Wuxia: Flying Swordsmen or D&D?

I'm very much in the mood for Chinese inspired fantasy martial arts adventuring and I'm looking for a GM willing to run a Wuxia game.

I have a couple of systems I'm interested in. The first and the one I'd be most excited about is the free RPG Flying Swordsmen (available here: http://lordgwydion.blogspot.co...g-swordsmen-rpg.html) It is based on OSR rules and looks a lot of fun and I'd love to try it out.

The second system is regular D&D 5e with a focus on East Asian fantasy. I'd certainly be happy to play a Monk (or even a Rogue) in the right setting.

So... any interested DM or players? :)

I'm too busy to run a game of Flying Swordsmen but if someone else does, I would love to get in on it...if it didn't freak them out!

Well that's another player at least - and the author no less! :D

It is odd, but I wrote the game I'd like to play. Never got to play Dragon Fist (which I cloned), never got to play Flying Swordsmen. Always had to run it.

I'd consider running it myself except my GM-Fu is pretty weak and I want to be a player. :)

Hmm. Let me read over the rules. I'm not sure I'll have time to run a game right now, but depending on the complexity of the system, I'll see what I can manage once I've familiarised myself with it.

It sounds like fun, and right in my wheelhouse, especially at the moment as my 1e OA game gets off the ground!

Okay, I've read over the rules. That all looks very straightforward and easy to use, with more than enough new and interesting elements to keep things fun and challenging. Very well laid-out book as well, with some great GM resources included. I tip my hat to you, sir.

Do you guys have any preferences for setting and theme? I've had an idea in the back of my head for some time that I'd love to do a military/politics-oriented mock-up of the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, following the collapse of the Han dynasty, a la the Dynasty Warriors games. This system looks perfect for that.

Looks like that political setup could still be made to work in the entertaining campaign setting provided (rather than in actual China), but Lord Gwydion, since we'll be using your rules, I'd like to lean on your input there, as I think it's only fair that I run the sort of game you'd like!

Let me know what you'd both like to do and let's see if we can move this forward.

Yay! :)

I admit my knowledge of Chinese history comes mostly from movies and some television so I'm generally okay with either the setting as is in the book or another (historical-fantasy China, Kara-Tur, another homebrew world...) so long as it offers plenty of scope for diverse adventure and fantasy!

Thank you very much. I really appreciate it.

As for the setting, what I put in the book is pretty sparse, so you'd need to flesh it out a lot. I'm happy to make suggestions, but my idea writing the book was that each referee would make the setting their own. Feel free to fill in the blanks as you wish, if you go with Zhongyang Dalu.

I'm also fine if we go with fantasy actual China as the setting. Three Kingdoms era is ripe for adventure.

Great! Give me a few days to get a game-template organised and everything set up and then I'll summon ye thence.

I'll put up an ad at that point too, since this sounds like the sort of game where more players is preferable, but let me know if either of you would prefer to keep the group small, perhaps even just the two of you.

Sounds good! :)

I'd be happy with a normal sized group of player characters, like four to six- a lot of the fun is a diverse group interacting with each other.

I've run it with 2-3 players, depending on schedules, but it works best IMO with a few more. It is based on older D&D after all.

And we're up and running. I've added you both to the game already.
