Good to see you are well Autarch.

Quick question: Can Vhagaar move his arms around after getting lassoed? If yes, can he reach the critter with his greatsword yet?

the javelin's stuck in the spider-thing which is in turn stuck to the ceiling.

the spider-thing can hit any target on the platform with the skull portal.

Uh ... I got nothing yet. Perhaps I will have to reread all previous descriptions. There was a stone pyramid with a skull on it? Looking away from the portal? Is it possible to turn it around?

Is there still active power in the runes? Perhaps they are keeping the portal closed and we just need to erase the. Freeing any nasty things beyond the door, but that's what we are here for after all...

Nothing of it has something to do with science, charts or 82 though.

So much for poor Randolo - that is the fate of people not logging in.

Anyway, when Zar did his Read Magic Runes spell some time back, you just said they were harmless. But are they filled with any power at all? If no, we can ignore them. If yes, it might be worth melting them out or something similar.

In situations such as this, unless I had a compelling reason to take the risk, I wouldn't. You do not yet have a compelling reason.

It would be risky to shift the rubble whether by hoist or a prop. That much is clear.

So I guess either ponder the question further (How do I free the items with the least possible disruption?) or try an unused exit.

I guess I've been putting this off for some time. I should have tapped myself.

There are certain bones I have enjoyed chewing for most of my sentient life. I would sometimes think mournfully of the time when I would have finished chewing my current bone--even if I knew I would replace it with another. There were always more bones and I was always ready to chew. Ultima III -> Ultima IV -> Bards Tale -> and on and on.

I thought RPOL would be just such a bone, but for reasons I can only grasp at, it is not. I felt pretty much done after our last adventure and I didn't really feel the urge for a new bone.

But, you know, it was a good bone. I chewed on it for 8 or nine years. That's some bone, right?

In general. Maybe not so much DCC. I'm not sure I want to invest the energy to get back up to speed. Lots I liked about it though.

And not a tactics heavy version of D&D that would require tiles and endless states/buffs/banes. Too much labor.

So probably a classic AD&D module like we did with Castle Amber. I shall ponder.

I find gaming's just one of the few ways to stop thinking about my clients, you know.

Maybe a fresh DCC game starting at level 1? I've been wanting to play a DCC Wizard (w. patron) for a long time now. :)

For some variety you could allow the new classes introduced in great supplements like Hubris, or the recently released DCC Annual, would help attract more players (though a DCC game would attract plenty players IMO as there are no games going on here currently)

Now that I'm thinking about it, J, DCC is a modern revamping of AD&D (extracting it from the tactical morass it has become) (though I have not played 5.0). So the attraction to AD&D would be the nostalgia-infused old modules. But now that I'm thinking about past times, Sailors under a Starless Sky and Fate's Fell Hand were … blood brilliant modules. They had that prog rock and King in Yellow vibe I relish. I mean I don't really like prog rock but I like the idea of it. I digress.

Whatever you go with Autarch (and I hope its DCC!) I'm all for a mapless theater of the mind. DCC works great that way IMO. Just start at level 1 rather than a funnel, or higher if you wish.

If you want to run non-DCC modules you can always convert the AD&D ones you like.

OK. Before I (re)commit to RPOL, I wanted to revisit my decision in Sept of 16 to abandon ship.

At the time, I said I was tired of RPOL. I guess so. It was start of another semester and I might have been teaching 1-2 ESL classes in addition to my regular 3. Plenty of take home work. Daughter was a very unhappy teenager.

I would also add now that player participation at the time wasn't so great, down to just a few regular players. And neither was the module--weaker than the SotSS and FFH.

But now I work as an unlicensed social worker. No takehome work. More emotionally than mentally draining. Daughter is vastly happier as a 2nd year animation student at CalArts. She even painted a mural at my social services agency over the break.

So let's do it. I have a couple of new players (people I know) and I want them to experience the funnel.

So Creep, Scrag, Creep! -- the Halloween 19 horror module.

Josh, V, Ricky and Sarah. And another TBD.

Ok. The italicized, dark blue text is pretty much straight from the module. I have improved it in various ways.

As for the design of the module, I prob really won't be touching it. This is not a beginner's funnel, I will say that.

