Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

19th-25th Day of Ascending Water, RY 768
En route

The Hammerhead's voyage has proven to be largely uneventful. The best kind of voyage--for those who prefer caution to adventure.

The crew has ample time to settle down from the days spent in Seahaven, which for the ex-corsairs were rather tense and trying. They have plenty of vitriol to say about First Captain Buruku in particular, and without the Wavecrest Guard near, their tongues are rather loose with it. Still, they appear to be in good spirits, particularly with the measure of rum Black Reed distributes to them now and then. The only exception is Hobnail, but Hobnail has been a nervous man for as long as the crew remembers, anyway.

Tethia spends a good amount of time alone, wandering the ship's corridors or gazing out to sea. She also spends some time with the implosion bow, familiarizing herself with its function. She does not speak of Kossuth at all, though apparently she has reclaimed some of his belongings for her quarters.

The last transmission the Hammerhead has gotten from the Jadira was on the 22nd. They were entering a treacherous island chain, they said, a misty region known as 'Nevermoor'. No word has come since.

OOC: You've had nearly a week of journey so if you did anything important then, post it now before I move on.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Soon after setting sail away from Abalone, Darel approached Treon with the possibility of summoning sorcerous adjuncts to their forces. The dreaded eristrufa could be bound to the sorcerer's will and actually of assistance in naval action. The beauteous wasps, the agatae, were also of use in scouting and transportation. And finally, the stomach bottle bugs, the repulsive sesseljae, aside from their disturbing appetites for wastes, were superlative surgeons.

In the first three nights after departure, Darel, covered at the critical time of the contest of wills by Treon, managed to easily bind an agata, but the eristrufa and the sesselja proved far more tiring, yet in the end the sorcerer's will prevailed, earning him three new demonic servants to be used to further the cause of the Cobalt Alliance.

Darel spent most of the remaining time in his cabin, meditating and recollecting as much data as he could on their destination, when he was not relaying the Dryad's message to Treon.

[OOC: in case there needs to be rolls regarding knowledge:

23:57, Today: Darel Arwan rolled 1 success using 6d10 with the White Wolf Exalted system with a target of 7 with rolls of 4,2,9,5,3,3. Int+Lore.

Meh, I guess I should send Kathleen away, she must be distracting me too much ;)]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

As they had left Seahaven, on the first night, Treon had called all together--officers and crew--for a small meal, for luck for the voyage ahead and in part, to reward for the lack of trouble caused despite their less than ideal reception in the port they had just left.

Over the following days, Treon had continued his efforts to know both his crew and his ship.  He never pressed too much, was quite willing to back off, but on the other hand he seemed filled with a genuine desire to know.  Darel and Tethia were also included in this, and he was in turn willing to answer some of the questions about his past, though he was definitely vague about just why he was so far out here.  Hobnail was an special focus of his efforts, pressing less with him than with the others, instead trying to relax the man in his presence enough that someday soon, he would be happy to talk.

When he isn't talking with the crew, or navigating, or gazing out to the East, Treon spends some time meditating on the weather, tasting the air and other things normally alien to his Aspect until he can tell what every subtle flavour means for the coming day.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Darel recalls very little of the small island of Nkiru. He knows that it is one of the westernmost islands still included as part of the Wavecrest nation. It is divided roughly into an eastern and western portion. The eastern side is more 'civilized', settled down, while the western people are more tribal in nature, full of superstitions and strange stories of Wyld and deep sea creatures. [Private to Darel Arwan: Hehe, it's all right. You'll have other opportunities to roll. And Kathleen may be useful! Though--were you ever going to summon other demons?]

Treon makes good progress with the men, though not all of them are so open with their pasts, or used to being social. By now he knows all of them by name, besides the dark-skinned man who serves as bosun, Black Reed, and the jittery but sharp-eyed lookout, Hobnail. Balio, Beetle, Jarvan, Ormi, and Tonsar are the strongmen. Crowfoot, Nine-Fingers and Sang are the nimblest, climbing topsail with ease, or squirming into tight spaces for repairs. Hailstorm and Zir are the best bowmen, equally suited to man the sailcutters.

Then there is Tethia. Of all of them, she is the most direct when it comes to asking Treon about his past. Of her own she says that she was not always a woman of the sea, that she was once an Easterner. She spoke of the ugliness of war and of people, though was not ready yet to be more than vague, either.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

26th Day of Ascending Water, RY 768
Dawn

Early the next day, Hobnail comes down from the crow's nest, scurrying about to find the Captain. "Land sighted s-sir," he says immediately upon finding Treon (or after pacing incessantly near his cabin if he's not yet awake).

The rest of the ship awakes with that knowledge passed on from crew member to crew member. With the dawn at their backs, the sailors on the Hammerhead look on toward the small island growing in the distance. It's not even close to as massive as the Abalone landmass, and a good portion of the island is devoted to sugar plantations, while the coast harbors tens of fisher and divers' boats. The port is not even a town, but a village with thatch-roofed huts, though there are a handful of larger, sturdier buildings among them.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Treon had not been pressing too hard with his questions, since it would hardly be fair to press too much when he was not willing to be similarly forthcoming.  He's glad though that he seems to have inherited a good cross-section of the original crew of the Hammerhead, with people to fill all the roles needed on a ship.  He isn't evasive of Tethia's questions, so much as shading his answers to before, or after, his departure from the Realm.

Treon had awoken only slightly after Hobnail had started his pacing, tending to rise early and sleep late most days.  "Thank you, Hobnail," he says with a nod.

As the crew breakfasts, one of the communal times on the vessel, Treon announces his plan.  "I have mind to put in at the port, take on some fresh water--although we're not running low--and to ask if they know anything of the fate of the expedition we have come to investigate.  I don't plan to stay here overlong, although it is possible we will end up staying overnight," though his voice made that sound unlikely.  He glanced up to the mast to make sure the Cobalt's flag was flying proud, glancing around for questions or comments from any of the assembled crew.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"Your plan is sound," replies Black Reed as Treon announces the plan. "We can never be too sure with supplies, and the crew may rest easier among island natives than cityfolk. Cities do tend to remember... your past transgressions." The dark man's brows crease deeply at those words.

"Better not let them rest TOO well," Tethia remarks. Possibly referring to the crewmen developing an appetite for bedding island girls. "I have no complaints, though," she adds with a sharp nod.

The sun rises with the Hammerhead's arrival, setting the sea behind them awash in gold. Nkiru islanders have already begun to congregate at the shore, curious about the newcomers. They don't seem to have a regular coast guard, and the walls around the village serve more as delineations than any sort of fortified protection. Clearly they are used to peace, protected by the fact their island has had no particular significance or resource to make it appealing for visitors.

Until now, anyway. The discovery of Black Rock Chasm was still a recent one, but explorers and savants have already taken note, undoubtedly drawing traffic toward the humble port.

As the dock looms closer, the Hammerhead crew sees some of the local fishermen forming up -- either to help or to make a show of force, it's difficult to tell. Somewhat further behind is an entourage of a half-dozen spearmen and maidens in dyed cloth saris, surrounding a stout, elderly matron in ceremonial headdress. The maidens balance woven baskets between them that appear to be filled to the brim.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Treon nods in response to the three who replied, glad he had their agreement at least.  He gave another look over the gathered crew, to see if others would speak up and then when it becomes apparent that there are none, he goes back to eating.

There was no need to do anything with the weaponry aboard ship, all of them covered in tarpaulins to protect against any unexpected weather, so they would not be sailing as a ship immediately armed for conflict.  Of course, should they be needed, it would be the work of seconds to cut traces and reveal them.

He directs the crew to slow the Hammerhead as she approaches, being sure to align himself with the centre of the port opening, wanting to be sure of getting the deepest water.  Not wanting to sail into their harbour unguided though, he waits until the small floatila has arranged itself and travelled out to reach them.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Once the elder and her entourage board, the flotilla is rowed toward the Hammerhead by the strong, able arms of the fishermen. It appears they wish the Hammerhead to stop; assuming the larger vessel complies, the elder's ceremonial vessel halts as well, so that the two are facing one another.

