Catessa Fallowfield - While traveling along, you spent the night in Sandpoint.  The town was all abuzz about the festival on the morrow.  Curious, you decide to check it out before leaving.

Garth Oakenshield - You arrived home a few days ago to find your girlfriend married to another man, and have spent the last few days in a bottle.  Today you woke up after sleeping the day away and found everyone was gathered at the festival.  Out of habit you put on your armor and strap on your sword.  All the drinks and food are at the festival.

Glum - You have been sent from your monastary to attend this festival as your last step for them and the first step on your lifes journey away from them.  You have spent a couple of days hanging around and helping out.

Naomi Armastance - After you left home, you had a dream.  A glorious temple made of sand, a swallowtail butterfly flies out of the door.  The next morning you overhear some travelers talking about a Swallowtail Festival, to celebrate the opening of the Sandpoint Cathedral.  A sign, You arrive on the day of the festival.  Due to everyone being busy at the festival, you are still dressed for travel at the end of the day.

Talis Revain and  Zer-wedula- You are on a ship (the Flying Cloud) from Riddleport.  Due to unexpected problems the ship is late and arrives on the day of the festival.  Due to everyone being busy at the festival, you are still dressed for travel at the end of the day.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first day of autumn dawns in the town of Sandpoint, and although a chill is in the air from the winds sweeping off the Varisian Gulf, the day promises to be a pleasant one as summer at last fades. The trees along the Lost Coast have begun to put forth their brilliant displays of red, Blue and yellow leaves and in a few weeks the nearby hills and forests will be aflame with bright autumnal colors. The air is crisp and refreshing and a light mist begins to lift from the streets of town. Though the sun has just peaked over the horizon, many of Sandpoint's residents have been awake for a few hours now.

As the rays of the morning sun lazily creep over the wood-shingles of the rooftops, visitors begin to fill the streets leading into town. Many are farmers and their families from outlying homesteads. Others are travelers from nearby towns and villages while some have come from as far away as Magnimar. The streets quickly become crowded as the residents and visitors make their way toward the illuminated stained-glass windows of a large, stone building: the new Sandpoint Cathedral.

The square before the church fills with the travelers and locals. Several merchant tents have already been set up ready to sell their wares of food, clothing, crafts, and souvenirs. The air is filled with excitement, for today is the Swallowtail Festival. On this day, the high priest Father Zantus will ask the gods to renew their blessing upon this holy site and consecrate the new cathedral. For five years the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in small wooden buildings since their church had been burned down, claiming the life of their beloved priest Ezakien Tobyn and his adopted daughter Nualia. Today, the townsfolk look to the future, and with the new cathedral, it will be as if the Sandpoint Fire had never occurred.

A hush comes over the crowd as four people emerge from the cathedral to stand at the top of the steps: Mayor Kendra Deverin, Father Abstalar Zantus, Sheriff Hemlock and Cyrdak Drokkus.

Mayor Devrin waits for the cheers to subside, then addresses the crowd.

"People of Sandpoint, it is with great honor and jubilation that I, Mayor Kendra Deverin, welcome you to the Swallowtail festival and the consecration of our new cathedral. It is also with great honor that I welcome the visitors to Sandpoint. Even Larz Rovanky has managed to tear himself away from his tannery to attend."

Many people chuckle warmly at this last remark, except Larz. The mayor continues:

"Today marks a turning point in our town's history. The opening of the new cathedral will bring many new days of peace and longevity to our town. Through perseverance and patience, you have waited five years for the day when you would have a permanent place of worship. For five years you have waited for the day when the blessing of the goddess would be completed. Rejoice, people of Sandpoint! The day is come!"

Shouts, cheers, and whistles erupt from the people. The clapping of hands and stamping of feet rumbles through the square as the mayor bows and descends the stairs. The applause continues as the Sheriff, Belor Hemlock, stoically moves to the center of the stairs as he waits for the cheers to subside.

The cheers continue, and the sheriff calls for attention with authority. When the gleeful throng quiets, Sheriff Hemlock solemnly addresses the crowd. "I must remind all, to be safe this evening around the bonfire. And now, a moment of silence for those who perished on this site five years ago." The sheriff lowers his head as a lull comes over the people and visitors of Sandpoint. After a moment, the sheriff leaves the steps and Cyrdak flamboyantly takes his place.

"Greetings, greetings! People of Sandpoint, and people not from Sandpoint. Greetings to all. I cannot tell you how absolutely excited I am to be standing upon the steps of this grand edifice!" Cydak turns and holds his arms out, gesturing to the cathedral. With a grin, and a flourish of his cape, he quickly turns back to the crowd. "For five years we have secured funding to give back what was lost. For five years, we have erected it stone by stone. It was no easy task, to be sure, but here it is! Look upon your new, marvelous cathedral, people of Sandpoint! Your hard work and faith has brought this magnificent structure to life and made dreams and hopes a reality!"

The crowd cheers thunderously, and Cydak holds out his arms, basking in the noisome din. After a moment, he holds up a hand for silence.

"And now, we have a festival. We have a new church. And to top it all off, tomorrow night we have a special production over at the Sandpoint Theater, The Harpy's Curse! And the lead role will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda!!!"

Another cheer, and Cydak takes a lavish bow and bids the townsfolk a happy festival.

Finally, Father Zantus steps foward. Smiling, the jubilant priest passes his kind eyes over the assembly. "Blessed of Desna! Thank you one and all for coming to this joyous and momentous occasion. May the grace of the goddess favor us this day. At noon we will release the Swallowtails here in the square. At sunset, we will consecrate the new cathedral and ask for the blessing of Desna. Until then, eat and drink! Make merry in the streets! Let the Swallowtail Festival begin!" He throws up his arms as he declares this and the townsfolk roar with applause, many throwing their arms up into the air, mirroring Father Zentus's excitement and happiness.

The square slowly thins out as the people gravitate toward merchants and the various inns and taverns. Musicians bring out their instruments, and dancers and jugglers begin impromptu performances. Children run through the streets laughing and playing.

Re: 1

Glum's smile widened into a grin at the admonition to make merry in the street.  While his order was constrained against excess, on festivals there was a more than moderate degree of fun to be had even without drinking oneself under the table, as many a dwarf might have done, or stuffing oneself with food until one could no longer move.

In his own way of enjoyment, Glum grabbed a couple of ribs and a drumstick from a bird he did not recognise and made his way through the crowd.  His mode of locomotion could best be described as capering, and later, he was sure, he would add some tumbling to his "dancing".  For now though, he satisfied himself with nibbling his food, drinking fruit juice and chatting with the more amiable or interesting people in the crowd (or, let's face it, the prettiest girls).

"Hello," he said, "Have a happy festival.  I am Glum, the world's least dour dwarf.  I'm pleased to meet you."

Catessa entered the town of Sandpoint on her way south to see the life along the coast, and to see the mush fens.  The lands around were wild as they said, until she neared Sandpoint.  The farms were her first indication of a settlement.

Once in town, Catessa had heard something about a cathedral to Sarenrae in the town of Sandpoint.  And something about Swallowtails, which was of interest.  She did not realize the cathedral was only now just finished.  As she neared the temple, the press of the crowd made her uncomfortable.  But her curiosity drove her on towards the fromt to see.  Her short stature was at times a drawback.

"Excuse me." she said more times than she could count as she moved through the forest of people, thicker than any briar. "I can't see."  She would explain.

"Ow!" the halfling said as she tried to move near.  She looked to see a strange dwarf.  "Excuse me, sir dwarf.  Could you move please?  You're standing on my foot."  Cat waited patiently for Glum to move.  But the pain was starting to become intense.

Glum looked at the halfling lady before him and moved his foot.  "I'm sorry", he said. "were you trying to see?"  He continued looking her as if appraising.  "Would you say that you and your things weighed less than 70 pounds?" he asked. "Because, short though I am, and not all that strong, if you were on my shoulders, with my four feet beneath you, you'd probably be able to see above the heads of some of the smaller members of the crowd."

Re: 1

Stalking past the merry-makers of his village, the hulking warrior gave the immidiate impression that he at least was not in the same jovial mood.  A twine wrapped jug, purchased at the Fatman's Feedbag, hung from his index finger and occasionally he would pull it up to his lips to take a large pull of the fiery liquor.  He looked to have not shaved in several days and he stank of not washing in at least an equal amount of time.  Oblivious to his effect upon those around him, he would occasionally rebuke the happy towns-people for being naive to the cruelty of the world.

Sighting the capering dwarf, he sets his shoulders and moves up to the bearded fellow, "Oy!  What be you so happy about dwarf?!  Can you not see the joke life has played upon you, eh?  Short on stature and on wits I warrant."  Hearing the halfling now, he looks down where he was about to step on her and stumbles instead backwards awkwardly before falling on his backside in a cloud of dust where he simply continues now to sit and rail against cruel fate.

