Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

1st Day of Resplendent Water, RY 768
Mid-morning

The rest of yesterday was spent caring for the wounded, assessing damages and losses, looting the vile Lintha of their equipment. The dead were given their rites by Donnegal and the Falchion's chaplain - first the Lintha with cursory words and an unceremonious splash, then a longer and more heartfelt ceremony for the deceased Alliance crewmen and Wavecrest soldiers. Tears flowed freely, then rum and ale, as the survivors gathered to reminisce on their best moments in the battle, on the lives and deeds of fallen friends.

Morning comes as a blessing for those relieved to leave that chaotic clash with the Lintha to memory and song. Still, a sinister remnant remains: though the Blood Chalice of Kimbery has been extracted from the island Rakatau, it has not been destroyed. The vile artifact is in the possession of Captain Lasuri, who keeps it at bay with the ring of perfect black jade, bestowed upon him by Queen Sylpheel of the Nymphs. There is the matter of Melusine as well, whose ruined eyes resist any and all attempts of healing, even by Tageru's miraculous Satchel.

What will happen now? Who will continue on with the Alliance? Where would they go next? To answer these questions, Great Rakatau has suggested a meeting, inviting the Captains and officers of the Spring Dryad II, the Black Marlena, the Falchion and the Hirdu's Ambition onto the back of the newborn island ship. As the Alliance members, Captain Fairwind and Captain Hirdu gather at the strange elemental vessel, they are swiftly joined by procession of nymph and jokun, with Queen Sylpheel and Melusine at the head. Kiana's jokun honor guard remain with her, standing behind her in a half circle.

Rakatau speaks first, his immense shape making the island ship look like a pebble before a mountain. "BRAVE CAPTAINS AND CHOSEN OF THE DRAGONS, I HAVE GATHERED YOU HERE FIRST OF ALL TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE FOR YOUR EFFORTS. I AM MUCH PLEASED TO BE CLEANSED OF THE LINTHA TAINT, THOUGH I FEEL MUCH SORROW FOR WHAT IT HAS COST YOU. NOW YOU MUST SOON BE ON YOUR WAY, AND I WOULD PROVIDE WHAT GUIDANCE AND AID I CAN BEFORE YOU DEPART."

OOC: The Epilogue starts off with the Seven-Day folks. You can post what you've been up to in the morning, your appearance on the island ship, react to Rakatau or the other NPCs, etc. (Will post for more of the NPCs as people arrive)

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Zeru slept fitfully, falling unceremoniously out of his hammock not once but twice. Once for each time he had failed miserably in the battles he had fought. In his dreams he saw the actions that resulted from his failure. He had cost the beautiful nymph her eyesight with his cowardice, and his dropping of his guard had nearly cost Antov his life. He said a sailors prayer for those who lost their lives in the battle with the Lintha. After the second time Coral made herself a neat little bed on one of Zeru's pillows relinquished after waking the cat twice.

When morning arrives Zeru is hesitant to answer Rakatau's call. One the island ship prepared for him he would face his failure, he would likely face Melusine on it. And he was unprepared for such a meeting.

Still Zeru was not one to shirk his duties, but his trouble sleeping rendered him one of the first ones there. He stood solemnly his grin had receded as the tide and he kept his eyes averted from the lovely Nymphs in particular.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kiana stood with her honor guard, and with the five might Jokun behind her, Kiana was, even visibly, a little more relaxed than she normally was.  That wasn't to say that her slate gray (almost blue at times) eyes were not on a constant vigil, or that her ever perceptive ears were not open, willing, and ready.  No, it simply meant that if she did detect an enemy on approach, she was confident that the whole of them would be able to handle themselves, even after the losses and injured they had suffered.  That, and having five Earth Elemental Warriors insist on keeping you safe certainly made a girl feel nice and cozy.

Kiana had changed into the simple red dress that Jadira had bought for her when she had first joined the Alliance, and what she had worn during the summoning ceremony for bringing the Seven-Day Isle to the surface.  It performed its job admirably, accenting Kiana's still-growing feminine features, as well as making her seem much more lady like, almost like the Princess of Earth that the Jokun insisted on calling her.  And though technically Kiana was a sort of royalty, back on the Crimson Isles, there was no official title for it, and Kiana would be a liar if she said that, secretly, she didn't quite enjoy the title.

Clasping her hands together (sans Smashfish) in front of her, she gave a very low bow to the towering Rakatau, paying respect first and foremost to the powerful Earth Elemtnal.  "It was our pleasure, Great Rakatau.  Though we lament the loss of our people, rest knowing they did so willingly, and without regret.  I only we were able to save more of them." She said from the low bow, those perceptive eyes staring daggers at Captain Fairwind.

She rose from her bow, her hands falling to clasp in front of her, before she spoke again only after a few moments.  "This is only the first leg in our dealings with the Chalice of Kimberly, I'm afraid.  In order to restore Melusine's eyesight, I think the Chalice will need to be destroyed--and even if I am wrong, the dreaded artifact needs to be dealt with regardless.  I'm sure no mundane hammer or forge will suit that purpose...Rakatau, would you hold any wisdom in how best to rid the world of such a sickness?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kareth had spent the night restless.  After his anima had died down enough to help with moving the wounded, he offered what help he could.  Still, worry racking his mind and the words of the demonic relic rang in his head.

His initial thought was to decline the offer to attend the meeting with Rakatau.  However, he decided it would be in his best interest be informed of all developments first hand.  He stood in the back with his cloak flapping in the wind, revealing his black pants and freshly pressed white shirt.  Kareth wasn't one who was much for pomp, but he did care about his appearances; a product of his military training.

As Kiana stated her solution to Melusine's sight, Kareth raised his eyebrow.  The girl was sharp.  "Miss Kiana is correct.  I am not familiar with healing but I my observations of the magics which caused the wound led me to the same conclusion.  The chalise has to be destroyed to restore her eyesight."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Jadira arrives with Lasuri, looking generally well-rested, but weary with sadness. While Zeru has a near death and a crippling on his conscience, she remembers the deaths of fifteen men and women that her efforts alone could not stop.

Still, the Wood Aspect is not one prone to wallowing in her sorrow, at least not publicly. Wearing her green coat with the red blossoms, a clean ivory blouse embroidered with ivy vines, sturdy dark trousers and boots, she stands proudly with her Captain, bowing respectfully to Queen Sylpheel and the mountainous visage of Rakatau. She's not forgotten her manners yet, even many years removed from the Realm.

"The Chalice will need to be destroyed for more than that," she says grimly, though gazing with compassion at the eyeless Melusine. "That Chalice will no doubt attract other ambitious Lintha to us given time, not to mention seadogs that might want to test their mettle against us. Still," and Jadira glances at Lasuri, touching the Alliance Captain's arm, "the Ring of Danaa'd seems to be keeping it from being more than an annoyance. I thank you for that, Queen of the Nymphs."

"And all of you, for fighting with all of us, even when you did not have to. Without everyone I am sure the Spring Dryad would be sunk beneath the waves today."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

"Miss Thornbloom's right. This thing will need to be put out of commission permanently before we're out of the woods." The Captain looks at his hand, and the chalice that is still in it - as long as it is in one piece, he will have to bear it with him. After having some time to slow down, it becomes more apparent that the Captain took a beating during their last sortie. He looks haggard and tired, as if a heavy weight keeps his usual jovial and spirited demeanor to rise completely to the surface.

"It's still not beaten. It's been defeated, and it can't directly take control of me or use its powers on me, thanks to the ring the Queen bestowed me." At these words, the Captain turn to the Nymph Queen, bowing to her gratefully and respectfully. "But it can still talk to me, and show me things. I think it'll try to erode me that way since it can't actually dominate me... Which means I still have to be careful too."

"And you should all be as well - this thing seems to be able to communicate and influence by mere contact, so I have to be careful to let no one else tough this thing. On that subject..." Lasuri turns to Kareth then, nodding slightly. "I know you likely need a rest, Mister Kareth, but I have a few things I'd like to ask you - I need some sort of container for this thing. One I can carry with me, and one I can use to lock it up when it's in my room. I don't want to risk it even brushing with anyone by mistake... Not after the heavy cost we paid to get it here."