The older woman raises a hand, requiring silence. She utters something... too soft for anyone on Treon and Darel's vessel to hear easily. A strong-voiced maiden echoes the elder, so that all can know her words:

"Nkiru of the Sunset welcomes you, great and honored visitors." The words are fortunately in Seatongue... with a distinctive islander accent, but Seatongue nonetheless.

"I --" and the elder gestures to herself, though it is the maiden who speaks "-- am Elder Maha-suma. As of late we have had many guests, and are honored to be blessed by the presence of individuals of your caliber."

"May we inquire upon your visit to our humble island?"

Treon had ordered the Hammerhead to stop, at least as well as a vessel of her size could stop when that had been made clear to them.

"Thank you for your greeting, Elder Maha-Suma," Treon says, his voice easily loud enough to carry over the water.

"I am Treon Fireblade and this is my ship, the Hammerhead" he said, with a gesture that encompassed the crew.  "We would like to put to port for a short while to take on supplies, mainly."

"Perhaps also we would like to speak with you about some of your other guests," he concludes, watching for their reactions to his statements.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The fishermen's poles hold the flotilla still while the maidens rest their burdens on the deck. The spearmen do not hold their weapons in an overtly hostile manner, but still keep them close and ready. [Private to Darel Arwan: Nothing seems outwardly amiss. You are pretty certain the baskets the women carry hold gifts of tribute: fruit and grains, likely. The men, you notice, discreetly carry blowguns with their belt knives. (BTW, next time you and your neomah roll the same dice pool, might want to do teamwork with her? She would add a die to your roll, then.)]

The maiden starts to whisper into the matron's ear, but Elder Maha-suma waves her off impatiently and begins to speak. Sentence by sentence, the young woman conveys her words: "Certainly we would be happy to accommodate you, Captain Fireblade, and your crew as well. We've little to offer, but will share with you what we have." At her direction, the women with the baskets bring forward their burdens, revealing baskets of island fruits, rice and flour. Treon's crewmen let out a general murmur of approval, both at the offered food and the women themselves.

"We will speak further of guests and other matters, if you would join me at my residence once you are settled in for the day." The fishermen begin to row backward now, guiding the Hammerhead toward the harbor.

[Private to Cathak Garel Treon: You get the feeling that these people do not want your ship to stay very long. They are being kind and generous, but it's less out of respect than it is out of a hope you'll leave quickly.]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"On behalf of my crew and the Cobalt Alliance I accept your offered gifts.  They are most definitely appreciated," he makes a grateful bow to the matron, before he straightened.  "It would be my pleasure to join you at your residence later," he says with a nod.

Then, the audience apparently concluded for the moment, he begins to shout out the orders needed to bring the Hammerhead into port, careful to stick to the fringe of the port, where the water is deeper and there is more room to manoeuvre.

That accomplished, his voice drops to address those close by him.  "Darel, once we have settled, I would appreciate it if you would accompany me to the Elder's residence.  You are trained as a diplomat, no?  This would seem to be your forte."

"Tethia, Black Reed," he nodded to the pair.  "I want one of you to remain with the Hammerhead whilst we are away and the other to look into water barrels.  Everyone else, I plan to leave here on the morning tide, so whilst I'm not going to keep you on here, don't stray too far.  And don't cut too loose, please.  Remember, we're here under Cobalt colours, so it's no longer just the ship you'd be affecting."

"Any questions?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The cheers from before are converted into a disappointed "awwww..." when Treon mentions leaving with the tide.

"I will stay, Captain, lady." Far be it from Black Reed to keep Tethia from moving freely about the island. She was not his captain, but he still considers her a person of authority and power, given her Terrestrial birthright. "Please be careful."

Tethia nods quietly. She does not need to be told anything twice. The Water Aspect has her longbow slung across her back and watches the islander entourage with cool mistrust as they guide the Hammerhead to shore. (Of course, that is likely her most common expression, so it's not unusual... for her.)

"So the rest of us can have a bit o' shore leave, yeah?" Sang pipes up, speaking for the rest of the crew. The other men look expectantly to their captain, obviously excited to partake in what the island has to offer.

The Hammerhead is given leeway to dock as the islanders and their matron disembark. Elder Maha-suma utters some orders to her people and several of them break away, moving further inland on their tasks. The rest arrange the offered barrels on the pier for the Hammerhead captain and crew to inspect.

[Private to Darel Arwan: What will you have your demons do? I know Kathleen will follow you (as she should, since she'd get Limit for being idle). The others are at the moment dematerialized, but if you have any special orders, let 'em know.]

The agata, I think I will have her flying above the village in case I need an emergency lift.

Treon nods his acceptance of the choice made between Black Reed and Tethia.  He then turns to the assembled crew.

"Yes, a bit of shore leave once everything is tidied away on here," he says with a nod, and a smile.  "As long as you remember that we are leaving with the tide tomorrow," he says, with a stern look that conveys more than just a need for caution over that, but a reminder of who they are sailing with now.

"Now, lets go and see what they have offered us, and then on to see the Elder Matron."

He walks down the gangplank, and over to the barrels.

[Private to Darel Arwan: All right, got it! :)]

"Aye aye, Captain," says Sang, with a smattering of echo around him. They do seem to mean it, though grudgingly, lingering to finish the docking process, bring the barrels in. At least some of them sneak further peeks at the maidens, as well.

The young women remain near, as do the Elder and a somewhat reduced contingent of spearmen. They all collectively watch as Treon comes with Darel and Kathleen to inspect the barrels. Tethia follows as well, pausing to lend her keen eyes to the task.

The Cobalt members see nothing unusual at all with the produce. The fruit is fresh, recently picked, so will have to be consumed or dried quickly. The flour and rice are reasonably clean, considering the haste with which they must have collected them from the granaries. There are even a couple kegs of rum, apparently a specialty in the area. Another smaller chest contains strings of cowries and other necklaces fashioned of shell and coral, nacre and pearl. [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: Worth a reasonable amount, all together. Res 2, maybe even 3, in the West anyway (the only place where cowries have any worth). This is a tribute meant either to appease you... or to bribe.]

"Please enjoy your stay," speaks the Voice of the Matron without further explanation, finally guiding the Elder away to her residence to prepare... whatever it is they will prepare. "We will speak again soon."

The maidens remain, smiling warmly and invitingly, offering to show the group around and fulfill whatever pleasure they may ask for.

"I look forward to our visit," he says with a respectful nod to the departing matron.

Treon, after he finishes his inspection, helps the men carry the things aboard, quickly organising the work so that it's completed in the minimum amount of time and fuss, with everything stowed away that should be stowed.  At least one of the barrels of fruit is left on the deck (and in the shade) for all to eat from.  After that, he smiles winningly to one of the maidens.  "Could I ask you to walk us around the town, please?" he asks, voice warm.  "At least until the Elder Matron is ready."

Then with a nod to the crew, he departs with Darel.

Darel followed Treon, with his shapeshifted neomah in tow. He felt a bit uneasy with the sesselja swimming through his flesh, but knew that the spirit's potent healing and cleansing abilities could save his life. He had clearly instructed it not to let an eyestalk - or any other limb, for that matter - out of his skin.

Besides, if the islanders had anything to hide and things got out of hand, he could whistle for his agata to materialize and lift him and Treon off their reach (his neomah would simply have to dematerialize and hold on to the other demon).

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The walk is quite pleasant, actually... nothing much strange or unusual occurs, unless the maidens' excessive generosity could be put into suspicion. Some of them drift off with other Hammerhead crewmen, while the one called out by Treon follows along. It would have been two, but Kathleen is decidedly adamant about staying as close to Darel as possible, and so the maidens leave him be.

"My name is Aranita," the dark-haired beauty next to Treon introduces herself demurely. "And our village is called Umai."