"My lady-love has forsaken me and now I have only the company of mad dwarves and halflings, eh, why must the gods so forsake me?"

Catessa bent down and rubs her foot.  There would probably be some bruising.  She looked back up at the dwarf, facing him with a smile.  "Thank you, sir dwarf.  Perhaps we should introduce ourselves properly first?  I am Catessa Fallowfield.  I serve Sarenrae and nature.  I'm passing through Sandpoint on my way south to see the Mushfens.  It is good to meet you."  She bows her head slightly as she greets Glum, and then waits gracious for him to respond in kind.

Glum smiled, "I am Glum the Resilient, the least dour dwarf in history (or so I like to think).  I'm a monk and very pleased to meet you Catessa."

Then he looked up to see the man towering above.  "Hello Colossus, I'm not Happy, I'm Glum.  Happy fell head over heels in love with some albino woman and I've not seen him for months.  This is Catessa.  Who are you and would you mind lifting her onto your shoulders so that she can see better.  I imagine you're stronger than me, and you're definitely taller."

Re: 1

Talis stepped off the boat, his posessions slung over one shoulder. The rogue stood on the dock for a moment, observing the crowd gathered for the festival. He had remembered Sandpoint as a bigger town, but wrote it off as a childish delusion. He had only been to Sandpoint a few times in his early life. Five times, he counted precisely; four on the yearly run for supplies and seeds, and one last time to board a boat headed for Riddleport. Has it really been ten years?
Talis stood there a moment longer, observing the people from a distance. He knew he didn't know these people, but there was still a connection their. Though, perhaps the connection was in the land more then the people. The rogue laughed out loud, realising at random that he didn't even remember how to use a plow.
Even if he didn't stick around, Talis was glad that the next few days, or weeks, would offer a measure of peace that Riddleport simply could not offer. "Am I home then?" Talis asked rhetorically to the town.

"How rude!" Cat remarks indignantly.  "Come on Glum.  This barbaric hulk has no manners!  Too much drink, too, I think."

Cat turns away from the crude man and then smiles at Glum and says "Not to worry if you are short wits, my friend.  You have more than the big lug, and I have enough for both of us."  She cracks a large smile to let the dwarf know clearly that all is in jest.

Having arrived the night before and also having enjoyed the merryment of the crowds the Gnomish woman Naomi walked upon the Dwarf and Halfling discoursing with the much taller human who seemed to partake of the particular mood of Dour to a degree not pleasant to observe.

"Come on now tall one.  To you we may be small of stature, but you do not need to be small of heart for your great size.  Come join all and be marry, or at least have a pint with me and discuss your woes."  She says to him.

As the big warrior sits upon the ground and cradles his jug, he looks to the small figure of Catessa and seems about to give a retort when a large belch instead escapes his mouth.  Hearing yet another diminutive female addressing him he turns to look at Naomi, now able to look her face to face.  He scowls, "Another one?  Has the world shrunk around me in my sorrow?!"  Lifting the liquor back to his mouth, he takes a long pull then coughs as the fiery liquor burns down his throat.  Finally, shaking his head in defeat, "I shall never marry nor be merry for such a destiny have the fates handed me.  But if you are buying, I will let you buy a round as my jug looks to be empty."  He illustrates this point by upturning the bottle and watching sadly as but a few drops spill out to land upon the ground between his out-stretched legs before tossing the jug from him.  Slowly he begins to rise back up to his feet, though a bit unsteadily.

"Sure!" She chirps happily.  "though you do not have to Marry to be Merry.  I am sure plenty would find one such as you pleasant, though some would probably find it daunting as well."  She says into his ear as he rises.

Re: 1

Taking one last view of the town from afar, Talis headed in an Eastward direction, making his way towards the center of the town. When he got to the center of the crowd, he was surprised to see the new church. The rogue had heard the purpose of todays festival was to celebrate the new cathedral, after some fire that had destroyed the previous one, but it was just words until now. It was just one of many things that had changed, but it came as a shock. Talis had never really encountered change in Riddleport, but now that he had a taste of it, he decided he wasn't terribly fond of change.
Afer staring at the church for a moment, Talis moved on, to calm his empty stomach, and to secure lodgings for the night. Vaguely remembering a place called the Rusty Dragon, where he and his father would stay on their yearly trip for supplies, Talis set off again.

The Rusty Dragon
Making his way in, Talis went straight to the bar. A little worried that with all the visitors, lodgings would be hard to come by, he figured he had better not delay any longer.
"Pardon me. I'm looking to rent a room for the night, if you have any available. Supper would be delightful as well." He spoke towards whomever was behind the counter.

He smiles back at Catessa as she leads him away.  "And I'm sure that gnomish lady will be able to make him forget his heartbreak in a hurry.  He'll be laughing by sundown I shouldn't wonder."

When he turns to he she speaks loud enough for Garth to hear her over the bustle and noise of the crowd.  "I apologize for my shortness with you sir.  I am sorry for your loss.  Perhaps we could enjoy the festival together?"  Cat's face and tone of voice match her apologetic and sympathetic words.  She looks at him for some sign of forgiveness.

It is unclear if the large man even notices the additional weight upon his broad shoulders as he rises, nor does he seem to feel the other halfling tugging at his mail as he walks on oblivious.  He seems still to be in a sad, inebriated funk as he continues to pine for his lost lady-love.  Still, he follows his new comrades docilely enough.  "I am Garth of the Oakenshields, this was where I grew up and first met Mara."  Here he wails a bit more before continuing on with his sad tale, "The Oakenshields are a proud family, but not rich.  I did not have anything to offer a bride's family and so I took my father's sword and went off to campaign for the mighty lords who pay well for blood and sweat.  Oh how I dreamed of my return home into the arms of the beautiful Mara."  More wails.  "Now she is in the arms of another!" A look of rage fills his eyes and it is easy to see how quickly his mood can go from one extreme to a murderous other, "I shall spend this fortune on ale and if I awake in the morning, I shall have the head of the man who stole Mara!"

Feeling heartfelt sorrow for his loss and for what he is going through Naomi continues to hold on to him but does talk to him as he walks along.  "You do know, once you adventure, that a townsgirl you knew in your youth is only second pickings.  No matter how fond the memory, she is but that.  And holding her memory to your sould oft times doth not do you well.  She takes a moment to rub his shoulders with her free arm from her lofted position on his back. "I can only offer you the advice once given to me when I but pined away for a local lad who married whilst I was away.  That he could not keep up, and I would be better off seeking one who could keep with my ways than to just pine my years away."

Thinking for a moment she then said "And besides, what would you do after taking the life of a lowly town worm?  Sit and rot in the Jail?  Flee and be outlawed?  Join with us and enjoy life.  We can show you fun as you let time heal your wounds."

A woman comes around the corner.  She must be from the Kaijitsu family because she is human, but most definitely not Cheliax, Varisian or Shoanti.  You recall they were a family from the other side of the world that helped found Sandpoint, but you don't remember them running this place.  She is exotically beautiful with a smile that seems to go on forever and a hairdo that defies gravity, and has living butterflies in it.  Wow.  "I am sorry, all my rooms are booked, but I may have something tonight.  Check back after the final ceremonies at sundown.  I suspect you will find that's the case everywhere, sorry.  If you'll give me your name I'll hold a room for you if one becomes available.  The good news is, meals are free."  She smiles, takes your name and leaves for "prior engagements".

Catessa Fallowfield - You seem to have attracted the attention of a Varisian family passing by.  Your poking does start to rouse her, and she mutters half awake "Who, what...."

Garth seems a bit slow on the uptake but he quickly regains his composure after hearing the old woman address him and his eyes widen a bit in shock as the halfling pokes the drowsy old woman, "Hey now, what be you doing, poking the old wise woman like that?  She is the wise woman of Swallowtail, old when the town was first built and deserves a bit more respect then that now, eh?" He moves over to the old woman, "My apologies old one, but they are new to Swallowtail."  He then seems to think back upon her earlier words and his face takes a sorrowful cast, "You know of Mara and her marriage, I am disgraced in the town.  I suppose it is my fate to go through life alone..."

Zer-Wedula followed Voon’s directions to the White Deer.  He placed Willi down in a pocket on the front of his robe, both for her safety and as a potential surprise for pickpockets.  She stuck her head out, sniffing.

He paused here and there to take in the sights and sounds of the festival.  There was much to see, much to learn, and adventure to be had.

Entering the White Deer, he sought out the proprietor and said, “Master Voon sent me here in search of lodgings.  Are any to be had?”