The Captain inhales then, and a tired, but strongly genuine smile shines towards the other members of the Alliance. "Miss Thornbloom's right, people. You've given everything you could, and then you took another step and gave some more. I won't forget that, ever. I never would have been able to do this if it was just us... The Alliance has grown since our long trek from the far East, and it's strength has been immeasurably increased."

"So thank you, all of you, for all of your blood and sweat and tears. I said it before, and I say it again - you people are what makes this dream possible at all. You are the Alliance. You all made a crazy dream possible, so you should all be given your credit for making this all possible."

The Captain looks at the Chalice in his hands then, and nods. "Some of us have sacrificed themselves for this... But the Alliance will prevail. I promise you all that we'll see this through no matter what... And not even the might of Malfeas will be able to ignore the might of this band of ragtag misfits."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Queen Sylpheel gracefully returns the various bows and greetings from others, Alliance and otherwise. She is clad in what looks to be a gown of pure ocean water, a deep indigo compared to her paler blue skin - a rather fitting color to meet the Alliance with. Atop her brow shines the tiara of her station, and she supports her sister Melusine with one arm, who is dressed more simply, an ornate bandeau and skirt of the same deep watery substance.

Rakatau rumbles approvingly at the gathered group, particularly Kiana for her gracious reply and Lasuri for his sentiments. "I KNOW OF THE PLIGHT OF MELUSINE, CURSED BY THE CHALICE. I UNDERSTAND VERY WELL WHAT TAINT IT WILL MEAN FOR ALL CREATION SHOULD IT BREAK FREE. LISTEN TO THE STRONG WORDS AND CONVICTION OF CAPTAIN LEOMARIS. FIND SOLIDARITY IN ONE ANOTHER, AS I HAVE WITH MY NYMPH AND JOKUN HOST. YOU WILL NEED THE COURAGE YOU HAVE SHOWN YESTERDAY TO SERVE YOU THROUGH THE QUEST FOR THE CHALICE'S DEMISE."

"That the Chosen of the Dragons would have a care for my sister in her suffering truly warms my heart," adds Sylpheel, her sapphire eyes shimmering. She doesn't seem to have noticed Zeru's hesitation yet, or is politely leaving him be. "In the end, it is you and yours who suffered the greatest losses. When we arrived with Rakatau's child, I fear it was too late to do more than end the battle." The island ship trembles slightly when he is mentioned, and Sylpheel kneels to stroke his broad back, serving as the deck that the Terrestrials and Elementals are gathered on. "You have done well, do not be disturbed. In time we will correct what we can, though we cannot bring back the dead."

The island behemoth continues in its massive, earthshaking voice. "TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, KIANA, DAUGHTER OF KIANDO. I HAVE CONSULTED WITH THE ELEMENTAL COURT OF EARTH. THERE ARE THREE AREAS IN THE WEST WHERE ONE MIGHT FIND THE POWER TO DESTROY THE CHALICE. ONE IS NORTHWEST, PAST THE LAND ONCE CALLED OKEANOS, TOWARD THE DEAD LANDS OF SKULLSTONE. THE SECOND IS BENEATH THE WAVES, BEYOND WAVECREST, IN THE DROWNED METROPOLIS OF THE PELAGIALS. THE THIRD LIES SOUTHEAST, PAST THE LINTHA'S STRONGHOLD OF BLUEHAVEN, TOWARD THE FIRE MOUNTAINS OF THE SOUTHERN THRESHOLD. AN-TENG, THE CITY OF FLOWERS... I BELIEVE YOUR NEXT PATH SHOULD BRING YOU THERE."

OOC: Just a little contrived, but I'd wanted the group to go to An-Teng since, what, the beginning of the game? ;)

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Captain Fairwind coughs a little uncomfortably somewhere between the speeches of Lasuri and Rakatau, but waits for a point when the comments from others die down to speak for himself. "Excuse me sirs and ladies - this is all quite touching, and I am honestly humbled by your desires to bring an end to this vile artifact of the demon-pirates."

As Fairwind goes on, his voice becomes surer and more certain, though he knows his sentiments are not commonly shared. The Wavecrest captain brushes away a lock of dark purple hair that has fallen over his eyes, and continues resolutely.

"However, my crew has already lost about twenty percent of its strength. We only came in the first place to watch the Alliance while they dwelled in Wavecrest waters. I believe I have made enough of an assessment at this point. I must apologize to all of you, but I think that the Falchion has outdone its involvement in these affairs."

Loukan Hirdu, on the other hand, listens with great interest to the words of Rakatau. He hasn't had much chance to speak with the people of the Alliance for days, but he doesn't seem unhappy in the slightest. Physically, the rotund, mustachioed Captain looks healthy enough; the ministrations of Dragon-blooded and artifact healing saw to that.

"Go on and run back home, Fairwind," Hirdu says with a hard grin, just short enough of mocking to be polite. "I for one am proud of my participation in the ruin of Hazhain Sul. If I could be of further aid to the Alliance I'd be thrilled. I am a Southerner born and bred, if you go that way I can guide you true."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

"We will carefully consider your wise council, Great Rakatau.  Thank you."  Kiana said as she, too, bent down to stroke the Spirit Island's back in comfort.  "The Child of Rakatau did very well yesterday, as well did your Nymphs and Jokun, your majesty.  The blow you dealt was decisive and sure--many more lives would have been lost if not for your swift hand."  Kiana had given the orders, of course, but she was more than away that there was a large difference between giving orders and executing them.  War was very, very different when you were on the front line, which explained largely why Kiana was constantly fighting along side her men.  A fond saying of her Father kept her there...'He who leads from the back gets it in the rear'.

Then, perhaps surprisingly, Kiana turned to address Captain Fairwind, of all people.  Through out her dealings with the Captains of Wavecrest, Kiana's interactions with them had been little else than a salute and a nod, but now her soft, calm voice rang out toward Fairwind as he tried to pry himself from the meeting.  "Of course, Captain.  No doubt you have a papers to finish and reports to file, all very important tasks for an efficient naval force.  Before you go, however, might I be so bold as to inquire where you received your training as an officer of Wavecrest?"  In truth, it seemed almost like a compliment, asking where he learned how to sail and command.  In truth, Fairwind had lost the least amount of men, and had been dealt the least amount of structural damage to his vessel--surely that meant he was a masterful tactician.  Surely.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

"WHATEVER YOU DECIDE, YOU WILL HAVE THE FAVOR OF THE EARTH AND THE WATER WITH YOU," says Rakatau with satisfaction.

The island ship makes a contented sound as he is comforted. Finally Queen Sylpheel straightens, and accepts Kiana's comments with a slight bow. "Perhaps it is futile to wish that one could have done more, but the sentiment is still there."

Next to her, Melusine remains silent, as if she were also struck mute by her ordeal.

Captain Fairwind gives Kiana an odd look, but answers promptly, "The Naval Academy of Abalone, of course. Wavecrest's mighty navy has shielded the homeland from a West fraught with pirates and sinister powers for countless generations." The purple-haired man lifts his chin sharply, his eyes gazing at Kiana with a sliver of disapproval before staring Hirdu down with unmasked dislike. "My departure is not for mere paperwork, lady, nor is it for cowardice, Loukan Hirdu. My duty is to Wavecrest, and your Alliance will soon be leaving it. I have completed the task set out for me by my superiors, and thus I will return home."

"Say what you like," Hirdu snorts, even less scrupulous than Kiana in his opinion. "You won't be able to affect our opinions while you are back on your luxurious island retreat."

OOC: Rakatau and others still have more business to address but want to give others a chance to respond first. :)

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

"Thanks for the thought, Mister Kareth - I know what you come up with will be worthwhile. We can meet later on our own time to discuss that matter more at length, if you're amiable to that." The Captain nods and smiles, before taking a more somber expression, turning back towards the others.

"I do really think we all wish we could have done more. For your Jokun, mighty Rakatau. For Queen Sylpheel's sisters, too. Even for our own people." Lasuri risks a side glance to Jadira at that statement. He knows she will feel saddened at the lost of those who died defending the Dryad, under her command. He knows exactly how she feels as well, having been in her very position in previous battles - it is a heavy burden to bear, and he'll help her with it any way he can.