The village is not a very large one. She shows them around to the main square, where their largest fountain is, as well as their modest market and the artisan's row. Much like in Wavecrest, their crafters and merchants are all women. They have a smithy, a carpenter. Weavers and tailors, dyers and jewelry-crafters. Bakers as well, the sweet, delicious smell of their wares wafting temptingly from open windows.

Textiles and small crafts to be their strong suit, and of course produce, both harvested fruits and from agriculture. The fields surrounding the village are largely grains as well as sugar... a luxury, in many parts of the world. The sugar cane fields also explain why they seem to have a great abundance of rum.

As they walk, though, most of the other villagers watch them guardedly. The children are too young to be worried, and their mothers herd them away as the Terrestrials pass. Aranita seems unconcerned, though, chatting animatedly about this or that landmark to fill up time, moving Treon and Darel and Kathleen along before they can linger too long in one spot.

Treon wonders a little at the strange, and beautiful, woman that was Darel's companion.  She seemed so oddly possessive of him at times.  But then, she might be a spirit of some kind, or even a demon, after the summoning he had seen... he gave a little shake of his head.

"Hello, Aranita," Treon says with a charming smile for the dark-haired woman beside him.  "Please, then, show us around Umai," he gestures onwards.  As she shows them around, Treon finds complimentary things to say both about the village and about her, looking around him as he is shown, trying to get a feel for the place as they pass the time.  "Have you had many visitors recently?" he asks her, when they've been walking for a while.
[Private to GM: Trying to charm and dazzle her into being talkative about things.  He's willing to spend motes on the Presence Excellency to do so, for 4 extra dice. for 13 (or 15 if his coat counts) dice + stunt]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

While Darel and Kathleen continue to trail behind, Treon works his charm on Aranita, who flushes and flusters in response. Clearly she's never been so privileged by the company of such a handsome, well-dressed ship captain before -- an effect only multiplied by the fact he seems to read her moods just so, knowing exactly what to say to warm her heart and do away with her misgivings. She starts fidgeting daintily with her sari, unconsciously brushing at her hair as if to make sure it's falling down her shoulders just so.

"Oh, w-well... Mister Fireblade, sir..." The impromptu tour has stopped for the moment at a high point in Umai the villagers call 'Prayer Hill'. Here is the best view of the sunrise, which has progressed above the waterline, still spreading its glorious rays across the gently rolling waves. There is a small shrine here, but its doors are shut tight, and no priests or priestesses wander the ground.

Aranita gazes down bashfully, her eyes trained on her fingers. "Well you see, our island is called 'the Gateway to the Far West'. So yes, we have visitors, though I do not know they are 'many'. Those who do come like to sight-see, or come to trade. Sometimes they are adventurers -- explorers. Or monks. They often come here from the mainland to convert us, but we... we enjoy our faith the way it is." Her glance shifts to the shrine, briefly, then down again.

"Then came the Dragon God. Some call him the False Dragon God." The girl's voice is hushed. "He came from deep beneath the sea. And he bewitched the western village of Tekai to worship him. Now we are pressed in between the mainland faith and... and this new God... and it's made everyone worried about visitors."

"But... they keep coming. Ever since that woman with the red hair. The one they say disappeared. Elder Maha-suma is uneasy, for the island has gotten much attention at a time we'd... rather not have it... but oh, oh! I'm talking entirely too much..."

OOC: Treon rolled 9 sux so this girl is spilling a lot of info. Poor thing. :D She wouldn't be a match for Treon in an extended social battle, so, figured she may as well say what she knows!

Listening to the girl's revelations, Darel raised an eyebrow. Dragon God? He wondered what it could be. A lesser elemental dragon, like Fakharu, the Censor of the West, who would brave the Immaculate Faith and Heaven's edicts and gather worship in Creation, or something even more sinister? He pondered the question, plundering his vaults of occult and historic knowledge, letting Treon defuse the maiden's fears about their intentions and definite lack of proselytizing...

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

It's on one of the unconscious hair brushes at Treon gently takes hold of her hand, lifting it away from her hair after a brief flick of his own finger sets an errant lock straight.  "There's no need for that, Aranita," he says, his voice warm.  "Your hair is quite beautiful however it falls," giving her a small smile before he releases her hand once more.

He listens attentively, although without any judgement, to her as she speaks of the strange 'False Dragon God', his eyes leaving her just for a moment to flick across to Darel, quirking an eyebrow, curious as to if he had any theories before he returned his attention fully to Aranita.  "Now, now, Aranita, there is no need to worry about us or what you reveal to us," his voice sincere as he smiled reassuringly.  "We'll keep everything just between ourselves," he continues.  "Though I must admit you have piqued my curiousity with the mention of this Dragon God ... what manner of worship does he want?" he pressed for a little more information, stepping closer to the girl--close enough to make the questions seem intimate, private, whilst not being close enough to intimidate.

"And what can you tell me about the woman with red hair?" he asks, and then gives her a slightly conspiratorial smile.  "We're here to look for her, you see," he confides in the woman.  "Perhaps once she is found, everything will calm down here ...," he ventures.
[Private to GM: If more social rolls are needed, the pool and charm usage is the same as before.  His main priority is to calm her, but he would like to get some more information too, and is willing to flurry if this is needed (spending motes on both actions)]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"T..Thank you Mister Fireblade," Aranita says, her cheeks still warm. Her stomach flutters with the thought: Elder Maha-suma would certainly be scandalized!! But something about Treon's proximity makes her feel relaxed, confident, sure in her beauty and the interest her words draw from the two men. [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: Gave you a +2 stunt :)]

"The Dragon God, honestly, we know very little of him. I know little of his worship... only that his people are fanatically loyal." The island maiden gives a little shudder. "But he takes the form of a... a reptilian man. He is tall, very tall, with brown scales and a tail and snout like a crocodile! I have seen crocodiles, in the southern lagoons, but nothing like this being who walks among the people of Tekai!" [Private to Darel Arwan: You're certain the being Aranita speaks of is a Western Dragon King, one of the Mosok. He has apparently taken up residence in western Nkiru and likely made a small cult of the people there, to gain strength through their worship and tribute.]

"But the red-haired one, Lady Megara of Cynis, she came in a vessel at least as grand as yours. She was no monk, fortunately, and mostly preoccupied -- impatient, even. She seemed hurried to pursue a quest that had consumed her mind, and stayed only to ask us of it. The lady sought the Black Rock Chasm, though we warned her it was folly. Lesser men have been lost there, seeking treasures of black jade! But she sought something greater... I do not remember... a book or a stone, or some such..."

Aranita suddenly breaks off, shaking her head distractedly as her eyes drift toward the south. During their conversation, a sound has arisen from the southwest, a distant drumbeat? Darel and Treon hear it as well, as does Kathleen, from the tightening of her hand on his arm.

"Treon," he says, his voice soft, but firm and his smile encouraging.  "Thank you, Aranita.  You've been very informative, very helpful," he says, as he hopes that Darel can make more sense of the description of the 'god'.  A god or a demon?  One of the Anathema that were said to sometimes wander the world?  Something stranger?

I wonder also what this Megara was searching for, that might consume her mind so.  Seeking another manse?  "It is a shame she didn't heed your advice, but then she following a dream of sorts.  It can be hard to give those up," he says, his voice taking on a briefly melancholy tone.

Then his ears pricked up as he heard the sound in the distance.  "What do the drums mean, Aranita?" he asks softly.

Darel's eyes widened in delight as he thought of a solution to the conundrum. For a second his face seemed to light in wonder as that of a child handling his new tow. Of course!

"I would have a word with you later about this Dragon God," he whispered to Treon as Aranatia pursued her explanation. That's when he noticed the drumbeats. His gaze followed the maiden's to the south, and he squinted his eyes to see what was coming.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

There's nothing to be seen at least immediately -- the southern end of the mountain range splitting Nkiru in two is blocking the way.