Any questions you have about what you can do/can't do (like with respect to the chains), we can hash out here or you can just post.

One init roll per group at the highest init mod. Then post for the group.

Quad, one init roll per group. In your case it would be Aine at +1.

DC 13 to be a wriggler of chains.

Bound pcs can make attempts each round to free themselves. If they are unsuccessful, they could move somewhere. No, of course, they can't. They're chained. Nope, not much else they can do, I'd wager--accept notice that they have none of their possessions. Trying to kick these things away would be futile but who wouldn't attempt it (unless one we're busy trying to wriggle free)?

Since the chains are weak, alternatively, pcs could smash them against the poles themselves for two rounds (or two nearby pcs bashing the same chain, I would presume).

Sure, I suppose.

Also, I have one more question I forgot about earlier.  One of my folks starts with a pet pig -is she down here in the hold with us, or whereabouts unknown?

Thank you. I shall rotate the duties until he returns or we get another player. Come to think of it, one of his died last round, so the other two wriggle free.

Whereabouts unknown. You're in the human livestock pen, after all.

The lizards are up for their round 2.

On work days, I'll update in the evening EST.

So David won't be with us if he ever truly was. A little weird as he presented himself as a DCC designer (with designer credits) but he expected me (in an unspoken way) to flesh out his character sheet with the professions and other info. So he didn't have the DCC pdf and (1) didn't ask me for one or (2) wasn't going to buy one.

I updated the players wanted ad, and there is somebody I know I can ask on Thursday.

Josh, I think only warriors can make unarmed attacks.

So David is down to two characters. I think the thing to do, for now, would be to ask Quad and The Three (4!)and to add a 4th to their crews. Do you mind? These two will be the ones who wriggled free in round 1.

One of David's died in round 1 so only 2 need to be accounted for.

All the players are up.

You mentioned something earlier about trying to kick them away - is that not an unarmed attack?  I thought it was.  Or is it just flavor text on what an iguana's unsuccessful attack roll might mean?

See. That's just me. I said "futile" to be clear you shouldn't waste your actions trying to kick the critters. But then I said, who wouldn't try? to acknowledge it would be a reasonable thing to try.

Reasonable yet futile. Sigh.

And when I originally wrote that, I thought I of adding an example about the utility of trying to kick away a ravenous saltwater croc. As in no utility. Feet are not a deterrent for a crock but an incentive. So I've heard.

Also, my new character, Claude the Clod, is ready.  Is he currently chained, and should I roll an escape attempt for this round?

House Rule: Minimum Damage = 1. That goes for untrained unarmed attacks such as Kat's kick or Aine's chain. I applied 1 point to Beta to account for Kat's kick.

The Four Strangers: Roll one up, if you would.

Both of the new characters have already wriggled free (as two of David's had done).

Quad, I really just don't know what to do with that. Sleepers in coma can only be nourished via feeding tubes and IVs. Fort save? Wouldn’t there still be a considerable dose of caffeine in the partially chewed coffee beans, and wouldn’t some of it be absorbed by the tissues in their mouths?  I would think so.  I know that some people deliberately administer caffeine doses by swishing with coffee, but not swallowing.

But it’s your ruling, of course.

Subcutaneous absorption of caffeine.

Hey, all. I just wanted to give you all a bit of an update.

As for this adventure, I think we're about 2/3's of the way through. Survival is not guaranteed.

As for the pandemic in the US, we're in early days and survival is not guaranteed. My wife just flew back from LA where she had been visiting our daughter over spring break (my daughter flies back tomorrow). We've stopped all socializing. Both of us can do our jobs remotely (she will finish teaching her classes online; mine can be done via phone/text). That is to say I can keep my job but only be occasionally effective at it. In most respects I can't do care coordination.

I suspect this will last months rather than weeks. As for the ensuing economic depression, years rather than months.

Every day there's new shit going on.  Our city just declared that as of tomorrow morning no one should leave their house at all except for the minimum necessary "life sustaining activities," as they've been calling it.  I've also gotten set up for therapy via video chat, so we'll see how that goes.  My wife works at a hospital, so even though she doesn't have any direct involvement with patients they're still expecting her to show up in person.

I'm curious if people who have been playing post-apocalyptic games in recent months have suddenly found that they're losing their appeal...