"The only way we can do this honor is if we see this damnable object destroyed. I won't dictate where we go - that's for all of us to decide - but I'd suggest we carry it Southwards, to An-Teng. We'll be in Lintha territory which is not so good, but the plus side is that we were headed there and are already prepared for that trip, and we also have Captain Hirdu willing to guide us. That's going to be risky, but An-Teng would still be my choice based on the fact that we just plain know more about what we're stepping in than in the other locations."

Finally, Lasuri gazes at Captain Fairwind, and nods tersely, a faint smile on his lips. He seems a bit more pragmatic about Fairwind's actions that Kiana or Hirdu - perhaps because Lasuri never really expected much heroics or selfless behavior from the navy man. After all, the Sea Drake sees Fairwind's presence for what it really is: a glorified escort, so the Wavecrest Navy can ensure that the Alliance is not out to endanger or inconvenience the island nation in any way or form. Hopefully, the last battle showed him the Alliance's true colors, which is what Lasuri hopes for.

"You're in your own waters, Captain Fairwind. You don't need our permission or even our agreement to leave us. You've got the info you wanted to have, so you can take it back and make your reports." Lasuri stares at the man then, and something in his gaze is different than the way he looks at the other people assembled here. It is not disrespectful, but there is a palpable sense of ideals separation between the two men as the Sea Drake speaks.

"Just carry the word of what you saw here. I think that should satisfy your people as to the how and why concerning the Lintha's recent odd behaviors. You've seen what they seek firsthand. And although you should remain guarded in case they come by again, they're not likely to bug you much now. Long as we have this here, they'll be coming after us, and we're leaving your lands." Lasuri shakes the chalice as he speaks, to illustrate the object he is speaking of.

"The only thing I ask is that you respect those that died for this. The Lintha will leave you alone, but that's due to the sacrifice of many brave souls all around who gave their lives for that to happen. Honor that when you pass the word along. Tell people that it's those sacrifices that drove the Lintha off."

"Otherwise, just leave as you please, Captain. I'm sure your duties don't ask that you justify yourself to us."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Zeru remains oddly silent at this meeting. His typical discomfort at such multiplied by his supposed failure. He listens well and weighs every single comment, cringing almost at the words the Captain spoke to the Queen of the nymphs. It was not directed as such but it was as if he was speaking of Zeru particularly.

Zeru is not surprised nor saddened by the Departure of the Captain Fairwind. It was the navy afterall, and the good Captain held much more apart from the Alliance than mere protocol. Zeru shakes his head and lets the man have his own way.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kareth simply looked at Fairwind's back as he spoke to the captains.  Unlike Kiana and Hirdu, Kareth did not hold the man in contempt for not going with them.  He too had belonged to a military at one point.  And not just any military.  He had belonged to the 7th legion.  The military mindset was something all Lookshians understood.  This man had been given orders by a commanding officer and those orders did not include risking his life or his crew in pursuing the Alliance's agenda.  These people were not their allies.  They simply had a shared interest to which Wavecrest had not committed as fully as the alliance.  So Fairwind gets to claim part of the destruction of the Lintha and the Alliance gets to keep the chalise.  If they ever met the man again, Fairwind would probably be promoted for his participation in the fight against the Lintha.  Most probably in command of a better ship and well on his way to becoming and admiral.  This was simply the business of war.  The engineer hadn't counted on the navy to stick around after the mission had been completed and he didn't begrudge Fairwind for leaving in the least.

As Lasuri spoke to Fairwind, Kareth noted the differences in the two.  The image struck seemed to represent the difference in his life now verses his life in the threshold.  Military versus civilians.  In many ways, he understood Fairwind more than Lasuri.  But with that understanding came another realization.  His fate would never again lay with men like Fairwind.  If he was to find answers to questions, it would be in the company of men like the ones of the Cobalt Alliance.  And after the answers, perhaps the new beginning that Captain Leomaris spoke of often.

Tageru stood silently and waited for the others to finish. He was never the one to enjoy formalities, even when they were necessary, as they were now. He learned that as a Dynast well, but he still never liked getting involved in things. Only when the captain mentions that they will be leaving for An-Teng he nods slightly, mostly for himself, as if this decision pleased him.

As the Wavecrest captain announces his departure, Tageru simply gives him a formal military salute and bows slightly, without saying a word.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kiana narrowed her eyes at Captain Fairwind as his snide reply.  "With all due respect, Captain, it is not Wavecrest you serve, but her people.  And I pray that when the day comes that you are called upon to protect their lives, just as yesterday we protected their freedoms, I pray you show more compassion and steel than what you gave to the Cobalt Alliance last night.  The Lintha was not attracted to us from the onset, Captain--they knew of the Chalice as well as we did.  And were we not here to stop them from gaining control of the cursed thing, these waters would be running red with the blood of not just your people, but every life within their reach."  She paused, no doubt infuriating the Captain with her words, but caring less for it.  She was being civil, after all.  She was not yelling, screaming, or even crying for the loss of the Cobalt Alliance, or the lives that Fairwind could have saved were he more of a Captain.  "Every Captain has a duty to uphold.  Sometimes going above and beyond that duty is not only the brave thing to do, but it is also the right thing to do.  I'm sure the Abalone Academy would have been in support of your discretion, and we are thankful for what support you did give.  So thank you, Captain Fairwind, for your service, and Godspeed."

Kiana's anger, unlike with Rakatau, was cold now, no longer the seething fire that she felt within Rakatau.  Her memories were her own again, and she did not have images of the darkest kind invading her mind--but her anger was justified, in her own mind at least.  Her Father had sought to spare as many lives as possible on both sides of whatever conflict he was a part of, and though not every man and leader could be as great as Kiando, that would not stop Kiana from holding them to the stanard.  Lasuri, though not the greatest military mind, was still an amazing leader.  And Kiana had no doubt in her mind what Lasuri would have done in Fairwinds place, or any one of them.  The military mindset was alien to some, and while Kiana understood it, that did not mean she liked it, or thought it right.  The military shielded cowards like Fairwind, who hid behind regulations and orders.

She shook her head, looking instead to Lasuri, thinking that maybe her words would have brought anger from her Captain, but tossing the errant thoughts aside.  She was part of the Alliance--speaking out of turn was not a problem.  Her opinion was important, and she would not let those feelings lay idle in her heart and mind.  "I am in favor of An-Teng as well, Catpain."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Captain Fairwind raises his eyebrows as he is suddenly the focus of attention for the Alliance. He is at the least disciplined enough to keep himself restrained, though his jaw clenches when Lasuri addresses him, and his brow raises challengingly toward Kiana. "That is correct, Miss White-Fist, that is what you are named now is it not? As a soldier of Wavecrest, I protect her people. This includes all of the members of my crew, all of them born and raised on the Wavecrest Archipelago."

As he continues Kiana has the feeling Fairwind hardly even considers her more than an inexperienced child, despite her prodigious mind for the art of war. And that is on top of the fact that Wavecrest men dislike sailing women to begin with. That attitude of veiled condescension is so familiar to her from her years on the Crimson Isle that her insides feel curdled to remember it.

"I still lost men in the last battle, for exactly the reasons you spoke - for I knew that cup could mean a terrible future for my homeland. But I could have just as well made a tactical retreat, and returned with all the might of First Captain Buruku's fleet for a more decisive victory. I did not have to sacrifice the lives of twenty good men to aid yours. Yet I did. Perhaps you shall remember the same." Fairwind's dark eyes glitter as he bows, short and stiffly, and turns away from Kiana to move toward the gangplank leading back to his ship.

As he does so, he passes several of the others. The Wavecrest Navy Captain nods imperceptibly to Kareth, as if recognizing the unspoken similarities between their backgrounds. His gaze brushes past the stoic Tageru and the quietly discomfited Zeru, until finally he pauses a few paces from Lasuri, briefly meeting his eyes. "My report will not do you dishonor. Though I may not vouch for every one of your men, as a whole I have seen the Alliance fight courageously against an enemy common to us all."