Re: 1

Noon
Father Zantus and his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square,
"Many ages ago, an avatar of the blessed goddess warred with the Mother of Monsters. The avatar was wounded, and plummeted from the Heavens. Her wounds were mortal; she was dying. But lo! an orphan of man found her! Though she herself was blind and but a child, she nursed the avatar back to health. The avatar of the goddess was very thankful for the selfless deeds of the child, and in thanks transformed her into an immortal butterfly.
As a butterfly, the child could forever fly be it day or be it night. All the wonders of the world she did see, and forever she was beloved of Desna.
In remembrance of this holy event, we honor the child and the avatar. And now, we release the Children of Desna!
".
At that signal, they pull aside the wagon’s cover, releasing the thousand children of Desna—a furious storm of a thousand swallowtail butterflies that swarm into the air in a spiraling riot of color to a great cheer from the crowd. Throughout the rest of the day, children futilely chase butterflies, never quite quick enough to catch them.
Lunch is provided free, at the expense of Sandpoint’s taverns. Each brings its best dishes—this event is a marketing push by the taverns as much to win new customers as it is to feed a hungry crowd. It soon becomes apparent that the darling of the lunch is, once again, Ameiko Kaijitsu, whose remarkable curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.

Catessa , Garth, Glum and Naomi -

have a wonderful lunch at the Rusty Dragon.  The proprieter, Ameiko Kaijitsu, is human, but most definitely not Cheliax, Varisian or Shoanti.  She must be from the other side of the world.  She is exotically beautiful and has a hairdo that defies gravity.  Her hair sticks out on each side of her head like a bird cage and has living butterflies in it.  Garth can tell you that Niska Mvashti is a druid, the most respected Varisian wise woman around, older than dirt (she was old 40 years ago when the town was built) and something of a mystic/seer.
Time flies when you're having fun and the afternoon passes quickly.  Garth recognizes many people, and many recognize him, eventually.  He does see a drop-dead gorgeous halfelf woman he remembers, being escorted by a handsome cheliaxian he doesn't.  The man is Cyrdak Drokkus, bard/owner of the Sandpoint Theater and the woman is Rynshinn Povalli, the prettiest girl in town when Garth was growing up.  Her mother owned a tailor shop, but he doesn't remember a father.

Talis Revain -
wanders around, getting reacquainted with Sandpoint.  He recognizes many people, but few people recognize him.  You also see Cyrdak Drokkus and Rynshinn Povalli.  You remember her from when you were 10ish and she was a teenager, the most beautiful teenager around.
<Your character was about 10/11, had he hit puberty before he left?  Yes- oh yeah, you remember her.  No- now you see why all the other boys liked her.>

Zer-wedula -
The White Deer
A pair of wooden life-sized deer, carved with painstaking care from white birch, stand astride the entrance to this sizable tavern and inn. The White Deer commands an impressive view of the Varisian Gulf to the north. This new building is a grand affair, three stories tall with a stone first floor and wooden upper floors.  It looks very clean and well maintained.  Inside you find a somber Shoanti man taking care of business.  "Sorry sir but all my rooms are full, but I hear some may leave tonight.  Check back after the final ceremonies at sundown" and then carefully takes your name.  Unlike at home, your halfelfness doesn't cause even a glance.  The only thing that mars the day is when Willi gives a little noise.  You look down to find a young (10 or so) Varisian kid pulling his hand out of your pocket.  Reacting faster than you, he slips into the crowd and you lose him.

Evening
Finally, as the sun begins to set, Father Zantus takes the central podium, uses a thunderstone to attract everyone’s attention, and clears his throat as he prepares to recite the Prayer of First Dreaming. A sharp retort, like the crack of distant thunder, slices through the excited crowd as the sun’s setting rays paint the western sky. A stray dog that has crawled under a nearby wagon to sleep starts awake, and the buzz of two dozen conversations quickly hushes as all heads turn toward the central podium, where a beaming Father Zantus has taken the stage. He clears his throat, takes a breath to speak, and suddenly a woman’s scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as the stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. As blood pools around its head, the raucous sound of a strange song begins, chanted from shrill, scratchy voices.  The shape that raced by and killed the dog now hides at the edge of the wagon—a single goblin, licking the blood from its dogslicer as it looks excitedly at the crowd, seeking out a new target.
<To save time I rolled your spot and initiative.  I've got good news and bad news.  Good news, only 1 pc was surprised.  Bad news, the goblin got initiative on almost everyone.  I haven't yet found a map program I like, so no maps.  I will try to keep the tactical descriptions descriptive.  Give me all the rolls for the turn at 1 time.  Normally, you may post in any order and I will use common sense if the situation changes substantially.  Read the "Tactical situation", it could vary from round to round.>

Talis Revain and Zer-wedula(blue dot) are 30' N of the goblin under the cart, about 10' apart (at the corner of the building south of bldg 5).
The goblin(red dot) is south of them in the alley under a cart (there is no horse and its empty).
Naomi, Catessa, Glum and Garth(black dot) are 30' E of the goblin, across the road.
There are people, tables and chairs scattered everywhere except for a 10' radius around the goblin.
 - Soft cover, +4ac from ranged attacks, misses might hit a person unless you take an additional -4 (like shooting into melee)
 - free action start of turn; make a tumble or ref (dc15) or movement costs x2(move 5' costs 10' of move) and no charging.
There is screaming all around, so whatever is happening isn't only in this area and the crowd is moving away from any goblin.

"The hells?" Talis cursed, confused by the sudden shift in demeanor at the first scream. One glance of something scurrying put the rogue on the deffensive, figuring the movement at first to be a Kobold, accidentally running into the crowd. His sympathies were cut short though, as the sound of a dogs yelp and an inhuman laugh. "Get back! Talis shouted loudly, towards the people still nearby the creature. He took a step forward, and tore his sword free, discarding the sheath with a toss. He wasn't the greatest warrior, or even very good by any measure of the word, but he did have a weapon with him, and Talis didn't see any guards close by. Gritting his teeth, he kept his eyes towards the creature, calculating his course of action.

Goblins Attack

<
Goblin1
Goblin2
Goblin3
Goblin4
Goblin5
Goblin6
>

Goblin1 under the cart looks around, kicks the dogs corpse as he moves 10' E under a table (hard cover), menacing people as they mill around in confusion.  For someone who was giggling insanely just a moment ago, he is disturbingly quiet and sneaky now.  And it turns out, he isn't alone (ok, the screams from all around indicated that.)

Goblin2 runs down the alley and jumps onto the cart above where Goblin1 had been (high ground) and howling with glee.

Goblin3 and Goblin4 are 30' S of Naomi, Catessa, Glum and Garth(black dot) on the other side of a table.  They both run up to that table and start a tug-of-war over a leg of lamb.  At the same time, they are trying to attack people on opposite sides with their dogslicers.  "mine", "mine", "mine",...(in goblin)

Goblin5 and Goblin6 are 30' W of Talis Revain and Zer-wedula(blue dot).  Goblin5 leaps 5' N from the backside of the building with a sack(2 hands) and uses it to grab a small animal(small dog or cat maybe).  Goblin6 charges 10' N up to a table and knocks over a candle, which lands in some spilled alcohol.  Whoosh, the table is on fire.  This seems to surprise and delight the goblins. The table is a good 10' from the building, with no one in immediate danger of anyone being burned.

Re: 1

Surprise Round
Naomi fired a bolt of enery at the Goblin on the cart and misses (singeing the hair of a woman in the crowd between them).
[Private to Naomi Armastance: there was no goblin on a table (under a table or on a cart)]

Zer-wedula casts a spell looking at the goblins to the south.  Goblin1, under the table, glances at him, shakes his head and stares at Zer-wedula until his attention is drawn to the big man with the dagger.
[Private to Zer-wedula: you will need to pick spells in the future,   otherwise I suggest (and will allow) a change to sorcerer.  I do agree, charm person is a logical spell choice.  However, I rolled a 19 to save.]

Glum pushes through the crowd and says something in goblin to goblins 3 and 4, who ignore him in their argument over the leg.
[Private to Glum: Intimidate is usable on 1 target, which you must be close enough to hit, and is a standard action.  This cannot be combined with a move action in a surprise round, also that would be 10' S toward 3 and 4]

Garth pulls out his dagger and gives a mighty battle cry, which attracts the attention of goblins 1 and 2  who jabber something, but Glum doesn't hear what in the confusion.
[Private to Garth Oakenshield: Intimidate is usable on 1 target, which you must be close enough to hit, and is a standard action.  This cannot be combined with a draw weapon action in a surprise round.  Draw weapon could be combined with a move action.]

Now that the crowds have had time to run, there are 30' radius clear areas around the goblins and you can see them clearly.  They are wearing nasty looking leathers and carrying makeshift blades called dogslicers (basically poor daggers).  Confusion is rampant, with crys and screams coming from all over and no sight of any guards.  It looks like you are the only ones between these goblins and many unarmed people.