Darel's agata, though, has something to report, coming near in dematerialized form to communicate it to him. [Private to Darel Arwan: "It is a procession of canoes rowing around the island from the west. They are chanting and beating drums and have brought with them a lizard-man."] Aranita's expression is wide-eyed at the disembodied sound of crystal chimes that resounds from the agata's brief statement, but it's an entirely too beautiful sound for her to fear.

Asked about the drums, though, her expression is startled. "Oh, ohhh... this is just terrible timing! Please, Mister... ah... Treon, and Mister Darel, we must return to the Elder at once!" She urges them to follow, leaping away and down Prayer Hill so quickly she risks tumbling down it in a heap.

As they follow the young maiden, Darel spoke to Treon in a low voice, using High Realm: "It seems the Dragon God is coming from the sea, with a few canoes...I am convinced he is part of a race of reptilian humanoids called the Dragon Kings, that predate humanity... This one must belong to a sub-species called the Mosok, adapted to the seas of the West... It is likely he is drawing power from the local population in the form of prayers. We must tread carefully, they have elemental abilities of some potency..."

Treon cocks his head at the odd and melodious sound, wondering a little at how a demon could sound so beautiful.

"Careful there, Aranita," he says in Seatongue, taking hold of her arm lightly to steady her as she hurries down.  "We'll take a lot longer to get there if you fall." When they reach the bottom, he keeps his hand there for a while longer.

"If he presses us, so do I," Treon says to Darel in High Realm.  "Though I would prefer to avoid conflict with him, if that is possible."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Elder Maha-suma is already waiting outside her two-story dwelling, one of the few stone buildings in the vicinity. Bells have begun ringing throughout the entire village of Umai, gathering people to the town square.

The wizened matron is accompanied by her Speaker and honor guard. When Aranita and Treon, Darel and Kathleen appear before her, she glances to the taller Speaker, who utters, "Visitors. We apologize for the unexpected disturbance. If you wish, you may wait inside my home until all is well; however, I am obliged to ask your favor in lending your presence to our entourage. Nkiru's quarrels are not yours, we understand this much, but should you have mercy in your heart, please stand with us."

The Speaker stoops to listen to the Elder's next words, then adds, "We would be happy to compensate you with more of Nkiru's beauty and bounty." While she says this, the Elder's expression goes sour, as if she is unhappy with the idea of bribing her guests, if indeed that is what the people of Umai have been doing from the start.

"Darel, would you be so good as to ask Tethia to please return to the Hammerhead, along with any of the crew she finds, and to start preparing the Implosion Bow," he spoke as a rapid aside in High Realm.  "I don't intend to start a fight if it can be avoided, but I will finish it," he stated simply.

Turning once more to give the Elder his attention.  "Before we do join you in your entourage, I need to return my ship.  They are my first responsibility here."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"The God of Western Nkiru has come to pay a visit," replies the Speaker gravely.

Elder Maha-suma starts to proceed toward the town square to meet these chanting newcomers. She has said her peace. If the Dragon-blooded would help, they would help; if not, then so be it. In any case, her Speaker and entourage fall into step with her, and the villagers gathered in the square part on either side to allow her passage toward the beach.

Meanwhile, the canoes the agata had reported to Darel have begun to make their appearance from around the south point of Nkiru's Fang. At the lead boat stands the brown-scaled leader, the 'Dragon God', flanked on one side by a slender, white-haired young man dressed in silks. Following second is the only boat that is not one of the long canoes, a battered fishing boat that bears a young, radiantly blonde woman with her crew of two. They seem... out of place among the native islanders. As does the silk-clad man, though his proximity to the 'God' indicates he is an important figure.

About a half dozen canoes follow behind them. Occupying each are western Nkiruans wearing ceremonial loincloths, wreaths of shell and bone, masks carved to resemble their god. The rowers work to the beat of hand drums, and chant phrases meant to praise and honor their god: his strength, his stateliness, his dominion over the sea.

[Private to Hera; Indrid Cold; Tomistoma: The village of Umai itself is larger and more prosperous than Tekai, even sporting a few stone buildings among the thatch-roofed homes characteristic of Nkiru. Tomistoma, Indrid and Hera see, among the fishing vessels and other small craft at the pier, a sturdy large yacht flying a cobalt banner with a sea serpent and thorned vine design. This must be the Terrestrials' ship that the native scout spoke of.

They also see the people of Umai grouping in a restless throng, and their Elder Matron organizing to meet them. A tall, thin man with blue hair and a handsome man in a blackened coat stand out among the crowd.
]

OOC: Treon, you should be able to reach the Hammerhead, the Elder will be going toward the pier anyway to meet this new procession.

[Private to Hera; Indrid Cold; Tomistoma: You're still en route, not yet close enough to shore or to be heard by people on shore (unless you've got charms or powers to aid that). But you can post reactions, or speak amongst each other.]

Treon nods his head.  As the Elder and her entourage moved forward, Treon instead moved off to the ship, stepping up the gangplank to find Black Reed and hopefully Tethia.  He looks about the assembled crew.  "A 'god' from the western part of this isle is coming to visit.  I will be with the Elder Matron's entourage for this meeting," he speaks calmly and firmly.  "I don't expect there to be violence, and I don't want you waiting with weapons in hand, but if it does go south, I trust you to be ready," he concludes.  "Any questions?" he asks, looking around, and then after any have been asked, he leaves the ship.

After leaving the ship, he moves down onto the beach, to rejoin Darel and the Elder's entourage, awaiting the arrival of the 'god' and his people, studying them as he does.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Per Darel's message, Tethia has already pulled the tarpaulin away from the implosion bow, and is standing there at the ready. The group coming in with the canoes sees the weapon revealed, and may or may not take that as a hostile action, though she has not yet targeted anything with it.

"Understood, sir," says Black Reed immediately, and sets about shaping up the men. A few other men are still aboard (Hobnail, Tonsar, Jarvan, Crowfoot and Zir) and ready but several of the others are still among the throng of villagers, having spent some time ashore relaxing... or skirt-chasing. A few of the stragglers are starting to return though, seeing the trouble gathering. Sang in particular comes slinking back with a rather prominent red hand-mark on his cheek, looking unabashed.

There aren't really questions, besides whether they'd be leaving before the day is over, after all. Also some grousing about being interrupted from relaxation, but when Treon points out their help would pay for further hospitality they warm up to it quite a bit.

The procession with all its rowdy chanting and drum beating continues unabated in the meantime. The gathered villagers have begun something of an anti-chant: apparently some sort of anthem of Umai solidarity. With so many voices to contribute, it's more than enough to compete.

Standing at the prow upon the season legs of a soul with years upon rougher seas, Indrid Cold, the last of the Amiliki-Kings, stares for long at the vessel they approach. Fine a vessel though it is, it seems not like the chariots that convey the Prices of the Earth across the waves in his own lands. Though in truth, he has seen few of either upon awakening here.

His gaze is drawn to the motion taking place upon the deck and watches as the tarp pulls away. The gesture is clear and the sight of what lay below fills his heart with subtle dread. He stoops down to speak to the Dragon-King in a hushed voice, switching to the tongue of the Old Realm to avoid alerting the islanders rowing dutifully behind him. "(In Old Realm) Approach in caution, my lord Tomistoma. Tis a weapon of terrible power they carry there. I know it of old. Should it be their will to fire, I fear none of us would survive."

"Trumpeter, sound thy horn. Speak to them in strong note we come with peaceful purpose," Indrid orders one of the islanders behind him, a wide-breasted man with a great conical seashell carefully carved to blast out sound or song across the horizon.

"Thou are a woman of the sea within these lands, have thy chance to cross ship of this caliber in thy journeys, lady Hera?" he asks to the woman in the cannon across from his own, speaking rather literally above the head of Tomistoma. "It's nature is not unknown to me, yet I confess not truly recognizing the class of such a vessel."

Finally the canoes round the last curve of rocky shore before they reach the beach, skirting the raised pier where Umai's fishing boats are docked. Tomistoma and his entourage may come ashore as they wish, meeting the Elder, her entourage and the Terrestrials waiting for them on foot, or choose to address them from the boats.