"However, having seen the Chalice's power with my own eyes, I must admit that Wavecrest would be ill equipped to be its keeper. For the sake of national security, I will recommend to the First Captain and the Feathered One himself that you are barred from returning to our waters until you have disposed of it."

"May the wind blow fortuitously at your back, Cobalt Alliance." Fairwind hardly even gives Jadira a glance, saluting Lasuri before departing for good.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Jadira keeps her thoughts to herself for the majority of this exchange. She had been there the entire time. She knows that Fairwind held back and allowed the Dryad to take the brunt of the attack, as the Lintha Dara-Said recognized her as the flagship of the Cobalt Alliance. His excuse, of course, was that the Lintha's quarrel was with the Alliance, not with Wavecrest.

Only when Fairwind's eyes seem to skip her over does the Wood Aspect speak, "Don't worry, we'll bring no ill fortune to Wavecrest. I suspect there are many who would refuse us port should they know what we have seen and faced. That is our curse, and our pride. We do what few others would dare, for the sake of all the West. But we also do this because we are free to, unbound by other duties."

The brunette shrugs, letting Fairwind go whether he heard her words or not. She ought to be angrier, perhaps, and she feels a surge of warmth toward Kiana for expressing it despite etiquette. Still, Jadira has no delusions that her words would change Fairwind's heart, and she would rather look toward the future, than continue to lament what is past.

She turns to face her fellow Alliance members again, along with massive Rakatau and the graceful Queen. "Anyway, I really doubt we're ready right now to charge right into the deadlands, or go on a full scale undersea expedition. So let's start with the choice that makes most sense and works with our agenda."

After everyone else had said cast their vote, Kareth shrugged his shoulders.  "I supposed there is logic in that destination.  I would like to go to Skullstone, but it isn't pressing at the moment.  And as Miss Thornbloom suggested, we should recoup our man power before heading there."

Jadira glances with genuine curiousity at Kareth when he speaks his own opinion. "That isn't the first time you've mentioned going to Skullstone. Have you business on the isle of the dead?" The thought of why has not crossed her mind until recently, as recent signs have made her wonder... "The Alliance has yet to have any significant dealings with Skullstone, so if you've connections in that area it would be most helpful to us. Honestly, if we haven't lost so many men and suffered so many injuries, I would suggest splitting up."

Kareth meets Jadira's eyes cooly, and speaks in measured even tones, "No.  I have no connections.  But according to Captain Hirdu, there is someone there I wish to meet.  He might have some answers I seek.  Besides, the Alliance is already partially divided.  Doing so further might prove to be unwise.  The matter isn't pressing enough to warrant risks."

"I see," Jadira says, nodding as her memory is jogged. She remembers vaguely the moment Hirdu told him about this, in the midst of their planning to come to Rakatau. There was a name... was it Tiger Shadow? It seemed personal, so she decides not to pursue her curiosity further at this time.

The Dryad's first mate continues with a small smile. "However, Kareth, considering you've come along with our crazy plans so far, I at least feel it appropriate to pledge that we will bring you to Skullstone as soon as circumstances make it feasible. I think Lasuri would only agree." Her emerald gaze shifts toward her Captain and long-time companion, confirming the approval she knows would be there.

"Miss Thornbloom?" Zeru asks quietly and seriously. His carefree grin absent from his face. He blows a few strands of dark blue hair away from his face, as if thinking of the right words to say. "How fares Antov?" He decides to start with. More would come, but for now it is all he dares to ask.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

It took a tremendous amount of will power for Kiana to simply charge the man then and there.  Kiana was not just some little girl, despite appearances to the contrary.  She was the daughter of Kiando Mehkong, the rightful heir not only to the Crimson Isles, but the heir to the legacy the great tactician had left behind.  She knew things about warfare that Captain Fairwind couldn't imagine.  Strategy that could make or break nations--and she was just a child.  What right did he have to treat her with such dismissive contempt?  Her eyes stared hard at the Captain as he took his leave, a silent vow growing in her heart to show the man who he dismissed so freely.  A gentle tug at that same heart however, growing from the breastplate she wore under her dress, took her attention away.  Her father was concerned about what she was feeling, and though he was certainly not happy with the Captain, she distinctly got the impression that her father did not want her to dwell on the matter.  And for her part, Kiana agreed.

Seeing that Jadira was busy talking to Kareth, Kiana stepped in to answer Zeru.  "Antov is doing just fine, Zeru.  I checked on him last night.  His wounds are closed and his condition is stable.  He is going to be just fine, given rest, though he can probably due with another session with the Needles."  Kiana said, happy to have something to take her mind off of The Captain.  Then, if Zeru had no further questions, she would turn to look at the Queen and Rakatau.  "And what you two, great ones?  Do we leave you well enough to continue with your lives as you did before the Chalice cursed you?  Is there anything else we can do?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

The elementals seem uninterested in the quarrels of humans, but are once again engaged in the conversation when the topic swings back toward the chalice quest. "AN-TENG ITSELF IS NOT YOUR ULTIMATE DESTINATION, ONLY A BEGINNING," clarifies Rakatau. "THERE YOU MAY FIND ALLIES WHO CAN GUIDE YOU TOWARD A TRUE END FOR THE CHALICE, SO THE LAND AND SEA SPEAKS TO ME. YOU WILL KNOW THEM, FOR THEY WILL BE CLAD IN GOLD, AND THEY WILL HAVE NEED OF YOU."

"Should you dare it, your path may bring you to the lands of the Dead and the Undersea, the courts of the Fae and the Elements. You may one day stand between the Wavecrest Navy and the pirates of Coral. You may be faced with the might of Bluehaven and the Realm, with the Sun and the Moon at your back." As the Nymph Queen makes these statements - truth or simply hypothesis? - her sapphire gaze meets the eyes of every gathered Alliance member, even the reluctant Zeru. Melusine stands straighter, now, as if expectant of something. "With or without the Chalice, you navigate a storm of shifting alliances and dangerous powers. Truly, it is you who should be helped, not we."

"DO NOT WORRY FOR US NOW, YOUNG KIANA," says Rakatau as gently as one can for a being so massive. "I AM REGAINING MY STRENGTH, AND IN TIME NEW JOKUN WILL ARISE TO REPLACE THOSE WHO WERE LOST."

"And we would help make up for your losses, as well," pronounces Queen Sylpheel.

She touches Melusine's back, signaling her to speak. The blind nymph takes a tentative step forward, then a more decisive one.

"I would accompany you," Melusine declares, her voice surprisingly strong despite the nightmare the Chalice put her through. "Ten of my sisters and myself, as representatives of the Queen."

"FIFTEEN JOKUN WILL GO WITH THEM, INCLUDING THE FIVE WITH KIANA," adds Rakatau with a stirring of pride in his voice. "THEY WILL RIDE THE YOUNG ISLAND, MY CHILD IN SPIRIT. WILL YOU TAKE THEM WITH YOU, AS OUR PART OF YOUR ALLIANCE?" It is ultimately Lasuri's decision, of course, but Rakatau scans every one of them for dissent or doubt.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

"Jadira's pretty much spot-on with that. I'm a bit iffy about the circumstances, but as long as we have this Chalice with us, things are going to be kinda tense and sometimes downright dangerous with us. So... That has to take priority, I'm afraid. But you're a member of the Alliance just like anyone else, Mister Kareth, so your wishes will be addressed when we're done with this. That's the least we could do for your loyal services."

When Melusine speaks, Lasuri nods to her, but he does not have the expression of one who will bow down to such difficult occurrences. "My Queen - we're not a group that has much influence in the West, as the dealing with Captain Fairwind probably taught you. We don't have that many people backing us up, just those you see here. We don't have much resources outside of what we can make while out seafaring, and what we can gain through our wits and hard work. All we have is our will and our word. Now when we said to Rakatau we were going to help get rid of this damnable Chalice, we all meant every word we said - and we're not willing to back down until we've seen our whole promise through. It's going to be dangerous and hard... But that's pretty much our bread and butter, it seems." A soft smile lights up the Captain's face, but it is tinged with a hint of shadows - perhaps at the thought of those who lost their lives for these ideals.