Round 1
Talis now with a clear path, charges goblin 6.  Swinging his great sword, he catches the goblin solidly in the side, cutting through leather armor with ease and slamming his target against the burning table.  The goblin falls senseless to the ground, blood flowing from a gaping wound in his side, matching the blood on the sword.

Goblin1 - From under his table (cover) he reaches up with his off hand and blindly grabs some food, eats a bite and stuffs the rest in his pocket keeping an eye on Garth, his dogslicer at ready.

Goblin2 - Looks around, wanting to find a softer target than a big man with a dagger and sees Zer-wedula.  Charge...as he leaps from the cart he doesn't notice that his dogslicer hits the corner, which snaps the blade.  So when he arrives to threaten Zer-wedula he has no weapon.
<and that is a natural 1, which automatically breaks dogslicers>

Goblin3 - pulls the leg away from goblin4 and then around to runs to the
end of the table and starts eating, leg in 1 hand and dogslicer in the other.

Goblin4 - screams in frustration at the loss of the leg.  He then climbs up on the table and throws some food at goblin3.  With a murderous glint in his eye, he looks at the dwarf.  "Someone is gonna pay"

Goblin5 -   holds the bag in his off hand, draws his dogslicer and swings at Talis, hitting for 4 dam.

<be sure to include hits, dam, and all other rolls you need in 1 post.  If you don't I will roll it for you.
Be sure to track your hp on your character sheet
Your voice colors match your dot colors and goblins are blue on the game map>

Glum is 15'N of 3 and 4, 35'E of goblin2, 25'E of 1

Talis stared at the goblin for a moment, wondering if the thing was still alive, as he watched droplets of the creatures blood fall to the dirt. He would later curse his inattentiveness, as a burning sensation came across his ribs. Turning in surprise, he realized that one of the goblins allies was looking to avenge the fallen comrade. Or perhaps, that was just the human in him rationalizing the goblins actions. In any case, Talis was no pacifist, even against an enemy he thought might be justified. [Private to DM: [Adjustment as follows... Glum's usual to hit = d20 straight.  +1 because he's a dwarf fighting a goblin, -2 because he's using a flurry of blows. I forgot to do the -1 because goblins are small but would still be 18. Natural 20 makes critical possible. If it's critical then damage is doubled to 12]]

<be sure to include hits, dam, and all other rolls you need in 1 post.  If you don't I will roll it for you.
Be sure to track your hp on your character sheet
Your voice colors match your dot colors and goblins are;
blue  if active
black if down
gray  if out of sight>

Tactical situation
Zer-wedula are 30'N of the goblin1, next to 2 and 30'E of 5
Talis is in melee with 5, 30'W of 2
Naomi, Catessa, and Garth are 40'SE of 2, 20'E of 1, 25'N of 3 and 4
Glum is 15'N of 3 and 4, 35'E of goblin2, 25'E of 1

There are people, tables and chairs scattered everywhere except for a 30' radius around the goblins, so for the most part the crowds are no longer a factor.

Round 1
Naomishoots Goblin4.  On the table he is an easy target and she hits, doing 2 dam.  The nasty creature is hurt, but keeps going.

Zer-wedula shows great bravery and punches goblin2, hitting the goblins armor and doing no apparent dam, but your show of spirit frightens the cowardly thing.
[Private to Zer-wedula: Missed by 1, You could have taken a 5' step and cast a spell, but punching a goblin was very cinematic, kudos.  Also, you run your familiar.]

Catessa draws and loads sling, moves 5'NW so she can see Glum.
[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: You needed to move at least 5' to see Glums fight, see map)]

Glum carefully moves forward 10' and attacks goblin4 on the table, who nimbly skips over the blow.
[Private to Glum: Flurry of Blows requires a full round action (meaning maximum of 5' move, You had to move10', so 1 attack is all you can make.  Your 1st attack misses.  However, save that natural 20 and 12dam, that will be your next attack, next round]

Garth moves forward, but goblin1 was ready for him and slashes out with his dogslicer, hitting Garth on the arm for 2 dam <readied action>.  But he overextends in his eagerness for blood, leaving his throat exposed.  Garth stabs into the goblin1s throat, leaving a huge gash that gushes blood,  crit=12 dam.  And he thought he as safe under his table.
[Private to Garth Oakenshield: I don't see a confirmation roll for the threat, so I rolled for you- confirmed and the 6 must be before the crit (you can't get 6 on (1d4+3)x2]

The goblin song is more distinct now, and Glum hears the 2 he's fighting singing along; <yes, goblin bardic music>

Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!

Goblins race and goblins jump.
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!

Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!

Round 2
Talis misses goblin 5 from the pain of his injury

Goblin2 - runs south, screaming and flailing his hands, sees Garth killing his cousin and runs around the corner of the building behind the cart and out of sight(full concealment).  The screaming ceases.  Unsettling how goblins can go go silent so quickly.

Goblin3 - waves his leg at goblin4 (as if to say, "mine", but his mouth is full of food), and then duck down under the table(hard cover).

Goblin4 - attacks the dwarf from the high ground(+1 to hit) and misses.

Goblin5 -   Muttering along with the song, he hits Talis for 2 dam (Talis is at 0hp, disabled but conscious and mobile- may take 1 move action, any more and you take 1 dam and collapse)

Tactical situation
Zer-wedula is 30'E of goblin5
Talis(at 0hp) is in melee with goblin5
Naomi is 25'N of goblin3 and goblin4
Catessa is 30'N of goblin3 and goblin4
Garth is 30'N of goblin3 and goblin4, at least 15'E of goblin2(out of sight)
Glum is in melee with goblin3 and goblin4

There are people, tables and chairs scattered everywhere except for a 30' radius around the goblins, so for the most part the crowds are no longer a factor.  Confusion is still rampant, and you still hear screams in the distance.  You are beginning to smell smoke.

Round 2
Naomishoots at Goblin4.  This time her aim is high and the energy goes harmlessly by.
[Private to Naomi Armastance: You see golin2, sneak from the cart to the table in the middle where goblin1 died.]

Zer-wedula sees that Talis is in trouble and casts a spell at goblin5, who now seems to be having problems deciding what to do, but is still aware of his surroundings (dazed; take no actions, has no penalty to AC.)
[Private to Zer-wedula: You see golin2, sneak from the cart to the table in the middle where goblin1 died.  What is Willi's SOP in combat?]

Catessa shoots her sling at Goblin3.  Her aim is off and the stone goes sailing by harmlessly, time for spear work.
[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: You will need to drop the sling (free action) to properly use the spear as it is a 2 handed weapon]

Glum hits goblin3 under the table with a well placed kick, crit 12dam), which takes the giggling thing by surprise,  Goblin3 collapses twitching to the ground with a solid thud.  Glum continues the attack on goblin4, but again the goblin avoids the blow.
[Private to Glum: ]

Garth runs N, where a halfelf is casting a spell to Garths left behind the building.  As he rounds the corner he sees a Chelaxian wielding a great sword in melee with goblin5 (though the goblin looks like it is having trouble deciding what to do).  There is already 1 goblin down with a pool of blood under it.  The Chelaxian looks to be at the point of collapse.  You rush up and engage goblin5.
[Private to Garth Oakenshield: double move this round, just use the same roll next round]

Round 3
Talis is barely conscious from the pain of his injury and this goblin hasn't even been touched.  But then, goblin5 starts behaving oddly, as if it couldn't focus or something.  And then a big Varisian with a dagger comes around the corner and rushes up to the battle.  Taking this chance, you move 30'E near the halfelf from the ship, Zer-wedula.

Goblin2 - generally unknonwn

Goblin4 - attacks the dwarf from the high ground(+1 to hit) and misses again.  "Stinky dwarf"

Goblin5 -   Dazed, no action

Tactical situation
Zer-wedula is 30'E of goblin5
Talis(at 0hp) is 30'E of goblin5
Naomi is 25'N of goblin4
Catessa is 30'N of goblin4 and 45'SE of Talis
Garth is 30'W of Talis/Zer-wedula, in melee with goblin5
Glum is in melee with goblin4

The crowds are starting to thin as people are finding ways around the pockets of fighting, but they still make a barrier about 40' from the fight. Confusion is still rampant, and you still hear screams in the distance.  You are beginning to smell smoke.

Re: 1

<Misc npcs are white dots>

Round 3
Naomi shoots Goblin2 and misses again.
[Private to Naomi Armastance: I feel for you. I once spent an entire combat missing by 1 point, arghh.]