Neither the local villagers nor the Tekai are at all willing to silence themselves until the other quiets down first. Elder Maha-suma does not raise her hand for silence, in any case, unless the 'Dragon God' calls his drummers to cease.

Indrid finds that Hera would know no more than himself about the make of the ship, as she has lived a life sequestered from the wide world until very recently. It is definitely no design from the age he was born in, built of sturdy but mundane material. The shape reminds him of large ceremonial or pleasure craft, though, strengthened and altered slightly to better weather naval combat.

[Private to Darel Arwan: So long as the canoers don't disturb the Hammerhead, your eristufa is remaining quiet and dematerialized. You feel that it is definitely starting to get agitated with all the noise and emotion emanating from the islanders, though.]

OOC: I'm really needing some input from Tomistoma and Hera to continue this, I think this is as far as I can stretch without them posting. Now the Elder's arms rise up... then down. The people of Umai cease their singing, though they remain restless, whispering among each other. Some scowl and gaze toward the canoes with mistrust, others cling worriedly to their loved ones.

The short-statured matron murmurs to her Speaker, a maiden of dark green hair and strong features. Her face registers incredulity, then smooths into an expression more politely neutral.

"The village of Umai hears your greeting... Lord of the West." The Speaker's use of the title sparks another wave of murmurs, which another gesture from the Elder hushes down. "The Elder Matron Maha-suma wishes to know what business has brought you to us, and prays you bring no trouble or quarrel."

We have no intention to worship your personage, Godly though it may be." There are fierce nods of assent from the gathered people of Umai, who grow bold with the aid of Treon, Darel, Tethia and the Hammerhead on their side.

The Elder's speech comes out sentence by sentence, as her Speaker faithfully relates. The matron stands proudly the entire time, her head held high and her dark eyes gazing squarely at the Mosok, while her honor guard bristles around her. "You speak of individuals of Power. Indeed, the Terrestrials have favored our side of the island as of late."

"If this interests you, I am willing to exchange information, as leader to leader. So long as you will take none of my people as worshippers. None! You must understand, we of Umai feel threatened, as we risk losing our culture and our territory to your worship, as the people of Tekai have!"

Jeers and boos come from the Tekai boats. "We are not so mindless!" cries out one of their number, a young man fervent in his faith. "Our God has protected and favored us! Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Observing the people of Tekai, Darel is pretty sure there is no unnatural influence present. They are not mutated by the Wyld, or hypnotized or bespelled. They appear to truly believe the Dragon King their savior. It could be that Tekai has more of a symbiotic relationship with their god, than a harmfully subservient one.

The people of Umai are not typically warmongers, either; they are just more numerous. Unlike the people of Tekai the Nkiru mountains shield them a great deal from the Fae, rogue storm-mothers and other hazards of the Far West. They have a closer relationship with Wavecrest, so more opportunities for trade as well as protection from their Navy or even the Realm -- though from what Aranita said the people of Umai are not terribly fond of Realm influence in Wavecrest and its tributaries.

Because of the relative prosperity and position of Umai, a cult would have more problem taking root there than with the less numerous and more endangered Tekai. But the Umai are also rather insular, so see Tomistoma's 'conversion' of the Tekai people as the possible beginnings of a hostile takeover. While the Umai people's refusal to worship may be seen by the Tekai as an affront.

OOC: Darel, I'm sorry, I realized I never posted the results of your investigation roll. so consider this a combination of that plus the Socialize. [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: since you've got great socials, you could probably assume you know all this, too... or if you'd rather you can roll a perc+socialize, and with 3 or more success get a similar idea of the situation as Darel got. Tomistoma raises a hand to silence his followers. "The bond between faithful and their lord is one of mutual obligation." The Dragon King replies, as if lecturing to students, "Worship must be repaid with deeds."

"What have I to offer the people of Umai?"
He asks gesturing with his arms to the people gathered on the beach, "Shall I swim around the island every time Umai needs divine help? To precide over every festival?" The huge reptile's shoulders shake a bit as a hissing laugh escapes past his conical teeth, "I am indeed a mighty predator, but I would be an unwise hunter indeed if I claimed a larger hunting ground than I could care for or defend."

He half-turns from his stance at the prow of the beached canoe, looking across his shoulder at his followers, "My beloved people of Tekai meet my needs, and I meet their's. I possess not the hubris to force all of Creation to bend knee to me."

Princes of the Earth...

Silent since their approch, Indrid is a watchful presence off the Dragon-King's shoulder. He feels his hammer, Hanuman, react to the mere presence of the Terrestrials. A tingle under his hand as he balanced the massive goremaul with head down and handle up - a peaceful and yet somewhat authoritive stance.

Now mine eyes have been laid upon thee, yet these names and faces, I know them not. Does no house of the Shogunate yet stand here? What place is this, where the rulers of the world carry so much less in the vanity and glory of their station? Walk upon naked soil and not the petals of roses? Tis a most... unseemly thing.

"Knowledge-Seeker," Indrid says suddenly towards Treon and knelt down humbly, eyes averted to the bottom of the boat before he went on. "Prince of the Earth. I am the Amiliki, Indrid Cold. Servant to the Dragon-King Tomistoma by oath, yet servant to thee by birth."

"Thou speak of questions to be answered. Low before thee as I am,  I am not without my talents. It may not be beyond my capacity to assist. In the way of goodwill, as gesture both for myself and mine lord Tomistoma, let me rendered unto thee what aid I may."

"So, then, people of Umai, are you reassured as to Tomistoma of the Tekai's intentions here?" he asked of the gathered crowd, and the matron.

"And whether you are or not, such discussions are better held face to face rather than bellowed across the water.  If the Elder Matron would permit it,  can the Dragon-King Tomistoma and some of his entourage land, that such talks may be accomplished with some level of civility?"

Amiliki?  Who are the Amiliki? Treon tried to remember.

"If this is not the case, then I would like to speak with you, Indrid Cold, aboard my ship, the Hammerhead," he addresses the kneeling man.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

While the newcomers and the Terrestrials conversed with one another, the Elder and her entourage have been deep in discussion. The people of Umai murmur quietly amongst themselves as well, though their attitude is less hostile now and more... Uncertain? Expectant?

Finally the Speaker clears her throat and speaks again, at Elder Maha-suma's behest. "If you will walk among us only as a visitor, and neither hunt nor convert our people to your flock, then we will allow you upon our shores, Dragon King Tomistoma." The murmuring from the gathered crowd of locals grows louder, a note of incredulity there, but the Speaker... speaks louder, the edge in her tone quieting them down. "However, we would hope you leave us with the next dawn, which we hope will be suitable for you to sate your curiosity."

The Elder's expression is noticeably less stern when she gazes upon Hera, and nudges the Speaker to continue. "Hera, daughter of Nan, the Handmaiden shines her grace upon us by bringing you here. Be welcome among our people, whether you choose to stay or not." Another pause, as the Elder Matron makes a wide gesture with both arms; her guards turn their spearpoints down, and her cadre of island maidens step forward... in some cases quite nervously... to welcome the 'Dragon God' and his entourage. Aranita, however, remains close by Treon and Darel, quietly glad to have been 'assigned' to them.

"We have a banquet prepared," is Maha-suma's final pronouncement. "All of our visitors will be addressed as one as guests in my home. Citizens of Umai, return to your homes and daily tasks! This matter is now closed!"

OOC: Treon and Indrid can have their chat on the Hammerhead, but the Elder will be expecting all of the PCs at her house, too. I'll move the scene ahead once I get a feel for what you'll all be doing.

[Private to Cathak Garel Treon: You... really have no idea what the Amiliki are except that the word appears to have an Old Realm sound to it.]

[Private to Darel Arwan: Your studies as a sorcerer/occultist make this a bit easier. You have heard the word "Amiliki"; it is an old word that means 'adept', and you believe it was synonymous with 'thaumaturge'. How that relates to Indrid's oaths or birth you have no idea, though.]