As for Rakatau's proposition, Lasuri nods and folds his arm across his chest, leaning back slightly while a smile tugs at the corner of his mouth. "If you or any of your servants and comrades want to join the Alliance, they're more than welcome, Mighty Rakatau. Anyone wanting to join in and share these dreams and ideas with us is welcome to come along, if they want to share in the work. But as for whether or not they can be the crew on that stone ship... I can't respond to that. It's not my ship." The captain's smile widens, and he turns towards Kiana before returning his gaze to Rakatau.

"That's your child in spirit, and you're doing us a great favor by having this ship join the Alliance. But someone's got to Captain it, and I can't do it. I've already said to Miss White-Fist that she was responsible for that ship, and that still stands if you and her are willing to maintain that. And if you are, then it's up to Captain White-Fist to see who she wants in her crew."

"Worry not, if the new Captain gets picky I'll be more than happy to find another spot for your loyal and devoted Jokun." Lasuri finally says, turning to Kiana with a teasing smile.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Though it had not happened much thus far in her career within the Cobalt Alliance, Kiana found her face turning a deep and flushed crimson.  She had not expected to be presented with the opportunity to be Captain once more--she had, in fact, convinced herself that it was simply a required part of the melee, a careful use of resources.  She had not even allowed herself the fantasy that it would be a permanent fixture.  Captain White-Fist?  It wasn't even logical.  She had no real seafaring experience, and had only been part of the Cobalt Alliance for a short time, relatively speaking...but it was true that she believed in it with every fiber of her being, and would do everything in her power to see these people succeed in their (and HER) endeavors--and perhaps that was one of the contributing factors to Lasuri's decision.

"I..." She stammered, blushing fiercely still as she tried to gather herself.  Being told to take command during battle was one thing.  This was something else altogether.  "It would be the greatest honor imaginable." She said and she gave a low bow to both Lasuri and Rakatau.  She turned to look at the Jokun behind her, her 'Honor Guard', perhaps to see what their reaction to this new post would suddenly entail--but seeing as those five had insisted on following her to the Dryad, she had a fair inkling at what their disposition might be, and it only caused her blush to run deeper.  "We will happily take you into the Alliance, Melusine, and your people as well, if...you would accept me as your Captain." She gave a soft, but certain smile as she rose from her bow.  Captain White-Fist.  Under her dress, her breastplate practically glowed with pride as her Father's heart soared for his child.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Melusine listens solemnly to the reply from Lasuri, then Kiana, turning her head toward each in turn. Her blindness is a strange one, as a spirit ought to be able to form a new shape with eyes regenerated, given time and Essence. Yet the way she moves and gestures, depending more securely on her sense of hearing and touch, seems to indicate quite strongly that she is truly blinded and it is something so ingrained that even her supernatural senses are bereft of sight.

"Thank you, your hearts are both kind and noble. Though I am blind in body and spirit, I can still serve a purpose in your Alliance, if only as a spiritual leader of my sisters." Melusine's expression is hard to read without eyes to gauge it by, but she touches a hand to her heart and bows her shoulders slightly - a mix of thankfulness, of relief and sorrow, and then, when she lifts her chin again, determination. "The demon-chalice scoured my mind and tainted my spirit. Knowing what I have seen, what it can do," and here she gives a violent shudder, "I won't stand by while others do the work of ridding it from the world. I would trade my sight away forever if that would see it destroyed."

Then her face points toward Kiana, or at least the direction she last heard her voice. "I do not know you well yet, Kiana White-Fist, but I believe you would do a splendid job. And I already know the jokun will follow you to the ends of the Earth." Behind her the jokun murmur solemnly in assent.

"Then it is settled," says Queen Sylpheel with great satisfaction. "So long as as Melusine is with you, my heart goes with you as well." She steps up to Melusine and embraces her, before gesturing a pair of nymphs to guide her beloved sister. Eight more nymphs and ten jokun join Melusine to assemble alongside the Cobalt Alliance members.

"And Captain Leomaris, will and word are the best any being can give without turning to outside sources of power and motivation. Danaa'd has blessed you at least in part because you accept power with humility, responsibility with honest determination, and react to changing situations in unconventional but no less effective ways. You may not believe it now, but in time, the Alliance may be the saviors of all the West." The Nymph Queen gestures to the group of mortal, Exalts and now Elementals gathered before her, her small smile a mysterious one. "That all depends, of course, on all of you."

"Excellent," says Captain Hirdu, smoothing down his oiled mustache. With Fairwind gone and the Falchion preparing to sail, he looks happy as a clam! "Now when do we get started?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Great Rakatau rumbles approvingly, apparently also quite pleased by the proceedings. "YOU MAY LEAVE AT YOUR LEISURE. THOUGH YOUR JOURNEY TO THE CITY OF FLOWERS WILL BE A LONG ONE, SO YOU MAY WISH TO LEAVE SOONER THAN LATER. WE DO NOT HAVE MANY SUPPLIES HERE THAT WOULD SUSTAIN HUMANS, SO MOVING TO A PORT FOR SUCH NEEDS WOULD BE IDEAL TO YOU." Underfoot, the still-unnamed island ship quakes with a small thrill of excitement, eager to be away and see the world as promised.

"HOWEVER, SO LONG AS YOU REMAIN HERE, YOU ARE IN A SANCTUARY OF CALM. NO STORMS WILL TROUBLE YOU IN MY DOMAIN, AND THE FULL MIGHT OF MY JOKUN AND QUEEN SYLPHEEL'S NYMPHS WILL AID AND DEFEND YOU IF NEED BE."

"Please let us know if there is anything else you need," Queen Sylpheel adds graciously. Though she is addressing everyone, her eyes rest on Tageru, then Zeru, who have been mostly silent throughout the entire exchange.

Jadira addresses Melusine and the others joining the Alliance's side. She smiles at the blind nymph, knowing she cannot see it, but hoping she can at least somehow feel the sentiment. "Welcome to the Alliance, Melusine, and all of you. And the island ship, too. I have to say this is the first time I've ever had to welcome elementals to our team, so I'm not sure if there's any special etiquette. Spiritual matters were never my forte. But believe me when I say I'm glad to have you aboard."

"I'm not sure what sort of needs or preparations an island ship would have, but that is for Captain Kiana to find out, now isn't it." The brunette nods proudly at Kiana, remembering how meek the younger woman seemed at first, when she first joined the Alliance. "I ought to return to the Dryad to check on the patients, and see about whether we've got enough healthy bodies to set sail. Tageru, we'll probably need more help with the Satchel, if you don't mind."

She glances sympathetically at Zeru. "It's like Kiana said, Antov is going to be just fine. He's under the best care he can get in these waters."

"With your leave..." Jadira bows to Queen Sylpheel and Rakatau, and gives Lasuri's arm a gentle squeeze before heading toward the gangplank of the Dryad, her mind churning with all the preparations that need doing.

If there's anything at all I could do, tell me, whether it's using it to heal others or giving it to you or someone else to help. The only thing is:
In it is a hearthstone that belonged to my grandmother, and I got the rights to it when I Exalted. I can certainly borrow it if you need it to power the Artifact, but I cannot part with it permanently. It is a family heirloom, and it belonged to my family for generations, since before the Contagion.
" he says taking out the small glowing gem to show it to the others.
"As for what I want, there are some things I would want to do in An-Teng, but since we're going there anyway, then I am happy with our present situation. I will spend the time in meditation and practice." Tageru says very formally, and then looks over to Kareth.
"I have a few questions for you, but we can talk later. If there's one thing these past few years I've spent in the West have taught me it's that sea travel is long and boring for the most part. There's plenty of time for that..."

Kareth cocked his eye brow at the monk's request to speak with him.  Given everything that had happened, he wondered what the monk could possibly want to ask him, unless he knew more than he let on.  "I have a feeling I will be most busy with several projects but I'm certain we'll be able to find a moment of free time."

With that, Kareth did not wish to linger any more than necessary.  He had things he needed to do and preparations he needed to make.  He gave a quick bow those remaining and left just behind Kiana, seeming to pay little attention to Zeru's discomfort.

