian steel.

the setting would be in one i create, you would all need to be from a part of the land and not from some other place or plane, and your backgrounds and stories would be worked out of the information for the setting.

my biggest worry is commitment. everyone is always like 'oh, i'll be there for sure' and then ghost the game within two weeks. it takes a dozen or more players to keep six. i know, i have half a dozen games running, some for years now. so, please understand that three posts a week is a solid thing to me. if you don't keep up i'll just shoot you a PM telling you that you are out and few hours later i'll delete you.

that rank stated, i would like a party of four to six players.

if you are seeking a role play intensive game would you be will play with more hardcore, i.e. role play centric, rules?

Well, good to see more than one person is interested in the idea enough to run it.

Good points and questions, JAM2019.

To touch on the LBGTQ+ question, by default, everyone has to be 'friendly'.  Any sort of harrassment or worse is against the rules, and it's likely such 'unfriendly' people will be banned in short order.  It should be a non-issue.

If I run a game, I'd be up to allowing a bit of a range of levels, but probably no higher than 5th.

Another question I have is, how would you like to see factions set up?  If you want to be a noble of some kind, you'd have some sort of family, and thus, some support others might not.  Factions could be part of a 'mini-game' of sorts, to allow for more player involvement in how the background and foreground stories evolve.  Maybe your character (or faction) pushes for war, so that changes what's going on in your 'stomping grounds'.  Players could found their own factions (adventuring party, guild of some kind, etc), for example, and affect things on a (somewhat) macro scale.

Open to more ideas.

i would use the tried and true method of handling factions; is the faction in question friendly, neutral, or antagonistic to the PC in question. considering factions range from guilds, leagues, families, courts, companies, armies, gangs, etc. it is easier to simply note a character's relationship with a particular group of people in the game world.

it also creates issues where loyalties are tested, grudges are formed, and secrets are fundamental to many story lines.