It's a spacious cabin with a simple bed, wardrobe, and locker for storing personal effects. There is evidence that it has recently been used as a makeshift tattoo parlor: spilled ink, preparatory sketches, the whiff of hairspray.

I believe this is Dahut's boudoir .. unsearched?

Assuming the others tell X & co about the crates, the trio's next stop will be there.  After that ... my vote is the upper deck/forecastle.  Does that include a crow's nest?

Actually, it's the First Mate's room which doubles as a tattoo parlor (with all of the accoutrements). Two of the islanders do sport gnarly tattoos.

Right the Crow's Nest. I added that location to the Star of Nostro post. It is separate from the f'c'sle.

You would be able to recover your gear from the lockers in the crew's berthing. If you wish to search the ship supplies, you need to make a DC 10 Agility Check to secure the crates (+2 for the smuggler in the group (Kovac)).

So, yes, the Klabautermann, is a water kobold which I have given the epithet: Kobold of the Seas. There have some other references to this friend of sailors in the game.

The bipedal stone iguana could be referred to as a "great kobold." But that could be confusing.

I finally had enough other things die down so that I could go through the IC forum, post by post, and take notes.

This has helped me understand things a bit better.  It's a challenge to try to make heads and tails out of the clues and situations!

I also want to say that I've really enjoyed the funny stuff (the Dahut molestations excepted, bad bad!) that has been posted.  DCC remains a very difficult game over play-by-post, because of all the deaths ... you almost have to treat the characters as if its cartoonish.

I think we've got a decent chance against the Skrag if we band together.

Fixing the ship and getting home, well, that's tomorrow's problem!

With this being the case in point, there are three written records as such:
  • Ship's ledger found in the locker in the Poop Deck. Just recited by Endo. Edited to reflect current number of islanders still in vegetative states.
  • The First Mate Conant's final log entries.
  • The Captain's Log. This will take about ten minutes to read.

Umm, yes, we probably should read this right away.  I believe *checks notes* Fouillis has the logbook.

For searching the crates to get a wheel to fix the helm, any volunteers?  With the usual RPOL die roller shenanigans forthcoming, we'll need someone with good AGI and lots of luck to burn to avoid Death By Crate.

Re: 6th OOC
The crew of the Star of Nostro have secured the cargo crates and barrels so meticulously that any attempt to retrieve an item without first securing the adjoining containers results in an avalanche of crates and barrels coming down on the PCs.

Canadian Ingenuity:
Proposal: use 10' pole, ropes, chains and other implements to reduce the DCs on those checks  :)

I would think that that 10' pole or length of chain in the hands of a landlubber would have just as much chance as triggering the avalanche as just trying to secure them by hand--if not greater.

So just roll, already :).

All should declare what they plan to do with their next turn.

Noted!  (*gulp*)

Posting in OOC so we can co-ordinate a little:

Y: as an Animal Trainer I'm hoping she has the right background for the +2 ambush bonus, if so she'll make the die roll on that *gulp 2.0*.  She has an idea that involves fresh livers as bait.  She will need help with traps as mechanical devices aren't her thing (hint hint, chestmaker)

X: is going to assist Y and help organise the ambush, i.e., find people who want to fight and make sure they have weapons.  He's a woodsman, he sees the monster as a big tree that has to be cut down.  Choppy choppy.

Z: is a coward and not going to fight but he IS going to try to read the charts.  Endo want to help too?  Might be good to have some redundancy in this life-saving endeavour?

Also: can any character sing or play music?

For clarity: there is nothing to indicate the creature descended into the bilge through the barred hatch as the ick is limited to a small area away from the hatch. This transmutation has been witnessed before.

To wit: Yolanda watched the creature dissolve before her very eyes.

Questions three:
1) Did we see lifeboats anywhere in our previous explorations?
No lifeboats.
2) Can individuals burn luck to improve INIT?
Yes, the one who made the roll for the group.
3) Diving into the water and then swimming under the ship and popping up around is at least possible, yes?
The ship is moving too fast for that; you'd need to be tethered. You're not in deep waters either, so you risk being shredded by a reef. I wouldn't do it.

