Whimsical D&D (3.5) ideas

In reply to GrizzlyBear91 (msg # 5):

I'd caution against that because of the slow rate of advancement in PbP games. In fact, I'm of the opinion that a PbP game should never start below level 3 or so just because of how unfun it is to be at level 1 for a long period of time, something that's pretty inevitable in a PbP game. Heck, I've gone whole years without leveling up in some PbP games, and suffice to say I'd be pretty unhappy in that sort of situation at level 1.

Normally I would agree with you, but it's pretty tantamount to the whole foundation of the game that we're inexperienced newbies. Being Gestalt will add a bit of a power boost too, and we can always boost advancement later if it becomes a problem. They become pretty strong pretty quickly in the comic, after all.

In reply to GrizzlyBear91 (msg # 9):

It would pretty much have to be a guaranteed level up after a certain amount of IRL time for that to solve it honestly. It's kind of dull being 1st level due to how one-dimensional everything is at that point, though gestalt does help a little bit there (my brain must have glossed over that lol)

I want in for the monster idea. How monstruous should/could we be?

Like I said, I want to Gestalt a monster race into the other side of a build. We can talk about specifics in the game, this thread is not for character creation after all.

Bump! We clearly have several people interested in playing the Goblins game, but have as of yet not found a GM.

GrizzlyBear91:
My idea would be a group of monster races, probably using Savage Species progressions, with a character class gestalted on the other side.

Just stressing here... OP wanted a monster group, not necessarily goblins.

Yes, I'm not fussy on exactly what you're playing as long as it isn't normally a PC race. We can be a band of traveling monsters from different places, the specifics don't really matter. The theme is taken from the Goblins comic, hence the name.

I could see playing a big, dumb, but lovable, Ogre.

That might be funny and fun. With all my lil' Goblin friends running around! :)

It's an interesting concept.  I have never read or heard of the comics and my head spins every time I see/hear the word gestalt (I can never remember the actual meaning of the word and everyone seems to have their own version of what it means).  But flipping the script (like making Neegan the good guy and Rick the bad guy) could be lots of fun.

What monster types do you think would be appropriate for such a game?  As a potential DM I would think goblins and kobolds, potentially orcs?  But nothing with more than 1HD (PC Ogres would unbalance the game straight away IMHO).  I would also probably have some racial limitations, just like demi-humans have on the 'other side'.

On the downside, I am a 1st edition kinda guy, I know nothing about the inferior (later editions) versions of the game so I am probably not the kind of DM you are looking for.

OP wanted a game where we could play things outside the PC races. A lot of people talked about goblins, but they are not necessary. I would limit it, though, to +4 or +3 in "monster class". So we could have half dragons orcs, but not a Half Dragon Hydra. But this is something for the GM to decide.

Would you mind having a co-GM that would translate your ideas to 3.5 rules?

In reply to CaptainHellrazor (msg # 20):

Yeah, sorry, I'm pretty set on 3.5. If you don't know much about it, it probably won't work out well, unless Kark (or someone else of course) can help you with the system and you basically just deal with the storyline.

I like the concept.  The first thing that jumped into my head was a reverse version of Keep in the Borderlands where the humanoid players could fight off parties of adventurers and try to unite the various tribes in the caves to attack the Keep :)  But there are so many other options as well, unfortunately like I said I'm old school so 3.5 is not gonna work for me, don't wanna learn a new system to run a game.  I hope you can find someone who will run your game, sounds like a hoor :)

You know what, I'm willing to throw down the hat, that names now HAVE a hat to be thrown in.

I have two caveats. This is silly fun, but serious work. Please respect my time, even in character, don't use your character to insult me as a GM. I don't think anyone will! If you, or your character does, you're out. That 4th wall will break for those that break it, and it will leave them outside...the game.

Second caveat is that you not nitpick rules. This is silly fun. If I say "Mmmm. no" let's duke it out in no more than six posts. If you're late to the "fight" I'm gonna have to just say, you didn't beat us to the punch.

That's it.

I'll set up the game ASAP. Just not today. I could really use a "straight from the MM" book, and even...heheh...this is great! I will DEFINITELY run this. I don't know who will stay, but I like this. I REALLY like this. I hope Grizzly will have fun. I'd like to try. It's okay if not. I have a really stone brained "never break" rule, that would be perfect to break for this campaign..

So I will link to a game ASAP. I have no board...assigned. I will assign one ASAP. Just...probably not for another week or two. Oh! I'm a slow poster. If that matters. I probably can't run most combats in a RL week. If that's a dealbreaker for Grizzly....I'll just go rogue on this idea. I hope it isn't though. I think this'll be fun. For someone. Besides me.

Just popping in to say I'm excited to get this started whenever you're ready. I was already aware that V wanted to throw his hat in (from talking with him in another game) so I'm not entirely surprised by this message.

Bumping because V hasn't started the game yet (not that I'm saying he won't of course) and it's never a bad idea to have a backup. Plus maybe some of the people who were initially interested will see this.

Ive only recently returned to rpol. I definitely also want to throw my name in as a possible plate. Though Im late to the party and expect only to be picked if one of the original 4 is no longer in the running.

Been a long time fan of the goblins comic, though I havent read it in a while.