Zer-wedula casts a spell at goblin2 who had quietly moved into position under the middle table and had armed himself with goblin1's dogslicer.  As a bright light bursts in his face, goblin2 starts rubbing his eyes with his off hand (Dazzled:  –1 penalty on attack rolls, Search checks, and Spot checks), it also serves to alert everyone to goblin2s location, in the middle under the table.
[Private to Zer-wedula: What is Willi's SOP in combat?]

Catessa charges goblin4 while yelling at Glum , "I'm coming, Glum" .  But wily goblin4 is just as adept at avoiding her blows and she misses.
[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: Ok, I stand corrected, well technically I am sitting.. .Next round Glum can 5' adjust again and flank]

Glum tries to pull goblin4s legs out from under him, but again the slippery goblin avoids his attack.  Glum adjusts 5'S to the end of the table.
[Private to Glum: "1d20-2" I think you left the -2 from last rounds flurry on by accident.  Next round you can 5' adjust again and flank with Catessa]

Garth attacks goblin5 who is almost quick enough to avoid the dagger, almost.  It catches him in the gut, punching through the leather with ease and drops him with 6 dam.  Goblin5 slumps to the ground, senseless from the pain and bleeding profusely from the wound.  Garth looks around for more threats, but none immediately present themselves.
[Private to Garth Oakenshield: Since you didn't specify, I had your other action, is to look around for an ambush.]

A Chelaxian female in clerical vestments comes out of the cathedral and looks at Talis, then carefully looks around.  She has a crossbow.

Round 4
Talis sees Zer-wedula light up goblin2.  So he moves 5'W, putting the building between himself and goblin2 and hopes he wasn't seen.  As goblin2 goes by he takes an AoO, suffers 1 dam and collapses at -1hp.

Goblin2 - Charges (-2ac)to Zer-wedula, "Got new doglicer, slice you good longshanks".  But runs right by Talis who swings and sweeps goblin2 at the knees, 6 dam.  The goblin falls to the ground and his head hits the ground hard, just before Talis joins him on the ground.

Goblin4 - neatly avoiding both AoO from Glum and Catessa, hissing "can't catch me stinky" goblin4 moves 10'SE toward the building, when a tiny dog comes around the corner and starts barking at him.  Startled, goblin4 slashes at the dog, and misses "nasty dog, I eat you".  The dog backs off, still barking.

Tactical situation
Zer-wedula is 65' from goblin4
Talis(at -1hp), bleeding
Naomi is 30'N of  goblin4
Catessa is 5''NW of goblin4
Garth is 30'W of Zer-wedula
Glum is 15'W of goblin4

Chaos has engulfed Sandpoint. Goblins race everywhere, running amok and singing and slashing indiscriminately.  You now definitely smell smoke, but see just thin tendrils rising into the air.

[Private to Zer-wedula: Now that you can pause and observe, that female gnome who just "cast" that bolt of energy, has a style you have ever seen before.]

Everyone takes stock and looks around.  While chaos still has Sandpoint in it's grip, with goblins everywhere, there is no immediate threat and you do see a man down.

The Chelaxian female in clerical vestments and crossbow starts moving toward Talis.

Garth stalks warily amongst the tables, stooping now and then to look beneath them as he seeks out any more goblins or wounded who may need his immediate help.

Zer-wedula manages to stop the bleeding just before the cleric arrives.  "Yes, I think I can", and she says a prayer<CLW>.  Talis consciousness returns and he finds himself <at 5hp> lying on the ground with a young woman in fancy clerical vestments kneeling over him and Zer-wedula and a halfling woman standing behind her.  "You were very brave, foolish, but brave.  You were all very brave.  I must return to my post now."  As she leaves a big dog with a sling[Private to Catessa Fallowfield:  Garious]comes bounding up to the halfling woman and starts panting.

Glums stands on a table 30' S of the small gathering and attempts to establish some order, but goes mostly unheeded.  A few people point in different directions and a few people cry "have you seen Emyralda/Aeren/my child/etc...", but for the most part the people ignore him.  In fact, most people are staring at Naomi as her glowing eyes/hands fade.
[Private to Glum: Sorry, luck is not with you today. (rolled a 4 on d20) and you don't have chr or skill.]

Garth cries out to his comrades from near a fancy store(building 5) thats all locked up tight.  Then he spies a goblin looking into a rain barrel.  With the reflexes of a trained warrior, he takes advantage of the goblins distraction to attack!  As he strikes, he discovers, the goblin is already dead.  Naomi arrives to help and after a bit of pulling (his head is stuck) the body is pulled out.  This goblin apparently drowned himself in a mostly empty rain barrel.  Stupid little freak.

Talis tried to blink away a sudden headache, the sound of his pulse throbbing in his ears delaying his usually quick reflexes. Finding a hand in his face, he grapped in and sat upright, sitting there a while longer while the strange magics mended his wounds. The rogue decided that he didn't like the sensation of healing magic, it was a bit alien. He barely noticed the cleric though before she was gone, and was still a little concerned about his wounds. Talis had seen combat before, and even once taken a nasty cut on the forearm, but never had he ever really feared a wound before.
With the second introductions, Talis seemed to find himself and realized he was being spoken too. "Talis Revain, yea, I remember you too. Not too often you see mixed folk, you stood out a bit. Do I have you to thank for my life? It's a pleasure regardless, though I feel I would make a better introduction were I less covered in blood." Seeing the halfling and her goblin eating dog, he nodded gravely. "You have my thanks for your concern, miss, though I should be alright. It was but a tactical mistake. I thought it best, at the time, to disarm the goblin with my kidney."

Catessa seems a bit disappointed that she didn't get to heal talis.  Nevertheless, she feels now is not the time for discussions.  She takes out her sling and loads it and she speaks her mind "I think we might be needed elsewhere.  There might still be goblins about, and people to help.  I don't know what you are going to do, but me and Garious are going to head out into town looking for anything that needs doing.  Will you come with me?"

Cat scans the area, looking and listening for any sounds which might indicate trouble.  After a short pause to let everyone decide, she head in the direction that looks most promising.

"Yea, sure. Just a moment," Talis said while rising to his feet, careful not to injure anybody as he retrieved his sword. Wandering off for a moment, Talis spied his sheath, and put the his blade away, before rejoining the halfling lass and the elven wizard. "I don't have anything better to do this eavening, and I would like to help. Besides, safety in numbers." Talis follows after Catessa, keeping his eyes open to any potential dangers.

Happy to see his new friends safe Garth looks back to the drowned goblin.  Shaking his head at the sight of the drowned creature, Garth bends to clean his blade upon a swath of grass before sheaving it again at his side.  The big warrior then turns to Naomi and shrugs, "These vermin raid periodically, they have a ravenous nature but all too often they fall prey to their own stupidity."

Garth then lumbers over to where Catessa's sling lays and retrieves it for her, bringing it back to where she watches the wounded Talis.  Looking to the half-elf, the soldier grins, oblivious to the goblin blood that stains his own garments.

"One day, my friend, we shall compare scars over a tall tankard of ale.  That is a good blade you wield, would that I had carried my own instead of this bodkin at my waist.  I think though that I shall retrieve my sword and mail before venturing out to be sure no other goblins lie in wait outside of the village."

Pyros

Tactical situation round 1
<No surprise
Your voice colors match your dot colors and

Check the game map for details on where your character is in relation to the goblins.

As you rush down the row of buildings toward the fire, the sound of that awful goblin song becomes louder against the backdrop of fighting, dogs barking and general chaos noises.  As you approach the corner you can see down High Street and parts of Downtown spread out before you.  There are a few columns of wispy smoke, but none nearly as big as the column near you.

As you round the corner of the building(12), marked with a weapon-smith sign, you confront 2 goblins(1,2) looting the smithy.  They have already dumped some weapons and a large shield in a pile on the ground(X) and are coming out with more.  They are 10' from the front of the party.

About, 90' away a group of goblins (4-6) are slowly pushing a cart loaded with burning wood (for the bonfire that was planned for later) toward the slope to downtown.  Obviously they want to push a flaming cart down a hill.  Of course this would have been easier if they had WAITED to light it on fire.  15' beyond them is a goblin female(with cover from the cart) with a bow.  She is singing that awful song while trying to direct the cart pushers with gestures.  Writhing around on the ground behind the cart is a burning goblin who wasn't so careful.  If he isn't dead, he soon will be.

Catessa remains quiet, so as not to alert the wagon goblins and their singer.  She urges Garious into a charge at the nearest goblin, since the pile blocks the other from her path, and the other goblins are simply too far.  She thinks it best to cut down these two first, so that their enemies can only attack in limited numbers.

Catessa & Garious is like a little knight on a charger.  She charges goblin 1 and hits squarely with her spear, 7 dam.  Garious barely misses with a vicious bite.

Naomi Scrambles off Garth and fires, but misses in her zeal.