As I understand it, it will take an islander 2 full rounds to escape from the bilge: 1 to get near the platform and the next to reach it and climb the ladder.

Thinking ahead or this is what I'm thinking.

After our denouement, we'll take a break for a few weeks. Next, for those who wish to continue, I'd be open to running … well some module you've never had a chance to play. I guess Tegel Manor would fall in that category for me. We can stay with DCC or switch to OSRIC. Well, I'm not really wed to any system so long as its a variant of D&D.

And, well, yes, we have reached as Japanese game designers might say, "A Bad Ending." I think there are probably three of those possible with this module, one of which would obviously be "The End of all Livers a We Know It." And the one you found.

Re: 6th OOC
First off, kudos to the GM for running a game from start to end.  On RPOL, that adds it to a very short list of mine.

Second, I found the lack of player agency in this module simultaneously hilarious and distressing; it felt like nothing we did really mattered and it was too funny discovering just how that moved the story along.

Of course, in Alien, Ripley gets her hands on some serious mecha hardware and has an airlock.  I guess Ridley Scott went for the non-Japanese ending  heheh

My future is a bit up in the air, after 3 months of nada this summer is looking super over-booked busy, and I have to paint the house, which looks, um, like a failed luck check happened somewhere.

So I will give up my seat at the table and wish everyone all the best.  I am sure we'll meet again!

Re: 6th OOC
All survivors may advance themselves to lev 1 DCC characters per the customary DCC method of advancement. Go ahead and advance your chosen prime attribute to the next level of bonus (so a 13 luck would become a 16 or a 16, an 18.)

There are couple of things islanders might have done to trigger the second act of the module, the arrival of the pirate ship (which would have triggered additional challenges). There was a mechanic by which the demon stays on the ship with the most livers. So from the last post, you can see how you might have triggered that (if you didn't already know). Honestly, I thought the Canadian folk song was as direct as I could get with a clue.

The other trigger was the lighting of a lantern on the Crow's Nest or just setting some blaze on the main deck--something to signal a ship in the vicinity.

Unlike other DCC funnels, this one had a reasonable chance of "failure" or even TPK.

Bad ending #1: TPK
Bad ending #2: Ship goes down with no survivors
Bad ending #3: What you got

I don't plan to start a new module until after the July 4th holiday. ECLA, you can rejoin, of course, after your luck improves. Or at least just check in and say hi.

Have you chosen a patron, Quad? Go ahead and delete your old pcs and enter the data for the new one. If you like, keep a few of their items as a miracle of inheritance.

It doesn't look any other players are going to come a knocking. Coily would like to continue but he's not up for commitment currently. So if anybody would like to roll up a 2nd 1st-level pc, please do. The adventure calls for 4-6 1st level pcs.

If you want a 2nd, pick a prime attribute before you generate the 4x. So if you wanted a wizard, you would choose int ... and then roll, roll, roll and then take the largest brain as your own. MAKE A NOTE OF THAT PRESELECTION IN THE FIRST DICE ROLL.

5d12 gold for starting cash for 1st level pcs.

So far we have a wizard, dwarf, Halfling, and a sow.

I'd like to have all of the characters settled by July 4th when I start the game.

Hey, all. Happy 4th, I guess, for my fellow Americans inclined to celebrate it. Outside of Boston, I was treated to a Blue Angels fly over. That was enough for me!

A couple of you are new to my games so I'll talk a little bit about the desired pace. Weekend posting is optional. That said, if everybody posts on the weekend, I will post as well. I might just use a weekend post to advance the game as well. Three or so posts during the week would be good. That said, this adventure could have a lot of dialogue, so we'll see how that goes.

Here are a few extras for this run:

*This adventure is inspired by a major non-American work of literature. The first to identify it via PM will get a reward.

*The first player to use three English words (not in one sentence) unknown to me will get a reward. Don't be too cheeky about this. I suppose poor Neftas cannot compete in this, at least with his dialogue.

*Finally, the player whom I deem to have done the best detective work will also get a reward.

Go now. The game is foot.

Ah, no, I just neglected to look into it.

OK, before the events described in the first post, I would assume Betrugar had had the opportunity to attempt to summon a familiar at least once. If you don't get a 12 or better on the result, you can make a luck check to see if you had the opportunity to recover and try again before the shipwreck. If the first (or second) attempt succeeds, just proceed to the relevant tables to generate your familiar.