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The people of Umai are respectful enough of their Elder to snap quickly to attention as soon as they are dismissed. Quickly the crowd disperses as they shut themselves up in homes and common rooms, likely to gossip amongst one another about recent events, and keep themselves as far away as possible from the Dragon King. One presumes from their behavior that they have been told some quite frightening tales (propaganda?) about the 'Dragon God of the West', likely to keep them from being drawn toward Tekai and the 'new religion'.

The smaller entourage from Tekai is unhappy with the lukewarm welcome, but they make no more loud or rude gestures, leaving it to the wisdom of their God to express their true intent for arriving here. They do not step ashore until Tomistoma has done so first, in any case.

All that remains of the Umai on the beach now are the Elder and her Speaker, her guard and her maidens. For whatever reason they seem more comfortable with Hera's presence than any of the others.

Treon makes a gesture to the Hammerhead, to indicate to those onboard that the man should be helped up and that he will be over shortly to converse with him.

"Certainly, Elder Matron," Treon acknowledges with a nod.  "I will join you for your banquet in a short while," he indicates the boat to say where he will be.

"Darel, please feel free to come back to the Hammerhead with me, or to go with the Elder Matron and converse more with the Dragon King Tomistoma." Whilst his insight would be welcome when dealing with the strange man now boarding his vessel, he would understand if the man wished to speak more with the dragon king.

Then, with a smile to Amarita, he walked back to the Hammerhead.

Darel smiled. "I think I will stay with the Matron for now," he said, following her entourage.

"I think we have a lot to discuss about," he said with a cryptic glance at the Dragon King, and the woman openly wearing orichalcum.

"I am Darel Arwan, of the Emissaries of Perfect Waters," he told them in Old Realm, introducing himself after having stood slightly apart of the earlier exchange. "I must confess that I am most surprised by the sight of a living and civilized member of such an incredibly ancient and august species, thought extinct or fallen into barbarism. Almost as much as the sight of crafted orichalcum, which the Scarlet Dynasty went to great pains to confiscate and hide."

Hera looks blankly past the ongoing conversations in the languages of the corrupt priests. She is forced to wonder, why the language is so popular beyond and if her father should think about lifting his ban on it's teaching. Her words are simple in the language of the people, Seatongue. "Thank you, Matron. And thank you people of this land. Me and my companions accept your hospitality. Praise be to Nan."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Aranita looks like she would very much like to follow Treon and Indrid, but a look from her Elder stays her, and she remains with the main entourage. Technically she would remain near Darel, but again there is that other strange woman that hangs close to him, so she looks a little bit at a loss, wringing her hands.

Fortunately for Hera, the people of both halves of Nkiru are also speakers of Seatongue, albeit with a different accent than she is used to. After some quite conference with the Matron, the Speaker echoes her Elder's words. "You are quite welcome, lady Hera. We are sadly unfamiliar with the name of your father, but perhaps you would know of the Handmaiden, Vesperna?" There is some hope in her tone, though it is mostly polite. [Private to Hera: You probably wouldn't know, exactly, but the people of Umai do seem to recognize and respect your authority as daughter of a Sunchosen god-king so you assume this Vesperna must have some common ties.]

The young maidens sent forth to welcome Tomistoma and his people flank them on either side as they step ashore, still nervous but valiantly showing their best and most pleasant expressions. Chosen for their beauty and hospitality, their presence serves to pacify even the hardier Tekai at least somewhat.

With the Tekai thusly preoccupied, Tomistoma, Hera and Darel are beckoned to join the Elder. Umai village has been built on a slope, and the stone-paved path she indicates is now and then is broken by short flights of stairs, so buildings above shore level appear to be tiered. The apex of the village is not actually the Elder's home, but a rounded hilltop upon which a small, closed shrine is situated. Nonetheless, the dwelling is a beautiful one even seen from a distance, crafted (as Darel and Treon have already seen) from stone and ceramic roof-tiles rather than the wood and thatch of the lower homes.

Tomistoma's prehistoric expression is unreadable as he steps onto the beach, which signals his people to join in. He speaks to his chief quietly before leaving his followers to walk with the elders of Umai. "The hospitality of the people of Umai is obviously inferior to their paranoia. Accept their hospitality and return to our shores, remembering the shackles that rulers without the confidence and love of their followers place on them to keep them in their place." As he steps away, he puts a hand on the chief's shoulder, meeting the smaller mammal's eyes, "And make it clear to our people that anyone that cares to stay behind with the soft people of Umai and their fearful rulers is free to do so."

Walking away with the elders and Dragon-Bloods, he addresses Darel. "Extinct, no. Barbaric, certainly. It is a miracle indeed when any of my people rise above their animalistic birth. My search has found no remains of Dragon King's civilization, only scattered tribes, 'herds' more like, of savage young, and a few ruins." He considers keeping any knowledge to himself, deciding to show the people of Umai that he lacks their paranoia, and has the confidence to speak openly, to deal with them as equals, rather than rivals to be feared.

The chief of the Tekai, a man named Jangat, bows proudly and confidently upon being personally bestowed the counsel of the Dragon God. "It will be as you say. Though I believe some of us may partake in the 'softness' of these people, none will stay permanently. Praise to you, Great One, your wisdom and guidance ever inspire us." He bows again, deeply and respectfully, and withdraws again toward the boats... and the maidens.

The Speaker smiles back to Hera. With the Elder moving ahead of the procession, the younger woman with green hair answers the Golden Childe for the first time using her own words. This way, her speech is plainer, rather than the formal tones of her 'official' voice.

"How I wish we could meet Her. But the Handmaiden has long departed from this world. We only know her blessings from a distance now." She is uneasy with Tomistoma's attitude of derision, and so largely ignores the Dragon King, murmuring her words specifically for Hera's ears. "Though I am the Speaker, I am also the Elder's first daughter. You may call me Risina."

Two maiden-servants hold open the double door entrance into the Elder's dwelling. The Matron enters at the lead, with the Speaker and Hera following, then Darel, Kathleen and Aranita, then Tomistoma (catching up after his brief words to Jangat). The entryway is spacious, with painted folding screens and places for those with shoes to place them so as not to leave tracks on the bamboo floor.

The Dragon King holds an arm out towards Darel, the kelp-like leaves of his magnificent robe glint in the light, as each is gilt along the edge in the same golden metal as Hera's bracers. "Some few of my people's wonders still remain, at least."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The dining room is adjacent, overlooking a tropical flower garden. The meal is spread out on a long low table, and the seats are cushions on the floor, upon which the islanders sit in lotus style. The cuisine is fare such as vegetable spring rolls, rice dumplings on banana leaves, baked shellfish and scallops, seafood stew with rice noodles, or codfish braised whole. There is also a barbecued rack of lamb, and a honey glazed poultry, for those who dislike the seafood.

The Elder and Speaker seat themselves first, then invite their guests to sit as well. The few maidens who accompanied them begin to serve and distribute the meal. For a time there are few words, as dishes are passed around, soup ladled into bowls, food and drink sampled and enjoyed.

Finally the Elder takes her utensils and starts tapping on her ceramic cup to draw the guests' attention. In such close proximity, Maha-suma does not bother to let her daughter speak for her. Her voice is still quiet, though, more of a raspy whisper, but it forces the guests to remain quiet at the table in order to hear her. "Visitors, it has come to my attention that you have vested interests in the fate of the Savant known as Cynis Megara. We, too, are interested in her recovery, for while she remains missing, Umai will know no peace from the Realm. Should you agree to help one another in finding her, we would tell you all that we know."

"Thank you for joining us, Captain of the Hammerhead," replies the Elder to Treon. She rests her gaze upon Indrid, as well. "And you, Amiliki. For tonight we will eat together in peace."

"Cynis Megara is not one of ours, lady Hera," Risina continues on, when the Elder's words are interrupted by a racking cough. It appears speaking unaided is not always easy for the Matron. "She is a Terrestrial chosen. And her kin are kin of the Realm and their Empire. However, because Megara visited us last, we do feel an obligation to tell any rescue party where she has gone."