Glum missed by a mile.

Goblin2 Drops his load of weapons, grabs his dogslicer and attacks Garious hissing "Nasty biter", giving him a nasty slash for 5 dam.  This seems to make Garious angry.  It seems like dogs really don't like goblins and the feeling's mutual.

Goblin3-6 stop pushing the cart and grab a burning piece off it(torchs) jabbering "longshanks", "slice 'em" and "burn 'em all". 3 & 4 move toward Talis, swinging their torchs.  5 & 6 seem to have trouble pulling the torches off and don't make it very far.

Round 2
Talis swings his greatsword wildly (missing), trying to keep the goblins away from him with a circle of steel instead of trying to land a solid blow.

Catessa & Garious Garious is barely controllable with his extreme dislike of goblins causing both of them(Catessa & Garious) to miss.

Naomi figuring Talis needs some help, fires, and connects, for 4 dam on goblin4.
[Private to Zer-wedula: Please specify which goblin you are attacking, thanks. Also, when firing into melee, don't forget to take -4 to hit to avoid allies, otherwise there is a good chance you will hit them.]

Glum missed by only 1/2 a mile this time.  :)

Goblin2 being a coward at heart, 3 to 1 odds are too much, so he moves back into the gloom of the shop/forge and disappears from sight and sound.

Goblin3 is swinging his torch so quickly that all he accomplishes is to put it out.  Otherwise, the flashing steel in front of Talis is enough to keep him at bay for now, misses.

Goblin4 the flashing steel in front of Talis is enough to keep him at bay for now, misses.  It also keeps his attention when he is hit by Naomi.  He glances around but quickly focuses back on Talis.

singer moves to get a better shot and shoots at the strange gnome firing energy that makes her hair stand on end.  It hits her armor and deflects off, doing no dam.  Now that she isn't behind a burning cart, those looking can see a goblin female wearing studded leather and armed with a shortbow, dogslicer and whip.

Garth follows goblin2 into the shop and almost doesn't see him, but the goblin was trying to hide in front of the glowing embers of the forge.  However, Garths swing misses.   This still invokes a scream from the goblin "stupid too big longshanks".

Round 3
Zer-wedula takes the normal light crossbow off the wall and loads it
<draw weapon=move, load=2nd move>

Round 4
Talis dying
[Private to Talis Revain: send me the stabilize rolls in private, thanks]

Catessa & Garious dismounts and flank with each other, but still miss the squirming and injured goblin3.

Naomi has difficulty aiming at the goblin as Cat and her dog maneuver for position, so her blast goes high, miss.
[Private to Naomi Armastance: Please, state which goblin you are aiming at and take into account the -4 for shooting into melee]

Glum charges the singer and with a mighty shout...misses.  He does have her full attention now.

Goblin2 swings at the big man, who deflects the blow with his sword, miss.

Goblin3 finds himself with a foe on either side, so he attacks the dog snarling with hate and rage.  Perhaps too much hate, he misses wildly.

singer takes a 5'step back, pulls out her whip and trys to wrap it around his legs.  She hits the leg, but when she trys to pull, Glums larger size and dwarven stability is like pulling on a post.  Glum stomps on the whip, pulling it out of her hand. She looks surprised, <in goblin>"But the plan...we can't fail...".
<trip attack, she hit,  but failed her opposed roll, glum succeeded on his retaliatory trip attempt and she releases the whip>

Garth has the goblin off balance with his deflection and swings a mighty blow before he can recover.  It takes off an ear and hits deep into the shoulder at the neck.  The goblin goes down bleeding like a sieve, 12 dam.  You didn't know goblins had that much blood in them.  So Garth heads to the door.

Round 5
Zer-wedula moves out up next to sleeping gobin5

Round 6
Talis is visited by 3 ghosts, battles past, present and future...sorry, wrong story.  Still down and not moving.
[Private to Talis Revain: Well, you'll be happy to know, my policy is going to be "death can happen".  I doubt if it will today because Cat has healing spells.]

Catessa & Garious cares for Talis with a spell that heals the worst of his wounds and brings him back to consciousness<again, at 0 hp>.  Meanwhile, Garious lopes over to the singer, carefully avoiding the cart on fire.
[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: Too many distraction for him to charge straight alone, but I used that 19 for the Aoo]

Naomi moves toward the sleeping goblins and shoots goblin6, who doesn't wake up (probably ever again), 7 dam.

Glum underestimates the singers quickness and misses with the same routine.  Even with the big dog of Cats suddenly appearing next to him, snarling at the goblin singer.
<Stud leather+16(+)dex+small=minimum of 17ac>

singer regains her composure "These boys less good, but me better and you DIE! ", and then the big dog comes snarling in her face.  "No he say longshanks easy prey..." and she turns to run away.  But instead of just fleeing, she started drawing an arrow.  This momentary lapse was all Garious and Glum needed.  The dogs attack causes a brief scream, which is cut short by Glums throat hit, 9 and 5 dam.  She goes down, spitting up copious amounts of blood.
<Instead of taking the withdraw action, she was going to move, then shoot her bow.  This provoked Aoo's, both of which hit.  Remember, not all opponents are as stupid as goblins.  In fact, not all goblins are this stupid.>

Goblin5 The carts fire has grown large enough to start causing dam, he takes 1 dam and wakes up.

Garth Looks around and notices goblin5 waking up, while the singer just went down.  He moves over to attack goblin5.  Just before he does he hears Zer-wedula say "I think we should take one alive for questioning".  Since this is sound military strategy, Garth uses the flat to bludgeon the goblin unconscious and then drags him away from the fire.

Out Of Combat
The Cart fire is now doing 1 dam to anyone within about 5' (see the dotted line on the game map).
You have 1 unconscious, slightly singed goblin as a prisoner.
Talis is awake at 0hp.

Now that the goblins are dead, a group of locals led by a woman(Cheliaxian, much stronger than average) come in to make sure the fire doesn't get out of control.  The woman goes over to the pile of weapons and starts handing them out to the people with her (mostly men still dressed in their finest festival clothes).
"Thank Torag you came when you did, when I saw the fire I was afraid those vermin had lit my shop on fire.  My name is Lt... I mean Savah Bevaniky."  You notice she doesn't take one for herself.

There is still plenty of chaos noise with goblins running amok.  But from your vantage point you can see the tide starting to turn.  By 1s and 2s, the citizens have made it to shelter and are starting to arm themselves, with the braver souls beginning to group into small bands.  It isn't over, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.  You figure this would be a good place (lots of armed people) to take stock, bind some wounds and otherwise collect yourselves before more goblins come.

Talis regained consciousness with a headache. For the second time today, he groaned at his own foolishness. "My uncle was right, I should have taken up wizardry." Sitting upright, he noticed the people around him, glad for the second time to have reliable company. He made a mental note to repay them for their benevolence, if he ever got the chance. "I am in your debt, miss. And yours a well, Zer. I would be dead twice over if not for both of your efforts. I am indebted, whether you wish me to be or not." Rising to his feet, Talis retrieved his sword, letting it rest against a shoulder, while he examined his wounds with the other hand. His armor now had two great, blood stained cuts in it, and a few minor scratches from near misses. He would need to get that fixed, soon. Talis was becomign painfully aware that real combat was nothing like the street fights in Riddleport, where the enemy was by himself, and a fast blade meant victory.

Garious cautiously sniffs Willi and once his curiosity is satisfied, ignores him.

The cart fire does not appear to be threatening any building, but just a few more feet and it would have been a conflagration in downtown.  Rolling Wagon of Flaming Doom indeed.

The goblin is quite intimidated and begins yammering on.  The few bits and pieces you get are;
-Sent by chief to help a longshanks to kill everyone and burn the place down
-Obviously it was his chiefs plan, duh
-Chief is still at home
-More than 1 tribe was involved
-The thunderstone sound was the signal to attack
-He attacked through the north gate

Savah has produced a vial and gives it to Garth.  "I was saving this for a forge burn, but you look like you are hurting.<potion of clw 1d8+3>  I don't like the sound of the north gate being compromised.  Would you folks head over there and check it out.  I will guard your prisoner and make sure the fire doesn't spread."  She certainly sounds like she knows what she is talking about.

Cat doesn't like what Glum has to report.  An angry expression crosses her face and her fists tighten.  "One thing before we make a plan.  Is that goblin saying what I think he's saying?  Father Zantus threw the thunderstone.  Was he involved in the attack?  Or was it someone who knew he would throw it.  I think we have an investigation to conduct after this battle is over."

"A plan of attack is a very good idea.  My divine energy is nearly spent.  We can't afford to get too hurt.  There I propose that no one rush the goblins once we spot them.  We need to find cover and assault them with slings, bows, and crossbows.  Take down as many as we can.  Then the most heavily armed should move in first, followed closely by everyone else.  If we move as one, we can succeed.  In close combat, we should go after greatest threats or lone goblins first.  It's like in nature.  The wolf pack hunts as one, or the wolf dies alone."

