Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Xynthia watched the police cruiser approach carefully and smiled.

"I knew you'd come for me..." She whispered.

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Geoff stopped the squad car and got out, "Xynthia, thank God you're alive... get in the car quickly and we'll get you back to the others as soon as I find out if Fort Monroe is a safe haven or a death trap."

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Allan quickly got out of the car. "Xynthia?" He started to move toward her, and then stopped. "How..." All the color had drained from his face, and he had the expression of someone who had just seen a ghost. Allan's rifle was pointed down, but his grip on it tightened.

Xynthia smiled gently at Allan: "I'm not dead yet, honey... Mommy knows I wouldn't be useful to her if I were. She needs your help, too."

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Geoff pulled the Remington 870 that he had liberated from the gunshop and slung a bandoleer of fat red cartridges around his chest. He held the shotgun at high port and kept a careful watch as the Reverend headed toward his wife. When he heard Xynthia's enigmatic suggestion his mind started to race. Maybe this would allow them to determine the source of just what was going on.

He gripped the gun tightly, gaining comfort from its solidity although he seriously doubted that he'd be able to solve whatever conundrum was unreeling at their feet with firepower.

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Xynthia sighed: "She planned this for a long time, as long as Daddy planned the Rising. We are not the only ones, but she says we are her best bet."

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Worried that he might be putting two and two together and making five, Geoff just stood still and kept watch.

"Her best bet to do what?" Allan stopped in front of his wife and looked into her eyes. "Can she stop this?" His left hand reached out and gently touched the side of Xynthia's face. "If we help her, will she... let you go?"

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Xynthia raised a hand to stroke her husband's cheek: "We can't have it both ways... She needs us to stop daddy, and if we want to do that I will need more of her gifts. You know what they say: with great power comes great insanity."

Her irises switched from their normal ice blue to deep blue, then dark blue, then black. Then she blinked and she was back to normal.

Re: The Straight And Narrow Path

Geoff looked around nervously, "There's zombies coming."

"We'd better do something soon," he wasn't envious of the Reverend's choice between trying to save the world and seeing his wife drop off the edge or keeping his wife sane and let the world go to hell, "I think we've got serious company coming."

Allan grabbed Xynthia's hand and tried to pull her with him as he quickly made his way back toward the car. He stopped near Geoff and readied his rifle. "Run or fight?" he asked the officer.

Xynthia thought for a moment: "There is nowhere to run. The road behind you is filling with Reborn as we speak. They will not touch me, but I cannot hold them all off."

Xynthia bit her lower lip: "If... If I Bless the car, and you hide in there, they will leave you alone. But I'm not sure what the effects of spending a long time inside it may be..."

Xynthia shook her head: "My Blessing doesn't repel them, it just kinda makes you fade in the background. If you do something interesting, they will notice you. Allan's Blessing, will keep the small ones away, but the big ones will all come after you."

Geoff looked around and said, "OK, if we use our guns to thin out the human looking ones then we might be able to use your Blessings to get out of here, that or we run on foot. Any comments?"

Xynthia smiled at her husband: "My knight in a shining armor... But what if Geoff runs into a pack of Reborn? I think we should stay together. If we try to go back, we will run into at least two groups of them that I can sense, and there may be more beyond them. If we go forward, I might get us into the fort, but then we will be surrounded."
