Traveller?

I've been feeling an urge to play some good old fashioned space opera and I recently bought the Mongoose 2nd edition version of Traveller. It's one of those games I've heard about for years but never had the chance to actually play.

Any GM interested in running a Traveller game? I'd especially like to play in a free trader style game but I'd be happy to hear other options - I just want to get out and about into the galaxy! :)

I cut my teeth on original Traveller . If a game comes up, please keep me in mind.

I'd definitely be up for playing this game. I've heard tons about it but never got the chance to play. Can you really die during character creation? Wild times.

In classic traveler death was a frequent occurrence in character generation. In mongoose you are merely badly injured.

Traveller?

I've had a MT2e game brewing in the background for a while now. It's just about ready to go and I've been re-enjoying a bit of Mass Effect recently, so I'm in the right frame of mind to dive into a space-game. I was going to launch close to the end of the year, but I can probably bring that forward if there's some clear interest in the scenario now.

It's a rather nonstandard setup in which all characters will be members of the Zhodani military, aboard a massive colonial fleet. The focus will initially be mostly on military operations and exploration. The setting is also unusual in that it will incorporate some fantasy elements, including concepts borrowed from novels (chiefly the works of Raymond E. Feist) and from other games and media. A story/adventure arc has been laid out, within which the characters will have a huge amount of freedom to do what they want in the situations they are presented with, but there are clearly defined start- and end-points to the campaign, which I nevertheless expect to keep a group busy for several years of RPoL play. The tone will be quite dark (mature rated, not adult) and will include survival-game elements as the characters struggle on into the unknown, facing terrifying challenges that are unprecedented in the history of the Zhodani.

I realise it's no casual romp in a free trader, but does that sound like it might be of interest?

Oof... that sounds an impressive game theblacksorcerer but I have to admit it's not my personal cup of tea. I'm very much looking for more of an independents style of game - free traders, smugglers, pirates even slumming nobles and drifters that kind of thing - and being military types doesn't appeal at all sorry. :(

All good. I suppose I'd also be willing to run a fast-and-loose free-trader game in a vaguely Firefly-type style (though not set specifically in that milieu, merely inspired by it), since that sort of thing doesn't require much of my bandwidth and we seem to have a few people expressing interest here. Did you have any particular campaign-concepts in mind beyond the run-of-the-mill trading, smuggling, light piracy, etc., or is that scum-of-the-universe business enough for you to sink your teeth into for a start?

In reply to theblacksorcerer (msg # 7):

Thanks! I do rather like the 'little bit of everything to pay the bills' sort of approach but I'd be fairly flexible so long as we are working for ourselves (or at least working for contract like mercenaries or privateers.) Private detectives, Star Wars-style bounty hunters, xenoarchaelogists (Indiana Jones in space...), travelling entertainers... It is a big universe and i want a chance to check it out. :)

I also like space stations and spaceports so I'd probably favour a game with plenty of those as against pure exploration even if exploration can be fun.

That all sounds perfectly manageable. All very readily-available Traveller-fodder. I'll start throwing together some ideas for setting that fits the concept well (it's a big universe, as you say) and put up a game either tomorrow or the day after.

I'll drop the link to the game here before I put up a general ad, so watch this space (opera)...