Re: Pyros

The occasional sounds of battle, clanging swords, calls of support by the town guard, and shrieking and singing goblins continue to echo around the town in the rapidly dimming light, but the festival area in front of the cathedral is quiet and mostly deserted.  Here and there are people, weeping quietly over a few bodies or searching for their loved ones.  There is a family comforting a young boy as he weeps over the still smoking corpse of his beloved pet cat.  As you approach the corner of the White Deer Inn, you hear a dog bark furiously for a few seconds followed by a yelp.  Rounding the corner you see a big goblin riding a "goblin dog" and wielding a horsechopper in the middle of the road turning from dead dog toward a man hiding behind a rain barrel.  There are 6 other goblins who are whooping and cheering.  These goblins are armed with dogslicers and javelins.  None appear to have seen you yet, so you have the drop on them.
"goblin dog"
This mangy dog’s face has the flat nose, beady eyes, and protruding teeth of a rat grown grotesquely large. Tiny clawed forelimbs and a long, hairless pink tail add to its verminous appearance, and the smell of sun-baked sewage practically steams off its patchy fur.

Before following the others, Cat mounts Garious so as not to slow the others down, and drawing and loading her sling.  Cat is wise and careful about rushing into a situation, so she tries to prepare beforehand.

[Private to DM: Retroactive.  I hope that's ok, since I was waiting for others to post first, and then got too busy to get online.  It's going to be Cat's standard sop when going into a suspected dangerous situation.]

When the group arrives at the White Deer in, and hears the dog yelp, she pulls Garious up short.  Peering around the corner, she notices the goblins, especially the one on the large dog.  She turns to the group and whispers "Hit the dog first."  She realizes that she doesn't have time to argue or explain.

She begins to whirl her sling, attempting to loose it at the goblin dog at the same time as everyone else attacks.  She lets loose.

Round suprise
Naomi glows that strange white light and fires her energy at goblin1, who falls to the ground, twitching from the hit, 6 dam.

Glum moves forward stealthily

Catessa & Garious shoots her sling at "goblin dog", hits for 3 dam.  Garious readies action to attack.

Zer-wedula at a brisk walk is a little way behind the group and moves around the corner

Garth carefully lowers Naomi to the ground

Talis moves and closes the distance to the goblins

Round 1
Naomi moves forward, shoots and misses

Glum moves forward stealthily and the goblins appear not to notice, though they might be distracted by 2 men with big swords.

Catessa & Garious reloads and shoots sling at "goblin dog", but misses.  Garious readies action to attack.

Zer-wedula  shoots at the previously injured "goblin dog", but misses.

Garth Charges nearest goblin2, misses but is very close

Talis manages to hit goblin2, 13 dam.  Now that's teamwork.

Rider & "Dog" looks shocked at your interruption and rides his mount behind a building, carefully putting his horseslicer away and pulling out a shortbow.

Goblin 3-6 throw javelins and move, drawing their dogslicers as they do.
1 at Naomi - hit for 3 dam,
1 at Garious -miss,
2 at Garth - both miss (but 1 was really close)

Wow, everyone hit.  good.

Civilian Guy Thinks about running, but the charging goblins change his mind

Round 2
Naomi moves forward, shoots and scores on goblin3, for 4 dam

Glum does some cool monk/tumble thing and flings a shuriken at goblin4, hitting for 4 dam.

Catessa & Garious drops her sling and drawing her spear she charges goblin4, she hits but Garious misses and the goblin takes 2 dam.  He goes down with a hunk of sharp metal in his neck and a spear in his gut.

Zer-wedula  shoots goblin6 and gets a dead on hit, 12 dam
[Private to Zer-wedula: You are using the wrong column on the weapon table.  Your crossbow uses the M column (unless you're intentionally using a smaller weapon), so it does 1d8 dam, on a crit 2d8 dam.]

Garth gives a mighty yell and swings a mighty blow at a stunned goblin3, and cuts his head off with a snicker-snack, 13 dam.
<Figuratively stunned, not mechanically stunned>

Talis with all the nearby goblins dead, Talis moves out near the civilian and readies an action to attack.
[Private to Talis: As long as I know you'll be gone, I'm ok with it.  Thanks for letting me know.]

Rider & "Dog" rides out from behind the building on the right, shoots at Zer-wedula (who must be an expert marksman, just look at that hit) and proceeds on around the Inn on the left.

Goblin 5 charges Talis and takes a sword in the side from a readied attack, 9 dam.  He drops before he gets a chance to attack.

Civilian Guy Keeps cowering behind the barrel as the rider goes by.  Those Goblin dogs are just nasty looking things.

Tactical Situation Round 3
Talis is 30' from the rider (can't charge due to obstructions)
Everyone else is at least 60' away around a corner(can't charge around corners)
It will take double moves, just to get him in sight.

Catessa Fallowfield & Garious rides after the rider, stopping 15' away she hurls her spear and misses due to movement of riding, the spear is sticking up out of the ground behind the rider.
<-4 for double moving, and you +1 for point blank shot>

Zer-wedula  reloads and moves around the Inn to his left, hoping to head the rider off "at the pass".
[Private to Zer-wedula: Clever, have you been reading my notes... :)  yea, it is pretty obvious.]

Garth follows after the goblin, anxious to get it within range of his blade.

Talis moves around behind the goblin, not getting in range of the nasty "Dog"s teeth.

Rider & "Dog" As the goblin rider acts his countenance changes, to a less angry, more thoughtful visage.  The "dog" snaps at Garth but misses as it moves away and around Talis' large blade to the corner of the Inn.  Garth, trying to avoid the snapping jaws, misses on a counter attack.  The rider shoots at the big guy as he rides away, but misses.
[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: He was under a Rage spell, but it has expired.  You also realize the "dog" is faster than Garious.]

Ready action: Attack rider with spear if he gets within melee range.

The goblin wears studded leather and is very dexterous, which means a good AC.

Round 4
Naomi Armastance shoots at the dog, but the rider sees it coming and yanks his mount out of the way, they seem to move as 1.
<successful use of the Mounted Combat feat>

Glum follows Zer-wedula, short legs pumping.

Catessa Fallowfield & Garious rides around the goblin rider with a burst of speed and cuts in front of him, waiting with spear ready to skewer herself a goblin, but misses.

Zer-wedula  moves around the Inn and peers around the corner, just in time to find the rider bearing down on him.

Garth charges after the goblin, anxious to get it within range of his blade.  The rider/dog combination proves elusive and unpredictable and he misses.

Talis thinks to charge, but finds Garth has reacted quicker.  Still, Talis is close enough to move and attack the goblin rider, barely missing.

Rider & "Dog" finds himself surrounded and attacked from all sides, he dodges around Cat and continues on.  Urging the dog on, he turns and fires at Garious and hits for 10 dam.  As he comes to the far corner of the Inn, he is surprised to find the halfelf blocking his path.
<This provokes an AoO from: >
Garth attacks the rider, and misses
Cat attacks the rider, with Garths distraction Cat hits for 7 dam,
a serious, but not mortal wound
Garious misses
Talis attacks the "dog", but just like with Naomi's attack,
the rider maneuvers the "dog" out of the way.
<Mounted Combat again, followed by a critical hit>

Glum charges the "dog" and swings wildly, not even coming close.

Catessa Fallowfield & Garious rides after the goblin rider and attacks with her spear, she skewers herself a goblin, for 4 dam.
<you can't charge around a corner, so Garious had to double move and can't attack, but you still hit with an 18.>

Zer-wedula  steps back out of range of the beast and coolly fires a bolt at the mangy beast, right into it's heart, 9 dam
[Private to Zer-wedula: I've been keeping careful track of where everybody is and what they can do.  Don't take their posts literally.  Take Cat, she posted a charge attack for her and Garious.  I'm ignoring the charge part (they have to go around a corner) and Garious' attack(he had to double move), but she still gets to attack and still managed to hit).  Some of your fellows don't have a solid grasp on 3.x combat details.]

Garth runs after the goblin, but finds himself hopelessly outrun by both the rider and Cat on her dog.  By the time he gets there, it's all over.

Talis heads back toward the citizen.  He doesn't look like a common villager, he is very well dressed.

As Talis checks on the goblins, the man introduces himself "Wow, you're really good with that sword.  I wouldn't be here if you and your friends hadn't stepped in.  That was a close call, it's a shame about Hunter.  He was a good hunting hound.  My name is Lord Foxglove, but you can call me Aldern.  You don't think there are any more of those things around, do you...." as he looks around nervously.  All 6 goblins are clearly dead.