"Eh, there's no reason for thanks, Captain White-Fist. I told you I'd give you a chance to prove yourself, and you did. So you've pretty much earned what you got. Besides... When I was your age, people just dismissed me constantly, and shoved me aside 'cause I was pretty inconsequential where I came from. I learned to accept that, and I don't think I should have - or that anybody should. So I'm just trying to not repeat those same mistakes, and to give you a chance to shine when you deserve it. That's the least anyone can do."

With that last statement, the Captain turns towards Melusine, Sylpheel, and Rakatau, and bows low and respectfully to all of them. "You're doing us honor, all of you. I want you to know that we won't forget your kindness and your help - I've a long memory, believe me. I hope we can make it up to you one day."

Also sensing Zeru's shift in attitude, the Captain takes a step backwards, before falling in step with Jadira up the gangplank. He does exchange a nod with Zeru before stepping away respectfully, however - perhaps a nod of encouragement?

Silently, Lasuri makes his way back to the Dryad, leaving those remaining behind.

Hirdu is among the last to leave. The rotund Captain salutes the elementals and Zeru, ambles his way across the plank to the Dryad, then across to the Ambition.

Seeing the meeting dispersed, Rakatau turns his attention inward. The jokun head back into the maw of the great island, to bring in equipment that they or the ship will need. A few nymphs stay with Queen Sylpheel, or to remain as Melusine's guides; the others dive gracefully into the sea, either for some moment of relaxation or to check the island ship from below.

The Nymph Queen tilts her head at Zeru. "You are Peleps Zeru, correct? Is there something you still wish to speak about?" she asks the captain of the Marlena. "Please, feel free to speak openly."

Melusine turns her head toward his general direction, as well, a curious expression on her eyeless face.

"Yes majesty" Zeru says respectfully. "You and lady Melusine both. I wish to apologize..." He almost stops there but he swallows his pride and continues. "I wish to express my deepest apologies at the loss of your sight." He says to Melusine, "I was weak willed." He explains, sorrowfully. "When we came upon the chamber in which you were held, I froze. I saw you in pain, I saw the others move on, but I froze." Although Melusine can't see it Zeru lowers his head and thus the volume of his speech lowers as well. "If I had acted sooner I could have saved your sight." He finally admits.

He picks his head up again, and this time speaks more confidently, with the force of character that he is usually attributed. "I wish to make amends, I would do whatever is in my power to apologize for my cowardice."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

The two nymphs are silent for a time, after listening to Zeru's confession and request. After a moment, Queen Sylpheel starts to speak, a small frown creasing her fine features. "As it was in the heat of battle, Zeru, I am unsure I ought to truly feel anger or upset toward you..." But Melusine raises a hand and says quickly, "Let me answer him, sister."

Melusine steps forward gingerly, until she is close enough to find Zeru's arm and touch it gently. "You may not think so, noble Dragon-blood, but I think you tried the best you could. If you faltered before the horrors of the demon-chalice, I did worse... I succumbed to it. I helped hurt your friends because that horrible demon was in my head and I couldn't fight it off."

"I'm... scared." This close, Zeru can actually feel the blind nymph trembling. "I know I'll be traveling with the Chalice close by and I'm frightened. The horrors I saw inside, how it tainted my thoughts, how it made me believe all my sisters and the world would be dead! I am still upset with myself for succumbing, too. So I travel with you for the same reason you come to us with your confession, because I want to better myself. I want to be stronger, and I want to help take out the Chalice that almost turned me into a monster. And I think it is with you humans, who know much more than we elementals about growth and change, that I can accomplish this."

"Melusine..." Queen Sylpheel seems deeply affected by her sister's words, but lets her continue.

"If there's anything I would ask you, Zeru, it would be to treat me as you would your comrades. Accept me as one of yours, protect me when I cannot help myself. And one day, we will break even with our pledges." Melusine steps back, and presses a hand to her heart, like she did in response to Lasuri and Kiana earlier.

Zeru was afraid that they would deny his request for several long moments before they answered.

But still when Melusine started to speak, and he felt her fear he couldn't help but gently touch her hand reassuringly.

"It's a deal" Zeru says with still more of his confidence returning. "I sail with the alliance to deal with the cursed-goblet, and I will see to it that you are treated as crew. Whether you sail with the Captain, Miss... Captain White-Fist, or myself." Zeru takes her hand and grips it firmly. "You'll do fine in the Alliance, you got the spirit for it." He says warmly before releasing it. "Thank you Melusine, and thank you Queen Sylpheel." He says with a bow and a swish of his tattered coat. "I must admit this is my first time before royalty, but I get the feeling that I will be better for meeting you."

"I'll thank you as well, Peleps Zeru," says Melusine, gripping Zeru's hand when she feels it close over hers. "For showing such concern for me! I am truly moved. Still, I feel I owe the Alliance as much as you owe me."

Queen Sylpheel smiles and returns Zeru's flourished bow with a more sedate one of her own. "We are not so much like the royalty of humans, perhaps. Nor are we typical for our kind. Rakatau has been generous to us at our time of need, sheltering us from Storm Mothers and Deep Behemoths and Fair Folk, and so we are more inclined to be kind toward others. The powers of the sea and sky are not often kind, though as a sailor you know all about that."

"Humans such as yourself and the Alliance intrigue us. The potential in you mortals, when pushed by adversity, is astounding to see. I hope Melusine learns very much in your care." The Queen gazes fondly upon her sister. "I've no doubt one day she will see again."

"I have thought of asking aboard the Black Marlena, as Calliope and the others are already with Captain Kiana. But would I not cause trouble? We nymphs... are known for certain appetites," Melusine remarks tactfully, but not ashamedly. Zeru would understand what she means: not only are nymphs beautiful, but they have a reputation for being beguiling and seductive, pulling men beneath the waves never to arise again. "I would not be aboard to satisfy such cravings, but some may not believe it... I have heard you travel with a lady on board."

"I do, she is my first mate. But so long as you as you explain your situation I'm certain we can find a place for you." Zeru says, "There is one other catch, I would ask the ship if she will have you aboard. We have only met a scant time ago and I do not yet know her prejudices. All of the crew have had to meet her standards."

He waves back towards where the Marlena is moored, and then remembers her blindness so he gives her shoulder a gentle squeeze instead. "If you like, we may ask her, and then introduce you."

"Go, Melusine, meet your new allies and make friends among them," says Sylpheel gently, running a hand through her sister's hair one last time. "I will leave it to you, Peleps Zeru."

Melusine smiles at the reassuring squeeze on her shoulder, and replies earnestly, "I would like to meet the spirit of your ship, and your crew. I am unsure the ship will be pleased by me, given the reputation of my kind, but I will do my best to impress upon her my true intentions."

OOC: I'll make a Marlena thread shortly. This thread will stay open for when all the mini scenes reconverge.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

2nd Day of Resplendent Water, RY 768
Early Morning

Another day dawns, and it is time for the Cobalt Alliance to depart from the Seven-Day Island. Queen Sylpheel and a host of nymphs and jokun stand atop the crags of Rakatau's broad face, bidding them a final farewell.

"MAY YOU BE SUCCESSFUL ON YOUR QUEST TO VANQUISH THE CHALICE, BRAVE CHILDREN OF THE DRAGONS," rumbles the island behemoth. "I HOPE TO HEAR SONGS OF PRAISE SUNG IN YOUR NAME, AND FOR MY SON AKIHIRO." He uses the name Kiana gave the fledgling island ship, implicitly stating his approval of it.

"Take care of Melusine," says the Queen, to Zeru and Marlena in particular. Her face is serene and smiling; no tears shine on her cheeks. "From all of us who dwell in the depths of Great Rakatau, we wish you the best of luck."

The gathered elementals wave as the Dryad, the Marlena, the Ambition and Akihiro begin the journey southeastward toward An-Teng. When the ships are far enough that the island is a small speck on the horizon, Great Rakatau finally sinks back into the ocean from which he came, to rest there for the months to come.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Resplendent Water - Resplendent Earth, RY 768
3 months of travel

Traveling from the Wavecrest Islets to the southern mainland is a lengthy voyage, not cutting straight across the ocean but taking a more cautious route that intersects with several island settlements along the way. This ensures that supplies remain plentiful and the Alliance members' diet (at least, the human members) is supplemented with plenty of fresh food.