After drinking a long sip of tea the Elder touches Risina's arm, so that she may continue in her quiet, wispy voice. "The Black Rock Chasm has been known to my people for centuries. It was considered cursed since before the time of Elder Matron Shiv-hala, thirteen generations hence. The Umai know to avoid it by the color of the water in its vicinity; there it is stained black, as if by a squid's ink."

"When the Handmaiden was among us, She kept the Chasm dormant. But whatever magic She wove has weakened. Now ships that linger there are often lost. Others have returned emptied of cargo, and the crew speak of horrific sea monsters in their midst. Only two have returned with treasures, artifacts of deceptive beauty and untapped power that have been kept sealed since. It is such wonders that draw people to venture there, despite the dangers."

The Speaker takes over again, to allow her Elder to rest and continue to eat. "Megara is only one of the unlucky lost at the Chasm. But she went there willingly. The Chasm, you see, is completely underwater. Deep, so deep that no ordinary human can venture there unaided. She thought perhaps with her sorcery, her superior equipment, she would triumph in the den of the sea monsters. Ha! We've no reason to think she survived, but no proof she died, either. That is where you come in."

Treon listens attentively to both the Matron and her Speaker, considering what they say.  That does indeed sound like the Pelagials Indrid described to me not moments ago, reaches a conclusion.  This might definitely explain how such a sorceress became unstuck.

And what do to about Tomistoma?  He seems to be honest enough, at least..., Treon weighed things in his head as he considered the giant lizardman.  He came to his decision fairly quickly, however.  "Your help would definitely be appreciated," Treon told him.  "Your experience underwater far exceeds mine, I am sure."

"Did she travel alone or was she accompanied by a sizable retinue?" Treon enquired.  "And exactly how long ago did she leave here?"

He has some notion of what is being discussed after his talk with Treon, but still must indulge in silence as he figures out the finer points. "These sea monsters of whom thou speaks, are they the pelagial? Or some other creature dwelling in the sea-folks forgotten realm?"

By what Vedas Arundi had shown him, Indrid reasons that the pelagial are, or at least were, an intelligent race of beings. There was, perhaps, an opportunity for reason and discourse to win out in contact with them, should they still be found in that foreboding-named place.

When Aranita comes in to pour tea for those who have just seated themselves, her eyes linger on Treon. A blush forms on her cheeks, but she quickly moves to the next guest's cup before Speaker Risina can take notice.

"Lady Megara was not alone, Treon Fireblade. She arrived with a vessel of wondrous quality, about the size of yours, and four merchant vessels. It was... quite a fuss when she arrived. Her captains were all Dragon-blooded and her crew, they were rather uncouth and foul-tempered. All of them together numbered over 100."

"Pelagial is not a word we know, Amiliki," replies the Elder to Indrid. "Though it is the word that Cynis Megara called them. We do know the sea monsters are unlike the Fair Folk. They are not of the Wyld. Rather more like those beings we have seen corrupted by the Wyld. Flesh and blood creatures."

"It was, by now, about three weeks ago. With the attitude they had, I would not be surprised if much of her crew has long deserted her." Risina shakes her head wearily. Playing host for Megara's crew must have been a harrowing experience. "But she was able to breathe water like air. A simple drowning would not hinder her."

Thinking on the topic of pelagials, Darel knows that they are an old and long-lived race that once had a vast empire beneath the sea. They appear like men but with the lower body of a manatee or bull seal. Their numbers have dwindled since, but savants, traders, slavers, even Western leaders know of them. Despite their grotesque appearance, they are quite literate, and skilled at creating manse and artifice. The Emissaries have had dealings with pelagials before, in fact, though it is rare they trade knowledge or artifact for anything but wealth or slaves (the latter of which the Emissaries, of course, frown upon).

Risina looks a little bit surprised that Hera had never so much as heard of a Terrestrial, but she does not question it. "Terrestrial in this case would be the Chosen of the Dragons. Their largest domain is in the center of Creation, the 'Realm'. But I dare not speak further on a topic those of the proper blood would know," she concludes cautiously, not wishing to offend any actual Dragon-bloods that may be present.

The Elder, on the other hand, appears both pleased and relieved upon hearing Hera's proclamation. "So then you are all in agreement to help one another? Then enjoy this meal, and our hospitality while you still may. Tomorrow we will send you off."

"We will hear any further questions you have for tonight, of course," adds Risina. She frowns slightly when she sees Aranita leave with the teapot, then return, lingering at the edge of the room.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

With nothing to add for now, Darel contented himself with enjoying Nkiru's hospitality, though he remained observant of the attendants' behavior. At the back of his mind, though, remained the thorny pelagial issue. If they could overcome a powerful sorceress and four Dragon-Blooded, they would be a danger to them as well. Besides, he did not want to run contrary to the Emissaries interests by antagonizing a faction of pelagials. More to discuss with Treon later, I guess.

Tomistoma imparts any knowledge of the pelagials he can to the discussion in between mouthfuls of various sea creatures. "I can stay submerged without effort for about an hour. Is there known if any pockets of air exist in this chasm?" He asks, one eye opening wider in what appears to be a lizardly approximation of a raised eyebrow.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"We do not know, Lord of Tekai," says Risina, frowning towards the Dragon King. "Never have we dared to enter the chasm ourselves. Rather, we thought that since Captain Fireblade came here seeking Lady Megara, he would have the means to seek her beneath the waves."

"The pelagials take land-dwelling slaves," adds Elder Maha-suma, her pinched face showing distaste (and not just from the tart ground-cherries she had just started to eat.) "Therefore one would assume they have some way to keep them alive in their underwater domains. They can breathe both in air and water, so the legends from our forebears say."

Tomistoma knows as much as Darel does of the pelagials, minus the relations to the Emissaries. He also recalls the name of their largest city, the "City of Shining Reefs". He can also speak of pelagial 'cults' he has encountered on other distant islands before settling down in Tekai, though he does not know much about them besides that they were cannibalistic and antagonistic to his presence, prompting him to leave rather than linger. Back then he was not even certain they were specifically pelagials or just some other wyld-mutated race, but the information from the others seems to corroborate with the pelagial cult theory.

[Private to Darel Arwan: Just a little detail on the Emissary relations... I wouldn't consider the pelagials their allies, as much as a source for artifacts and old knowledge. I wouldn't think the Emissaries would agree at all with the pelagials' ambitions in the West, which at base may be even worse than the Realm's. So the relations with the pelagials would be a tentative, distant one--they wouldn't want to outwardly anger the ancient race because of what knowledge and power they can get out of it, but they don't want the people of the West enslaved, recruited into cults or eaten by them, either.]

[Private to Cathak Garel Treon: Don't forget you have a portion of the maruera gum the Tya used. Non-aquatic folk can actually breathe underwater with it, though you'll still have to deal with movement penalties.]

"I do," he nods.  "It will probably do about the same for us as you can manage unaided, Dragonking Tomistoma.  Since, as the Elder notes, they take humans as slaves that should be enough to get us down to their levels.  And then back again, of course.

"Do you know what it was that Cynis Megara was seeking in the Chasm?" he enquires of the Elder and her speaker, holding up his cup to Aranita as he does for a refill, favouring her with a warm smile.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"It is an ancient tome that she sought," replies Elder Maha-suma, "one that supposedly held secrets of engineering from the days the golden ones ruled." The short-statured matron meets Treon's gaze boldly. "She called it the Librum of Adamant Artifice. Such a book of knowledge would no doubt be considered taboo if not outright forbidden texts to those of Immaculate leanings."

"I'm sure she sought more than a single artifact," says Risina, her manner more clipped as she watches Aranita carefully. "The Chasm could well hold untold riches, among its dangers. I'd recommend not to approach this task with hostilities. The easiest way to invite yourself into the Black Rock Chasm would be to present yourself as a dignitary... or a slave."