Naomi runs around the corner and finds the rest of the people gathered around the dying goblin and his mount.  Behind her she sees Talis talking with the noble you saved and some people coming out of the Inn led by a Shoanti man holding a spear in 1 hand and a Klar in the other.

The rest of the group has paused, looking around for more threats and see none.  Garious is injured but not mortally so.  You take a good look at what is called a "goblin dog".  It is hideous, this mangy dog’s face has the flat nose, beady eyes, and protruding teeth of a rat grown grotesquely large. Tiny clawed forelimbs and a long, hairless pink tail add to its verminous appearance, and the smell of sun-baked sewage practically steams off its patchy fur.  <see game "map" for a picture>The horsechopper the rider had is very well made, not at all like the poorly made doglicers that the others had.

Glum, heeding Zer-wedula words, manages to stop the riders bleeding.

Aldern continues "You are too modest, and call me Aldern.  Well, it doesn't matter, I'm sure you and your friends can handle any goblins that appear.  Someone in charge...you want to see Sheriff Hemlock or Mayor Deverin, they would be in charge.   I would like to thank all of you properly.  I'm staying at the Rusty Dragon for a few days, why don't you and your lady friend" bowing in Cats direction, "come by sometime, tomorrow or the next day and I'll buy you dinner.  It's the least I can do."  And he heads toward the other group.

While Zer-wedula, Garth and Naomi observe Glum bandage the wounded goblin, they notice a few people (probably from the Inn) observing them from the corner with a couple of lanterns and torches.  Then the man who you saved comes around the corner.  He is very well dressed, obviously a man of means, "Ah, there you are.  I want to thank each of you for saving my life.  If it wasn't for you and that young fellow with the big sword I would be...well I shudder to think about it. Like I told your friend, I will be at the Rusty Dragon for a few days, stop on by and I'll buy you all dinner.  Just ask for Aldern, Aldern Foxglove."  and he gives Naomi a gentlemanly bow.

The darkness has fallen, with just the littlest bit of glow left to the west.  The sky is clear and the moon is out, the stars are beginning to come out as well.  You hear no sounds of chaos or combat, just the hushed murmurs of your audience from the Inn.

Aldern sheds a tear and glances at the dead dog, then smiles a sad smile "I would like that.  Hunter was my companion for many years."  He holds out his hand to let Garious sniff it, before trying to pet him.  He knows how to treat a dog.
<[Private to Catessa Fallowfield: Garious seems to like him.]>

As everyone is standing around discussing what to do next, someone begins to hear a barking noise coming closer from the direction of the cathedral/festival grounds.   Zer-wedula and Naomi, with their elven/fey (low light)vision are the first to see a small group of goblins being chased by an armed militia group with dogs.  The goblins see an armed enemy in their path and run north, with the group moving parallel to their path to box them in.  The 4 goblins end up against the cliffs on the north side of town, surrounded by your group and many armed militia led by the sheriff.  "Surrender.", the sheriff yells in goblin.  As the towns folk pause, a small dog leaps forward and starts barking at the stinking goblins.  This seems to startle 1 enough that he falls off the cliff.  1 starts to charge and is filled with arrows before he takes 2 steps.  The others look at his arrow filled corpse and leap to their deaths on the rocks below.

The sheriff starts issuing orders to everyone.  Sending groups to recover the bodies, secure the gate and report back to the mayor that Uptown is secure.  Finally, he gets to your group.  "So you're the group that fought off the goblins at the festival.  Thanks for your help.  Anyway, we have them on the run and that appears to be the last group.  Come by my office tomorrow and we'll talk. Say, aren't you that Oakenshield boy Garth.  I thought I recognized you.  Welcome home."

He is impressed that you had the foresight to capture a commando (the rider).  As you saw at the cliff, goblins don't usually have the intelligence to surrender.  He will take care of things, though if you have some ideas he will be happy to listen, now or later.

The evening is filled with tending the wounded, putting out fires and securing the town.  As the evening deepens into night the town is shut down as the local militia starts a street by street sweep, searching for stray goblins.

The group finds themselves the center of attention and can easily find lodging at any Inn, free of charge (at least for awhile).  You hear renditions of Zer-wedula punching a goblin in the face.  Talis bravely facing 2 goblins at once.  But Naomi's glowing bolts of energy seem to be attracting the most attention.

White deer inn with Garth, Zer-wedula and Naomi
The atmosphere is subdued with talk of goblins and worse.  What could it mean?  Will they be back?  There is talk about who was killed.  Surprisingly few people were killed, the goblins seemed too excited to really concentrate on killing.  Garth and Zer-wedula both attract glances from the serving girls.  They giggle at Garth's attempts at flirting, but they are always under the watchful eye of the somber inn keeper (Garridan Viskalai) so they keep it somber.  Naomi keeps finding people staring at her, and looking away when she catches them looking.  The rooms are clean and well maintained.

The Rusty Dragon with Talis, Cat and Glum
Here the conversation is a little more lively, with Ameiko's (who seems to be sporting a new hairdo) story telling and music providing the spark.  Cat notices that many of the young ladies are giving Talis glances, though he seems oblivious as he is wrapped up in his violin.  Garious is more than welcome and is treated as a hero, with oohs amd aahs over his wounds.  The rooms are decent, but old and worn.

Past when his hands became sore, Talis finally put the violin back in it's case, and dropped two gold pieces on the counter before Ameiko, nodding politely any hastening away.
Talis wasn't blind, but did his best to pretend he was around the local girls who had been glancing in his direction all night. Talis bore a quick mind from years of studying the Cyphergate. He was nimble and agile as many elves. Manual labor, farming, and constant training put quite a bit of muscle on his bony arms. However, one thing he was not, was terribly attractive, physically, financially, or socially. A six foot scarecrow with a sword, an ill earned reputation, no steady work, and a lack of foresight likely to put a 21 on his headstone.  Any interest the locals had in him, would fade in a week or a day, maybe sooner if they spoke to him. Certainly it was not genuine interest, just momentary attration, that drew their attention. He did the kindest thing he could for them, and continued to pay them no noticable mind, lest he became a regreted mistake to contemplate upon in years to come.
That in mind, he made two detours on his way to bed. The first, avoiding the foolish girls, and the second, passing by the halfling woman. "Miss Fallowfield," he said in his typically polite manner. " I'll be out for a bit around sunrise, but back to break fast. What say we and Glum visit the White Deer as early as is reasonable to fetch the others? Perhaps get a quick start to a likely busy day."

Re: Pyros

Even if it is too late for Cat to let him know of Talis' plans, on account of him being asleep and all, Glum arises at or before the crack of Dawn and stands at the front of the hotel, practising his art and is ready to set off with Cat to the white deer when the Sun gets its lazy face out of bed.

Re: Pyros

Cat nods her head.  But curious as all halflings are, she can't help but ask the question "What are you doing before sunrise?  Nothing dangerous I hope."  There is concern there.  Cat would hate to lose Talis, given his penchant for getting into trouble.  It's amazing he's lived this long, if that is what his whole life has been like.

Re: Pyros

Talis chuckled a bit. "Nothing dangerous, just going for a bit of a walk. I've been in Riddleport for the past ten years, and it has left me eager to see something quiet and uncrowded. You're a nature priestess? It's something like that. The city is my domain, and to see it at peace is a pleasant sight."

Re: Pyros

Rising early the next morning despite his head pounding from the drink of the prior evening, Garth dons his armour and clasps sword and dagger to belt.  He tests the string of his bow before placing it over his shoulder with the arrow quiver at his waist.  Placing the large helm upon his head, he then takes up his shield and slings it over his broad back, his red cloak underneath the glaring boar's head.

Dressed now in his full armored array, the soldier strides downstairs to the commonroom where he partakes of a tankard of ale, half a loaf of bread and some cheese and sausages.  With a loud belch afterwards, he waits for Naomi to show so that they may meet their scheduled engagements for the day.

Re: Pyros

Hearing the roaring belch as she entered the room Naomi snickers at the large humans antics and comes nearby to him.  "Complementing the cook I see." She says with a wink.  "I trust that you slept well and are ready to go and see the sheriff?  I think he had some stuff for us to do."

The big man grins, "Aye, let us see what the sheriff has to say.  We should look up the others as well and let us not forget to pay our respects to the old one."  He pushes himself up onto his feet with a clink of mail and stomps his booted feet to get the blood flowing.  Then as an afterthought, he looks back, "If you have not eaten, you best do so now, no telling when the chance will come again."

Re: Pyros

Grabbing a breakfast sausage and slapping it onto a slice of bread which she rolls around it Naomi just nods and heads out of the building towards the Sheriff's office.  "Lets go then, I don't need much to eat." She says.