South of the tomb is the shallow pool in which the bundles were discovered. It abuts the stone disc which blocks the front entrance.

On the eastern side of the tomb lies the cleft, admittedly narrow, by which you can enter the tomb.

The collapsed part of the floor is what ...

It allowed for the formation of the cleft ...

The floor of this part of the tomb would be above the elevation of the surrounding ...

The collapsed part of the floor is accessed via the cleft. If you look through the that part of the floor, you'll see outside of the tomb.

That last one. I think that explains it.

Re: 6th OOC

OK, so you can see the stream on the outside of the tomb. The floor has partially fallen away on that edge, granting access to the stream via a cleft. The ceiling has also partially collapsed--the debris from this collapse should be illustrated as a pile in the center of the room, but it is not (a mistake on the artist's part).

There is not so much rubble that you can't walk where you please; it is, as I said, concentrated in the middle.

If I'm not mistaken, you lack a light source for your tomb exploration.

As a general rule, and I should have stated this long ago, I won't solicit skill checks. If there is something you want to check for, go ahead and make a roll. A couple of posts were a little too general for me to suss out if there was something you specifically wanted to check for.

"the party travels the twenty-five feet of the western passage, away from the partially rubble-filled chamber and into a ten-feet-wide north/south corridor."

And your places to go from this corridor are as follows:

To the north the passage opens up into a chamber (1). This is also true for the south (4) but further down. Along the way south to that chamber, there appears to be stairs on the western side (2) heading down and then, a little further, stairs on the eastern side also heading down (3).

Roland enters the crawlspace and crawls 10'. He has 40' to go.

Z passes a DC 5 agility test and then crawls 10'. He has not reached the 90 degree turn and is 30' away from the ghoul/roland.

On one hand it's a small payoff, on the other hand I may not get another chance to spend Luck anyway, so sure.  I'll edit my last post accordingly.

Edit: and on the other other hand, I forgot that my bonus die applies to damage as well as attacks, so it's still a fairly respectable roll.

Tom, don't forget to make your shield bash attack. It's d14 + your deed modifier (d3). You can attempt might deeds of arms with your shield bash.

Re: 6th OOC
Despite the damage output, the ghoul serpent is the deadlier of the two foes.

Alright, let's talk about mighty deeds of arms. They can be attempted every round but they must be declared prior to rolling. The deed die not only determines whether the deed succeeded (3+) it also provides a bonus to attack and damage rolls (even if no deed has been attempted).

That means Golo did 2 damage, not 1.

As for our dwarf, Tom, he automatically gets a shield bash attack every round as follows:
Attack Roll: d14 + d3. Record these dice separate, Tom. You need a 3+ if you wish to complete a deed with your shield bash.

Shield Bash damage is d3. Does it also receive the bonus from the deed die?

I treated the torch as an improvised weapon for d3 damage.

Any corrections or additions?

To refresh memories:

To the north the passage opens up into a chamber (1). This is also true for the south (4) but further down. Along the way south to that chamber, there appears to be stairs on the western side (2) heading down and then, a little further, stairs on the eastern side also heading down (3).

1=Antechamber with crawlspace above the entrance that led to the false tomb for the savage king (and the real tomb for Neftas).

2=Current location with defeated ghoul/ghoul snakes and an unopened stone chest.

3=Untaken

4=Led to the slick and slimy pit of doom.

Re: 6th OOC
For purposes of expediency, I will post the item ids:

Hide of the Cave Bear: When donned by a warrior or dwarf, the hide permits the wearer to fly into a berserker rage 1/day per level. In a rage, the wearer temporarily gains a +2 to attack and damage rolls, +2 hp per level, and a +2 bonus to Fort saves, but takes a -2 penalty to AC. The rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 1d5 + the character’s level, though the warrior may prematurely end the rage. At the end of the rage, the warrior loses all modifiers and becomes fatigued (temporarily reduced to half current hp, cannot run or charge) for a number of rounds equal to the length of the rage.