Aranita manages not to spill the tea as she blushes at Treon's smile.

"It grows late," Maha-suma says with finality. The maidens begin to clear away the plates, leaving only fruits, drinks and desserts, many of them likely too sugary for Tomistoma's palate.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Hera relaxes for the moment thinking over what has come to pass. While the dragon had little knowledge of he world, this village  had a good deal. They knew of entire races at the center of a place called Creation and kingdoms they controlled. Finding out more would help her father in dealing with them. The two kingdoms might be able to come to an accord perhaps even a trade agreement. Their lagoon was rich with fish, more than enough to feed the people of Home.

She looked to the outsiders of this place. The people who would help her with the monster of the chasm. They were different than these people, but did not share her pale white skin and golden hair. She would have to ask them about their lands and the god kings they serve.

"Thanks," he says quietly to Aranita after she pours the tea.

Treon frowned a little at the mention of the book being sought, but passed no overt comment.  "I had not planned to come in belligerently, Speaker," Treon remarks.  "I doubt that would help either ourselves or the lady Megara."

"Thank you Elder Matron, for the fine spread you have presented us with," Treon says with respect to her, as he picks up some of the sweet fruit.  "And for the information you have shared."

On hearing the Matron's explanations, Darel tried to recall if he had heard anything about such a libram.

Darel nodded at Treon's words. "We will have to try the diplomatic route," he smiled. "While not strictly allies, my master and his peers have dealt with the pelagial empire before, though some of their... customs are not to our liking," he added, regarding Risina's last comment.

He leaned closer to Treon and spoke in a low voice in High Realm. [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: "Though as far as I am concerned, I will not risk life and limb just for the sake of a Dynast. This tome of ancient crafting could be boon to Western civilization, but it could also spell doom for our freedom if it landed in the wrong hands."]

Treon's expression deepens as he speaks back in High Realm.  [Private to Darel Arwan: "You are welcome to stay here on this island then, until we return.  Because I will.  Not because they are a member of the Dynasty, but because they are in trouble.  If you're not willing to do that, then perhaps you should stay here."] And that isn't just because she could so easily have been the one I left behind ...

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

Darel frowned at Treon's comment. [Private to Cathak Garel Treon: "It is not my intention to abandon you. If there is an opportunity to rescue the Dynast and her crew without too great a cost, then... I am not without compassion. But you, of all the people here, should now what the Realm would do to the West if they had an expeditionary force to spare. When the race for the Scarlet Throne is over, they will turn their intentions outwards. Towards the Threshold. They will not take too kindly to any talk of autonomy, or at least getting a just return for the tributes we pay." Though his tone was level, there was a passionate spark in the eyes of the Dragon-Blooded.

"And I thought the Cobalt Alliance, which harbors a number of individual who have been at odds with their former homeland, would understand the danger the Realm poses - to them, or the West. In other circumstances I would much more open to the idea of helping a fellow wanderer of the seas, no matter where they hail from... But here we are talking about someone who would have handed powerful relics of the First Age to the Scarlet Empire. A tome which could be used to further their oppression. When the eyes of the Dynasty turn outwards once more, would you want to face war machines crafted using whatever secrets this Cynis Megara would have unearthed? I certainly don't.

I hope that this Cynis Megara and her crew can return to the Realm unarmed, but they will return empty-handed. I will accompany you to make sure of that."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

"You are welcome, Treon Fireblade," says Elder Maha-suma, though she seems more matter-of-fact than truly gracious. Not surprisingly, as it's more than obvious the generosity of the people of Umai is rather short when dealing with outsiders.

She and Risina exchange suspicious looks as Treon and Darel start to converse in the Realm language at the table.

Darel has certainly heard of the Librum of Adamant Artifice; in fact, Megara's expedition was not the first to have sought it. It is a relic many savants have sought -- most particularly those from nations that make use of ancient artifacts for war, such as the Realm. Even Lookshy has sent expeditions there before, though not so much in recent years, what with the Mask of Winters occupying Thorns, and the return of the Solar Exalted.

He has never before heard of anyone who had pinpointed the exact location of the librum though, so there's no absolute certainty that the Black Rock Chasm is the place. If Cynis Megara would risk her life to confirm it though, the chances ought to be good.

Tomistoma's inhuman hearing picks up many small details of conversation that others might wish to keep private as he quietly continues to chew down a mound of seafood he dumped onto his plate as the servants came to clear out the main course to serve the desserts. He shows no interest in fruits or other sweet treats, instead absently putting fish and other sea creatures down his throat almost continuosly until he finally leans back in his chair, his stomach distended around the feast.

Though quiet, Indrid listens closely. Hera's claim to not even know the word Terrestrial gives him a moment to reflect upon the strangeness of the woman. Foreign as everyone collected here is to his life, that singles her out easily as the strangest creature he's yet encountered. It is almost innocent and fascinating.

"Grandmother," Indrid says softly, addressing Maha-suma in polite tones. He knows it is not her 'proper' title, yet to use the name Elder or Matron has certain implications where he comes from. Standards she would neither meet nor possibly even desire to. "I desire not to be burdensome and strain the hospitality of thine island, yet I inquire if thy people possess an apothecary or store house of regiments which I may be granted access to."

Failing that, of course, the row back to Tekai and the boatsmen doubtless rested by now. His preference is simply to keep close to the boat, now that he was leant to their service.

"Fate willing I find what I need, tonight I shall begin bending myself towards the preparing a tincture which may allow those of us without lord Tomistoma's fortitude or the Dragon-Bloods magics to breath in the water for a brief time. I doubt not the prowess of the Host in keeping us safe in their exultant company, yet I think it may be a welcome caution should the event arise that we are separated in the deep."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 3 - Nkiru of the Sunset

The Elder takes her time thinking on Indrid's request. "Mmm.... we may grant you that," Maha-suma finally replies, a tone of disapproval in her voice; the term Indrid used was one only her own family ought to properly use. "Aranita, you will bring him to Edelina's hut. Tell her our guest may only take what he will immediately use."

The other remaining maidens clear away the rest of the feast. "Risina will arrange lodgings for you should you rest here for the eve. Good night." The Elder stands abruptly, and two of the young women break away to flank her, guiding her to her bedchamber.

Aranita leaves very reluctantly, casting a gaze or two back at Treon before leaving with Indrid toward Edelina's residence. She is their most skilled theurgist, and she lives atop the knoll called Prayer Hill. Rather than receive Indrid from the front door, though, the white-robed Edelina brings him through a back entrance with a lamp to light his way, leading right into a storage area with alchemical items. [Private to Indrid Cold: Actually, I had given Treon a substance for water breathing, a gum from a rare tree that produces air when chewed. But since Indrid wouldn't know that I'm having him go ahead anyway. You could use the time/materials to brew other things, too. Anyway, you'd probably be able to find any components of Res 2 or less here. Res 3, you may have to ask specifically, and Res 4+ is off limits.]

When the others are ready, Risina brings them to an inn on the waterfront that appears to have been vacated for the purpose of accommodating them. It is a clean and comfortable establishment, with soft pillows and clean sheets, fresh floral decor and pitchers of clean water kept filled and available. Joining them are several of the most beautiful young maidens, and a pair of young, attractive men, who linger in the lobby with the unspoken assumption that they would willingly keep their guests company for the night should they wish it.

Noticing the two women's stares, Darel spoke apologetically: "I am sorry if I offended you, we are discussing private matters - if Treon agrees, we will pursue this matter later if he has anything to add."

With that said, and unless Treon objected, Darel and his servant retreated to their assigned room to rest for the night.

Treon is about to reply at considerably more length to Darel, when he too notices the glance.  "Ah, my apologies.  Elder Matron, Speaker, all.  This should have been a discussion for a private forum," he speaks, his tone apologising.  "We should definitely consider it later, however,"  he notes to Darel.

"Goodnight, all," he nods to all assembled, and then goes to the sleeping quarters Umai had been good enough to provide, although he declines the offered company.