As such, the journey takes an entire season to complete, giving plenty of time for Kareth to make headway on his projects, and for officers and crew to get some much needed training. The delay is also necessary to give a chance for their allies on the Hammerhead to catch up with the group from their far western excursion.

Fortunately, the Cobalt Alliance's burgeoning fleet remains undisturbed for the majority of the trip. There are of course unpredictable storms, and now and then altercations with small-time pirates or sea creatures, but these are minor problems compared to what they have faced in the past.

OOC: For this portion of the trip -- which will likely be the last part of Chapter 2, besides meeting up with the Hammerhead -- please summarize IC how your character spends the 3 months of time. Mention any projects you work on, any training you do, whom you tutor with if applicable, and anything else you think is appropriate.

If you'd like to discuss OOC before posting your IC summary (or summaries, if multiples are needed) go right ahead! Just use the OOC game talk, or PMs if you prefer.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Zeru keeps himself busy during the 3 month voyage. He and his crew keep up work to make the Marlena shine as a ship among ships, and as they Sail Zeru focuses his abilities into being more efficient. His motions with the wheel, and his ability to communicate effectively with the Marlena all coming into play. His crew helps him as well, Brogan and Curran manning the sails, with the others helping them or working on other parts. It seems that Zeru has managed to get this down to a science. He's also worked on using his essence to aid the Marlena, further increasing her speed.

He takes his time gathering the crew once Antov is recovered. "Well since we've been seeing a lot of combat I feel that I should probably teach something about the way I fight. This is by no means mandatory and anyone who feels that their time can be better spent learning something else can do so, but I won't brook any lollygagging during this brief respite we seem to have stumbled into. We need to better ourselves on behalf of the alliance." Zeru will help Melusine should she wish to learn, or allow her to train herself should she wish to. "My style of fighting comes in 2 flavors." He says trying to put it simply. "Step 1 is to avoid being hit." He grins and does a backflip into a split to show his point. "The second... is hitting back." Without the chain he goes through a simple Kata, his arms flow like water moving back with and imaginary blow only to spin to the side and throw a powerful kick. "Which would you like to start with?" He of course invites Melusine to train with them, certain that Sunden or Himself would be more than happy to show her the proper motions although she can't see them.

However Zeru is not only teaching in his free time. He learns from anyone who would teach him. He spends some quality time with his flute, and asks Melusine if she would help him to develop harmony rather than just replicating the songs he's heard before. He takes the time to go over the lessons he has learned while in the House of Ancient Stone, and he continues his learning of the wonderful sounds the instrument can make.

He discovers that Antov is a wonderful cook and begins to learn from him as well. Learning how to mix ingredients and create something delicious.

One evening as the ships dock he even makes his way over to the Dryad to ask a favor of the people there. "Who might the purser on the dryad be?" He asks Jadira if he sees her.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

The 3 months of travel are a much quieter time than the excursion into Rakatau, that much is certain. Of course, for Lasuri, 'quiet' is not at all the same as 'not busy'.

A lot of things need doing during the trip. Bearing the Chalice, for one, is a burden that demands a lot out of Lasuri. Besides planning and helping out with the construction of containers alongside Kareth, Lasuri also has to maintain his constant vigilance to weather the mind trickery of the Chalice. It might not be able to use any of its supernatural means to try to influence Lasuri, but the damnable object still has a voice. It continually taunts and plays with Lasuri, trying to make him lose his composure and cause him to make a mistake in the hopes of getting free.

Much time is also spent organizing the Dryad's crew, which is now skeleton-sized. Many things have to be re-thought and rearranged since so many were lost, to insure that the remaining crew are not overworked. This is a difficult endeavor, but Lasuri is very diligent in trying to cut slacks for his people, even if he has to take on more work himself. During lulls, he keeps himself busy with training of his own, working hard to become the champion Danaa'd seems to wish him to be, and here and there giving some instruction to his fellow Alliance members when they seek his counsel or tutelage. Similarly, the Captain also goes to others when he hits a wall himself, listening to their advice to better his own skills.

Lastly, and more somberly, Lasuri spends a lot of time mourning and remembering those who have fallen. Anyone familiar with the Captain would see how heavily the losses weigh on him. Some of these people, like Leeds, had been with him since his youth, and seeing them go, as unavoidable as it was, is a sad thing for him. He makes certain that Jadira does not feel like she caused the deaths, however - likely, as he tells her, many more would have died were she not there to organize the defense. The two of them seem to mourn together, making certain to remember those who passed away to allow the Alliance to live on.

When Zeru comes to the Dryad and asks his question to Jadira, the Captain's familiar voice surges from behind Zeru. "I am, actually." He says, obviously having heard Zeru's inquiry. "It started because we didn't have anyone else, but in time it just stayed that way. Probably didn't think I had a head for numbers, right? I don't even believe it myself, half the time. But hey, I get all serious-like when I put my reading glasses on." He adds, with a wink.

"Hope I'm not barging in or anything. Miss Thornbloom can repeat what I said, if you'd prefer it being said in a more feminine voice." He smiles playfully at Jadira, before turning towards Zeru and extending a hand to shake.

"Always good to see you here, Captain. Hope everyone aboard the Marlena is doing fine. Now, is there anything this purser can do for you?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kiana, unlike the others, has a completely different set of adjustments to make during the three month 'lull'.  Specifically, the whole process of becoming a Captain!  Though her position was already settled, and Akihiro christened, there was the simple matter of Kiana getting to know her crew, getting to know her ship, and then getting to know herself as a Captain...the latter being the more difficult of the trio.  The Nymphs and the Jokun were not hard to get along with, and to be honest Kiana enjoyed their company greatly.  She was completely at ease with the male Jokun, partly because they were not the males of her species, but also because they shared the same elemental aspect, though the Jokun much more closely than Kiana, despite their insistence on calling her 'Princess of Earth', 'Earth Princess', and other variations of the same name.  The Nymphs were also a joy, as they were very different from mortal women, whom Kiana had also been greatly spurned by in the form of her mother.  All in all, it was kismet that Kiana had become Captain of a crew of Elementals.

This isn't to say that she didn't train.

On her own time, Kiana went to Captain Zeru in order to better round her martial prowess, and enhance her fairly weak avoidance techniques in her fighting style.  Earth endured, after all, and Kiana was very adept at blocking and shrugging off massive damage, but not so much at avoiding it altogether.  Though it went against her training, Kiana was quick to notice her own faults, and with Zeru's help, was able to greatly increase her adaptability in combat, and thus become a much stronger Martial Artist because of it.  She also went to Captain Lasuri to study under him--she admired the way he lead her troops, and she was not shy about letting the man know that she aspired to be a Captain of similar mettle--and would greatly appreciate his tutoring in becoming that very thing...and when she wasn't training with those two, she was helping those who would come to her, such as Kareth, who was curious about how to sharpen his own senses and his internal mettle, something Kiana was more than happy to help with.

There was also the matter of her Immaculate Training.  Though technically not an Immaculate Monk, Kiana's training by her father had lead her down the path of an especially rare variant of the Earth Dragon Form, designed solely by her Father.  Before she had no chance of furthering her studies, due to his death...but upon finding her Father's Breastplate, and his spirit that still rested within it, Kiana was able to commune with her Father.  It wasn't actual communication in terms of words, but by channeling her essence through the breastplate, the Smashfist and the Godkickers, he guided her hands to learn the next step in his powerful techniques...what he called the Diamond Fist.  And though she wanted badly to follow his training more, her other studies came first--she was already a very adept fighter--but a Captain had to be much more than that.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Kareth spent most of his time locked away in the forge of the Ambition.  For once he wasn't actually trying to avoid anyone.  He simply had work that needed to be done.  Fortunately, this wasn't work he considered difficult, but it was still time consuming.  He spent the majority of his days building the Cache Egg for Lasuri.  While he was able to easily and quickly construct the two containers asked for by the captain, the cache egg was a magical device and required time to construct.  During the time he focused on his work, he could slowly feel his mind starting to expand.  His thoughts became quicker and his memory better.  His studies from Lookshy flooded his mind.  It seemed as though no memory or idea was out of his grasp.  Simply being in the forge strengthened his connection to his natural element, causing his will to grow.  The physical exertion from the work also seemed to show itself in Karth's body.  While he was not actually more muscular, he did appear to grow more toned, sure of step, and generally sturdy.