Ulfheonar’s wolf-spear, better known simply by its master’s name, is a magical weapon with a +1 bonus to hit and damage. The weapon also grants its bearer a +1 to initiative rolls. On a successful hit the wielder can use the cross bars mounted below the spearhead to pin a creature, reducing the target’s AC by the wielder’s Strength bonus. By sacrificing his actions in a given round, the wielder can maintain the pin on the target with a successful contested Strength check. With the spear, heroes can even pin magical creatures, preventing them from assuming gaseous form, teleporting, stepping to another plane, and so on.

Anyone drinking from the Horn of Kings immediately ascertains its powers. The horn glows faintly in the presence of poisoned meat or drink. Thrice per week, drinking from the horn grants +4 to a Fort save against poisons; thrice per month, drinking from the horn heals the drinker 1d12 hp/level; once, and only once, drinking from the horn grants the imbiber a DC 10 Fort save to return from death. When this final power is
used, ...

Gents, paralyzed doesn't mean an automatic coup de grace (armor and slips and stumbles). You roll one up in the dice chain (d20 -> d24) at +2 for it being prone (assuming one of you rolls it over) and apply damage as usual if you hit.

You would do well to remember the hag bride's folk lore.

Ick.

Change of mind, gents. No attack rolls needed for the coup de grace post. It's a formality with the length of the paralysis.

So Tom you can just describe what you want to do -- but do review the OOC entry for the spear because you want to do it right.

For the record, the attack rolls against a paralyzed creature would be one up the dice chain: a d20 would become a d24 -- if you were making them -- and at +2 once you had rolled the doggy over.

Re: 6th OOC
So since Find Familiar has a casting time of one week, I would like to use max spellburn (20 points) to get a max roll of 20 on my spell check which would total 22 with my CL. Since the ability damage heals 1 point per day I should have enough time to recover it all before the game starts.

One thing I would ask clarification on (never understood this part of the book) is that if using spellburn normally just adds a bonus to your spellcheck roll, but using the 20 points for a nat 20 rule just gives you a 20, wouldn't I infact be better off using 19 points of burn and rolling the dice for a result greater than 20? I realize that doing this there is still a 5% chance of rolling a 1, but those odds ain't bad...

As you say, the 20th point of spellburn ensures that you don't have the 5% chance of failure. It would also depend on whether you wanted to shoot for a focal or demonic familiar -- or avoid the latter outcome.

Betrugar,  you have found a focal familiar with that roll. You also need to make a d20 and d14 roll without any modifications. You should update your post to account for the massive, life-altering amount of spellburn.

Re: 6th OOC
I've had a wee bit of a think about which RPOL games I enjoy the most, having been a wee bit of a denizen for going on ten years.

I've concluded that I enjoy the mega-dungeons the most, the Arden Vul, the Barrowmaze--more so than the last two modules which had their charms but were narrow in scope. This is not true, of course, of all DCC modules; I found Fate's Fell Hand to be quite expansive.

The next one up is pretty meaty (48 pages), but I intend to run it far more expeditiously than Doom. That raises my next point. I find even a two or three day break in progress to break immersion in the game world and, hence, lessen my enjoyment. I love playing Arden Vul but periodically the DM goes 3 or 4 or 5 days without posting. That breaks the spell. So I intend to run this game most every day. We'll see how that goes. We won't wait for dear Tom; do you hear that Mr. Yoris?

Right now the party size stands at six 2+2+1+1. That will do for the Dreaming Caverns.

Re: 6th OOC
A few technical matters: the dwarf thing is about 55 feet away from the closest party members, Oren and Golo. A handaxe has a 10/20/30 range increment. That's -2 at medium range and a d16 instead of a d20 at maximum range. Additionally, the target is behind cover which means a -2 to the attacker's role.

Golo advances 30' so he's within medium range.

Golo rolls an 11 + (+3 deed) + (-2 cover) + (-2 medium range) = 10 which misses AC 15.

Sorry, I should have made all of that clear in my initial post.

Not that but it does look like a new player has wandered into our midst.

I have been thinking that I prefer the AD&D style of exp rather than the DCC level up at the end mode. I might switch to something like that should we ever complete this encounter.

Oh, haha, I can advance this.

All are up.

