Jake Ward:
I'm happy for Ward to come along, but it's probably best for him to be asked instead of told to come along IC - perhaps along the lines of employment as opposed being shanghaied.  There's a different standard of care that comes with one vs. the other.  ;)

OK, I'll try and cover that off with both Ward and Nassir when the rifle squad is finalised.

In reply to Ferro (msg # 3):

When Kessler assigned people to the Humvee I was going on the basis that I didn't know how fit Rodriguez was (and no one had given me any feedback beforehand so I had to wing it).

If you all want to swap Rodriguez for Babicevs - i.e. Rodriguez rides in the Humvee as gunner and Babicevs rides in the BTR - that's fine with me, it means that Rae's characters are split up so less chance of him potentially talking to himself.

Just need someone to suggest it IC and you can all assume Kessler will ok it.

I just realized I mistook who was going where (Varis and Jose). That's my fault.

I definitely don't mind who goes in the vehicle, Ferro is just securing a gunner. So don't matter to me.

It's been a few days with no posts so I've assumed all prep for your characters is done and I moved things on.

I know it would have been better to jump forward to actually inside the sub & tent, but I've run out of time tonight, so I'll leave it here. I'll have the next turn up real soon though.

witch_hunter007, I didn't mention it, but consider Reza fed and his pack dropped off somewhere safe.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what class of submarine we're looking at? (I promise that I won't use this meta knowledge- I'm just trying to visualize it).

Looking back at the engagement at The Twins (ch. 17), it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of info available on the submarine. Some descriptors and what the unit would know is that:
  • "It's a fucking big submarine."
  • That it has numerous welds from prior damage and is rusting in places above the waterline.
  • At the Twins there were two large structures attached to the side of the sub. These could either be 10k fuel tanks, or floatation devices/ballasts to keep the sub afloat.
  • Lastly, and I thought this was interesting, was that a previous prisoner mentioned a home port of Conarky. He possibly could have meant Conakry, the capital of Guinea, in west Africa.

I’m pretty certain the reference to Conakry does refer to Guinea.

We know its nuclear powered, right? That narrows it down, a bit. Assuming it is nuclear-powered, its either a SSBN, SSGN, or SSN.

Soviet SSBNs (the kind that carry nuclear ballistic missiles) are super distinctive. The two major classes used during the late Cold War period are the Deltas and the Typhoons. The Deltas have a very distinct hump behind the conning tower. The Typhoons, on the other hand, have no hump, but are the widest sub class in the world.

An SSN is an attack submarine- they're multipurpose boats designed to hunt and kill other subs, and surface vessels. Many have limited land attack capabilities as well.

Size-wise, Soviet SSGNs (the kind that carry surface/land attack cruise missiles) are typically fall somewhere between an SSBN and an SSN. The Oscar class is pretty huge- long, and broad in the beam. The Charlie class doesn't look much different than its SSN contemporaries.

If whatever type of sub Nowak skippers was indeed based in Conakry at some point, that would make it more likely that it is an SSN.

I hope that wasn't too pedantic. I didn't want to just drop acronyms and assume everyone here knows what they mean.

It's an old November class attack sub. I envisioned those older & noisier boats being used to interdict shipping in more remote areas where they might stand a better chance than say, the sea-lanes between North America and Europe. This one operated in the South Atlantic mostly, far from NATO home waters. IRL the Soviets based a few aircraft in Conarky during the Cold War. In the game history it was a friendly port where the sub basically sheltered after the nuclear exchange for a long time, until finally deciding, with much disagreement, on heading home - only to see the sailors try to head back to Africa (or maybe Cuba, somewhere warm) before mechanical trouble resulted in them only get so far as The Twins.

I borrowed bits from Last Sub obviously, turning it from an American to a Soviet sub.

OOC: Please clarify the Humvee's passengers (including a seat for Nowak that was probably occupied by someone) and the Krok (which can have up to 6 of Nowak's bodyguards)

OK, so we've got

Humvee
Ferro - driver
Kessler - front passenger
Voight - guns
Babicevs / Nowak - rear passengers God help Nowak

BTR
Everyone else. 2 people in air guard hatches, everyone else riding on top like tank desant (my limited research would suggest this is an unofficial SOP - honestly, you'll thank me if the BTR gets hit by an RPG).

@Witchhunter, I've got no problem with Nassir taking over as BTR driver after this op but I think it would be stretching things for Kessler to swap out Andropov for someone whose abilities are as yet unproven / undemonstrated midway through a fairly crucial op.

Hope that makes sense.