The time he spent away from his project was divided among several endeavors.  Primarily, he focused on improving his ability to perceive minor details, but he also sought on ensuring that his mind would never be assaulted again like the chalice had done. For both of these he turned to Kiana.  When she was unavailable to help strengthen his mind, he turned to Zeru for help.

Throughout the trip, it became apparent to him that replacing his dissolved weapon with a more suitable one should be a priority.  Using his skill, essence, and enhanced memory, he crafted a Khopesh of excellent quality which excelled at defense.  However, he wished to ensure that this device didn't meet the same fate as his short sword.  Given the amount of time he spent on the Ambition, he began to take note of Hirdu demonstrating a great deal of proficiency in occult matters, particularly in the area of Thaumaturgy.  After spending a day reading notes prepared by the captain on more advanced techniques in the art of enchantment, Kareth decided to consult with the captain on the matter of his weapon and armor.

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Jadira does not waste her months idling by, either. She has also been deeply affected by the loss of the crew. Some of them had been there with her and Lasuri for the full eight years they have sailed with the Spring Dryad both I and II. When it is her time to mourn, far away from the eyes of her peers and subordinates, she weeps for them, and for her own carelessness.

Publicly, though, the First Mate of the Dryad shows herself to be resilient and determined in her efforts to improve herself. Her skill with bow and cannon is nearly at its peak, but as a leader of men, she lacks any sort of formal, military training. After speaking to Kiana about the prospect of training with her in the art of war, Jadira spends the first several days meditating on methods to increase the speed at which her mind absorbs new knowledge.

Afterward she focuses on working closely with Amon and the other nine artillerists and archers remaining with her. With Kiana's aid, she learns how to better coordinate their actions for devastating attacks. She also develops a much better understanding of strategy on a larger scale, dividing the battlefield into military units working together uniformly. After several days Jadira is able to apply this knowledge on her own to drill her troops, even extending some of that training to Amon so he can serve as her next in command.

While Jadira's natural talent with archery aids her in developing ranged unit maneuvers, her familiarity with performance art bolsters her efforts to inspire morale in her men. The Wood Aspect is confident in her voice, and her natural charisma continues to develop strongly throughout her rigorous training with the Dryad's Thorns. She even tries out a few performance tricks now and then to lighten the mood, knowing her men do not like to see her so sorrowful.

Early morning to late afternoon serves as her time with the Thorns, but afterward Jadira devotes herself to personal pursuits. First and foremost is her desire to gradually improve her sword-fighting skill. She insists to Lasuri from the start that she doesn't want to be coddled through training, so the sparring matches between them are intense, drawing crewmen in to watch from the sidelines. The Captain drills her to adopt proper stance and sword grip, illustrating every last opening in her defenses as she grits her teeth and swallows her pride.

On evenings she is not sparring, she instead seeks to discipline her mind. While in Wavecrest she'd bought a few tomes to study which focus on occult topics and obscure lore, aiding her in piecing together a couple of sorcery spells she has yet to learn, but would eventually master. Captain Hirdu of the Ambition has several more books in his own personal library, which she kindly asks him permission to read. One of these includes an initiate's treatise on the art of alchemy, which she borrows for a time and studies from cover to cover.

Keeping busy seems to take away the edge of the pain Jadira feels for the deaths of many old comrades. Still (perhaps at Lasuri's request... or order) she manages to find time to unwind and socialize, even if briefly. She smiles wearily when Zeru comes to speak with her. "Lasuri's right, we pretty much do our own finances. I keep the money safe, but he's turned out to be a better bookkeeper than I am. Is there something you're thinking of purchasing, Zeru?"

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Captain Hirdu seems surprised but pleased that Kareth and Jadira show interest in his library and workshop. For the majority of the trip he has been working non-stop to improve the quality of all metal weapons and armor employed by the Alliance, so the Ambition's forge is almost constantly aflame, except during the night hours and when stealth is required (the belching smoke-stacks make for rather poor subtlety). This makes the vessel quite hot, though Hirdu and his eight remaining crewmen seem well-suited for the heat, perhaps due to a Southern heritage.

The rotund captain is eager to address Kareth's concerns about equipment durability. He has in fact heard of an alchemy procedure that may work, but the process itself requires the very vitriol that claimed Kareth's last sword. As the only source of this substance nearby is the chalice that the engineer has recently labored to contain with lock, key, and artifice, Hirdu suggests a more Essence-intensive but otherwise safe and permanent way.

As an enlightened or possibly god-blooded mortal (he does not confirm or deny any guesses), even the first circle of sorcery is draining for Hirdu to wield. Thus he prefers thaumaturgy and mundane artifice whenever possible. However, after observing Kareth's crafting prowess with envy, he gradually reveals that he has mastered one important spell for strengthening items: the Ritual of Elemental Empowerment.

"An Earth Enchantment would easily convey the durability you're looking for," Hirdu informs Kareth grudgingly, "but I can only manage one enchantment a day, so don't overload me with work!"

Kareth's own affinity for fire seemed to cause him to not be bothered by the heat of the forge as well.  He simply arched his eye brows at the news of of Hirdu knowing sorcery.  Here was yet another person who could do what he could not.  "Thank you for you assistance Captain.  I have only two items I would like enchanted:  My breastplate and my khopesh.  I am in no particular rush to have these done, but I would like to get them done before we reach our destination.  Will twice in 3 months be too much?"  It's hard to tell with the engineer, but the last sentence might have been a joke.

"Oh, no, it won't be much trouble." Hirdu replies to Kareth with a small shrug and a smirk. "Just'll put me out of working for a couple days, but I've got a head start already on converting more of these Lintha swords."

"I'll just fit it somewhere in my queue of things to do. Do you have the weapon and armor with you already? If you'd rather not leave your things with me I'll signal over to the Dryad when it's time for me to take them. Otherwise..." He fetches a couple of empty trays from a shelf and puts them down on a counter. "Give 'em here and I'll get back to you in a few days."

Re: Chapter 2, Phase 5 - The Quiescent Sea

Hirdu puts the equipment in the trays and places them on his 'to do' shelf, and gives Kareth an appreciative nod.

"Don't feel obligated to, if you've better things to do. Your own projects will take much more time than shaping some quality into these cursed swords."

The Captain of the Ambition is true to his word, devoting the days necessary to conserve his Essence and enact the laborious dawn-till-noon ritual and incantation. He does his best to convince a couple jokun to help with the Earth enchantment, though of course he asks Captain Kiana's permission first. In less than a week, Kareth has both his armor and khopesh back, freshly enchanted to be as durable as any artifact.

Time continues to pass. The members of the Alliance have made various arrangements to aid one another in training, which prove fruitful in speeding up the learning process and broadening their skills. The crewmembers train as well, as sailors and combatants, crafters and students of lore, honing their minds and their senses to ensure they can be of use on board in a variety of ways. Some study occult knowledge so they can eventually learn thaumaturgy and differentiate various supernatural beings and powers. Donnegal, Saari and Amon practice speechcraft and group coordination on the Dryad, in case their Terrestrial leaders are indisposed.

Toward the end of the third month of the voyage, Jadira receives Wind-Carried Words from the Hammerhead, informing her that they would rendezvous within the day. This creates a whole new burst of excitement among the other four vessels of the Alliance, as it has been quite some time since they have all been united. It seems Treon and Darel were successful in their quest to seek the whereabouts of Cynis Megara, the Dynastic savant, though they have already since parted ways. Instead, they have some other surprises to unveil to their allies...

OOC: Edited things slightly to fast forward a bit. I'd like to definitely move on, so if you need any further interaction for the 3 month training period, please request a separate thread.