Re: 6th OOC
A couple of things. This module is not strictly speaking written for DCC; it's 3.5 compatible, so I have to make adjustments. The poison was identified as "medium monstrous spider" or "greenblood oil." I went with the former and chose tarantula from the DCC poison table. I don't think anybody can heal Zaichus.

However, I neglected to turn off the vacancy light for this game and another wanderer has happened by. I don't want to go to 8 PCs, but with the poisoning of poor Zaichus...seems like the party wants for another cleric.

Can't say that we've done introductions in this game or, if we have, I've long forgotten them.

I've been playing D&D and its variants since 1980 or so with some gaps here and there. I've done some technical editing/writing, plenty of English teaching, and some social work, which is what I do currently, with an emphasis on substance use and other chronic conditions. I live near Boston and lift modest weights.

Hi. I do UX design and little lifting. I also started D&D back in the early 80s but I drifted to computer RPGs once I got a C64. After many years, I returned to tabletop (well, remote TT, anyway).

In reply to Krovas (msg # 616):

Another reminder: as a thief, you choose how many points of luck you wish to spend and then roll your luck die (a d4) that number of times. I don't think you want to roll 5d4 in this case. Thieves regain luck at a rate of 1 per day of rest.

Further, luck can be bummed off of halflings aka luck batteries in DCC. It's good to have a little fellow around until you have drained him of all of his luck in which case you get a replacement.

Since Oren hasn't had a chance to log in, I'm going to wait until he does (or until Monday).

I swapped Oren and Roland's places in the marching order, now posted in the Esoterica thread.

Since we're doing party-based init, I should go ahead and roll it. I switched to d6 vs d6 and will award ties to the party based on Oren's +2 init bonus. It didn't matter for this round. I have come to think that rolling init once every round increases tension, and that I like.

Question on warrior deeds:
At 1st level, the deed die is d3 and if the player rolls 3 or higher (i.e., 3) and hits, the deed succeeds.
At level 5, the deed die is d7. Does a roll of 3 (and a successful hit) still  mean the deed succeeds? If so, it seems that for high level characters, deeds would almost always succeed on a hit especially as the die gets bigger.
Is that right?

It's final. It's already come up before. I'm not here to both DM and play.

I should be more explicit; I told him a ways back that if he wanted to play in this game that he would have to play more. He agreed. But he just hasn't over the intervening months. He's the last to post during combat if he posts at all.

These long-term RPOL games are like long-term relationships. While appetites don't have to be identical, they shouldn't be too far apart. If they are, there is too much friction and resentment.

In reply to Betrugar (msg # 666):

He can keep casting enlarge until he gets a lost result on the casting table for that spell. Spellcasting is not the traditional Vancian spell slot system of D&D.

Golo should be wielding the +1 spear you got in the last adventure.

Okay, looks like I did lose it.  Can I cast it again after resting?

Re: 6th OOC
Yep, after you have rested.

Golo has a d4 deed die as a level 2 fighter. His magic weapon, Ulfheonar’s wolf-spear, has some special properties as detailed on the Magical Items thread.

Okay, I re-rolled the deed die.

Unfortunately, certain of the spear’s properties will be of little use, since Golo has no strength bonus.

It depends on the scroll.  Some of them can be read by any class with automatic success, others use the caster’s normal spell check roll at -2 or +2, etc.

Yeah, roll a d100. On 1-75, cast as if you were the caster. If you roll higher, I'll let you know.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. When I wrote that 2 of the clerics heard the spell, I meant that a 3rd had not. There were 3 there -- 2 were affected -- and 1 made his save.

Golo, a hand axe does d6 dmg.

Disregard the casting roll; I forgot that I needed to try to hit him this round.

Does AC 11 hit? If not, how much Luck do I need to spend to hit him?

Re: 6th OOC
Gents,

I think I'm going to call this for a few reasons. First, I've realized I don't enjoy DCC as a system. I enjoyed the funnel mechanic and Haley Stroh's adventures. Second, this module (not by Stroh) is a convoluted slog. Third, it's not even written for DCC which causes the intersection of two problems: I don't have a good feel for the challenge level of DCC and I have to translate this one to DCC.

Going forward, I'll probably only be running OSRIC-style adventures, maybe Arden Vul.

Thank you for giving this a go. It's done.
